The Last to Leave

AU where Oro joins Tsunade in leaving Konoha post the 2nd Shinobi war, rather than getting with Danzo and terrible experiments and such. More info under the cut

I was partially inspired by this wonderful Tsunade centric fic, and thought about how Tsunade, even in grief, channeled it into something productive. In this case, I thoroughly enjoy the idea of her creating a whole new system/organisation that prioritises saving lives/improving wellbeing. And the only way to do that is to leave the system of militaristic shinobi villages.

In this au, Oro decides to join her as head researcher, and the two go on to set up their own ways of doing things I guess???? Idk. But yeah, it kinda kills my soul to think about how the Sannin, if banded together and away from Konoha, could cause a paradigm shift in the Shinobi world, with Tsunade at the helm rejecting the shinobi way of life.

Jiraiya isn’t here because.. it kinda sucks that it’s canon??? That Dan dies sometime after he decides to stay in Ame. sdlkjfgsd. The trio is all toxic, but I think this AU’s tsuna is less so and her and oro keep each other in check.

A / N : i read somewhere boothill doesn't feel anything on anywhere else except his face because he doesn't have skin to sense things there and this makes great fluff sauce so i couldn't resist.. "But don't you only write for bsd?" shhSHUSH SHUSH!!

Boothill, a mechanical robot.

One that drifts among the stars. One that you held close to your heart. You didn't meet him long ago, in fact, it was only a while ago. He was unhinged and "weird", sure.. but who could deny such a silly man from being their friend?

As far as you knew, he wasn't doing anything wrong. Nor that he thought he did. Him being impertinent wasn't bothering you, not at all. Everybody had flaws, imperfections, problems. Did that stop people from loving them? No, absolutely not. Why should he be treated differently? In fact — He should be treated specially to learn how to act more "human".

Or maybe that's just how you thought, you had hopes for him, hoped he would somewhat grow human-like feelings.

You knew he doesn't exactly 'feel", but physical touch could help him. You knew that, because whenever you caressed his cheek, he would laugh and process it. That or he'd smile and be softer for a brief minute. It was an amazing sight, really, perhaps that was one step closer him being "more human" emotion-wise.

Laying by your side was something he'd do occasionally, out of boredom or when he had nothing else to do. Getting new plates, new wires weren't exciting at all. He'd prefer to stay by your side, thank you very much. You slowly kicked your feet in the air while laying on your stomach, reading a book that you've already read a billion times. But what could you do? The plot was interesting, and you were a big fan of the author.

And now, you finished it for the zillionth time. Closing the book, you got up from the couch lazily, blinking a few times after that reading session to come to your senses. A soft sigh left your lips as you stretched for good - it was amazing, it almost felt like your brain just reset.

One thing you didn't expect though, was to find Boothill seated across the same couch with his back turned to you. He wasn't moving or anything. Eh, oh well, why not talk to him.. But you didn't want to say anything just yet. Your almost feet started moving on their own, approaching the cyborg without much care.

You didn't make any sounds whatsoever. Odd, that he didn't notice you getting up. With shallow breaths, you snaked your arm around his torso, still not saying anything while you silently hugged him from behind.

You sat there for like 3 minutes, but then you called out:

"Boothill?" you rasped out, tightening your hug even further, as much as you could. The metal was kind of hard to wrap your arms around, but you didn't bother letting go.

"[Name], ha?!" He exclaimed, looking very startled now. He even flinched, what a goofy man. "You got up, sweetums!" He added, a grin creeping up on his face, making his fangs and sharp teeth glow like a fresh pearl.

"I got up a few minutes ago. And hugged you." You replied, blinking with a slightly cocked eyebrow, looking sleepy. Speaking of sleep, it seemed that you had a fatigue today but that was off-topic..

"I- Didn't notice it. How senseless and idiotic of me. But— That just makes me cuter, doesn't it?! Ha?" He turned around off-puttingly, and that did NOT go well with your current judgy attitude. Giving him a stink eye, you pulled away.

"So you don't have sensors on these bad boys?" You asked, hand going over the silver lining on his body. He didn't even react to it, and gave a loopy chuckle, before nodding. "Should I get some sensors on them?"

"Wouldn't that make it hurt more when you get injured though?"

"True.."

My mans is being dragged through the mud both in the books and online. We say we “love him” but are ignoring what he wants and babes, that’s Elain. If you don’t like her personally, that’s not how Az is feeling, that’s how YOURE feeling. Gwyn has one chapter (+1 sentence) of where I can even attempt to grasp at what Gwynriel’s quote as bible, but again, AZ AND ELAIN HAVE 3 BOOKS. Y’all are acting like Rhys in Az’s bonus chapter and if Rhys couldn’t make his stance acceptable, y’all definitely can’t.

Elain

Again, I say, if you do not like the lady pictured above, stop reading ACOTAR cause she ain’t going anywhere. To be so for real, I didn’t mind Elain at first, meaning I didn’t care whether or not she was included in any story whatsoever. But as I read ACOWAR and ACOFAS, I started realizing that there’s something so lovely about having a character who is innately good and wants/practices peace in a world of animosity and ugliness. She brings beauty in all areas of her life and I think that there’s nothing bad about being “boring” cause that just means your life ain’t a dang mess (*cough* *cough* everybody else in this book)

So here is where I debunk all the claims I have grown tired of ignoring:

• #1 - “He hadn’t gotten that far into his planning beyond the fantasies he’s pleasured himself to.”

So, y’all really think you got us here, huh? So, my man Azriel blatantly admits to thinking of Elain when he wants to be intimate and y’all STILL want your girl to be with this man?

Anyway, so Azriel hadn’t planned a relationship with Elain…OKAY???? Did you expect this man to have a map laid out about how he’s going to steal Lucien’s mate??? Do y’all even know Azriel? Like, be so for real rn.

Idk about y’all but when I have a crush on someone, I’m not thinking about how to steal them from the rest of the world, I’m imagining kissing them or going on cute dates. Not how I’ll actually make it happen. And ik y’all do that too with your favorite celebrities so stop playing.

He has a crush. Can you let the man figure out if Elain even wants him to act on it before he plans a 12-step mission on making Lucien disappear forever?

Azriel doesn’t want to force his emotions on anyone (as seen with Mor) so of course he’s not going to act or plot without confirmation that the other person in the party wants that. I.E. why he hadnt tried anything with Mor in all the CENTURIES that he liked her.

So, yeah, consider that point invalid.

• #2 - Lucien is Elain’s mate

(PC: @shauna_the_author) *sigh* This one cannot be dubunked, unfortunately, because it is true. You got me here.

BUT

Elain is more likely to marry Nuala and Cerridwen before she spends the rest of her life with Lucien.

And it has nothing to do with Lucien. It really, really doesn’t. Elain simply doesn’t like him. Y’all were in my comments like “oh he didn’t really sell out Elain and Nesta, he didn’t know”. OKAY. But Elain literally says in ACOWAR that she knows Lucien as two things: Feyre’s friend and the MAN WHO SOLD THEM OUT TO HYBERN

Who cares if it isn’t true, that’s what Elain thinks and with her in mind, you can’t say that this bond means anything more to her than Lucien having some ownership of her which she doesn’t like at all. She even tells Graysen that she doesn’t care Lucien is her mate (“I belong to no one, but my heart belongs to you.”)

Whereas with Azriel, my girl is practically skipping into his arms; talking with him about her dream garden, getting him not one but two solstice gifts, almost-kissing him, recoiling at Cassian’s dagger but actively using Azriel’s…

Idk about y’all but if someone who was fated to be with me was acting this way with another girl, I’d drop him like a hot potatoe. AND AS LUCIEN SHOULD. He deserves someone who wants him, not someone who, as even Lucien said in ACOWAR when he was questioning if Elain was “worth it”, is shackled to him.

I harbor no ill will toward this dreamy man, but it ain’t gonna happen so do Elain a favor and lose her number, k?

• #3 - Sarah wouldn’t do the 3 brothers with 3 sisters, it’s too cliche

Write your own book then. Fan fiction is a thing. If the ONLY thing preventing you to see reason is the possibility of a cliche in a book about kingdoms and fairies and magic then your priorities are so out of shape I won’t even spend the time explaining it to you.

This is SARAH’s WORLD. If she wants to be cliche and have the three female protagonists end up with the three male protagonists then let her. Omg.

• #4 - That Gwynriel scene tho

(NOTE THE PICTURE) Oh, you mean the bonus chapter that featured thoughts about Elain? Not that one? Oh, then maybe you mean the other bonus chapter that featured thoughts about Elain? No? You mean the scene with Gwyn…hmmm

OH! You mean the 2 page conversation about training and why he couldn’t sleep (cause of Elain) and the subsequent regift of Elain’s present to Gwyn. Yeah, I know about that but why are we talking about it? Cause that means Az likes Gwyn? Huh?

That’s how delulu y’all sound. And if I hear another “you’re the ribbon Az”, one more time I’ll scream. THE RIBBON WAS ABOUT TRAINING NOT GWYN WANTING TO SLEEP WITH THE MAN. We are talking about the same girl who hadn’t left a library in god knows how long because of a sexual trauma and y’all are forcing her onto another man??

Gwyn was focused on coming into herself and mastering the ways of the Valkyrie. Nesta meant Gwyn found another obstacle in Az that she would have to overcome to become a Valkyrie. The only man Gwyn was concerned about was Cassian and that’s cause he was getting it on with Nesta. Again, be so for real right now.

I refuse to acknowledge this point until the opposing ships acknowledge the 3 books (+ ACOFAS) of build up between Elain and Azriel.

• #5 - Elain doesn’t belong in the Night Court

This is the last point I’ll mention cause I actually feel bad for dogging the Gwynriels like this, but it had to be done. (Elucians get a pass bc at least their ship is based in evidence)

Elain doesn’t belong in the Night Court, okay, yeah Cassian said that the colors drown her out, I’ll give you that.

But Elain doesn’t know where she belongs anymore, just like Azriel has said about himself. She’s still figuring herself out and what she wants, so it’s okay she looks odd at times or feels at times out of place. Azriel keeps his shadows out 24/7 for the same reason. He doesn’t let anyone past the front he puts on unless he knows it’s safe to. They’re both figuring out how to live their best lives in their current lives.

I’ve heard Dusk Court theories and others but I won’t even repeat those (even tho they’re so good and you should definitely look into them). They just need to find their place in this world (and Cassian was right, Elain DOES NOT BELONG in the Hewn City).

Just like how Nesta didn’t believe she belonged in the Inner Circle, I believe there’s a place for Elain and Azriel where they can be themselves. They just need to find it I.E. their book.

Okay, that’s enough slaying of my enemies for one post. Again, this is just my opinion/theories and at the end of the day I’ll be happy with whatever Mrs. Maas gives us as long as she gives us something.

Poly Relationships Aren’t A Plot Device!!!

Bit if a warning: Angry rant with sloppy points and writing but Idc here you go

The thing about poly relationships, is we get no goddamn healthy rep whatsoever, and the rest of the LGBTQI+ community treat us like a weird dog-rat hybrid. Yes I know this is a bit extreme but at least hear me out before jumping in to be like, “That’s not true!!” especially if you’re not poly so therefor have no idea what our viewpoint is like.

To begin, the only rep we ever have in movies or TV or books is boiled down to a plot device, a trope, a love triangle, or simply just sexual. The only time I’ve seen poly relationships in movies and TV is literally just sexual— sexual and cheating. It’s always “I caught my husband with two other girls at once!” Or “Oh I’m cheating on you but let’s force this to work…” Or just overall shit communication and unrealistic issues.

Wanna know what that has done to poly relationships irl?

Everyone assumes it’s some kink thing, or that we are all cheaters, or that it’s all unfaithful and full of lies and jealousy. The amount of people who will hear of an actual poly relationship and go, “Oh you do it for the sex” is WILD.

But wanna know where we’ve heard this sorta assumption before?

For gay and lesbian relationships before better rep was given to it. Do y’all remember when being gay was reduced to just sex stuff by that majority? Poly relationships are STILL THERE. Yeah there’s people who will actually realize that it’s not all sexual, but so many people hear about poly relationships and assume it’s a kink.

Hell, anytime I look up definitions for poly relationships, it always seems to mention “but there’s usually a sexual aspect to that!” ???? NO?? Me and my partners are literally asexual ??

And I’m not shitting on people who are poly for the sex but that’s the same exact thing as like… ANYONE being any sexuality due to… the sex of it. It’s not exclusive to just poly relationships. But for some reason, we are looked at as different than the rest of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Another note is the common phrases and questions asked to poly people in response to saying we are poly. Such as:

- “Oh do you have a favorite?” Obviously harmful?? That’s fucked up??

- “Don’t you get jealous?” ???? Just don’t ask this??

- “Who is the third wheel?” Again just fucked up so stfu

- “Oh it could never work for me, you do you though.” While it seems respectful, if you think deeper about it, there’s no reason to say it in this way. No shit it wouldn’t work for you because you’re not poly. Do you see me going around saying, ‘Oh I could NEVER be a lesbian… you do you though.’ Obviously not because I’m not a lesbian like? I wouldn’t just start listing labels I’m not and ending it with that. “You do you” okay be fr and just say you’re polyphobic lmao

- Or just overall bringing up every single failed poly relationship to compair it to ours. Stop. Nobody cares.

Idk just I’m gonna post this because some of y’all piss me off, always sexualizing a valid label or calling it a trope and kink. Fight me in the comments and let’s see how many people are just polyphobic and small minded lmao.

Before you continue, a note: NONE of these pictures are exactly how I picture my characters. These are simply the closest I could get/who I took inspo from when describing them. 🖤 Please do not feel like you need to agree w me. That is the beauty of reading, is it not? Love you. ALSo. This is long, but I wanted to include my notes for clarification if you wanted them. This was fun, getting to have a lil in depth convo w you guys.🥹

PS- IF YOU HAVE NOT READ MY FANFIC “Dealing With Our Demons” on ao3 (by ravenyenn19) & are planning to do so (thx in advance ily) THIS POST WILL HAVE SPOILERSISH. I say this bc while no plot will be ruined, you will see faces you are not meant to yet. 🖤

First up we have: Khalid Runa (Inej’s childhood best friend) & Rahul Runa (Inej’s older cousin) *these two are married, hence the shared surname*

Notes: Khalid is pretty close, actually. In DWOD, he has aquamarine/green eyes due to his partially Kaelish heritage & I do picture his skin tone to be a tad lighter due to this. ALSO: Khalid does have burn scars across most of his hands, though I was unable to find such an image to include that piece of “DWOD lore”. (The burns are from his years mastering ‘flame eating/fire dancing’ in the caravans.

Rahul: This image is mostly chosen for his facial structure, however I do picture Rahul to have close cropped hair (a sort of subversion upon the suli culture that makes his training as a medic easier. I do picture him also remaining clean-shaven with a skin tone that is very similar to his cousin, Inej Ghafa.)

Next: Nani (Mitra) Ghafa (Inej’s maternal grandmother)

Notes: This actress is actually Iranian, for note. SO: I do want to make it very clear that I picture Nani’s skin tone to be darker like Inej (though also I do think this photo was filtered bc the actress does seem to have slightly darker skin in other pics, I chose this one bc of her face & HOW SHE HOLDS HERSELF SO MUCH LIKE NANI.) All this being said, this one is pretttttty dang similar to how I pictured Nani while writing her. Facial features specifically. What a queen. What more is there to say? She could divine my tea leaves any time.

Sharya & Kahir Ghafa, Inej’s parents (technically not OG characters, but never named in canon)

Notes: Sharya is pretty dang close to how I imagined her, which is super cool considering I never used an inspo pic for either of the Ghafas when writing them (I found them for this purpose!). It probably sounds a bit weird, but like… I just knew how Sharya & Kahir looked. They were just…BAM. Full formed people in my head. This is ultimately SUCH A FLEX ON LEIGH BARDUGO’s PART. Like, we only really experienced glimpses of Inej’s parents through the few memories in her POVs but they absolutely stuck with me & formed wonderful characters as my fic progressed. (Of course this is my opinion, but I do hope ya’ll agree.🥹)

Kahir: So…. This pic is the closest I could get, & similar to Nani, I chose it based more on facial structure/in this case facial hair. HOWEVER, Kahir is very special to me. I wrote some of his scenes in moments after I had lost my godfather, (whom was the truest father I had. He meant everything to me, being my actual dad’s best friend, he helped raise me after my dad passed when I was 4.), hence, I feel the need to clarify- as I feel a bit of my own dad is in Kahir, if only in the love.)This pic is missing a smile that I imagine near permanent on Kahir Ghafa’s face, and eyes that I cannot explain in any other word but kind. Similar to Inej’s. Sparkly. Idk. ALSO: I do picture true black hair & less gray. Maybe a sprinkle of pepper in his beard, but not much. I just imagine Inej’s parents aging like fine wine. Idk.

Next….*drum roll*…. Dr. Lily Arbor (I waited so long to bring this girl to life.)

NOTES: Ok. So. Two pics here for our Darling Death Defier Mortician. 🫶🏻 So, the one on the left is more youthful to me, a bit closer (although not the right age) to how I imagine the Lily of Kaz’s childhood. The right being far closer to how I imagine 24 year old Lily. Yet, neither of these are exactly right. But they are close. The changes that are distinct within my mind are as follows: the eyes. I distinctly see them like 2 shades darker. Navy. It’s a rare eye color, but not that different. Next, the hair. In the left image, the curls are just right, but I imagine she keeps her hair slightly longer than that- both in girlhood & adulthood. Not nearly the length of Inej’s, but you feel me. Also I do imagine her hair a bit darker, like that sort of red with hints of almost brown in it? Maroon? Gosh I can’t explain but I am certain you guys probably get it. Less like Wylan’s orangish red. Lastly: this girl has more freckles. I don’t make the rules. (Actually I do since she’s a daughter of my mind, but no I don’t.)

Bonus heartbreak:

Jordie.🥹💔 (obviously aged up to if he were alive.) notes: NO ONE. I REPEAT. NO ONE looks exactly how I imagine the elder Rietveld son. The actor here is in fact Jess from Gilmore Girls. Milo is the closest I’ve come to finding an older Jordie face cast, based more on book Kaz in relation. His hair would obviously not be styled like the early 00’s. Obviously dark eyes like his brother. In a way, like Kahir, I imagine Jordie’s eyes would have a permanent sparkle of amusement that one would sometimes see mirrored in Kaz. I can’t explain it. I love Jordie & I’m about to have a fit all over again. 🫡

Next…. Bram Rietveld (technically not OG character, but he is not named nor described whatsoever in the canon material. Kaz only says that he and his brother missed their Da.🥹)

Notes: DO NOT COME FOR ME. I AM DEFENDING MYSELF. Not to sound cringe, but from the moment I put Kaz’s Da into DWOD, back in memories at the very very early stages of the story, I pictured Pedro. This was before the internet craze (I mean obvs he was famous but iykyk), & I know that sounds cringe but it’s true. Pedro Pascal IS Bram Rietveld. Like, I would change next to nothing. Obviously his voice would have a “southern” ring. Maybe he’d have slightly lighter skin naturally being of Kerch descent, but actually I imagine him quite tan at most points of the year from running the Rietveld farm & harvesting the wheat fields. Obviously, you can picture him differently, but this is damn near exact for me. Also, Last of Us only solidified that belief for me. Gosh dangit, look at this treasure! Bram loved his kids so much.

Are you ready? (I’d say I saved the best for last, but… Actually, no. I certainly did.) I present…

Emilia Winstrad, The Butcher of Belendt🪡

Notes: I love her. I love Emilia as much as I love the protagonists from my actual novel. She means so much to me. 🥹 I don’t think I can quite explain how excited I was (& how long I waited) to introduce you guys to Emilia. I hope you love her as much as I do in DWOD. As far as technical notes: Rachel McAdams (this actress) has quite honestly the exact facial features I pictured on Emilia. Like Bram, I feel like this is Em. However, there are a few minor changes: dark eyes like Kaz rather than hazel (it’s hard to tell here), & also the same dark hair as Kaz. True black. Tbh, I was shocked when I stumbled upon images of McAdams randomly (after already describing Emilia in the story)- it felt like seeing a picture of an online friend you’ve never actually met but they somehow appear exactly as you thought they would? Make sense?

Bonus pics that show the darker hair I imagine on another actress. Also the pipe picture just for funsies (iykyk)🫶🏻🪓

She is my pride & joy. Not only that, but I think she and Kaz were meant to be family. I am not Leigh & have no canon voice, but I swear somewhere in the multiverse she is canon & I say that with fear because it’s not meant to sound precocious. She just feels so real to me, but I’m sure that’s silly bc I wrote her. Idk. Take my ramblings 🖤

Notes: OBVIOUSLY these are pics of the same actress because Em & Elle are identical twins. However, I did choose an image of McAdams from earlier in her acting career as she did pass away younger than when Emilia appears in the story. The same notes apply here as to Em, dark hair & dark eyes would be the changes. Though, I do love this pic representing Elena as there is something a bit softer about her over her sister. Where Emilia applies blood red lipstick, Elle is a petal pink. I think that metaphor fits best, but undoubtedly I wanted Elena to have her own strength in the memories where we get to glimpse her. A woman who chose her baby son, Kaz’s life over her own. The type of mother who would have run into a burning building for her kids. A fierce little sun ray who deserved a yellow kitchen. 🥹

Okay, some acftl opinions under the cut, since I was asked. By no means all of them and they’re… a bit critical. Not here to ruin anyone’s day, please love it if you loved it, but I’m feeling kind of weird about this one

Obviously the HEAVIEST of SPOILERS FOR A CURSE FOR TRUE LOVE

Nothing was tied up except EvaJacks being together. Like! Good for them! But even that wasn’t even… satisfying. Luc? Done. Marisol? Gone. Castor out just MASSACRING PEOPLE. LaLa, neutral toward Dane. The Valors? Just out and about now after like a thousand years of everyone just knowing they were dead for sure. ALL of House Fortuna massacred and basically no one blinked an eye. Jacks apples? Who gives a shit.

Is Jacks mortal now? In theory yes but it was never… really remarked upon? He shouldn’t have his powers anymore, he shouldn’t be a Fate, he shouldn’t be immortal… but not a word of this was mentioned.

What… was the point in mentioned Lysander having the ability to mess with memories if he had nothing to do with any of this? Did Aurora like… distill his powers? Unlikely, as it feels truly unrelated. This is something Jacks, Castor, and LaLa knew- why did none of them bring this up in an effort to restore Eva’s memories? Lysander’s ability, if I’m not mistaken, was not mentioned at ALL in this book, despite it revolving around Eva not being able to remember anything

You want backstory on Jacks? NO. Was Jacks from a Great House? Literally any information on who he was pre Fate besides trying to help people? No. Nothing.

LaLa deserves her revenge against Aurora. No joke. Aurora not being punished whatsoever besides still not getting to be with Jacks (called everything about Aurora no joke). Aurora’s actions were UH kind of the worst by far. Especially when it’s turned around that Aurora didn’t even love Lyric? Y’all.

I know a lot of this ties into the happy for now idea but it was just TOO much. Stephanie Garber has talked about this being the last book in the world for the foreseeable future which drives me NUTS after the ending. The whole book felt so rushed and so weirdly all over the place? With a handful of awkward walk backs chalked up to “well the story curse” and clumsy dropped plots?

“Where do we go now?” “Wherever you want” uh, no, 1) what. What kind of ending is that? After all this? 2) I mean. So long as that doesn’t include the Meridian Empire, I guess?

Idk, I’ve got more, but being left with FAAAARRRR more questions than answers bothers the hell out of me. I’m in the process of listening to the audiobook post reading it and I’ll probably physically read it again when my standard edition from faecrate comes in but for now. Hm. I think I just realized something…I think what Disney wanted King Magnifico to ultimately be, was Gilderoy Lockhart.

Magnifico character starts to make sense, kind of?

Hear me out…

For the villain plot to work like they have in the movie. Magnifico’s magic has to be weak. It’s all for show, glitz and glamour, but no real power. Which also fits his motif of mirrors (smoke and mirrors). He should have been a sorcerer who learned one real good spell, the wish spell, and the rest of his magic is all show, but he has like a 20 on charisma so he is able to fool a ton of people. Kind of like a Gilderoy Lockhart. This is why when the town starts pushing back he gets upset and heads straight to the forbidden magic. He has no real power so he needs to get some.

Which would have been great to see…problem is Disney didn’t do that. They didn’t expand on his character, or at least they didn’t expand on his character in that direction. All the info we get of him is he had this traumatic event that happened to him and his vowed to keep it from happening again, where in he took the time to study magic and become a great sorcerer, fell in love and founded a kingdom. Now that story could have all been a lie and just for show on his part, but the movie never shows you if the backstory is either true or a lie, or at least fubbed up a little.

For all intents and purposes, it seems to be true, but that means his reaction to Asha and the townsfolk when he gets a little push back is an extreme and unnecessary overreaction. And that serving as the catalyst to him using the book, seems extremely poor. If he was the Lockhart type of villain, then yes perfectly acceptable catalyst…but if you were going for a tragic villain who is out of, perceivable options…what they should have used as a catalyst instead would be that his magic, the magic he has work so hard to learn to protect his kingdom/self-interest… has little to no effect on star’s magic whatsoever. That would have been a much better reason to use the book, because it plays upon his fears of not being strong enough to keep what he has, and lose it all again.

Idk I think, Im thinking way too much/hard on this mediocre movie. 😓

In what position do you think a (lot) smarter Aleksander would be?

This is difficult to say because it’s like at what point in time does he acquire this additional intelligence lol? Does it change his goals? Or simply how he pursues them?

Like first of all, I don’t understand why it took him that long to attempt a coup. I can sub in headcanons about how he thought as long as the Shadow Fold is a problem he can’t solve, it’s going to give the impression of an ineffective government and he doesn’t want that associated with his rule, so the Lantsovs can keep the bad PR until they find a sun summoner. But the book never actually implies that? So what’s going on? Is he just procrastinating? Does he have anxiety?

Meanwhile, why is he just sitting around waiting for a sun summoner? What if one never shows up? Has he really just been sitting around for centuries doing nothing? Like was he just going to wait endlessly with zero back up plan? Like regular people in real history have been way more effective in taking power and that’s without the aid of a personal army, immortality, a literally endless amount of time, or the unholy powers of darkness lmao.

The political backdrop of this series truly makes no sense 😭😭😭

But yeah if we’re ignoring that and just talking about how he could have been smarter once the plot took off:

The absolute biggest, most bewildering mistake he makes imo is going full gloves off insane villain mode once Alina runs away. I love it as a character beat, but it’s literally so easy to… not do that. He doesn’t attempt any damage control whatsoever. He basically confirms everything Baghra said about him, when he could have just played up the fact that Alina disappeared in the middle of the night and he’s been SO worried about her, etc etc.

From a character perspective, I think he’s just too old and impatient to bother explaining anything to anyone. But it does feel like a huge misstep that he never actually tries to convince Alina to his side in general. His high handed “I am so reasonable and you are so stupid” schtick may be great for his ego but it’s not really conducive to getting her to see his side of things.

ALSO OPTING TO KILL MAL INSTEAD OF ACTUALLY BARGAINING HIS LIFE FOR ALINA’S COOPERATION??? Once again, great character beat. But also really, really stupid of him.

And then, he somehow manages to lose the capital despite a successful coup? How?? Why??? Sir ,you have your own literal army that’s only loyal to you 😭😭😭From what I can tell he also only loses the capital because he chose to leave instead of holding it. So. Maybe don’t do that 😭😭

From S&S on, it’s harder to guess what he’s up to in real time. But the choices of his we do see continue to be colored by needless vindictiveness, petulance, and a volatile temper. He talks so much about his unending patience yet he never actually demonstrates it! Almost everything he does feels like a bad choice or a potentially clever one that he immediately undercuts because of his own shortsightedness. This remains true all the way to RoW where his plan to enter the stage as a saint is more about a single decisive dramatic moment (that goes very poorly) rather than actually putting in the legwork to leverage his following to accumulate real power or to gather an actual army. He barely even takes the time to familiarize himself with the playing field. It’s the equivalent of a get rich quick scheme 😭😭

I feel like he has pretty much every advantage throughout these books! It’s so easy to picture a scenario where he takes control of the country and keeps it, or slowly persuades Alina to listen to his points. Idk all he has to really do on that front is to wait a couple hundred years so that everyone she knows dies, and to not? commit? very obviously unnecessary and impossible to justify mass murders??

So idk “Where would he be if he was smart” winning literally everything?

The Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern

Ok so this book was like…SUPER disappointing? I read it expecting to love it because it just had that kind of vibe…and it was just so interesting. For one, the book had no actual chapters but instead section headings? There were no chapter numbers. Very odd. Also, the characters felt so distant. I think I read a good 60-70 pages of this book and I felt absolutely NOTHING for our two main characters. I probably would recommend this book if you like boring bored, idk

The Cruel Prince (reread) - Holly Black

February 11th, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is my second full read of this book, and I have to say, this book is a lot better read as a politically-based plot instead of a romance. Don’t get me wrong, I love the way the romance builds in this series, but it’s a lot easier to enjoy when you’re not anticipating anything happening in Jude’s love life. I read this book originally after hearing rave reviews about the romance in it, and while I’ll say those reviews were not wrong, it was frustrating to read almost the entire book with absolutely no romance whatsoever.

There is so much to love about this book. Jude is a very compelling main character, and, despite being a little insane, she’s a very lovable main character. She’s very bold and passionate, but she’s not just a one-dimensional character. It’s very easy to get into her head and understand how her brain works, and seeing the adventures she goes on is thrilling.

There’s not much in the way of major side characters for the first two thirds of this book, and I found that I actually don’t mind it. Jude is a very entertaining and interesting character on her own that she doesn’t really need supporting characters to help carry a scene.

Cardan is not a major character in this book, but I adore him at every turn anyways. Once he stops playing the antagonist, almost every line he delivers is incredible, and I absolutely love the way he speaks. The way that he and Jude banter closer to the end of the book leaves me with anticipation for what’s to come in their romance (even though I’ve already read it!) Their chemistry builds with each scene they share, and I have to say that their relationship is definitely my favorite part of the book.

The Wicked King (reread) - Holly Black

February 12th, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was as fun as I remember it being. It begins five months after the events of the last book, and Jude hasn’t found a way to get along with Cardan just yet. Seeing the two of them dance around each other and pretend their chemistry is hatred is uproariously funny, and the way that they speak to each other throughout this book is absolutely lovely to read.

But don’t be fooled, this book is not mostly romance. Jude plays her role as the true ruler of Elfhame, and while doing so, she leaves Cardan out of the loop quite a bit. The two of them fight quite a bit because of this, and while this isn’t the main conflict of the book, it fed into it quite a bit.

The number of parties in this book had me absolutely feral, and I love to see Jude and Cardan dance together. Both times they danced were unlikely circumstances, and the dance they had near the end of the book…ooh. That scene is one of my absolute favorite scenes in this entire series. The way the two of them finally (sort of) let the other in after that scene too? UGH. It makes me go insane.

This book certainly did NOT suffer from middle book syndrome, and after recently reading a book that most definitely did, I am extremely grateful. Honestly, this book might be my favorite of the three, but I’m only about a quarter of the way through Queen of Nothing, so we’ll see how I feel in a few days when I finally get around to finishing it.

The Roommate Pact - Allison Ashley

February 15th, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’ll be honest, this book was kind of fun trash. Don’t get me wrong, it was a good book, but there was just something about it that gave me the vibe that I was reading book junk food. The characters were fun, the trauma was well-written, and the plot was good and probably realistic for two people in their mid-thirties.

One gripe I had with it was that half the time the characters felt like teenagers, though. If I wanted to read a book about teenagers, I’d read about teenagers. It was very odd to read about an NP and a firefighter and then have them act like 16-year-olds.

Overall, it was a pretty easy read and I had a good time, so I’d say it was worth it. It was the book I read on my Kindle while I was taking baths for this month, so…🤷🏻‍♀️ it was good bath reading or something.

The Titan’s Curse - Rick Riordan

February 17th, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We’re finally back on the Percy Jackson grind! After waiting a month…because two people at the library refused to turn their books…(I kind of hate the new library policies, but I digress).

This book was just…fun! I find it interesting that despite this series following a linear and connected storyline, it doesn’t seem to have a distinct vibe. Each book I read in this series is extremely separate from the last in the terms of the feeling the world gives me, and it’s actually quite enjoyable!

This book brought a bunch of new characters into the mix and deepened our understanding of the world and the characters within it, and I really enjoyed that! It was also an extremely easy read after reading YA/NA fantasy for the past few months, so that was really nice. I was a bit horrified to look up the Heroes of Olympus after reading this and realize all of those books are between 500 and 600 pages, but we’ll leave that problem for when we get there.

Kissing Kosher - Jean Meltzer

February 18th, ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Honestly, this book was a huge disappointment. After how much I loved this author’s other book, The Matzah Ball, I expected to love this one too, but I just didn’t find myself as in love with the characters. It was just kinda…meh.

The Queen of Nothing (reread) - Holly Black

February 19th, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was a masterpiece from start to finish. Watching Jude weasel her way back into the kingdom and spy on her enemies was so much fun!

Of course, it wouldn’t be the final book in a fantasy series without a bit more romance. Jude and Cardan finally confessed their feelings to each other, albeit in a bit of a roundabout way at first. The rising romantic tension between the two of them throughout this book was definitely the best part of it. I especially enjoyed watching Jude’s feelings for Cardan snowball as she realized how much she really loved him.

The entire main plot of this book was AMAZING. I really appreciated the way Cardan finally proved himself as king in the latter half of the book, and I loved watching him grow in his confidence over the throne. he and Jude both seemed to grow into their roles quite a bit more in this book as well as proving themselves as spies.

Overall, I don’t really think any review I could write could do this book justice. I think it is probably my favorite book in the entire series, though the second book is a CLOSE second.

The Battle of the Labyrinth - Rick Riordan

February 21st, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

SO much happened in this book, and despite the fact that not as much happened plot-wise as I expected, it was a great read. Some of my favorite characters from past books were brought back for this book’s quest, and so much happened between the characters in this book.

One thing I was super excited about in this book is that Percy and Annabeth’s relationship is finally going somewhere. I love how slow this slow-burn is, but I can’t wait to see Percy finally realize how he feels about her.

One thing I have to say about this series is that while it deals with dark themes, it doesn’t feel nearly as dark and creepy as HP did when I got to book five (sorry, HP lovers! That series got creepy after book four!) and I really appreciated that. Nothing about this book was creepy enough for me to want to put it down, and that was refreshing.

The Last Olympian - Rick Riordan

I definitely didn’t read this in one night. I swear. It totally didn’t happe-

This book was a completely different experience from the other four. It was essentially one big battle, and usually I don’t like reading battles, but this one was exciting to read. It brought back ALL the characters, liked or not, and it was so much fun.

We got to meet quite a few of the gods in this book, and that was fun. We also got a Hades cameo, which was awesome after not seeing him for…what…four books? Three? I don’t even remember anymore. We also got a lot more about little Nico, and I love him, so that was very enjoyable for me.

Percy and Annabeth finally got together!!!!! Yippee!!!!

Do I lose brain cells every time I go on the Stranger Things subreddit and read an anti-Byler post? Yes. Do I keep doing so? Also yes. Why? Idk. Notice there’s not an intelligent thought in sight. Everyone regurgitates the same stale, boring, mind-numbing “arguments” against Byler like broken records. Here in Byler nation, we have thoughtfulness. We have clever analysis. We carefully study the themes, parallels, and symbols used in the show. On Reddit, there seems to an anti-analysis, anti-intellectual mindset. So weird.

“We’ve built up mac and cheese since season 1.” Okay, first of all, “building up a relationship” has no bearing on whether it’ll be endgame or not. Plenty of relationships in shows have been built-up and then ended for one reason or another. Break-ups happen. And Season 3 and 4 explicitly brought to the forefront all the ways that the Miami Dolphins are flopping. But I suppose that was just for no reason, right? Plus, Mike and El weren’t really “built-up” throughout the show; they jumped into a romantic relationship extremely quickly. The opposite of a slow burn. But you know what was built up…

“Mike and Will got barely any development since Will was in the UD and possessed for the first two seasons.” Ah, the old “Will is just a plot device” take. Okay, that’s just false. Will was taken to the UD, and he was possessed, but these storylines explicitly showed how important Will is to Mike, and they also don’t detract from Will’s main character status. Season 2 was literally all about Byler’s dynamic, and the fact that Mike stayed by Will’s side even though he wasn’t acting like himself for portions of it, even though it was a dangerous situation, did more to build up Byler’s dynamic than Season 3’s “summer of love” did for Mace Windu.

“Mike is straight, there’s no proof that he’s gay whatsoever.” 🤔🤔 Do you look at your totally platonic bestie with absolute adoration in your eyes, like they are light personified, like they hung the moon and stars? Do you say that asking to be their friend was the best thing you’ve ever done? Do you consistently have romantically coded conversations with your bestie and promise to go crazy together with them? Do you gaze longingly at your bestie’s lips like a deer pants for water? Do you have something to share with the class?

“Majority of them are young kids who have nothing else to do and want to force some imaginary gay relationship that don’t exist! EDIT: But I’m not homophobic, I swear!” Bestie, that sounds homophobic. You are calling Byler imaginary and insinuating that we’re delusional for shipping it, even though it’s literally semi-canon. If one cares about Will as a character, why wouldn’t they ship him with the boy he’s in love with? It may not be fully canon yet, but it’s literally not imaginary. And you are dismissing “young kids” for wanting representation and seeing themselves in Will and Mike, but you would NEVER dismiss “young kids” from shipping literally any hypothetical straight relationship in any show ever. Your beef is with “young, delusional queer kids,” and that’s homophobic and deeply cruel and invalidating.

“There is zero chance of it happening. Absolutely nothing in the show is going in that direction.” The very clear love triangle imagery in season 4, the entire plot of Mike not being able to say or write ILY to his girlfriend, El’s obvious set up for an arc of independence, the final shot of season 4, the entire miscommunication painting plot…

“The only people who think Byler is gonna happen don’t understand good storytelling. The point of it is that it’s not gonna happen.” Hahaha, we don’t understand good storytelling? The point of Byler is that it’s not gonna happen? If that’s true (it’s not), what a shitty and cruel “point” the Duffers are making. Yup, let’s just write our deeply traumatized, deeply kind, innocent queer teen as madly in love with his best friend, make that friend canonically what helps him not feel like a mistake, only for the “point” of that storyline to be some kind of lesson that we can’t always get what we want. “Good storytelling” in this context obviously means the surface-level, straight-forward reading of these events. Mike is in love with El because he said so. But that’s bad storytelling.

“Only dumbass little kids believe that shit.” Okay Season 3 Mike Wheeler.

“The only people forcing Mike into this weird “love triangle” are the fans/crazy shippers.” Actually it’s the LITERAL show. It’s not like we’re arguing there’s a love triangle between Dustin, Fred, and Troy. We’re literally following the plot explicitly set up by Season 4. Do you not understand the painting storyline? Even if Byler somehow ended up being one-sided, it still is a love triangle, so drop the quotes.

And if you are willing to concede that there won’t be any new characters, what a terrible ending it would be for Will to just end up sad and alone while all the other characters get to fall in love.

What is a headcanon you have about a hypmic character that lives in your head rent free despite it being an extremely tiny detail and/or having no significance to the plot whatsoever. Does not have to be canon compliant.

I’ll start: Gentaro can’t swim. Idk why my brain insists upon this being true, it just does. I imagine he (a) will not remove his clothes to get in the water in the first place and (b) if he ever did get into the water, he would not have the strength to keep himself afloat with how heavy his clothes get when soaked.

I feel like the writers were a literal joke to landon, hope and handon too. They probably didn't want to kill the main member again so they went with landon. I feel like it was a slap in the face and writers were laughing in his face and kept doing it along with putting dirt on him. They always made it like they wanted to get rid of him. I completely agree! They treated Landon and Hope, both separately and as a couple, like trash. Idk if them killing Landon was even about them not wanting to kill someone else, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’d just wanted to torture Landon more. While also trying to appease certain fans and probably thinking it would help the show, jmo.

But yeah it was absolutely a slap in the face, it was like the writers thrived off of hurting Landon and insulting him. I agree that they really just seemed to want to get rid of him. Idk if they didn’t completely just so that Aria could stay on the show, but it seemed their goal was to give him as little screen time as possible while still being able to use Landon as a plot device and punching bag. I still can’t believe all that they put him through, and it literally was for nothing in the end. And on top of all that they had him just accepting everything in limbo? It couldn’t have been more unrealistic for his character, or more insulting.

But ikr they at least could’ve let him be with Raf! If they wanted him gone so much and to not let him be with Hope, at the very least, they could’ve let him be with his brother somehow. But nah, Landon’s not allowed to have anything, no happiness whatsoever. It’s as if the writers had decided to think of the absolute worst they could do to Landon, and taking away part of his soul while keeping him trapped alone and having him believe it’s where he belongs is what they came up with. It really shows how much they hated him and didn’t understand his character. And yeah Landon was basically just manipulated by the ferryman. Even though, realistically, I think he’s smart enough that he wouldn’t have been tricked, that’s basically the only way to make any sense of it because Landon never would’ve made that choice.

And true about Hope, Raf, and Wade. Though sometimes I had a hard time believing Wade really cared about Landon tbh because of how inconsistent the writers were. It’s like they so badly wanted no one to care about Landon that they went out of their way to avoid writing anything that might involve it.

But anyways yes thank you for asking! I was meaning to get something out but I had to gather myself after the announcement because I didn't think we'd be getting it this soon lmao

Most of my theories about the show have actually been proven to be correct so far!! My ideas were either it was gonna be at summer camp (which ended up being Abstinence Camp) or it would be around ghosts in Hatchetfield High (which the trailer confirmed) Also confirmed twice on both accounts that it would be a slasher like I thought.

Another big thought I've had for a while that I am absolutely sticking to is that it will include virgin sacrifice. The train of thought here is virgin = prude, must die = killing for a specific purpose. Also virgin sacrifice is a common horror element Hatchetfield has yet to touch, and before we met Grace I was thinking she was going to be a virgin final girl in a slasher show. Now that we know Grace I'm not sure how I feel about that idea anymore, Steph seems more final girl to me, but we know for sure its gonna have Grace and Steph.

I had also been thinking that Grace and Pete (previously only known as HCB) were like best friends and that it would be about them trying to survive, now that we know Pete we know this isn't true, but I feel like he still has to be involved somehow. And in the description for the trailer it says "the biggest losers at Hatchetfield High are being hunted by an angry spirit" I have to think Pete is kind of a loser (no offense) and that he is one of the kids being hunted, even though I wouldn't describe him as a prude, I would still describe him as a nerd. Nick has said it wasn't Pete in the trailer, but I do think they are probably gonna recast him. Nick doesn't prefer acting and idk how Rob is doing and I'm not gonna speculate. I would prefer they recast honestly, not because I have issues with either interpretation, but because I think they need more actors for the teens instead of recycling the same ones.

And unfortunately, I don't think Alice will be super involved in the show, because Mariah is already playing Steph who will be a major character. This also means we probably won't see a lot of Lex because Angela is playing Grace. (This is a gripe I have with SK casting actually they are setting themselves up with so many limits on who can interact with who). I do think however we might see Hannah, because we know in 2020 she is a high schooler and in the same class with Steph. I also think we will see Tom in some form because he's a teacher. I'm not sure about Rose because in Killer Track she had a grad photo hanging in her house, but I'd like to see her!

My guess is that the show will take place in 2020. TGWDLM and BF both took place in 2018, NMT1 in 2019, and NMT2 in 2020. See the trend seems to be that they take place a year before real time, so you would think it should take place in 2022, but Steph and Grace are both 18 in 2020, so it has to be 2020 or earlier. I think it's a little likely to take place in 2018 if they wanna include Alice or Deb, but idk.

It might have just been a joke but they name dropped a Brenda in the trailer, I've seen no one talk about this! Like I said it was probably just a joke but I think Brenda might be a new character like the high school mean girl or something. And I hope they cast someone who doesn't yet have a Hatchetfield teen yet for any new characters so that we can get more combos of characters who can interact. Bryce and Jae need some teen characters.

I know Nick said that Nibbly was not involved in the plot whatsoever, because before we saw Nibbly but knew of him people thought he was the NPMD villain. I actually don't think this show will have a specific Lord in Black. But I do think the Black and White will be included, my theory is that the ghost is a soul trapped in the Black and White. If any B&W entities are included I'd say it would be Webby. But if I'm right and we do have virgin sacrifice then they might be being sacrificed to a Lord, but we don't see them.

It's possible we might see Holloway since at the end of Killer Track she was working at the school, maybe she's moved on from the Holloway identity or maybe she's with Duke. I could see them trying to figure out what's going on with the ghost, Holloway says she can trap them in jars! And to address the elephant in the room, yes I think we will see Mcnamara. Everyone has been saying it, this is the Paranormal part of the PEIP name, he has to be there.

I have been planning to see this show live for 2 and a half years now, I have built my tumblr brand around it, I am fixated on it. I don't know exactly what's gonna happen but apparently I have a good track record for guessing things associated with it, so we'll see!

I've never been able to get over how mean the BBC Sherlock fandom was to fans of Elementary

While I wished the BBC show hadn't gone to shit, I can't help but feel that that was some kind of divine justice for calling it the best Sherlock Holmes adaptation ever and insulting anyone who'd disageee, even when Moffat and Gatiss's bad writing was there from the very begining, only becoming more prevalent and obvious ('cause that's the only way people can see something's bad) as seasons went by.

Sherlock was asshole to everyone in that show. With characters like him, this is balanced out by their intelligence: sure they can be mean, but they're the only ones who can solve the problem at hand. However, the writing was so idiotic that I what I saw was this guy being an dick to those around him, making shitty deductions, and being rewarded with being right and being the smartest person in the room, because that's what the plot needed, not because there was some actual logic behind his reasoning.

In other words, it was the writing itself what to me broke the immersion and made Benedict's Sherlock such an unlikable character.

Now, I'm not gonna claim that Elementary is the perfect adaptation or anything (it's not even my favorite, just one I'm very fond of), but after being mocked for prefering it to Sherlock and being told I wasn't a true fan of Holmes... I've come to hate the BBC version so much that now I can't see an image of Cumberbatch's Holmes without rolling my eyes and cringing at the memory of those Sherlock fans so ready to defend poor writing with fan theories even more incredibly stupid than the already nonesensical plot. I see Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller's version of Watson and Holmes, and I immediately want to go on adventures with them, I'm invested in their struggles and their dynamic as a duo.

Also, I was never bullied by the Elementary fandom, so there's also that probably because there's like five people in that fandom.

I remember years ago seeing a post (idk were... Tumblr, Twitter, idk) of someone saying something along the lines of "When will the creator of Elementary confess that they made Watson a woman so that they can ship her with Sherlock without it being gay? So homophobic!" Good thing BBC Sherlock ended up confessing his love to John and marrying him, and there was definetely no queer baiting whatsoever!

One thing solely missing from dead dove maxiel fic is age gap emphasis. Like sometimes there’s a cute mention but it has zero impact on their actual relationship or behavior or like other’s peoples reactions, like in ‘canon’ max was 16!!! when max signed and started testing and the media was all up in arms about his age, like that should totally carry over to his relationship. Also that he was kinda forced to grow up under the media and how that impacts him mentally and how his personality allows him maturity in that way. Also how at the same time his younger siblings were being born. Idk max is just So Interesting. You could murder the dove in hundreds of ways but squab is so under utilized honestly. Lots of things to exploit here, for daniel, jos, christian, helmut ect ect

No literally! He was like... a kid... I know age gaps aren't really actually harped on that hard, because they're all rich as fuck and no one gives a rat's ass what a rich man does. But still, be serious... they would get at least some scrutiny. Someone would say hey is this not a little weird? Even removed from homophobia, someone (me) would be weirded out. But of course Max thinks he is ready for everything. Why wouldn't he? Everyone in his life told him he was. Everyone around him failed him.

My favorite dead dove, like, plot/theme mechanisms are like. Subverting either their stereotypical roles which we know are Max as anxious and pessimistic and Daniel as happy-go-lucky and optimistic; or their narrative arcs (giving Daniel everything he wanted ever and forcing him to reckon with the consequences, or isolating and dooming Max with no closure - when both are not true to them irl whatsoever!). Like for example, Daniel as well-liked and extremely successful in a prestigious environment. Or Max put into the "dead girl" horror trope or "dead child" trope, ie Danny Latimer in Broadchurch, Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks, or Alice Palmer from Lake Mungo. Max's irl story is insanely good and healing with closure for HIM! So because they're so WRONG they catch your attention... and expand the range of either character.
