Weell it was already (vaguely) mentioned here and there but basically, Nyx has a objectification kink of sorts (not necessarily sexual but u know)

They were created in mind to be a killing machine, a tool and treated as an 'it', barely considering them a conscious living being, and that was deeply integrated in his mindset, in a literal sense.

And, while Nyx doesn't want to be associated with his creators in any way, not belonging to anyone DID take a blow on him, even if his pride won't let him openly admit it. After all, what worth has a tool if no one uses it?

That's why when he settled his (many) eyes on you and saw how you were as a person, he decided to be oh so merciful and give you the 'privilege' of owning him. In a way, you could say it's his way of coping a bit with his momentary identity crisis, but it also makes him feel safer and purposeful. Isn't it simpler to just forget everything else and call himself your tool and you his owner? After all, you have such a perfect, versatile and very willing tool in your hands, why would you need anything, or anyone else, for that matter? Lol

Franco is much taller in-game than he is in the comic. In fact, he's the same height as every other ex-pop or prime asset, since only the giant ex-pops get any special treatment.

Honestly, it really bugs me that his height is supposed to be a defining trait, but in-game, it just doesn’t matter. I get that it would’ve required entirely new motion captures, but still, wouldn’t it add so much to his character if he visibly struggled with things like reaching into barrels or dragging out reagents? I think he would’ve been worth the extra effort, but whatever, I guess that just means they never planned to include any other short characters.

With Coyle and Gooseberry, we never see them close enough to others to make solid height comparisons. But with Franco, there’s plenty of evidence that he’s short. For example, from what we see of Clyde Perry in the comic, he’s not a tall guy, and Franco is clearly shorter than him.

Even with the odd angles and keeping perspective in mind, Franco is a lil guy.

I think he is, or at least was supposed to exhibit some level of medical dwarfism, but either there was a change of heart or technical limitations stopped Red Barrels from running with it... or, as I said, we're just supposed to suspend our disbelief. His facial features resemble those of someone with Pfeiffer Syndrome (type one), so maybe it was a fear of demonising or infantilising people with disabilities that kept them from implementing his proper height. But that seems like an odd line to draw, considering the stuff they pull in the rest of The Trials.

I think Franco's outfit adds to his bulky appearance in-game, and I reckon he was given that suit at Sinyala. Because the fact is, on the outside, the Barbis were rich enough to afford proper clothes tailoring, which would have made Franco look far more proportional. I think they deliberately put him in an oversized suit to make him seem more childish, despite how big they made him in-game.

It's good character design, and it works regardless of how big or small a character is. Putting someone in oversized clothing is usually a reliable way to make them seem more childlike. It's why, at nearly 30, I can still get a child ticket for the bus, because I am height-deficient and I live in oversized hoodies.

Furthermore, everyone in the game describes him as short. I'm not combing through every single line of dialogue, since it's all very well documented on the wiki, but both Coyle and Gooseberry reference Franco’s short stature constantly in their Prime Time dialogue.

Mother Gooseberry calls Franco "little man" in the majority of her lines, as well as "dapper little fellow," which I thought was incredibly cute.

Coyle, on the other hand, is much less flattering but definitely more descriptive. He calls Franco things like "runt of the litter," "half-sized pile of shit," "s'like somebody cut a man in half," and so on.

Unrelated, but since this is a Coyle blog, I think I'll add this at the tail end. For as much as people depict Coyle as tall, I really don't think he would be. Partially because nobody comments on it in any way. If we were supposed to read Coyle as tall, I think Gooseberry would probably have called him "tall, dark, and handsome," or something similar. If he were 6'0 or over, he would be considered tall.

5'8 was the average height for a man during the 1950s, and we should remember that this guy grew up during the Great Depression, which ended when he was roughly 16, so it's quite possible he didn't reach his full adolescent potential due to malnourishment. Frankly, I think the only reason he manages to lift that prisoner with one hand the way he does is because he's off his tits on whatever drugs Murkoff gives them. He certainly doesn't look strong enough to do it without a little enhancement.

But that's just my hypothesis, people can obviously enjoy him and depict him however they like, I'm not the fun police. I just like to gather evidence and show it to everyone like some sort of academic magpie. This is all in good fun

While I personally don't quite have a "definite yes" or "definite no" answer for this I personally think that, yeah, possibly! I think it's a question with a lot of layers to it, "is it something the character would want?" "Is it something the character should do?" "How much thought would the character put into it all beforehand?" "How long would the character wait before making that choice?" And first of all I think I should talk about fandom culture's view on kids in general. Why? Because I'm obsessed with validating my opinions like this

It's been said many times by many people now how there are a lot of times where fans end up writing completely out of character for the purpose of placing characters into positions of stereotypical familial structures- ESPECIALLY forcing women into the roles of motherhood where it doesnt fit or make sense for them to the point where I don't think I can really add anything substantial or important to the topic. The pros have very much said what needs to be said.

HOWEVER. I ALSO LIKE TO HAVE FUN WITH FUCKING CHARACTERS. I LIKE TO EXPLORE DIFFERENT TOPICS AND SITUATIONS WITH THEM. I WANT PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO SHAMELESSLY ENJOY THEIR RIGHT TO INTERPRET CHARACTERS WHERE THEY THINK NESCECARY. WHERE THEY THINK FUCKING FUN!!!

So with that said, while demeaning female characters to singular sad and one dimensionsional traits of "Mother" is very clearly to me Not A Good Thing, people should stop acting like it's a fucking sin to imagine the possibility of a character having a child while still retaining all their accurate attributes, because it is a very possible thing that can be and IS done!!!!!

Where do I BEGIN. How about the inspirations behind the character of undyne herself.

Ok so see this wonderful lass here. That's a sculpture by Chauncey Ives of the mythical water spirit, Undine. Thinking about it, you all probably know this anyway because I do fairly often reblog Undine themed stuff too. Because I'm just like this. But how about the interesting stuff?

The original myth, created by Paracelsus, an alchemist and philosopher born in the 1400s, I believe comes from his work "A Book on Nymphs, Sylphs, Pygmies, and Salamanders, And Kindered Spirits". I think that's what it was called. I'm too tired to talk fully about it specifically and we need to get to the point so have a video of some guy reading it here

It's pretty much what it says. Paracelsus essentially believed that elemental beings (whom he had adapted and reimagined from ancient or traditional at the time sources) were simply part of the strangeness of God's natural creation and should be studied, as part of appreciation of the Bible etc. And we know ALL ABOUTTTTT utdr and its biblical links/imagery. But back to undine :]

Paracelsus named his takes on the classic concept of elementals: gnomes for earth (YES HE INVENTED THE WORD GNOME!!!!!), sylphs for air (yeah he also invented the word sylph), salamanders for fire (he didn't invent that :[), and of COURSE! UNDINES FOR WATER! He believed undines to be fairly similar to humans, a significant difference being the lack of a soul. Which surely means nothing when talking about Souls Are Important the Video Game. And anyways according to him they were apparently fairly capable of getting a soul through love. Wikipedia also says that Paracelsus says that a child from this love will too have a soul which is nice

I think she can and should be enjoying her life with alphys rather than it being a thing just for a living soul or whatever. They're just happy, no mythology attached

Onto the most iconic interpretation of the myth, 1811s Undine by Friedrich De La Motte Fouque. When you think of the tale of Undine it's almost always that it's this specific story you pull from. Apart from another one I'll briefly touch on later (please hope it's brief). In it, Undine is a woman adopted by a fisherman, who was taken in by the fisherman after his own child died. Hmmmmm wow hmm sort of like how asgore took in undyne after his children died HM BACK ON TOPIC. Personality-wise, Undine is described by Wikipedia (because I don't have the book) as "erratic", and "capricious", which Google dictionary describes as "given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behaviour", which again sounds quite similar to the Undyne we all know and love.

It mentions that when married to Huldbrand (the main guy in the book he's not important tho) she is "kind and gentle" and yeah imo the writing with this IS kinda shit HOWEVER I think if were simply using this as inspiration for undyne I can definitely imagine her *eventually* becoming a calmer and more thoughtful person with A: the presence of someone like alphys to mutually love and understand her for her and B: the absence of having to worry about a war to fight and always sort of being on edge and just being. Like that. And again this would all be a *progressive experience*, rather than in the book where undine literally switches up over night. I do like to consider character and stuff

Ok so truthfully I don't find anything else from that specific story that I find particularly helpful to undyne, the rest of it's kinda just useless to my point. Re-establishing the fact here that I skipped over a most of the actual significant parts of the story because I specificly want to talk about how I see it parallel to undyne. But that's it really. I just especially wanted to mention this adaptation of the story as it is pretty much the most iconic interpretation of the myth.

That is, interpretations that specifically refer to its source by name. Because by far the most well known media to draw influence from the myth of undine is the iconic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, "The Little Mermaid". I don't have much to say on how the little mermaid does take much inspiration from undine, other than the way andersen himself interpreted the story. Simply, the fact that Hans Christian Andersen, a man who based this story off of his own feelings at the inability for another man to reciprocate feelings of romance for him, and resonated with the story of undine so much that it was a source of inspiration for the little mermaid itself is so crazy to me. Like. Here is a queer man who read the tale of Undine and understood it so much he wrote his own story inspired by it and made it tie in with his own experiences of homosexuality! Like that's so crazy to me! Because it just makes the undertale character of undyne being sapphic so much better to me! It took the sad story of gay tragedy and took it and made it a story of gay joy!!!!!!! We are all so happys forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok ummmm. I got carried away because we are steering very far away from what this post was originally about. Umm. Point is. Original story was of queer sadness but undertale is now of queer joy + the story of queer joy being based on story where being with this person who you really love and being truly and properly bonded in an undeniable and magical way is enough to give you a soul that will live forever. I think that's somewhere near the point I'm trying to make but at the same time it's not quite the point I was trying to make. And this is absolutely just one interpretation of one relationship and this is by no means in any way supposed to be the end all be all of what ANY relationship should be. I really don't think this is what the definition of love is. However for these characters I feel it can be a huge aspect of it for them

Oh undyne. With some of the implications in game that she lost her family, I very much imagine her being cautious with this sort of situation. Would she be able to handle is for example? Would she know what to do. Given its something she might not even have real first hand experience of, is it something she would even want to risk forcing upon another person? I think she struggles so much with responsibility as it is. She wants nothing more than to protect people and cheesus if she had a kid of her own you know she would be doing every single thing in her power to make sure that kid never has to face what she did. Undyne says at one point in game (if you kill her in neutral i believe) she never told alphys the way she felt because if/when she died in battle, she wouldn't want alphys to deal with that. And again, she really would not want to have a kid if she worries that one day that kid would have to worry about someone they truly care about not being with them anymore

So *would* she want them? I don't really think it would be an overwhelming innate desire or anything like that, but really not against it. Sged need a lot of time beforehand first. Some time to live her life to the fullest, time to make sure it's something she can handle without guilt, time to make sure it's something that does bring her joy. And then yeah, 6 or 7 years minimum I can see it happening. And I think it would be nice

I don't really have anything to add I just think alphyne should adopt susie. In every timeline. Undertale deltarune I just think ok. Because she doesn't have a good home life to the point where she's like just Not Safe and hm young couple with no children in her area? Undyne would want to help her soooo bad because she understands just what it feels like to be young and alone not really cared for and she would NEED to fix it. That's defo how it is for undertale at LEAST. Idk entirely with dr if it'd be exactly like that cause we don't know what undynes got going down in dr yet.. but even so that's nothing to stop them

To the best I can figure, here’s a very rough timeline of the interesting points in House’s life, leading to S1:

1991: Wilson and House meet at a medical convention in New Orleans

1994: House meets Stacy in a game of paintball with Lawyers v Doctors

1995: House gets the Esther case (on wiki the exact words are “in or around 1994” and I like to think that this case, which kinda screwed with House a bit, was a stepping stone in the Stacy/House relationship

1996: House is hired at PPTH by Cuddy

1996/1997: Wilson is hired at PPTH through a suggestion by House ( Wilson could have actually been hired basically at any point after House was hired until S1, 2004, but me thinks this is just the prime time for Wilson to be hired bc then within the two years, he marries Bonnie and spends his entire time with House after the infarction)

1999: The Infarction and Stacy’s leaving

2002: Chase is hired onto the House team after a call by his father

2004: 6 months before the start of S1, Cameron was brought into to the team and three days before, Forman was hired.

Everytime I get into an mascot-horror type story/arg that presents the company and characters as “some huge thing of the past, now completely forgotten- the main character is uncovering stuff again” I always wonder what’s the online impact of it besides just fully forgotten

On one hand I know not everything is on the internet. A lot of shows and old media really are forgetting forever.

…But on the other hand I just know some, just one of these, HAVE to have someone who was to be obsessed to it to the point of creating some “hey remember this from our childhoods- what happened?” youtube video. Or someone writing and posting fanfic, making art no matter how obscure the franchise was. Or at least someone who DID do that years ago, and that stuff is still floating out there on the internet sphere.

At least with the args I’ve touched upon I haven’t seen the possibility of the main character finding out more (or even finding answers to some mysteries) via some randomly-obsessed internet stranger.

Or going the route of making a post, and video online and trying to find information there. Potentially collaborating with popular youtubers for help. Maybe it’s just because I follow too many youtube commentators who make videos on old/nostalgia content so it’s skewing my perception but…idk

(hii Spot been awhile) Something I think that's interesting about the observation about how Slugcats are getting so much attention nowadays is that its almost a 180 from how things were in the pre-downpour days, iirc.

Though I am glad we're getting an AU like yours it's so interesting compared to the usual

Yeah, the fandom was not particularly strong back then, but I think there was more Iterator content. My suspicion as to why slugcats are so much more popular now is because the general "cat appeal"*. Downpour brought in wider audience which mostly consists of people that go wild over cat videos on the internet.

Not my intention to throw shade on it, because after all what does my opinion matter to anyone, but I find the whole "cuteness cult" of the internet annoying and, when applied to Rain World, frustrating. There's a whole silent worldbuilding in basically every screen of the game and the only thing that people seem to take away post-DP is "cute sluggy go wooo :3 the Ancients were such cultist pricks Dx". Which like alright, but expand a little on the latter please? Try? There is So much fun to it when one moves past the "religion only BAD" mindset.

DP also I think didn't care much about the Ancients and the culture they left behind (and therefore the root of Iterators). "But there's Saint!" Saint is almost everything new that wasn't heard of before, can be taken as another fact of monstroid mad religion and, of course, it Has to be wrapped in a fluffy cat package. The undergrowth Echo also feels like a spit in the face to the lore/religion than an addition, to me. My *guess* would be the original intention was showing an individual who failed to ascend because of the Fifth Hindrance but it doesn't *feel* like it. If that was the intention, I think the author didn't understand why a desire to live/survive could ever, in any form, be bad

It's interesting as well in the sense that when there was only Survivor, maybe up to Hunter- the slugcats felt like a vehicle that brings the player to the story. The player saw the world through their eyes and got to experience the world's rules, abiding them- the original campaigns were still subject to the lore/religion of the world.

DP made the slugcats characters, the main focus, in some cases a rebelion against the lore/religion (forever beef against new route for Survivor and Monk). So people had an easier time latching onto them.

That is my theory at least. Fact is also when I first watched RW I almost didn't get into it as a creator because I felt like I had nowhere to hook to and work with. Characters are great anchor points for people to latch on to and then work with/through, so it's not like I blame the fandom for quite literally getting slug infested. It's natural and logical and I'm well aware of it as someone who's trying to be a writer. Still frustrating.

Either way, at least there's a vacuum for me to fill with something I'm actively actually passionate about. It's kind of a sweet bonus that people are somewhat interested, too.

Oh, sure! For starters, I'm a vampire but my teeth are straight and white. I have pale white skin. I'm also a witch, and I go to a magic school called Hogwarts in England where I'm in the seventh year (I'm seventeen). I'm a goth (in case you couldn't tell) and I wear mostly black. I love Hot Topic and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a black corset with matching lace around it and a black leather miniskirt, pink fishnets and black combat boots. I was wearing black lipstick, white foundation, black eyeliner and red eye shadow. I was walking outside Hogwarts. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. A lot of preps stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them.
