You know, sometimes I think about the fact that the first memorial that Owen puts up in the 126 has a literal gap where Judd's picture would have gone if he had died. That's his entire firehouse up there, his family, and he's missing. When we meet him, he doesn't feel like he's a part of the new 126 because he's supposed to be up there. That's his team, and he's so racked by this survivors guilt that it's ruining him.

And it's not until the (new) 126 has been completely torn down and broken apart that the memorial is replaced, and there's no longer a gap for Judd. I always feel like the show glosses over the trauma and survivors guilt that Judd has from this, but I genuinely think that it's only after the (new) 126 was separated and almost destoryed that Judd finally - and fully - realised that this was his team and that was okay. He's finally accepted that he can move on and be fully a part of this team and not feel guilt about it. I know Judd has always cared about the (new) 126, but I think a part of him was still feeling guilty about that, and this is just a physical display that he's finally been able to move on properly, maybe not fully, but properly.

im researching Scarecrow hench-people and the DC wiki is really unhelpful, can you give me a list of a few notable ones. Also who's this Autumn from the Audio Adventures people keep mentioning. Is she a canon character or is she an OC

Thank you! Now that you mention it, it does seem like Scarecrow's kinda lacking in terms of notable henchmen, even purely in terms of visually distinct one-offs. It might have something to do with how little he's been traditionally focused on crime and coalition building, per se, and more so on lone terrorist campaigns and experimentation. Besides Scream Queen, who I already went into in the other post, these are the ones that I can think of:

Autumn / Miss Autumn is canon to TBAA, she just never showed up in the show. We hear about her in S1 via two scenes where Miss Tuesday talks about her friend in Scarecrow's gang, another villain assistant named Autumn that she always texts with and coordinates with, and then later she'd appear in issue #6 of the Audio Adventures comic, kidnapping Dick while he's disguised as a Burma Shave Boy and bringing him over to the Scarecrow as part of his plan. She claims to be a scullery maid in charge of the "kitchen" and is instructed by Crane to prepare a new batch, and Dick finds an Arkham Asylum physician's clearence and security badge that might belong to her, given Miss Tuesday in the show claims to have grown up in Arkham and the two seeming to be fairly close friends.

The Audio Adventures Special prequel comic released along with S2 also showed that, along with his biker gang to peddle in the street, he employs dealers hidden in plain sight such as the elderly librarian Mrs.Elliot, who we don't get to know much more about other than her being known by Dick and his friends, and a willing enthusiastic participant in the Scarecrow's plans to sell drugs to kids, as well as kidnap and experiment on them.

In terms of notable henchmen I think the first one he ever got were the Strawmen from Batman #296: said to be named Otto and Raymond, former students of his who've joined him and became students of the Scarecrow, serving as the muscle to his operation.

There's Linda Frittawa / Fright, introduced in a Judd Winick arc by the name of "As the Crow Flies", who became his assistant and confidant, while secretly manipulating him under a deal she made with the Penguin. She's the one who turned Scarecrow into the Scarebeast, and eventually showed up later working for Jeremiah Arkham Black Mask.

Not quite a henchwoman per se but there is a character named Haunter who showed up in the 2017 Batman (vol.3) annual, who's able to kill people with her DNA and who coordinates a small-scale fear gas with Jonathan to make her escape from Arkham, and it's said the two had a "twisted mutual admiration thing" before Batman put her away. She's only made two appearences in total, in two anthology shorts penned by her creator Scott Bryan Wilson, and I'm including her because given her name and gimmick and lack of prominence, she might as well be a Scarecrow henchwoman or partner or extension of his deal.

There's a fairly long pattern of Scarecrow being responsible for the creation of new villains with his experiments even if they don't necessarily go on to become henchmen - Madame Crow from Tynion's run was a former student who was tortured with fear toxin for months and took over a year to recover, before embarking on her own fear toxin campaigns. Colin Wilkes from Streets of Gotham was an abused orphan kidnapped by Scarecrow and given Venom injections before being ordered to attack Batman, and who was freed and became a hero. The Gotham Knight movie states that this version of Killer Croc was experimented on by Jonathan Crane, who caused his condition to worsen and seems to have kept him around a sewer hideout as an attack dog. The Titans show had him behind the resurrection of Jason Todd and his transformation into Red Hood, and Gotham had him create the show's version of Joker Toxin that kicks off Jeremiah Valeska's transformation.

And finally, we'd be remiss not to mention that a couple of times in his older appearences he's had a pet raven named Nightmare, a concept that's come up again in more recent kid-friendly books where it's named Croward instead, who assisted him in his criminal endeavors. I suppose that raven evidently doesn't make too much sense given Crane's backstory revolving around the crow trauma inflicted on him by his grandmother, or that trained birds are still very much Penguin territory in spite of him never using them anymore, or it clashing too much with the darker tone and vibe he's supposed to have, but there's a self-evident charm to the scarecrow-themed villain having a pet raven circling him.

I've really come to enjoy your blog as someone who is kind of new to navigating the world of comics and how to read them and you seem to be one of the people that's more vocal about all the fanon and canon differences and how that damages people's perception of characters. I'm just a bit confused in what you consider to be the difference of headcanons and fanon, I know fanon is a more of something that a big number of people believe, but if someone headcanons something that isn't covered in canon, would that be "bad" or fall on the fandom category?

wrt fanon vs canon my issue is this — parts of comic fandom are very vocal about not engaging with the source material. deciding what fanon is “good” vs “bad” isn’t the point because im not interested in policing peoples fandom experience. however there is a point where i don’t understand what exactly some people are fans of, because what they talk about is so disconnected from the original text.

imagine meeting a hunger games fan, and when u ask about their favourite movie or book, they instead tell u that they’ve never read or seen any part of the series, exclusively read fanfiction, and then inform u that they believe president snow is peeta’s grandfather and that actually haymitch was the authoritarian mastermind behind the hunger games. that doesn’t make any sense, and has no basis in canon. it’s a very extreme hypothetical, but i wouldn’t really take what they say about the hunger games seriously. it also reminds me a bit of the hp marauders fanworks that exist almost autonomously to the books (while still containing the same issues as said books).

most fanon enjoyers (and this is particularly pervasive with batfam fans) enjoy characters and relationships that simply do not exist. that alone isn’t a problem (crackships and headcanons have existed since ye olde star trek zine days) but the issue is that these fanon interpretations are loudly asserted as being the correct way to engage with the characters. i do not believe it should be controversial to prefer characters in their canonical text, or to ask why some fanon content is taken as gospel, especially when so much of it is racialised.

this lends into a wider trend where these headcanons are respected more than canon despite often being actively reductive, accidentally demeaning, or just plain bad faith interpretations. it’s much harder to combat the racism present in conversations about damian wayne when the people in question aren’t grant morrison or judd winick or scott snyder, but instead a nebulous group of people on twitter.

flatly, i encourage people to read the source material. there are a lot of comics, but googling ‘[literally any character] reading list’ has literally never been easier. start by consuming the movies or cartoons or films or shows or the one volume graphic novels, then pinpoint what u like and start from there. people are discouraged from reading comics — and they shouldn’t be!! especially for popular characters there are very accessible starting points!! u will find characters to love with rich history and lore!!!! support queer artists and artists of colour who are actively changing the industry!!! i guarantee that the fanon version of that male character u love is actually originally from a female character with a great miniseries written by greg rucka!!!!

can we talk about judd? i just wanna talk about judd. visiting the birch house for your boyfriend and/or friend?? yes.

he does scare you but it's not intentional. you'd show up to the birch household because leah invited you or you are miraculously friends with him and after all of the pleasantries you hear his voice echoing from somewhere

on occasion you can pinpoint where his voice is coming from and you just either look up at a vent or knock on that specific wall

riding in his van? you'd think it's a death wish but he actually makes you put on your seatbelt before he takes off. probably even puts his arm out infront of you when he makes a hard stop

with that said there's so much more to him than just a man that wants to watch the world burn, not like he doesn't want that but there's more.

omg so this was a wild book !! it was so entertaining, and i think that i enjoyed the writing in this book more than the writing in the naturals.

overall i rated it 3.75 stars just because some of the characters were just a wee bit annoying.

all of the dean and michael stuff was kind of annoying because i kind of always assumed that cassie would end up with dean anyway

like the entire time cassie is seeking out dean, an dean reciprocates in his own ways, he was really going through a lot in this book so you could tell it was hard for him to let anyone else in to his life

michael on the other hand, was the one seeking cassie out, mostly to vex dean

or at least thats the impression that i got from michael

i think that michael is a pretty fun character, but i dont think that he was ever going to end up with cassie

i really enjoyed meeting sterling, her character is so cool, i liked seeing her development throughout the book

What theory would you like the story of Splatoon 4 be about?

- Judd & Li'l judd past

-Something related to the Great Zapfish (Not just as a battery for the evil guy but as the main lore/evil guy)

-Something salmonid related

-More things related to the humans

-Something related to the Great Turf war

-Something else related to the past (Maybe time travel?)

From the selection you showed me, I have a suspicion that it may focus on the Salmonids. They are one of the only species in the series that still needs some more exploration into their lives. Sure we know lots about them but I wanna know more damn it!!!! The only way I see the Salmonids not getting a focus is if they wanna continue expanding Salmon Run and make it the equivalent of COD Zombies for Splatoon. (I kinda hope we don't get Salmon Run in the next game but a brand new mode tbh.)

Also another thing about Splatoon 4, you see these guys right here?

Yeah, I don't think they'll be coming back. As in they won't show up in the same roles that they used to have. The New Squidbeak Splatoon's story has ended, it's done, it's time for them to go on new arcs and adventures and I dont think they'll be the driving force of the next Hero Mode. Maybe a DLC or something but who knows what the future holds.

Also I'm gonna be for real, if the next plot is about time travel or we go back in time to the Great Turf War, im not gonna be happy about that. The Splatoon trilogy has always been about the Inklings vs. the Octarians and them finally coming together to solve their differences. So reversing everything just to see boring basic bitch yaoi in action is just kinda backwards of what Splatoon was trying to tell. Do we NEED to go back in time? Do we NEED yet another repeat of Inklings vs. Octarians? I would be down for a spin off game that isn't connected to anything and is just a single player Great Turf War game. But not the main mode of the next gen Splatoon game man.

No matter what Splatoon 4's story mode ends up being, i just want something actually fucking good for once. You know how many people criticise ROTM and Splatoon 2's mid as fuck story? (Me, that's me.) They need to seriously change up how they go about telling stories in this franchise because at this rate I'm getting tired of stories that feel half baked, mismanaged, insulting to their own characters (you can figure out on who I'm talking about here) and I could go on. Like, the stories aren't BADDDD aside from one, but i know they can do so much better. I will hope for the best just to preserve my sanity.
