-You lost a lot of hours of sleep already do to comforting him at night so as much as he can function without a nights rest, he’ll do it to spare you

-You hate when he does this because you actually don’t mind comforting him, it makes you feel like he trusts and can rely on you.

-nightmares about the joker or the pit. Cryinggg this boy is really traumatized

-Even though he avoids sleep at all costs, this doesn’t stop him from napping on the recliner or at the kitchen table from time to time.

-He’s a bit self destructive with drinking, smoking, betting himself up, not sleeping or eating properly. You really have to help him and work with him. Be patient and kind pLz.

-He doesn’t like exposing you to the stuff he does, he doesn’t like you seeing all the gore or what not so he doesn’t try to come home bloody much actually. He might stop at dicks house or some other friend’s house to clean up a bit before coming to you

-Todd doesn’t like you to see and be around all that. He wants to keep that life very very separate, he even tries to keep the news off and away from you. Although you already know and if it bothers you it not, it’s not much you can do to stop him.

-The only time you might see him bloody or hurt is when he can’t make it to a friends house and he needs you to patch him up and put him to bed quickly.

-Yeah you guys do little annoying antics back and forth but it’s not something super crucial. The only time where it heats up is like if something he’s doing really really bothers you, like his killings or if he does something super reckless. The arguments usually end up with

hopes for s13 and brief review of s12?

okok ik s12 just aired but--- hear me out skjskyjs

i really liked this season, wouldn't say i loved it, but still liked it. we got a proper storyline unlike in s11 and some(?) character development, the soundtrack was good - which it also was in s11 - and i loved that they brought the master back.

yet i cant help but be quite annoyed about some things in this season.

the master:

like i said i loved that they brought the master back BUT how can we not have missy mentioned at least once. if this master is an incarnation after missy he for sure would have mentioned her at least once to spite the doctor and hurther even more by her having failed missy or something like that. and if he was an incarnation before missy i'm pretty sure that the doctor would have mentioned her at least once. it just feels like everything that missy hat going for her during s9/10 got thrown out of the window and i highkey do not like that.

i really hope that in s13 we will get some closure on that because i don't really believe we've seen the last of the master yet.

angst? things?

something that bothered me and a lot of others with the doctor in s11 was that it felt like the doctor lacked something the other new who doctors always had and that had just become part of the doctors character over the years.

i'm talking about the darkness, the anger, the sadness.

and i know we got some of that in s12 which i LIVED for btw because i am a huge sucker for angst. but (i'm going to use this word so much in this blog thingy skjs) we never really had an anger moment that made one go "oh damn" like we had with the previous doctors. i mean matt smith had one of those moments in his second episode.remember how he had this cold anger towards amy for pressing the forgot button about the starwhale situation because she didn't want the doctor to have to make a decision - so basically making the decision for him - and how he then screamed at everyone in fury. those are the kinds of moments im talking about and i feel like we haven't had one of those with the thirteenth doctor yet. (i love her anyways because i am basically whipped for her but still)

and i know many, many people like exactly that about her and say that it's refreshing to see a doctor that didn't embody those things and this is obviously just my opinion. i just feel like the doctor isn't really the doctor withthout some characteristics and that's one of them. (maybe its just me growing up with him always being like that that makes me miss it so much now)

and this is definitely not jodies fault because she's a great actress and more than capable of doing a scene like that - she just wasn't given the right material to work with.

the companions:

so this will be quite short because i only have two things to say

1. character development.

it's been two seasons and i'm still not quite sure what kind of people yaz, graham and ryan are and thats just-- not good.

i think they introduced too many characters at the same time and thats why they could barely pull of any character development. would've enjoyed it more if they did something like in s5 where amy travels alone with the doctor for half the season - we get an idea of who she is, ect - and then properly introduced rory.

2. HUGS

where are the good old hugs? thirteen deserves a hug and if she goes of the show without being higged at least twice i will RIOT and steal chris chibnalls identity to rewrite doctor who.

the only hug thirteen got was when she hugged najia khan. yaz' mum. like---

okay so if there is one hope i have for the next season that i want to happen more than any of the others it's

but because its getting quite boring at this point.

the last three companions have all been (more or less) killed off in some way. amy and rory being taken by the weeping angels and dying of old age, clara being killed by the raven thing, bill being converted into a cyberman.

don't even need a huge donna situation. maybe just have them go on their own, deciding it'd be better to stay home now, like martha did in the end of s3.

i don't know what to do with yaz tbh because i doubt they'd keep her as a companion for three full seasons with that little character development, ect. maybe have her stay and then go mid-season? idk

regeneration:

i think we all know its coming. the doctor is probably going to regenerate at the end of s13 or around the christmas/new years special. and while i'm not ready to let her go yet because i feel like they could do so much more with her character and i just lover her so much, i don't think they'll make her stay for four seasons. the longest run any doctor had was three seasons so thats why i'm assuming she's going in s13. (i dont fucking want her to go i cant - - - - -)

so if they make her regenerate i hope that they'll do two things:

have her have a memorable speech, doesn't have to be as deep and heart clenching as the one 12 had (i'm still crying about it) but maybe something along the lines of 10 would be nice. but just beacuse i love angst.

the other thing i'm hoping for is that she won't regenerate into a man just yet. not because i want to push some fEmInIsT aGeNdA but because i feel like there are many things that can still be explored with a female doctor - ESPECIALLY HISTORY WISE. yeah we got some of that during the with trials (was that the episodes title? not sure) in season 11 but 1 episode out of 372802275110 (ok i just smashed the numbers on my keyboard but still). have her explore some more of the struggles women in the past had to go and sometimes still go through.

a lot of the way the interactions in doomsday unfold are honestly BECAUSE tsukki and the reader are (i mean first of all, theyre tsukki and the reader with all that comes with) fully aware that:

they have abt a full day of life left

theres nothing that can be done to elongate that time or avoid death altogether

its not like some young adult novel where a group of ragtag teenagers save the world; its the tale of two adults who have had time to come to terms with the fact that their lives and the lives of everyone they know will end soon (and once again everything that THAT comes with). its why i rlly enjoyed juxtaposing the nice weather w the crippling realization of their own mortality 🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻

i didnt touch on it above bc i wanted to do it here but yes!!!! the absolute fucking DESPERATION felt by both parties in that last minute (which idk if you read my tags on the fic proper but 11:59 was originally one segment before i took those last couple paragraphs and made them the very last second ... i think i made the right choice? it rlly does scream FINAL to me) is SO poignant. all of the walls and hidden meanings fall away because in the end theyre all they have left, dying in each others arms at the very end of it all.

Watching this episode is bringing back all the suspense and awe I felt when I read this part in the manga. What a treat to be able to relive it!

They did a great job at keeping the tension and the "well shit everything's about to go wrong" from chapters 73 and 74, and managed to make the explosion at the end worth it, despite the fact I still think Reiner's continued survival throughout the arc is stupid and wish the anime had changed it so it'd be more believable, but here we are.

If you would like to take a look at my thoughts of the game, as a game to play and as a story to experience, I'll put this under a "read more" when I'm on PC bc I'm probably gonna write a lot.

KH3 and Critical Mode as a game to play.

First things first, I want to mention and make clear I have not touched a console KH game in about 8~10 years - the last game I ever played without 100% completion or on Critical/Proud Mode being the original Kingdom Hearts 2. Obviously from what I'd played long ago pales in comparison towards 3 and the mechanics.

The floaty combat and system felt comfortable and right when I played the game, and in times where I died it never felt like it was bc Critical Mode was kicking my ass bc of the other games jank difficulty spikes. All of my failures and deaths were all bc of me making mistakes and not understanding the mechanics at those times, which is different from the other games in series (or so I've been told and made to understand). In comparison to how other games had arbitrary and ill-attempted "ultimate" difficulty settings, KH3 did it right with it being a test to the series veterans with muscle memory from prior games, and allowing new players (technically me in this scenario) a fair chance at a hard difficulty to start and test themselves if they so choose to.

I know I'm probably not stating anything new from other reviews and analysis of the game and Critical Mode, but I wanted to reiterate this point anyhow.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is a fun game that balances it's difficulty with the player's skills and understandings of its mechanics. It's a fun game to play if solely to just play a game, and that's great to me - it can allow players to just pick it up with no care to the story if the don't care about it and just invest themselves into the gameplay.

KH3 as a story to the audience.

The Kingdom Hearts series is well know for its outlandish and incredulous story of "hearts and light and darkness", one that has been nit-picked and over-analyzed to all of its faults, mainly the writing and ret-conning of the plot and characters and everything. That is still relevant here even in the finale, in the ending where everything about the story and characters and plots are meant to have properly developed and brought closure to the audience with everything in the series and/or franchise. Bc we can't have proper development and closure to KH now can we coughseasaltriocoughKairicoughXehanortsmotivationcough?

3 follows the lore and story telling method that Dream Drop Distance has with focusing on this games story and plot points, and having a Glossary and Spark Notes tab for the points that reference or are directly involved with the previous installments. This is still a good way to allow player new and old to pick up the game and play it when they either have little to no experience with the series, or if they have experience with the series (either recent to KH2.8 or in my case from the OG KH2).

While the characters were given the obvious tropes that they blatantly forced fed us with most cutscenes (Trinity Trio dissing on Sora [pls dont do this the boy could suffer serious damage and mental breakdowns in reality], Kairi and Lea being cool chums, etc [IcouldbemakingthisupIdunnoitfeltlikeit]) it also had potential for more Actual character development between the characters we followed and grew up with.

It also ruined any potential for Xehanort to have some redeeming qualities as a villain but naw, just the usual cliche "The world sucks and Im gonna fixit by killing it" motive.

Naw das cool, totally wasn't this loafty goal of finding the truth about the series Namesake that we all thought he was going for, or for shits and giggles and experimenting with what ifs and whatnot back in BBS. Nope. Just an old man yelling at clouds... honestly kinda ruined the mood for me.

All in all KH3 followed the same story telling pattern that DDD has, and how if it was the first game of the series you played you didn't really need to play the others like with 1 and 2. Still have some questions about the series but eh, ces la vi.

My Thoughts

Honestly as a whole, I loved the game. Sure there were moments where I needed to stop and keep my cool, but playing on Critical Mode made my week playing it. It was a challenging and fun experience to play through.

The whole retconning of Xemnas and the Seeker of Darkness still left me disappointed despite the new and little character development they had (making me believe SoD and Xemnas are weird homunculus of Terra and Xehanort as different people) and the Plot Device for the final fight just sucked as was bad, no sugar coating there, but I'll still keep this game and everything within close to my heart.

Growing up and living my life alongside this series, I'm glad I was able to experience it all the way through from start to finish.

I may not have played all of them (BBS and DDD) but I still learned and experienced the story and characters in however way I can, either with other playthroughs or through Everglow's videos and such, but my love for this series will never die. I hope everyone gets to have these same feelings and experiences with whatever games they play, to reach some level of closure and finality, and to have fun and enjoy their stories with all the good and bad.

If any of you were keeping tabs on me and my run, I'll be going on a New Game + Lvl 1 run so you can expect that in the future. If I can, I'll find a way to stream it, but if I cant then I'll just be doing live posts like my original run through.

The Hollow review/summary/rant/explanation of why i hate the ending I wasn’t sure whether I should post this, but I did enjoy reading others experiences watching this show, so here’s mine under the cut. Edited from a convo with a friend.

Me: Okay so to properly express my disappointment i gotta take you through the major beats

The show starts with three teens waking up in an almost empty room, finding out they all have amnesia. They quickly solve a puzzle to escape the room, and just as quickly Adam and Mira realize they have superpowers (superstrength/agility and some weird 'speak to animals/know all languages' hybrid, respectively. also she can breathe underwater and swim really fast. its kind of vague)

Kai is already clearly a comic relief, discount Ron (from HP, the movies, no idea about the books) so me and sister correctly predict he'll get jealous of adam and miras relationship (even if there is none), gets pissy and jealous that he has no powers, but then finds out he has powers anyway he does, hes a fire bender. cant say im not bitter about that cause id put my money on invulnerability but eh its alright he has red hair after all hes still fun

ARE they dead? or in some kind of weird gvnmt experiment? some weird magical vampire guide (dont ask) hints they wanted this themselves ooh, intrigue. and the world is very very quirky they start in a gravity falls-y woods and then get teleported to a desert with minotaurs and witches, then get invited for tea by the Grim Reaper and the rest of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse

tbh Grim is the best part of the show but thats neither here nor there

anyway they have a magic map that updates once theyve been somewhere, and it shows them that the hot dry desert and the swampy wood bunker are like right next to each other

so you start thinking, how are they gonna explain that? this is too weird to be handwaved away. theyve gotta be going somewhere

they visit some other exotic locals, like what appears to be the set of Alien (complete with alien) and an abandoned old fair and a floating island with japanese inspired evildoers on it

the weird magic guide keeps showing up and being vague, dropping hints that there are other kids there etc

at some point Mira says "This is no time for games!" Weirdy: "Thats where youd be wrong~" me and sister: Aha! videogame! that connects all the dots, and also makes the tropes clear: small world with all kinds of different areas, quests, fights, superpowers, an updating map, fast travel Adam, a few eps later: guis i think we might be in a videogame me and sister: [high five]

Anyway in the meantime also the second predictable Kai (discount Ron) plot happens: they meet three other kids (boy boy girl) and they act shady but the girl takes an immediate and obvious interest in Kai so obviously theyre gonna manipulate him and have him betray his friends but in the end he'll see through their facade and kick their ass that more or less happens. The other teens also confirm that this is a game, and theyre trying to win. winning is done by bringing the MacGuffin to a tree fights over macguffin ensue situations are dire but our characters persevere

(also Mira kisses Adam and he acts very weird about it, almost as if hes gay and the only reason they didnt make it canon is censors) (no lingering gaze, just him going 'hehe yeah no thanks, its not you, its me', but in a very... he doesnt seem to be saying it with shall we say burning desire in his soul. hes literally just like 'eh youre a good friend.' Cool move, cartoon that made the two main boys have arguments over nothing cause of course the two main guys have constant dick measuring matches)

this all is not the offensive part btw it was all fun and games, its just a flash cartoon i wasnt expecting Shakespeare

anyway so theyre in a videogame, and apparently thats the answer to all the weirdness. A bit of a cop-out, cause thats a very easy answer, but eh, it works. it wasnt immediately obvious.

also something i hadnt mentioned yet: thisd be ideal for making (self-insert) OCs. Unique powers for each person, there are clearly more characters than shown, the world is your playground

and maybe the video game thing could be interesting on its own in the last few eps the game seems to be glitching out a lot they say its breaking apart so they really gotta hurry now maybe they were beta testers for a vr game gone wrong maybe this is part of it but its like a huge experience that you tell all your friends about anyway there are ways it could be cool, could be expanded to a season 2 despite having solved the mystery

but. last episode. our heroes get the MacGuffin, go to a final stage, and fight the Boss Battle (its a dragon). they enter the Castle....

...and the screen zooms out, into a sudden live action stage, where we see the cartoon (literally what you were just watching) on screen. there are 6 chairs, 3 with our heroes, 3 with the other teens, presumably. theres a host and hes dressed exactly like the weird guy (and that was already kind of a clashy outfit in the cartoon). it was all just a game show. but. the worst part is the live action

you. dont. go. from. animated. to. live. action.

other way around? fine, can work. But now? WHY itd still be dumb and dissapointing but if itd been animated too itd at least have been.... nice to look at but the acting.. oh god they didnt even say anything and it was all wrong clearly theyd just picked the first random teens that vaguely looked like the chars and put them in there cause they had no lines so who needs acting?!

the enemy teams girl had, in the cartoon, pink hair. Purple with pink highlights instead of stylizing that into something more realistic or painting the actual hair, they gave some 30-year old woman a wig and called it a day

keep in mind i binged this show in one go

purposely stayed up late to watch the last ep with my sis even tho we shouldve gone to bed and were disobeying our dad cause we Had to Know

and theres more i said they had no lines but i was lying. Kai did have a line. well, his voice actor did they dubbed him also the line was about him having to pee which is already not the most hilarious in animated version but a live action kid whose supposed to be this character you spent 3 hours with but looks nothing like him saying that in a voice that doesnt belong to his throat, as he stands bashfully in front of a live audience, the only words spoken by your main characters in the last moments...

oh oh one more thing at the end the six kids stand in a line and kai is next to other girl they glance at each other and as the eyes of this teen and 30 year old in wig cross, her eye glitches for a moment

i mean, im an animation fan so ill still watch but if theyd wanted to be bad on purpose they really shouldve done a better job fleshing out the characters thats what people come back for that was a bit of a sidetrack BUT so i said why the live action itself was just terrible in overal quality

but the resolution that 'oh it was all in a game show' doesnt work on multiple levels

first of all, they show a short flashback of "About 5 hours earlier". The kids stand on the stage and are instructed to take their seats in the vr-chairs, and pick their superpower

2 things i dislike about that

1) there goes all the self-insert/oc potential. they werent teens in over their heads, they werent gvnmt experiments, or just some kids who wanted to play a game -they were in it to win it, from the start. thats very specific and not the most appealing to all kinds of characters (goodbye, all the 'im just an average girl whod never step into the spotlight like that' characters).

Also, all the expansion on lore is gone. maybe there were other games simultaneously? eh, maybe, but theyd be all gameshows. Maybe someone ended uo trapped there for way longer? nah its just a gameshow theyre not gonna let anything actually bad happen. Maybe there are other worlds, other areas, other weird creatures? unlikely, they finished the map and familiarity seemed to be a thing for the audience. Now every new idea has to be put not through a 'whats interesting for a player' but a 'whats interesting for a viewer' lens, and whats a selfinsert if not a player in another universe

2) HOW IS THIS A SUCCESSFUL GAME SHOW

who the hell watches a game show for 5 consecutive hours, some of which mustve been just them walking. also, we zoom out of the screen were watching, so implication is that everything up until then has been what the audience has seen. but... we only followed the one team. there were two? why didnt the audience want to see what they were up to? ~reality tv usually thrives on showinf the worst assholes so realistically they wouldve been the focus~

There are also way too many times *both* teams couldve failed, from early on till late in the game. Not a single game i can think of thats played for an audience is set up like that, and especially not a televised one (okay tbf idk if this was televised, i dont remember if i saw cameras, but. it mustve. monetary reasons.)

What r u gonna do if they all 'died' from the monsters in the first ep? Call it a day? boring for the audience. let them restart from scratch? boring for the audience. the existence of an audience messes with everything

AND THEN ANOTHER THING what do you mean, "5 hours ago?" you never get a time stamp to show how long theyve been in there but there are some cuts, when they travel and such. The actual show is a lil over 3 hours runtime. You mean to tell me you sat through 2 hours of the characters just walking?

okay last thing. so. they were clearly second season teasing with the glitching eye thing. i already said this but. theres nowhere to go from here that isnt worse that the first season. your mystery is dead. you clearly know your live action teens cant act so youd have to go back into the game - but why would they do that? how would that be in any way interesting? you explored all there was to explore.

The other, more out there option, is that as you said the 'real world' was a fake-out and theyre still in a game. but. how would- how would you even make that remotely convincing? if youd just left the 'real world' gameshow as animated too this wouldnt have been a problem. but there is absolutely no conceivable reason to justify, in universe, why another meta-level up is 2D animation again unless they were in a game, in a game, in a game. and thats just dumb. yall aint inception

then there was the “adam ruins everything” segment where he literally just murders? everyone? like i get that its off screen for the younger audiences but also like he fucking murders everyone. literally! did i miss something? is it a good tactic now? did they think it was very villainous of him to murder people??????? god bring me back to the beginning when he actually has a good character reason for why faunus would follow him into revolution because this adam taurus is so bad he’s worth flushing down the drain for.

there are two bodyguards for the train. two? two. and for some reason they’re asking for dlc to provide more/personal protection? hello, did i miss something? anyone thought it was a good idea? what class of transportation did they get? if it was dangerous enough that on a train ride they’d need people to guard the journey it wouldn’t even be built there? or what, did they get a max-luxury, train ride with insurance kinda deal? and it had two (2) bodyguards? two (2)!!!!! or was it in the middle of the road??? i may have enough context for the environment but none on economy of this place i swear

genuine dislike for the tactic of qrow fights the Big Boss and everyone gets a handful of weaklings; to stall? possible. but also just feels like a bad tactic overall? also their animations always look like they’re doing an rpg battle; one ability used + animation! then return to original position. that’s a big fallacy of fighting monty oum style and i genuinely hope they recognize it soon

“YOU’RE ATTRACTING THE GRIM TO THE PASSENGERS” ??? i get the part where leading them to the back of the train may help (having them all divided in sections [grim + hunters, passengers, front of train respectively] may help but how does automation attract grim again? like, turrets shooting at them would do so if they’re in range, and they all came from the back so they’d move along towards the middle, but also they wouldn’t continue moving forward? i guess? what im saying is they should really just be around jnxr + oscar instead of way forward in front

when the bodyguard tried to get into the train and barely made it, that SNAP sound was just. raw. i felt that. good! i was very scared/horrified/eager to see if they’d literally break off his arm and he’d just be lying there in a pool of blood or something in shock. he didnt because of aura and i don’t know what to say because a/ it definitely wouldn’t be a bruise and b/ if he had aura and was in the bodyguarding business, wouldn’t he also have a proper semblance to fight off grim most likely? and he aint using it so why he so confident for dlc earlier the heck

“WHY WON’T YOU TELL US THAT” yang’s line here assumes that they’ve asked about it before and ozpin/oscar refused to answer. i disagree? i think it works better with “WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL US THAT?” because it definitely was a factor they’d all have to take into account with regards to travelling w/ it in the first place. which they are. tbh yang (and jaune in the op) has every right to be mad at him real talk but also change that line please it bothered me so much

blake sees the hooded adam figure and honestly idk what kind of omen that is but it feels/looks weird. another no context scene i guess. tbh id take that one out of this episode entirely and shuffle it next episode probably. (and put the adam ruins everything scene at the back of the episode)

grim stop chasing because tunnel. and then they chase the train through the tunnel really slowly? feels weird but okay i fuckin guess; these are just the things im willing to pass on

ren and jaune look at each other like “lets do it” but why does ren? look up? like there’s no extra effects there, its not visible that he’s trying really hard to extend his semblance out. no cool semblance-using eye powers there. it feels kinda cheap for him to do that w/o any additional highlights that he’s activating his aura? also creepy

OH THERE’S THAT SCENE. yang starts off the Big Fight Montage with grabbing the grimm by its horns and then flips it around. cool move! then she promptly punches it up and closes her eyes. what? tbh that was ridiculously weak after a stupid good setup. budget aside i’d say there was an opportunity for a focused choreograph there; instead of a punch up, use a bullet fire up, keeping the enemy’s front half up in the air for a longer period of time. run under, punch/kick the underbelly, bounce off to the side, bullet fire off the side of the train. 

blake cutting off the tail was a good move. rt studios deciding to change shots when the enemy has the same pose, so that we cut to ruby fighting the same kind of grimm is not. it breaks clarity for the viewers, that’s not how matching cuts should work tbh

these big grimm dying in a couple of hits are also just? kinda weak-feeling. like these characters got stronger from rpg levels, but not from actual combat training and learning to outsmart your enemies, or upgrading your weapons. feels cheap.

ruby bouncing around in attempt to kill these grim is kinda cute? which may be what they were trying to do? but also not well choreographed i guess. it doesn’t flow too well, just bounces in seperate spikes.

when weiss redirects the flying grimm to ruby, it feels like its? not clear what she did. was it a semblance/shield? colour that blue, we know she uses white but white on white doesn’t work out well. ruby’s scythe sinking into the grimm also doesn’t work great because you get confusion when the shot is supposed to show it sink into the grimm, but you cant see the scythe blade sink into it. like you could only get it from context after watching it that she sent the grimm flying by doing the above, but dont recognize the action in the moment.

fireball just kinda looked cheap. there wasn’t a long breathy build up, and the fireball just feels way too fast (camera or distance?); reasonable that qrow would be hit by it, but cheap-feeling in the sense that it shouldn’t have happened/it felt unfair, that it happened. he should’ve gotten knocked on his ass by power/strength and being caught off guard, and it felt like more like “oh no he got knocked down! D:”

IN THE NEXT SHOT YOU MAY SEE HER AT THE LEFT BUT HER SEMBLANCE IS BLACK TO MAKE HER STAND OUT MORE BUT THEY DIDNT DO THAT FOR THE PREVIOUS SHOT WHY????????

“YANG!” yang promptly bounces off a grimm that isnt shown to have hurt or is dead from the fight and runs off to the bigger grimm as called. understandable, but the other grimm? is just? there? not dead? not doing anything???

also the we need to ground it idea feels really cheap? the grimm isn’t a problem because of its wings, it’s a problem because it’s being dealt with by one (1) person who decides it’s best fighting it on one (1) front vs two on a train. there’s so many ways to tackle this guy! we know qrow’s capable of jumping onto it, but all he’s doing is that, instead of moving to the other side and maybe catching it off guard?????? qrow, fight fucking better.

s/o to qrow/ruby pulling off a move together, cute but also they should’ve been slicing it at different points of the grimm, because they would’ve just died right away if they both went on the same plane? or anywhere near each other? weapons are fucking dangerous we remember right?

Just now thought of that. I'm glad he does but it seemed like quite the leap from before or was it a gradual thing as I'm suspecting? I just cant see Boyd caring for E in Interludes like he does in Fade lol Still love it though! I love Boyd

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS FOR ICOS! :D

2 - answer continued from last ask - I put this one behind a cut because I wrote a lot and it ended up having more specific spoilers.

Regarding Boyd caring, he started to give a shit surprisingly early on, but really started actually caring more in Interludes, but like, more toward the end of it. In Afterimage, there’s that whole scene where E shows up at Boyd’s house and Boyd’s like FUCK OFF ASSHOLE GET OUT at first, but E ignores him and they start talking. There’s a part there where Boyd realizes E = LMC, and since LMC was pretty arrogant but actually helpful, Boyd immediately re-evaluated what he thought of E. He had gone into the idea of E loathing him because of what E had done to Hsin, but realizing E was also LMC meant he couldn’t all be bad. And since being LMC without saying HEYOO GUESS WHO I AM? :D despite seeing Hsin all that time, made him both kind of an asshole, but also mostly a big fucking dorkball in Boyd’s mind. And so he was like -- ”jfc, if you’re THAT fucking awkward about emotions, then yeah, I can translate you by using my Hsin Translation Skills.”

Early Interludes, Boyd still wasn’t sure exactly what he thought about E but he realized pretty much right away that E really cares about Hsin. Loves him, in fact. And Boyd recognized that E was even worse than Hsin when it came to the idea of love or positive emotions... Hsin was awkward about it and wouldn’t really talk about shit, but his actions said a lot for what he was thinking. E was even more awkward, to the point that he tended to profess loudly all this shit that Boyd read right through and recognized often was the opposite of how he felt.

So pretty early on, Boyd gets E, and reads him pretty well. But he’s also kind of like *eyeroll* in most of Interludes because E’s so extra about everything. But Boyd also knew E could be relied upon to get shit done if it was sketchy or illegal and had to do with Hsin, so he kept him in mind. Also, Boyd didn’t want to make Hsin uncomfortable. He knew Hsin was kind of mad that everyone ended up loooooving E no matter what, despite Hsin being like BUT HE’S SUCH AN ASSHOLE WHY. Boyd didn’t want Hsin thinking Boyd liked E because of the mask he put on, because that mask was not Boyd’s jam at all and he would actually hate E if he was only like that. The reason Boyd liked E was because he saw so much Hsin in him, and so he thought maybe he could help E and Hsin reconnect, if they needed it. He kind of felt like they just both needed their words and actions translated to each other, because they were both such morons when it came to love. But E was way more of a moron than Hsin. 

But, knowing that it upset Hsin (because at one point in Interludes maybe? or late Afterimage? Hsin basically tells Boyd it kind of frustrates/annoys him that even Boyd was sort of defending E), Boyd tried not talking about E too much around Hsin except where it made sense. And it’s not like E and Boyd hung out much so most of the time, it wasn’t really something where it mattered that much what Boyd thought about him.

But yeah, Boyd had actually kind of liked E from that moment he first talked to him as E. It’s just that if you read that scene, he went into it HATING E because he thought he was the lowest human being on the planet for what he did to Hsin, until he learned he was LMC and then he did an immediate about-face and reassessed his feelings. I forget how much made it on page there, but that’s basically what was happening internally. 

It’s not like in that scene he immediately loved E, it’s just that he immediately went, “Wait, maybe I owe him a chance to prove himself” and so he shoved his biases aside and spent most of Interludes kind of observing his behavior and determining what he felt about it. But pretty much right away he got that E is a dork. In Interludes - Masquerade or whatever it’s called where E and Boyd train, even there Boyd’s already seeing through E’s bullshit, and being like “yeah, yeah, you’re like a 2 year old who can’t say what he really wants to say because he’s too embarrassed. i’ll just react to you based on what you’re REALLY saying, not what’s coming out of your mouth.”

So generally speaking it was mostly gradual, except for his initial reassessment in his home back in Afterimage, where he did a total 180 on his willingness to listen to E’s side of anything in that single scene, based primarily on the knowledge that E = LMC. Because LMC had been a pretty decent dude who Boyd had felt like he could trust, for some reason, so E had banked up a decent amount of goodwill in Boyd as LMC. I mean, LMC was still fucked up, but he had saved Hsin’s life, and despite fucking with them he had also helped them, so Boyd’s overall review of LMC had been relatively positive. (I can’t remember if he knew back then - or ever - about E being involved in the whole attack on the compound thing, though. That would’ve brought his feelings back toward the negative. I feel like Boyd didn’t learn E was involved in that until way later??? Been too long, I forget.)

Ok so anyway back to the original question - all that above answers that question up until Fade.

The reason why, by those scenes in Fade, Boyd seems to care more about E in general, and specifically even more than his own mother, is because of all the shit that happened between Interludes and Fade.

Boyd felt betrayed by both his mother and the Agency. He was incredibly fucked up mentally and emotionally, and losing Hsin was the most devastating blow that could have happened. Carhart didn’t seem super sympathetic to Boyd and as I mentioned in another ask, Boyd’s belief that he could inherently trust Carhart with his vulnerability was already shaken in Afterimage when Carhart made it absolutely clear (Boyd felt at the time) that Boyd meant nothing to him compared to Hsin. Kind of a feeling like - if one of you has to die, doesn’t matter which of you made the choices that lead to that ultimatum, either way Boyd should die and Hsin should be saved no matter what, because Hsin is inherently more valuable regardless of anything else. 

It’s not like Boyd hated Carhart or anything but he had felt safer going to E with things emotionally than Carhart because E was jacked up but at least he was a jacked up Boyd could translate. The only translation Boyd knew to do for Carhart was more in line with his mother, which is to say, he saw it like this: Carhart is as honest a person as his mother is. Which means if they tell you they hate you or wish you were dead, they mean it. Not like if E or Hsin tell you they hate you or wish you were dead, at which point they’re actually saying they like you a lot and it annoys them that they feel that human emotion of liking you so they lash out. 

So in early Fade, when Carhart wasn’t very open to Boyd (because he himself was shut down emotionally after everything), Boyd didn’t really have anywhere to go. He was super fucked up and he just needed someone to understand how fucked up he was and not judge him for it -  someone who loved Hsin as much as he did, so would understand. Carhart loved the holy hell out of Hsin, that wasn’t a question. But Carhart’s way of dealing with his loss was kind of being guarded, which was understandable, but not something Boyd could deal with mentally properly at that time. It felt like punishment to Boyd. He needed someone to talk to him, to let him feel like he was in a safe space, and Carhart at that time felt as cold as Viv did in terms of being an open safe space.

So that’s why Boyd goes to see E... first of all, because he’s really hoping that E somehow fixed everything and this is all a lie and etc etc. But also because he knew E wouldn’t lie to him. E wouldn’t shut him out. E would have been as fucked up as Boyd felt, because E had clearly lashed out and gotten himself in trouble. Which meant Boyd felt he could trust E more there. After all, there was nothing Boyd had done or that he felt now that he thought E would judge, since with E’s background, he seemed more likely than anyone to understand.

Hsin was the main bonding agent for Boyd with E in Fade, and that’s why going forward Boyd started trusting and caring about E even more. Not only because E reminded him of Hsin, but because E was the one person Boyd knew loved Hsin as much as he did and who got as fucked up by him being gone as Boyd was.

Also, in that infamous scene with E and Boyd, even though things got all fucked up between them later, in the beginning of that scene, they seek each other out because of overwhelming grief. And when Boyd was super vulnerable in the start of it, when Boyd expected that E with his history of drug abuse would totally let Boyd get into shit without even thinking about it, E stopped him. Even though Boyd was angry about it, E still stopped him. 

And that meant the world to Boyd, especially afterward. That one moment of stopping him without judging or chastising him, of just being like “yeah I get it, I know why you want it, but nope-a-dope, bro, my boy would kill me” showed Boyd more than anything that E cared, but also that E would help him when he was at his lowest. That E wouldn’t try to use him and throw him away or betray him like the Agency had, like he felt his mother had, like he even felt a little like Carhart had. Especially right after the whole Aleixo thing, where he spent so long being hurt by others for their gratification, that gesture of E’s cut through Boyd and showed him that E didn’t want to use and betray him like everyone else. E was fucked up, definitely, but so was Boyd. They may make stupid decisions sometimes, but at least when it came to each other and Hsin, they had good intentions. And for Boyd at that time, that meant the world.

By the time the whole thing with Carhart happened, Boyd was more concerned with E than the others because Boyd felt like Carhart and Viv were similarly built mentally, even though so much about them was SO different and opposite. But it seemed like both of them could use other people who were close to them and then just shut them out and down without warning, seemingly outwardly without any feeling about it, if it benefited them or their careers. Boyd felt that Carhart had done that to Boyd himself more than once, even though other times Carhart had also helped. And it hurt Boyd deeply every time. But Carhart also cared about the Agency, same way Viv did. Because of that, sometimes they were in shitty positions where they didn’t really have a good choice. 

But Boyd knew people like E didn’t really function that way of cutting off emotions suddenly. He knew E loved Carhart, and he knew that love was pretty much the hardest thing for E to acknowledge, and he knew that would make E really vulnerable to Carhart. And with Hsin not around, Boyd probably identified more with E than anyone. He felt like E could have really put a lot of his vulnerability into loving Carhart, believing Carhart to be the trustworthy and stand-up dude Boyd had once blindly thought him to be too, and since Boyd knew for himself how hard it was to trust others with his vulnerability and exactly how much it cut him to the core to have that vulnerability be taken advantage of or used against him, he felt like in the group of E, Carhart, and Viv, E was the one most likely to be hurt. Because E was the least calculating of them. Of the three of them, Boyd assumed E was most like him in that way, and so he was most concerned with E feeling like he was being used and betrayed. And since E was way more unpredictable than Carhart and Viv, Boyd also worried about how crazy E could go if he suddenly decided FUCK IT about everything, since he thought that the main reason E hung around the Agency was for Hsin (now no longer a factor) and Carhart. If Carhart betrayed E, what would happen?

I guess the tl;dr on it all is - Boyd originally liked Carhart because he felt like a kind, safe, genuinely good person to be around... someone who would protect him. He felt like Carhart really cared about him after a point, and that he wanted him to succeed. Basically, Carhart was his father figure. The dad he had now, after his real dad was killed when he was so young. It was something Boyd desperately needed and wanted, and it helped him start to come out of his shell more to feel like someone was there as a parental figure who he could trust not to hurt him the way his mother had so many times. That was why it hurt so much when he felt later like Carhart suddenly turned on him and made it clear Hsin would always be his only REAL son, and Boyd was just like, the annoying neighborhood kid they let into the house to eat their cereal sometimes because it was easier letting him in than not. Boyd may feel welcome in that home, but he wasn’t actually family, and never would be. In the end, he would always be meaningless on any scale including the REAL children. It was a reminder, therefore, that the person who would have loved him above all others like Carhart did for Hsin, was not Carhart but was his dead dad. In other words, Boyd would never have anyone who would care about him and help him and never hurt him, who would be his parental figure, and who would always be there without judgment if he faltered. That person did not exist for Boyd. That person only existed for Hsin.

E was someone who never pretended to care about Boyd at all, let alone more than anyone else. E never made Boyd feel like he could be a father figure, or like he would always be there to back Boyd. E never even pretended to be reliable for Boyd emotionally. E was just there, doing his thing. But because of that, Boyd came to really trust and rely on him, because he knew E wouldn’t lie to him. E wouldn’t convince him it was okay to give him that vulnerable side of himself only to throw it out with the garbage when it wasn’t convenient anymore. E never pretended that Boyd mattered to him as much as Hsin, just so he could later make it clear to Boyd’s face he meant nothing compared to Hsin. E simply acted like Boyd was just some weirdo kid fucking his son, and they got along surprisingly well and could talk about whatever because they didn’t really care if they offended each other. And so Boyd trusted him more, because E would never be able to hurt Boyd as severely as Carhart or Viv could and had. Sort of like how Boyd had come to trust going to Kassian with certain things at one point because it didn’t matter what Kassian thought of him at that time, not the way it mattered to Boyd at the time what Hsin thought.

For Boyd, he’s just very guarded with certain things because he’s been burned too many times. And so, for him, he trusts people the most when they don’t lie to him, or when their honesty isn’t telling him he’s worthless or meaningful only at the convenience of someone else. In Fade, those feelings were even stronger. In Evenfall, he still believed in people more, and it was that willingness to eventually take a chance on trusting others that got him burned at different points, and by Fade made him realize people could be good people or predictable people and that’s fine, but if they didn’t want to prioritize him in any way then they were most likely going to make a choice at some point that would devastate him because they were placing other values higher than him. Which didn’t make them inherently bad, or anything. 

It was just that by then, Boyd was tired of being collateral damage. He had been that pretty much his whole life, and he no longer wanted to bear his heart to people who couldn’t be trusted with it.

That’s why E felt like the safer person for him, and why he ultimately was more worried about E than anyone. E never really said or acted like, “You, Boyd Beaulieu, you matter to me” and so Boyd felt like it wouldn’t rip him apart if E would ever later suddenly decide to make it clear Boyd didn’t matter at all. And by that point, E was the last person Boyd had who totally got why Boyd was so completely fucked in the head and who loved Hsin as much as he did. Which meant E understood how those two factors could sometimes overlap in really jacked up ways.

I feel like I took a million words to say the same thing over and over in varying ways. Sorry about that -_- I just find it so hard to explain because some things probably feel a bit contradictory between what’s seen of characters on the surface by other characters vs the way Boyd internalizes and interprets things. Carhart and E are a perfect example of that, because Evenfall Boyd trusted Carhart SO MUCH and really liked him and cared about him, and hated E from the stories he’d been told. But Fade Boyd felt like Carhart could turn on him at any second but not do it to be a dick, just do it because he wouldn’t realize or necessarily care about the impact it might have on Boyd because Boyd didn’t really matter to him except in very specific circumstances, all of which were based on what was convenient for Carhart and not what was needed emotionally by Boyd. And E, meanwhile, was more reliable to Fade Boyd because E didn’t lie to him by pretending he cared about him in the first place, so if E suddenly turned on him it wouldn’t really hurt or even feel like a betrayal.

I guess the even more tl;dr way of saying all of that is in Evenfall, Boyd didn’t have high hopes of anyone and expected people to ignore him but he still believed in the possibilities of others, and in Fade, Boyd expected people to use and betray him and then act like he was at fault for reacting to that.

I’m probably just making everything way ++++++ more confusing by now so I’ll stop.... jfc -_-

btw it was probably clear because I tried to word it this way, but everything in this post is based on how Boyd saw things and how Boyd interpreted things, regardless of how the other characters saw their own actions or intended them to be interpreted.

[49] Glitch in the System - Fight Club

Dirty fighting happens.

“It is time to go,” Widow said, hands on her hips as she stood in Sombra’s doorway with an impatient look edging her features. She was dressed to kill - literally - in loose sweats and carrying a bag of sparring pads over her shoulder. Somehow she managed to make pre-workout look good. She made everything look good.

It was a trap and Sombra knew it.

“Busy now,” she replied, resolutely not looking back at her. She was sitting at her desk for once viewing something on her screen, its importance questionable, but she’d have read through a binary translation of one of Widow’s old French tomes if it made her look too busy for sparring. “Maybe next time.”

“You cannot continue skipping training,” Widowmaker sighed, dropping the bag at her side. It hit with a louder thump than usual, and Sombra wondered if today was training with weapons or if the woman was just extra vexed at her refusal. “When is the last time you went?”

Sombra shrugged, making a show of thinking about it. Three months ago. “Last month?” she said instead.

“Non, not as I recall. And anyway,” Widow continued, lips pursed in disapproval, “more is better than less. It is important we stay sharp.”

“I’m not an assassin, cielito,” Sombra replied dramatically, swinging around on her chair so she was looking through her hard light screen at the other woman. The light distorted her face, and she wiggled around until Widowmaker’s eyes were side by side and her nose had disappeared in the refraction. She grinned stupidly, her expression wicking away every ounce of professionalism in her words. “I’m an information analyst.”

“An information analyst who carries a gun and has a body count,” was Widow’s unphased, stern response, which Sombra had a hard time taking seriously while the sniper had no nose.

“Part of the job,” Sombra replied offhandedly. “Sometimes you look at computers - doesn’t mean you need to practice hacking them.”

“The instances in which I need to ‘look at computers’ are far fewer than the times in which you need to engage in acts of violence.” Widow wasn’t budging on the topic. Sombra wasn’t surprised. She shifted her screens so Widow’s nose returned, but her left ear vanished and her forehead was inhumanly pointy.

“That’s why I keep you around,” she said, smiling sweetly through the flickering purple screen. “Get you to do my dirty work.”

“Your dirty work,” Widow repeated, the note of incredulity in her voice enhanced by the arch of her left brow. “I have seen you pistol-whip a man and shoot him point blank in the head.”

“Heat of the moment,” Sombra shrugged dismissively. “Besides, that’s hardly hand to hand combat. I’m an opportunist. I make opportunities and exploit them.”

“You cannot define a word using the word itself.”

“Watch me.”

Widowmaker rubbed the bridge of her nose, eyes closed as she outwardly battled a deep vexation. “Regardless, you wouldn’t need to create opportunity if you would go to sparring like you are supposed to.”

“Maybe,” Sombra shrugged, leaning back in a resolute picture of stubbornness. “But where’s the fun in that?”

Widowmaker had no immediate rejoinder, her golden eyes fixed firmly on Sombra’s own. Sombra could almost see the complex machine that was her brain cranking furiously, and watched as she creased her eyebrows thoughtfully. “Does Gabriel know you have been skipping training?” she asked finally, her voice far more flippant than the inherent threat heavy in the words themselves.

Sombra shifted her screens to the side so she could look at her clearly. “Maybe.”

“Sombra.”

“I make sure my time is logged,” she said evasively, quickly trying to calculate her intent.

Widowmaker nodded slowly and looked down at her wrist. “Well, we have lost ten minutes already. Perhaps we can forego training today, and review past training videos,” she said, eyebrow raised threateningly. “Perhaps I can ask Gabriel to recall them so you can study your technique?”

Sombra watched as she punched in the first three numbers of Gabriel’s personal comms number, looking up pointedly as she did. “You wouldn’t,” Sombra said under her breath.

“Ah, but I would, mon coeur.”

“No mames,” Sombra swore, swiping her console away in a shower of angry sparks. “You’re terrible.”

“Oui. It is as they say,” she said, smiling just enough to irritate Sombra further, “‘tough love.’”

Sombra groaned. “Let me get dressed.”

“See you downstairs in ten,” Widow replied sweetly, and Sombra watched her walk away with a sway to her hips that only accented the air of victory she’d left in her wake.

“Oof,” Sombra exhaled as Widow punched her for the fifth time in the stomach. The first two she’d chalked up to being rusty; the rest she had to admit were just because she was terrible at close combat. “Stop that.”

“The pain is your teacher. Block and you will be fine.” Widow sidestepped backwards with the grace of a dancer, her extensive background in ballet showing in her footwork and agility. Sombra was pretty sure there wasn’t punching in ballet, but clearly it was a skill Widowmaker had no problem picking up in more recent years.

“I can’t block if you keep hitting me,” Sombra answered sourly. Even so, she made a good faith effort at protecting herself from Widow’s next blow. Miraculously, it seemed to work, for that and the next, and the next after that. For a moment, Sombra felt the familiar light of success ignite inside her, and she felt good.

At least until Widow’s next blow was a fake to her left that landed square in her jaw.

“Ya valió madres,” she cursed, nearly spinning around from the hit. Their sparring gear helped prevent injuries, but it did little to soften the impact of a well-placed fist. “Can we be done yet?”

Widowmaker stood back, hands behind her back. She hadn’t even broken a sweat yet. “It has been five minutes, Sombra,” she replied, her unnatural patience even more maddening than usual. “It is unlike you to admit defeat.”

“I’m not admitting shit,” she replied, narrowing her eyes. “I’m out of my element. It’s not fair.”

“What was it you said?” Widow asked, canting her head in a maddening display of cool superiority. “‘Where’s the fun in playing fair?’”

“Low blow, spider, spitting my own taunts back at me like that.”

“Allow me to aim a bit higher this time.” In a move Sombra only barely saw coming, Widow faked her yet again, hooking an ankle behind Sombra’s and flipping the smaller woman forward over her leg. She grabbed her collar before she hit the ground, saving her from an uncomfortable fall onto the padded floor.

“For fuck’s sake Widow,” she choked, and Widow hauled her back to her feet. “You can’t even let me take my punishment properly.”

“A deviation from the norm,” she replied demurely, and Sombra blushed.

“This is why I forge my attendance records.”

“And perhaps evidence as to why you should not.” Widowmaker placed her hands by her sides and stood tauntingly close to Sombra. “Shall we start with the basics?”

“I know a trap when I see one, araña,” she said, narrowing her eyes at the obvious bait and taking an involuntary step back. Widowmaker fell into a combat stance and hooked with her right, landing a glancing blow on Sombra’s shoulder.

“Did you not get into fights in Dorado?” Widow asked, sounding genuinely curious, but utterly unable to shelve the self-satisfied smirk reaching across her face as she levied another hit towards Sombra’s cheek.

“Plenty of them,” Sobra said, dodging at the last minute.

“And you came away with nothing from this,” Widow asked. She was trying to goad her into attacking, assailing her with a barrage of lazy, easy hits to push Sombra into making a careless move. It was a good tactic, all told; Sombra was certainly eager to smack her after she’d effortlessly wiped the floor with her for the past several.

“Not entirely,” she grumbled. “Just nothing like this weird battle dancing you do.” To be fair, Sombra had ample experience in the art of hand to hand combat. She’d learned in real time, on the streets, as a gut reaction to situations in which her livelihood or her life had been in danger. While Widow’s combat expertise had been born of trained agility and precision, Sombra’s had been the result of survival and getting along by the skin of her teeth.

Now that she thought about it, arms raw from hits she hadn’t been fast enough to counter, she realized she might have an advantage in this skirmish after all.

“Battle dancing,” Widowmaker smiled, moving like liquid as she watched Sombra deep in thought. “A fitting term.”

Sombra smirked in response, and changed her perception from the sparring ring to a cluttered alley, and Widow was no longer a frustrating challenge but a rival gang member with a shiv and a grudge.

Sombra looked around as Widow bobbed and weaved before her, taking pot shots at the sniper with no real intention of hitting her so much as moving her into an advantageous position.

“Apagando las luces,” she whispered, the old phrase bringing back a slew of memories as she used it not to destroy a mechanical neural network but bring her shoulder down as Widow swung for her head that was no longer where it should be. The sniper faltered, a look of shock crossing her face, and Sombra rushed forward to bridge the gap.

Her shoulder hit Widow in the stomach, knocking the wind audibly out of her as she slammed her body into the taller woman’s solar plexus, sending her backwards over a pile of blue mats at the edge of the sparring ring. Widowmaker had no chance to recover, toppling backwards without an ounce of grace in a heap that Sombra couldn’t help but laugh at as she tumbled right along after her.

“Gotcha,” she said, landing gracelessly on top of her. She could almost ignore the throbbing pain in both her arms and stomach in the face of her sudden, unexpected victory.

Widowmaker looked up from where she lay, flopped over the pile of stacked mats, splayed on the floor with the other woman sprawled on top of her. “That was terrible form,” she said, making no move to get up as Sombra rested her elbows alongside Widow’s head.

“Well it wasn’t your fancy fucking jiu-jitsu, but I still won the fight,” Sombra replied.

“Through deception.”

“Through savvy,” she replied, shaking her head and bringing her face closer. “You were right.”

Sombra could feel Widowmaker’s hands creeping up her back. “I was?” she asked, voice shifting from reluctance to a soft purr.

“Yeah,” Sombra said, pressed against the length of her. “I do know how to fight.”

“You certainly know how to brawl,” Widow agreed against her ear, lips brushing along her neck. “With zero finesse.”

“Whatever,” Sombra grinned, pulling back just out of reach, unwilling to give up her victory so soon. “You’re just sour you lost.”

“Am not.”

“Are too.” Sombra laughed and allowed Widow to hold her in place as she pressed her hands to either side of her face and gifted her with a deep kiss.

“This is different than how we sparred in Overwatch,” Gabriel’s voice announced, his voice rough and sudden, but nurturing enough amusement that Sombra didn’t bother standing right away.

“Not what I’ve heard,” she muttered to herself. Widowmaker smirked.

“Excuse me?” Gabriel said, and Sombra didn’t have to look back to see his eyebrow raised.

“Nothing, boss,” she replied, and pushed herself to her feet. “Just teaching Widow how to fight dirty.”

Gabriel grimaced and Widowmaker made a noise of deep discomfort. “I see,” he said, fighting to keep a smile from forming on the black wisps emanating from his lips. “Well perhaps you can continue this particular lesson elsewhere. I need the gym for some recruit drills.”

“Absolutely,” Sombra laughed, hauling Widowmaker up from the ground and pulling her towards the door.

“Oh, and Sombra?” Gabriel added as she trotted across the gym.

“What?” Sombra asked, immediately suspicious.

“You owe me three months of training. I expect to see you here again,” he said, not turning from where he stood, a scarred shadow with its arms held behind its back. Sombra knew without any question that the fucker was grinning like an idiot. “Double time until you catch up.”

“Oh for fuck’s sake,” she sighed, pressing her fingers to her forehead.

“Is this a good time for an I told you so?” Widow asked, affecting innocence.

Sombra turned and walked away, leaving Widowmaker and her shit-eating grin to catch up later.

Through the Fire and the Flames, We Carry On

So, Honest Apple. This is the first episode this season I’m rating more negatively than positively, I think.

It’s not really my style to rail into things, and as a super fan I always find little things to love even in episodes I consider less than stellar, so this post isn’t a rage-boner, believe you me. I know some fans have grown averse to hearing criticism of the show they love because other fans have been so scathing in their analysis before, but hopefully we can take the burn out of it and focus on what’s interesting about it. Plus, yeah, there’s a number of cool details I can’t wait to get to. 

I’ll start with the major stuff, and get to the fun part later.

The major problem with this episode is characterization and the pacing of it. It’s not that it’s out of character, really, but that it’s paced in such a way that it might feel out of character. Sounds like a weird problem, but its a problem nonetheless.

The big one is Applejack. 

Spelling it Out 

It’s no secret that Applejack has a stubborn streak and can be stuck in her ways. She’s had to deliver hard truths even knowing the price. And, of course, she and Rarity notoriously tease each other for their frou-frou and rustic lifestyles respectively, so AJ doesn’t understand the appeal behind fashion.

Yet, I think this episode portrays her as too inconsiderate too fast.

Other analysts have pointed out that even if AJ doesn’t get the appeal behind a fancy hat, she could respect the amount of work that went into it. And if not that, her at this point long history with Rarity has clearly taught her to respect Rarity and her line of work a great deal.

And if not that, there’s the fact that Applejack usually isn’t thoughtless to other ponies feelings. It can happen if she’s, say, very angry or yes, even just very stubborn on an issue, but in most situations you’ll find her going out of her way to make her friends feel better.

While you can argue that it’s in-character, especially after episodes like Hearthbreakers and Winter Wrap-Up, the pacing almost makes it feel a little too far out of character. Going from reasonable and level-headed to not understanding the difference between opinion and fact as fast as Applejack does doesn’t quite work.

And I think this is mostly because of how the moral is handled.

Rarity needing to spell it out for Applejack, as funny as it is, makes AJ seem almost deluded. It takes her an exceedingly long time to figure out ‘wait... my opinions aren’t the most important thing???’ and at this point I’m talking in circles, but you can sort of see why this episode’s exploration of a character’s flaws doesn’t entirely work for me. It’s a little too much too fast.

The only other big negative is one that wouldn’t make or break the episode on its own, and ironically it’s one of the funnier gags the episode has to offer:

Rarity breaking out into a metal solo.

Immersion Break

Why is it a problem if it’s funny? This is a Pinkie gag. 

Pinkie is the one able to bust out the Random, the fourth-wall breaks, and the meta-humour. There’s a reason its usually limited to just her breaking out into 90s-inspired rap sequences or pulling Back to the Future references out of nowhere.

When you start allowing other characters the same powers as Pinkie or Discord, it messes with the immersion of the world. Now, I can totally buy Rarity having a Drama Couch on hand at a moment’s notice and not needing much of an explanation because as cartoonish as that gag is, it’s in her character to be that prepared and that, well, dramatic.

The guitar solo joke isn’t really. You don’t expect Rarity to be able to do that, which is why the joke works and even could be considered a subversion, but again, you don’t expect Rarity to be able to do that. 

Reason being: she’s not even really playing an electric guitar, meaning this is a meta joke for the audience where they even break out a flaming background. Meaning, she doesn’t normally know how to shred, she’s just illustrating a point to you.

It’s a bit too close to meta for comfort with a character like Rarity. Pinkie, I would have no problems with, but even if I find this funny, it did sort of pull me out of the world the first time I saw it.

So, I just spent a lot of time talking about the two things that bothered me, but do I really hate this episode? No.

In fact, there are some really neat things to love about it!

Details, Thoughts, and Whatnots

Sometimes you’re rewarded if you pay close attention to colours in Friendship is Magic. In this episode, when Applejack apologizes to Rarity and Rarity forgives her, the sky itself blends orange and purple to match how close they feel again:

The valley girl pony chokes on how much she can’t even. She’s actually gagging because she can’t even so hard. I love that the show staff interpreted ‘cant’ even’ as ‘can’t even breathe properly’

Goth pony and Maud would make great friends, don’t you think?

APPLEJACK WITH HER HAIR UP CONFIRMED FOR THE CUTEST THING:

The episode is 1000% worth its faults for that right there

I love how Applejack’s just walking in the background when Rarity announces her name. It makes for great staging and really funny sight gag when you know it’s coming. Good use of foreground and background, for sure.

While it felt sort of unnecessary to cutaway from Applejack’s decision after building up tension for it, that ending scene with Rarity and Applejack joking with each other is pure and adorable, more of that please

As always Pinkie showing up just to make funny jokes and help the main characters of the story is always, always welcomed. I love that her wanting guitar lessons could be its own subplot.

Speaking of characters that have an appearance in this episode, oh hey, Spike still has a crush on Rarity. I honestly thought he’d gotten over that in Inspiration Manifestation when Rarity told him how much it means to have him as a friend, but I guess the little guy still has hope. I would ship it harder if he wasn’t a dog compared to a Rares the human in the EQG/ human universe

I can’t get over how savage she was to Applejack. It’s the best thing. Just like, oh hey? You spend your entire life dedicated to this thing? It’s the worst fruit and full of worms and you disgust me kthnxbye~

Applejack crying when she realizes what she did wrong is a thing of beauty. I swear, this season seems to be the season of tears (which sounds like an insult but it isn’t)

Photo Finish and Hoity Toity! Long time, no see! Photo Finish is still clearly the superior pony, just announcing everything she does, but you know I love me some continuity, so it’s good to see them back.

There’s some good dialogue in this episode. Like I said, even if I didn’t buy how fast Applejack turned from in the right to extremely unreasonable, I love that her commentary on some things makes sense for her to say, like how she will never understand ripped jeans (she says, hiding her ripped shorts under the bed...)

So, all in all, definitely not the worst episode out there, but it’s problems are the first thing I think of when I think back on this episode. 

There’s some good, there’s some bad, but in the end, all of that is just my opinion anyway, huh?

Three hours later... 

Like clockwork Riley’s laptop rings with a video call request from Lucas. 

“Helllllooo,” Riley sings upon answering.

“Hello,” Lucas smiles at her chipper mood. 

“How was your day?” Riley asks, “What did you all get up to?” 

“Good,” Lucas nods, “We went to the bakery and then saw a movie.” 

“You know you don’t have to be brief with me?” Riley half smiles, “I like to hear what you’re all doing.” 

“I know,” Lucas gives her a small smile, “I just don’t want to upset you.” 

“I’m appreciative of that, but if I can’t be there with you I’d at least like to hear about it in great detail from you,” Riley lets out a quiet giggle. 

“Maybe later,” Lucas chuckles, “I cant believe we haven't already brought up-” 

“Don’t you dare tease me about my new uniform,” Riley buries her face in her palms. “Maya has been texting me jokes about it since I sent her the picture!”  

“I can see it hanging up behind you,” Lucas points to where he sees it on his screen. 

Riley tilts her head back to look at it in her room and groans. “I can’t believe uniforms are now apart of my daily life.” 

“Come on, it’s really not that bad,” Lucas says with a coaxed head. 

“You’re just saying that to make me feel better,” Riley squints. 

“Cross my heart,” Lucas brushes his index finger against his chest making an ‘X’. “You looked fine.” He says it sweetly, it’s not too much to make Riley embarrassed or send their conversation into an awkward down spiral. It’s just enough to make her feel better about it because she knew he meant more than ‘fine’ by the way he said it and she was right in thinking that because Lucas did know better than to say, “You look beautiful in anything.” 

“Thanks,” Riley says swaying nervously. Maybe saying fine was still enough to make her giddy. 

“So, do you know much about your new school?” Lucas asks. 

“Not really,” Riley shakes her head, “Just that it’s some fancy pants private school that my moms partner at the office recommended.” 

“Sounds posh,” Lucas holds out his pinky with a chuckle. 

“Positively,” Riley says in her best british accent and they continue to giggle together. 

“Are you nervous?” Lucas asks quietly once their laughter tapered off.

“Honestly, a little,” Riley stares at her hands in her lap as she fiddles nervously with her fingers, “It’s a completely new school in a different country and my dad won't even be there to look out for me..” 

Lucas knew already that Mr. Matthews got a new teaching position at a different school to the one Riley was enrolled in. Still, seeing her so nervous made his heart ache. 

“Kinda makes me sound like a baby doesn’t it?” Riley lets out a quiet scoff at herself, “That I rely on my daddy so much...” 

“Not at all,” Lucas tries to soothe her, “I was terrified on my first day when I transferred to John Quincy Adams...” 

“You didn’t look it,” Riley glances up at the screen. 

“I was trying to play cool,” Lucas folds his arms and gives Riley a wink. His attempt to make her laugh works and she lets out a giggle at his silliness. “We’re human, the nerves thing are apart of the package.” 

“I guess so,” Riley nods. 

“You’re loving London so far. Who’s to say you won't love your new school just as much?” Lucas continues to try and put the brunette at ease. 

“It’s starting to feel like less of a vacation now and more like my life...” Riley musters up a weak smile. “I mean... Sightseeing everyday, exploring, it was all so fun and exciting but now everything is slowing down and I’m realising that this is it now. This is my life. That’s scary.” 

Lucas gives her a sympathetic smile. He knows what she’s going through, maybe on a lesser scale since his big move was within the same country but he could at least sympathise with her to an extent. The two go back and forth for while. Riley showing obvious nerves about her pending change and Lucas does his best to comfort her. Eventually Riley says she should probably turn in and get some rest. Lucas understands and wishes her well. 

“Oh and Lucas..” Riley says and the Texan stops just shy of the end call button. 

“Yeah?” He matches her soft tone. 

“I just wanted to say that I miss you... With all the excitement the past few months I’m not sure I’ve said it enough but I just wanted you to know that even with the adventure, I still miss you.” Riley says quietly. 

“I miss you too,” Lucas smiles sweetly.

After the two hang up the call Lucas gets up from his desk and flops down on his bed. Riley was only being nice with her closing statement during the call but something about it made Lucas realise, for the first time properly since she’s left that they’re not together anymore. Not the physical kind of together, that he felt the loss of all the time, like the past week in school for example. Even the new History teacher sparked an ache in Lucas’ chest.  Riley’s ‘I miss you’, her fears about this being her life now, it made Lucas realise that they were broken up. He too just felt like she was on vacation, like she would be coming home soon. Lucas had almost been living the adventure with Riley the past few months. On a strange level he almost felt more connected to her with their calls then he had to her before she left. 

Lucas then worries that their conversations, their virtual communication the past few months was just two teens desperate attempts at holding onto something that no longer existed. Quickly, Lucas shakes his head at the thought. They were still them, even in different countries they were still Riley and Lucas. Nothing could change that, right?

The following morning Riley prepares herself for school. After dressing she combs her hair into pigtails on either side of her head. After nervously fidgeting with her uniform in the mirror a million times her phone beeping finally breaks her attention away. 

Topanga calls out to Riley saying it’s time to leave. Riley reaches her phone and checks the message. It’s Lucas. Grabbing her backpack she replies and keeps her eyes glued to the screen as she makes her way to the living room. 

Before Riley could respond to Lucas’ sweetness Topanga clears her throat. 

“Sorry mom,” Riley tries to contain her smile, “It was just Lucas wishing me luck.” 

“That’s very sweet of him,” Topanga says and Riley finally looks up from her screen and notices her mother is standing by a complete stranger. A boy around her age, also wearing a uniform. 

“Oh, sorry,” Riley is embarrassed she hadn’t noticed the unfamiliar persons presence. She slips her phone into her blazer pocket and looks to her mother for an introduction. 

“Riley, this is Finn,” Topanga says, “He’s Anne’s son, you know my partner at the firm?” 

“Oh right. You said she had a son that attends my new school.” Riley nods and turns her attention to the boy, “I’m Riley.” 

“Nice to meet you, Riley,” He wears a slight smirk and his accent - even though she’s been hearing them for months now - still makes the American giggle internally. 

“Finn is here to escort you to school on your first day,” Topanga says almost cautiously. 

“What?” Riley furrows her brows. 

“I’m taking Auggie to his school before work..” Topanga explains. 

“I know, I thought dad would take me,” Riley frowns. 

“It’s my first day too, kiddo,” Cory - whom had been flitting around the room getting ready - comes over to kiss Riley’s forehead, “I have to go. Good luck today.” After kissing his wife and son he disappears out the door. 

“Finn will ensure you’re taken care of this morning, honey,” Topanga says, “Come on, I’ll walk us all out.” 

Everyone exits the apartment and part ways on the street. Riley goes to walk towards her closet tube station but Finn stops her. 

“Where you going?” He asks with a raised brow. 

“To the station,” Riley pokes her thumb over her shoulder. 

“Not today,” Finn chuckles, “We’re taking the car.” 

Riley looks in the direction he’s pointing. She finds a black car across the street and a driver waiting by. Riley’s eyes widen in disbelief almost. Finn finds this amusing and nudges her arm with his shoulder. 

“We do things a bit differently here,” He says as he leads the way over. 

Different indeed. Better or worse? Riley couldn’t say, all she could do as she trailed behind Finn was remind herself of one thing, this is my life now.

OH MY GOSH

I’m doing a reread of the older books that MarkReads did, cos he released his reviews in ebook form after his first site’s hosting went down and we lost the original posts of them.

Its really cool cos he includes an entrie second review of everything that he does years later with all this hindsight and stuff, commenting on the series as a whole and how hilarious unprepared he was in the original review. As well as all sorts of other bonus features and footnote stuff of cool!

And he even edited out any predjudiced or uncomfortable jokes that he’d made back when he was less experienced as an activist for LGBT rights and mental health and stuff, like originally the review about the dursleys in harry potter was framed as a psychologist’s report about how craaaayzy they are, and now its a detective’s report on how criminal they are. Cos seriously its “just a joke” and all but it kinda has unfortunate implications to imply that literal abusive parents are only that way cos of mental illness rather than yknw.. making the choice to be abusive. the “joke” wasnt intentionally meant to be saying that but its still how it ended up. And the really good part about it is that he didnt just take the opportunity of the original site being gone to pretend like he never made those mistakes, he edits out the actual content of the controversy itself but talks about what happened during his self re-review bonus section at the back. And he talks about why exactly he felt that this review was innapropriate and how he’s changed since then. Cos seriously over these years he’s been diagnosed with depression himself and started getting help with it and tried to become a really welcoming community for other mentally ill people! And he was always out about being gay even when he started his first review of Twilight, it was like 5 seconds into the first review before he couldnt restrain himself from yelling “is this really how straight people flirt??” XD But he used to kinda be a bit awkward maybe and uhh.. that relateable feel of trying to be “one of the good ones” according to bigoted standards? Like “oh im gay but i dont act TOO gay and i totally make gay jokes about myself ha ha ha”. I obviously can’t know for sure because i cant read his mind, but the impression i got from the reviews is that this was why he made some of his more crude jokes earlier on, despite being an absolute cinnamon roll of a man who didnt seem to believe any of the bigotry behind them. Either that or just genuinely not knowing that jokes were bigoted at the time, yknow? We all make mistakes and a lot of people amoungst minorities have a history of stuff like this cos internalized shame is a hell of a drug. I internalized transphobic stuff so hard that i was terrified of admitting i was trans, and overcompensated with trans jokes to try and convince people i was normal. And i didnt even properly comprehend what being trans WAS, i had this bigoted messed up idea of something i should be ashamed of, something that was “sick perverts getting off on dressing up” so of course it couldnt be me because I just felt.. yknow.. unhappy with what i was born as? Not any sort of big devious evil reason for it, just “dressing this different way makes me not want to kill myself”. But here’s lil kid me being told that the Only Possible Reason to want to do that is Gross Pedophile Reason, thus I built a big old labyrinth around my feelings and blindly repeated the rude shit my parents said without even understanding what it meant. Sighhh it was a big ol mess!

ANYWAY IM GOING OFFTOPIC AGAIN

I just made this post cos its really cool to see how your favourite creators have changed, especially when they had personal growth like that as well as just getting more and more awesome at the things they create. And it really warms my heart to see Mark being at peace with his own mental illness nowadays, and having like one of the most well regulated forums ever that doesn’t accept any form of bigoted behaviour and strives to welcome people like he is right now, and educate.. well, people like he was back then! And he’s also become so much prouder in his sexuality and found people who support him for who he is, after his super harrowing backstory of being abandoned by his parents and emotionally abused by fundementalist christian authority figures. And he now has an awesome adorable goofball of a boyfriend who even joins in on guest reviews sometimes, and it is absolutely AMAZING to see them teasing each other singing theme tunes to stuff and just generally being the definition of relationship goals!

Cos i bought the old harry potter review ebooks, and IT TURNS OUT HIS BOYFRIEND IS HERE! He cameos in prisoner of askaban yeaaaars before they started dating! he was actually the friend who’d already read the series and reccommended it to mark, so he’s kinda responsible for kickstarting the entire MarkReads blog?? THEY WERE DESTINED TO BE TOGETHER AWWWW!! Seriously YOOO i was like “huh he mentions a friend here with the same name as- OH MY GOD ITS HIM” And his cameo appearance is a dual review just like the ones he’d do later on, tho here its a transcript of an IM chat rather than an actual video. Man this is so early on that they didnt even live close to each other! God its Love Origins, holy shittt

fuck NOTHING warms my heart more than seeing the journey my fave creators go on! this man has come so far and im so glad he’s in a better place than when he started!! he’s just so happy and bubbly in his current reviews and he started off so grumpy on that first Twilight review and his Harry Potter review was like a kid in a candy store cos he was GENUINELY SURPRISED TO FIND AN ACTUAL GOOD BOOK! Aaaa his future boyfriend’s reccommendation led to him recapturing his love of reading and starting a whole career out of reviews. God thats so romantic!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fuck! My bigass heart cant handle this!!

Years and many hard knocks later, those of us still standing are now aware of how lacking (to say the least) and possibly even misleading Rich Dad Poor Dad actually is. Quite literally, unless you find a way to break away from that original mentality, your efforts could amount to treading water (if you are lucky), and lots of pain (if you are less lucky). I suppose, in the spirit of intellectual honesty, we must preface this conversation with acknowledging that Rich Dad Poor Dad was likely never intended to be a true how-to manual with any valid technical data nor viable investment advice. Likely, the book was intended only as a big-picture motivational and inspirational tool. And as such, it was a complete and total success. And I, for one, have nothing but positive commentary to offer. After all, the book certainly motivated a slew of investors. However, continuing with this line of intellectual honesty, let us acknowledge that beyond being motivated, many of us started out with the belief that within the pages of that book was a bonafide formula an actual, intellectually cohesive, mathematically stable formula for investing in rentals. We Buy Income Property for Appreciation This is something sophisticated players figure out sooner or later. The best way I can illustrate this to you is like this: Suppose you have a small six-unit apartment building. You bought it five years back. You financed 100 percent of it because you read articles by Ben Leybovich. It cash flows about $500 per month. Nothing special. But nothing wrong with it. Rich Dad would approve. You get an offer to sell it. You worked hard to get the building. You like having it. You were looking for cash flow, and thats what youve got. And with no money in the deal, to boot. But, you realize that between the appreciated equity and principal pay-down, you would put in your pocket a x15 multiple on your annual cash flow if you do sell. In other words, if you sell, youd get 15 years worth of cash flow prepaid. Do you sell? Or, would you hold and keep the cash flow? Dont answer yet. This is as true with money as it is with food and relationships. For instance, if you read one of my articles before you are ready to internalize whats in it, not only will you miss the point, but you will likely think of me as a jerk. Time value is the concept. As this relates to money, the same $5,000 of cash flow 15 years from now is not all the same thing in terms of new preset value (NPV) as it is today. NPV essentially aims to conceive of future cash flows in terms of todays buying power and opportunity premium. What this necessarily means is that even if you were able to achieve the same level of cash flows 15 years from now as you can today, and even if you did set enough money aside for capex so that you wont need to cannibalize the cash flow, the value of these cash flows 15 years from now adjusted to net present value are much lower than youd think. Indeed, you better plan on making much more cash flow 15 years from now. Mathematically this is represented with the internal rate of return (IRR), XIRR, and modified internal rate of return (MIRR) (which allows you to select your own discount rate). But, those are more than I want to get into today. So, Do You Sell? I did. I sold that six-unit. I had bought it about five years prior. I financed it 100 percent. It made about $6,000 per year of cash flow. But, I sold it and put about $85,000 in my pocket, which I was able to reinvest in a way that doubled my cash flow. Mathematically, the reason I sold is because doing so represented infinitely higher IRR than not selling. In fact, this was about a 40 percent IRR in 5 years. But, the important syllogism here is this: Major premise: If we want outsized returns. Minor premise: If appreciation is necessary to achieve outsized returns. Conclusion: We must buy for appreciation. Conclusion With that said, our buy decision has to be based on appreciation. Which, of course, means that if youre focusing on cash flow as the goal, youre not doing it right. Cash flow has a lot to do with it, but its not the end goal.
