ok so this is just a thought that popped into my head while writing, but do you think the Capitol supplied the districts with like toothpaste or anything so--although the districts are barbaric--they are still somewhat hygienic because when the kids are reaped, they don't want someone with any "unattractive" features.

idk just a thought, but do you think the Capitol made any of the victors get braces or have surgery to fix their teeth when they won. Like I'm picturing little victor Finnick fresh from his games getting braces put on and it's breaking my heart oh my goodness.

if anyone has any thoughts on this let me know! Again, just a random idea I was thinking about.

Rereading The Hunger Games again, and once again a detail I am angry about from the book not being in the movie and that's the red headed avox girl. Katniss being caught off guard by her, Katniss destroying her room and being comforted by this gril she feels so much guilt about because she's a 16 year old girl. Just, the childness of Katniss through that girl she watched be taken.

Can you imagine how for a moment Haymitch had survived and had all the love in his life around him— to an extent he may have felt safe or at least could pretend he was.

And it all comes crashing down— suddenly the house that he had them all in for 2 weeks was haunted by the love that he once held. Their laughter and love soaked into each fiber of wood and stone— how could a place haunted by the love now out of his grasp be his home?

If Burdock Everdeen survived, what do you think would be different?

I still think that Katniss would be great with a bow, as she went hunting with him before. I think she would be a lot closer with her mother, as she wouldn't have shut down on Katniss and Prim because Burdock would still be there.

I think Katniss would have still volunteered for Prim, I don't think anything would have changed that. But I don't think Katniss would have that connection with Peeta, because the bread incident wouldn't have happened, so while Peeta would still like Katniss, would she have given him a second glance?

I also wanna know how her relationship with Haymitch would have changed. Like we know that Haymitch pushed Burdock and Asterid away, but would Katniss be told of him. Would Katniss get on the train and see Haymitch and know some of his story - of Lenore Dove, perhaps?

Would she know Gale? Obviously they met after her father's death. But would there have been that chance that they met regardless in the woods?

Would Burdock have taken Prim out in the woods more. Like I know Katniss tried, and Prim didn't like to hunt, but Burdock knew plants better than Katniss. Would he have taken Prim out to forage?

Did Prim know how to swim? Like Katniss knew because her father taught her while out hunting, did he take Prim out there too?

Would the revolution still happen? Like Prim gets reaped Katniss volunteers. Would they still do the star-crossed lovers thing. Maybe? Peeta could do the interview the same, say he had a crush on her. I believe Katniss would have still went out to look for him at the rule change.

How much would Katniss change as a character if her father survived. If she wasn't thrown into the role as the main provider for her family as early as she did.

How long do we think it takes Haymitch to start seeing the Victors after him as his friends, and not just the people who murdered his tributes?

Honestly, that goes for ALL of the Victors. Of course it makes so much sense that this group of survivors would find comfort in one another– the only people alive who could POSSIBLY understand the weight of the trauma they carry around. But each new Victor is also the person that just killed the children they were meant to bring back home. Obviously in the end, all of them remember who the *real* enemy is, but my god it must still sting.

(I am not sober atm 🍃so this could probably be worded a lot better, but y'all see what I'm saying?)

Hunger Games thoughts

Rue was around Katniss before the games, and it's specifically mentioned she stays near Katniss and Peeta during training. She must have seen the love Katniss had and her sister during the Reaping and known Katniss was safe.

Were Katniss' parents selfish or hopeful to have two children in Panem?

Despite Katniss' forced maturity, she talks so much like a teenage girl. She sputters, she reacts immaturely

There's parallels between Rue and Katniss' father, as they're both good people and beloved by Mocking jays

In the last sentence of chapter 21, there's a sentence about a green and silver moth that lands on her wrist before Katniss passes out. I wonder if it symbolizes anything because it's explicitly described as being exquisitely beautiful. My guess is that it's a camera for the capital and that's how they got all the shots for the Games.

Katniss fixates on what she owes Peeta and the debt between her and Thresh because if you're poor, giving something is a much greater act with much more obligation and significance.

I think it's very cute that Peeta fell for Katniss when his father was deserted by his mother in favor for her father, the coal miner. Peeta and Katniss' mother both fell for beautiful singers.

Collins's writing style is very much in the present, which is admirable. It's like you're right there with Katniss.

This is random but it's something I thought of on my way home. What happens if a conjoined twin is reaped? Would both be taken along with the other tribute making technically 3 tributes for the district? Would the capitol try to perform a surgery to separate the twins and send the other home I highly doubt they'd do something like that they would probably think it's " exciting" to have a conjoined twins as a tribute

the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.

It might look comfy it is only slightly. I try to pad the back seat as much as I can because one seat won’t go down. I feel it when I lay down and go to sleep.

But overall I can sleep relatively well. Not as good as a bed but better than sleeping up right.

The weather is getting bad as in it’s getting hotter and it’s becoming unbearable. It’s going to get to a point where the nights are no longer going to be a cool 50 or 60 degrees. It gets very hot in Texas and I’m already becoming uncomfortable.

I’d like a home to call my own once more and I need everyone’s help. I’m not creative or talented so idk how to keep people engaged long enough to help me. All I can do is continue to post when I don’t feel as discouraged.

I feel discouraged everyday thats why I’m missing posting on certain days. I just feel like I’m going to rot away in my car and die and no one will ever find me.

Not to be that person but Haymitch is now like canonically the person who keeps the Covey’s memory alive. Even if Katniss has information passed down from her father, I think it pales in comparison to what Haymitch knew intimately. Out of the remainder of 12’s population, it is Haymitch who adds their histories to the book. He tells their story. He also has seen Lucy Gray—he can give her a physical description.

And I think, out of all the things he did (in the canon story), that is the most meaningful way he honored Lenore Dove.

This is something I’ve seen a lot and I’ve also joked about a lot but after SotR I just need to clarify my actual thoughts on this topic: Snow’s “twink death” and his inability to let go of, what was essentially, a month long relationship.

The thing is, it’s not Lucy Gray that he’s holding a grudge against… it’s her lifestyle. He got to experience first hand, the freedom and self-assurance that groups like the Covey generated for themselves. He saw Lucy Gray run off into the woods, swim in a lake, sing and dance with her peers, all after a game that should’ve destroyed her spirits - because that is the point of the Games. To have a sole surviving reminder of why the Capitol is in control. To send back one “victor” who every district hates because the person standing in front of them is taking their friend/child/sibling/cousin/partner’s spot. To completely dismantle that person’s ability to cope with the world the way they used to and to have them beholden to the Capitol for “awarding” them with riches. They’re supposed to serve only as a reminder, a threat, a shell of a person who is visibly hollow and tarnished, hated by many, feared by some and pitied by few.

Lucy Gray is not that shell. Lucy Gray, therefore, serves as a constant reminder to Snow of what should not be happening to those who get to leave the arena. The more he takes command of the Capitol and the Games, the more the “mistakes” of the Games stand out to him because his benchmark for measuring them is Lucy Gray.

Keep in mind that the 10th Games were also the first time he got to see from the inside out. He saw what pissed off the tributes. He saw how they were transported. He also saw how the public reacted at the home district. Lucy Gray had nightmares, sure, but her ability to re-mingle with her friends was a failure of the Capitol. He saw the need to maintain a constant difference between “victor” and “friend”. He saw the need to put them on tours so that the divide and distance grows. He saw the need to be able to broadcast every aspect of the Games without having to constantly be frantically cutting the feed or very obviously fixing the narrative, because that was yet another failure of the system the Capitol was trying to enforce.

This becomes so clear in SotR when he has his talk with Haymitch and realises that the Lucy Gray spirit he has been trying to squash is still alive. Not only that, it’s infectious. It can take someone like Haymitch, someone who is very well pressed under the Capitol thumb, and spark a fire inside him. The colours of the Covey, the singing, it doesn’t just represent Lucy Gray, it represents aspects of freedom that shouldn’t exist. Even him saying:

“You love her. And oh, how she seems to love you. Except sometimes you wonder because her plans don’t seem to include you at all.”

Is so telling because he can’t fathom that a person in the districts could have the independence of thought to do whatever they want. To him, she should be desperate to go back to the Capitol with Snow to get a chance to live the dream that they’re trying so hard to sell, but obviously failing.

So no, Lucy Gray isn’t just the girl he couldn’t get over. She’s the girl that serves as a warning, as an abomination of the purpose of the Capitol. As his personal blueprint of what should not be repeated ever again.
