Summary: A young girl finds a soldier hiding in the hayloft on her father’s farm. Intrigued, she visits him more and more until her father finds out and puts him to work. As they grow closer, something else grows too.

Author’s note: Based on the song Hayloft by Mother Mother and the lovestory of my grandparents. I am Dutch and the war was a bit different here, so I will be basing this on the stories I’ve heard about my grandparents.

‘What happened miss Hill?‘ ‘A miscalculation.‘ She gets a smack in the face. ‘We do not tolerate miscalculations. Your mission failed.‘ ‘Yes sir, it will not happen again.‘ A miscalculation. No, she saw something in his face. Something familiar. Something that made her think of her past. Of the smell of hay and old books. There’s something missing from her memories, that much she knows.

‘Okay, spill,‘ Tony demands when Bucky is stitched up. The whole group gathered in the lab where the blood Bucky lost on the floor hasn’t even dried yet. Bucky feels hesitant to tell them the memories that still feel so fresh. Especially since he lost them for a while. Steve puts his hand on Bucky’s shoulder and gives him a small smile to show his confidence in Bucky. ‘That girl is called Jenny Richelle Hill,‘ he explains, ‘she’s the daughter of a farmer and used to work in a post office. Her family hid three stowaways from the army. Johnny who was a childhood friend of hers, Timothy who had just turned eighteen and was terrified, and me.‘ ‘You were a stowaway,‘ Bruce asks in disbelief. ‘I was indeed. I’m not proud of it, but I had my reasons.‘ Peter seems utterly confused at the whole conversation. ‘I’m sorry, weren’t stowaways usually shot,‘ he asks. ‘They weren’t at this point,‘ Steve quickly explains, ‘but Bucky already had military experience before he ran.‘ Tony hums, seemingly agreeing with the short explanation. ‘And this all turned into some hookup in the hayloft,‘ he asks Bucky a bit sarcastically. It seems to be a shot in Bucky’s heart. He looks hurt and his eyes seem to water. ‘As typical as it sounds, yes,‘ he answers Tony with a shaky voice, trying to keep himself big, ‘I fell in love with her and as I told you before, I was planning to marry her after the war.‘ ‘I take it you were taken away, so they found out about you at one point,‘ Bruce states, leaning on his desk as he tries to take it all in. ‘Sorry, I can’t believe you are this upset if it was just a lover,‘ Tony sighs and turns around to get back to work. Peter can see Bucky getting closer to anger with his words. ‘What do you want me to tell you?‘ ‘The truth!‘ ‘I told you the truth,‘ he screams in Tony’s face, ‘that woman meant the world to me.‘ After a few seconds of silence and Tony’s surprised face, Bucky realizes how angry he had gotten. He looks around the room in a panic and storms off. Steve sighs and rubs his forehead. ‘What’s up with him,‘ Tony angrily asks. ‘You really don’t understand it, do you,‘ Steve mocks him, ‘the man only ever loved one woman and now she’s being used to get him back to Hydra because they know she’s his weakness. That’s probably why she’s still alive today.‘ ‘At least we know her motives.‘

Ricky fiddles with the necklaces around her neck. Her room is a mess. She tried to go through every book she had, trying to see if one of them would trigger her memories but her search was unsuccessful. Through her mind runs a memory, but the context is completely gone. ‘I’m so sorry, I wish I could stay.‘ ‘I know‘ ‘Promise you’ll still be there to give that back to me?‘ ‘I promise.‘ She reads the necklaces once again. The longer one reads She loves him passionately and the shorter one reads His soul seemed always attentive to her. It looks like there were supposed to be names on the back, but they’re filed off. She knows she’s read those quotes before. They’re somewhere in the back of her mind with the smell of hay and old books. It’s like those memories are locked behind metal doors. Metal. Why had she been surprised at the sight of the metal arm of the winter soldier? She knew he had a metal arm and yet, somewhere deep within, it hurt to see it. Why did it hurt to see it?

‘Either we find her first or she finds us first, for the sake of Bucky’s health, I say we storm Hydra,‘ Steve announces. Tony shakes his head in disbelief and annoyance. ‘Do you even know where they are?‘ ‘Right here,‘ Steve points at a map. ‘That’s a ghost town.‘ ‘And it’s also the location of the farm,‘ he tells them, ‘the farm was burned down weeks after it was announced that Bucky was lost. Reports say that a woman by the name Jenny was picked up with an ambulance from collapsing at work that day, but the woman and the ambulance were never seen again.‘ ‘Agent Betty,‘ Tony says, eyes now full of life and interest. ‘Mister Stark, I found some pictures,‘ Peter mumbles as he walks into the conference room. ‘Not now Peter.‘ ‘They’re pictures of Agent Betty,‘ he explains, ‘Bruce and I were looking for pictures of her on the internet and we found a few interesting ones.‘ Peter lays them down. The first picture is a picture of Ricky at her job, smiling at the camera. The news article reads: Men from home? No worries. Steve sighs at the sexism. He wished things were different at that time. The second picture is one of Ricky sitting by a tree with three men, one of them being Bucky, and having a smoke. She seems to be wearing the same uniform seen in the past picture. The third picture looks to be of Ricky as well, but you can only see her back. She’s on her knees, seemingly praying, in front of ashes. Probably the farm that was burned down, but there is something in the background. ‘You see that,‘ Peter points at the thing in the background, ‘it looks like a compound.‘ ‘Well, that does it. Gather everyone, we need a plan.‘

An old, leather-bound book catches Ricky’s eye. Did she not check that one? She grabs it and reads the title. Of Sons and Lovers. ‘Heard of it, haven’t had the chance to read it. Will you read it to me?‘ Who wanted her to read to them? Was it her family? A friend? She feels like it wasn’t anyone she had known for a long time. Suddenly, red lights start flashing, the alarm sounds, people start screaming. The door to her room slams open and sergeant Winter storms in. ‘Get ready Agent Betty,‘ he announces, ‘the winter soldier is coming.‘ As if a switch was flipped, she jumps up and gets geared up. While she’s walking down the hallway she takes her knives out of their holsters. As she keeps walking, she hears more and more ruckus. Loud gunshots and screaming is heard. And then he’s there in front of her. The man with the metal arm. The winter soldier. ‘Ricky,‘ he sighs. He almost looks relieved at the sight of her. She frowns and runs towards him, starting to go at him like she did last time. ‘Ricky, please stop,‘ he begs her while not doing anything to hurt her. She starts to get frustrated and for some reason, tears start filling up her eyes. ‘Fight back you coward,‘ she screams at him. He just grabs her wrists and squeezes until she has to drop the knives. ‘No.‘ He watches her eyes grow sad and angry. He lets go of her hands, but she doesn’t do anything. ‘I’m supposed to bring you back here,‘ she yells at him, ‘why can’t I do it?‘ The hurt in her eyes and the conflict is something he remembers very well. He’s still struggling with it. ‘It’s okay.‘ ‘No it’s not,‘ she screams and kicks him in the knee, making him fall to the ground, ‘you’re coming with me.‘ She tries to kick him in the face like last time, but is lifted up. Bucky looks up to see Steve holding her. ‘Ready to leave?‘ Bucky nods and the two start making their way down the hallway. While Steve carries Ricky, Bucky incapacitates the soldiers coming their way. She feels terrible. She has failed. She is incapable to do the one thing she was told to do. And she feels worthless.

continued from here, and got surprisingly shippy for an AU that wasn’t originally meant to be

Tony torn between awe and mortification as he carefully shifted his weight and slowly made his way outside. 

Just. Wow.

Not five minutes, and Betty Ross had managed to successfully derail the conversation from whatever her father had in mind— thought the part of his brain that wasn’t coming up with escape routes was very interested in whatever project this ‘Rebirth’ was, for it to involve bioengineering as well as Bruce’s specialty in physics but not now— and swept everyone else out of her tiny office, without so much as a hint that she was hiding anything. Such as, say, the only son and heir of Howard Stark, not that anyone in the room knew that.

...and now Thunderbolt Ross was operating under the assumption that Betty Ross and Bruce Banner were officially dating, instead of performing the single most awkward ‘dancing around the other’ routine the entire campus had seen in the past five years if rumors were anything to go by.

Yeah, whoops.

Okay, new mission: apart from learning All The Things and getting Uncle James up to speed, Tony now had to evade Thunderbolt Ross while also running support for the surprise fake dating thing, while still making it look as if everything was business as normal. 

Okay, cool, cool. 

He could do this, he had everything under control, no need to worry mom about it, everything was fine.

Pro: ...so apparently he had a reputation on campus for eccentricity. Enough so that his running around even more somehow was waved off as normal. Tony would’ve been offended if it weren’t so useful. Also, turns out that living on the run and breaking into countless HYDRA bases, both before and after he built his suit, meant he actually had a good head for stealth.

Con: Tony had signed up to be a college student. Sure, he was a pretty good fixer, kind of hard not to, considering his family tree and living the life he had. 

Please note that nowhere on that list was relationship counselor.

“It just slipped out!” Betty griped as she leaned against the closed door of her office, chugging the coffee he’d brought her. “I’d been wanting to— and then you were here and dad was there and I just panicked—”

“She doesn’t see me that way,” Bruce sighed as he sipped at his cup. “You heard her. She just did it to distract her father—”

“—as if I’d throw him under the bus, he’s never looked at me that way and I’d hate to ruin everything—”

.

“—feel so stupid, I should’ve noticed—”

.

“—I regret everything.”

.

“You got that, Butterfingers?” Tony asked quietly, and the quiet vibration in his pocket was enough of an answer that he no longer felt like screaming at these two... they were both brilliant, and he was shamelessly a huge fan of both their work, but dearly beloved fuck were his friends both idiots when it came to each other and he’d had enough.

Also, thanks to Butterfingers and JARVIS, enough audio and security camera footage to prove his point.

Sure, maybe creating a multi-slide PowerPoint presentation on how ridiculously gone for each other and having it play on loop while locking them both in the same room was overkill, but honestly? 

He didn’t even care anymore. He’d seen operational write-ups of psychological warfare less effective than what these two had going on.

Betty punched his shoulder and Bruce glowered the next time he saw him. 

...but they were still talking to him, and holding hands the time after that, so Tony counted it a win.

Everything was fine, right up until it wasn’t.

Claims for artists are open! The first round will go this week and then I'll post a new round on Thursday, opening it up for seconds. Everybody spread the word! Grab your artist friends, stuff them in a potato sack, and drag them here kicking and screaming if you have to! This year, art claims are working a little differently than in years past. We are using a google form to streamline things, which should make things easier both for you as participants and us mods. To claim a story, the form requires email, check in ID, and the identifying number of your first choice of story. Putting your top three choices is best in case your first or second has already been chosen. Please be sure you've read the FAQ before claiming.

If Superman/Clark/Kal-El, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, Lana Lang, Lex Luthor, Pa Kent & Ma Kent ALWAYS existed in the Marvel Universe (and only those DC chars), how different could their lives be if they lived there? Especially if Hulk/Bruce Banner, Betty Ross and other "The Incredible Hulk" chars AREN'T around in that 'verse?

I have literally been thinking about this ask for days because I can not make up my mind on what I think would happen

Like, if it’s set so that the, what Imma call ‘Superman People’ are the only ones from DC that come into the Marvel Universe and the ‘Hulk People’ are gone, it leaves me to wonder what would happen if Superman were to act out like he did with Injustice. Since there is no Batman, perhaps Tony would be the one to come up with a device or machine to control and/or defeat Superman, much like his Hulkbuster. There’s also Thor, who is a literal God, but Superman has been compared to God strength as well so Tony’s ‘Supermanbuster’ would help give him an upper hand.

I also have been talking with several other of my nerdy friends about this and there’s nothing better than in-depth nerd talk at one in the morning while slightly buzzed. Hearing ‘SuperBust!’ being screamed by one of your dude friends is also interesting.

Needed Interactions: Bruce Banner

They say Hulk and Rocket will be friends in “Endgame”...

...and by fuck they better deliver now! And it better not just be Hulk, but Bruce Banner as well! Don’t you dare tell me it would be too “weird” for Bruce Banner (and Tony Stark, and Shuri, and god willing a resurrected Hank Pym) to do science stuffs with a raccoon. You’re the ones who made an MCU movie with a talking raccoon. If he’s good enough for Chris Pratt, he’s good enough for Ruffalo, RDJ, and the rest. 

Bruce should’ve been the one to give her that pep-talk at the end of “Ultron.”

In fact, having Hawkeye be the one of the Original Six most defending her looks really bad, since Hawkeye is the only one she didn’t manage to mind-fuck. It would mean a lot more if Brcue Banner--the one she mind-fucked the worst (to make an understatement) had that role. If you want to convince the viewers not to hate Wanda, I think most will be a lot more responsive to Bruce Banner’s opinion than Hakweye’s. 

He should also “adopt” Shuri.

Since the “he” here isn’t Tony Stark, I assume I won’t have a chorus of voices screaming, “But Shuri still has a mom and a brother! Stop trying to erase her family!” 

Anyway, Tony has a nerd “son” who makes him feel old with pop-culture references, so Bruce may as well have a nerd “daughter” who makes him feel old with her advanced tech. 

At the same time, Shuri kind of needs to....um.....not be the literal best at everything. I worship the ground she walks on, but outdoing every other character at everything is the sort of thing that can only last for a couple movies. I fear if she doens’t start struggling with something in the next movie she’s in... that won’t be good for how the fandom perceives her.  How about if she’s superior to Bruce in the lab, but the Hulk is something she has not had to ever deal with before. It would be a lot like Bruce and Nat’s relationship but platonic. 

I know Bruce and Betty aren’t dating anymore, but you don’t just forget the first person who stood by you against her army general father when you first became the Hulk

I really like to head-canon that Betty works at a lab with Jane Foster now, and still speaks out against her jackass father. What would Betty have to say to or about the Avengers, or her father? Does she still want to help Bruce? Has she moved on romantically? Was she wiped out in the Snap?

It’s usually procedure to meet your finance’s brother or best friend before announcing your engagement   Because Strange and Tony have such an interesting work-relationship, that’s professional, and absolutely not romantic or sexual, it would make sense for Strange to also team up with Bruce some more as well. 

Valkyrie! You know, the woman who worked for the guy that kept Bruce “trapped in a monster for two years.” 

Is Bruce mad at her? Or does he just not have the energy to care anymore? Could she be a potential love interest, if things don’t work out with Nat? Especially since it would be a lot harder for the Hulk to hurt her than most people?

Big List of Spooky Movies and Books!

I’m a notorious list-maker; I love collecting stories, and I also love sharing them with people who are either looking for ref or just want to find something interesting. “Spooky” is a pretty broad term, so I listed different categories below that will hopefully make more sense. Some movies/books fit into more than one category, so I picked one and stuck it there. Some stories have a film and book version that are both worth taking a look at, so I put a *by those titles (and they appear in the movie and book list). These range from being for kids to more mature, so if that is a concern for you be sure to check out the rating/content yourself

I wanted to limit myself, at least a little (otherwise the list would have gon on forever). So each category has at least 2 titles listed, but no more than 5. A few of these are more funny than scary, but they still fit the theme. Something to keep in mind, I only listed stories that I own. This is not a complete list or a “best of”. I went with the ones from my personal collection because I know them best and I enjoy them. BETTY WAS STRANDED AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY when it happened. shock settled over her like a weighted blanket. ( she wasn’t one to cry in the face of tragedy. ) pressed into the corner of her office, sheltered by the superficial comfort of two walls, she waited–––––––to wake up, to be found, or to vanish into nothingness herself. it was difficult to say. a chorus of screams and screaming sirens rose from the street level to her office window. she buried her face in her hands, pressing into her eyes until she saw stars. still, the nightmare continued. 

after some time, it became evident that there would be no savior and no relent. the girl’s ashes remained in a pile on the other side of her desk. undisturbed. unanimated. unmarked by a headstone. HER OFFICE WAS A CEMETARY NOW but betty wasn’t dying. perhaps she was a ghost left to haunt. she detested being the last one standing. 

betty reached for a pad of lined paper and a pen despite herself. her hands trembled all the while, but if she didn’t act now, she feared her body would seize up. she wrote a letter, as she did time and time before. the letters were all jagged edges and scratch-outs and typos.

the world has ended. i looked out the window. the streets are lined in collision after collision; the cars look like crushed soda cans. how many people died in the accidents? how many vanished? people say that the trains have shut down, that there were track collisions, too. more death. cellphones can’t get a signal. wifi is spotty at best. as I sit here in my office, i hear students crying in the quad . no, they’re wailing in grief. they’re too young for that, far too young. 

I held my lab technician’s ashes in my hands. ALISHA MARQUETTE, a bright girl interested in studying radiology from a physics perspective. she was going to intern with me over the summer. to watch her vanish into nothing, my first thought was her parents. I want to write it down now so that I can tell them what happened. it’s my duty to MEMORIALIZE her. or maybe her parents are gone as well, blown in fragments to the wind. which is worse? I can’t tell. 

( where have they vanished to? if anyone was to know, it would be you. i figured it would be worth the ask. )

MY LOGIC IS GONE. still waiting for it to come back. it’s only been an hour. i know i’m impatient but that’s the scariest part. there’s nothing to explain this. i draw up everything i’ve ever studied, everything i’ve ever heard of through the grapevine, from conspiracy theory enthusiasts––––and i’m blank.

OK SO Post-Deadpool 2 rant about my love for Wade (Deadpool) and Vanessa which will ONLY reference Deadpool 1, and explain why to me they are the #1 Canonical Marvel* ship in that I actually believe they are in love and I am happy about their love and want them to be happy together because they seem like real people in a real relationship.

1) They actually enjoy one another’s company.

In over 19 films, including an extended universe of iffy rights situations, we have had a metric fuckton of heterosexual (and/or het-presenting) romances. Yet with only a few exceptions, most of the couples can’t seem to stand one another most of the time. Probably the next closest after Wade/Vanessa?? Would be Steve Rogers/Peggy Carter, but even though they spent 99% of their time together at bootcamp or in wartime, they at least seemed to like each other and tried (though failed) to arrange going on a date, BUT  they don’t actually end up together because Steve takes a nosedive into the Arctic. 

The next runner up would be Tony/Pepper, again we’re only talking canonical, not the copious amounts of sexual tension between various other characters, and 90% of the time it seems like Pepper is begging Tony not to do the thing and the other 10% of the time she’s screaming because Tony Has Done the Thing. Like, look, I think their relationship is a runner up for #3 of most romantic in the slot but  that’s not saying much because if I were Pepper’s friend I’d be begging her to not go through with the wedding because I’m not sure her blood pressure can take it.

(I will add Quill/Gamora as #4 grudgingly because I remained unconvinced that Gamora even tolerated Peter much less liked him until Infinity War. As for the others... yeah in most cases, the less we speak of their complete lack of on-screen chemistry or sustained (ever to be mentioned again) romance the better (UGH SHARON AND STEVE UGH). Do Jean and Cyclops count? We’ve barely ever seen them affectionate but at least they were canonically dating and didn’t actively hate each other most of the time, not counting the whole Dark Phoenix murder thing.)

2) They have been on a date.

Marvel, honey, sweetie, baby, I am begging you. Let your romanced characters spend five seconds together that aren’t interrupted by explosions. Let us see these characters watching TV in their pajamas together like Wade and Vanessa did. Let me, for the love of god, believe they actually want to spend time together and make time for each other when not saving the world. Wade and Vanessa gave us the five most convincing minutes of romance I’ve seen in any superhero film. 

Was it even five minutes? I’m not sure they made it to the end of Calendar Girl but I was on board with these kinky, fun, joyfully trashy kids and their love for each other. I was totally on board with the fact that he’s falling even harder for her the minute he realizes he’s dying and I totally bought every second of her fighting like hell to save his life from cancer. I bought all of the rest of Deadpool 1 where he’s afraid of returning to her because he doesn’t want to lose her and he’s insecure about his appearance. I was angry at him, but it was clear the narrative and everyone in his life also thought he was being an insecure dumbass about it, and yet it was totally believable that he was an insecure dumbass, because we’d actually seen them falling in love and going on dates and being focused on one another for more than the 5 seconds it takes to set up the next action scene Marvel for the love of god I am begging you to follow suit it’s been three films since Tony and Pepper went to a fancy evening together I’m not sure they even remember what the other looks like anymore.

3) They are well matched.

Granted, we spend most of our time with Wade watching him dismember people BUT, before that we see Vanessa going toe to toe with him in 1) telling off sex creeps like Fat Gandalf and the stalker pizza guy, respectively 2) thinking the “big proposal” was going to be anal sex (with Vanessa requesting) and not an actual marriage (with Wade requesting) but the result was unequivocal joy for both of them for both proposals 3) having the same sense of dark humor about who has the more fucked-up life 4) being GGG super open and ok with each other’s wants and needs in the bedroom 5) making major sacrifices for each other like Wade not wanting to drag her into his fight with cancer and Vanessa putting her life on hold to help him find a cure. 

Again, I think Peggy and Steve were well matched, but they didn’t end up together. I think Pepper and Tony are decently matched, but they don’t share the same world and it’s clearly a burden on the relationship, and I say this as an adult observing and not as a shipper. Thor and Jane obviously didn’t happen. Who else is there? Bruce and Betty? Bruce and Nat? Both of those are practically non-canonical now. The above mentioned Quill/Gamora spent most of their time on screen with Gamora disdaining him. Ant-Man and Wasp will probably be love interests, but she spent most of their first film needing to babysit him on his personal journey while she was more qualified for everything he was doing. Did Dr. Strange even have a love interest and not just an ex he kissed unconvincingly in the heat of the moment??

My point is, Marvel is currently not great at this thing called romantic chemistry with their canonical relationships on the big screen. It’s probably why most of the fic out there is non-canonical ships. This isn’t about whether or not the character love each other, they’re fictional constructs, I argue more that while we see a lot of “I’d die for you” we don’t see a lot of “I’d sit on the couch with you and just enjoy your company on a lazy Sunday” outside of Wade and Vanessa and this is why I love them to death thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Bruce Banner had always been interested in science. His father had been in the same field, but had a mean streak within him. He felt like he would never be able to impress him, and their relationship suffered. In college, he fell in love with Betty Ross, and they eventually worked together. His accident with Gamma Radiation – in an attempt to replicate the Super Soldier Serum from Project Rebirth – was due to his cockiness. He never should have upped the dosage to impress (former) General Ross.

He tried to do everything to the best of his abilities, and it seemed like everything just kept biting him in the ass. After everything that had happened in Harlem, meeting Nick Fury, and a failed suicide attempt, he had tried to run.

He needed to get his monster under control.

He was able to be away for quite some time. That was, until Natasha Romanoff found him in India, and he was recruited into the Avengers Initiative. After meeting them, he learned how to use the other half off himself for good. He was finally getting to a good place, until Ultron. Specifically, the twins that Ultron had recruited for his cause. The girl twin, Wanda Maximoff, had caused him to go into a blind rage, and he destroyed an entire city. If Tony hadn’t stopped him, he didn’t know how many people he would have hurt.

It left a bad feeling in his gut.

When the battle in Sokovia was over, Ultron was destroyed and he left. He took a jet and left his life with the Avengers behind. He needed to find himself, again. He needed to control the rage, the anger, the guilt, the pain…

The Hulk crashed the jet near Fiji, and Bruce was hoping that it was remote enough to not get caught. After the jet was sunk in the ocean, he swam to one of the random islands scattered about, passing out on shore near a resort from exhaustion. It seemed like everything was just piling on his shoulders.

He dreamed of the Hulk. He dreamed of all the people he has hurt, all the cities he has destroyed, and all of the families he tore apart. As he lay on the beach in his dream, they all surrounded him. They screamed at him, they cried to him, and they called him the one thing he already knew he was: a monster.

“I’m sorry.” He cried to them, over and over, begging for forgiveness.

None of them could hear his cries as they closed in on him, pitchforks at the ready.

If I told you what I was / Would you turn your back on me? / And if I seem dangerous / Would you be scared?...

He startled awake, realizing that he was no longer on the beach. He was lying face down in a fluffy bed, covered in blankets.

“Oh, you’re awake!” A feminine voice came from behind him, sounding startled. This must be her bed. “You gave me a bit of a scare. I thought that you’d never wake up.”

He groaned, turning around to face the woman, but he stopped in astonishment. She was beautiful. Her Y/S/C skin a little red from being in the sun, dressed in a white sundress to cover her swimsuit. She had a floppy hat over her Y/H/C hair, to shade her from the sun. What startled him the most, was the kindness he saw in her Y/E/C eyes.

He hadn’t really ever been a man of religion, but he could have sworn that an angel was standing in front of him.

He cleared his throat, “Where am I?”

“Mana Island, in Fiji.” She smiled, pulling up a chair next to the bed and sitting down, crossing her smooth legs, “I found you on the beach a few days ago, and recognized you from a book I had read in college. I figured that you’d tried to get away for a reason, so I hid you.” She took a water bottle from the night stand, handing it to him to drink, “When the men came around with your picture, I told them that you were my husband, and that I hadn’t seen a Bruce Banner, or a Hulk.”

He sighed, running a hand down his face, “Thank you. I don’t know how I could ever repay you.”

“You can put some clothes on, and eat some food, for starters.” She joked, getting up and grabbing a smile pile of clothes that were piled on the dresser, “I hope these fit. I had to guess your size.” She walked over and handed him the pile, “The bathroom is through that door. I suggest a shower, as well.”

That was how it began.

She was there for, what was supposed to be her honeymoon, but had been left at the alter. She came, anyways, needing to get away from the looks of pity her family and friends were giving her. She had wanted a vacation, so she took a few months off from work, packed her shit, and came to Fiji.

“I should have known he was going to pull a stunt like that.” She shook her head as they walked down the beach a week or so later, “He was never really excited for the wedding. He just asked me, because he felt he had to.”

Bruce walked next to her, hiding under a hat and sunglasses, “I’m sorry that happened to you.” He stopped, grabbing your hand in comfort, “He is an idiot for letting someone as kind and giving as you go.”

She smiled, tucking a stray hair back with her free hand, “Why, Mister Banner, you flatter me.”

He laughed, pulling her along, “Come on, let’s go!”

He pulled her towards the water, running then jumping into a wave. She let out a shriek as the cold water washed over her sunned body. She was hit with another wave, and pulled him down with her as she was engulfed. They both came for air, sputtering and moving closer to shore so the water was only to their waist.

She grasped his shoulders with a laugh, since he was taller and the water was closer to her chest than his, “I don’t ever want to leave this place behind.”

“Neither do I.” He looked away, an ache forming in his chest as he thought about what he was going to do once this trip was over. “I have nowhere to go, and no way to get there.”

“You could always sneak into my suitcase and hitch a flight back with me.” She joked, moving one hand to frame his face, “I wouldn’t mind seeing you more, after this trip.”

“Really?”

She nodded, grinning as she leaned in, pressing her cold lips against his warm ones. He moved his hands to her waist, kissing her back with fever.

I get the feeling just because / Everything I touch isn't dark enough / If this problem lies in me…

When he woke the next morning, it was with her. They had spent the night, together. It was the best night he had ever had. She was slowly becoming the best woman he had ever met, and he realized that he was slowly developing feelings for her.

But what about Natasha?

Ah, crap. He had forgotten about Natasha. He had probably left her heartbroken when he left without her.

A wave of guilt overcame him as he walked out of the bedroom, pulling on a pair of shorts as he exited the room, and sat on the porch of the small villa they had been residing in. A small thought crossed his mind about calling her, but he dismissed that thought quickly. He couldn’t call her. She would track down his location and they would try and find him.

He didn’t even feel the same, anymore. He was falling for someone else.

“Are you okay?” Y/N asked from behind him.

He hadn’t realized that he was staring at the ocean with his hands wringing together with stress. “Yes, and no.” He turned, grabbing her hand and pulling her onto his lap, “Last night was perfect. I was just thinking about the team.”

“The Avengers, you mean?” She put her arm around him, running her hand through his hair in comfort, “Do you miss them?”

“More than I thought I would.” He sighed, closing his eyes in content, “I need to keep my distance, though. I can’t Hulk-out anymore. Not until I have my emotions under control.”

She leaned in, pressing her lips against his for a moment. When she pulled back, she was grinning, “So last night was perfect, you say? What about round two?”

A wicked grin spread across his face as he picked her up bridal-style, causing her to giggle. He pressed his lips against hers, walking back into the villa where they spent the rest of the day wrapped up in each other.

That evening, he had a date planned with her. They were going to go into town and eat somewhere local.

When she came out of the bathroom after getting ready, he nearly swooned at the sight of her. She had a red dress over a bikini, wedge heels, and had dolled herself up. He loved seeing her with or without makeup. He couldn’t get enough of her beauty.

The dinner had gone really well. They had tried some of the local foods, and nobody seemed to pay any mind to them. Meaning, nobody recognized him.

On their way back, though, their perfect night got interrupted.

They were walking on a quiet street, hand in hand, reminiscing about their lives, when Bruce felt the butt of a gun pressed into his back.

“Don’t make a sound. Hand over your money.” A sinister voice came from behind him.

Y/N gasped as a man wrenched her away from Bruce, gun pointed at her head.

“Now, guys, I think we can come to an understanding. Please, put the guns away.” Bruce said, trying to stay calm. “You don’t want to piss me off.”

Y/N looked at Bruce in fear, before pleading with the men, “He doesn’t have his wallet, but I have my purse. Just take it and leave us alone, please.” Her hands were shaking and she dropped her purse to the ground.

“Shut up, woman! Nobody asked you!” The man that was holding her roughly shoved her to the ground, a pained yelp escaping her mouth as she hit the ground.

Bruce tensed in anger.

Oh shit.

A growl came from his chest, and he felt the bones in his body start to tense and shift as his rage started to climb.

“Oh, shit, it’s that guy they were looking for that turns green!” The mugger panicked behind him, scrambling backwards.

Bruce looked at his hands, the green starting to color his tanned skin. “Run.” He ground out, falling to his knees.

Bang!

Y/N let out a pained scream.

“Oh, shit! What the hell, man! We weren’t supposed to shoot anyone!” One of them yelled, “Let’s get the fuck out of here.”

Through the red, angry haze in his vision, he saw Y/N clutching her arm to her chest. Blood spilled over her fingers, before she started crawling over to him, “Bruce!” The blood was coming from a gash – the bullet had only grazed her arm.

She threw herself at him, straddling his lap and wrapping her arms around his twitching shoulders, “Calm down! Please, calm down. They’ll find you if you turn into him.”

He was trying as hard as he could to fight the monster inside of him. He was gasping, eyes squeezed shut, writhing in pain as he fought to be free. He tried to let the feel of her pressed against his body anchor him – while desperately willing his bones to stay in place, and the color of his skin to go back to sunburnt.

“Shh, calm down.” She brushed her hand through his dark hair in a soothing manner, holding his shoulder tightly with her injured arm. “That’s it.”

The shaking in his body ceased and he unclenched his fists. Taking a deep breath, he wrapped his arms around her waist, pressing his face into the crook of her neck. “I’m sorry.”

100 Days of Comics! 074/100: The Incredible Hulk #400 (1992)

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOA this cover is very shiny and usually I’m against cover gimmicks but 400 is apparently thirty years of comics and this cover gimmick is pretty well handled.

And today’s selection from the box of mystery drops us in on an interesting moment in the Hulk’s life.

Recently, Hulk has been working with a group called Pantheon. But there was a difference in opinion regarding the Leader (as in the giant green head man) and Hulk stormed off.

So Pantheon leader (as in boss) Agamemnon pops up in Betty Banner’s (née Ross) bathroom mirror while she’s gargling to ask her where Hulk is.

A surprised spit take later and Agamemnon convinces Mrs. Banner to find Hulk for them. Her ride is Pantheon agent Prometheus who expects her to scream when she meets him.

Betty Banner: “I’m not surprised, since smoking is a filthy habit. Put it out, please.”

Prometheus: “Actually Mrs. Banner... they scream because of my face.”

Betty Banner: “Hunh. I’ve seen worse.”

She directs him to the site of the first gamma bomb test, in New Mexico.

Meanwhile, the Leader’s not-so-secret city of Freehold beneath the Columbia Ice Fields in Alberta, Canada. And Rick Jones. The Leader promised that he would bring Rick’s dead girlfriend Marlo back to life and since one of his flunkies is the deceased General Thunderbolt Ross, his words have some weight. Rick is at least hearing him out.

He would have probably run otherwise because this sure is a location that the Leader is running. Its kind of like a survivalist commune. The Leader is convinced or at least has convinced others that he’s playing the long game instead of trying to take over the world.

He’s going to wait for mankind to wipe itself out and then the descendants of Freehold will build a better world.

As the Leader argues: “Who in their right mind would want to rule the world now, Rick Jones? The world is a mess. Why should I come in and clean up humanity’s mistakes? No, let humanity choke on the bile of its own creation. True men of vision care about the long term.”

But elsewhere, Hydra plans to raid Freehold. When questioned, the Supreme Hydra explains his reasoning in two parts. Part one: Hydra has lacked a true science division since AIM split off. So they’ll just go and steal the Leader’s research and personnel. And part second: He shoots the person who asked him. Don’t question the Supreme Hydra.

Elsewhere elsewhere, Betty finds Hulk sulking at the site of the first gamma bomb.

Hulk: “Oh, that’s rich. That’s beautiful. You need me. The Pantheon needs me. The Avengers need me. Everyone needs and wants and takes and takes... When do I get something back, huh? When? I’ve been patient with you! I’ve been understanding! I’ve been everything! Where were you when I needed you, huh? You shut me out, turned me away! And now you announce you need me, with this Pantheon goon at your side. Everyone is always leeching off me and taking from me, and it’s never a two-way street! Nobody gives a flip about me other than when they need someone to save their butt. You don’t care, Marlo doesn’t care, Rick doesn’t--.”

And then Betty slaps him (and immediately clutches her hand because ow) and tells Hulk that Marlo is deeeeeeeeeeead. Some crazy woman claiming to be Rick’s mother killed Marlo. Marlo is dead, Rick has vanished and Hulk hates Betty.

He says he could never hate her and then they kiss.

Elsewhere back at Freehold, Rick examines the zombie Thunderbolt Ross. Except he’s not really a zombie.

When Ross died at Gamma Base, the Leader stole his body. Just because. But also because to test his revivification machinery on. The same revivification machinery he hopes to use to save Marlo.

Rick doesn’t want Marlo back if she’s going to be zombie-esque like Ross. But Leader explains that he’s been branching out into the study of auras lately. No, really.

And to demonstrate he turns off the lights. Both Rick and the Leader glow but Ross does not. Whatever force that the aura represents could be described as the soul. And the Leader believes that this ‘soul’ doesn’t immediately dissipate on death.

With his revivification technology at the time, he could revive Ross’ body but not his kirlian aura.

But Freehold is populated by scientists and thinkers yes but also radiation victims and gamma mutates. Including the five survivors of Middletown, Arizona which the Leader destroyed with a gamma bomb. And these five survivors include the preacher Father Jason McCall, alias Soul Man. With Soul Man’s powers and the revivification machinery, Marlo could be revived as she was.

Think about it, Rick.

Meanwhile and elsewhere, Hulk and Betty investigate Rick’s apartment. They find a message from Cap that says that Rick has been questioning the Fantastic Four and Hank Pym. To see what these brilliant men could do for Marlo, Hulk guesses. Betty thinks its pretty crazy that science could bring back a dead woman but Hulk counters that they live in a comic book universe where gamma radiation turned a scrawny scientist into a half ton of hostility.

So she decides to raid Rick’s fridge but Agamemnon’s head is in the freezer. No, he’s not dead. Just sort of hiding in the fridge to talk to Betty. Betty tells Hulk to make him stop doing that. She’s going to end up afraid to use the shower or toilet at this rate.

Hulk is still angry at Agamemnon for making promises to the Leader but Agamemnon reveals he lied to the Leader. No harm in making promises you don’t intend to keep. And in fact, he’ll tell Hulk exactly where the Leader is so they can put an end to the long and bitter enmity they have going on.

Hulk is thrilled. But Betty says he doesn’t have to do this. He can call in SHIELD or the Avengers. Nope. This Is Something He Has To Do Himself. Or a “guy” thing as Betty dismissively describes it. But she gives him a kiss and her blessing.

Meanwhile in Freehold, Rick Jones agrees to work with the Leader to have Marlo revived.

So as Leader’s people set up the giant Marlo crystal into the revivification machine, the Leader explains the concept of ‘deus ex machina’ to Rick Jones. Which also happens to be the title of this issue. And what Leader has named his revivification machine.

Then Hydra attacks and cuts easily through the first line of defense, the Humanoids.

Then Agamemnon shows up and vaguely promises that help is on the way. Except he means the Hulk.

And he busts in through the ceiling of Freehold interrupting some Hydra goons using some Freeholders as target practice. But once one of the citizens tells him where the Leader is, he stalks off in that direction. Ignoring the dying Lou saying “God helps them who help themselves.”

And he casually fights his way through more Hydra goons. Yelling that whatever demented experiment the Leader is up to, the Hulk is going to tear it down around his murdering ears.

Rick Jones tries to stop the Hulk, explaining that the Leader is going to resurrect Marlo but Hulk dismisses Rick as a distraught nut. And then some more Hydra shows up with a tank.

Meanwhile, the procedure or the ritual. Its a little of both because Soul Man is heavily religious and beseeches god for divine intervention. But the Leader’s real game plan is revealed as his second-in-command Omnibus has set up instruments to analyze Soul Man’s powers. Despite Soul Man’s belief that his powers come from god, they really spring from himself. And Leader is going to siphon off Soul Man’s power and use them to become immortal and invincible.

And then Hulk beats up some Hydra goons while ranting that the Leader always uses him to come out on top. And now that Hulk isn’t a mindless brute or the square peg round hole situation of Banner’s mind trying to control the Hulk’s body, it really pisses Hulk off that Leader is still playing him like a fiddle.

And the ritual/procedure is looking quite magical now with swirling lights and the whole center with Soul Man and crystalized Marlo glowing. And then Hulk punches into the scene.

He charges and tackles Leader. And when Zombie Ross in the Redeemer armor opens fire (which hurts but does not significantly inconvenience Hulk) Hulk grabs Leader and uses him as a human shield.

Probably because Leader swore he would kill Hulk for this interruption.

Things having gone a little FUBAR, Rick Jones pulls Marlo out of the crystal cocoon. Only to find that she’s alive but as catatonic as Zombie Ross. And Hulk smashes open the Redeemer armor to reveal Ross, which Hulk angrily decries as another of Leader’s tricks.

The mortally wounded Leader tries to get into the crystal chamber (I guess some manner of healing pod or suspended animation thing or something) but Hulk throws Redeemer Ross at the crystal and everything explodes.

Hulk pulls himself out of the rubble and calms down a little, realizing that the man in the Redeemer suit really was Ross. So Leader really could bring people back to life. Hulk finds Ross but the revived zombie man is now re-deaded.

He also finds Soul Man, still barely alive. The man is babbling about understanding everything now and that the place he’s going (presumably heaven) is so beautiful. He then wishes pax vobiscum (’peace be with you’) to Hulk, kisses him on the forehead and dies.

Leaving Hulk with the dead Soul Man and Rick Jones with the catatonic revived Marlo to simultaneously wonder “Dear god... what have I done?”

Pretty good. Pretty long. But its the 400th issue.

It also includes some Hulk pin-ups and a reprint of the first appearance of the Leader. Where Hulk thwarts Leader’s attempt to steal a nuclear device from a train but Bruce Banner ends up arrested for the theft because he’s left besides the missing device when all is said and done.

Why I hate Batgirl

Okay so this is talking about Barbara Gordon. Not really her more the idea of her...if that makes sense? This is not up for debate either. I may come to like her later but screaming your views of her is not going to change my mind. Half of the reason I don’t like her is because of her fan base. If you like her and want to hear why I don’t, keep reading. Mind that since I DON”T like the character I do not read her comics. What I know is from what I have read or heard about in some cases. 

So 1 She’s not the first. Let’s get this out of the way. Yes, Barbara is not the first batgirl or the first female partner to the batman. That goes to Batwoman. Ms. Kane had a niece Betty Kane who was the first batgirl. She was added to prove Bruce and Dick weren’t gay for each other.  Katherine Kane is gay, so this is funny to me. My point, she’s not the first. That gone we can move on.

She started off as Bruce’s love interest. As she was 25 or so and taught HERSELF how to fight after a run in with Bruce and the Batman. She took it on for fun as her life was boring. 

1 She was using Bruce’s love of rare books so she could keep him close. It makes her seem selfish, as she doesn’t care for HIS welfare only her fun. 

2 I have a hard time here. This is later re-written as her being 18 to robin’s 15 but this needs to be stated. PICK A DAMN AGE. Now she’s 21 maybe? But it ticks my off. When she became Oracle I believed her to be will in her mid 20′s. Even if you count her as being batgirl for 1 year (if she was 18 when she started) She couldn’t have been in the wheelchair for that long as she NOW got back surgery to walk again. I got off track but the age is a factor. 

3 This means she has no real reason to be here. The other batgirls have had hard lives as did all of the robins. She can and has left. She’s not a want to be cop but daddy won’t let her. She’s bored... Or she wants to help people?! you say. No bored. There are many ways to be a hero kids. Dick was a cop and Bruce does open charity work. This is in Dick and others too. But Bruce is shown to be the only person to really handle joker them/ doesn’t like doing it, but feels he most. And Dick was also a cop/spy clearly he likes doing it but also feels he can work with the police and government....Babs? bored. As her father is proof of how she can help within the law.

 Robin had a crush on her but this was not how they started in the comics. They did date and broke up (2000-2004) but DC started on this high-school lovers thing.  Dick’s long time girlfriend was Starfire from the teen titans.... I’m not going to talk about my love for DicKori. But DC treats the pairing poorly to show favor on Dick x Babs. Dick was written to have cheated on Kori with babs making the Dick/Babs pairing extra awful in my book. It’s not romantic. It’s mean spirited. This wasn’t building up it’s newly added.

DC wanted Dick back with Batman and used BG to do it. Adding things were Bruce and Babs talk about him dating Kori and “it not lasting”..... I could talk about this but maybe later the age rant wasn’t needed but it does bug me. She’s written as jealous.... and unwilling to fight for Dick. Babs goes to see Dick but is met with Kori, she runs off and tells Dick later about it.... *sigh* I feel like this is gas-lighting in a way. He’s dating you now, you do NOT need to talk about his ex. Babs does something like this again with Helena (Huntress) when she finds out they (Dick and Helena) had a one night stand six years before they started dating..... She slut shames her (This is in no man’s land) and gets Black Canary to do it too by lying to her. This romance is making her look bad. She lies again to Helena and at this point I’m like “yeah fuck you”. She breaks up with Dick, and some time before? (Oracle when they dated, Batgirl when she says this) tells him to look for someone else... Why not Kori? She helped him through a lot of his issues when they dated....FOR 10 FUCKING YEARS!!! 

The Killing Joke... This is a one shot that was so well loved it become canon. In this she gets shot....I’m not going to lie, I’m numb to this. It’s not sexist that she was shot. The point to the book was to show how 1 bad day can change your life for the worse and staying sane is a lie. Jason was BEATEN TO DEATH. DICK WAS ALSO SHOT BY THE JOKER! No one goes on about gender politics with them. Joker didn’t rape babs either. Alan Moore, the writer has stated this many times. You know who was raped? Dick was raped twice, Jason was stated may have as a child, Tim almost got raped, Bruce was raped and got Damian from it and deadpool but that’s marvel. Never happened to Babs. After this she gets PTSD which many of her fans use when she’s badly written. All of the batfamily should have PTSD in some way. Hell Bruce. The death of his parents left him a such a state that he can’t have real relationships with people, plays mind games with family/friends that could be abusive if you really think about it. And can not live past it or find happiness. This is in no way to make light of people who have gone through this. Any of these things. If you like Babs and find strength in her. I’m happy for you and glad something good came from this. But this does not give her a free pass. It takes away her agency for HER actions. She lied, she was controlling, and selfish. She hurt others people and NEVER said she was sorry for it. (I’m talking about her, Kori and Helena) Dick tried to help her and she pushed him away even when he was hurting. (Dick has gone through a lot) Just because something bad happened to you, it does not give you the right to hurt other. Helena didn’t like being lied on, to and treated the way barbara treated her. 

Even when she’s out of comics EI the cartoons she’s pretty damn awful and in everything. 

People need to let the PTSD thing go. As a character you like? shouldn’t have to live with it forever. There are so many character who have gone though worse. Cassie, Steph, Tim, JASON!!! Dick. Bruce.  They all should have it. But there is so little to her character that people treat it like it’s the only thing. Starfire was a freaking slave who watched her parents die, her sister tried to kill her AND was so upset by the death of her friend and break up with Dick, she left the planet... Tim lost his dad, Bruce and Conner. And let Jason loose to go on a murder spree. All of their lives sucks. All of them her gone through hell. No one pats them on the back.... Shiro from Voltron, Sasuke Uchiha, Katnis.... all characters with PTSD. I don’t hate it in fiction. I hate it being handle poorly or over and over again. OR it becoming the only thing to a character. I’m going in circles.

What I have read/seen doesn’t make me what to read/watch more. These are some of the things she has done and everytime I think of her I go back to some of these things. Dick was wrong for cheating on Kori, Babs knew. I’m not sticking behind “girl power” if she can’t even respect another woman/women... 

It’s the unfair treatment of other characters and way her fan base treat her. Batwoman needs more love and respect. “I’m too smart for grayson” Fuck you, babs~

I used to really dislike this pairing because I didn’t see how the characters would fit together as a romantic pairing.  I still don’t, but I have more of an appreciation for it now, as shipping Thor with Darcy frees up Jane to be shipped with my favorite person, Literally Anyone Else.  It’s a beautiful thing. :D

Vision/Wanda

I wouldn’t call this something I actively ship, but it was cute enough in Civil War.  I still haven’t seen AoU, so I don’t really know how this ship was first set up.  Vision trying to comfort Wanda in CW was nice, and it’s kind of sad that she had to attack him like that to escape.  I’d like to see where they go with this, but for now, I can only call my feelings for it a casual appreciation.

Bucky/Natasha

BuckyNat for me falls under the same category as Tasertricks: I get why someone would ship it, but it doesn’t work for me.  I just don’t see it working in the MCU.  I know it’s a thing in the comics, and I’m sure they’re a great couple there.  The movies are not the comics, though, and in the movies, I don’t think they could have more than a tentative acquaintanceship at this point.  

Plus… I’m just really crazy about Bucky/Jane right now.  Oh my always delightful crackships! :D

Tony/Bucky

Bruce/Jane

I have read a little Bruce/Jane in the past, and it was pretty good.  I do think there would be a lot of understanding between them.  Both scientists, both ostracized for one reason or another.  I don’t think Jane would be too scare of the Hulk either.  If she can attempt to protect Thor with her tiny mortal body twice, I think she could handle that.

Another spotlight of the 12 months was when Isabell invited me to contribute a 5cm x 5cm drawing for her Magical Advant Calendar. Since I draw coloring playing cards for the Creative Scrapbookers Magazine month-to-month, I shortly mentioned sure. Susan Carlson made these four present tags free for her Facebook Community Group members this Christmas. They are so pretty and I had the perfect time coloring them. New Books
