He is bitter when you come to him for advice. He realizes that you don't have any feelings of that sort for him, and while he doesn't quite blame you, he's still upset about it.

He'll tell you to take them on a walk and then tell them, a simple yet somewhat affective method, before he chases you out of his room, telling you he's busy and has work to do.

When you ask him to walk with you, he assumes it's because you want to tell him how your confession went, and while he doesn't actually want to know, he'll agree and join you.

When you confess to him? He feels both smug and stupid. On one side, of course it's him you wanted to confess too. Someone like you deserves the best, and that is clearly him. But he also feels stupid for not realizing.

➸ MAMMON

Wait, what? Who are you confessing too? Why do you need to confess to someone? Who is it?

Your best bet with him is to ask him a hypothetical question about how he would want someone to confess to him; he probably won't think too much about it if you ask him like that.

He will give you a pretty detailed story on how he wants to be confessed too, and then he'll also tell you how he would confess to someone if he liked them.

When you confess to him, doing your best to replicate the details you remembered of his carefully crafted narrative, he is neatly dying over how hot his face is.

This seems straight out of a dream to him.

➸ LEVIATHAN

Oh sure he would probably think so– WHAT!?

He'll start answering your question absent-mindedly, not really processing what you said. And when he does, he'll freeze and turn to you in surprise.

He'll ask you why you're asking him of all people, this really isn't his forté! And then he'll get really jealous because why are you confessong to someone that isn't him? No, why would you confess to him anyway?

He'll mumble something about anime and then he'll ignore you for the rest of the week, too jealous that someone else has caught your attention.

Hint; he would like a love letter. And when you realize that and write him one, and he reads it, he looks like he might be dying from how emberassed he is. He straight up faints.

➸ SATAN

He sort of just takes the question as a hypothetical one from the start, he doesn't really think there is someone you like that way. So, he will happily brainstorm some ideas of how he would like to confess his feelings for someone. He would like something romantic, like a song, a poem. Maybe a picnic? He has a lot of opinions on this..

Because he didn't actually believe that you were asking him for advice, and you were just making a conversation, he is actually very shocked when you confess to him. And he's flustered. Very flustered. Take it in, you won't see him like that again. He feels a little silly for not realizing, but he's too happy to actually care.

Much like Satan, Asmodeus gets very eager. Though he very much processes that you're asking for advice on how you should confess. He'll ask you all sorts of questions on what type of person they are, to help brainstorm the best ideas on how you can confess. He's.. eager when he hears all the wonderful things you have to say about them, and he ignores the pang of envy.

He asks you to keep him updated on how it goes. Do they reject you? They better not!

However, when you end up confessing to him? With the methods you both talked about? And he realizes that you were talking about him? The squeal of pure, unfiltered joy he gives you is to die for.

➸ BEELZEBUB

Beelzebub is a little dense about his own emotions, and he's also very honest. So when you ask him about it, he doesn't think about it much, and just says he would try to keep what they like in mind as he plans it.

However, once you go off with that, he'll probably sulk in sadness for a little bit. He was going to confess to you and now he's too late? He ends up scrapping all his confession plans when you ask him about it.

When you tell him how you feel he, much like Asmodeus, just reacts with pure joy, thought less loud compared to his strawberry blonde brother. He will tell you of his own plans after you confess to him.

➸ BELPHEGOR

Tells you that he would just tell them immediately the first moment he sees them. Less work that way, and you don't have to wait that long. Just get it over with, ya' know?

No, he doesn't know. He's lying to himself because he would never do that. But if you seem unhappy with that answer, he'll shrug and mumble something about stars before going back to sleep.

If you take his original advice and just blurt out your feelings for him right there and then, he almost won't believe you. His brain short circuits.

If you take his mumbling seriously for your confession, and include stars somehow, he might cry when you confess to him and he sees how much effort you willing to put in for him.

AITA for ignoring my friend's relationship and waiting for it to end?

Background: I (20F) have known my best friend (19X) since we were 14. We've gone through a few different friend groups (nothing dramatic, just fading relationships) but have always stuck with each other, partially because we are both autistic. I know them very well and they have said that I am their main support system. They have BPD which causes them to get obsessed with someone, which normally I would not think is my business, but they have a history of getting obsessed with people who hurt them, and I've always tried to warn them if I felt someone had bad intentions.

They've recently escaped their abusive household which is really exciting but I worry might make them feel lonelier because they've been getting into more of these situations recently. There were a couple minor relationships where someone broke a boundary causing them to have a breakdown, but neither affected their safety. And a few months ago they were talking to an older man online who I got weird vibes from but only mildly hinted to them he was creepy, which made me feel guilty when it ended up being way worse than I thought and became a disaster.

About three weeks ago, they started roleplaying with some guy on twitter, which I didn't think much of since they mainly just talked about what a good writer he is and he seemed fine. But then they asked what I would think if they started dating him even though he's in his 30s and I kinda thought they were just looking for a reason not to do it, so I said no he's too old for you. But then they started trying to convince me it was a good idea which only made me more hesitant. Their evidence in favor included that he used to be in the military (they know i hate the military so I do not know why they admitted this) and pictures of him (I am gay so this would not convince me regardless). They seemed surprised by my negative reaction, I said sorry but you asked for my honest opinion, they understood and I thought this was the end of it.

But now they're legitimately online dating and they talk about him all the time, they don't seem to understand that I am not a fan of this relationship and expect me to react positively to everything he does. I don't react negatively or completely ignore them I just go "ok" or "cool." They might not notice this because I often have times where I can't speak much so it's unfortunately normal for me.

I haven't noticed any other red flags from this guy other than the age gap and the military thing, but those seem a lot worse to me because of my friend's history and penchant for ignoring red flags, so I feel like if something worse was going on I wouldn't even know. Apparently he's going to come visit them in August (it's January as I send this) and I feel like that's enough time that the relationship will either die out or end horribly before he actually has the chance to physically be around them.

I feel torn in two different ways. On the one hand, I know that I'm paranoid and overprotective, not to mention scared of men, so I could just be overreacting to the situation. I don't think he's going to murder them or anything, but they're sensitive and I don't want them to add someone to the long list of people who traumatized them. They ARE a legal adult so it technically shouldn't be a big deal but they're the first person to be creeped out by legal age gaps, they just don't seem to apply this logic to themselves. I'm also not super experienced in relationships, I've only had a few short casual ones so I am not at all an expert.

On the other hand, I felt like shit when the situation with the other guy blew up even though they never blamed me for it. I feel like I should be doing more to dissuade them but they didn't seem to care when I warned them before so I feel like it's a lost cause and I don't wanna be pushy, I want them to genuinely understand why it's not a good idea.

I feel like I'm damned if I do damned if I don't, so I've kinda just settled on passively not really giving them feedback on the relationship in the hopes they'll figure it out themselves? As always I check in on them, try to give them positive attention so they're not desperate for it, and if the relationship actually lasts til August I'll make sure I know their location so they can tell me if they feel unsafe.

I feel like an asshole no matter what I do, so what I'm asking specifically is AITA for basically just ignoring the situation hoping it solves itself? Either because I should be supporting it or because I should bring up my concerns with them again.

chapter 145 thoughts!

what even was this chapter, y'all. i'm getting a migraine.

While it certainly wasn't actively bad, it basically hits on enough of the issues I've been having with the Movie Arc that if you've been reading my chapter reviews lately, you could probably write this one yourself. Weird pacing, skipping over interesting parts of the movie, continued framing of AQRB as a shallow gag and failing to follow on any of the implied development from or literally any referenced fallout of the kiss in 143? It's all here, babes. It would ultimately just be boring and redundant for me to go over all that at length again, so I won't.

I will however say that I'm pretty disappointed we're blasting through what had the potential to be some really interesting bits of postmortem characterization for Ai, even filtered through 15YL. I don't mind the manga breezing past scenes we saw firsthand but like… how did Ai react when she realized she was pregnant? How did she feel, especially given that Spica once again emphasized her longing for a family of her own? IDK. The way the story is suddenly jolting forwards in these last few chapters and skipping such huge chunks of Ai's life ultimately feels very strange and I don't know what to make of it yet.

Everyone reacting to Crow Girl's acting was pretty funny though I'm kind of exhausted with Ruby's Gaga-For-Oniichansensei Gag Character flanderization. IDK if my tolerance for it is just decreasing or if it really is amping up, but at least in the 125-137 stretch I at least got the sense that they could be in the same room and have a normal conversation but ever since 139, it feels that bit more relentless. I imagine this would be less irritating if we knew how the aftermath of 143 had played out but it really seems like the manga is going to drag this out until we're all old and grey.

THAT SAID, this chapter does confirm that Aqua's hoshigan stayed white after that chapter and… eh. Who even knows what that means lol. It does at least imply that his talk with Ruby has brought him back to Baseline Aqua but Baseline Aqua is still a guy with every single mental illness on planet earth so I don't know if that's the world's biggest W quite yet. It certainly implies an improvement over double black hoshigan but… again, with Aqua being so totally cut off from the readers this whole arc and no idea of what happened in the aftermath of 143, it's impossible to make a meaningful guess as to wtf is going on with Aqua right now.

Oh yeah, uh. This chapter also I guess constitutes the reveal of how the AQRB reincarnation happened. I guess LMAO. Honestly, I don't have much to say about it other than it feels like a bit of an anticlimax for me? The idea works fine, the execution just left me… idk. Whelmed at best, underwhelmed at most. I feel like this backstory and the implied deep fondness for GRSR -> AQRB it implies doesn't really like up with the personality she displays in the Private arc but like, I kind of feel like she was tossed into the story without Akasaka having a clear idea as to what her role was even going to turn into so maybe that's not a surprise LOL

I will say I'm glad this seems to quash the theory that Aqua and Ruby were secretly capital-G Gods, instead framing it as a Tsuru no Ongaeshi type return of kindness to two otherwise mundane people. There was some fun fan theorizing around the idea, but for me personally, Oshi no Ko is most interesting when it focuses on that aspect of the story Akasaka highlighted in an interview recently, of human relationships being warped by the entertainment industry and I think an explosion of the emotional stakes to the cosmic scale of AQRB (or tbh any of the characters) being Secretly Gods All Along would be a bit of a shark jump for me and would really shift away from what I like about the series most.

That's kind of it for this one…! Not really a lot to say about this chapter, which is why most of this review was me explaining why I didn't have a lot to say about it.

okay, so i gave u some dialogue and some scenarios, but the superhero nerd in me wants to give u some tips too.

unmasking: reasons

⇴ as a way to build trust

⇴ as a way to build comradery

⇴ because they're all spidermen/spiderwomen/spiderpeople, so there's no reason to keep a secret identity in the first place

⇴ unmasking as a big plotpoint (could be the oc's climax or a way to build relationships between other characters)

unmasking yourself is personal in any circumstance. for example, even though all the spiderpeople in ATSV are seen unmasked, those people are only unmasked around the other spiderpeople, not around the people in their own universe.

when your oc is unmasking, make it a big plot point. how important is their secret identity? are they scared of unmasking after fighting the villain? what are the stakes at hand here?

unmasking: dialogue

since your oc is very pretty, think to yourself of how you would react when seeing a very beautiful person.

⇴ think of how you would respond, and then try to apply it to the other characters. of course, make sure it's not out of character.

if whatever you're thinking is not in line with what one of the characters would think, then don't include it (even if it's for the sake of storytelling).

⇴ when describing how characters are reacting, sometimes (instead of dialogue) using physical characteristics are better.

for example

"you're gorgeous!" person b gasps

person b gapes at person a for a few seconds. their eyes seem like they're bulging out of their head, and suddenly their mouth feels a lot drier than usual. a gulp escapes person b's mouth before saying, "you're gorgeous!"

doesn't that add a lot more? of course, write however you'd like, but if you really want to emphasize a character's beauty, try using physical reactions as well.

CHARACTERS

Madeline

Putting Madeline here because the first thing I noticed in the whole show is she’s ACTUALLY A FRANCOPHILE and it’s so funny ldksjfjsfksdlf. She wears a beret, and people put on a stereotypical French accent whenever they quote her djslkfjsfkfds And during the play backstage someone (I think Chloe?) runs up to her, smacks her beret off and yells “You’re not French!”

Jeremy

OH oh oh oh oh. Bac Jeremy my beloved…. I swear like 30% of Christine’s autism was generously donated to Jeremy for this production jlkdsfjdls

He has this habit where he’ll put his hands in his cardigan pockets and push his them around in front of him or on his body to feel the tension of the jacket stretching. Patrick said this quirk was based on a neurodivergent kid he knows. I don’t have photo evidence and IDK how to describe it perfectly but i did draw it here (x). It wasn't exactly like that though OTL

He does it whenever he’s nervous (so almost CONSTANTLY) up until BMC P.1 when the SQUIP tells him to take his hands out of his pockets. During that song you can see him trying to put his hands back safe in his pockets but afterwards he never does it again, even after The Play. He also doesn’t do it when he’s with Michael, even at the beginning, so I take it to mean it goes away when he’s comfortable. 

I think he flinches and cowers a lot (compared to other Jeremys, that is). Whenever Rich surprises him, Jeremy jumps and protectively throws his arms over his face. I think he reacts similarly to other people a few times - I don’t remember when exactly though… There’s also several times where he’ll stand totally petrified out of fear, like when Rich is writing “boyf” or when Chloe’s coming onto him. By all of this I basically mean it’s really obvious he’s been physically abused (presumably by Rich).

Just in general, his freakouts are very physical, he’ll kinda do these stiff arm movements or cover his face in his elbow etc. Off the top of my head this happens during Upgrade and also at the end of The Play when Christine’s singing to him.

All this to say he has a very very visible physicality to his awkwardness and I love it. I don’t just mean that on a character acting level, I also mean like if you’re sitting behind him in class your attention will actively be caught by his awkwardness. 

He also has a deeper register which he uses mostly in a joke context? He used it in normal conversation a few times too, I think more towards the end.

I noticed him standing just a little pigeon-toed near the beginning. I don’t know if this carried through the whole thing though.

Clothes: his cardigan is blackish with a blue outline, and he wears it over a green shirt with a question mark (I perceived it as a Gravity Falls shirt but might be wrong). The eminem shirt is black and I dont remember what he wears it with…. At the party he has a cyborg shirt and a visor, and after the party he has a white shirt with a flannel and khakis (or maybe light corduroys). In VIMH he has another fandom shirt on but I don’t remember what it was sorry it was 11pm ljfsdlkfjdslkfs

Mr. Heere

He seemed less depressed and more just out of touch in this one? During Two Player Game, he seems decently chipper, if annoyed, though of course he’s still unable to dress himself and unwilling to put genuine effort in with his son. 

When he says “Good talk” he gives Jeremy a friendly shoulder punch. Right before Pants Song, as usual, he says “I could ground you!” Jeremy says “I don’t think you could,” and gives his dad the same shoulder punch while saying “Good talk.” AAAAAAH.

Michael

He seemed less frenetic and anxious than the Troy!Michael I’m used to (sorry that’s my only reference for Michael lol). 

He was generally loud and exuberant. A very excitable but down-to-earth Michael. 

MITB was amazing. I was nervous because it’s obviously (obviously) the best song so there’s a lot of pressure but no it was done perfectly. Sad as fuck. Perhaps moreso because this Michael was especially normal until now. (Also because pre-MITB Jeremy was extra mean in this production)

For some reason, I found it easier to picture this Michael being a childhood & school friend? Maybe just because this production seriously pulled my psyche straight back to highschool in a way the others haven’t been able to lol. 

I maybe got the sense that he’s really trying to act like he doesn’t care as much about Jeremy as he does. 

BTW I’m obsessed with the fact that his idea of a creeper costume is a mask and a shirt that just says creeps on it. I know that’s kinda textual at this point but taken together with the mask its lkesdjfsdjflksdf

Christine

Amazing ballet (?) choreography going on during her intro. I think that might be standard Christine choreo but still! Stunning.

I could actually picture her as an averagely popular girl in this one? Not sure why. Maybe more nervous in her relationships but more confident in other contexts, but I could be pulling that out of my ass. 

I could also be thinking this because she has cool hair (space buns!) and likes Taylor Swift in this one. 

Some of her songs had these really melancholy notes where I didn’t expect them - particularly in GTIKBI Reprise (/pos! I was like oh shit!!! every time)

Rich

He has painted nails! They’re black. 

He had fruity energy the whole time but it got progressively more intense. No I can’t elaborate actually I don’t know why I perceived it like this but I did sldjkfsf

After he comes out it gets more explicit; he starts wearing a pink headband in VIMH (he also gains glasses I think? Unless they’re still Michael’s) and during bows he flashed a paper fan that had the gay flag inside. 

IMO, it was implied that the house fire was a suicide attempt. I say this for purely textual reasons -  because he doesn’t mention trying getting the SQUIP out of his head, and because Jeremy’s SQUIP later implies it was a suicide attempt. But his behavior around the fire - looking dazed while rhythmically flicking a lighter - could also indicate squipzophrenia. (Maybe it’s the same amount of implied as usual - To be fair, I’ve never really understood why Rich set a fire in the first place…)

Brooke

Very wholesome and I love her. IDK Broadway Brooke is very campy, and BAC Brooke is more like a normal sweet girl but maybe that’s just me 

Compared to Broadway, way more respectful of Jeremy’s space. She doesn’t really try to physically seduce him in upgrade instead they just have a cute lil conversation. Also when she tells Jeremy she got cheated on, she doesn’t initiate contact by petting his hair (like in Broadway) - instead the roles are reversed and they hold hands comfortingly, and Jeremy is the one to escalate that by rubbing her hand in a slightly forward way. 

Her French was awful!!! sdjkfldjsfkdsf It was the whole time but Tres Magnifique = "Trays Mag-nuh-Fike" is the one that really killed me

Not to be backhanded… but she was really good at being a bitch??? Especially the scene where she’s giving Christine advice

Later in Smartphone Hour -  J: “....because you are my closest friend-” C: “No I’m not” J: “Yeah I know….” Jenna sounds kinda genuinely bummed lol. Either she wasn’t expecting that or she’s *very* aware of it and it’s making her sad. My impression was more the latter.

During VIMH she’s wearing a sweater that’s colored like the lesbian flag??? (EDIT: the actor, Diana, said this was intentional and her Jenna is a lesbian!)

“Oh my god he is like totally getting off on that” ← right before this Jeremy starts pointing at them awkwardly from a distance, I think in an attempt to get to his locker?? 

“I like gay people” - the way Chloe says this is kinda like “idk what the big deal is because *i* think gay people are soooo neat” which got a lot of audience laugh. I think she was talking to Jenna but I don’t remember 

“I don’t wanna be a baller” (or whenever the class scene is) - Jeremy’s sitting in the back of class and everyone turns to throw paper balls at him. I was like oh my god he’s being genuinely bullied so hard in this one…. Then again maybe that’s just how he feels?

There’s this awesome chair choreo at the end where everyone’s laying down chairs in front of Jeremy for him to walk on and taking them away from the back to put back in the front as he makes his way downstage.

Scene: Michael's "You don't have to do this!" kind of came across as a shout of protest. (But of course still tempered with, "of course i'll make fun of you forever if you don't)

Play Rehearsal

"This is where you meet for the swim team" --- Instead of looking confused, Jeremy immediately acts like ok byeee - he might be eager to back out of the conversation and/or immediately accepts her answer as literal and wants to leave asap out of embarrassment.

“I also have a touch of ADD” - she trails off and stands there kind of in a daze for a moment, before remembering that she’s in the middle of a song. 

“And can I mention that was really one of my best roles, DID YOU SEE THAT?!" She shouts this very proudly. And after her 'do you find that?' bit she doesn’t give Jeremy time to even try to respond, so it’s a little less rude lol. 

Jeremy was very anxious, and somewhat in a bad way? As in the exchange was a bit off-putting to him.

Scene: “thank god the popular kids are here” - there are SO MANY kids entering. I’m not sure what to make of it! Popular as in everyone’s popular compared to Jeremy and Christine? Or is this a whole clique? Or is Reyes just talking about the popular kids and the other guys also just show up? 

Mrs. Reyes: ~"Our funds will be diverted. To the frisbee golf team. What even is frisbee golf?" Across the room, Jake holds up a frisbee and silently points at it, trying to get Reyes' attention. She doesn't notice.

After scene: Jake’s “pressure to be the best at everything” is said very genuinely, not for laughs at his arrogance which is how I usually read it

The Squip Enters

Scene: Payless: “Wolverine” was great djklsfjdsf I’ve never thought about him before. (It was also the actor’s birthday!) When they enter he’s playing the knife-finger game. He threatens Jeremy with the knife at some point (either “400 dollars” or “all sales are final!” I think?). I can’t really describe the character acting but he was very entertainingly unhinged. He's called “Scary Stockboy” in the script & playbill and I thought that was a misnomer until the scene happened lmao. No that was accurate. 

Scene: when they enter the food court there’s like a photo of a mall food court on the back wall but not from the perspective of the scene at all it was like a background that abstractly tells you where you are?? As someone who loves kitsch I enjoyed this, it happens with a few other scenes too 

There’s a couple making out obnoxiously at the mall that someone (I think it was Michael?) had to step over to get to the table. I think they had some great thematically relevant background acting in this scene but I cannot remember it exactly I am so sorry OTL

Michael is buying Ecto-Cooler! It tastes like ghosts.

Jeremy “mourns in his chili fries” by laying his head down on the table. Jake and Christine sit at the table together without noticing him. Then Jeremy pops up and they have the usual exchange (“I didn’t see you!” “Yeah, you’re kind of hard to notice”). I thought that was a really neat staging!! And it makes more sense why he even tries to talk to her in this scene lol

Mild discomfort - The first half Jeremy just stands next to the table and kinda screams in pain. Then the second half he falls to the ground and is thrashing, again mostly just in pain. (Pretty sure that’s how every production goes but I think the intensity of the spasming is pretty variable so I’m describing it here)

When the SQUIP first appears, he offers to appear as Kermit the Frog, Barack Obama, and Gilbert Gottfried, and does a little impression for each one:

The imitations the Squip does are as follows: Kermit the Frog “hi ho Kermit the frog here, we’re gonna fix your life Yayyyyy”, Obama “My fellow Squip, if sync up we can change this loser” and Gilbert Gottfried “So Grandma and the dog are on the table…” - Courtesy of director Chris Guell because I couldn't remember them OTL (thank you!!!)

Also in the middle of this Jeremy says "That's a terrible Obama impression..."

Be more Chill p.1

Brooke and Chloe are shopping on the upstage side of the clothes rack; when Jeremy picks out the girls shirt, Brooke appears through the gap in the clothes and surprises him.

After the song, one of the ensemble steals the clothes rack and the mall cop chases him off stage in a very cartoonishly stiff sprint.

Do you wanna ride?

After the first rejection, Brooke goes to Chloe, who points out the satchel she has belted around her waist. As she starts to sing again she slowly unbuckles it and holds it behind her back. 

Jeremy is very into it by the end and the girls have him dancing along with the music. I think you can see that in one of the promo videos too :P

Be More Chill p.2

Scene: When Jeremy’s going to bed after the mall, instead of sleepily singing, he uses a silly deep voice to say something like “yeah be more chill i’m gonna be more chill i’m gonna be so chill that ice is relatively warm”

After Rich talks to Jeremy (“hey, tallass, where’s my money?” and then they sync up) he spots a girl across the stage and yells “Hey, where’s my money?” then chases her down the hall. 

Guy that I’d Kinda be Into

Scene: during the rehearsal - JR: "Bring me patient zero!" Then Chloe, sitting on the ground, looks through her script for like 45 seconds until finding her line: "Cough!"

At “I’ve been activating your pheromones” - Jeremy starts and looks at his armpits, then as the song continues he slowly pulls his arms up to rest behind his head, it was very comedic djflkdsf. He also uses one hand to waft from his armpit before returning to that position. Guy...

I think this is also the scene he uses a script to hide his boner??

They were so cute at the end!!! Just sitting next to each other in rehearsal and kinda leaning in towards each other. Very real very high school. 

Upgrade

Scene: While Jeremy and SQUIP argue about Eminem, Brooke is (silently) describing the accident. She mimes hitting a hockey puck, then being impaled in the guts repeatedly.

Instead of literal bleachers (at least visually), Brooke and Jeremy go sit on the top of the stairs that lead off of the stage and into the audience. They kinda playfully walk around the railings and stuff, and at the point in the Broadway version where they start aggressively making out, instead they just sit next to each other and talk and it’s very cute :) 

Jeremy’s freaking the fuck out in the middle and it’s so obviously sensory overload auauuauuauaugh. He was like contorting to cover his head in his arms. Guy…

Halloween

Brooke’s costume is a sexy dalmatian! She has an eyespot and a black and white skirt + other spotty white clothes. Jeremy’s cyborg costume only extends to the shirt & a visor. I think it matched with the squip’s visor?

THE PROJECTOR…. On the background was the funniest background it could possibly be it was like a graphic of a cartoon skeleton holding a wooden sign that said “Jake’s Halloween Party”. IDK if that’s a poster he got printed or if it’s an extremely camp way of abstractly giving us the setting or what but I WAS LOSING IT SLKDJFKDSJFSD 

I WISH I had a picture of it, but in lieu of that I recreated it for you and I swear it was like 95% exactly like this. just projected on the wall behind the stage.

Do you wanna hang?

Right before this scene, there’s a huge group choreo where people dance with partners, and in the last move one partner spins the other one down, who lands on the floor looking up at them. Jeremy ends up on the floor and Chloe walks up and stands over him while inviting him to come with her. 

TW - This scene is always sexual assault, but the tone felt especially dark this time – maybe it was just seeing it live, though. 

Jeremy’s standing frozen still as the song starts and kind of visibly recoiling as Chloe walks around him. She walks behind him and shoves her hands into his coat pockets, which makes him flinch. Extra upsetting because like I said before I think his coat pockets are kind of a place of safety for him :(((

Pretty sure the SQUIP's Japanese was different from the Broadway. Wasn't sure quite what he said, but it I think it *didnt* include these from the Broadway one: お腹が空いた (I'm hungry) and お疲れ様 ('pleasure doing business with you,' i think?)

Michael in the Bathroom

Scene: Jeremy seems very shaken after DYWH and sits on the bathtub sadly; when Michael reveals himself Jeremy flips out.

Michael talks about “his clever disguise” and makes monster growls (meant as creeper hisses?) - I think with the tone that he’s trying to get Jeremy to respond to the joke, or point out the reference or something. When that fails, he starts getting serious. 

“Get out of my way, loser” is delivered very confidently. 

After Michael says he’s on his period, Jenna opens the door a crack to hand him a tampon dsjfkldsjflkdsjf. He throws it in the bathtub later at “I’m a creeper in a bathroom….”

Also of course, he’s in a creeper mask lol

Song: WONDERFULLY done. Honestly don’t have much to say it was just great. I get desensitized to that song after hearing it so much, but seeing it live definitely brought a spark to it.

“And I look in the mirror and the present is clearer…” section is like the *key* part of this song to me and Connor Introna did it really well. His voice started breaking at mirror, and of course he did the little sob and everything it was just chefs kiss

Guy that I’d Kinda be Into Reprise

When Jeremy asks why Rich didn’t give him a warning and Rich starts saying “warning” over and over, he says it at a steady rhythm until he gets off stage. Then Jeremy tries to rouse a drunken partier to say “So that was weird…” and Rich’s “Warning” randomly interrupts Jeremy like 3 times to comedic effect before he can get the words out

"Popular people are messed up" - less in response to Rich & more in response to the guy Rich is talking to passing out drunk (iirc)

This is just a 2R things but it hit me so just pointing out she just says “I’m not Juliet” in this one (rather than we’re not romeo and juliet) and auuauguughghg poor Christine :(

Weird noises: it’s kinda like a dinosaur impression in this one? They both go like RAAHH and make claw hands in the air. Then Jeremy stands up and pretends to be driving a car (I think???? lol) and Christine copies him

Christine starts standing up while Jeremy’s still asking her out. As soon as he finishes the question she immediately rejects him. That is to say, she saw where this was going and already knew her answer.

After the scene, Rich walks back across the room, flicking a lighter on and off in a daze. 

ALSO: Ensemble were very entertaining in the whole party! During this scene there were 3 of them playing spin the bottle downstage left and it had like a whole arc to it sdnjkfdfdsf Also guys passed out on the floor and on the couch 

Smartphone Hour

Starts w/ Jenna sitting on the edge of the stage, dangling her legs over the pit. 

Brooke is sadly eating Rich’s loaf of bread. (After she forgives Chloe she passes it to some other actor offstage which I probably wasn’t supposed to see but it was funny lol. communal machete bread)

THE PROJECTOR….. Everyone was holding phones and in the background was footage from their front-facing cameras (prerecorded, but it synced pretty well with the live actors). Then you could see the GUI of them typing some of the lyrics (“rich fled to bombay!!”) into imessage and twitter

AND THEN you see footage of the house burning down on an insta reel…. An unremarkable suburban house where you can see flames consuming the roof. This same footage plays on a few people’s reels, then there’s also footage of firemen coming and putting the fire out and its SO REALISTIC i was losing it 

Around “Changed my profile pic to you” it shows a bunch of (presumably) instagram photos of Rich like in his house and at school or wherever and i wont lie it made me feel for him a lot more. They were like actual full staged photos :( like thats a real guy in there… 

Pitiful children

Scene: When Jenna asks if the SQUIP is a drug, she does the same extended thing of checking to see that nobody’s watching that Jeremy did in The Squip Song

The Pants Song

Michael’s sitting on his front steps while smoking weed from a tiny green bong. You can tell it’s his front steps because there’s a mailbox next to him labeled MELL BOX in big letters dslkfjdskfjs

Michael’s wearing pants - I think that’s just textually accurate but reporting it anyway

When Mr. Heere comes over (“do you love him?”), he puts one leg on the top step and Michael is eye-level with his crotch. Michael has trouble tearing his eyes away. This happens a few times. In my opinion, it made him come off as a lot more high than he usually does lol

If I remember correctly, they get very intense and like shoulder-grabby at one point. Could’ve been a different scene though I dont remember OTL OTL

The Play

Michael comes out of the audience!!! It was cool it was meta lol

PINKBERRY CANON SDLKFJDKLFJKFJLSF. Brooke and Chloe have the Two Rivers dialogue (He didn’t sleep with you? He didn’t sleep with me!) then after Sisters forever! they do these actions to the rhythm of three staccato beats: “Jinx!” *high five(?)* *KISS ON THE LIPS* and instantly pull away. They're extremely normal about it and are just standing there afterwards without moving or acknowledging it. 

Despite being in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, Jeremy is dumbstruck and stares at them for a few beats before moving on to the next line. It was amazing. No notes. 

Jeremy is horrified when Christine starts singing to him. She walks robotically over to him and speaks kind of like she’s reading off a script (hehehe). Jeremy is backing up against a wall and freaking out almost like he’s trying to get away from her. No implication at all that he’s tempted. 

When everyone starts screaming in pain, Michael is screaming in triumph. (Or at least he looked very triumphant, I don’t remember if he screamed lol)

Voices in My Head

Rich is in a wheelchair. Also he doesn't have a lisp.

Rich is wearing Michael’s glasses. When he starts asking about Michael, Michael shows up and takes his glasses back. I think Rich steals them back at some point too? 

Michael acts a lil flirty with Rich - approximately "I'm sure you'll find something very special," then in a tiny high voice: “but not with meeeee…!” and he pushes Rich’s wheelchair so he rolls offstage jdsfkldsfkfd

At “Tell her that she excites you sexually” Rich does a little wheelie to (presumably) represent a pelvic thrust (all of these Rich moments were excellent I loved this Rich sm)

Christine’s squip was Taylor Swift this time!

At “I know the last thing I deserve is another shot, but…” He trails off and there’s a pause before “Just say what’s on your mind, Jeremy.” I know they get together obviously, but it felt like it could go either way! Maybe because it was live.

(And then they cccccome on lets go and do bows, in character i think, and it was amazing the end)

I was gonna write a TLDR here but honestly all of it was amazing and if you want the highlights it’s pretty much just the stuff I bolded!

Also end note the actors were all soooo nice and they let me ramble to them about jeremy for several minutes Q____Q it was amazing im so happy about this still I wish I got their signatures sjdlfkjdsfkdsf

I hope everyone gets to watch the show at some point but otherwise I hope this can be useful to someone!!

Story time! The gathering. pt.2

I was angry, tense, I had all sorts of problems and maybe I slammed the glass on the counter too angrily because it was quite loud, but I didn't know what to do, I was so freaked out. Plus, I already had so much alcohol in me that I reacted much more sensitively. It seems long written down, but it happened in a few seconds and took place inside me, but I was listening with a thousand ears to see how R would react to this question. I will try to recall verbatim what he said: "I think it's nothing, she's a very nice woman, but she didn't manage to steal my heart."

Girls, I'm so stupid. I should have been happy about that at that moment, but all I could think about was that R could be stolen from me at any time. What's more it turned out during their conversation that the woman is 37 years old, so older than R! lol OKAY

This is where Soah got herself into a very uncomfortable situation. Yes, that's me! KILL ME I couldn't keep my mouth shut and specifically said this: "Why don't you date someone younger?" Of course, when I realized what I had said, I regretted it.😭😭 R immediately turned back to me and laughingly asked: "What do you mean?" and that's when I started to save what I could... I started to say something like "I mean, I don't interfere, it's just that a 37-year-old woman wants to start a family too quickly because of the biological clock ticking, etc" (that's all I remember, which was a meaningful sentence) lol 💀 You should have seen my blushing akward face while R just listened curiously to my monologue. I will never accept vodka from anyone again!!!😖 BRUHH

BUT then I was very surprised because I couldn't even finish my nonsense. R took my hand and said "Come dance with me" but I immediately stopped and told him that I can't dance. ????? AAA "Just follow my steps" - he said and started dancing with me to some old retro music, but it didn't really go well for me, although he spun me around twice and then he even danced with my father. (this was funny) this man knows how to kill me.😭

I'm actually glad that R brushed off my awkward speech and surprised me by asking me to dance. At least that way I didn't put myself in an even more unpleasant situation. Then of course, we were not only busy with each other, I will only describe those parts to you. So he wasn't just with me all night, he also talked a lot with other people and so did I. But I was brave enough to hug him and maybe I hugged him longer than I should have, but he didn't mind me hanging on him. And what is worth mentioning is that while I was hugging him, after a while he said: "You drank too much huh?" - he said while pinching my face, then I told him not to pinch me all the time and he pinched my face again. Sir...sir..

The problem girls is that I fell too much in love with him and I think he can see that too..(?) (maybe idk??) maybe He sees but does not push the boundaries, but I noticed that if I step and I approach he does not reject it and allows it... so idk So much has happened, but now I'm really going to stop girls, because I'm writing too much. These were the important ones and the ones I remember more precisely.

There were still a few things that happened between us that were inexplicable, but maybe I will share them later...

(I would also like to say that now that I have written this down, I am a little relieved that he is not going on another date with that woman and that he rejected her.)

You and Satoru both dissolved into easy laughter amidst the distant chatter of their guests and the faint pink lights coming from the other side of the lake. He couldn't help the giddy feeling in his chest seeing you clutching onto the arm of his montsuki, eyes alight with mirth. The pair of you are far from the parameters of your agreement; just two friends, having fun under a fleeting canopy of rosy blooms...and maybe, just maybe, even beyond that.

Satoru glanced over his shoulder, wrenching his blue gaze from you. He took a moment to truly appreciate the view before him. He had gotten so used to it – seeing the sea of pink slowly taking over the cold white of winter. He had a private view of it, not having to go to parks like other people to witness it every year, but he never really felt anything profound about it until that moment. Sharing the view with you made all the difference.

"Do you like it?" he asked, voice quiet.

He heard your laughter, like chimes in the gently blowing wind. "That's an understatement."

Turning, he looked at you, beyond surprised to find you beaming at him. "Y-yeah?"

"Of epic proportions." 

Once again, he found himself admiring the view like it was the first time he was seeing it, but not the trees this time but you. He didn't know what possessed him at that time. It was spring then, too, and he knew he messed up when he asked if he could kiss you, and Suguru almost fell onto the sidewalk from laughing too much. But he had to save face and go along with it, and maybe that was a mistake considering how you've formed this impression of him that was far from how he wanted you to perceive him.

Funny how everything goes his way on anything except when it involves you.

Go slow, he thought. This was a step forward for him. At least you weren't just seeing him through a single lens seeing as how you reacted to his little surprise. He didn't really peg you for someone who appreciated the simpler things in life. If he knew you liked these things, then he would've done more of it to win you over.

He smiled to himself. And maybe it wasn't too late to actually start doing that if it meant he'd get to see you smiling happily because of him or something he did for you.

You sighed in contentment. "I love it. Thanks for having me over."

"You can come over anytime. Just say so."

You snickered. "Don't say that, or you'll be forced to take me here every weekend."

Satoru grinned back at you. "I don't see how that's to my disadvantage, sweet cheeks." He couldn't help being cheeky with you, but that seemed to have broken the spell of enjoying a great conversation with you. "I get to spend time with you."

"You're getting clingy, Gojo."

"Satoru," he whispered, his voice being carried away by the wind.

"Huh?"

"Earlier..." He looked at you, seeing the confusion on your face, and decided against it. "Nothing."

You smirked at him. "Yes, earlier, what was your mom saying? You mentioned me to her – how did she put it? – once or twice?"

Satoru rolled his eyes at you. "In passing, probably. She's making such a big deal out of it."

"Oh..."

"I...I didn't mean to make it sound like you're inconsequential, Y/N. All I'm saying is she likes to tease me a lot 'cause all I ever talk about are Suguru and Ieiri, and I guess I didn't realize that until she brought it up. I –"

"Satoru, you're rambling."

"Satoru?"

You paused. He didn't know what that meant, but he liked how you say his name outside of the times you were in bed. Just like you did earlier.

"You're too surprised when you asked me to call you by your name."

"So, you heard me?"

You nodded. "I guess it's better to address you that way if I am to come here every weekend." You chuckled. "I don't wanna be summoning the whole clan."

He felt his cheeks heating up, thankful for the dim lighting, and like the blood that rushed into his head, he couldn't stop the involuntary step he took towards you or the way his hands seemed to have developed minds of their own to cup your face. Not even the way he leaned forward and claimed your lips with his.

Satoru pushed you against the trunk of the cherry tree, planting one hand firmly against the rough bark just beside your head, pressing his warmth into yours.

It was just the two of you, or it felt like that to him, with no one else in your little bubble and nothing to worry about. He smiled against your mouth when he felt your fingers clutching at the fabric of his robe, taking it slow, taking all the time in the world with you.

Slow is good. He liked slow. It's worth it if it's you.

You both pulled away after a few moments, your lips raw and moist from the kisses you've shared, pupils blown out despite the lack of light. You just stared at each other before Satoru leaned his forehead against your shoulder.

"You know what?"

"What?" you asked.

He snickered. "I was supposedly conceived on this very spot." Again, he couldn't help it.

You rolled your eyes, already aware of what he's gonna say, but you bit the bait just that one time. "So?"

"Wanna make babies here with me?"

Hope you’re well and that I’m not bothering you, is it okay if I request a sort of headcanony thing about Zhao where his S/O is Majima’s (adoptive?) daughter? Like if Majima was kinda overprotective, how’d he react when he finds out? Idk if this is weird or not thank you <3

SKSKSK this is so funny to me??? I've never done anything like this before so hopefully it's up to snuff n all that. Headcanons below. Last one for today, big sick rn.

First of all, Zhao just didn't know. Had he known, he would've been like "Listen, I'm pretty sure I got into a fistfight with your dad". In his defense, she wouldn't be surprised hearing that. Majima kind of gets into fights with LOTS of people.

Zhao isn't exactly scared of Majima but once he finds out his girlfriend's dad is Majima, he's like "...Okay, what now?" I mean, of course he knows he'll meet the guy eventually but what the heck are they going to say to each other?

On the flip side, Majima always knew his daughter would at some point grow up and probably eventually find a partner and even get married one day. He doesn't have a fatherly instinct in the same way that Kiryu does with Haruka but he does have that same protectiveness.

Majima would never demand that his daughter do or not do something, but he's seen her get heartbroken a couple of times before and it was only at the behest of his daughter that those guys weren't walking around missing an eye themselves right now. Of course, his daughter hasn't told Zhao about that yet...

In the end, they decide to invite Majima over for dinner at Zhao's place. They figured since Zhao's such a great cook and Majima is easily pliable with food, it's the best scenario. Plus, it's a private setting so they don't have to worry about being in public with Majima because... well, he's HIM.

Majima jokingly complains the whole way there, saying things like "Whaddya mean this guy's gonna cook dinner? If he's tryna impress me, it ain't gonna work!" Secretly, he's thinking it must be pretty serious if he's about to meet his daughter's boyfriend at the guy's house. And he's going to cook food too? He must be serious about his daughter then too...

Zhao doesn't come out to greet them as he's busy holding a giant ass wok in the kitchen. From the smell, Majima seems temporarily pleased but he's a little snippy about the fact Zhao didn't even come out to say hi. His daughter also goes to the kitchen to help Zhao plate the food. Meanwhile, Majima sits down grumbling to himself about manners and how the dinner better be damn good.

Once Zhao finally steps out of the kitchen and the two make eye contact, Majima literally just lets out a loud "ACK" and recognizes him immediately. Zhao just kind of waves hello casually. Majima just kind of sits there shocked for a little bit while his daughter fills up a plate for him and Zhao pours them all some tea.

Majima finally snaps out of it and starts making all kinds of noise about how come no one told him when his daughter said she was dating a guy named Zhao that it just so happened to be the same Zhao that he got into a fight with before the Omi dissolved. His daughter hands him his plate and in his noisy panic, he quickly snatches the plate out of her hands and haphazardly shovels some food into his mouth, still talking and yammering away.

He instantly realizes it was a mistake to doubt Zhao's cooking because the food immediately makes him shut up. His frenzy is placated with each bite and eventually he just kind of looks at Zhao and nods. In hindsight, despite having gotten into a fight with Zhao at one point, the guy always seemed pretty chill. Plus, he did help with dissolving the Omi... also, his clothes are kind of cool?

All in all, the night ends up going pretty well. Majima enjoys the food but to his surprise, and kind of to his daughter's surprise too, he enjoys the conversations with Zhao more. Seeing how genuinely happy his daughter was all the proof he needed though: this guy might be the real deal. Provided he doesn't get into a fist fight with him ever again.

okay so! melissa with ptsd — this is a headcanon i’ve had since the pilot episode, but i’m only working on my own experiences/observations as a person with ptsd myself. i don’t know how much is lisa’s intentional acting choices, but she puts a LOT of thought into melissa (as seen in interviews) so i wouldn’t be surprised.

so my thinking is: melissa has (1) a sketchy relationship with the law, and (2) a sketchy relationship with her ex. both of these can result in dangerous experiences and post-traumatic stress. there are brief moments that suggest her relationship with her ex was tumultuous — it’s clearly left a mark on her and kept her from dating again. i remember a line about her staying at her sister’s after a fight? and she has a rough enough relationship with her sister that i doubt this was an easy decision. just little things that stuck out to me.

then there’s these psychosomatic details that catch my eye in lisa’s performance. off the top of my head:

the BIGGEST cue to me is melissa’s body language. she’s always taking a defensive posture — arms crossed over herself tightly — and usually seems to lean back into other people or the wall…

… as well as what barbara mentions: she always sits facing the door. that screams “hyper vigilance” to me, which is a symptom of ptsd.

her body language during the phone call with joe, her ex, is SUPER interesting to me. she curls in on herself in an uncharacteristic way — she softens her voice, even tears up. her tough guy persona is absent and she looks unusually small?

she seems to have a strong “fight” reflex and rises to conflict quickly, another aspect of hypervigilance. she often seems keyed up and sometimes expresses herself through aggression before using words (coming at sahar with the book, punching the samurai cutout). she jumps to assume the cameramen are cops, too. this reactivity is interesting to me because…

when she reaches emotional conflict, she’s actually prone to concede. she accepts apologies easily — from janine in the courtney episode, and in the cooking episode — from barbara in the “play in the mud” episode, too. for a seemingly aggressive person, she’s a bit of a pushover sometimes, almost like she loses her nerve to defend her boundaries. that can be a trauma response, especially after being gaslit.

small note, but the first time i noticed lisa’s body language was in the pilot, when ava rushes up behind her to greet gregory for the first time. melissa jolts back a bit and doesn’t seem to react or say anything — just silently looks away. weird for a “confrontational” south philly native with a bad attitude, right? also… keeping a bat under your desk at work. at an elementary school. that’s hypervigilance to a T 👀

god this season is doing such a good job with jake. after last episode it'd make so much sense for him to just be jealous and upset, but instead he's genuinely trying to communicate. and literally saying "you always wanted me to do this, so i'm trying, please talk to me" is like. really good.

idk for sure but it does feel like tom's lying about the boyfriend. at the very least, not giving any more information (valid choice if it's true given they're on tv and that ruined his life in s1) makes it seem like he's lying, which sucks for jake because at this point he is doing everything right.

not really surprised that aiden's mad at jake about it given he and tom are friends and he and jake don't know each other, but it is a little disappointing given how clearly (to the audience) jake is Trying His Best

also i do kind of love that this very much could have been the end of it if it weren't for ellie intentionally fucking it up.

villains alliance

i fully forgot that alec didn't know about the letters. of course he didn't, he would absolutely have taken it seriously because he's the only person in the alliance trying to make it work. i do think it's funny that he and riya had a conversation about it without even checking if anyone was listening tho.

gabby finding out was inevitable, ever since the "ellie would've told me line" but i do feel bad for her. i'm worried this is going to backfire on tess tho, since she offered to talk to ellie first. their relationship is really sweet and it makes sense for the game to mess it up, but yeah :(

magenta team

prediction from last time: "if it's magenta team it's probably fiore, which makes me think it won't be magenta team." well i was half right!

i love fiore so much and i'm sad to see her go, but honestly i really really love what they're doing with jake here.

like the theme of his character is Trust Issues, and in s1 that was a lot more lashing out at people over tiny slights which was not the most likable trait. but now he's learned that that's not healthy and is trying to correct it, but the core issue is still there. the fear and worry at being hurt or abandoned hasn't gone away, he's just not externalizing it as much.

like i genuinely don't think ashley is wrong for hanging out with ally, not eliminating ally, not picking up on the severity of jake's anxieties, etc. in fact i think kicking ally out would've made it worse, bc what he needs more than immediate reassurance that he's her ultimate bestie is to build up resistance to the fear of abandonment- being able to experience the worry and have it turn out okay without needing ashley to do something dramatic will help demonstrate that it doesn't have to be as big of a deal as his relationship trauma is telling him.

but also i get it. and i'm not worried about ashley turning on him, but i do think he's not going to handle it well bc he needs to be liked so bad and is not having a good time.

other thoughts

yellow team took more of a backseat this episode (besides the villains alliance thing, but that was a bit more ellie focused), but yul continues to be the world's shittiest boyfriend. grett has grown so so much since s1 and it's gonna hurt so bad when this gets exposed i know it :(

cyan team should be high focus next episode, mainly bc of the villains thing. i think it's likely ellie will react badly to being confronted about it, and i can see it causing team tension esp with gabby. if they end up having elimination i don't really see ellie surviving at this point? mostly because tom and aiden are already biased against her and while i can see gabby sticking with her i don't think she could convince tess.

i don't think magenta will be up for elimination again, mainly because i think their current drama needs some time to marinate. ashley won't turn on jake unless he gives her a Really Good reason, and i don't see that happening in a single episode. and if they take ally out that kills the tension of jake not knowing how it'll go. so that (along with them having the smallest team) has me leaning against them.

if it's yellow, it's probably yul. riya and alec have not been subtle about their dislike, and there's no longer a non-villain option. i guess if grett hasn't figured out his act by then it could be a tie (in which case i think yulgrett would vote for riya, and yul would win the tiebreaker for narrative purposes (it not making sense for him to go home before being exposed to grett)), but it could go differently. i think it's more likely to be cyan tho.

i should note i have no idea when to expect the merge. it feels too soon right now though.

also! i don't really think tess is in danger (although as team mediator and the tiebreaker between gabellie and tomaiden, she is the obvious candidate for getting out via trickery), but i do think she might be out soon- mainly, i'm expecting ally to be the one from her trio that lasts the longest, and i'm really interested to see how she reacts to tess elimination vs hunter. i also think it'd be interesting if tess gets out before they get much of a chance to catch up, and how that would affect things. anyways not likely to be next episode but i can maybe see that coming up at some point.

also also! i will very much enjoy seeing alec's response to fiore's elimination :3c (not that there will be one, of course, because he does not care :3c)

okay i'm probably getting ahead of myself but i'm SO excited for the clock keepers' trial bc i'm constantly puzzling over all the time fuckery in tbhk and specifically wondering about how all of the time travel seems to center around nene. and i've been wondering, is this just bc she's the heroine so we see most of the story through her eyes? I feel like that's possible, but we get a lot of perspectives that aren't hers and scenes where she's not there as well!! so i think maybe it is specific to nene! and if so, she might be in some hot water with this trial, on account of her extensive list of:

time crimes!

(even if she didn't really have any control over them lol, they still all revolve around her! and i don't know how understanding the clock keepers are about that sort of thing...)

so before the trail, let's revisit nene's time crimes! (and let me know if i missed any!)

time crime 1: meeting amane as a student after escaping the place between worlds. this is the first one, but perhaps also the one that could get her in the most trouble, as she straight up stole a key from the past and brought it to the present! who knows what butterfly effect that may have had!

time crime 2: transporting to the 1964 star festival and chatting with a little amane! unintentional as always, but she left an impression, and figured out how to get herself back to her own time. impressive time skills with worrying implications about the repercussions!

time crime 3: intentionally trying to change the timeline after meeting a 4-year-old tsukasa in the red house!

though, idk if this fits in with the theory, bc if nene gets in trouble with the timekeepers for this then kou should also be here in court right? but maybe they just couldn't find him lol. for his sake i hope that's the case...

...bc if this actually affected the timeline it was probably the biggest time wreckage of the series yet, so. prayer circle for kou if this gets brought up in court lmao

time crime 4: running into middle school tsukasa amidst some school festival time fuckery. really interesting that tsukasa doesn't seem surprised... like he knew he would find nene there... even more questions but that spiral is maybe for another time lol. once again it's not intentional on her part, but very much happens to (because of?) her specifically

bonus: not necessarily a time crime, but maybe one? at least something that furthers the connection between nene and time working strangely around her: mitsuba's picture of the red house doesn't develop until it's in her hands specifically. sure, this could be red house magic. but why wouldn't it have developed for mitsuba? it sorta seems to me like nene could be the thing that developed this picture from the past, but it's a less solid theory, as we haven't really seen anything else like this that we can compare it to (unless i'm forgetting something! please let me know if i am!)

i'm super excited for the trial bc i have a lot of questions about why time moves so strangely around nene, and maybe we'll get answers about that in the trial!

the other most exciting part, for me, about these things potentially being brought up in the trial, is that nene hasn't told hanako about talking with past versions of tsukasa. and as someone who eats up angst like it's candy, i cannot express how much i would love to see hanako finding out from a third party (the clock keepers) that tsukasa and nene, the two most significant people in his life, who he usually tries to keep separate, have been traipsing through time together and never got around to telling him about it. how would hanako, who almost never willingly gives up information about himself, react to finding out that nene got information about him from tsukasa in secret?

and right after she just told him she loves him ): how sad would that be? <3

I think that Viewpoint B and 45510 say something about Ai herself, both stories dive deep into her character. can you elaborate on it

The side stories are really interesting to me because like — IDK how intentional this was on Akasaka's part but they feel like a really deliberate study in contrast. They both have the same basic setup of a B-Komachi member looking back on her time on the group and her relationship with Ai from the perspective of them as grown adults over a decade out from Ai's death. The most immediate contrast is tonewise— Viewpoint B is a quietly sad and melancholic piece sort of tinged with nostalgia, especially with how Rie Takahashi chooses to perform Kyun in the audio drama adaptation of it. By contrast, 45510 is sooooo angry and bitter and Nino is so hostile and angry even years later when she really should have started moving on with her life. Not that there's a timeframe or schedule for grief, obviously, but to be this actively resentful and contemptuous of a person who has been dead for fifteen years... bitch will you PLEASE get your gay ass to therapy already!!!

When it comes to Ai, though, what strikes me is the consistency. Just like how both stories are about B-Komachi members reminiscing, Ai spends both stories reaching out and trying to connect with them and we get a whole lot of juicy thematic stuff as a result.

In 45510, Nino isn't connecting with the 'real' Ai— her equivalent of Ai & Kyun's talk is her passively taking in one of Ai's old videos, feeding on the "Ai of B-Komachi" she's still obsessed with. Even in this one-sided, sanitized form though we see over and over during the stream that Ai is doing everything she can to try and connect; she gives stumblingly earnest answers to the questions she picks out from the chat and even outright says that even though it scares her, she wants people to understand her and see even the parts of herself she hates. The purity of this wish is so strong that even Nino, who hates Ai so much that she accuses her of lying about things that Nino knows for a fact are fucking true begrudgingly admits those are Ai's true feelings and that she had finally listened to them for the first time in her life.

That's why the ending is such a gut punch. This tentative peek into the cracks in Ai's armor is enough for Nino to go looking for more of her only to react with such shock and disgust when she is faced with this full image of the real Ai reaching out to her via the blog that all she can think to do is irrevocably destroy it. It's just as Nino herself says— she's a woman more devoted to "the idol, Ai" than anyone else. That's why she can't allow Hoshino Ai to exist.

Viewpoint B contrasts this at almost every step of the way. Not only is Kyun's moment of connection a two-way street but it's with Ai herself, in person. Once again, we see Ai going out of her way to reach out and try to connect and for a brief, shining moment, someone actually reaches back. It's just for one evening but she and Kyun actually connect on a real human level; Kyun not only gets a peek at the real Ai's pain and human vulnerabilities but she accepts her, sympathizes with her and even seems to like her, poking at and teasing her to get more of those honest reactions out of Ai.

I literally just realized now as I was typing, but Kyun coming across Ai's "Lying Me" lyrics is a direct parallel to Nino finding Ai's blog draft. Both of them stumble across Ai pouring out her vulnerability into words but while Nino has to destroy it... Kyun accepts and uplifts it. In a lot of ways, Kyun is one of the people Ai has been looking for her whole life: a person who sees the real her and accepts it, regardless of how ugly and tarnished it is. It doesn't surprise me at all, then, that Ai went on to consider Kyun her closest and dearest friend in B-Komachi even years after that one fleeting conversation.

Both sidestories highlight something really important about Ai that I think is kind of slept on by a lot of surface level reads of her— I see a lot of people (as I've previously discussed) centering lies and lying when discussing her to such an extent that they treat it as though deception is in of itself her end goal while completely failing to think about what her motivations actually are.

What both 45510 and Viewpoint B really emphasize is that lying is, for Ai, just a means to an end, a survival tactic that was forced onto her that she doesn't know how to unlearn. Ai lies because she has lead a life that has caused her to believe she has to, because the 'real her' is so ugly and unacceptable that her only choice is to cover it up with pretty lies.

The real driving core of Ai's character is loneliness, desperation and hope. Over and over and over we see Ai trying to reach out to people, desperately trying to connect to them even in the face of repeated and absolute rejection. In 45510, she is heavily implied to have written the truth about Aqua and Ruby in the blog post that Nino deletes, all but putting her still-beating heart into the hands of girls she knows hate her but still choosing to take the chance on trusting them if her exposing her vulnerability will convince them of her sincerity.

Ai never loses hope. No matter how cruel the world is to her or how cruel each individual person is to her, Ai does everything she can to love and accept them, to make them feel supported, recognized and cared for even if it's only for a moment. In its own way, isn't that "love"?

Do you think Strabo ever had the suspicion that Coriolanus played a role in Sejanus's death? I read your character studies on the Plinth family (love those works so much) and wondered if Strabo would ever have the feeling that Coriolanus betrayed Sejanus because Strabo knows that Coriolanus is just like him. If Strabo sees similarities between himself and Coriolanus, I'm assuming he can sense that Coriolanus is power hungry and willing to betray anyone to get to the top. On another note, how do you think Strabo mourned/reacted after Sejanus's death? We see that Ma curses the mountains for the rest of her life, but Strabo was never really religious.

I DEFINITELY think strabo suspected something, but not right away. he was an asshole, but as I always say, I do think he loved his son and his family in his own twisted way. at first, I think he went through the logic he himself says in the book: the plinths were parents without a son, coriolanus was a boy without his parents. and coriolanus was intelligent, and ambitious, and young and full of potential.

but that's the thing: full of potential. coriolanus was 19 at that time, and I think strabo underestimated him for a while. he would never think such a young boy would do the kind of things he did, let alone to sejanus, someone so loyal to coriolanus.

however, as time passed by, and strabo started to notice more and more how coriolanus seemed even more ruthless than himself, even more power hungry... it all started to come into place.

strabo betrayed his own district, his own home.

why wouldn't coriolanus betray a friend?

now, let's talk about strabo and the plinths in general: one thing that makes me think a lot is that after the events of tbosas, we don't hear about the plinths never again in thg. never. coriolanus became their heir, and I'm assuming they became some sort of parent like figures to him. maybe I'm reaching, but in these conditions, I would expect for coriolanus to mention them at least once. but nothing. nothing at all.

so. what happened?

there's a saying where I'm from (I at least never heard it in english) that goes like "it's snake eating snake". it basically means that when two horrible people get close to each other, it's not really a surprise when they start betraying each other. and that's basically coriolanus and strabo to me after years after sejanus' death, after the first moment of pain went away and the logic started to come back into place.

my personal theory is: strabo at some point knew. he was a smart man and too much alike coriolanus. and we all know how things end for people who cross coriolanus' path.

about how strabo reacted: I think he was devasted, really. and in the same way coriolanus has this feeling all over the book that he's annoyed and tired of having to get sejanus out of trouble, strabo have done this all his life, and it wasn't enough. strabo hated to fail, and regarding sejanus, I think he felt like he failed. and plus, he not only lost his son, he lost his heir. I think he drowned himself in work and I do think he had something to do with why the hell D2 went from their mentality in the 10th games to their mentality in the 74th games. maybe he helped coriolanus with propaganda, or gave him ideas, idk, but it was important to him to make sure that no other boy from that district would end up in the dangerou rebel path sejanus ended.

(of course coriolanus supported his ideas. strabo just didn't know at the time that the reasons were completely different from his.)

It all started with a teacher-assigned lab project. Eric had gotten paired with a guy he never really talked to before. At first, he wished that he was paired with Hyde or even Kelso. But then his partner decided to introduce himself.

Y/n L/n was actually a cool guy. He was funny, smart, and rich. Not that that really mattered to Eric. It just surprised him because the rich people he knew (Jackie, the only rich person he knew) were usually stuck up, and Y/n wasn’t like that at all.

The two were walking to the parking lot, talking about the possibilities of their lab project, when Y/n unlocked his car. It was a really nice car.

“This is yours?” Eric asked incredulously. Y/n nodded, throwing his backpack in the back seat. “Oh, so you’re the guy I hate.” Y/n laughed.

“Do you, uh, wanna go for a ride?”

“Really?” He nodded again. “Hell, yes.” Eric ran around the car and got into the passenger’s seat. Y/n laughed at his antics before sitting in the driver’s seat. When he turned the car on, Eric started playing with the window, constantly rolling it up and down. Y/n grinned as he watched; Eric looked like an excited child.

That was a week ago. The two had hung out every day. It was mainly for the lab project, but they finished it quickly and were now just hanging out for fun. They’d eat at the Hub, play arcade games, or hang out at one of their houses. Tonight, they decided to go see a movie.

“That was a good movie, wasn’t it?” Y/n asked as he and Eric left the theater, heading back to his car.

“Yeah, I mean, who thought working at a car wash would be so much fun?” They both got in the car, settling in.

“What do you wanna do now?” Y/n asked. Eric thought for a minute before hissing.

“Oh, crap.”

“What?”

“It’s nothing. I, uh, I forgot to call Donna.”

“Oh.” Y/n looked out the window, somewhat bitter at the mention of the girl Eric seemed very hung up on. “So, is she, like, your girlfriend?” Eric sighed.

“I don’t know. It’s…” He sighed again. “I don’t know.”

“Hey, it’s okay to be confused, Eric.” Y/n reassured him.

“Yeah. You know, sometimes, I feel like, I don’t know. I feel like we’re in a movie, right? And I’m nervous around her, and I feel like I’m playing this part. But it’s not me-” As Eric talked, Y/n nodded along, leaning closer to his friend until he cut him off with a kiss. Eric didn’t react for a second, but when he did, Y/n pushed himself away from Eric. He started shouting “woah” over and over, his breath quickening.

“What?” Y/n asked, trying to swallow the lump in his throat. Clearly, he had made some kind of mistake. All he could do now was play it cool.

“You, you, you’re gay!”

Y/n laughed, albeit a bit nervously.

“No, I’m not.”

“But you just kissed me.” There was a pause. 

“Okay, I’m gay.” Y/n smiled, trying to ease the tension. By now, Eric’s breathing had evened, and he relaxed slightly.

“I think I’m ready to go home.”

Eric couldn’t stop thinking about Y/n and that kiss. It freaked him out; of course, it did. He wasn’t expecting his new best friend to kiss him. But when he thought about when it happened, he realized that there was this moment. Y/n had kissed him, and before he started thrashing around and freaking out, he was relaxed. That confused him. If Eric didn’t like Y/n like that, why would he be relaxed when Y/n was kissing him?

Eric decided to go down to the basement. The rest of the guys were there. One thing led to another, and they all sat in the circle.

“Where’s that Y/n guy, Forman?” Hyde asked as he breathed in the smoke before passing it to Fez.

“Yeah, I thought you two were best friends now.” Kelso teased.

“Oh, he, uh, he had stuff to do,” Eric muttered, staring at the table. He thought smoking would get Y/n off his mind, but he just couldn’t stop thinking about him.

It was normal to constantly think about a guy that kissed you when you were straight, right?

“What a shame. I know how much you liked riding in his car.” Hyde said.

“It wasn’t just about the car, Hyde. He’s a cool guy.”

“Hey, speaking of cars. There’s this car, and it-”

“Can I ask you guys something?” Eric cut Hyde off from his spiel that happened every time they had a circle session.

“Sure.”

“Shoot.”

“Fine.”

Eric had to word this carefully, which was hard because he was kind of out of his mind right now. He didn’t want his friends to know who exactly he was thinking so hard about.

“Okay, let’s say that you like someone.”

“Gross.”

“Shut up, Hyde! Anyways, you think that you have this bond with this person, like you’re gonna spend the rest of your life with them. But then another person comes along, and you don’t know what to do because you think you’re supposed to be with this one person, but you can’t stop thinking about the other.” Eric’s friends were silent as they tried to process Eric’s ramble.

“Forman, man, are you thinking of juggling Donna and another chick?” Hyde asked. Eric groaned, but Kelso cheered.

“Eric, you totally should.”

“That’s not what I’m saying, guys.”

“Eric,” Fez said, grabbing his attention while Hyde and Kelso started arguing over whether or not Eric should date two girls. “Do you like this new girl?”

Eric wanted to tell Fez that he wasn’t talking about a girl at all. But he didn’t want his friends to freak out over him losing his mind over a guy. So he just nodded.

“Yeah, I think so.”

“Do you like her more than Donna?”

That made Eric really start to think, which was difficult because the wall behind Fez wouldn’t stop moving. He had known Donna for years and Y/n for a little over a week. There was no way he could possibly like Y/n more than Donna.

But then again, Eric had bonded more with Y/n in that one week than he had with Donna in their decade of friendship.

Eric suddenly stumbled out of his chair, running to the door.

“Forman, where are you going?” Hyde yelled after him.

“I gotta go talk to him!” Then he slammed the door behind him and ran up the stairs. Hyde, Kelso, and Fez all looked at each other.

“Did he just say ‘him?’”

Y/n was moping around his house. He felt so stupid. Why did he kiss Eric? He finally had a good friendship with a guy and then ruined it by kissing him. Thank God it was the weekend because Y/n couldn’t face Eric right now.

“Calm down! I’m coming!” Y/n yelled as he raced down the stairs and to his front entrance, where some crazy person was banging on the door. He looked through the window beside the door and froze.

It was Eric, who was still begging for the door to open.

“Eric, uh…” Y/n took a deep breath, looking down at his shoes so he couldn’t look at the boy in front of him. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to talk to you.”

No shit.

“Uh, about what?” Y/n was so nervous, but he couldn’t show it.

“You kissed me yesterday.” Eric was probably even more nervous than Y/n, but Y/n couldn’t see that because he kept looking at the ground.

“Yeah, I’m sorry about that.”

“I’m not gay.”

This felt like such a punch to the gut.

“Yeah, I know that now. I thought you were throwing me signals because of the whole ‘I have a part to play, but it’s not me’ thing.”

“But I think I like you.”

“What?” Y/n almost choked on his own spit. It felt like he got whiplash. “What do you mean?” Eric took a shaky breath.

“Basically, my whole life, I thought I was gonna end up with Donna.” Why did he have to bring up Donna? “But then you came along, and at first, I thought I just had a new friend. But then you kissed me. And I’ve always been pretty sure I don’t like dudes, but for some crazy reason, I like you.”

“So?”

“So…” Eric thought that by now, he would have come to some conclusion that would solve everything. But he didn’t. “I don’t know. I still wanna hang out with you, though.”

“Really?” All the dread left Y/n’s body. 

“Yeah!” Eric gained a newfound confidence. “And if you wanna kiss and stuff when we hang out, I think I’m cool with that.”

“Could I, uh, maybe kiss you right now?” Eric took a deep breath.

“Yeah.” Y/n grinned, stepping closer to him. “Just to let you know, I don’t have much experience with kissing guys.” Y/n laughed, gripping Eric’s jacket.

“Don’t worry, it’s like kissing a girl, but I’m a dude.”

“Oh, perfect.” Eric put his hands on the sides of Y/n’s face and leaned in. This time, he didn’t freak out about kissing him. He felt calm. Somehow, he felt better than when he ever kissed Donna.

“Do you wanna come inside?” Y/n asked. Eric nodded and was led into Y/n’s house.
