Writing Notes: Nonverbal Communication
Tumblr media
Nonverbal Communication - encompasses a whole host of physicalized nonverbal cues that convey emotional states and complement verbal messages.
Types of Nonverbal Communication
There are many different forms of nonverbal communication. The main categories of nonverbal cues include:
Kinesics (or body movements): These include deliberate hand gestures and head movements like a thumbs-up or affirmative head shake. This is one of the most easily controllable of the nonverbal forms of communication.
Proxemics (or closeness/personal space): This is the measure of physical distance between people when they communicate. The standard amount of personal space expected by someone varies depending on setting and is somewhat culture-specific.
Posture: The way that you sit or stand and how open your body is to others around you communicates a lot about your attitude and emotional state.
Eye contact: This is one of the primary ways that human beings gauge interest or disinterest. Wavering eyes tend to communicate unease or even dishonesty.
Touch: Many interactions begin with an exchange of physical touch like a hug or a handshake.
Paralanguage: This category covers vocal qualities like loudness or tone of voice. Paralinguistic signals are any aspect of the sound of a voice outside a direct verbal translation of words being spoken.
Facial expressions: Facial expressions are one of the main indicators of someone’s attitude. An emotional expression like a frown or smile can be hard to consciously control.
Physiology: This category includes changes in body physiology like an increase in sweat or blinking rapidly. These are nearly impossible to deliberately control.
Tips for Understanding Nonverbal Communication
In your everyday life, there are many scenarios where an understanding of nonverbal communication can be used to your advantage. Knowing how to decode nonverbal cues can improve your communication skills in many ways. Here are some ways to improve your awareness of nonverbal cues:
Look for inconsistencies. Knowing how to spot signs of nervousness like fidgeting or evasive eyes is a great way to determine whether the person you are speaking with is trustworthy. If nonverbal behavior seems to run counter to the verbal messaging, it’s likely that the speaker is not entirely comfortable with what they are saying.
Be conscious of cultural differences. It’s important to be aware of the different mannerisms and physical gestures that are common in different cultures. Nonverbal interpersonal communication varies around the world. Don’t rush into judging the nonverbal cues you are picking up from someone from a different country or culture, as they may connote something entirely different in their culture.
Observe nonverbal signals holistically. It’s important to observe a variety of nonverbal cues that are being communicated to you. Just because someone has a sweaty brow doesn’t mean they are nervous. Similarly, a twitch in someone’s hand may just be an unconscious tic. Try to view nonverbal signals holistically in order to get a fuller picture of what a person is communicating.
The Importance of Understanding Nonverbal Communication
Understanding different types of nonverbal communication is important in order to control the messages you are communicating and to decode the emotional states of others. Here are a few of the ways understanding nonverbal cues can make you a more effective communicator:
To show interest: Nonverbal signals are a great way to communicate attentiveness and engagement to those around you. Controlling your posture and eye contact will demonstrate to others that you are interested in what they have to say.
To convey specific meaning: Many words have multiple different meanings, and the things we say can often be misheard. Learning how to complement your words with nonverbal communication can prevent misinterpretation and miscommunication.
To establish connection: Nonverbal communication is a great way to establish connection and trust. It’s no accident that many cultures see some sort of physical gesture like a handshake or hug as necessary in certain types of personal interactions.
To demonstrate authenticity: Your nonverbal communication goes a long way in establishing the authenticity of your feelings to those you are speaking with. Complementing your actual words with direct eye contact and confident posture will demonstrate to others that you are giving voice to your true feelings.
Nonverbal human communication involves many different parts of the body and can be either conscious or subconscious on the part of the communicator.
Some forms of nonverbal communication, like a handshake or head nod, are conscious actions meant to communicate something deliberately.
Other nonverbal forms of communication, like a nervous hand twitch or a quiver in the voice, subconsciously reveal emotional states that the communicator might not want shared.
Learning how to decode nonverbal communication and how to control all aspects of communication for yourself are great ways to improve your interpersonal skills.

How to Reply to Fic Comments
Saw this poll asking authors why they don't reply to comments on their fic. Realized I've seen a number of posts about how to comment on fic, but I haven't seen one with advice to authors on how to reply to comments! (There's probably one out there, but hey, the more the merrier 🎉)
As an author who replies to virtually every fic comment (albeit with a 3-5 business day waiting period), here are some of my strategies:
1. Disclaimer/Why Reply?
A fic author isn't obligated to reply to comments, but if you're a writer and WANT to reply but don't know how/feel too anxious to do so, then this post is for you! Responding to people who comment on your fic can be fun, it can make your fic a living story (even if you're done posting it, you're still engaging the ideas in conversation!), and it can jumpstart short or long term friendships in fandom as you chat about things you love together.
2. Just say "thank you"
A lot of authors in the above linked poll say that they feel bad or anxious about just replying "thank you," especially to a longer comment. However, I've never been anything but happy to get an author's reply--of any length--when I leave a comment. Even just a "💖" reply from them makes me feel seen! Think about your experience: would you rather get nothing back or get a brief "thank you" from an author? Would you be mad at them for not writing some ~super eloquent~ response to your happy keyboard smash? Would you complain if it took them a week to send that reply? Of course, not!
Don't stress the length or originality or punctuality of your reply, just know that any amount of kindness is appreciated.
3. Expand on the Basics
Want to add more to your "thank you"? Start with some basic forms of gratitude that can apply to almost any comment!
Add emojis 💖🥰🎉😍🌈👌
Add an action, ex. "Thank you for reading" "Thank you for taking the time to read/comment" "Thank you for such an insightful review/analysis of the story"
Add your emotion! "This comment made my whole week" "so happy to see this comment in my inbox" "I'm so glad you enjoyed the story"
Advanced: Remember, we're all fans here! You can squee in a comment reply, you can be giggling and kicking your feet. If a reader says "I am chewing on this fic" you can say "*adds salt and angst*" Have fun with it! Be free of the cringe panopticon!
4. Get Specific
An easy way to start writing more complex replies is to mirror the format of the comment. Take it as a template; look at each sentence/phrase and reply specifically to that piece.
Plot: "I'm really excited to see what happens next 👀" -> "I can't wait to share the next chapter 🤩"
Writing skill: "your characterization is soooo good" -> "thank you, I've really been focusing on character voice lately!" or you can share more personal feelings -> "I'm always worried about sounding ooc, it's such a relief to know the characters rang true"
Emotions: "this made me cry for real 😭" -> "I was crying while writing it 😭" or "angst is my favorite thing to write" or "your tears feed the author's angst-machine 😈"
Bonus: try to take compliments gracefully rather than reject them! Fight the impulse to be self-deprecating and deflect or minimize your work (ex. "i don't think so but thanks anyway" "I should've spent more time editing" "I usually suck at X"). Someone read your work and liked it--do them the courtesy of believing what they say.
5. Behind the Scenes
This is your chance to share your writing process! Writing can be a lonely thing but fandom gives you people to share it with. Most fans who take the time to comment are interested in hearing more from the author!
In your comment reply, you can talk about how and when you wrote the piece ("I wrote that ending on my phone on the bus haha"), why you did ("I hadn't seen any fics about X so I decided to write it myself!"), choices you made while writing ("I thought about doing Plot Thing A, but decided to go with Plot Thing B because it seemed funnier"), about emotions you felt ("I was so sad after the season finale, I wanted to write something fluffy but oops, it turned into hurt/comfort with a lot of hurt!") or challenges you faced ("I ended up doing a ton of research on Topic Z to make it feel real and accurate").
As you build a rapport with a commenter (and if you reply to comments, your chances are much better that you'll get a repeat commenter to build that lovely relationship with) it will get even easier and more fun. You can reference past chapters or other works, talk about the shared specific things you love about those characters/fandoms, and maybe develop a real friendship: make a character playlist together, see if they're interested in beta-ing your work, or joining a shared Discord server.
At the end of the day, the best guidance is simply to have fun and be kind! 🌈

Hiiii, this is kind of a weird one but could you do smth on how to be nicer to people? I always feel like I'm unintentionally mean and I make jabs at them intending to be joking but it's just mean. I'm not really sure how to get my humor across in a kind way sometimes and I just want to work on being nicer. Thank you soooo much xx
Hi love! Here are my tips:
When in doubt, keep the conversation light-hearted and impersonal. 99% of the time, it's better to say too little vs. too much
If you must joke around, use self-focused humor instead. This form of humor is unlikely to offend another person too much and often demonstrates a lot of self-awareness/confidence when done correctly
Approach conversations, and any jokes you want to inject within an interaction, with empathy. Before making a joke, consider how you would feel on the receiving end of the same remark. If you're not sure, save yourself and don't say it
Allow the other person to break the ice when it comes to cracking jokes. It's easier to make jokes that land well when you understand the other person's sense of humor first. Even if the person doesn't find your joke funny, they likely won't be offend if it falls within their range of comfortability and interpersonal boundaries
Hope this helps xx

Creative play is an essential part of early childhood development. It helps children explore their world, express themselves, and learn important skills. In a preschool in Duncanville, Texas, creative play often involves activities such as drawing, building with blocks, or role-playing. These activities are not only fun, but they also allow children to develop cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills. Through play, children can practice making choices, using their imagination, and learning how to communicate effectively.

Ive heard many give advice to us women such as "put yourself first (especially in relationships) and etc.
It got me wondering... sometimes sacrifices should be done especially in a relationship. Some people act like you should put yourself to the point you're being selfish, now as I said I'm talking about this in a relationship context.
What I'm trying to ask is, what level of "putting yourself first" is toxic in a relationship?
People tend to over-idolize romantic relationships, so I believe the answer to this question is fairly simple. Consider how much you would sacrifice to reach a compromise in a platonic friendship. Similar boundaries apply and offer a good starting point to figure out these limitations.
For example, no one should have to sacrifice their career, desire to get married/not get married, have or not have kids, or their core values/lifestyle habits like diet, exercise, etc. to make a relationship work. Compromising what to have for dinner, the show you're watching on TV a couple of nights a week, keeping the bathroom a little neater, etc. should not be a problem if you value the relationship.
Personally, I believe moving purely for a partner's preferences or life path and/or cutting people out of your life they don't particularly mesh with, choosing your outfits/haircut/makeup, etc. based on their preferences are giving too much, but that's my opinion.
Everyone's relationships are different, so as long as both parties feel appreciated and respected, you should do as you both please.
Hope this helps xx
