***Magnus and Alec are husbands. Yes, this needed to be said because CAN YOU BELIEVE? :’) But also, yes, it’s really been that long since the latest Malec fic rec. I’m sorry. It’s... yeah. Although if you also miss Malec every second of every day, reading fanfics at least helps a little.

I tried to collect a nice mix again so I hope you will enjoy this 9th (!!!) edition of my Malec fanfic rec posts. i’ve actually wanted to do a big fic rec for a while, so this is the perfect opportunity!

i’ve gathered a list of classic tropes and tried to pick one or two favorites for each! this is by no means a comprehensive list, and if you guys like this, i would be happy to do another edition later on! these are all mostly fluffy as that’s what i usually prefer, but as with most reylo fics there is a lot of explicit content, so please mind the ratings!

Arranged marriage? And Closer Still Is Never Enough - lovefrompluto (15K, E). sweet, tender & caring prince ben. rey is special, and he knows that. reminds me why i love fanfic - watching them fall in love a million different ways.

Best friends-to-lovers? i’ve been in love with you for ages (and i can’t seem to get it right) - akosmia (10K, T). when who you want is right under your nose, and not only can they give you everything you want, they want to. ben cares for rey without hope or agenda.

Bleed Me Dry, I Don’t Mind - AttackoftheDarkCurses (12K, E). best friends to lovers from two perspectives. a little growing up together, a little university AU. they slip into love without even realizing.

Canonverse? chase all your cares away - LovesBitca8 (4K, E). ben defects to the resistance. rey loves his smile and is determined to get one out of him.

Coffee shop? maybe i just wanna be yours - akosmia (13K, T). ben compulsively offers favors to rey’s friends. in return, they meddle. it’s a 5+1 (i am obsessed with those as you will come to find out).

Emotional hurt/comfort? thrilled by the still of your hand - akosmia (9K, T). canondivergent. ben is touch starved after… everything. rey helps. i cried multiple times, and i loved it.

Serotonin and Dopamine - pontmercy44 (28K, E). this is so unique. very realistic in the way that it shows the work that goes into a relationship. i won’t give away too much, but mental heath issues are integral to the plot, so be forewarned.

Enemies-to-lovers? Left Handed Kisses - Ever-so-reylo (18K, E). a reylo classic. assistant district attorney vs criminal defense lawyer. hatefucking turns into something more.

Epistolary (including forms of communication)? Hanging on the Telephone - jeeno2 (11K, E). rey gets a sext from a wrong number. sure, she should ignore it and move on. but where’s the fun in that?

our love was meant to be (my love came back to me) - BensCalligraphySet (3K, T). in this life, ben finds letters in a bottle from someone who seemed to know him in a previous one. the galaxy gives them another chance.

Fake dating? Let Me Dream, Let Me Stay - Melusine11 (38K, E). rey backs herself into a lie and asks her coworker kylo to pretend to be her boyfriend at rose and finn’s wedding. they roadtrip, they share a bed, they eat at a punny restaurant. so much fun!

Roommates? Closer to Fine - jeeno2 (15K, E). pregnant rey needs a roommate and moves in with medical student ben. there’s a lot to be scared about, but they’re not alone.

Someone You Love(d) - AttackoftheDarkCurses (39K, E). rey and prince!ben are college roommates. they end up spending break together with leia, han, breha, and padme. they claim to hate each other and misunderstandings ensue. so many tropes i can’t even list them.

Flower shop/tattoo parlor? alderaan places - nymja (5K, T). a classic take on a classic trope. it’s valentine’s day!

Friends with benefits? Making Love Out of Nothing At All - LoveofEscapism (4K, E). ben will do anything rey asks. so hot, but full of emotion.

Two to Tango - crossingwinter (6K, E). i love this one. absolutely nails the heart wrenching emotion of knowing you’ve made a mistake in the moment before you fix it.

Funny? First Order IT, Can I Get Your User ID? - krossartist (14K, T). witty banter and childish name calling with a small touch of hurt/comfort. adorable!

Harry Potter AU? the water smells like you - shruggyben (3K, G). every ship needs an HP ‘verse amortentia fic! feat. professor leia organa.

High school? The Buddy List - violethoure666 (23K, E). since reading it a few weeks ago, this has quickly become one of my favorites! if you miss the aughts this one's for you! AIM messenger drives the story.

Medieval/Royalty? Tangled, but Unbroken - AttackoftheDarkCurses (20K, M). growing up together, star-crossed lovers, alderaanian hair braiding - what more could you want? my fave tag on this: uncle luke is a reylo.

Neighbors? Flux & Solder - angharabbit (23K, E). another one of my all time favorites. new neighbors ben and rey help each other with trauma. feels like a rainy day from the thunder through the rainbow. make sure you read the tags before reading this incredible work!

Office romance? Minus 1 - Ever-so-reylo (5K, E). rey sends a text to the wrong office IM number. rey doesn’t know who she’s texting, but friendship and… more develops.

keep calm and let HR handle it - hi_raeth (11K, T). another 5+1! ben is the CEO and rey is the HR director. coworkers to confidantes to lovers. super sweet.

Oneshot? spring will come again - prncesselene (8K, M). over the course of a year, rey’s life changes completely as she renovates padme amidala’s old greenhouse.

Only one bed? under thy own life’s key - galvanator (23K, E). sexy with great emotional depth, but it’s the sequel trilogy gang that makes this stand out in the trope! makes me wish we got a post-TROS everyone-lives sitcom.

Romcom-inspired? if you’re ready comic get it - violethoure666 (28K, E). if You’ve Got Mail was with tumblr mutuals and a comic book store.

We Never Met - KyloTrashForever (3K, E). that scene in When Harry Met Sally where the older couple talks about meeting in the elevator. what happens when two people who are constantly just missing each other finally meet?

Slow burn? My Heart Always Belonged To You - JGoose13 (52K, E). Persuasion AU! reylo + jane austen = magic.

Soulmates? wholly to be a fool - bigfootsflannel (9K, T). when your soulmate confesses their love, their words appear on your arm. ben makes a drunken confession.

University/college? Sociology of Sexuality - Celia_and (4K, E). ben is that just-playing-devil’s-advocate kid in class that we all have to put up with. y’all this is so hot. if this happened in my real life, i think i would never recover.

Work-in-progress? flesh stays no farther reason - galvanator (20K, E). i drop EVERYTHING when this updates! ben and rey are from completely different circumstances, but that doesn’t stop a hookup from turning into something more. i feel like this fic gets their dynamic so right, and i am anxiously awaiting the conclusion in two chapters!

My comfort fic? bloom (you fill my lungs with sweetness, you fill my head with you) - akosmia (12K, T). i’ve read this again and again and i don’t plan on stopping. blind bestselling author ben solo needs a scribe. rey gets the job. there is cooking, there is domesticity, there are overwhelming emotions. my go-to.

as i’ve said before, akosmia (@kylorensx) is my all time favorite fanfic author. the fact that we are mutuals blows my mind daily. please please go read all of her stuff. you won’t regret it!

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?

First fandom I was IN...probably HTTYD when I was about 11. First fandom I posted content for was Guardians of the Galaxy, which I got into when I was 15 and started posting for the next year.

11. Who is your current OTP?

ZUTARA. Though I think the 24/7 onslaught of zutara art, meta, fanfic, and gifs that I’ve been posting since late May made that preeeeetty clear.

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

I have a few answers for this:

-“take what i took and give it back to you”: this was a Mantis-centric GOTG 5+1 I wrote two years ago that I felt really proud of because a) I’ve never been able to top the poetic lines in that fic and b) it was really near to my heart. I relate a lot to Mantis as a character and getting to explore that in ways that meshed with my own experiences made for a really special piece, at least to me. Nothing else I’ve posted has been quite so personal.

-“we’ll meet again”: the Damerey WWII epistolary AU. honestly, Damerey is that OTP that I’m no longer really sure why I went so hard for (although I must include this caveat: the community is WONDERFUL and I love them all), but this fic will ALWAYS be one of my favorites because I poured so many freakin’ hours of research into it and I was so proud to have created something that was historically accurate and (hopefully) swoonishly romantic at the same time.

-“the one my heart loves”: this was my Agents of Shield church camp AU, and okay, it was a hot mess, but it made me HAPPY. Not a lot of people read it, but i knew that would happen; I genuinely felt like I was writing just for me for the first time when I posted that. It made me happy without me needing to be validated for having written it and considering how much of a freaking validation gremlin I am, that’s absolutely bonkers.

-“stay frosty, royal milk tea”: it’s the cliche choice, I know. It’s my current work, I made a great friend through it (love you @sofileall!), and it’s the most popular thing I’ve ever written by a long shot. But how could I possibly count out my first taste of fandom fame, no matter how small it actually was? The feeling of knowing how many people were reading and liking our work was...indescribable for little validation gremlin me. And it’s a really fun story to write.

E: What character do you identify with most? Is there a certain fic of yours that captures these qualities particularly well?

C-3PO, I too am loud, over-talkative, anxious, like linguistics, and tend to bother people. Lol but for real? Ok, I know I’ve made this joke before, but minus the evil and the murder, I really do relate to Anakin in a way, like I’ve got this entire [post] on why I think he’s ADHD like I am, and his anxiety and general tendency to be a disaster socially resonates with me too, like, I get that. I’m also a massive drama queen who’s really smart about like one or two particular things so yea. I’d say overall tho, I’m probably the most like Luke, a little whiny and awkward, a little dramatic, little reckless, love my friends and family a LOT, want to explore. As to fics that capture similar qualities, I’d definitely say Pas de Deux, the way I write Anakin in it has a LOT of my anxiety and my worst headspace involved and wrapped up in his character, I very much projected a bit while writing it.

N: Any fic ideas brewing that you’d care to share?

Ohhhh honey you’ve got a storm coming…. besides the obvious other two books in walk the (family) line, I’ve got an entire list on a separate document of different stories I want to write, ideas including:

A oneshot fic I’m actually kinda working on right now. It’s another modern!AU Obikin romcom and I won’t spoil it, but it involves parkour, R2 the parrot, Obi Wan may or may not be James Bond, and Anakin accidentally becomes Twitter famous

An epistolary style fic set during Obi Wan’s time on Tatooine where nine year old Leia finds the emergency comm Bail has to contact him, and both the lonely, kind of awkward young princess and the tired old hermit who should know better but is also lonely and misses both of her parents dearly set up a penpal relationship. End goal is to establish a relationship that gives Leia a proper reason to name her son “Ben”.

A semi-crackfic where the Jedi Council gets some sort of Clue From The Force™ about the identity of the Secret Sith Lord, that clue being that the Sith Lord is: a politician with close ties to Anakin Skywalker, and also had very specific motives to send Darth Maul to Naboo. Alllll the wrong conclusions are drawn from that, and the next day, Padmé Amidala is arrested for treason. Obi Wan is the only Council member who’s like “y’all she’s innocent, it’s clearly the fucking Chancellor”, Sidious tries to manipulate the situation to remove the only two people in his way at once, and poor Anakin spends the entire fic in a state of “UH HI YEAH WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON” Shenanigans ensue

A 5+1 times they kissed Obikin alternate canon shortfic, because I’m hopeless and want to write shmoop.

A Sadmé (Satine/Padme) Ocean’s 8 AU that came about entirely over me yelling over Cate Blanchett and wanting to write a heist fic starring all of the SW Prequels/TCW ladies being total badasses

This absolutely BONKERS Rebels AU fic where S4 Ezra accidentally pulls both Ahsoka AND Kanan into the World Between Worlds during the Vader fight in S2. Vader recognizes what happened and promptly kidnaps S2 Ezra who’s there by himself— as well as Maul who’s established a bond with Ezra over the Sith holocron —in hopes of discovering the secret of time travel. While S2 Ezra has to somehow survive the Crazy Murder Roadtrip with Maul and Vader, now S4 Ezra, Kanan, and Ahsoka have to race to A: Find and rescue S2 Ezra before one of the Sith kill him— and therefore also kill S4 Ezra, B: Make sure Maul and Vader’s tentative alliance doesn’t lead to them finding Obi Wan for obvious reasons, and C: Make sure neither Maul nor especially Vader find the Lothal Temple World Between Worlds entrance and risk unleashing either into a past they both desperately want to change

A fic detailing different little neuroses and traits and attitudes passed down through the Yoda-Dooku-Jinn-Kenobi-Skywalker-Tano line.

Cross generational shortfic focusing on the desert children— Anakin, Luke, and Rey — and their first experiences with water and rain

A ficlet where Yoda somehow gets babified and basically just all of the Jedi Order having to deal with the cuteness overload that is Baby Yoda.

A post-TROS political drama where Leia’s Force Ghost realizes that once again, a new government is gonna need to be built in the aftermath of the First Order’s nonsense and that there are almost no good remaining politicians in the galaxy. Finn is unfortunate enough to know how command works, how to take charge, how to deal with FO remnants, and is Force Sensitive enough to see ghosts, so Leia takes it upon herself to mold Finn into the next leader of the GFFA. Would focus on rebuilding, family legacy, be very very Jedistormpilot, and so on. I feel like I’m not really invested enough in the ST but I reeeeally want to see this idea in fic form, so I might end up giving this idea away at some point.

This one fic that’s been going through my head for YEARS but have always felt scared of actually writing because I know right now that it’s gonna get LONG, like over 200k (lol and look what’s happening with Mutuals ahahAHAHA—) where Anakin flat out dies. Just, during TCW season 5, he fights Dooku and in the process of killing him, goes down with him and dies. Padmé will have just became about a month pregnant at this time, and part of the fic will focus on her and Obi Wan and Ahsoka dealing with the aftermath of Anakin’s death, as Sidious is forced to jumpstart his plans and execute Order 66 early now that he’s not waiting on Anakin anymore. The other part of the fic will focus on Anakin’s ghost, unable to communicate with Obi Wan or Ahsoka and having to watch them and Padmé and the surviving Jedi form the Rebellion themselves and his children being born and growing up without him, even though Luke and Leia will end up being the only ones who can see him. It’ll go right up through the 20 years of the Empire and have a gigantic cast and I just don’t know if I can do it.

Now, I hate to say it, but I need to let it be known that these are still MY IDEAS, and I have not given anyone permission to use them, so please do not be that person. Do not steal these ideas for yourself. I will be VERY upset if someone does. If you really like an idea, DM me and ask, but I don’t plan to give any of them away at the moment.

W: What is your favorite pairing to write? Favorite pairing to read?

Hmm, to write? That’s tough! There’s so many different complex relationships in Star Wars that I’ve really found myself enjoying exploring, and it’s hard to find a particular one that I like best. I’m open to at least sampling most pairings for reading, but my favorite has to be Obikin. It just makes me happy!!!!! :D

This one’s long, so I’m gonna throw a part of it under a cut! :)

3. what motivates you?

Hm...you know, it’s hard to say. A part of it is definitely feedback from readers (thank you!!!!), but it’s also me wanting to see characters in different situations and realizing that if no one else is gonna write those specific things I want to see, I’ve gotta do it myself.

It’s also wanting to express that creative/emotional part of myself, to put things out there that I wouldn’t ever be able to say out loud.

So yeah, I guess there are a few things? It’s difficult to say.

4. what time of the day/night do you like to write?

Since I’m working now, it’s usually evenings (which is still difficult because my family wants to do stuff after I’m done with work, and also I’m usually too tired to write), or weekends (which works out a lot better, usually).

5. do you write scenes in a linear fashion or do you write future scenes/dialogues sometimes?

I try to stay linear because if I choose to change something and there’s a future scene that’s already written that would contradict, then I’ll have to jump around and fix things, and that just seems really complicated xD

6. hardest/easiest character to write for?

7. hardest/easiest verse to write for?

Oh, Journey of the Lights for sure. Shifting Shadows is giving me a bit of a hard time (which is honestly my own fault, I keep making things more and more complicated), but there’s still a lot to explore. And I’m also just really excited for what’s coming in that verse - things are gonna get super wonky :)

21. this character’s best/worst memory? (Mace Windu)

Mace Windu’s best memory is seeing Depa Knighted. He’d never openly admit exactly how much he cares about her (even though he’d never admit it to anyone).

In a similar vein, his worst memory is when Depa was injured by Grievous and was in a coma. He didn’t know if she’d wake up, or even if she did, if she would ever be the same way she was before. There was so much uncertainty, so many shatterpoints that he did not understand how it was all going to resolve.

22. favorite line/quote/inner monologue from this character? (Shaak Ti)

“You are where you need to be. Solve your problems as a whole, not as individuals.”

I love this because it emphasizes how important it is for people to come together to solve a problem. That’s something that can be applied in real, everyday life.

23. feelings on epistolary fic?

So I wrote a grand total of one epistolary thing, which was for a school assignment. It was amazing because it was a group project, and basically each person had to write their own section. And of course, my part was the very last part of the overall story, and I had to deliver a massive emotional gut-punch (and of course, I did the thing and made my teacher cry reading it, so.....)

I would love to write epistolary fic one day, just because that would be so interesting to explore! It would also be a very interesting challenge to explore a character in that way. Hm.....

34. a scene/paragraph you wrote that you’re proud of

I already answered this here, but here’s another one from Memory:

Silence passed over them again, until Obi-Wan let out a long breath and smiled gently. Ahsoka wished that Anakin was here, that he could break the silence or just…do something. She didn’t know what she was supposed to say or do to make things right.

“I’m sorry that he died,” Ahsoka said softly.

“Me too,” her Grandmaster replied. “I sometimes wonder what Qui-Gon would say if he were here right now. I think—”

Obi-Wan cut himself off and frowned again before shaking his head.

“It doesn’t matter,” he said, more to himself. “It’s in the past.”

Then, before Ahsoka could reply, Obi-Wan left the room in a flurry of robes.

“It does matter,” she whispered to an empty room. Then, she reached over and turned on the projector and pressed the play button, causing the three figures to burst into rapid movement once again.

It’s just.....so happy :))) Also we get to explore the complicated things Obi-Wan’s feeling about Qui-Gon’s death, from the point of view of someone who wasn’t there when all of that happened, but definitely still cares about how Obi-Wan feels about it, especially so many years later.

It’s just so intriguing to explore all of that.

35. any foreshadowing/symbolism you wrote that you hope readers didn’t miss?

Okay wait but if I actually answer this then it would give away what I’m foreshadowing??? Unless you mean something in the past??? I guess I could answer this for symbolism, though. There’s symbolism in the maidenhair fern from Of Progress and Promises. And I think readers were able to see that, especially since Obi-Wan spells it out in the fic :)

43. emoji this character uses the most whilst texting? (Cody)

I think Cody would use the facepalm emoji 90% of the time, because he’s just So Tired of everyone being reckless and stupid.

49. this character’s starbucks order? (Sabé)

Sabé has so much to deal with, so she’d probably get a triple espresso shot every single time she walks into Starbucks, just to cope.

50. this character’s guilty pleasure? (Cad Bane)

Oh, it definitely has to be something really funny, like a specific kind of candy or ice cream that’s like really sweet and is typically marketed for really young children. Maybe bubblegum? I dunno.

I’d lean to choosing that, but it really does depend a lot & both can hover near to a squick for me.

angst or crack

I’ll take either, but crack-played-straight is one of my favourite things that fanfic does, and probably all my most popular stories are this, one way or another, although only some of them are actually humorous. (Miss Marple is a Goddess; Miss Marple beats Dracula; the Doctor keeps getting married by accident; the Doctor keeps marrying herself by accident etc. etc. Oh, and that comedy epistolary modern AU William/Harold Battle of Hastings fic.) I mean, I like my serious fic, but I just have to face that fact that when I finally leave fandom or die, they might as well write “Oh, so you’re the person who wrote that Miss Marple vs Dracula ficlet” on my fannish tombstone and have done with it.

Schedule Latin in addition to Greek back before starting undergrad

Order all textbooks used via the internet before starting school. (My textbooks cost $300 that first semester and $500 the next! Never made that mistake again. [The only reason I made that mistake twice was because I was dealing with the diagnosis of diabetes during that break.])

Fuck.See, in late middle school through late undergrad, I had latched onto this weird idea that thinking about sex was degrading (that you should have more self control) and that I was ace (despite, y’know, not being ace). I think that attitude screwed up a lot of my life, actually; having sex has numerous health benefits.Not that asexuality is somehow invalid, just that I was mistaken about myself to the point of denial/delusion.

||33: Top 3 things you’d buy if you gained three million dollars||

This one’s a question I’d want asked but which I’d struggle over because I don’t know the costs of some of the ideas I’ve had - from retirement to helping loved ones to helping random people. These sorts of questions (in my mind) are meant for what would you do apart from such things and more obvious ones (pay taxes, pay off debts, etc.). So...

Body hair removal and liposuction. The latter is in part for health (see earlier posts about blood pressure; I don’t buy the “fat is healthy!” claims when not only has medical science been pretty clear on the risks of being overweight, but I’ve experienced them). Both are about body image (and I just don’t like body hair - and haven’t since I was a small child).

Travel a bit. This is kinda weird, as I have this notion that land travel is something people without much money do - and I mainly intend on land travel, with perhaps some air/sea. (Those are pretty bad for the environment, though, and I don’t want to live like I’m a millionaire.)

Move out - probably to a nice apartment nearby, honestly. I don’t want the family house to get sold, so I’d buy that if my parents were thinking about leaving (or needed to go into a nursing home or some such), but I’ve got to be independent of them or I’m gong to kill myself.

I don’t actually have three fanfic recs: I’m not going to recommend any smut I’ve read and I’ve read too little non-smut to have a list. (I read very little fanfiction in general, smutty or not. Nothing against fics, just not usually my cuppa.) That said, the reason I brought this up is because the best fanfic I’ve read was really fucking good and I hear nothing about it ever, so want to spread it.

Problem: I don’t remember the name.

The whole thing except the conclusion is epistolary: Hermione has invented m-mail and Hogwarts uses it for everything. We find out that Harry has a fan club which, thanks to the siblings with the camera, has succeeded at getting some NSFW pictures of Harry (ones he did not consent to, but I don’t think involve him doing anything). Through various machinations, hilarious banter, sound discussion of personal boundaries for celebrities (male with mostly female fans, for once), and taunting Voldemort, Harry agrees to a “tasteful” nude photo shoot (with the since-graduated Oliver Wood) for the production of a calendar (proceeds of which will go to charity). If I recall correctly, Voldemort and some Death Eaters storm the quidditch pitch in the middle of the photo shoot (or else get horrendously embarrassed by something else going on there), ending in Voldemort humiliating himself in front of everyone.

It was really well written for what it was; I wish I could find it again.

fandoms: oh boy, there’s like a million but let’s say that recently Les Miserables (because I love being miserable ha and am reading the book in French and calling it ‘studying’) It (planning to reread the book before I see the movies though but still reading fic), All For the Game (because I’ve just reread the books for the 5th time and ascdfsc), Percy Jackson (because apparently writing about the son of Hades’ emo phase is all I need to be happy) Harry Potter (because Harry Potter is a constant thing in my head whether I want to or not, like one time I literally explained a whole dramatic friendship evolution to my dad by saying ‘I thought they were a Hufflepuff but actually, they’re a Slytherin’ but I’m only in the fandom for the fandom cause like the source material is...... well) Hannibal (rewatching for the third time with my younger brother cause he said he wouldn’t be scared of all the organs and is so far keeping his word, oh corrupting youth... will I go to hell?) and A Series of Unfortunate Events (kind of, not really talking about it online but I would die for this show). tropes: okay, I love love love hate to love more than anything but there might be a trope I love the most of them all, only I don’t know if you can call it a trope and it’s a very specific thing. It’s this carefree sarcastic character that is slowly releaved to have depths BUT hear me out I don’t mean the cliche bad boy sob story ohhh someone hurt me and now I wear a leather jacket and flirt with people and stare attractively out the window, I mean this more specific scenario when someone kind of doesn’t care because they once cared too much and it’s why I am so obsessed with Les Mis because it’s so Grantaire. Like give me a story about an overexcited child-genius who grows up sad and barely passes the year and gets drunk and I’m just a puddle. I don’t know what about it speaks to me so much but it’s my absolute favorite. Also, found family, always. And not romantic, but hate to friendship is awesome, too. and all those cop/criminal aus, I need them ok

share a bit of a wip: oh boy......... all I have is like two sentences of a never finished Gilmore Girls fic about Lorelei drinking wine and wanting an inn and a piece of a Drarry story that I temporarily dropped because I liked the concept and decided to use it for a whole novel about lesbians and Paganini instead oops. I really just write one shots the day I post them and I’m not posting a one shot today so... But I guess here’s Drarry with Draco remembering Harry speaking up for him and Narcissa during the trials:

He looked confident, Harry, and he wore grief like something freshly-washed and pressed. He kept his chin up, and his glasses weren’t held together by tape. He was immaculate, even his hair somehow combed into a semblance of tidiness, and Draco imagined it must have taken hours to get it to behave, couldn’t imagine why Harry would bother. By then people would oh and ah whenever he entered the room, no matter the tea stains, no matter the stubble, no matter the falling-apart sneakers, and then this: crispness like Harry was a dollar bill straight out of print, even though he wouldn’t lose anything otherwise, anyway, even though people would love him, unconditional.

It wouldn’t occur to him for months that Harry might have made himself presentable for their sake, that he might have put all the thoughts of countless deaths inside his pocket for a little while to make sure that people would listen as he explained that Narcissa was a mother, and not a bad person, as if the two were mutually exclusive.

He said, after clearing his throat, and to the whole room, his voice echoing, we’re not all good. He said, after a significant pause, and they’re not all bad.

Draco hated him for how he was ‘them’ and he felt c and r and u and c again and i and then o align on his tongue, letters he would voice or swallow, it could go either way.

Once, he crucio-ed himself, writhing in the ground and begging something for forgiveness through the pain, some old gods who must have raised their eyebrows as they watched, or maybe they didn’t bother watching at all.

No wand for a year was the verdict, and Draco didn’t mind because he didn’t want the wand.

What he wanted was the piano.

I have pieces of aftg and Stranger Things fics in my head but not written down yet. Wow this was unnecessarily long and rambly, I’m sorry :,) Not tagging anyone because my brain is scrambled and I can’t think but if you’re writing fic and this looks fun then I’d love to read yours! <3

first of all that first chapter owns my ass. “indulge me if you will i need you as a witness”?? that’s the most. that’s the absolute most. that said, the concept that they Grew Apart after our man bashir, while ... certainly canon compliant.... is a piece of canon i refuse to accept. i have my own canon timeline for these kinds of things

i fucking LOVE pythas lok? i lived for that relationship. in fact the fact that this book is just garak cycling through his exes and the way they were all instrumental to events unfolding on cardassia? in fact i begin now to suspect that gul dukat is the only cardassian from garak’s past whom garak hasn’t fucked AND isn’t related to

i whooped victoriously when garak said he was attracted to pythas. small victories. and then again when garak criticized odo’s uniform.

love that the bamarren parts of the book that don’t involve palandine read like some kind of fucking... edwardian all boys school shit. like am i reading an a.e. housman poem? am i rewatching maurice (1987) dir. james ivory? no i am reading a beta canon epistolary novel about a gay lizard

on that note garak being genuinely into women is something ajr and i disagree on but that’s just like to each his own

garak’s famed volcano dick made me laugh. this book is such a fanfic at times. and then palandine teaches him that IT’S ALL TRUE, ESPECIALLY THE LIES. in fact like ... i didn’t even consider this now but in the garak/palandine stuff at bamarren reads in certain cases like early seasons garashir? but we’ll get to the more concrete parts of alla that later

anyway .... “but i’m also a doctor, garak. and i know which group of people suffers the most. i really won’t take up any more of your time.” he extended his hand, which he rarely did, and i took it. “thank you for the tea.” he turned and went out the door. i stood there for a long moment, deeply upset. i felt trapped within myself, knowing what i had to do to get out but unable even to begin. yes, doctor, it does sound familiar.” WHAT THE FUCK WAS THIS!! (what the fuck was that whole scene!!!)

SPEAKING of doctors, dr parmak is really something. sorry i know a lot of you love him but i hope you realize he’s a rebound of a mighty order. self care is dating an older lizard flavored carbon copy of your ex bf.

this was like finding out that in ds9 beta canon ro laren becomes SECURITY OFFICER and dates QUARK is a similar experience to this. ro laren and kelas parmak: the only thing they have in common is being quark and garak’s doctor and security officer rebounds.

that said ro is her own person! parmak is a fig leaf. a plot device. andrew robinson winking at you from seventeen years ago. a mirror. god!

anyway then two of garak’s three school crushes hook up, and he’s left with pythas who is the best one anyway.

and there’s the fucking insane sequence where garak goes on lots of hikes with a Privileged Federation Twink whom he’s totally dtf as his first spy mission. and at one point, even though garak does hate his guts along with being dtf he thinks he’s “so concerned, so caring. i took another long breath. [...] i looked hans in the eyes and resisted being swallowed by their immeasurable blue depths.” like i’m not saying garak has a type but garak has a type!

i forgot about this but aside from pythas and that bitchy cousin of lukar, among garak’s classmates turn out to be the asshole from the casablanca episode and a relative of tekeny ghemor. it’s some 19th century lit bullshit and i LOVED it! as if this weren’t enough, there are four lights guy is also in this.

we also briefly meet remara, a totally deadly ex gf of kira’s. idk what garak was trying to do with their relationship but i’m totally interested in fanfic about remara being an asshole ex gf of kira’s.

garak’s battles of conscience are great. again very 19th c . i love how miserable he is throughout this book.

OH AND THEN HE AND PYTHAS LIVE IN THE WOODS FOR A MONTH OR SO AND FEEL LIKE.. COMFORTABLE FOR ONCE IN THEIR LIVES... AND PROBABLY HAVE SEX!

ooh and then we get a rlly spooky sequence where we see the wire IN ACTION

the assassin cover professions we’ve seen in this book and in this show are either Lesbian Professions (gardeners, park rangers) or Gay Professions (the fashion industry). what is it with covert operations and the lgbt community.

i SCREAMED about chapter 19 earlier today. but just to go over it once more

garak has a spooky dream about julian burying him alive ! so he hits him up at six in the fucking morning

“doctor forgive me but i need to see you,” i said as calmly as i could. “garak?” “i do apologize but it’s important.”

and then garak hears “another voice in the background. ezri dax. a muffled conversation. the doctor cleared his throat again. “i’ll be right over” he said.” I LOVE THAT EZRI AND JULIAN AREN’T EVEN FUCKING AT THIS POINT BUT AJR COULDN’T RESIST HIGHLIGHTING THE RIVALRY BETWEEN THEM?!

and then julian said “there are more things in heaven and earth horatio than are dreamt of in your philosophy” and i died on the spot. they’re IN LOVE?! ajr i thought you wrote garashir as unrequited but what kind of man quotes hamlet talking 2 horatio at his platonic dude friend while he’s run over to his quarters in the middle of the night after said platonic dudefriend has a nightmare?

“i was also convinced that it was all a dream, and i kept asking myself what you were doing there” like what the actual fuck? anyway they talk the wire and it’s a lot. and of course “you not only saved my life you made it possible for me to live it.”

AND THEN OF COURSE “this is my last trip to cardassia. i’m not returning. you were in the dream for a very specific reason. once again, you helped me remember. thank you, julian.” JULIAN! JULIAN!! i’m DYING OF CARDIAC ARREST! (also this scene finally solidified my headcanons for when they break up for the second time.)

anyway then the palandine shit goes down and garak kills his OTHER old school crush (the one that turned out to be a dick)

one of my notes on here, verbatim: “have garak and quark had sex” i asked myself and then immediately wanted to die

the second time garak said that kelas parmak was “so much like you, doctor” i damn near screamed in frustration. don’t try me like this elim!!

and then we get the last julian mirror who’s that sad federation woman who spills her soul to elim and the line “CAREFUL, ELIM. YOU KNOW PERFECTLY WELL THAT THE SUREST WAY TO YOUR HEART IS THROUGH CONVERSATION”

okay and THEN he meets pythas who’s been Permanently Marked By The Horrors Of War and he’s got a gf who saved his life even though he didn’t want to be saved at first.... so like pythas is special because he’s a garak mirror AND a garak boyfriend at the same time!

and pythas was in the grounds trying to warn garak before all the shit went down with palandine. i’m dying scoob

the fact that the epilogue starts with the line “it’s just garak. plain simple garak.” the flashback timeline ends at the point garak meets julian! i hate this it’s so fucking romantic

and then YOU’RE ALWAYS WELCOME DOCTOR..... like idk about the canon status of a lot of these things but i totally buy this novel as a thing that exists that garak sent. which of course is a great jumping off point for post canon cardassia fic. justice is so sweet.

Dear Yuletide Author,

EDIT: I am not able to participate in Yuletide this year--I had to forfeit in 2016 due to being unexpectedly hospitalized in Nov/Dec after poorly managing my time, and misreading the rules--I thought the ban could be cleared by submitting a treat OR waiting a year, turns out I have to complete a finished story to be cleared, which I will this year.

All that said, I spent quite a bit of time on this and since I could manage to pinch hint and get to make my requests I’m going to leave my DYW letter here. If anyone feels like writing to these prompts, feel free. I’ll probably reuse them last year, depending on what is written for other people, but I already have plans to nominate a few newer fandoms next year.

Hi! I’m incredibly excited about Yuletide this year, and I’ve been considering my requests and offers with more thought than I should be willing to admit to this week. There are so many fandoms that I love nominated, and though I’ve learned to be careful about what I offer to write for, I’ve still found myself making detailed mentao pro-con lists, especially since I try not to request fic from the same fandoms I offer to write in. Still, I’ve been surprised by some of the nominations—I only finished The Lonliest Girl in the Universe a week ago, and Lauren James isn’t well-known in the States, despite being one of my favorite authors. Anyway, I think I’ve got my lists figured out now, so the time has come to tell you what it is I love about my favorite pieces of underappreciated media. What an easy project /sarcasm.

DISLIKES Before I get into the fandoms individually, I suppose I should let you know what my squicks are (you know you’ve been in fandom too long when you’re shocked Word doesn’t recognize the word ‘squicks.) None of these are triggers in particular, I’ve got depression, but it’s managed, and I don’t have any major traumas to worry about in particular. I don’t mine NSFW/explicit fic, but it’s also not often my reason for reading. That said, the following tags make me likely to hit the back button: watersports, alpha/omega, knotting, feces, mpreg. I’m not particularly fond of girl!penis as a kink, though it’s different if the character is actually dealing with being trans or intersex.

LIKES One thing I do like that a lot of people don’t is bloodplay, though as there aren’t any vampire stories in my requests it probably won’t be a Thing this year, and I’m good with consensual BDSM.

I’m sure it’s obvious from my reqs that I’m into zombie fiction, though it’s the human side of it I like, whether that’s humans dealing with zombies, or zombies attempting to deal with their humanity. One thing I will say is that I’ve chosen fandoms that all rest on detailed world-building, and if you want to write a fic that explores the edges of these universes without necessarily including the listed characters, I’m happy with that. Anything that explores how the world has changed/how a certain person has been affected by the big change is fine with me!

I’m bi, with a deeply abiding love for f/f fic. I definitely have het ships that I’ll fill you in on, but I still love stories where those ladies interact with their female friends. I’m very pro kid!fic, I adore time stamps, alternate POVs, epistolary fic, social media fic, anything that explores the world that an author has already built. I wasn’t ever the kid simply rubbing their Barbies together, I acted out Barbie and Ken meeting while they babysat Kelly and Tommy. (True story: these stories were also written down in a notebook I carried around at school. Basically, I started writing Barbie fanfic at the age of eight.)

I’ve received some great Yuletide gifts via letters where I’ve spelled out specific desires, but this year I don’t have specific stories I want written so much as worlds I’d like to see explored further. What are they? Glad you asked, friend!

Newsflesh (Feed, Deadline, Blackout, Rise, & Feedback)

This isn’t the most obscure fandom in the world, by any means, since it’s written by Seanann McGuiare under her Mira Grant penname, and because Mark Oshiro of Mark Does Stuff chronicled his journey through the original trilogy. That said, I’m pretty obsessed with the world of these books, and have read and reread all the books and novellas, and I’m not as into the main ship as most readers seem to be. I’m adopted, so the relationship between Georgia and Shaun I don’t love incest in general, though a high school obsession with Life with Derek means I can’t cast stones. However, I nominated this fandom in the first place, and I picked the character pool especially so that even if I didn’t end up requesting it, other participants might take the chance to explore other characters, specifically the characters introduced in Feedback. Their story takes place parallel to Feed; while the Masons are covering the Ryman campaign, Aislinn North, the Irwin who adores chasing zombies, and her companions are on the election trail with Senator Shannon Kilbourne. I like Feedback due to the diversity of its cast—Mat, the teams’ techie and makeup blogger, is nonbinary, and Ash is married to Ben, the Newsie, on paper, but really in a relationship with the final member of their team, fiction-writer Audrey). But another feature I love about this book? Unlike the original trilogy, it was written after the date when Grant sets the Rising—July 2014. Because of this, the book contains some amazing pop cultural nuggets that just make the whole thing seem more real, for instance Ash mentions that Frozen merchandise is a rarity, since the Rising happened mid-PR campaign, and Taylor Swift’s pre-2013 music is “before she turned political.” (If only. Tay and JLaw disappointed me last year.) Like I said, I’m not married to you using these characters. Heck, if you want to explore Taylor Swift’s life, post-Rising, that’d be cool with me. That said, I chose Ash, Emily Ryman, Maggie, and Georgia because they are awesome female characters, and I’d love to see them interact. I can see Ash and Maggie having known each other/dated at some point—though post-canon I am pro-Maggie/Alaric, though less crazy about Ash’s girlfriend—and any situation where they could meet would make a great fic, especially if both Georgia and Ash have to deal with their prejudices towards each other. Also, in regards to Maggie, I wouldn’t mind knowing more about Alisa, Alaric’s sister, especially because the Masons take her in from a shelter in Ferry Pass, which is part of my hometown of Pensacola. Emily is painfully underused, being born pre-Rising and developing retinal KA, and all of them are just badasses. Basically, this world is awesome and I think more people need to be exposed to Feedback, and it’s Irish spitfire of a POV-Irwin. Another feature of this universe I’m interested in is the kids who grow up post-Rising. Grant looks into this with blog posts and flashbacks, but even the description of the post-Rising orphanages in the “All the Pretty Little Horses” short story from Rise makes me want more.

Parasitology Parasite, Symbiont, Chimera

Another Mira Grant, another apocalypse. People have accused her of revamping the same story again, but in spite of having some similar characters and circumstances Sal’s story is nothing like Georgia or Ash’s. Of course, I adore the similarities in story-telling—ephemera is my kryptonite—but Sal’s development is unique to Mira Grant books, if not to books in general, and her relationship to her own humanity/lack thereof is fascinating. I especially love that she spends the whole series in a committed relationship, one that she is confident of, and that in spite of only technically having existed for six years she is incredibly sure of herself. I nominated this one as well, and chose Sal, Juniper, Doctor Cale, and Tansy because they are strong ladies with complex stories that have lots of room to be explored. Dr. Cale, Tansy, and Sal to a degree, deal with disability—and this is particular interesting for Tansy & Sal, since they are aware of the fact that they are making a choice to keep this malfunctioning human body. Juniper is a little girl, yet she and Tansy are learning to be people together, Sal is learning to be a mother, and in a way so is Dr. Cale. Also, eventually Juniper will have to decide whether or not to engage with the humans of her generation, and that could be fascinating. That said, Grant hasn’t told nearly as many stories in this universe, since the trilogy relies far more on Sal herself than Newsflesh relies on the Masons, so I’d love to see an exploration of how the parasites and chimeras affected other parts of the world. I think the fact that the symbiotes have brought humanity so close to eradicating illness is something that could be explored further, too, especially when you consider that the parasites disabled their inventor, and that if the Mitchells hadn’t been attempting to hide Sally’s epilepsy, Sal might not have been born. There’s also the fact that the other doctor who is close to Sal—Cale’s son, Nathan—does not use the implants at all, suggesting that at their core physicians with their hearts in the right place know that there is a line that shouldn’t be crossed, that maybe humans need illness and disability to thrive.

In the Flesh

I really debated requesting this, since it’s a fandom I think I could write in, but I liked the idea of letting my requests adhere to a theme, and this series was the first piece of zombie media I ever consumed (pun intended). There have been many great fics in this fandom, they are often AU and revolve around Kieren’s relationships—I’m all for people celebrating canonically queer characters, but to me neither of those ships were what drew me into the series. I didn’t nominate ItF myself, and I wish I had because I would have included Amy Dyer. As it is, I don’t mind if you mention either of Kieren’s relationships, but I only asked for Kieren and Jem because they’re the characters I care most about, truly. Honestly, I actually care the most about Jem, because I think she’s an incredible character who went through so much to protect her family and is forced to face her fears every day in order to have a relationship with the brother who made her who she is—in so many ways. I am also fascinated by the idea of a world that has faced the apocalypse and is having to move forward. The little details that serve to remind us that society had to hit the pause button, such as the lack of cell phones, are really intriguing to me, as well as the issues students like Jem face having to return to school after war. This world also opens the door for an exploration of what life might be like for children&teens who came back—Henry was a missed opportunity IMO—and while I don’t mind if you don’t bother incorporating the storylines Dominic Mitchell has said he would include in a season three, the idea of Jem making a friend with PDS (as opposed to PTSD, that acronym similarity needs mentioning) would be so great. Again, though, feel free to take this world and run with it, no need to stay in Roarton—I wonder what adulthood for Jem would be like, with Kieren never having aged, for instance?

World War Z

Another of my nominations. I don’t know why, but I am obsessed with this book, specifically the audiobook. Max Brooks has talked about how he based this book on an oral history of WWII, and I think the parallels between the two wars are deep if you look closely—the idea of total war, the amount of work on the home-front, the inefficiency of assuming what won against one enemy will suffice against another, children escaping unimaginable violence, the nuclear bomb survivor, so much more—but what I really loved is how Brooks really fills in the details from each POV he uses. Without naming celebrities, Brooks clearly sets it in the Bush-era, which is interesting to me but probably not affect fic, but shows how well the world is crafted. The imagery that comes from the Australian astronaut who spent the war on the ISS is particularly poignant to me, especially the way he describes them discovering the burrowing zombies. I also get chills from Jessica’s story, the girl whose parents dragged her up to Canada, and when she discovers the Spongebob sleepover, because it’s a mark of how bizarre our culture and entertainment would seem, and how our comforts could disappear in the blink of an eye. I do think that this book is lacking in female POVs, particular ladies who might not be soldiers but were fighting the war in their own way. I loved Joe Mohammad’s POV, too, but not everyone would need to be part of a patrol group or militia to survive. I’d love to see what the situation was like for city-dwellers, or people who were in the areas not getting supplies due to the Reddecker plan. What about the Israelis, what was it like in the country during this isolated period? There have been some great fics exploring issues like euthanasia and abortion in that period, and I’d love to see an issue like that expanded. On the other hand, there is a lot that could come from looking into the world post-war, describing what the Narrator goes through to get these stories, or what kinds of stories he might hear after the initial book is published—a history of the rebuilding would be interesting since in this world the threat isn’t completely gone. Brooks has written two short stories that are explicitly in this world (a couple that are borderline) and one of them, Closure LtD, and I don’t want to spoil it, but it really makes me wonder what other kinds of industries would emerge in a post-zombie war world.

Inhuman Condition

Also my nomination, this is a webseries that did not get NEARLY the amount of viewers or fans it deserved. The author has created this incredibly interesting alternative history, and I don’t think everyone who watched even knows how much detail was put into it. For instance, I discovered a blog (https://angrydeadgirl.wordpress.com) written from the POV of Clara—my favorite character—wherein she analyzes TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, except it’s Grey’s Anatomy reimagined through the lens of this world, and there is NOTHING I love more than inter-textual references like that. There are other in-universe shows that I have honestly begged to see for real, and via the show we only get a taste of these details. I’d also love to know more about how the existence of zombies and lycans affected history aside from the terror attacks we know of from the series. I’d also love to see more about Kessler, what got her into working with other-humans, whether there is a personal connection that we’re not told, more about her daughter, Mira, who has grown up in a world where the truth is known, there’s so much in there to mine. I didn’t nominate Tamar, the character who seems more superhero than supernatural, because to me her story seems to fit into this world less than Clara and Linc. Not that I don’t like her, I did, but while I totally believe they could all exist in one universe—I read Marvel, after all—her condition doesn’t seem to be in the same category, so the backstory would be different. Lycanthropy and Clara’s form of zombiism both seem to be medical conditions, to a degree, and while Tamar’s issues definitely parallel mental illness, it’s a different issue. I wouldn’t mind seeing her or others like her, just that I think the dynamics of lycan/walker-type conditions. I really appreciate how, like In the Flesh, this series allows the conditions to be a metaphor for real life issues, without erasing those issues. One of Clara’s blog entries, for instance, mentions that there are cases of people being killed for not informing sexual partners of their condition, and this is explicitly related to people with HIV who have faced similar violence. Also, Linc and Kessler are both explicitly bisexual, and in my mind Clara is non-straight, too, and that’s a reason I included Mira because WHY NOT? I nominated Frank because after seeing a fic that shipped him and Clara I got interested in what it would be like to have to spend all your time with this vibrant girl who is so afraid of becoming a monster, I don’t ship them necessarily, but I am interested in knowing more about him. This is the one fandom where I am kind of tied to having the canon characters front and center, but if you want to explore this world through a different lens, I’m open to it.

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe

I really, really thought about using this slot for iZombie, because it’s one of my favorite things and fits the theme, but I read The Loneliest Girl in the Universe a few weeks ago, and am THRILLED with the idea of finding other people who love it. I also considered offering to write for it, but I do not have confidence in my ability to calculate transmission delays or describe space physics. I mean, it’s basically a YA version of The Martian featuring an MC with anxiety who writes fanfic. WHAT MORE DO ANY OF US WANT? Throughout this book I was terrified that J would turn out to be an AI, but his actual backstory basically broke my heart, as did the reveal of Romy’s history. I really wish her mother had survived, and I would like to see more of her in Romy’s memories or maybe in the logs/archives now that Romy might be open to looking into them. I would love to see her asking Molly about them, or reading/watching her parents’ reports or journals as she builds a new world with Issac. I also want to know about Issac Evans. Who is he? What happened with him and J? Will he and Romy be MFEO, or simply besties who raise babies? What are the other adults on the ship like? Does Romy find a different person to love? Is it a girl? I’d also LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Romy’s life from the POV of an Earth dweller. You see, DYW, I am a huge fan of several family vlogs; there are babies I have watched grow up via the internet, and I am DEEPLY invested in their lives. NASA would be crazy not to have gotten the world to rally around baby Romy, and some of them probably still read her fics. That’s the thing, though, this book includes her fic, and imaging fic from 2067 makes me want to see more of their social media, and to know how it affected this next group of astronauts. Also, since it turns out that J lied about the war and the collapse of the world’s governments, I’d love to see what the world is actually like. What else is NASA doing? Does the entire world freak out when they find out what happened with Romy and J, or only Molly? Who is Molly? Did she suspect J based on how well she knows Romy? I have a need to know.

That is it, oh Yuletide Author, way too many of my thoughts about Alternate Worlds, most of them infested by the undead. As I’ve said, I would be happy with stories that feature the characters I requested, or that don’t at all, but unless mentioned I’m not crazy about canon-alternatives.

As I was lying on my bed trying to think of something to do I was struck with an idea. I’ve become fond of epistolary fanfics ever since I’ve read the one from the Kingsman fandom featuring the pairing of Harry Hart and Eggsy Unwin (or Hartwin if you prefer the shipping name).

Is it correct if Texting or Chatting AUs are considered as one? I think they are if were purely basing it on the exchange of messages, letters?

But yeah, you could say that I have a fondness for such AUs too. So it wouldn’t have been a surprise if I suddenly had a desire to read one for the Voltron fandom featuring Sheith. The idea was probably inspired by the fic I was currently reading for Sheith which was written by captainhurricane titled “Text me, maybe”. (I recommend you give it a check.) And I was stuck in this state of wanting to read more but that was the last update, so I can’t and I need to wait for the next update which I have no idea when.

So as I lay there, I found myself saying, “I need an epistolary fic for Sheith.” And it snowballed from there.

I wanted to read a fic where Shiro and Keith are in love with each other before the Kerberos mission but haven’t said anything to each other yet. And though that was the case, they knew the other felt the same way they did for them. So here’s Shiro flying to Kerberos writing letters to Keith every day, about how much he misses him, how much he wished he was there with him, how the stars and planets and every little thing he unexpectedly sees reminds him so much of Keith. He writes letters containing things he wish he’d said to Keith but never had the courage to. Things he wished he had said before he left for the Kerberos mission. He tells stories of what happens in the ship, of how Matt would babble about his little sister Katie and Mr. Holt’s little lectures about Kerberos and other things they’ve discovered. And he plans to give these letters to Keith when he gets back, but he never gets to because they’re captured by the Galra.

But Shiro doesn’t stop. Albeit lacking in paper and pen, as he sits in his cell, waiting for whatever the Galra had in mind for him – an interrogation, a new battle, a few hours on the rack – he continues writing imagined letters to Keith. How he’s the one thing keeping him going. How he wants to get back to him. How scared he is every match. How sometimes he can’t tell what’s real anymore. How he knows Keith would say the right words even if Keith thinks they’re not. How Keith would do what Shiro knows would make him feel better.

Or it could be Keith who’s writing the letters to Shiro. Of how much the Garrison isn’t the same without him. How sometimes Keith could hear Shiro’s voice giving him advices on how to handle a situation. Of little stories about this cargo pilot that’s giving him these ridiculous looks, of the awful food in the cafeteria and how much he missed Shiro’s simple cooked meals. Of Shiro’s parents sending him little souvenirs they got when they visited Japan. Of Shiro’s promise that he’d take him one time for Hanami. Of how much he wished Shiro would come back sooner.

And then he writes a letter asking him if it was true. Of what he saw in the cafeteria TV, of their ship crashing and that he and the Holts are gone. Keith writes about how stupid the Garrison was. That it was impossible that it was a “pilot error” that caused it. How mad he was that they were blaming it on Shiro. That Shiro wouldn’t make such a mistake. How they won’t tell him anything. How its confidential information and he had no clearance. He writes how he left the Garrison. How he can’t stay in a place where Shiro isn’t there and with people who could easily use a person they’ve praised and known for years as a scapegoat and ruin him like that.

One night, when he’s drunk and his hold on his emotions unstable, Keith writes how cruel Shiro was. How he promised that he’d come back, how he’ll come home. How he’ll never go where Keith can’t follow. But there he goes doing it. Leaving him, disappearing on him. He writes how he never got to say what he wanted to. How he never let Shiro hear what’s been screaming in his heart from the beginning. But when he wakes up and reads what he’s written, he writes another letter saying he’s sorry. Sorry that he can’t seem to change what the Garrison had done to Shiro. Sorry that he didn’t know what to do. Sorry that he broke his promise that he’ll be good in the Garrison, that he’ll make Shiro proud. But he just couldn’t.

Keith lives in the shack now, and he keeps writing letters. Letters about how the shack looked the same but didn’t feel so without Shiro. Of how Shiro’s clothes were still in the drawers. Of how he finds himself staring at their photos pinned on the cork board. Of how he wished Shiro met his dad because he knows he’ll like him with their mutual love for space and the stars. He writes about the desert calling to him. About the cave with paintings about a lion. About some sort of coming. And he wonders if it was something that could bring Shiro back. Something that could help him look for Shiro out there because he knows he is. Keith feels it as clearly as the warmth of the sun on his skin.

And when they meet again, when they finally see each other again. They don’t know what to say. Of the millions of words they’d written (or thought of), not a single one make it out of their mouths. The words are stuck in their throats because they can’t stop looking at each other.

Can’t believe that he’s actually right in front of him. That he made it out and he can be with Keith. That he can have Keith.

That’s Shiro’s here. That Shiro’s alive and he’s found him. That he hasn’t broken his promise and Shiro’s come back to him.

And it’s harder than they thought it would be, to say the words they wanted to say.

Shiro decided to just write them. It took days to finish. Of writing and re-writing, there’s a pile of crumpled papers scattered in his room’s floor to prove it. And when he finally gives it to Keith, he tells him to read it alone and come find him when he’s ready.

Keith took a few days contemplating but realized that he’s waited this long, the letters wouldn’t read themselves. So one afternoon (or what it would pass as one in space), he takes the box he’s brought with him from Earth and shoves it in Shiro’s arms telling him to read it and runs away, head bowed to hide his reddening face.

And when the letter(s) was read, the addressee returned it to the writer. And at the bottom of it is a reply. Words that the writer had always wanted to know or hear the addressee say. Something Keith or Shiro had always wanted to say to the other before Kerberos.
