If Elain rejects her bond with Lucien, then Azriel needs to reject his bond with his mate because otherwise Elain will always be left wondering if he will abandon her when his real mate comes. But for Azriel to break his bond with his mate, he will have to find her first. And then grapple with whether he loves her or Elain, because the number one thing that he longs for CANONICALLY is a mating bond. But before that he has to fall in love with Elain and actually think of her beyond just thoughts of pleasuring himself.

So for Elriel to happen: Azriel has to find his mate *cough Gwyn cough*, fall in love with Elain and break his bond with his mate while Elain has to confront Lucien, come to terms with what Azriel does as the NC's spymaster (*cough torture cough*) and the fact that he wants to kill Lucien in a blood duel and also break her mating bond. So, uh... Is this even an Elriel story when they're spending most of the story figuring out their feelings for their mates??

And while all this is happening they will also have to deal with the plot (Illyrian/Dusk Court/Koschei etc). Like, "they" as in the four of them (Azriel, Elain, Lucien and Azriel's mate (prob Gwyn))?? Because each couple needs to break their mating bond for Elriel to happen.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that if Elriel happens, the last book will have to follow some mysterious unknown couple that no one cares to read about (Mor x Emerie is an option but I don't think SJM will write a full-length sapphic novel yet, though I can see them getting the novella).

I'm a Gwynriel and Elucien because I love them and because it's simply less headache-inducing to ship them. I mean we have two books left, one confirmed mate couple and another potential mate couple and SJM is a fated mates writer where all her main couples are mates.

an angle i enjoy in cosmic/eldritch horror is when, instead resorting to the old classic "the horrors being so incomprehensible that they break your brain and drive you mad" cliché, the premise is that in comprehending the horrors you are so changed by the experience that your new state is indistinguishable to an outside observer from madness. you comprehend the unknowable just fine, but actually communicating that to anyone else is impossible because they just don't have the mental framework required to understand it. the eldritch horrors don't drive you mad. what does is the ordinary everyday horror of finding yourself isolated, ridiculed and doubted at every turn, no matter how hard you try to make yourself heard and understood.

Do you guys notice how when Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers union, started planning a general strike, he did it by a) targeting his messaging towards unions with the ability to safely and effectively strike in large numbers, b) laid out a clear, actionable plan for those unions to follow (setting contracts to all expire at the same time, since many unions cannot strike while under contract), c) is using union contracts to set clear, actionable demands that can be met in order to gauge success and provide an end goal, and d) started organizing FOUR YEARS before the proposed strike date to give people the chance to plan accordingly, because it takes a really freaking long time to get tens of millions of people organized?

You notice how he didn't do it by slapping a message on Twitter saying 'hey nobody go to work on Monday, that'll really show 'em'?

someone probably said this already but in spiderverse i think it's interesting how when pavitr was first introduced everyone thought something bad was gonna happen to him bc of how confident and optimistic he was. and then in the actual movie we see that something bad was supposed to happen to him (police chief dying!) but it doesn't! miles stops it! and miguel berates miles for this, says it's going to cause the universe to collapse or whatever.

there's this idea that tragedy is inherent to spidermans growth, and while it's true that some spiderpeople learn important lessons through loss, no one stops to ask, is it really necessary? yeah, maybe the chief was supposed to die. but why does spiderman have to be formed through tragedy? why do we (as heroes) have to let people die? pavitr didn't lose anyone, and he's still a good spiderman! maybe, if he doesn't suffer, he'll end up better off for it!

so while miguel is arguing for all this big picture stuff about saving the multiverse he's lost sight of what it really means to be a spiderman, he's not looking out for the real individual people. yeah it's just one person who would die, but that one person means something to someone. shrugging and saying "stuff just sucks sometimes, we can't do anything about it" is the opposite of what superheroes do. pretty obviously, miles arc is also a reflection of the struggles people face in real life, working within unequal systems, where it's easy to shrug and say "that's just the way it is" and not ask "but why does it need be this way? can't we do something about it?"

miguel is arguing that you can't have your cake and eat it too. presumably, miles and co. are going to find a way to get around that and change things for the better (and maybe that's why miles has that line about two cakes in the advisors office!)
