For the moment, the big thing to remember is that learning a specific style is very similar to learning to draw in the first place:

You have to do studies.

There's simply no two ways about it! I would recommend browsing AI galleries like this one and looking for pieces you feel are Especially AI Looking to do brief studies of.

If you've never done a study on purpose before, it's just when you do your best to re-create a specific image, such as a photo or model, focusing on one aspect of it, such as lighting-on-fabric. This is a great tutorial about how to do it on purpose rather than by accident as you practice.

So, for AI styling, you might do a 20 minute study of "the way hair and fabric are drawn with the same lighting" or "skin having the same glossy texture as objects."

Straight AI outputs with no post-processing work done have a few other "style" indicators that you could learn, such as:

Using the same amount of highlighting and shadow for everything in the image rather than changing lighting based on relationship to source and reflectiveness of material

Asymmetry of accessories, such as buttons on one side and ties on the other

Multiple poses for limbs and hair attached to the same torso and head

Body parts repeating to fill a space

Blending and smearing rigid repeating patterns (eg teeth smearing into lips, books smearing into shelves, stripes wobbling irregularly)

AuDHD is so funny sometimes like what do you mean my hyperfixations/special interests will last for years on end or possibly forever but they will cycle out every month or two with absolutely no transitional period or warning. like i will think about the same topic every day obsessively for 46 days in a row and on the 47th day with no visible cause adhd brain goes "ok! bored of that now" and autism brain goes "dw i got something queued up for ya" and i blast into full blown obsession on some other topic whose mental file folders haven't opened in 9 months. brain's out here treating hyperfixations like a crop rotation. once the dopamine runs out it cycles in another one but once something's in the rotation it never ever leaves. last summer we brought in one from when i was 11. it's so funny to me but frustrating too bc like. i cannot stress enough my inability to predict or control this. or how completely abrupt and random it can be

EDIT: seems this is more common among ND people than i thought, and probably not limited to AuDHD specifically :] i was just describing my own experiences and didn't expect this post to blow up, so don't take me for an authority, but i'm glad it resonated with so many of y'all!

one of the most boring lessons I’ve learned is that when a task feels overwhelming, you just have to start doing it. Even if you’re not sure how to do 90% of it, look for one small component that seems close and start there. Sometimes it’s reading one article on the topic, or searching one related term, or literally just googling how to do the task. Do anything other than thinking about it. The process of working on a thing inherently makes it less scary.

if you ever go to an art gallery and you see a painting and you think "that sucks. I could do that." maybe you can! I think a lot of people could do like. Matisse. Mondrian. Rothko. From a technical standpoint at least. Not everyone but a good number of people. But please consider: Artists™ aren't special people. They're just people. Just regular folks with something to say and a trained skill who showed that skill to the right people.

So instead of being like "that sucks! that's dumb! I could do that. It shouldn't be in a gallery." instead try, "I could do that. I should be in a gallery." and then do it and go and show your art to people.
