Kyle Rayner x Batsis One-Shot

Author's Note: Hi I finished this! Enjoy! -Thorne
**********************************************************************
Oddly enough, she didn’t make Kyle do anything other than design the first month he was at Wayne Manor. And she was true to her word. He had an entire room to himself, and the room was as big as his whole apartment, bigger if he was honest; and that wasn’t all—he had every instrument an artist could ever want, even some of the newest drawing tablets and pens that hadn’t even come out yet. Limited edition first pick that only someone like her could get her hands on by merely flashing that pretty smile and her last name of “Wayne”. It was a graphic artists dream come alive, and Kyle was afraid that he was going to wake up from it that he never once tried to pinch himself to see if it was a dream or not.
Surprisingly enough though, (Y/N) was being awfully nice to him too. She’d taken him shopping a bunch of times, a whole new wardrobe and even thrown in a new phone and laptop. Of course, Kyle wasn’t a fool and immediately confronted her about using her purchases to hold it over him. That was the one instance in which she wasn’t awfully nice because she sucker-punched him and told him to never call her a manipulator ever again. That she had never once used a purchase to force someone into something—she was a bitch but she wasn’t that kind of bitch.
He even questioned Jason about it once they got back to the manor and his friend cackled at the nice shiner he’d received. (Y/N) doesn’t buy things for people to make them do what she wants. She buys things for people because that’s how she shows she’s fond of them. Honestly, if she buys you what you want, especially if you ask for it, that’s how you know she thinks you’re a friend of hers. Just let her spoil you for a while, Rayner. You’ll miss it when you have to go back to NYC.
Kyle relented then, instead of fighting her on paying for everything, he watched her. Watched her when he asked for something. Just for a split second she’d get a look of honest surprise in her eyes before that smirk crossed her lips and she’d toss it in the basket before picking up her own needs. He found it almost endearing, the way she acted, like she wasn’t expecting him to ask for anything. And Kyle especially liked that look in her eyes. It made his heart beat a little faster when she gazed at him with those big eyes.
And while he did love that look, it only lasted for one month. Hell had come to the manor, and Kyle was smack in the middle of it.
***
“Good morning family!” she greeted cheerfully, placing her hands on Kyle’s shoulders. She received various replies, some happy, some tired, and Kyle gave his own.
“Morning, (Y/N). You seem happy.” He cut into the buttery waffle and started bringing the fork to his mouth when she grabbed his hand and gently but firmly, took the utensil into her mouth. Kyle couldn’t help but go slack jawed as she chewed and swallowed, offering him a smirk.
“I’m sorry,” she purred. “Did you want that?” His mouth opened and closed, and she pushed the plate forward, replacing it with a tall smoothie shaker that was a bright, sickly green.
“Uh…” he started, looking between the shaker and her. “What’s that?”
(Y/N) nodded at it. “That’s your breakfast for this morning.” She flipped the cap open. “It’s got spinach, kale, bananas, vanilla flavored protein powder, pineapple, mint leaves and spirulina.” She grinned. “It’s got all the protein and greens you need for the start of this wonderful day.”
“I don’t even know what spirulina is.” Kyle remarked.
“Blue-green algae super-food.” (Y/N) nodded at it. “From now on you’re going to drink smoothies every morning and then we’re going to weight train and run every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.”
Her family started snickering around the table and Kyle swallowed thickly daring to ask, “And Tuesdays and Thursdays?”
She grinned wickedly at him. “Combat, Rayner.” Handing him the shake, she quipped, “Drink up me hearties.”
“Yo ho.” Kyle whimpered when he sniffed it and gagged.
***
“C’mon weakling,” she nagged. “You’ve barely gotten through the second set. Don’t tell me you’re already tired.”
Kyle groaned as he pushed the weighted bar up, holding it for a second before letting it fall. “I told you I can bench press one-hundred. You put one-twenty on this bar,” he griped through gritted teeth.
(Y/N) smirked. “Feel that pain though? It’s weakness leaving your body.” She grabbed the bar with one hand, pulling it up and onto the hold; she grinned as Kyle panted, chest heaving up and down with every sharp intake of breath.
“I—don’t know—how you do this—everyday.” He gasped and she snorted.
“No pain, no gain, Rayner.” She walked around him, and Kyle was too weak to keep his eyes off her as she did. “Oh, I can’t wait for tomorrow,” she cooed, throwing a leg over his hips, lowering onto his thighs.
Kyle’s throat tightened and he gazed at her as she leaned forward, propping her elbows on his chest, staring into his eyes. “Pretty close there,” he panted and (Y/N) smiled.
“Closer the better in my opinion.” Her eyes narrowed bemusedly. “From here I can get a good view of your form.” She pulled away. “You’re using your lower back to push strength into your arms. This time, use your chest and shoulders. Deep breath when you push up, breathe out when you lower, okay?”
He nodded, grabbing the bar again. “What set now?”
“Three. Five reps.” (Y/N) pressed a hand to his abdomen. “Core muscles tight. Glutes tight. Keep the stability and use your upper body muscles alright?”
“Got it.” He said, pulling the bar off and she felt his pelvis start to push upwards and she splayed her fingers.
“Chest, Kyle. Not your hips.” He grunted, trying harder, and she put all her weight onto his hips, keeping them pressed down to the bench. It showed in his form as he improved almost instantaneously. “Nice job,” she murmured. “Keep going.”
He got to the fifth rep, starting to go up, when she purred, “Your arms are very strong, Kyle. I wonder just how strong.”
Something in her voice made his heart stutter and he forgot momentarily what he was doing. The bar shifted downwards, and he gasped as it came down at him; (Y/N) reached out, quick as lightning and grabbed it with both hands, standing from his legs to put the bar back.
She looked down at him, concern in her eyes. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” he breathed. “Sorry…lost my grip.” (Y/N) nodded and shimmied away, holding out a hand to him. “Thanks,” he said, letting her pull him up.
“Take five and go get some water, alright?”
He wanted to shake his head, tell her no, that he could keep going, but he thought against it and started for the water fountain in the corner. As he bent over, he happened to look back at her, seeing her bent over, stretching her legs. Heat pooled low in his gut, and he groaned, turning his eyes away.
“Jesus Christ,” he hissed. “Get a grip.”
“Let’s go, Rayner!” she called out behind him. “We’ve got two miles to run!”
Kyle let his head hand and he groaned again.
***
Compared to the day before, getting his ass kicked wasn’t as bad as it had seemed. That being said, (Y/N) wasn’t pulling her punches with him and he hadn’t managed to lay a single hit on her an hour in.
He gasped as she dropped him onto his back and he laid flat, gazing at the ceiling before him; she leaned over him, a cocky smirk on her face. “Need a break?”
“I’m not a novice in hand to hand. I trained with J’onn J’onnz for a while.” He countered with a glare and surprisingly, she nodded, rather impressed.
“I can tell in your form. You counter like he does.” (Y/N) bent down and gently swept away the sweaty hair from his forehead. “You’re learning pretty quick though, if I do say so myself.”
Kyle’s face lit up. “Really? You think—”
“But I can see that it takes you getting your ass handed to you over and over again before the lesson sinks in.”
His face pinched and he griped, “I should’ve seen that coming.”
(Y/N) snorted and patted his head, mocking, “You’re learning.” She smiled. “Now get up. You’ve rested long enough.”
“UGHHH!” he groaned, climbing to his feet.
***
On the third month and final month of the project, Kyle noticed a major improvement in himself. Not only had he lost a few of those extra pounds from snacking, toning all over his body, he’d also managed to expand his stamina a great deal. (Y/N) had congratulated him when he managed to run the various miles without even breaking a sweat.
The designs had come in well too, and Kyle honestly had more money than he knew what to do with. Well, rent and utilities were his most prominent factor, but even then, the money he’d have left over would last him a long time. He almost felt sad when they got to the final week of the project, no longer needing drawings, he was mostly there to make sure the designs were made correctly and with good materials.
(Y/N)’d even given him one of the first sets they produced and even if he was used to seeing his drawings published, it was another thing to see his name on the tag with it. It made him giddy, and he didn’t know how to rope that in with the continued nagging in the back of his brain. That it was all ending in a week. No more breakfast being made, no more laundry done, no more seeing his friends all the time and patrolling with them…and no more (Y/N) constantly.
When he thought about that, Kyle’s chest started to tighten, heart starting to hurt a lot more than he wanted to admit. And he knew why—somewhere along the lines of (Y/N)’s continual ass-kicking and training, he’d fallen in love with her. With her crude attitude and cocky smirks, her proud demeanor and skill, her beauty and the occasional kindness she showed to people, but most importantly, the love she showed for her family.
Most people saw an arrogant bitch who could school people six ways from Sunday both verbally and physically, but what they didn’t see, was the care she paid to those she loved most. To Dick’s anger issues, to Jason’s frequent regrets, to Tim’s consistent depression, to Cassandra’s ever-evolving education, to Damian’s rapid growth, to her father’s hurting soul—she cared so deeply for them, would give anything for them, even her life if it meant. And that made Kyle want to fall at her feet and worship her.
That this beautiful woman who allowed people to talk about her and never cared to correct, was the greatest woman alive, the most loving, the most caring. And she was hard, she was, but her love was tough and those that received it, her siblings and her closest friends, they knew she loved them completely. Kyle knew she cared for him. He only hoped that she wanted more.
***
The production party had been held in France and Kyle had never seen so many elites in one spot that he wasn’t sure how to even drink from his champagne chute correctly. Luckily, (Y/N) had stayed with him all night, tucking herself in his side and covering when he faltered in front of someone who didn’t speak English. And God, there was something very sexy about the way her lips moved when she spoke fluent French.
The party lasted well into the night and by the time they got back to the penthouse, he was dead on his feet. The siblings had dispersed to their rooms and (Y/N) stayed up a bit to speak with Alfred and Bruce over the phone. Kyle lingered around the kitchen with her and when she hung up, she sighed heavily, pulling out the dangling golden earrings and removing the chunky diamond necklace that probably costed more than Kyle did.
Her eyes met his and she smiled tiredly. “Did you have fun tonight?”
“I did,” he said happily. “It was…interesting to see what your life is like.” He chuckled. “Well, your day life that is.”
(Y/N) huffed a laugh and he wandered around the island, daring enough to reach up and grab her shoulders, digging his thumbs into her muscles. She groaned and hung her head a bit.
“Feel good?” he questioned, and she nodded.
“I don’t typically wear heels unless it’s for a party and I remember why.” Sighing, she pulled away from his arms and he just barely managed to keep the sadness from crossing his face as she turned. “What about you? Are you okay?”
Kyle shrugged. “Feel like I could sleep for a few days straight, but isn’t that how we all work?”
(Y/N) snorted, then sighed wistfully. “I almost don’t want this night to end.”
“How come?” he asked, and she met his gaze.
“I like seeing you flounder like a fish in front of socialites.” He rolled his eyes and she laughed, shoving him lightly. “I’m joking.” She rested her hand on his shoulder. “It’s been fun having around the manor. I know Dick and Jason have enjoyed hanging out with you.” She smiled and pulled away. “You should come back around after tomorrow.”
(Y/N) bypassed him and started towards her room when he spun and called her. “(Y/N).” she stopped and looked at him, waiting, expecting, and Kyle decided to lay his cards to her, letting her decide. “Spend the night with me.”
For a moment, she was surprised, honest to God surprised, then she smiled sweetly, something he wasn’t really used to, and she murmured, “Come with me.”
And Kyle barely managed to keep himself from tripping over his own feet as he hurried after her.
***
“Shut the door behind you,” she said, and he knew that just from the tone of her voice that she was the one who held the power—not that he cared, all he wanted was her. He felt his heart lurch as the door closed and she motioned him to come behind her. “Mind unzipping me?”
Kyle swallowed thickly as he reached up and grasped the gold zipper, gently tugging it down to where it stopped just above her rear. He also happened to notice that she wasn’t wearing any undergarments and he cursed under his breath. “Fuck, (Y/N).”
She grinned and with one hand undid the buttons behind her neck, then reached back, pulling his hands until his palms were pressed to her bare skin. “Be a dear and slip my dress off for me, hmm?” she leaned back into his hands. “Shouldn’t be too hard now.”
Before Kyle knew what he was doing, his hands were moving underneath the fabric of her dress, around her waist and up her chest, gently grabbing at the flesh of her breasts. (Y/N) gasped, a sound so saccharine in his ears, and leaned her head back on his shoulder.
“Kyle,” she whispered and with his pointer fingers, circled her nipples. Another gasp escaped her as she arched into his touch and she turned her head to the underside of his jaw, sucking the skin at his neck.
“(Y/N),” he groaned, rubbing up against her rear. “Baby...”
She was pushing away from him then, much to his dismay and she spun around, grasping at his suit. “Take your clothes off. All of them. Now.”
All that commanding she was doing was shooting straight to his cock and he obeyed immediately, not even caring about the dress shirt as he ripped it open, the buttons scattering across the carpet. He’d just gotten to his belt when he saw (Y/N) pull down her dress and he almost collapsed on his weak knees when her body came into full view.
For three whole months he’d been slowly driven insane by her tight clothes, guiltily imagining what she looked like underneath during the night, more often than not, relieving the urge.
She smirked and walked up to him, digging her fingers into the top of his pants and turned, pulling him along. They reached the beg and she yanked, sending him backwards onto the bed with a grunt, and then she was climbing atop him.
“I thought you wanted—” he gasped when she grabbed him through his pants. “I thought you wanted me to be naked.”
(Y/N) winked and squeezed him. “I changed my mind.” Leaning close, she let her lips hover above his. “I wanna see how needy I can get you.”
Kyle glared at her and surged forward, sealing her lips in a kiss before he wrapped an arm around her waist, tipping them over. She groaned into their kiss and wrapped her legs around waist. He let his free hand roam her body, caressing her side, squeezing her hip, slipping beneath her leg to grab at the flesh of her thigh. Each grasp, each pinch, each touch had her gasping and Kyle rocked against her, moaning under his breath.
Her fingers busied themselves with his belt and when she got it open, she unbuttoned his pants, and pushed them down a bit. Kyle pulled back to help but the second his hands left her body, he knew he made a mistake because she locked her ankles and placed her hands on his shoulders, shoving back. His back hit the bed and she was on top of him again, this time pinning his hands beside his head.
“Bad boy,” she admonished. “You weren’t supposed to move.”
“Sorry,” he retorted, but he wasn’t. Not in the slightest. “Couldn’t help myself.” He accentuated his point with a deep roll of his hips, and she grip briefly weakened as she ground herself down on him.
“You’re going to help yourself.” She warned, eyes devouring him where he lay. “Every movement is fifteen minutes added to how long I’m going to tease you.”
Kyle grinned. “Yes ma’am.”
(Y/N) matched his grin and before he could even see her move, she had a pillow from the top of the bed placed on his chest, long side up, enough to cover her from sight.
“What are you—” The door opened, and he tipped his head back on the mattress, seeing Dick and Jason gaping at them from the doorway.
For a solid moment, they all stared at one another, too shocked to say a word, then Dick and Jason were letting out the girliest screams Kyle had ever heard them make and they slammed the door shut.
(Y/N) sighed heavily and pressed her face into the pillow. “Lovely. Now we’re going to be all over the group chats.”
Kyle blinked, looking up at her. “You think so?”
“I know so.” She looked at him. “I knew I should’ve booked a penthouse across from this one.” (Y/N) started crawling off him when he reached out and grabbed her hips, keeping her in place; she cocked a brow. “Really? Your mood’s not killed?”
A flash of green appeared in her vision, then the door locked, and he smirked at her. “Nothing can kill my mood for you.” He squeezed her tightly. “Is yours?”
“Not in the slightest.” She reached down and traced the smirk on his lips. “Do me a favor though.”
“Anything,” Kyle agreed, and she grinned wickedly.
“Call me ma’am again.”

A/N: i got an ask yesterday that kinda pushed me into completing this fic, so here it is :) enjoy me actually finishing something for once
~~~
“Why do we have baby food in the fridge?” Harry asked, holding up a suspicious looking bottle of yellow slosh.
“That’s my lunch.” Tom grumbled as he came into the kitchen, taking the bottle from his brother. Harry just shrugged and moved along to get his own lunch out, which was leftover nachos from last night.
“Ah, it’s that time of year again.” Harrison laughed when he noticed Tom’s scrunched up nose, trying to drink his protein shake without having it touch his tongue.
“Oh yeah,” Harry chuckled, “You have to bulk up.”
“The rest of the diet is fine. I can handle the cut back on sweets and carbs, but this shit?” Tom held up the yellow drink in his hands, “I hate it.”
“You have fun with that while we enjoy these.” His brother teasingly held up the nachos that Tom desperately wanted to eat, but he knew couldn’t. Instead, he took a drink out of his shake, physically restraining himself from gagging on the flavor. It wasn’t like he could add anything to it to make it taste better; his trainer had a very strict meal plan for him for the next several weeks, and that was accompanied by a very strict exercise routine. He just had to suck it up— literally.
Meanwhile, you let out a sigh as you stood in your kitchen, looking at the two dozen cupcakes you just made. Of course your cousin would cancel her baby shower that you were catering with desserts after you made said desserts. You only had one housemate, and there was no way that the two of you could eat all of them before they go stale.
“Oh no, are they the wrong color?” Your roommate asked, stepping into the kitchen once she saw the frustrated look on your face.
“I just spent hours making these vanilla cupcakes and now the shower’s been canceled. I don’t know what to do with all these cupcakes now.” You explained as you leaned on the counter, eyeing the now unnecessary cupcakes.
“Too many cupcakes— I never thought we’d have that problem.” She laughed. “Why don’t you give them to Tom?”
“Our neighbor?” You looked at her with raised eyebrows.
“I mean, unless you’re into another guy living in that house, but as I recall, Tom’s the only one you can’t talk to.” She said as she picked up a cupcake for herself, “Whoever you give them to, save us a few. I love your baking.”
“There’s no way I’m doing that.” You shook your head at her.
“Come on, this is the perfect excuse to talk to him.” She encouraged you through a mouthful of blue vanilla cupcake.
“No, I can’t just give him cupcakes randomly.”
“Sure you can! The way to a guy’s heart is through his stomach.” She teased. “Look at the guys that live in that house; they can definitely eat two dozen cupcakes before they go stale. You know I’m right.”
“I hate you sometimes.” You grumbled, taking off your apron and putting the cupcakes into your carrier, specially designed for keeping them stable for traveling.
As your housemate continued to eat her cupcake in pure bliss, you made your way to the house next door with your cupcakes in hand. You felt like it was a stupid idea, but you couldn’t let the cupcakes go to waste. With a small sigh, you knocked on your neighbor’s door, hoping that anyone would answer it besides- well, besides Tom, but by the time you thought that, he already had the door open.
The moment you looked into his chocolate brown eyes, you froze, completely blanking on the reason why you’re there. It wasn’t the “you’re a celebrity” shock; it was the “you’re my super attractive neighbor and you’re really nice and you work out in front of your house sometimes and it kills me” shock. Luckily, he was kind enough to save you from furthering your own embarrassment.
“Are those cupcakes?” He asked curiously as he looked down at the container in your hands.
“Oh, um, yeah,” You answered. “I made these cupcakes for my cousin’s baby shower and it got canceled, so now I have 20 cupcakes, and I thought maybe you’d like them? You don’t have to, if you don’t want to, and I realize now that this is incredibly weird and random, but I swear I haven’t poisoned them or anything.”
Tom laughed, nodding his head, “Poisoned or not, I’ll take them. I’m sure they’re fantastic anyway.”
“Thank you.” You handed him the container, and he immediately opened it up, reaching for one. You saw the smile drop from his face as he slowly retracted his hand.
“Sorry, I-“ He paused, clearing his throat. “I’m about to have lunch so I shouldn’t spoil it. I’ll definitely have one later though.” And just like that, the smile was back on his face.
“No worries.” You smiled.
“Well, thank you, Y/N.” Tom smiled, and you felt your heart flutter. You didn’t know he knew your name; you hadn’t spoken in the three months you lived next door to him (unless you count his football landing in your backyard and you throwing it back over the fence for him).
Without another word, you turned around and darted back into the safety of your house. Tom stayed on his doorstep, watching your retreating figure in confusion. As he stepped back inside his house, he let out a sigh, looking down at the cupcakes in his hands.
“Who was that?” Harry asked through a mouthful of nachos.
“Y/N from next door.” Tom replied, trying his best to hide the small blush on his cheeks at the thought of the random encounter.
“The cute one that doesn’t talk to you?” Harrison inquired, and Tom was quick to send him a glare.
“She gave us cupcakes.” He put the container on the counter as a way to wordlessly let his housemates have at them.
“Marry her.” Harry stated, nachos abandoned for a sweet cupcake. Harrison barely even chewed the first one, making his way to a second.
“It’s just cupcakes.” Tom tried to play it off.
“Uhuh, just cupcakes.” His younger brother nudged him teasingly.
“Stop pouting and go back to your protein shake.” Harrison joked. Grumbling incoherently, Tom did just that— he went back to his protein shake and continued the art of keeping the disgusting taste from touching his tongue.
A few days later, the cupcakes were cleared from the container, eaten and enjoyed by everyone except for Tom (even Tessa got some because Paddy dropped crumbs on the floor when they came over). With your cleaned container in hand, Tom made his way over to your house next door. He nervously smoothed out his t-shirt one last time before knocking on your door.
“Coming!” He heard you call from inside. A couple moments later, you opened up the door in surprise.
“Oh, Tom.” You said quietly, feeling insecure as you looked down at your messy apron.
“Are you baking more food?” He asked, his signature smile on his face.
“Technically not right now. I’m filling eclairs.” You replied, and his eyes went wide in surprise.
“Wow, you really know your way around the kitchen.” Tom admired, making your cheeks heat up.
“Do you- do you mind helping me for a minute? I’m having issues piping.” You sheepishly admitted. You fully expected him to say no, come up with some half-ass excuse about how he was busy, but then he surprised you with a nod.
“Of course, I’ll help.”
You stepped aside and let him inside. Leading him back into the kitchen, you asked, “How’d you like the cupcakes?”
“Oh, they were great. Really good, thank you.” He didn’t hesitate to compliment the sweet that he’d never tasted. Considering how much his friends and family loved your cupcakes though, he could only assume they were the best. He thought maybe you caught his lie, but then you just got straight to work at your eclair-covered counter. Tom set the container aside on an empty counter and quickly washed his hands.
“They keep losing their shape as I pipe them, so can you just hold them upside?” You asked, holding up a bare eclair. Tom held it as instructed and you got your piping bag together. He watched as you concentrated on filling the treat, your eyebrows furrowed together and your teeth sinking into your teeth a little. He felt his stomach begin to grumble from the intoxicating smell of your kitchen. It seemed like you had everything he couldn’t eat, just out on your counter.
“Are you hungry?” You spoke up, a few eclairs later when Tom’s stomach groaned loudly.
“Oh, no, I’m fine.” He insisted. Looking at the eclairs on the counter, he knew you’d offer him one without a second thought, and he wasn’t sure how much longer he could fight off the urge to break his stupid diet.
He continued to focus on you as you focused on the eclairs. With all but a few pastries filled, you grabbed another empty one. You let out a frustrated huff as your piping bag struggled to cooperate with the pastry.
“Get in there.” You grumbled, annoyed at the difficult eclair.
“Too tight?” Tom asked.
“No, it’s just-“ You trailed off as you finally got it to work. You smiled proudly, happy that it was finally working right.
“Am I about to walk in on kitchen sex or can I come in?” You heard your housemate jokingly call out from the hallway. While you froze up in embarrassment, Tom shook with laughter. She walked into the kitchen with a smirk on her face, sending you a very obvious wink that Tom completely saw.
“You’re the worst.” You muttered, moving on to the next eclair.
“So you two just, uh, filling eclairs?” Your housemate asked, grabbing one of the filled pastries and taking a bite out of it.
“Yes, it’s a very important two person job.” Tom chuckled, and she nodded.
“Y/N, how the fuck are you so good at this?” She turned to you, taking another bite of her food. “Oh my god, Tom, you have to try these eclairs.”
“I’m good, don’t want to eat Y/N’s food.” He answered, but his stomach betrayed him with another growl.
“You seem really hungry. Are you sure you don’t want any?” You inquired, and Tom shook his head politely.
“It’s okay, really.”
“Do you want to take some home? For you and your housemates? I’ve made too many again.” You offered, making him laugh.
“You have that problem a lot, don’t you?” He teased. You playfully rolled your eyes at him as you finished the last eclair. Grabbing the container from the other counter, you began to reload it with eclairs.
“Here you go.” You smiled, holding it out to Tom.
“Thank you. I should probably get going.” He trailed off a little, sounding a bit disappointed.
“Let me know how they are.” You bid him one last farewell before he left.
When he returned home a whole minute later, he set the container full of fresh eclairs on the kitchen counter and immediately went in search for his scheduled snack, which was simply just an apple, but, compared to the eclairs he just helped make, an apple never seemed so disappointing.
“More free dessert?” Harry asked, eyes lighting up when he spotted the familiar container.
“They’re eclairs today.” Tom replied.
“On a scale of one to ten, how much does this suck?” He teased, taking a massive bite from the eclair. Tom glared at his brother before leaving the room to enjoy his apple in an eclair (and Harry) free zone.
This all became a routine between you and Tom. He’d bring you back your container after a few days and you’d fill it up (or switch it out) with more freshly made treats. Tom had to just sit back and watch everyone around him enjoy your pies, brownies, cookies, tarts, even croissants. You even made a cake and he had to bring it to a family birthday party. The more time he spent with you though, the more he found himself really liking you— but there was also the catch that the more time he spent with you, the more he struggled to maintain his diet. He almost snuck a cookie when no one was around but then he remembered the last time he broke his diet and shuddered at the thought of it.
One day, a few weeks later, Tom heard the familiar sound of your special knock on his front door. Confused because you’d given him fudge just yesterday, he opened the door.
“I got locked out.” You said as soon as he opened the door. As if you didn’t feel awkward enough around him before, now you’re really asking him for a big favor. “If it’s not overstepping, could I stay here? My housemate should be back in a bit and she has her key.”
“Come on in.” Tom stepped aside for you to come into his house. You had never actually been inside it before, and it seemed to be just as homey as yours, but with a tad more frat boy mess in it, complete with video games stashed on the shelves of the entertainment center and random beer bottles in the house.
“Sorry, I’ve been meaning to clean up.” He apologized, rushing to grab the empty bottles to recycle them. You just laughed in response, still taking in the home, “Do you want water or anything?”
“Water would be great, thank you.” You replied. You followed Tom into the kitchen and leaned against the counter as you waited for your water. “I’m thinking of making these cookie bar things. Are any of you allergic to nuts?”
“No food allergies here.” Tom answered with a laugh, passing you the cup filled with water. You spotted the half eaten block of fudge on his counter and smiled.
“How’s the fudge?” You asked before taking a sip of your water.
“It’s the best. Truly the best I’ve ever had.” He stated definitively.
And it happened to be at that moment that Harry came into the room, scouting for more fudge. As he picked up a piece, he realized that you and Tom were in the room, “Thank you, Y/N, for all of the food.”
“It’s no problem. I enjoy sharing it.” You smiled kindly at him.
“Too bad you can’t have any.” He teased his older brother before shoving the large piece of fudge into his mouth. As Harry left the room, Tom went red in embarrassment.
“Best fudge you’ve ever had, huh?” You asked, crossing your arms defensively.
“It’s not that I don’t like fudge— I love fudge—“
“But you don’t like mine?” You weren’t sure why you were so upset over it, but maybe it was the fact that you thought he truly enjoyed your desserts. “Did you eat any of it?”
“No.” Tom answered honestly, defeat present on his face as he hung his head in shame.
“Then why did you lie about it?” You stated, unwavering in the hurt look in your features.
Tom mumbled something, and you furrowed your eyebrows at him, unable to understand a word he said. A little bit louder, he spoke up again, “I’m on a bulking diet and I can’t have sugar, but you were really happy giving me things and— and it gave me a good excuse to actually talk to you.”
With a sheepish smile on his face, he finally looked up at you. You paused, processing his words before finding your own voice, “You wanted to talk to me?”
“Yeah, I’m kinda really into you.” He said. “I was going to ask you out on a date, but, uh, I can understand if you don’t—”
“I’d love to.” You cut him off quickly, not giving yourself the chance to think about your response. Tom’s eyes lit up, hopefully.
“Really?”
“Really.” You nodded. Before you could say anything further, your phone began to ring and you looked down; it was your housemate, meaning she was home now and could let you in. “I should get going.”
“Does tomorrow work? I could pick you up at 7?” Tom offered, and you smiled as the two of you made your way to his front door.
“7 sounds great. I’ll see you then.” You said, stepping out onto his porch. “Thank you, again.”
“Anytime.” He answered with a grin. Knowing he’d watch you as you walked home, you had to maintain yourself from skipping a little in happiness.
Even with your big date tomorrow though, you still barely slept, spending all night searching through fitness sites for new recipes. That night, right as the clock struck 7, you heard a knock on your door. Eagerly, you grabbed a new container full of your latest bake and opened your door.
“Before we leave, can you try this?” You asked, handing Tom the container. He looked at the appetizing bars questioningly.
“Is this a test? I can’t have—” Tom started, but you cut him off, shaking your head.
“They’re not sweets. They’re protein bars.” You explained. “I found a recipe last night. It’s peanut butter and rice protein.”
“You made me protein bars?” His voice almost broke as he looked at you in disbelief.
“Well, yeah, I feel bad for giving you so many things you couldn’t eat, so I wanted to do something for you.” You could barely get your words out before he was unceremoniously stuffing a protein bar in his mouth. He knew he had a routine that he was supposed to follow but, hey, at least this was filled with protein.
“I’m sorry, I’ve been dying to try your baking, and these are so good.” Tom sighed in relief with a clear mouth.
“So I’ll keep that recipe then.” You laughed. You stepped out of your house and closed the door behind you.
“I should drop these off. One moment.” He jogged back over to his house and threw the door open.
“These are mine! No eating them!” He shouted to his nosy housemates, putting the container of protein bars on the side table.
“Marry her!” Harry and Harrison both called back out to him as he shut the door. With a twinge of embarrassment from you hearing their words, Tom turned back to you.
“Ready?”
Hasan and Declan - 16
Series masterlist
Content warnings: intimate whumper, general violence, threatened sensory deprivation, slightly suggestive, police mention, blindfolding, and a lot of banter.
(RECORDING TO BE ADDED LATER)
Previously…
~~~
[Friday evening, a day after the previous chapter]
“Hurry up, last few bites. I’m heading out for the evening and I haven’t exactly managed my time well,” Hasan said, watching Declan scoop every last instant ramen noodle out of the cup. At least he didn’t bother with the vegetable scraps stuck to the side or Hasan would’ve ripped it out of his hands.
“I’ve gotta take my time, okay? I don’t want to throw all this up. I was close enough with the protein shake already.”
“Mmmmhhmmmm…” They rested their chin on folded hands, intently watching him bring the cup to his lips and drink the broth. It was important that Declan finished this, they reminded themself. Pushing him further into starvation would only make their life harder. They’d done enough to establish his place and weaken most physical resistance until they could work him down mentally.
“There, see? All done.”
Hasan snatched the cup from his hands and Declan gave them a look.
“Like I said: I’m in a hurry. I’ll tuck you in for bedtime when I get back,” they said, waving a hand toward the door to his room. “Get up.”
He stood from the couch with a sigh and made to start walking, but he didn’t. Hasan took him by the wrist with a sigh, but Declan planted his feet. He knew they could’ve pulled him over, but they paused and turned around, raising their eyebrows.
“I… I miss the outside,” he shrugged.
“I couldn’t tell,” Hasan deadpanned, jerking him forward a step.
“Well- yeah, but running is more about freedom than anything. I miss just being outside.”
“Take some time to process this and we can talk at your next appointment. Get in, Dec.”
“No!” he shouted, frustration and offense over his face. “I just wanna go outside! Whether it’s with you or by myself, I- I honestly couldn’t give a shit. I can’t *stay* down here.”
Hasan sighed, disappointed.
“Darling, how am I supposed to trust *that* after everything you’ve done so far? You were lovely for me this day and the last, but only after I made it clear to you that you cannot run.”
“Then- then make it clear again!” Declan sputtered. “I understand why you’re worried, but we can make this work!”
“Really, now?” they sneered lightly. “How willing are you to do as I say?”
“Very,” he answered breathlessly.
“You’re so desperate. Just look at yourself.”
“You like it.” He choked on the words too late. He didn’t want them to like what he did. He didn’t want to earn their trust this way.
Hasan raised a brow, and for a moment Declan was sure he fucked up.
“You’re either desperate enough that you feel no shame, or you’re trying so very hard to hide it from me. Which one is it?”
“I have no clue.” Words tumbled from his mouth before he could think.
“Option three it is, then: you’re willing to say anything to get out of this basement, and you haven’t learned at all,” Hasan said.
“I know you can come up with some awful way to keep me locked down anyway! Come on, aren’t you good enough for that?!”
“Not with that attitude,” they scoffed over a light laugh.
Declan paused, narrowing his eyes. Implying there would be an attitude that got him what he wanted?
“I’m still here, aren’t I? I haven’t tried to run in a few days now. I’ve never made it farther than you meant me to. You’re in control of the situation.”
“Flattery, now. Really?” Hasan glared.
“No, no, that’s not my point!”
“If I were a smarter owner I’d’ve gagged you already.”
“Oh, come *on!* It’s not that big of a deal! All I’m asking is for an hour or two out of this god forsaken-!” A backhand crashed across his face and Declan’s mind went blank, vision spinning. Hasan grabbed his chin and twisted it back toward them.
“You’re having such a hard time remembering your place this evening. Poor thing,” they spat. “I’ll remind you that you’re an illegal captive, and a very reluctant one at that. So reluctant, in fact, that you’re trying to beg your way out.”
“This is a humble reques-” Another smack.
“You’re not down on your knees where I’d like you, nor are you pleading pathetically… but that’s about where the differences end, my dearest. You’re asking–*imploring,* really–for something that you have not earned otherwise, and that only I can give you. Is that not what begging is? Am I mistaken?” A flush finally rose in Declan’s face.
“So? What does it matter if I’m begging?”
“Having *not earned this otherwise* was rather the point of that statement. I have no reason to do this for you, and the only reasons you’ve presented are so incredibly self centered.”
“Yep, because I’m- hh, please don’t-” Declan ducked away from a raised hand.
“Then listen to me. If you want to go somewhere, you need to tell me what I’ll get out of it.”
“You keep asking me *because* you want this, Hasan.”
“Do I?” They asked innocently.
“Yeah, obviously. I mean, just the other day you were- you were telling me just how much you want to livestream my torture, so…”
“You think I’ll be torturing you in the public eye?”
“You wish.”
Hasan quirked a brow.
“You do! I mean, even just parading me around without anyone knowing what’s really happening would probably be good enough for you!”
They snickered softly and Declan gave them a dirty look.
“Wow, it’s like you’ve finally understood the reason I humored this conversation,” Hasan said. “I doubted you’d even get this far if I’m being honest…”
“Well? That’s something, isn’t it?”
“It’s a start. Would you like to hear the terms for going outside?” Declan nodded rapidly. “Well, first of all, you’re to stay covered up at all times. None of this,” they trace over the cuts peeking out of his shirt neckline, “or this,” they point to the rings of rope burn around his wrists.
“Easy enough, yeah. I hope I had a jacket in my laundry.”
“I’m sure I can loan you something if not. I’d have no problem sharing clothes with my dearest Declan,” Hasan cooed and said man could only roll his eyes. “You aren’t permitted to talk in public, either. Not to me or anyone else unless I cue you to. No gesturing or making noises to others, even if I do hurt you. As far as anyone else is concerned, you are mute. Make sense?”
“Doesn’t sound like something you can enforce but alright.”
“Right, there’s your first strike. Now I get to take care of that rule by myself. Any more questioning or retaliation will be taken the same way.”
“I- I just…” His captor raised a brow. “Christ, okay… what else?”
“I think I’d better tack on restraints. Subtly, of course, but you’re going to clasp your hands and keep your feet together so they can maintain that secrecy.”
“I… okay,” Declan sighed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Now I *know* you’re thinking. Spit it out,” Hasan ordered.
“I just don’t like feeling constrained.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know, it makes me feel trapped.”
“Precisely, which is why it’s a requirement,” they smiled brightly. “You shouldn’t feel free when I take you out of here. Could encourage some stupid ideas.”
“Doesn’t mean I like it,” Declan sighed. “Is that all?”
“Have patience. I’ve yet to explain your consequences. If you break those rules and someone is alerted to anything being wrong, I will tell them that we were playing out a public kink scene.”
“Isn’t that sexual harassment? You of all people should know that!”
“It’s not an entirely innocent solution, but it’s one that people are far less likely to mark as criminal. After that, you and I go out to the car and come right back here. I’d probably deprive you of all your senses for at least a day after that. Maybe I’d find you every once in a while and hurt you when you can’t expect it. Wouldn’t that be nice?”
“Yeah, great,” Declan swallowed tightly, looking away.
“Good. Because then, if we should be unlucky enough to have the police called on us, I’m shoving you in the trunk again and making a visit to my boyfriend, which involves carrying you over state lines. I don’t know if you’ve heard anything about kidnapping cases, but the farther away I get you, the harder it will be to find you. Just some food for thought.”
“Police can track you…” Declan protested quietly.
“Response time is approximately ten minutes on a good day. I promise you: we’ll be *long* gone by then.”
He avoided eye contact, visually tracing the carpet instead.
“But things won’t be getting to that point, now will they? You’ve given up running. You’re going outside simply for a taste of sanity.”
“...guess I am. Sure.”
“And that abundant enthusiasm has somehow evaporated… What a shame,” Hasan frowned exaggeratedly. “Oh, you know what? I did forget a rule. Would you like to hear it?”
Declan nodded, if only to keep himself safe from further ridicule.
“Turn around. Right now.” Apathetically, he did so.
Hasan moved a few steps but Declan didn’t turn around. The next thing he felt was thick fabric sliding across his face, completely covering his eyes. The moment he struggled against it, an arm circled around his neck and crushed him into Hasan’s chest.
“Stay still or you’re staying here. Touch that *at all* and you’re staying here.”
He almost did. God, he really wanted to. This wasn’t going to be worth it. He knew that somewhere in his thick skull, didn’t he? But still… there was a chance, and even if there wasn’t, he’d get out of this basement. That was the first step.
Hopefully there’d be plenty more.

Hiii I love you bts 8 member works!! Is it possible to request the 8 member being a vegetarian? Thank youuuu
BTS 8th member is a Vegetarian
A/N: Thabk you for your request!! I’m a vegetarian so I could relate😂😂 I’m sorry that this is a shorter one
Requests are open💜
Even if I don’t get to them too fast🙈 I’m so sorry that it’s taking me forever to write your requests but hopefully once July hits I’ll be way more consistent 💜
Also you can talk to me at any time even if it’s not requests!!💜
Jin
* Jin wouldn’t mind at all and would be insanely proud and impressed that you had self control to do that
* Many Korean dishes are already vegetarian, but if they were having a meal with meat in it he would make sure there was other food options for you to have
* He wouldn’t mind making separate food for you
* Because he loves you
* If you were going to become vegetarian while you were in the band, he would at first be concerned it was because you were worried about your weight
* But as long as it wasn’t and as long as your were healthy he would be ok with it
* If he thought you were going vegetarian just to lose weight, he would make sure to have a talk with you about why you don’t need to do that
* Even if you aren’t vegetarian you can still be at a healthy acceptable weight
* If you were vegetarian before you got to the band he would be curious if you know any more vegetarian recipes, and if you do now you HAVE to teach him
* If you liked to cook he would drag you to the kitchen to learn more vegetarian recipes with him
* And if you didn’t like to cook well you’re still in the kitchen, but now more for being a taste tester
Yoongi
* He would be curious about it
* He’s thought about going vegetarian a few times(idk if this is true so don’t quote me😂)
* He would want to talk about why you were deciding to become one or why you already were one
* He would probably bring up the meat industry and how it can be very inhumane in some circumstances
* He would probably talk about the meat that the boys are eating and would look up where it came from
* If you two found certain companies that produced meat were sketchy you would switch to better companies
* He would take you out to eat all the time and if you were trying a new vegetarian dish he has never seen he would probably steal a few bites
* For research purposes only obviously 😂
* He wouldn’t mind cooking you food either so that you have options at dinner
* He might even try to eat less meat and more plant based foods
* He loves chicken too much to go full vegetarian but he respects your decision
* Eat Jin based on vegetarian options ft you
Hoseok
* He was worried about your energy
* He wanted to make sure they you didn’t become malnourished and lose energy too fast
* So he watched your food intake like a hawk
* And your sleeping
* Because he wanted to be sure you would be ok
* He didn’t mind that you wanted to be a vegetarian but he knew it wasn’t something he wanted to do
* If he did think you were becoming tired too easily he would bring it up with namjoon and make sure you were getting all the vitamins you needed
* If he thought you weren’t being healthy enough he would scold you make a doctors appointment for you unless your annual appointment was coming up
* He would probably join the maknaes in teasing you a little but not too much
* And if he stole your food every once in a while without you knowing so you blamed one of the others..then it’s ok
Namjoon
* When he heard that you were a vegetarian/ were going to become vegetarian he looked up what vitamins you might be missing out on
* Iron was one of them so he made you have iron vitamins every night
* And not those flinstones one because he’s not cruel
* Whenever you went for your yearly doctors checkup he would ask the doctor if you were having any vitamin deficiencies and if you were he would make sure there were supplements available for you and that you took them
* Another concern was protein
* So he went out-Jin drove- and bought you ensure
* The maknaes would tease you about you being an eighty year old but honestly the chocolate one wasn’t horrible
* He made sure you had at least two a day, but since they weren’t horrible you didn’t mind having more(I actually really love ensure😂)
* He would also want to know why you became a vegetarian
* And at dinner he wouldn’t mind eating whatever vegetarian option was made available every so often either
Jimin
* He would thinks it’s so cute how you love animals
* And if it wasn’t for the animals but for your weight he would be so concerned
* Your his baby sister, so he couldn’t let you feel upset about anything especially your body image
* He would stand in solidarity with you about being vegetarian for the animals though
* And would be so happy that the BTS family wasn’t supporting inhumane meat producers anymore
* He wouldn’t mind stealing your food every so often either
* Because the vegetarian options aren’t terrible
* Mostly
* He has horror stories because he’s trusted you when you said something was good after you almost threw up
* You traitor
* But he got back at you by having a tickle fight so it’s ok..for now
Taehyung
* He was just like Jimin in his reaction
* And then once you got ensure added to your diet he got curious
* Because how can chocolate be bad?
* In his opinion, he’s found out how chocolate can be bad
* And now anytime you drink it he makes a face
* As if he’s drinking coffee
* If he’s feeling especially dramatic he will add gagging noises for your benefit
* That Jin will tell him to stop doing if he hears
* He also is happy that you are using better meat producers and might talk about it on a vlive once in a while
* To help educate people on making better decisions
* He doesn’t mind vegetarian food as much as Jimin and you sometimes
* So if you refuse to eat one of the vegetarian options he wouldn’t mind eating it
* Unless it’s really bad
* In which case another tickle fight happens because you let him eat that horrible plant
Jungkook
* When he first found out he wanted to see how long he could go without meat
* And then he tried to turn it into a competition of you two
* Which he did sadly lose
* He even drank ensure while he was in the competition with you
* And he learned that you like your ensure shook just the right amount so of course he had to shake it just a little too much when you went to grab one
* But it was ok because the consistency you like came back fast
* So he wasn’t being completely mean
* But he did cal you grandma
* And pointed out that elderly people mostly drank that stuff
* Sometimes he would make sly comments like do you need me to help you across the street grandma
* Are you going to knit me a sweater?!?! Grammy?!?
BTS
* Overall they were very supportive
* Even if they did tease you a little bit
* Their main priority was still to make sure you were safe and healthy
* As long as you got all the nutrients you needed and stayed a healthy weight they didn’t mind
* They would also be super willing to make you food if what they were eating had meat
* They were proud of you for doing something you believed in whether it was eating a different diet to get healthier or to not eat animals

Apocalypse: Sanctuary - Chapter 1
EDIT (6/10/2020): I know this is unprofessional as hell, but I added more because the ending didn’t sit right with me. Was too excited too hurry up and post and forgot there was a reason I plotted things out in a certain way. Hope you all can forgive me.
Finally! Chapter 1! I hope you guys enjoy it. I loved reading your comments and every kudos made me more excited to keep writing. Also, I apologize for the weird spacing throughout the post. I had to copy it from scrivener to AO3 to here and it just made things messy, but it’s 1AM rn and I’m tired.
Read on AO3 or Fanfiction.net!

Emily shifted in her seat, head rebelling after spending a week in the dim light of candles which cast everything in an orange hue and made the shadows dance on the walls. Even her large circular glasses did nothing to ease her sight… it was a wonder she wasn’t already legally blind. Either way, she had the mother of all headaches.
 The constant fires always left E uncomfortably hot and the layers upon layers they were forced to dress didn’t help. First thing the wardens did when they arrived was strip her down and burn every shred of fabric… her favorite shirt nothing but ash. Clothing standards were non-negotiable. Evening wear on the left side of the armoire. Don’t mistake it for your daily clothes or you won’t receive dinner. Cocktails before-hand at 6:30 sharp. Lucky for Emily, she was always early for everything and had yet to find out what the punishment was for that particular faux-pas. She wished nothing but to grab the t-shirt and shorts she had arrived in just to find some relief.
  “Be careful what you wish for,”  Her mother had always told her.
 At first, she had been relieved when the others arrived. Now she had to wonder if she would have been better off on her own… the supplies she had counted in storage would certainly have lasted longer. Small little cubes with all the nutrients they needed. They probably would have been better with non-perishables, but she doubted the wardens would risk a venture outside to hunt for some… not like they would be able to eat it, anyway.
 Another stabbing pain pulsed at her temples, hands going to smooth it out as she listened to the chattering around her that sounded more like white noise than coherent sentences. Waiting out the apocalypse in solidarity would have driven her insane, humans being the social creatures they were. However, she doubted any of them would survive the end of the world with their sanity intact.
 Not that one could guess it was the end of the world by the conversations of her fellow residents, most of them rich and most of the snobby. Gallant and Coco were thick as thieves… their personalities almost comically matching that of Regina George from Mean Girls. Evie, Gallant’s washed-up film star of a grandmother was almost repulsively republican — so homophobic and racist that most of the residents hoped she’d have a heart attack and die. The Stevens, a mother and son pair along with the son’s boyfriend, were tolerable. Andre liked to throw shade, but he was balanced by his witty counterpart, Stu.
 She couldn’t help but smile to herself as she thought of their earlier conversation.
   “It’s like Satan’s Spotify playlist,” Stu had joked in response to Gallants endless complaining, making Andre nearly choke on the water he had been drinking.
  “For the amount of times I’ve been told I’m in league with the devil, I’d have expected him to have better taste.” Emily had joked in return.
Stu laughed and Andre only sighed, “don’t even get me started on the clothes.”
  “Well at least you don’t have to wear a corset,” Coco had snipped, hand going up to pat at her hair in an attempt to keep it in place.
  Emily tugged at her own, something poking her in her stomach, “These are not historically accurate.”
  “Let me guess,” Stu said, gesturing to her glasses, “history major?”
  “Insomniac.”
  The pounding returned to her head and she leaned on the table, pressing at her temples with the hope of some relief. Maybe she could ask a Grey to get her some ice… she doubted Venable had a stash of ibuprofen in the reserves.
 It had been 14 days since they had gotten here. 3 of which she had spent on her own, wandering the halls with a candelabra like a damsel from a Victorian novel. She tugged at the high collar of her shirt. Whoever designed this hole in the ground was determined to have them living in a corset-laced wet dream.
 “Are you okay?” The girl beside her asked, a gentle hand placed on Emily’s arm. She had just arrived at the outpost, 2 weeks after the bombs dropped, with a boy around the same age. They had barely been able to introduce themselves before Venable cut in, ringing a bell obnoxiously to usher them to dinner.
 The few words the pair had said still haunted her.
   “It’s all gone,” The brown-haired boy had told them at Gallant’s insistence, lips pressed into a thin line as he tried not the let the emotions that came with those words to overwhelm him.
  “Everything,” The girl echoed, voice hollow.
  Gallant fell back as if he had been shot, panic threatening to overtake his lungs after it was done squeezing the life out of his heart.
  “What…” Emily had stuttered out, trying to calm herself, “What did it look like?”
  Andre’s voice had cracked and spat out like venom, “who cares about what it looks like?”
  Stu had placed a hand on his lover's shoulder. His brows were furrowed and there was a slight shake that came over his body. Andre curled into him, Stu wrapping his arms around him as if he could somehow shield the man from the world.
  Her anxiety spread through her like a wildfire, the attempted facade of strength cracking, “It matters because it could tell us how fucked we are!”
  “We’re well past fucked!” Coco had snapped.
  The girl with ebony hair focused on Emily, eyes welling with emotion she all too well understood.
  “No sun…” She said, forcing the words from her mouth, “just green… smog.”
  “Does that mean anything to you?” Stu had asked her, eyes betraying his own fears.
  “Hiroshima happened in the… 50s? Chernobyl happened in the 80s,” Emily began to say, too in her thoughts to notice the side-eyed stares of her companions, “and that was still radioactive before it was radioactive… again.”
  The comment seemed to stir something in the new girl’s head, “I heard about that… people were able to take trips last year… once in a lifetime opportunity.”
  Coco scoffed, “so is dying.”
  “Wait, so like… this can go away?” Gallant asked.
  The girl looked to Emily, “People were living on Hiroshima before all this.”
  “Possibly,” Emily mused, “Then again, we’d have to multiply that incident by… well, a lot.”
  “We’d have to find out where and how many bombs were dropped.” The girl added, “as well as the area affected by it.”
  Coco frowned, still more focused on her hair than the literal end of the world, “could you stop talking like that? You’re seriously freaking me out.”
  “We’re all freaking out,” Dinah snipped.
  “Just tired,” Emily reassured the girl, leaning back in her chair. She realized she had yet to ask the girl her name, but the Grey’s entered with their meal before she could — one Grey for each purple at the table. The large black plates were almost amusingly large in comparison to the singular small cube that sat at its center.
 A full table-set was spread out before them, silver soup spoons, teaspoons, knives, and a salad fork mocking them every day. They stood out against the dark wood and reminded them that they were doomed to a life of tasteless jello for the rest of their lives. Emily finally understood how her pets felt, fed the same food day in and day out… at least she had bothered to change up the flavor. Her body rebelled against her after the third day, gagging whenever she brought the cube anywhere near her mouth. A few days of starvation quickly rectified the situation and greatly amused her jailer who was all too happy to put the food back from whence it came.
 Venable chose the seating arrangements, naturally. Emily was sat beside the two new arrivals, positioned as far from the woman as possible. It was an arrangement neither of them minded. Emily didn’t hold her tongue in moments such as these and she didn’t like placing her wellbeing in the hands of another. Venable expected complete and total control over her residents, enforcing strict standards of order that were almost as tight as her hair, tightly pulled together in a double french twist at the back of her head. Emily was the stray hair that wouldn’t lay flat no matter what she did.
 The new arrivals stared at their plates as the Greys placed the cubes before them, sending each other confused glances and waiting to see what the rest of them did. It hardly looked appetizing, brown and having a texture reminiscent of a health-nut’s chia-seed protein bar.
Emily poked at her own food for good measure, feeling her throat clench at the mere thought of eating again. It didn’t listen no matter how many times she tried to reason with it. You’d think the body would behave and finally realize that this was as good as things would get.
 Gallant turned towards the girl to his left, “Don’t be too disappointed.”
 “Darling,” Evie sighed from the other side of the table, spreading a napkin across her lap, “You don’t know what disappointment is until you’ve slept with Yul Brynner.”
 The mere thought of the old woman having sex was enough to make Emily’s lips curl in disgust… maybe she didn’t need to eat after all. For once Dinah was amused by the old crone, chuckling as she cut apart her cube like it was a five-course meal instead of the science project of Elon Musk.
 “I want to die,” She could hear Gallant mutter a few seats over, head in his hands as he contemplated his decision to bring his nana along on whatever this adventure was.
 Dinah was quick to explain the cubes to the new pair, “The cube on your plate contains every vitamin our body needs…”
 Across from Emily, Coco ungracefully shoved the entire cube into her mouth with one fell swoop, cheeks puffing out. Dinah continued to speak, pretending to have not seen Coco, words coming out rushed, “…or so they tell us.”
 “Whether or not it aids in our caloric intake is up in the air,” Emily added, following the woman’s lead and gently cutting into the cube.
 “The fewer calories the better!” Evie proclaimed from down the table, waving her fork in the air to accentuate her statement.
 “Until you become a skeleton.”
 Emily had learned from Dinah’s example to take small bites, savor it. She hoped it would fool her body into thinking it was eating more. Either way, her stomach still growled and she was grateful to her handler for taking her to Chick-Fil-A on their way to the Outpost. The mere thought of that last meal made her mouth water.
 Coco’s silverware clattered onto her plate as she closed her eyes and whined, “I’m still hungry… I am so tired of the hunger.”
 A fist to the table made Emily jump, dropping her own silverware in turn. The girl next to her looked to the other residents as Coco stood up abruptly, letting her chair screech against the floor as it was thrown back. She looked to Emily and all she could do was offer a half-hearted shrug that said,  “same shit as usual.”
 … God, she missed John Mulaney.
 “Fuck! This! Bullshit!” Coco continued, “With all the thought that went into this they don’t have a  single  bag of  Pirate’s Booty  in the pantry?”
 Evie sat back as if watching a soap opera while the rest of the residents braced themselves for another tantrum. Coco raved on, unaware of the sudden looming figures coming up behind her, “For a hundred  million   dollars a ticket, I expect goddamn Gordon Ramsay in the kitchen cooking us   real  food!”
 Then she stopped, a tap of a cane on the floor signaling the arrival of Venable, Miss Mead on her heels like an obedient dog. They braced themselves for another, self riotous lecture on appreciating what they had as if none of them mourned for what was. Slowly, head bowed and aware of her impending doom, Coco turned.
 The slap rang in everyone’s ears, causing a collective gasp to fill the room. The brown-haired boy beside Coco caught her as she fell back, her hand going instantly to her cheek. As she stood once more she took it away and examined it. Emily could see the barest hint of blood on the blonde’s fingers. A growl threatened to rise in her throat and her lips curled in a disgusted snarl.
 It was hard to keep calm as she addressed the woman donned in black, “we’re all adults here. We can use our words… I hope. At least  some  of us have mastered that much.”
 Venable turned to her. The black-haired girl beside her shifted uncomfortably. One could cut the tension between the two women with a knife.
 Finally, Venable pulled her eyes away and turned her focus to the spoiled girl before her, her hand resting back on the cane she always carried, “Let me be very clear so there will be no misunderstanding. We have enough nutrition to last for the next   18 months  and if our situation doesn’t improve, you can count on less and less.”
 Slowly, Coco sat. Shaking hands pulled away from her cheek as she reached for the chair. She was so scared that her movements were stiff. Yes, she had been yelled at before. God knows she was a stubborn woman with a temper, but no one had ever slapped her before.
 Venable retreated into the only exit of the room, slithering back into the shadows. Venable’s tone bordered on the overly-theatric, playing the part of a woman burdened by knowledge she dare not speak lest it disrupts the peace.
 “You could have told us that from the very beginning.” Emily blurted out.
 The woman didn’t even bother to look at her as her lips curled into a mocking smile. When she finally turned to Emily, her tone was thick with condescension, “and cause  unnecessary  panic?”
 “You know what they say about communication and relationships.”
 “ Situation ?” Gallant asked, waving a hand to get their attention, “What is our   situation ?”
 Miss Mead looked to her boss whose face glimmered with uncertainty and surprise, but only for a moment. Venable was debating whether or not to tell the truth or keep them in the constant state of unknowing, easy to control. If she were still in college, Emily could have written an essay on the ways Venable reminded her of the worst sort of people in their history books.
 “We had a perimeter alert this morning,” She finally told them, less than pleased with the fact the words were leaving her mouth at all, “Something penetrated the grounds. It was a carrier pigeon delivering a message from our benefactors.”
 Coco gasped, “Wait! A pigeon! Can we eat it?”
 Emily sighed and leaned on the table, resisting the urge to hand her head in her hands. This place was going to be migraine city the moment she tapered off her medication.
 Miss Mead’s tone echoed her feelings, brows scrunching at the pure idiocy of the question.
 “It was  contaminated   by the   fallout .”
 Her response didn’t phase Evie, who made it abundantly clear she had never made a meal for herself in her entire life, “Can we  boil  it?”
 Venable reached into her pockets and pulled out a small sliver of paper and began to read, “There are no more governments. Only rotting mounds of corpses, too many to bury.”
 Emily’s hands fell to her lap and curled into fists until she could feel her fingernails embed themselves into the flesh of her palms. All she could hear were the voice-mails, each and every last plead for life. She could still hear her brother’s voice, cracking in a way she hadn’t heard since their grandmother’s funeral. It was etched into her brain to the last breath. To his last breath, he took his role as an older sibling seriously, trying to soothe her fears instead of his own.
   “I don’t want to die. God, I don’t want to—”
  Venable continued reading, “Starving people kill for a piece of bread.”
   “I love you… I… You were… are a good sister.”
  “Three outposts have been overrun.” Venable’s voice droned on, voice cracking ever slightly as she reached the end of the letter, “We are the last vestiges of civilized life on the planet.”
   “I… I know you would have made a difference… I wish I could have seen the life you would have created.”
  Venable looked to them all as she read the last line, “be vigilant.”
 Emily was pulled from her thoughts by a squeeze to her hand, instinctively pulling it back until she realized a hand covering her own. When Emily met the ebony-haired girl’s gaze she offered a reassuring smile, Emily nodded in a small message of thanks before brushing away the single tear which had begun to roll down her cheeks.
 “Everything we know is gone,” Mead summarized, eyes blank. It was nice to see that even the Warden and Venable felt fear. Made them feel… human.
 “In  two     weeks ?”, Andre shook his head, staring blankly at his hands, “That’s all it took?”
 In a rare show of empathy, Gallant reached out and squeezed the man’s hands. Emily noted the way Stu watched the interaction, eyes watching the hands as if it were a snake slithering in his direction.
 “They made you think the system was a rock,” Mead explained, standing at attention with her hands locked together in front of her, “It was a water balloon. One prick of the needle and —”
 She made a popping noise, “that’s all it took.”
 It wasn’t as if Emily was surprised. One of the first things she learned in a college psychology class was that the only reason the world didn’t fall into chaos was due to people putting faith in a system that would protect them… conventional. The bombs had scattered them, left them weak to the chaos that ensued. It reminded her of the way roaches scattered when sprayed with Raid. Lawlessness was the antithesis of reason, mob mentality was evidence enough of that. It was textbook horror.
 “We will only survive if we follow the rules,” Venable emphasized.
 Emily scoffed. Some of Venable’s rules she understood while others were a blatant overreaching of power. She could understand the “no sex” rule to a degree. Copulation could result in the creation of new life which they had no means to sustain, but even the Victorians had condoms and you couldn’t walk into a 7-Eleven without finding a rack of Plan B. Not to mention half the residents were gay which made her rules pointless.
 “Rules are the basis of order,” Venable said, clearly addressing her despite staring at the wall above them, “unless you find yourself to be above the rules? Too   special  for them to apply?”
 She hadn’t a moment to voice her thoughts, quickly distracted by the army of wardens that quickly began to fill the room. They all watched with bated breath as The Fist bent down to whisper in Mead’s ear, her lip twitching and eyes flitting to the ground as she gave the other woman her full attention.
 “There’s a problem.”
 Those 3 words were enough to break Venable’s gloating, head snapping to the side like Coco’s had a moment ago. They all watched the pair, unsure of who to keep a better watch on — Venable or Mead.
 “We’ve detected a spike in the background radiation, centered in this room,” Mead informed her boss.
 Gallant was quick to point fingers to the new pair, whatever empathy he had shown with Andre gone like the wind as he moved from them as if they had the plague, “It’s them! They just came from the outside!”
 “No!” The girl exclaimed, shaking her head vigorously and sitting forward in her chair, knuckles white around the wooden arms, “No! We were checked when we got here! We’re clean!”
 She looked to Emily for aid, brown eyes wide and pupils dilated. Her eyes glimmered with confusion and panic, searching for an unspoken question. Emily’s brows knitted and she bit her lip, eyes flickering between the girl before her and the wardens preparing a device that looked like a microphone attached to a larger box.
 “No,” the boy echoed, “we went through decontamination.”
 His eyes also went to Emily as he continued to speak, begging for her to understand, “we were cleared.”
 Emily opened her mouth but could find nothing to reassure them. Mead addressed the room before Emily could utter a word. “Place your hands on the table… and don’t.  Move .”
 Shaking her head at the girl, Emily did as she was told. This hadn’t happened before. She didn’t know what to expect. As the device clicked from her left, she edged her pinky towards her knife. It wasn’t sharp. It didn’t have to be sharp to cut through jello. With enough pressure, it could cut through skin. The rest of the room faded away as she kept her eyes on The Fists' hands, a second device in her hands as well. Emily’s heart hammered with each step closer.
 “Radioactive contamination,” Mead spoke, devices crinkling like static as they hovered over each person, “is a grave risk to our  entire  community.”
 The Fist, a giant of a woman with blonde hair pulled back from her face, towered above Emily when she was standing. Sitting down made her feel like a child in the presence of a giant. She held her breath as she felt the device get closer, clicking sounds falling silent as soon as it came above her hand. The Fist repeated the motion a few times more, making Emily’s heart go haywire in her chest, before moving on to the new arrival next to her, the clicking resuming once more.
 “The clean rule is there to protect all of us,” Mead continued, now going over the boy who sat stiff as a board, eyes following the woman’s every move, “A  single stray gamma particle can cause skin lesions. Your DNA breaks apart, your body disintegrates. You’ll   wish  you died in the blast.”
 The residents weren’t sure what to make of her speech. It wasn’t as if any of them graduated with a degree in radiology. They had learned it in high-school, sure, but that was ages ago… before there was colored TV for some of them.
 “But someone here decided,” Mead went on, circling the table for a second round of testing, “that their  individual needs  were more important.”
 Emily tensed once more as the stick was waved around her, Mead pausing momentarily to look down at the box she held in her hand to see if it had somehow turned off. Finding nothing, she continued. “Someone went outside. Touched something  dirty .”
 The room was holding their breaths. They all knew they were innocent, but didn’t trust their companions as far as they could throw them. Their gaze followed the device, then to the person next to them, then to the person in front of them. They searched for a sign of guilt. It was easier to point fingers when someone looked shifty.
 “Makes me sick to think that this person,” Mead spit as she made it to gallant, “to risk contaminating all—”
 A wild crackling filled the room. They all jumped in their seats, eyes focusing on the hairdresser. Emily’s heart leapt into her throat, paralyzed as the vultures began circling, donned in leather and stronger than any of them could hope to be.
 “No,” The man said after a moment, shaking his finger as he looked to the Wardens, “nononono. That’s a mistake because the  only  thing I’ve touched is Coco’s hair.”
 The Fist stood over Coco and shook her head. Mead gave the final order, voice lacking any pity, “she’s clean. You’re dirty.
 The wardens grabbed at Gallant, claws latching onto him as he began to struggle.
 “No!” He cried, “this is impossible! That machine is wrong!”
 Fingers dug into his shoulder and Gallant cried out in pain, dragged to his feet and across the floor. The warden closest to him placed him in a choke-hold, Gallant letting out a fearful sob as he clawed at the man’s arm. Evie stood, chair screeching across the floor as she reached out towards her grandson with trembling hands.
 “This is outrageous! Stop! Please, stop! Bring him back!”
 Coco gasped and let out a cry, hands moving to cover her face as her eyes welled with tears. The girl beside Emily looked between herself and the boy in front of her, chest rising and falling rapidly as she began to hyperventilate.
 Gallant scream pierced the air, “Evie!”
 The crackling filled the room once more. In their panic, they had failed to realize Mead making her way towards Andre and Stu. The couple could only stare at each other, the seconds dragging on like hours.
 “No way!” Stu chanted, refusing to look away from Andre, “No! No way!”
 “No,” Andre sobbed, reaching out towards the man and trying to pry him from the grasp of the warden pulling him away. He was thrown away with a shove.
 “Get your hands off me!” Stu screamed, another warden now going to carry him by his feet.
 Mead’s voice rang out from the chaos, followed swiftly by the marching of footsteps.
 “Take them to the decontamination room!”
 They could hear the groans of their fellow residents echoing down the hall. The sounds resonated long after the steel doors had closed.
Emily reached out for the hand of the girl next to her. Her face was frozen in a gasp, eyes wide with terror. Her hand rested on hers which still sat on the table. She squeezed back and held on for dear life.
                   ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  For once the saloon was quiet. Evie had gone to bed. Emily currently sat next to a crying Andre, Dinah opposite her. He hadn’t been able to stop crying since dinner, now unable to do more than hiccup.
 “How could he have been contaminated,” He sobbed, a horrible epiphany crossing his mind as he turned to Emily, “do you think they—?
 Emily gave him a look, “Did you forget Gallant’s little hand-squeeze during dinner? He was coming on to you, not Stu.”
 Andre had a fleeting smile before anxiety overtook him once more.
 “What we need to do now,” Dinah said, running a hand up and down her son’s back, “is make sure Stu comes back safe.”
 Her words were less than comforting, Andre shoving away her arm and staring at her with an emotion Emily couldn’t quite place… somewhere between distress and anger.
 “Why wouldn’t he be safe?” he demanded, looking to the brunette when his mother offered no response. Emily opened her mouth, hoping something would pop into her head, but she was at a loss for words. She couldn’t reassure him of anything. It would be a lie.
 The man scoffed, stepping back and shaking his head, “I can’t believe you.”
 He turned on his heels, breath hitching once more as another fit of sobs threatened to take over him. Why Stu? Why not them? Of all the residents Stu was the least deserving of—
 Emily rose, hand held out to stop him, “Andre—”
 A gentle hand was placed on her shoulder. Dinah took a step around her, hand trailing down her purple-clothed arm until she held her hand, the other coming to rest on top of it.
 “Let me talk to him,” the woman tried to reassure, the events clearly have shaken her as much as Stu.
 Emily pressed her lips together and nodded, pulling back and watching the woman hurry towards her son, heels clicking down the hall. The door clanged shut behind her and silence filled the room.
 … but only for a moment.
 “What’s going to happen to me if they find out Gallant is —” Coco started to ramble, “I mean I  was  the only reason he was here in the first place.”
 “You were clean,” The brown-haired boy pointed out, face twisting in confusion.
 “Well, I know that!” Coco exclaimed, turning on the couch to face him, “but who’s to say there won’t be a  second investigation. I mean there had to be a   reason   they were tainted.”
 She went quiet for a moment, hands held out in front of her as if she was having a revelation, “oh my gosh! If they kill Gallant who’s going to do my hair?”
 Emily sighed and sat next to the new girl who was wringing her hands and staring into the fire.
 “I never did ask your names,” Emily noted, looking to the girl and the boy.
 “Timothy,” He said with a nod of his head.
 The girl was pulled from her thoughts, turning from the fire and to the people behind her, “Emily.”
 Emily chuckled, “You’re joking.”
 “What?”
 “It’s the end of the world and I can’ escape the fate of having a basic girl name.”
 A smile curled at the other Emily’s lips, then a laugh, “really?”
 Emily extended a hand, “Hi, Emily. I’m Emily.”
 “There’s two of you now?” Coco groaned.
 “I was named after my grandmother,” The other Emily said, taking her hand and giving it a shake, “you?”
 “My parents looked in a baby book and picked a ‘less common’ girl name. 21 years later and there’s at least three Emily’s in each one of my classes.”
 “God, this is going to be confusing,” Coco sighed, pressing her fingers to her nose in a praying motion, “Oh! I know! Emily 1 and Emily 2… no... That’s too wordy.”
 “Middle names?” Timothy asked.
 “No way in hell,” The two replied.
 “I can always go by ‘Em’,” she said, “god knows I’m used to it by now.”
 “M?” Coco asked, “that’s original.”
 “Well, we can’t all be named after a brand of cereal.”
 “I was named after Coco Chanel!” she snapped, turning to Timothy with crocodile tears, “You get it, right?”
 “…yeah?” he answered, an eyebrow quirking up in confusion, “The clothing brand.”
 He looked to the two Emily’s as he spoke like he was part of some hidden camera show. The two could only laugh and shake their heads as he was quickly rounded into another one of Coco’s monologues.
 “My parents named me Coco because they knew I was destined to make it big. So it was only natural that I…”
 Timothy looked ready to face nuclear winter. His guilt over the previous dinner altercations made him feel guilty for wanting to run away, but the boy always had a hard time saying, “no.” The Emily’s watched on, sparing him pity-filled glances when he looked to them for help.
 “So did you pay your way in here or are you here for your  superior  genetics?” Emily asked.
 “Genetics,” Emily… Em replied, “I was supposed to be on the east coast but someone paid for me to be transported all the way out here.”
 “Who?”
 She shrugged, “no idea. Some rich snob wanted their dog to go with them… at least that’s what Venable tells me.”
 “I’d hardly call her a  trustful  resource.”
 Em laughed, “That we can agree on.”
 “How long do you think we’ll be here?”
 “More than we have rations for,” Em sighed, reaching for a glass of water, “Fallout could last up to five years and we’ve talked about Chernobyl… but nothing on this scale has ever been recorded.”
 Emily stared blankly ahead and nodded, trying to recall all she had learned about the matter in school, “we could be here for 30 years… maybe more.”
 “Sorry,” Em offered, “anyone here can tell you — I’m not one to speak to for optimism or reassurance.”
 “No,” The other girl shook her head, “I’d rather blatant honestly than pretty lies.”
 “If we had anything more than water I’d toast to that.”
 Emily laughed and shook her head. She reached for a glass of her own and held it up.
 “Let’s toast anyway.”
 Em smiled and leaned her glass forward, a dull clinking sound filling the air.
 “What were you doing?” Em asked, leaning back and taking a sip of water, “before the bombs hit?”
 “Protesting. It sounds minuscule now… climate change, minimum wage.”
 “Everything is minuscule in the presence of death.”
 “Poetic.”
 “I sure hope so,” Em jested, “or all the money I wasted on an English Major was worthless.”
 Emily laughed, “Is that what you were doing before the bomb’s dropped?”
 “Nah… I was at home… enjoying summer. I was working on our campus’ literary magazine and selling art prints online as a side-hustle.”
 Em shook her head, silence sitting for a moment before Emily spoke.
 “I don’t know what to do with myself now.”
 “I don’t think any of us do, but at least we’re not alone.”
 “I wouldn’t call this particularly good company,” Emily admitted.
 “It’s not,” Em blatantly admitted, earning a short laugh from her companion, “but you and timothy seem alright.”
 “And you?”
 “Well…” Em said, side eying Coco who was still avidly speaking without a sign of ever stopping, “I’m no influencer.”
 Emily snorted and shook her head, “that may be for the best.”
                            ------------------------------------------------
“All I’m saying is Stu was boring and using up our food, and that lesions won’t work with my complexion.”
Em rolled her eyes and looked to Emily who once again sat beside her as Coco’s tirade went on. The blond-haired woman once again was patting at her hair like she was on the red carpet. They looked to Timothy across from them who just sat looking blankly ahead of him. Em smiled at shook her head, not able to blame the man for pretending he was anywhere else but here. If not for the mandatory cocktail hour and communal meals, Em would have stayed as far away from the others as possible.
Days had passed since Gallant and Stu had been forced into decontamination. Gallant refused to speak of the incident and… well… they knew where it got Stu. One would have liked to have said that Coco had shown some respect for the deceased, but the farthest she got was initial shock followed by contempt towards their fallen comrade.
“Fuck you,” Andre spat, murder in his eyes, “I hope they come for you next.”
“If they don’t,” Em noted, Coco’s eyes glaring into her own, “I will.”
She gaped at her, nose curling as her expression turned into one of disgust, “Is that a threat?”
“A promise.”
Emily gave her a look like a mother trying to get their child to behave among strangers.
It’s not worth it!” She hissed under her breath. Em was far too annoyed to pay her any mind. She could forgive selfishness and vanity, but her complete lack of sympathy for those in pain? It didn’t matter if it was genuine. All she had to do was shut up, give Andre space to grieve.
Lucky for Coco, their jail-keepers arrived at the table before Em could follow out her threat. Venable’s cane sounded like the tik of a clock with each step she took, reminding the brunette of a horror story her friends and herself would tell around Halloween.
“Nobody is coming for anyone,” Mead told them as they both rounded the table to their respective seats at the head of the table, “unless you break the rules.”
She looked to Em, “which includes murder.”
Em paused as she took a sip of water, raising a brow at Coco, “I never said anything about murder.”
The older woman looked into her lap and shook her head, trying to hide the amused smile threatening to show on her face. Coco scoffed.
“This is harassment!”
“This is a difficult time for everyone,” Venable spoke, failing to address Coco’s claims, “as a small consolation, we have a special treat.”
Em could smell the food before she could see it, the salt and the meat, she could taste it in her mouth without even touching it. She felt like a dog, smelling things with such detail she had never been able to notice before. It was incredible what desperation could do to the body. The whole table buzzed with excitement, grins brightening faces and hands going to silverware before the food could be set on the table.
Emily was unable to hide her shock, “no cubes tonight?”
Venable’s lips curled into a smile, the expression doing nothing to ease the woman’s continuously angry expression, “enjoy the bonne bouche.”
Bowls clinked together, the Greys hurrying to place food on the table.
“Don’t get used to it.”
“Yes,” Emily sighed beside her, looking over to Em with an expression of relieved joy.
The brunette didn’t care. If she was being honest, she hadn’t exactly paid much attention to the woman’s words after she saw the soup on the food trolley. It was much like a cat seeing a bird at the window, green eyes widening and pupils dilating as if Em had found her true love. While her companions were much more graceful, at least attempting some decorum, Em quickly dug into the meal.
Her mother used to chide her for this as a child, sitting next to her brother at the dinner table and seeing who could finish first. She couldn't explain to the woman that she had to eat fast or else her brother would steal her dessert. Such things didn’t make sense to an adult, but a child’s reasoning was elaborate and honest. For a life so short, every little detail mattered.
Usually, she wasn’t a fan of stew. Something about the floating meat and murky broth didn’t sit right with her. Now she wondered why she didn’t enjoy the delicacy more often. The meat fell apart like well-buttered bread in her mouth, the broth warmed her from the inside out. She could feel it burning down her throat like a shot of Bourbon, somewhat painful but none the less satisfying.
“You think bribing us with a hot meal’s just gonna’ to make everything okay?” Andre asked, voice sore with grief. A white handkerchief flourished with the wave of his hand. It had been somewhere on his person since Stu was pronounced dead. Em was too caught up in her hunger to realize the weight of his words or the sudden stillness of the girl beside her, an unspoken conversation between herself and Timothy. She would take the bribe happily if it meant being spared from the tasteless cube she had become accustomed to. It wouldn’t win her over, but only a fool refused something readily given with no strings attached.
By the time Emily swatted at Em’s arm the brunette had already finished most of the stew, the bottom of her bowl visible through the broth. She sent Emily an irritated glare, gesturing with her hands as she swallowed her last bite.
“What?” she hissed.
Emily only rose her brows and sent a pointed glance towards Timothy. Turning towards him she was meant with an equally suspicious gaze and a shake of the head. With a sigh, she sat back in her chair, looking between the two and waiting for an explanation.
“I think my mouth just had an orgasm,” Coco moaned with a full mouth, quickly shoving more food into her mouth in fear it would turn out to be a cruel mirage. Em looked at her and embarrassment made her flush a pale pink. Is that what she had looked like?
“Andre,” Venable sighed, settling in her seat and arranging her silverware before she took a single bite, “We’re not trying to bribe anyone, but there is something we all need to understand.”
With a thud of her cane on the floor, the residents turned to her like raccoons being caught in a garbage can. Em prepared herself for a show of saintly-hood the uptight woman so adored.
“There is no ‘us’ and ‘them,’ We are in this together,” Venable proclaimed, “No individual is greater than the group. We did what we had to do. This is, quite simply, a tragedy.”
Em held her tongue for once. While Stu and herself hadn’t been close, she respected him more than she respected most of her fellow purples. The old world may have died, but the power games still presided — a strongman was still a strongman even when draped in fine clothes and laced in a corset.
It wasn’t as if any of them were paying her any mind, too enthralled in the smell of salt and meat like Hansel and Gretal in the witch’s house. Dinah sighed as she took another bite.
“Where have you been hiding the meat?”
Venable’s pause waved over Em like a bucket of cold water, the slight twitch of her lip as she looked down at her plate louder and more illuminating than any sermon she had given them. “We have resources… for special occasions.”
Em could only stare at her as she ate, trying to work at the puzzle which was Miss Venable. There were moments where she swore the woman showed regret or perhaps anxiety, but they were small and fleeting. Everyone had a tell, even the most stoic of society. Em just couldn’t figure it out and it drove her up a wall. It felt like she was staring at a brick wall, waiting for it to crumble.
Gallant pulled something out from his mouth, cringing as his teeth dig into something hard. It was white and square, but he couldn’t tell what it was? Gristle? Bone?
“I’ve never tasted anything like it.” He murmured, examining the object further as he twisted it in the light.
“It’s chicken,” Mead told him a bit too insistently.
“That’s not a chicken bone,” Timothy spoke, looking from his untouched bowl to the object the hairdresser was holding. His lips pressed into a thin line. Venable took a spoonful to her lips, then another, and then another.
Andre spoke from the other end of the table, voice wavering as he stared at yet another hard piece which had made his teeth hurt, “tell me this doesn’t look like a finger.”
Em looked to her plate, stomach twisting as she poked at the remains of her meal. A piece of white glimmered to the surface. Damning polite behavior, she reached in with her hand and pulled it out. Her mind went blank as she stared at it, rectangular with two prongs reaching outward from the body. It was a tooth. There was no doubt. Chicken didn’t have teeth. A frog gathered at the back of her throat, threatening to leap from her mouth.
“Oh, Jesus Christ,” Andre sputtered out, breath coming out in wheezing gasps as he flew back from the table shrieking, “The stew is Stu!”
The table erupted in panic. Gallant spit out whatever was in his mouth, leaving a dripping dark stain on the tablecloth. Andre wailed and Coco shrieked to a Grey named Mallory to make her throw up. Em could only stare at the near-empty bowl in front of her, the reality not quite sitting with her. Morbid questions filled her mind. It had tasted like… she didn’t know what it tasted like other than meat. Salty, maybe? Sweet?
A firm hand squeezed her own, Emily once again there to pull her from a spiral.
“You didn’t know.”
Amongst the screaming, the gagging, and the retching Venable sat, unmoved by the fires of fear rising around her. She didn’t smile, didn’t frown, didn’t show any reaction at all.
“For heaven’s sake,” she spoke with the same amount of annoyance she always addressed them with, a touch of boredom in her tone “Don’t be ridiculous. There are lines which can never be crossed.”
Something was glinting in Venable’s eyes, something that Em had seen many times before but could never properly place. The woman looked to Mead, “not eating people is off the first rank.”
Em’s voice sounded hollow as it left her, “Yet it is always the first taboo to be broken among the desperate.”
The thought of cannibalism wasn’t what alarmed Em. Cannibalism was deeply ingrained in human history — from burial rituals to a final stand against starvation. No. What frightened her was realizing she would do it again in an instant if it meant her survival. A fire burned in her as she looked to Venable, sitting there with a smug glow of victory. She had hated Venable before, but this made her blood boil at the sight of her. A revelation she did not want had been forced upon her and Venable’s eyes glinted as they met her own.
Her message was clear: Don’t rebel or you’ll be next.

Phylax Avengers x oc Prologue

Mrs. Bethany Lancaster watched her four older children as they ran out of the house. Nora would watch the three little ones and it would give her some peace and quiet as long as the baby stayed asleep. Thirty solid minutes with no disasters was a small miracle. It gave her time to catch up on housework, which she had lacked since baby number five, Zach, arrived. She checked on the three month old before turning back to the chores at hand.
She had the most recent pile of laundry folded and stacked the only thing left was matching the socks. That was when she heard the scream.
“Momma!”  Beth looked up to see her 6 year old daughter, Bennett racing towards the house. Her face red and there were obvious tear tracks. Panic. That was what was in her daughter’s face. She ran to the yard meeting her half way. The girl was crying so hard that understanding her words was near impossible. “Fitzy, Fitzy. Momma...Fitzy.” Beth scooped the crying girl in her arms and headed farther into the open fields. “Nora, Leo,” she called for her two oldest children.
Bennett buried her head in her mother’s shoulder. “Fitzy.”
Bethany’s heart raced as she ran towards the distant call returned by her 15-year-old daughter. “Momma. Help it’s Fitz.”
The sight that met Bethany Lancaster’s eyes was one that every mother fears. A small body lay in the creek, blood soaked through his short blonde hair. His face pale and lips blue. Bethany handed the crying Bennett to Nora and knelt by the boy. “What happened?” She felt for a pulse and then listened for a breath but found neither.
“I don’t know. We were playing in the field. Fitz wanted a turn with the kite but Leo had it. The next thing I remember we were here and Fitz was like this.” The older girl took deep breaths trying to calm herself to take care of her sister.
Bethany began the process of CPR knowing it was no use. She sent Leo to the house to call 911. Blood slid down the creek bed as she tried to pump life back into her young son.
“Fitzy!” Bennett cried, kicking Nora sharply in the leg so the older girl would drop her. As soon as she hit the ground the girl scrambled to her twin brother. “Fitzy, wake up,” her tears dripped to his cheeks, “Fitzy!”
When the ambulance arrived it was too late. Bennett cried in her mother’s arms pleading for her brother to get up. Nora had returned to the house shortly after Leo and was caring for Zachary.
Bennett’s mother clung tightly to the girl. Small bloody handprints appeared on the fabric of her shirt as the girl fought to reach her brother as the coroner zipped the body bag. Fitz’s face disappearing from their view. The small girl went weak in her mother’s arms. Sobs wracked her body as she cried. Her brother’s name came out as only a whimper. Bethany Lancaster allowed her first tear then holding her daughter as her son was taken away.
Frost coated the ground of the small park closest to Stark tower. Normally Bennett would take her bike out of town to a small nature trail nearby, today there wasn’t time. The steady pounding of her sneakers hitting the pavement was Bennett's sole focus. After a nightmare an early morning run was soothing. The cold morning air brushed against her face, turning her cheeks and nose rosy. Her breath froze in the air in front of her. 18 years had passed since that day and she still felt the loss. If she managed to outrun her memories during the light of day, they always caught back up to her in her sleep.
Back at Stark Tower again Bennett made her way to the gym. She pushed her short hair back out of her face, and made her way to the heavy bag. The bag buckled under the weight of her first few punches. The rough leather grated against her knuckles as she tried to bleed out the last of her nightmare.
For a year and a half Bennett had held a job in security at Stark Industries, as Tony Stark’s personal bodyguard. She had been with Pepper through every second of the incident in Afghanistan. She had helped Tony weather the introduction of Ironman and subsequent fall out.
Tony was the first big job Bennett had in her field of choice. She had applied for numerous other positions at companies around the city but was passed over because she was too young or inexperienced. Today marked her 24th birthday.
She was qualified for the job. Top of her class at the academy, marksmanship was in the top 5%, hand to hand combat top 3%, surveillance and observation top 7%. The problem came in because she didn’t look 24. She didn’t even look 20 most days. On a really good day the blonde could pass for 21 but most days about 16 or 17. Resembling a teenager was not exactly intimidating. The clothes Pepper bought, and Tony paid for, helped.  Pepper insisted though, that this was an asset. It made it easier for her to fade into the background. Unassuming and nonthreatening. So when she selected Bennett’s work attire, it was professional but always carried a young, carefree air to it. Usually in the form of colored Converse, lightly distressed jeans, or a graphic tee under her button down or jacket.
Tabloids had been fun the first couple months after she was noticed. According to those reporters Bennett was Tony Stark's love child from his wild youth. The papers had new stories released every week. "Birth mothers" were lining up to back their stories. There were a few similarities between Bennett and Tony. Skin tone, brown eyes, although his were a darker brown than hers, and a few other overlapping "roguish features", to quote Tony. But past that nothing. The women claiming to be her mother, ranged from hispanic to Irish, from waitresses to swimsuit models. Each story was more ridiculous than the last. Simple math would disprove every one of the women, they were all too young. As would Bennett’s nearly platinum blonde hair. Seriously not one paper thought to find a blonde.
 Quick punch combos rocked the bag on it's chains. The bag caved around her heel as she sunk a kick in. The bag was inviting. Granting a release. The anger and fear. The nightmares, the memories. A release for all of it. Bennett poured them all into the bag where they would stay buried in the sand contained in the canvas. She worked the bag over and over, punch after punch, blow after blow. The combinations becoming more deadly as she worked.
Tony entered the room watching the girl work and the bag rocked on it’s chains. He watched not wanting to interrupt her. Her fist slammed hard into the bag and he winced. She seemed to deflate holding on to the bag. Letting out an exhausted breath she whispered, "Happy birthday, Fitz"
He gave her another moment heart breaking slightly at the sight. Opening the door and shutting it again Tony approached her as if he had just gotten there. "As my bodyguard, are you not supposed to be aware of your surroundings? I mean if I can sneak in on you anyone can." He crossed the room towards her. "You gonna talk about it this time?"
"I am supposed to be aware of threats, I would hardly classify you as a threat," she walked over taking the bottle from his hand for a drink. The liquid had barely touched her tongue when she spit it out, gagging. "What on earth are you drinking?" She opened the bottle giving the substance a tentative sniff, it was thick and green.
"It's, uh, protein shake from one of those MMA magazines you get."
"Why is it green?" The blonde sniffed it again, wrinkling her nose at the smell.
“Kelp?” Tony took a moment to answer.
“Your answer to that shouldn’t be a question,” she quipped, handing the bottle back and turned to get water from the small fridge.
Tony nodded towards her hand, “you’re bleeding.”
She looked down examining the knuckles. Sure enough the skin was broken on the first two knuckles of each hand and the rest were smeared with blood. “It’s probably just a little scratch.”
He gave her a disbelieving look. “You never even let me look at the bag without wrapping my hands.”
“It’s fine, Boss. It looks worse than it is,” she shrugged it off. “Go grab your mouthpiece and meet me on the mats.” Bennett headed into the locker room to grab her mouthpiece and take care of her hands. She knew better, but the rough material of the bag had felt good. Pain always brought relief. Physical pain was manageable.
Turning the water on she waited the few seconds it would take for it to heat. She ran her hands under the water scrubbing them clean. The water diluted the blood. Bennett squeezed her eyes shut as her nightmare rushed back. The onslaught of images making her slightly nauseous. Wiping her hands dry the skin looked new. It had knit itself back perfectly. That’s why it had escaped her notice, something small like that was less bothersome than a mosquito bite. There is no telling how many times the skin had broken for them to bleed that much. In the most extreme case so far her healing factor was effective enough to heal 12 gunshot wounds simultaneously. So a busted knuckle from the heavy bag was something she wasn’t worried about.
 Wrapping her knuckles she returned to the gym, mouthpiece in hand. Many things are socially acceptable now.  Many things the government has legalized. They tolerated Ironman. There were rumors of Captain America being found. Talk of other survivors of genetic experiments. Negotiations for the rights of Inhumans. One thing that had not been changed, that had not been legalized, had not been repealed. The Mutant Registration Act.
Mutation was still seen as an abomination, an affront to nature. Mutants were closely monitored if they managed not to be thrown in jail. To date only three mutants from the registration had not been incarcerated for any length of time, and only because their mutations were purely cosmetic. Horns and tails posed no real threat to humanity's safety. It would be safe to say Tony didn't know about her abilities. No one knew, not even her parents. She intended to keep it that way. She pulled on her fingerless gloves and headed back into the gym.
Ground fighting was the order of the day. After reviewing some of the pins and chokes they had worked on they began to grapple.
 Round 1: 2 minutes, submission, guillotine, Bennett.
Round 2: 45 seconds, submission, arm bar, Bennett
Round 3: 3 minutes, submission, Darce choke, Bennett.
It continued for seven rounds. Some of the rounds could have been shorter but Bennett liked to play a bit. The third round for instance had taken so much time because Bennett wanted to win with the Darce choke. Other times she just drug the fight out to make Tony work harder. Tony got close a few times. After each round the blonde showed him how to lock in the choke to prevent escape.
Training with Tony was a good warm up for the day and Bennett truly loved teaching him. He didn't really need it. He had the suit. Hand to hand combat was kinda obsolete against that.
"Okay," he coughed, tapping the mat to signal Bennett to let go. "I'm done. Besides we have a full day." He stretched to work out the kinks in his spine from the fights.
Bennett pulled up the schedule on her phone, the Stark tech projecting the application off the screen for her. "We have 30 minutes to clean up, eat, and get to the board meeting."
He nodded drinking from the bottle of green goo. "Thanks, kid. Next time I am going to win one." She chuckled, pulling her gloves off before heading back upstairs to change.
 The meeting seemed to drag on and on. No matter how many of these things she sat through Bennett never could find it in herself to follow along. The phone buzzed in her pocket. A new text.
Tony: kid, watch this.
A few seconds passed and one of the board members grew noticeably irritated before he swatted the air. Upon closer inspection Bennett could see a small black object darting around the man’s head. Bennett would have simply assumed it to be a fly except for the small red light blinking from it. Almost indiscernible.
Tony flicked his fingers across his phone and the small object darted at the man again. It was a drone. The man grew more distracted by the second. Bennett and Tony bit back their laughter.
“Tony,” Pepper snapped, “do you have anything to contribute?”
“Uh,...no I think you covered it rather eloquently,” he tapped his screen once more before shoving the phone back in his pocket. Bennett watched the drone zip away probably to some charging dock across the building.
“If no one has any new business I think we can adjourn,” Pepper dismissed the board members with a smile. As the last man stepped out she turned a glare toward the two. Focusing on Tony she spoke “do you think this is a game, I am trying to run a company here, your company. You could at least pretend to care.”
 Pepper dragged Bennett and Tony upstairs. If Tony kept this up he would run the company into the ground. He needed to take his responsibilities seriously. Happy met them in the kitchen  where lunch was being served. JARVIS with the help of a bot or two had prepared a salad with grilled chicken.
Bennett inwardly groaned kelp shakes and now salad. Tony was on a health kick, which meant it was time to stock up on junk food.
Pepper excused herself when she received a call from one of the overseas investors during lunch leaving Tony, Bennett, and Happy alone for a moment. "Tonight's the night, right? Are you sure you wanna do this kid?" Tony leaned back in his seat trying to make his voice sound casual.
Bennett’s face lit in a smile. "I think so. Emily and I have been together for two years. Our lives fit together seamlessly. We have talked out our plans for the future together. Almost never fight." She chuckled lightly. "Everyone says that proposing is nerve wracking. But I thought it all through and planned it out. Honestly I'm not nervous at all. We fit too well together. She's gonna say yes." Bennett took the small box from her pocket examining the ring.
Tony held out his hand and she passed the box over. Tony nodded his approval before handing the ring to Happy.
 "Not a bad choice, kid. You want me to drive you tonight. I could get the limo."
Bennett tucked the ring back in her pocket. "No I got it. Gonna take one of Tony’s cars and pick her up, take her to her favorite restaurant. That I can pass off as birthday privileges. Limo would be a bit over the top. Might tip her off."
"Public proposal? At the restaurant? Pretty gutsy." Tony quipped.
"No, she wouldn't want that kind of attention" Bennett shook her head, "a walk in the park after, to a spot I know she loves. I'll ask her there." Bennett could see it all in her mind from the bench by the lake to the smile on Emily’s face. Tonight was going to change everything. Tonight would be the start of a new life, a better life.
Happy's phone buzzed. "Sorry, Pepper needs me to pick up someone at the airport. If I don't make it back in time, good luck, kid." He smiled before running out the door.
"Benn are you really sure about this? Not a doubt in your mind that Emily is the one?" Tony wore a serious expression. "You're young. Not many people find their soulmate at 24."
“I didn’t,” Bennett smirked, ”we met when I was 22."
Tony's expression grew more serious if possible."Benn. This is a big decision. I don't want to see you heartbroken if things don't work down the road. Just make sure you have thought this through. Does Emily really make you happy?"
The blonde gave his words careful consideration before replying. "I think so. I mean we've had rocky places sure. Everyone does, but I think she makes me happy."
Tony locked his gaze with hers "marriage is a lifetime thing."
"Who are you and what have you done with Tony?" He didn't even smirk at the attempted joke. Bennett let out a deep sigh "I know it's a lifetime thing. I am prepared to sacrifice a lifetime if she needs me to.” She let the silence hang for a few seconds before allowing a smirk to slide in place, “Pepper is gone for the day and Happy is out so...Smash bros showdown." Tony didn't move immediately but the corner of his lips turned up. " Come on, Boss. It will get my mind off things."
He gave a sigh before a genuine smile spread across his features. "Alright, best of 75. If I win I get your bike for a week if you win you can use my suit."
"No safety mode?" Bennett cocked one brow in question.
"Weapons hot." He held out his hand which she in turn took shaking it.
"Deal."
Several hours later Pepper walked into the common area to Tony's shouts of victory and Bennett’s groans of defeat. "The bike is mine for the week." He crowed.
"Yeah, yeah," She scowled at the tv screen “you can use the Harley or the Honda this week.”
“No I get the Ducati,” he insisted.
“The original deal said you get my bike for a week not which one. You should be more specific next time, I have seven.” She smirked.
"Well, well." They both jumped at the new voice spinning to see Pepper standing in the doorway. "I see you two got a lot done today."
"It was bonding time, really." Tony explained.
Bennett shot a cheeky grin towards the older woman shrugging, "while the cat's away…"
"Obviously." A soft smile played on her lips even as she tried to hide it. "Bennett, don't you have to be somewhere in an hour?"
She tapped the screen on her phone, her Ducati lit up in the background as she checked the time. "Crap. Yeah thanks Pep." Jumping up from the couch the girl pressed a kiss to Pepper’s cheek before heading to the doorway.
"Are you both coming back tonight? I have a few things saved for the occasion. Wanted to celebrate a little with you, both of you.” Tony explained.
“More than likely. But Tony: no party! If you guys want to say “hi” and stuff fine, but no extras. No party.” Bennett set the rules for Tony’s “celebration”.
"Alright. Be safe and have fun tonight" Tony wrapped her in a tight hug. "Good luck, kid."
“Thanks, boss." Pepper pulled the girl in for one more hug as she rushed to her room.
Bennett pulled up to Emily’s apartment at 6:30 sharp. Knocking at the door she rocked back on her heels as she waited for Emily to answer, a bouquet of roses in hand.
“Bennett!” Emily opened the door with a broad smile. She leaned forward pulling the blonde into a kiss. “Those for me?” She asked, pulling away for a second.
“Who else would they be for?” Bennett pecked her lips again.
She took the roses, “I’ll just put these in water right quick,” she slipped inside pushing the door closed before Benn could follow. Seconds later she came back out, “ready to go?” Her smile was bright as she took Bennett’s hand, heading to the car.
Bennett opened her door for her, before climbing in the driver's seat. They drove and talked, laughing occasionally. The blonde couldn’t keep the smile off her face.
The night started at an art gallery. Emily led Bennett through the gallery pointing out her favorite pieces. They talked over the exhibits as they went. Emily gushed over a large metal sculpture in the middle of the museum. She rattled on talking about lines and angles to convey the artist’s meaning. Benn nodded along and agreed when she was asked what she thought. Her only real thought about the piece though was the welds were crap.
Bennett lagged a bit behind as they came across an exhibit of statues from Greece. Athena, Artemis, and Apollo were displayed alongside sculptures of gorgons, minotaurs, and chimaeras. Emily tugged her along to finish up the last few exhibits.
When they pulled up to the restaurant Bennett quickly hopped out of the car, rushing around the front of the car to open Emily’s door. Bennett held out a hand and Emily took it. Her hand resting in the blonde’s made Benn feel as if Emily trusted her with her whole world. It was a responsibility the young bodyguard was happy to take on.
“This really isn’t necessary, Bennie,” she tucked her hand around Bennett’s arm, “but thank you.”
Dinner was slightly more expensive than she had originally planned but for tonight it would be worth it. Next stop was the nature park. They walked through the park under the stars hand in hand. The little box bounced in her pocket as they neared the spot.
Bennett took in the night sky. North star was straight ahead. Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. A story of jealousy. Zeus’ wife Hera was jealous of Callisto after Zeus fell in love with her. So Hera changed her into a bear. Callisto was hunted for years. Zeus and Callisto had a son named Arcas. When he grew Arcas became a great hunter, he was moments away from unknowingly killing his mother but Zeus interfered. Sending them into the sky creating the two constellations.
“Bennie,” Emily pulled her from her thoughts. “Bennie babe, what is it about them that you find so fascinating?” She gestured towards the heavens.
“Everything. The stories, history, science…”
Smiling Emily pulled her girlfriend around to face her. She beamed at the blonde, “you always have your head in the clouds, aren’t there more interesting things down here on the ground.” She pulled Bennett in close for a kiss, wrapping her arms around her neck deepening the kiss.
Bennett pulled away after a moment, leading Emily further into the park.
Bennett steeled herself.  “Em, I wanted to talk to you about something.”
“Of course. I wanted to talk to you about something too,” she followed happily.
“You go ahead,” Bennett said, “what did you want to talk about?”
“No, no, go ahead, it can wait,” she threaded her fingers through Bennett’s.
“Well,” they came to the spot by the edge of the lake. Taking a deep breath Bennett began her speech “Emily, we have been together for two years now. You helped me adapt to New York, out of the security of my college campus. New York is quite a bit bigger than I am used to,” a grin spread across Bennett’s face, one side slightly higher than the other. Lopsided.
Emily placed her hand on Bennett’s cheek leveling out her smile “Yeah, your little “no where” Texas is a bit tiny. Population of what, 23?”
“That wasn’t the population, that was the size of my graduating class,” Bennett gave her an indignant look. “Give me some credit.” Emily laughed. “I couldn’t have made it this far without you, and I don’t want to spend any of my future without you by my side. So Emily, will you marry me?” Bennett pulled the ring from her pocket and waited for her answer.
Bennett parked the car in the garage, killing the engine. She walked in the living area to see Tony, Pepper, and Happy all waiting. Champagne on ice. She let out a long sigh, there was no way to avoid them.
Tony was grinning from ear to ear when she entered, “hey kid, how did it go?” He looked over her shoulder. “Where’s Emily?”
The girl plastered a smile on her face. “I...not as planned.” she ran her hand through her hair, brushing her bangs behind her ear only for them to fall back in her face, too short to stay tucked.
“What do you mean?” Pepper was concerned.
“Turns out we...don’t want exactly the same things. Her future and mine... there’s this other girl, Madison. Emily has been with her for most of our relationship.” They were all dumb struck. She pulled the box from her pocket, setting it on the coffee table in front of the couch. “Guess I will have to figure out the return policy for that in the morning.” She gave the others a half hearted smile. “I think I am going to bed. Good night.” Apparently Tony was right, no one finds their soulmate at 24.
AN: won’t leave many of these. First I don’t own Marvel or their characters just Benn and her story.
Second give me any feedback or ideas you have on this story. Any critic is welcome. It is a slowburn as far as the romance aspect goes but it will get there and there is plenty of other stuff in the meantime.
Hope you enjoyed this introduction to Bennett and my story. Ch1 should be up in a week.

Fem! Soukoku A/B/O
I am just sadpacito because of EU copyright law so allow me to shower you in some beautiful soft soft omegaverse hc that I had been talking about with @no-longer-tainted for days now uwu
Please also read this beautiful fic by her as well for a better overview of what tf I am talking about! Its a piece of god damn art that even Van Gogh cries over!
Also we decided to change some of the things within fem! A/B/O, for example instead of female alphas growing a dick, they have saliva that contains the fertilizer...thingy...yeah so oral sex and tongue does the deal here uwu
Like any other female alphas, Chuuya has a cup of b while Dazai is a cup d, thanks to omegas having curvy natural figures.
Female Alpha’s can increase their body heat to make their omega’s feel safe and sound.
Some Omega’s can have extremely irregular heats as well.
So female alphas and Omegas have their first heat later than the males, around 18 or 19. While Chuuya’s heat at 18 was pretty ok and Dazai helping her through, Dazai’s heat came later than any other omega girls. It was at her 22.
Chuuya had her first heat after a week of her birthday. Dazai was just lucky enough to be in her apartment to get her through. (NSFW will be soon under the cut)
Dazai didn’t mind being Chuuya’s mate once they had their feelings and emotions sorted out and had contently start dating.
 So on Dazai’s 18th birthday, Chuuya was ready, so was Dazai. Blankets, boxs of chocolate and protein bars, canned crabs, energy drinks and chocolate milk, ready to go. But no, the heat didn’t come. Not even the following week, or the week after.
They weren’t surprised when the heat didn’t come after 9 months. However, they were ready again when she had turned 19 but no, not this year. Similarly, not even next year when she was 20 or the next next year when Dazai was 21 or 22.
At one point Dazai thought, perhaps it was because of her unhealthy eating habits, while Chuuya started to blame her own heats affecting Dazai’s (which is not possible but she was just worried for her girl uwu).
Things started to calm down, untill during the winter, they decide to go to a ski resort to spend their holiday.
It was cool and all till Dazai began to act weirdly once they had came in the hotel room after the second day of skiing. When Chuuya pressed her hands on Dazai’s forehead, her temperature was rising yet the thermometer said otherwise.
Soon Dazai started to blabber shits and lose her mind. Panicking, Chuuya decided to ring Kouyou.
When the older woman had picked her phone up, Dazai was already moaning for Chuuya and their entire hotel room was filled with Dazai’s soft rose like scent.
Chuuya can’t even breath in the room, its just so stiffy with Dazai’s scent. The shorter girl just whispers, “Ane- san..” To which Kouyou replies without a hesitant, “Dazai is on heat?”
Chuuya’s stomach is feeling Dazai’s heat too but she has no idea what to do. Kouyou asks how Dazai is doing.
“Heat? more like dying if anything fucking heck.” “Chuuya! Language! and if you say that does that mean its all good?”
Chuuya groans and Kouyou doesn’t tease her anymore. The older woman then instructs her to carry out everything as usual bedroom time but then also reminds her to take extra care when she does oral and reminds her to be gentler and softer since it’s Dazai first heat.
NSFW AND MORE SOFTER STUFF UNDER THE CUT UWU
Chuuya almost throws the phone when she finds Dazai nearly biting her arm’s scent glands off when she started to become even more restless.
She quickly grabs all of the extra blanket in the hotel cabinet and just throws them randomly everywhere to somewhat make it look like a nest. Also throwing some of hers and Dazai’s stuff in the nest too.
With shaky fingers, she struggled to unbutton Dazai’s tops but as soon as it was gone, she began to kiss every inch of Dazai and bite her scent glands on her neck to sooth her down.
Whispering soft words, Chuuya kissed and licked every inch of Dazai. Biting on her scent glands and marking her with her scent so that other alphas can’t lay a single finger on her.
Dazai seemed to calm down but for Chuuya it felt like Dazai had gone totally crazy over the heat. Not wanting to risk, Chuuya runs her hand down Dazai’s panties and isn’t surprised when she finds it merely wet and slick. Chuuya sighs and kisses Dazai’s forehead, coaxing her with soft murmurs of encouragement that made no sense to Dazai in her dazed mind.
Chuuya isn’t surprised when two of her fingers went inside in one go. Though it’s a bit too wild since it take a bit time for Dazai to take more than one finger in sometimes. Dazai moans aloud when she slides in a third finger and presses it just right. She clenches up and before Chuuya can even give some pump, Dazai cums.
At first Chuuya thought if it was just this then it would be ok since sure she can finger her all night along and shouldn’t be a much of a problem. But soon after 6th time of fingering, Dazai began to whine and she knew she would have to give her the oral that Dazai needed.
So she then threw some of her jeans at Dazai that she can inhale into while she does her job down there. Chuuya kissed the inside of her thighs that earned her a soft hiss as if Dazai was trying to tell her to hurry up. Chuuya smiled softly, Dazai still being adorable even if she was out of her mind now. She ran her tongue up and down her clit and that seemed to do the trick, Dazai was arching her back for more stimulation.
Once her tongue made Dazai cum, Chuuya had the urge to just spit on her fingers and press it on Dazai’s entrance to see what actually happens, so she does and as if Dazai’s body could tell what was happening, it had both calmed her down and made her more turned on than before.
After lord knows how many orgasms, Chuuya decided to take a break and use the washroom, only to come back to a silent Dazai staring blankly at the hotel’s ceiling. Chuuya just had opened a bar of protein when she realized Dazai was almost freezing. And that’s when it hit her that Dazai also needed Chuuya’s constant body heat. Chuuya then immediately puts a blanket over them and stats to rub on her inner thighs to get Dazai’s own body heat back on place. When that didn’t work, Chuuya just drapes herself over Dazai to sooth her freezing body.
Dazai just stares blankly at Chuuya and yes, Chuuya had to went down for the 100th time again.
That night Chuuya couldn’t even bring herself to sleep no matter how tired she was after THAT many rounds, because she knew the moment her eyes would close, Dazai would either get extremely cold or just lose her mind again (as if she didn’t already thanks to the heat)
And of course, Chuuya fell asleep on Dazai’s chest but woke up gagging to the smell of millions of roses in their hotel room. She hurriedly gets off the bed and opens another window and comes back to see Dazai with her brows furrowed in her sleep.
Chuuya shakes Dazai awake. Her eyes glistening and glassy under the dim lighting of the room. Chuuya cups Dazai’s cheek gently while Dazai leans onto the touch more.
“Shit! Dazai! Wake up, Osamu!” Chuuya tries her best not to scream. When Dazai finches Chuuya panics, “Fuck fuck, is there anything I can do Osamu!” Dazai just smiles tiredly and mumbles, “Just chibi..Just chibi...”
Chuuya panics again for how long has it even been since Dazai had been like this but starts to kiss her all over again like the previous evening.
So then Dazai’s heat goes on for 5 more days till the day before they leave the ski resort. That morning, Chuuya was snoring softly after their last round of sex and Dazai finally had finished her heat. Dazai woke up, rather fresh and had began to wake Chuuya up. Calling her slug and hatracks but when nothing worked she knew it was probably best for Chuuya to rest after that many days of making love.
The she gets up and takes a shower, her stomach growling, she gets the room service to bring them some food and such. When Chuuya wakes up Dazai is cleaning up their room and preparing for them to leave early morning the following day. Chuuya doesn’t say much except she just grabs Dazai by her neck and kisses her softly.
The last few hours in the ski resort, they spent going around and taking a small walk down the town and eating at the local restaurant.
The next morning they left as planned, taking the train back home. The train ride is 9 hours, but its ok since Dazai had her heat done and if anything bad happened Chuuya can use her martial art skills. Except, at 5 pm when she fell asleep on Dazai’s shoulder, she woke up to the same rose scent.
Chuuya thought it was her dream but fuck sadly it wasn’t. When she opened her eyes, she found Dazai again suckling on the glands on hand.
Chuuya almost screeched, they were  in public and even if Dazai was her mated omega, if a group of alpha attacked them, lord knows what would happen.
Luckily, they arrived in their hometown within in a short amount of time and called a taxi back to their apartment, hoping that nothing would happen and Dazai can hold back. Dazai was about to lose her mind again if Chuuya didn’t bite her scent glands on the neck at the back of the cab and she would have fling herself out of the taxi window. Fortunately, the taxi driver was an elderly beta woman who knew the situation for them and drove them home on a safer route.
And when they came home, they went on it again for 8 more days.
