Hello hello! Idk if you’ve ever received this question before but do you know a good place to find resources for Chinese history? I never really know where to start and it’s hard to find good, in depth, and accurate accounts of Chinese history (or maybe I’m just not looking hard enough or in the right places :’D). It’s specifically for a fanfic surrounding Wang’s dreams and how they reflect certain historical events and his culture

Start with Wikipedia. Yes, yes I know it’s an ‘unreliable source’, but I’ll be lying if I deny its usefulness in research. Wikipedia contains data on basically anything, and its pages are really detailed and conveniently organized. If I could sing I’d write Wikipedia a goddamn love song. Start here. Look through a couple articles and find the historical & cultural information that works for your fic, and then google that specific piece of information for confirmation by other sources.

Look for published articles. This is really just for confirmation. Look for websites other than Wikipedia (ones that end in .org or .edu are the best). Sometimes various universities would even publish articles online in regards to a particular subject. Who knows? you might get lucky!

When in doubt, ask someone from China. I’m gonna be real with you dude like a good chunk of cultural or mythological (and sometimes even historical) information I posted on this blog came from my own experience and understanding of my culture. Sometimes, asking someone who had the experience of living in a certain country will do a lot more good than just reading them online.

Anyhow, that’s about as much as I can think of at the moment. I know I’m not like the smartest or the most knowledgable person in this fandom, but if you want you can message me and I’ll help you to the best of my ability! :)

sometimes i think about the “having a friend group” concept and i’m like wow! that must be fun! that must be nice!! but then i’m like oh god but would *i* even want that even in some magical alternate universe where i have like, many good friends

litrelly like. i learned that “nobody actually enjoys interacting with a Fandom, you just find the several individuals who have the compatible takes and who you like and you only interact with them and that’s what you can enjoy” lesson like, by 2013........i’ve never tried discord b/c anything like a group chat has never worked for me. once or twice back in AIM times i’ve been one of a three-person “group” chat and the fandom i was in at the time was already small enough that there could be one general group chat on skype for all of us and like. eventually and occasionally i’d try participating but really i only talked with a few people one-on-one. i distinctly remember that one particularly nice person in the fandom specifically invited me to try out that main group chat, and i opened it, but i was too nervous to say anything and so i basically was just inadvertently Lurking and i saw the person mention like “yeah i invited them but i guess they don’t want to :///” like oh the experience of seeming standoffish b/c i’m anxious

i also sometimes seem standoffish b/c i just struggle to converse with most people even though i Enjoy Socializing........everyone i’m always like, regularly failing to reply to, i’m sorry it’s not because i don’t like you or i’m like “well THIS isn’t worth my time.” sometimes i’m just finding it so hard to talk that even when the topic is An Interest Of Mine i just flounder and ultimately forgetting or drifting into that realm of “it’s been so long since i answered that even thinking about answering just causes yet more anxiety-inspired procrastination which will once more cause me to forget”

also idk i just don’t have that much Social Appeal. i have the autism and that’s Negative je ne sais quoi. which isn’t the only reason people might not want to talk to me. for example: i’m also rarely initiating Conversations! and bad at Continuing Them!

in person i’m sometimes better at the experience of Group Conversation but only if i’m comfortable enough. sometimes, just like online, i just like. sit there and don’t talk. which i do in most in-person situations. people honestly sometimes think that my ~true nature~ is just to be silent and never have any thoughts or opinions to speak of and that’s why i’m not speaking...........whereas u might be aware that, actually, i’m a wildly opinionated chatterbox who can’t turn down the Takes or the Never Shutting Up!! just like how i love to be social actually but just like........don’t oft get the chance to be

and like i’ve even had the experience of being around a group of people who all already knew and liked me. and i several times got repeatedly really stressed because like, it just becomes Evident that like, there’s this thing where sometimes people for real just tune me out. i’ve had it happen when there’s only me and two other people and i’m like, speaking. i’m repeatedly trying to get a word in and people keep talking without even looking over. it is a Disheartening experience and i’ve had that happen in this larger group of people who know and like me and who just like. at times almost nobody would register that i was there and i would get Stressed / want to get away

honestly the times when i can usually be really social is! when it’s people i Don’t know!! one thing is that i know they won’t have any Expectations re: me / whatever impression is made won’t affect me beyond that present moment lmao but also just idk like, one way i’m not the “usual idea of what’s ~classic autism!!~” is that loudness and being close to a lot of people doesn’t bother me (if it’s something i Expect and i’ve Chosen) and i think things like that are really fun lots of times!! my sensory issues don’t often include Overload but it depends of course. but anyhow i actually find it really easy to be friendly with strangers and even Mask very easily sometimes lol

but yeah the point is like. well first of all it’s difficult to imagine having enough friends to have a “group.” and like, repeatedly repeatedly repeatedly when there’s a Friend Group that’s around and i just so happen to be within its orbit somehow, i really like, maybe end up regularly interacting with a precious few handful of people. and i’ve rarely had many good friends b/c i’m an autistic loser. so it’s hard for me to even know whether A Friend Group is something that could be a reality or something that i’d enjoy. in theory!! but like. ((I’m assuming this is about my first post where I joked that Jotaro was forced into wearing a dolphin suit for free admission forever to his local aquarium but anyway please read the rest of the jumbled mess of a mildly ic opinionated essay under the cut. お願いします!))

“But first, let’s talk about dolphins since you brought them up. The Chinese White Dolphin is a favourite of my blog’s moderator. There’s approximately a 2.5% annual decline in their populations within crucial habitats in the Pearl River estuary. Even under the most ideal conditions, other experts can only agree that the species would be able to survive for another 40 generations. However, it is far far less than ideal. Besides organochlorines, heavy metals and other pollutants in their oceans, coastal development destroying habitats, vessel collision due to increasing marine traffic, underwater noise pollution, and overfishing are other factors rendering propagation in the wild … difficult, to say the least.

This is not a new situation. The Baiji dolphins which inhabited the Yangtze River had suffered similar circumstances and were considered to be functionally extinct in late 2006. It is also considered to be arguably the first dolphin species in history to be driven to extinction.

But back to your question, I am most definitely against any aquariums and zoos that use the animals in their care solely for entertainment and profit, especially if said animals involve species that have high cognitive potential with relationships and social identity being intertwined in how they survive normally in the wild. I also believe that despite the rapid degradation of habitats, I think captivity breeding isn’t the best method for conservation—especially for large marine mammals such as dolphins—as it has its own host of barriers, such as ensuring the starting population is genetically viable, keeping them alive in the long-term, and acquiring sufficient accommodation to house them in the first place. Reintroducing captive borns into the wild is also a difficult task due to likely lacking immunity to wildlife diseases and needing to be reintegrated into wild populations’ social structures. In fact, the few efforts for captive breeding of a similar breed of Pink Dolphins haven’t proved very successful in Singapore’s Sentosa. Capturing a viable starting population is also dangerous as catching methods can gravely injure them.

The most ideal situation for conservation of dolphins and cetaceans would be to first conserve their crucial habitats. So no, I don’t wholeheartedly support dolphinariums or marine mammal parks that insist on sketchy breeding programmes often accompanied by daily 20-minute dolphin performances.

Nevertheless, it is not an ideal world. Unless governments are willing to expand protected zones for these creatures and compromise for sustainable development, more and more may believe captive breeding should unfortunately be considered their last hope.

For example, if I had to grossly simplify the debate on whether the Chinese White Dolphin should be bred in captivity or not then whichever side you support would ultimately be whether one valued the species’ survivability in captivity in terms of their recorded average life spans and infant mortality rates compared to those in the wild over their quality of life, that is, enjoying freedom and a “good life” in animal welfare terms. 

I dearly hope that captive breeding will never be considered a necessity for the propagation of these magnificent creatures, but if there comes a time when we do find the Chinese White Dolphin to be functionally extinct in the wild, I will do whatever I can to try to keep the species alive if there are still any in captivity, and hopefully one day reintroduce them back into Hong Kong waters once sufficient protected zones are established.

Regardless, I can’t deny that captive breeding has or is forecasted to have a great positive impact for other species, marine or terrestrial. For example, captive breeding programmes for salmonids have succeeded in maintaining neutral genetic diversity for several generations (albeit with trends in reduced fitness in offspring), which may be sufficient for whatever dangers in their natural habitats to be removed. Conservation efforts in European and American zoos for the breeding of King Penguins have also proved successful, which is quite a breakthrough as climate change in the Southern Ocean is likely to cause drastic wild population declines in the future. And, while not a marine animal, the Arabian Oryx conservation effort is another significant example.

Still, my overall conclusions for captive breeding in aquariums and zoos is to think of them not as the final solution but a possible plan B until the factors contributing to their initial decline can be addressed. (Though there is the issue with ‘rehab’ animals deemed unreleasable by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums but that’s something to discuss for another time).

Anyhow, aquariums also benefit marine conservation beyond breeding programmes such as research into diseases along with the development of vaccinations, rehabilitation (as the second anon mentioned) and overall responsible promotion and education of marine conservation. Also, it’s unrealistic for facilities to “empty their tanks” and dump their captive born into the wild without meticulous plans for safe and proper transition. Good grief, let’s not forget a similar incident in America where tens of thousands of minks were …forcibly released from a farm only for most of them to likely die of starvation and negatively affect the surrounding ecosystem.

Many marine biologists can say their interest was born from visiting aquariums when they were young. Moreover, there are studies that looked into the positive educational impact of zoos and aquariums in the most recent volume of the Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research, which you may read. Their ability to expose youth to the wonders of marine life is important, though I’d prefer if they weren’t so plentiful and more were NGO non-profit based.

If it helps, I generally judge an aquarium by at least the following criteria:

Prioritize and support human entertainment with dolphin, whale, seal, penguin, etc. shows (especially if they have little emphasis on education)?

Entirely profit-based with very little budget allocation to conservation or research efforts?

Support untrained customers touching and petting captive animals?

No ties to legitimate academic institutions and research projects?

Saying yes to any of the above means it’s likely not that great of an institution, which is, unfortunately, probably most of them. It’s likely your local aquariums do break one of these criteria, but campaigning to shut them down entirely doesn’t have to be the only option, perhaps they can change with enough pressure–unless they are absolutely unforgivable that is.

What I’m saying is that every conservation facility, zoos or aquariums, are unique in their level of ethics and should be considered individually. Responsible zoos and aquariums that prioritise facilitation and promotion of conservation of animals are very much needed in the current era. Elizabeth Kolbert, author of ‘The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History’, had suggested we are amidst a sixth mass extinction event and that 20-50% of all flora and fauna on earth will be lost by the end of the 21st century . Unfortunately, this one being different than the others with human activity playing a significant part. While it would be ideal if animals could thrive on their own in the wild or protected areas, that is ultimately not so …easy for most endangered and threatened species, to say the least.

((DISCLAIMER: I’m NOT an expert nor do i have formal education in marine science. I’ve been interested in it since I had the pleasure to see a Chinese White Dolphin during a local dolphin watch tour by the HK Dolphinwatch when I was a wee child a decade ago. There were over 180 dolphins recorded in 2003 but the numbers have since declined to 87 in 2010 and 47 in the last year. Ocean Park, which is basically the only large marine mammal park–and conservation facility on the side–in Hong Kong, has shown interest in breeding them in captivity but ofc there’s a lot of criticism to that, most of which I agree with but god the whole situation is really distressing and idk what we can do because the government sure isn’t gonna do anything like expanding protected zones or enforcing regulation on marine traffic through those zones. In fact, the new zhuhai bridge and other runways they’re using our tax money for is most certainly making the whole situation worse lol god just kill me take me instead of the dolphins i’ve had enough of this world))

“Have any of you seen Y/N?” there were a few people shaking their heads at Murphy as he continued to push his way through the group of people who had just arrived at the bunker. He was starting to get more and more panicked as he couldn’t find your familiar face in the crowd. He did however locate a somewhat sane looking Raven.

“Raven, have you seen Y/N?”

Raven shook her head “No, she was with me back there for a bit but we got separated. She was with Bellamy. I’m sure she’s fine Murphy”

Murphy wasn’t so sure of that fact. He knew Y/N better than anyone. She was, scared might be the wrong word, but intimidated by Bellamy and wouldn’t have voluntarily chosen to walk with him. No matter how much Murphy had tried to reassure her Y/N was still as shy as a mouse and almost as jumpy.

Almost pushing past Raven, he continued to scan faces around the bunkers main room. The bedraggled group of Skaikru were covered in dirt and camouflage making it even harder to try and find you. Never mind the fact that you were so small it wasn’t easy to see you in crowds usually.

“Y/N?” shouting his voice barely reached over the cacophony of noise the crowd was making. Murphy did spot Bellamy though at the back of the group. Putting his head down he barrelled through the group of people with his shoulder. “Bellamy”

The taller man turned around to look at Murphy. “Yeah”

“Have you seen Y/N? I can’t find her anywhere”

“She went to find you” Bellamy frowned using his height to his advantage he peered over the tops of the people’s heads that were closest to them. “I don’t know” he admitted “I can’t see her. She was fine though, tired and a bit dehydrated but nothing more than that”

Murphy bit at his lip turning back to the crowd of people. He didn’t like this one bit, he liked having you close. You were the clumsiest person he’d ever met and most likely the unluckiest as well. At least when you were close by him he could protect you. Could look out for you.

Scanning the people around him once more his heart sank when he still couldn’t find your familiar body in the crowds.

“Murphy?!”

Spinning so fast he nearly fell over Murphy locked eyes with your own. Stood a few feet away from him a smile nearly splitting your face apart.

“Y/N” his voice was relieved as his feet moved without his conscious control. He had you wrapped in his arms with your feet dangling from the ground before he knew what was happening. You were laughing in his ear hugging him back just as tightly. The panic was finally receding from his body. At least now you were here, right in front of him where he could stop you getting into any more trouble.

Putting you back down on your feet he just stared into you face. Bellamy had been right you looked unhurt. There was a scratch on your right cheek but other than that there were no visible marks on your face. He was half tempted to start checking the rest of your body right then and there for any other injuries you may have acquired.

“John?” You were looking at him curiously obviously wondering why he was staring at you so hard.

“Just checking you for damage sweetheart”

“I’m fine” you assured him.

Murphy had heard that before from you and every time you had been anything other than fine. At the moment though he was to relieved to have you safe and in front of him once more that he just decided to let it go.

He leant down to hug you once more exactly at the same moment you’d raised yourself up on your tip toes to hug him and somehow, he managed to get his lips lined up exactly with your own. Your eyes widened in shock and jerking to the side you kind of awkwardly smashed into each other your face in his shoulder. Ignoring the awkwardness of that Murphy simply hugged you. Holding you safe.

“I can’t believe I’m here” you said happily as with your fingers laced with Murphy’s the two of you walked through the narrow corridors of the bunker. You’d been assigned a room towards the end of the corridor which you’d be sharing with Raven.

“Why were you with Bellamy?”

“Oh” you shrugged still not able to rid the smile from your face “his walkie wasn’t working and Raven was having a… episode so I went over to fix it”

“His Walkie?”

“Yeah, the radio thing. You know that you talk through” Murphy just shook his head at you a small smirk on his face. “What? What’s wrong with the word Walkie?”

“Nothing” it was clear from the tone in his voice though that he obviously thought that you were hilarious. “You’re over here” he pointed at the door with the right room number on for you.

Pushing open the door you found nothing but a small bunk bed which you could guarantee you’d end up with the top one. There was very little head room on the top and Raven would just complain saying you were smaller so logically you should take the top bunk.

Other than the bunk beds there was very little furniture in the room, not that any other furniture would fit anyhow. Murphy shut the door of the room behind him leaning against it with his arms folded over his chest. You on the other hand walked the full length of the room, it wasn’t really a room maybe more like a cabin. The whole room took you 6 strides to cover and you had short legs.

“Where’s your room?”

That smirk was back “why going to come jump me in the middle of the night?”

“Don’t be an idiot John” you blushed, you had this annoying habit of doing that. He wasn’t even really embarrassing you. You still couldn’t help the flush on your cheeks though.

“I’m back that way” he pointed his thumb in the vague direction of his room. “I wouldn’t mind you know”

“Mind what?”

“If you wanted to come jump me?” Yeah that blush was full on tomato red at this point not helped by the fact that Murphy suddenly laughed uncrossing his arms and walking the few steps over to you.  “You’re just adorable”

Glaring at him you crossed your own arms across your chest. “You better not be messing with me right now John Murphy, because I warn you just because I’m shy, awkward and slightly clumsy that does not mean that I cannot beat your ass to a pulp”

Without any further warning Murphy leant down and pressed his lips against your own. You stood there shocked into stillness for a minute.

Murphy’s hand came up to cup your cheek as he let your lips go. “Still think I’m messing?”

“No” you whispered as your arms came uncrossed and you allowed him to pull your body into his own. Every inch of you was pressed up against Murphy. His own hand slid to the base of your back holding you still. “No, I don’t think you’re messing”

“Good”

His mouth descended to your own once more and you gave in to all the dirty idea’s you’d had about Murphy for the past few years. You’d never expected them to come true and the fact that he was stood there kissing you wasn’t quite sinking in.

“Well fuck, finally you two” Raven’s voice interrupted and you jumped shuffling away from Murphy. Not that there was much room to get that far away from him.

“Raven!” you squeaked that blush was back on your face again for definite.

Raven however didn’t seem to care about finding you locked in Murphy’s arms instead dumping her bag on the bottom bunk as predicated. “You ok with top?” it wasn’t really a question so you didn’t answer it.

Murphy’s hand slid down your back and squeezed your ass making you glare at him. He just laughed leaning down to kiss you quickly once more.

“I’ll see you later” he promised.

He was to the door when your confidence finally reasserted itself a bit. “John? What room number are you in?”

He looked over his shoulder smirking “324”

Hey, for those who are still looking out for my HTML/CSS tutorial and lesson posts, I have some updates for you all! 

[And quick apologies if the banner made you hopeful that this is my next lesson. I am putting it there because it’ll be an important in-between with my series.]

For a while (about a year), I’ve already been considering backing up these posts on my own future website and continuing the lessons/tutorials there. With current news I’ve been seeing about tumblr not being reliable storage, this might be a good time to discuss what I plan on doing with my series and what I’ll improve for its format when I manage to fully transfer it to my website.

A few things to expect for my planned transfer/backup of my lessons...

Title Change: First and foremost, the series will have a different name once it’s on my personal website. I tend to use a universal online alias, so I intend on changing the “Fluffy Teaches” to something else upon transfer! (I’m not anonymous on this blog anymore as of last summer, afterall...)

Layout Upgrades: With tumblr posts, you’re very limited in how everything can look, and can’t do much in an efficient, time-saving manner. You can do a lot more with custom pages on your blog, but from what I’ve noticed, my own textboxes on the page for my lessons get a little messed up easily as they conflict with tumblr’s default code. When I’m putting this on my own website, though? I have SO MUCH creative freedom! I already have some concept designs planned for the lessons, and I hope these designs make the lessons more appealing (hopefully) and interactive for you all!

Important Mistake Fixes: Okay, I want need to fix a few errors I made in my lessons absent-mindedly. I can’t stand leaving them there when I look back on them; but if I’m going to put time into transferring my series onto my website.... I’ll fix all those mistakes and errors upon transfer. Will the fixes show here? Yeah, I’ll do that too. I just plan to focus on this transfer process first, so hang in there!

Higher Quality Images: The obvious change here is that the images for my lessons will be higher quality. This is because on my blog, most/all of the images I use tend to get blurred and lowered in their crisp-ness. So, expect ‘em to truly be crisp when they’re on my website!

About my future website: This is a project I was working on until I was more busy with my final year in high school waaay back in 2013 (I think?). The stress of that final year screwed up my emotional health and tossed me into a major anxiety rut that lasted until late last year. I’m a lot better now thanks to therapy and my strong will for recovery alone, so I’m trying to get back to work on this website during the course of this year!

The main/general layout for it is also rather old, so I do have some of my old messy code to work with. However, I’m only going with this for now as I’ve yet to plan a new layout and don’t want to spend way more time redoing my site from scratch.

How I’ll get it hosted? Well, I’m hoping I can find an affordable domain service that’s still good quality and has good security, etc. Idk how common that is yet, as I have to research this more and look for reviews, but I am keeping huge mental note on it.

I’ll also try and find some way to get support for my website on the side. I may research Paypal’s donation services and make sure I don’t accidentally do something illegal with their service. Another thing I’ve been trying to look into is Patreon, but I haven’t figured out a satisfying system for it that I believe will be encouraging and rewarding for whoever decides to pitch in their support. 

(Keep in mind, that if I DO use donation-like methods to ensure better financial health for my future website, I wouldn’t want anyone feeling guilty for not pitching in! If you can’t pitch in, don’t. If you don’t want to pitch in, don’t feel obligated either! It’s merely an option. Not a requirement.)

Anyhow, my first goal is to make sure my website is actually complete and ready for hosting at all. Transferring my lessons to it will be part of that completion process.
