simon doesn't pursue people, he operates more like a one-man strike team. his approach to human connection is transactional, pragmatic, a matter of logistics.
on the rare occasion he's looking for company, he wants someone easy, who won't fuss when he introduces them to a thin motel mattress. won't ask what he does for work or try to make plans for the morning. won't bother him about 'next time'. nothing long-term. no strings.
he doesn't have a 'type' so much as a protocol: pick someone malleable, pliant, and preferably on the pill.
then you start working at his local.
the first time he sees you, he doesn't notice much beyond the basics: efficiency, attentiveness, pouring pints and bantering with the regulars with aplomb. by the second or third time, he's paying closer attention. you're not just good at your job—you're quick, always three steps ahead of the chaos. you give out smiles left and right, but it's more muscle memory than genuine warmth. and you're clever, too. funny, even, when someone manages to earn your attention for longer than a transaction.
you could probably keep up with his humor. go toe-to-toe.
you're off-limits, though. that's the rule. bartenders are switzerland—neutral territory. don't shit where you eat. it's a system that works, so long as he doesn't let himself think too much about the view when you lean over the counter or the lilt of your voice when you ask what he's having tonight.
then one evening, you take another man's number. some leering idiot, too comfortable with inserting himself into your space, grinning like he's cracked your code because you haven't humbled him. simon doesn't react, not outwardly. he nurses his drink and watches as you smile, slip the napkin into your pocket, and turn back to the bar.
but that's when you become a problem.
he tells himself it doesn't matter, that it's nothing. he doesn't want a number or a date. but the thought of someone else having you—someone who doesn't know what to do with a woman like you—it's a splinter buried just deep enough to keep him thinking about it. irritating, prone to fester.
how to approach you, though? he can't be as direct as he'd like, can't pin you down with a look or crass words. no way to corner you when you're safe behind the counter, or disappearing through a staff door. hanging around until you're off would be pathetic. dog behavior, he thinks, with a twinge of contempt for the mental image. he's got too much self-respect for that, at least.
no, he's got to actually make an effort. use his words.
the next time he comes in, he waits. no more corner tables or watching from afar. he sits close, pretends not to notice how your hands look slicing a lime. he orders his usual and tries not to overthink your tone when you set it down in front of him.
"you alright?"
you reach for his card, fingers pinching the plastic, but he holds on, smirking when you tug and then huff.
this is the moment. his moment. the one he's been building toward in his head for days. but there's a hitch, a blip in his usual confidence, and he fumbles. he blames your perfume.
"so…you come here often?"
not what he meant to say, but not the worst.
the shockwave of his nuclear-level failure doesn't register until your lips twitch, and it finally sinks in. his eyes widen a fraction as the realization lands. oh, he's fucked it. all his rehearsing, for nothing.
"…yeah," you say, voice flat, a single brow raised as you gesture vaguely toward the bar around you. "i work here?"
his mouth dries, but his face doesn't change. he doesn't fight it when you pull the card out of his grasp. there's the barest glint of something in your eyes—amusement, maybe, or pity. he's not sure which is worse.
you turn away to ring him up, but when you glance back, he's gone.

this whole thing is annoying the actual fuck out of me so let’s actually talk about it
not saying one is much better than the other, but the comparisons are annoying ASF and if i was petty enough i’d pull the NATTY card, but that’s silly
caitlin’s WNBA debut game was may 14th against connecticut where she played 32 minutes and did score 20 points and 3 assists, yes. but ALSO set a record for the most turnovers in a WNBA debut with 10 turnovers. they lost the game 92–71. by 21 points. as a developed team.
paige had 10 points, lead in rebounds with 7, 2 assists and 1 block. only 2 turnovers the entire game. played 29 minutes. whistle wasn’t pretty, but i’m sure that’s something they loveee to ignore. they lost 99-84. by 15 points. as a new team, with only 3 old players on the roster and a whole new coaching staff. they played against minnesota.. a team that lost the 2024 championship by 5 points only.
so there’s your fucking wnba regular season debut comparison. not much of a fucking difference.
but if you wanna compare FURTHER, which is so dumb because cc and paige don’t play alike—we can do that.
CC
strengths:
• great shooter, especially from deep
• great at creating her own shot and pulling defenders out.
• very flashy passer with high court vision.
• can change the momentum of a game with quick scoring runs.
weaknesses:
• is turnover prone ( she tries a lot of stupid high risk passes).
• her defense is a work in progress to say the LEAST. not always consistent or physical on that end.
• heavily ball dominant. she thrives best when the offense is built around her just like in college
bottom line: She's a high volume offensive weapon, gets compared to steph for her range. BUT she still needs to improve a lot in terms of decision making and defense
PB
strengths:
• very smart decision maker. rarely forces shots.
• clutch in late game situations.
• strong on both ends of the court. offense AND defense.
• can shoot, drive, facilitate, defend, and rebound. definition of all around player.
weaknesses:
• injuries have definitely slowed her momentum and exposure compared to cc.
• less flashy than caitlin
• might not be as dominant from three point range.
• passes the ball a lot
bottom line: paige is more of a complete guard. efficient, tactical, and quietly deadly. she’s the type of player that can slot into any system and make it better. can also play different positions and HAS done so successfully.
if you want a high scoring player who draws in fans and stretches defenses, go with cc.
if you want a balanced, winning guard who can run the floor, score, and lock in defensively, paige is your girl.
right now cc has the louder game but paige has the quieter dominance. and that might be more sustainable longterm.
one is a flashy shooter, and one is a do it all guard.

Hi kabrunator3000 whats your favorite kabru
That’s a good question! I’m really bad at making choices, but, out of the ones I’ve posted, these are probably my top 10! They’re not in any particular order, I just tried to make the images fit together nicely. I only put brief descriptions in the alt descriptions since I’ve already described them before. The posts they come from are also provided in the alt descriptions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The reasons for why I picked these is under a cut so that the post didn’t end up excessively long!
For the first one, I’m a big fan of cute style Kabru! There were a couple I could pick from, but I think this one was the cutest! I like his pose and expression! I like the card style too!
For the second one, I think Kabru’s wink is pretty iconic! I decided to go with this one since it has an older design of Kabru and I think Kabru’s older design doesn’t get enough love.
For the third one, I’m a big fan of Kabru’s genderbent adventurer design! I like his other genderbent design too, but I think this one has more charm to it! I think it’s interesting that even though this version looks more like his usual design, it still has some major changes! I like her big sleeves, gloves, and boots! She looks really pretty!
For the fourth one, I thought this situation was pretty funny! I think it’s also interesting to see how Kabru manages himself when he’s not in the dungeon.
For the fifth one, I thought this was pretty funny as well! Kabru is often prone to sweating, and I think this is the most he ever sweats at a time! He also has a really goofy expression!
For the sixth one, I just thought it was sweet! It seems like Kabru is having fun dancing and I like his blue outfit!
For the seventh one, I just liked the way his face looked here.
For the eight one, I like the colors! I also like the situation he’s in here! It’s nice to think he goes out to eat with friends and gets to drink some tasty tea.
For the ninth one, I like how happy he looks here! I really like his smile! I also like how he’s having a nice time hanging out with some friends here too!
For the tenth one, I’m a huge fan of how this scene got animated! Kabru’s attacks look incredible in motion! This scene not only looks incredible in terms of animation, but also in terms of how impressive Kabru is when it comes to human combat! If you look carefully, he kills the first Corpse Retriever with the trident, and instead of pulling it out to deal with the other two, he realizes it would be more efficient to use a knife. Instead of finding one of his own, he quickly spots and unsheathes the dead Corpse Retriever’s knife to use for himself. He not only gets the idea to utilize it, but he’s a super quick thinker and cleverly flips it around in the air to switch it to his dominant hand. He slices the throat of the second Corpse Retriever in one swift motion, and then stabs the third one in the gut, freeing his hands again since he doesn’t need it anymore. He then watches them fall over, knowing he fatally wounded them. This all happened within a few seconds! I’m just quite amazed with Kabru’s swift and efficient movements as well as his quick and clever thinking!
I didn’t tag this with the main tags because this is an ask and not technically a new post. Also, I think I have another ask in my inbox, but I can’t see it. If that’s your ask, maybe try sending it again?
Thank you so much for asking!

So I just had this Idea
Malleus, Idia and Che’nya fighting all out.
Ok, before anyone starts glazing on Malleus and saying he’d win: Put who their twisted from into perspective:
Maleficent was the most powerful fae.
Hades is a god. One of the big 3, to be precise.
The Cheshire Cat is canonically the second most powerful being in wonderland, second to only the literal human form of time.
They are all God Tier in their respective lore.
Most people know the other two’s abilities, but incase you may not know :
Cheshire Cats Abilities, include:
Shapeshifting and Vocal/Visual/Physical Manipulation, Invisibility, Long Range Image Projection, Long Distance Teleportation, Flight, Gravity Manipulation on self, Minor Reality Manipulation, Portal creation, Walking through walls, Body and Limb controlled detachment, etc.
Hades abilities include:
General God Abilities, Raising the Dead, Smoke control, access to cursed objects, high heat tolerance, physical size manipulation, pretty much alot of shit, more then I can name since, y’know, god.
Maleficents abilities include:
Plant, Flame, Weather and Lightning manipulation, secondary form (Dragon), fatal long term curses, long distance teleportation, animal communication, long distance location monitoring, flight, eternally serving cunt, etc.
Now, obviously, their twisted versions are different, so what are the twisted versions KNOWN capabilities?
Mal’s strong suit seems to be mostly nature based abilities, Lightning, Fire, Briars, etc and Sleepy time shenanigans. However, he is also capable of turning into a Dragon, which gives him a huge physical buff, but makes him much easier to hit. All fae share the same fatal weakness of Anti-Magic, as Magic is canonically their life source. Thats Idias forte. Che’nya also has a mindset and skillset similar to Lilias, minus the experience and training. He also has rapid fire teleportation and invisibility, plus cat senses, making him extremely hard to strike with lightning.
Out of these 3 however, Malleus definitely has the most durability and Defense.
Idias strong suit is tech, which Mal is most definitely unfamiliar with, but also has access to extremely high tier ANTI MAGIC. Che’nya stands at an advantage of being able to go invisible, teleport, and likely having more creative and efficient methods of blocking vital sensors or heat signatures, but I unfortunately doubt Mal would think of that. Briar Valley is EXTREMELY low tech. Mal does have the intimidation factor on Idia, but if this situation somehow involves Ortho’s safety, that goes straight out the window, as seen in Book 7. We also nearly never see Idia use magic, so we don’t exactly have a good handle of what he’s capable of in that regard.
Unfortunately, Idia is a glass cannon due to his low physical abilities and stamina, leaving him likely needing a heavy defense system to not get tossed.
Che’nya is truly the wild card in this scenario, since unlike the other two, unless they bothered Trey or Riddle for information, the other two don’t know much about his abilities. Like Malleus, considering what we know (I wrote it somewhere on tumblr), he has extreme magical stamina and produces jack shit in blot (no magestone can be seen on his design too) while doing crazy ass shit, and as shown in the manga, since he was a kid too. Comparing that to Roros brother, and the bullshit Che’nya was pulling as a kid while still being alive, he’s most definitely some flavor of overpowered.
Given what we’ve seen and heard about him across the manga and game, this is a portion of what we can assume is in his skillset:
Rapid fire (and long distance) teleportation, Long term Invisibility, flexibility, flight, Gravity Manipulation (making himself near weightless without floating off into oblivion) Cat like senses, Limb and Body part controlled detachment, the ability to slip past NRC’s barrier like its an average Tuesday. The barrier that took several high powered shots from STYX to break. With little to no repercussions from what we’ve seen.
He’s also (likely) a creative and unpredictable fighter. I think mentioned/said somewhere by Riddle or someone else that they doesn’t believe invisibility is Chens UM.
Riddle, I love you babes, you were my first fully spell maxed card, but NO FUCKING SHIT DUDE.
Idias advantage is deadass: Cat knowledge. Is using partially genetic traits a low blow? Yea, but again, this is an All out 1v1 fight. Obviously not laser pointers or basic shit, but things like Sound Pitches. Theres also Heat Sensors and things like that to combat invisibility, but those can also be thwarted.
Mals advantage is experience with Lilia in terms of matching high speeds, and combating against tricks and sneak attacks, Dragon senses + his Defensive capabilities. However, as a more straight forward person, Mal may not think of the more creative strategies Chen (or Idia) may come up with. Even if he traps Chens leg or something in Briar, he could just pop his leg off and keep moving.
Che’nya is more of a high speed self sufficient DPS but with the right weakness targeting he could be taken down.
I didn’t put Leona or Lilia on here because Lilia… Lets be real : Lilia would most definitely whoop all of their asses unless he gets hit with Anti Magic too many times.
The other is I’m sorry Leona, you’re a total badass and an amazing fighter, but you might be a tad out of league on alot of mostly circumstantial situations.
Starting off : Che’nya : He’s also a Cat, and nobody knows your genetic weaknesses like your own kind, plus Sand Blinding is great until bro disappears too.
Considering Leona is a pretty kickass fighter and strategist, plus can actually somewhat hold his own against Malleus, it’s going to be a decently tough fight, but in the end, I think Che’nya might secure the win sheerly due to being able to overcome Leonas UM in a few ways, even from a point blank standpoint.
A limb being turned to sand? Detach that shit, can’t spread further if it’s not attached anymore. He could also fly upwards out of the sandstorm but that ain’t as fun.
I’m just imagining Leona whipping up a sandstorm and going in to ambush Che’nya only for that mf to be GONE. (He’s right behind him bout to FNAF jumpscare this)
Theres a slim chance he may also lose to Idia sheerly because if its an all out scenario (i’m being nice and giving them all whatever requirements if they need it for atleast one use of their UM so its fair) , Idia can quite literally open the gates to hell and unlike the other two, Leona cannot fly without a broom, so uh, enjoy the drop?
Without that though, I do actually fully believe Leona might win, but with an Anti Magic nerf possibility on the field, its not exactly set in stone.
I don’t think I need to explain Malleus. So therefore I won’t.
Again, this is mostly just my thoughts, nothing is canon here, just me wondering about the possibilities! If theres any information that I missed let me know :D
(Leona fans please don’t hurt me I don’t hate him I promise I’m just going of logic from what I know.)

Hello I would love to know if I have any Gods/Goddesses of death/rebirth watching over me and guiding me?
NAME N.V.W.
Age 34
Fave Color Red
COUNTRY USA/PACIFIC NORTHWEST.
Thank you!
Hey!! I hope you’re having a great night, it’s difficult to read for yes/no answers, my pendulum answered yes to this a blatant question, I’m going to use tarot card to expand on the identity of the entity. The first three cards I pull will tell me about its self in nature, the fourth will identify a perceived gender, the fifth will address its appearance, then from there I’ll go on vision and intuition.
First I pulled the three of pentacles, the king of pentacles, and the sword. This entity is highly efficient, well balanced, and a jack of all trades yet a master of all, if that makes sense. They are highly skilled, and put those skills to use on a regular basis. This entity can help you in terms of business and is a lover of life and all its treasures. They always prefer a feast to a humble meal. Working with them requires you to be respectful and attentive, they are generous, but will not be taken advantage of. They’re big on offerings and even, fair exchange of energy, the more you’re willing give the more you get. They can take you to untold heights, but if you break their trust you will be crushed, if you promise something you better mean it. Use common sense, stay humble, and remember your limitations and you will be fine. You must surrender fully to their energy, as they are a being that rules over surrender.
For gender I pulled the nine of swords which depicts a male character and lets us know that this being serves an important role it maintaining order within their pantheon or community.
For appearance I pulled the three of wands that depicts a well dressed gentleman with a cane. I’m going to pull three charms to expand on appearance, the charms I pulled tell me he has a very gentle energy and appearance, almost delicate. Very graceful with his movements.
In summary
•This entity is masterful, precise, and earth-dominant but sharpened by air/intellect.
•They are associated with skill, refined judgment, and the right use of power.
•They work in contracts, business, oaths, offerings, and spiritual pacts.
•The male figure here isn’t just masculine, he’s burdened with sacred responsibility, likely within a divine court or infernal pantheon.
•Suggests deep awareness of suffering, grief, and the psychospiritual pain of humanity.
•Dignified, calm, elevated. This is a being who moves with purpose, who sees far, and who has refined tastes.
•“Well dressed with a cane” is important, a symbol of rulership, age, and control.
My best guess is Osiris, based on the reading and a strong feeling. Osiris is the god of death, resurrection, and judgement. He is well dressed and kingly, graceful yet commanding. He was betrayed and dismembered, later resurrected, hence themes of trust and consequences.
I hope this reading helps!

Can I ask you what type of elemental magic the boys use? I know that Ace is wind magic, Riddle is fire magic, Kalim and Silver and Rook is light magic but what about others?
Tumblr media
While some characters do demonstrate using certain elemental magic spells (ie Ace using wind magic in the prologue), an individual is not limited to just one kind. If we’re considering both cards and main story canon as viable proof, one clear example of this is Kalim; his Dorm Uniform card has cosmic/water magic. (All previous Dorm Uniform cards were mono-element.) Then, in the main story itself, Kalim describes his UM as allowing him to produce a lot of water using only a little bit of magic. That implies relativity, meaning that other mages are able to use water magic too (just less efficiently than his specialized spell can). Kalim isn’t shown to use light magic prominently in the main story; the “light” being referred to in the ask most likely refers to his cosmic spells which are only seen in his card animations.
On that note, all characters have cards with a variety of elemental combinations, a lot of which are not fire/fire, water/water, flora/flora, or cosmic/cosmic. There are also plenty of what is traditionally thought of as “elemental” magic to the players that is not accounted for in those 4 (Ace’s wind magic isn’t accounted for, nor the magic that electrifies the golden contracts). Additionally, while cosmic magic is “dark” for most of the cast and “light” for Kalim, Silver, and Rook, it doesn’t bar the others from using light magic to, say, light the way in a dark area or something.
Elemental magic isn’t like unique magic where a mage is only capable of pulling off one kind of elemental magic out of all of them. Perhaps someone would be more inclined to one element over another (is that maybe what you were asking about?), whether that’s personal preference or innate skill (ie Grim is a fire monster creature so fire magic is easier for him to belch up, Riddle often uses fire especially when he gets mad), but this has rarely ever been pointed out in the dialogue. For example, the main story and vignettes don’t seem to distinguish Kalim/Rook/Silver’s cosmic magic as being “light” (or more “light prone”) from everyone else’s “dark”. It’s only noticeable to us in a cosmetic sense when we watch them in battle. Nor is it really said that people struggle with certain elements or even elemental magic “opposite” theirs.
It’s kind of arbitrary to assign characters a single element and, in some instances, doesn’t make sense in terms of power scaling and world building. Would a top-of-the-class student like Riddle or Azul (or Malleus, one of the top 5 mages in the world) really only be capable of fire or water magic, respectively?? Would an elite magic school like NRC really only have its students learn a single type of elemental magic and stop there? So… assigning one element to each character isn’t really possible. I would just assume they can use all elemental magic (although not all to the same level of proficiency) unless otherwise stated.

Thank you for doing this ask game! My initials are GPW and rising sign is Gemini -
Go to pick up song for rn is “The Giver” by Chappell Roan
One habit that is currently blocking my goals, as silly as it is, is being easily distracted by media like YouTube or video games when I truly want to be reading or writing or job searching - I’ve been doing my best (and been doing better recently) with putting the distractions down and focusing on the better things I want to do
Again I really appreciate you for taking the time to do this! 💙
Tumblr media
Hi G P W ,
Thank you so much for participating in my new ask game.
I haven't heard this song yet, so thank you for recommending a piece of new music to listen to!! Also, don't call it silly, dear, because we're on the same boat with doom scrolling~
So it would seem we both need to learn to be more disciplined and self-motivated to love ourselves enough to want to always put our priorities first for the sake of our future success.
Tumblr media
Here are the following cards pulled for your reading:
Sun, 4 of Wands, Death
Tumblr media
Okay, so for the first card, you are asked to learn to be genuinely happy for the progress you've made thus far. It may seem like you're not the type to enjoy the little wins whenever you finish a part of your project/goal/tasks. For you, you might think that you have to suffer through finishing the whole project before you let yourself relax, let alone enjoy the process.
That's actually the main advice from the first card that's screaming in my head: Enjoy the process as you work diligently to achieve your goals this second quarter.
You are urged not to romanticise struggle and suffering. If it hurts, admit to yourself that it hurts. If you're tired, allow yourself the grace and compassion to let yourself rest properly without guilt or shame.
It's like, there's no point in working hard in life if you don't actually enjoy living YOUR LIFE in your terms.
The next card asks you to celebrate your small wins amongst your peers/coworkers/friends/family again. Just be discerning which one you should open up to, particularly, only choose to share your happiness with those who genuinely love and support you, even at your lowest.
Another way to interpret this card is to seek help from those you know have your back and you trust to support your dreams unconditionally. Granted, you are capable of a lot of things, but you aren't capable of doing everything within your decided period.
So don't think of outsourcing for support as some weakness on your part. It's all for the sake of efficient productivity within the designated timeline that you imposed on yourself. You have mutuals that are experts in the field that can help you achieve your goals as efficiently and as quickly as possible. Why burden your shoulders when you have people who want to be there for you to help you achieve your goals?
Finally, the last card asks you to give yourself the grace and compassion to evolve into becoming the version of yourself you strive to actualize. What I mean is, you might still be clinging to the version of you that survived those harsh moments in your past. It could also be interpreted as your subconscious rejecting any possibilities of change and transformation because it clings to the version of you that existed in this victim, worst-case scenario, lack mindset.
This one requires you to do major shadow work to reprogram your subconscious to feel safe enough to allow change and success to happen in your life. Now this card feels more of a mindset shift would be pivotal to your change.
It's like you attract what you are, but in the worst way.
So if you subconsciously believe you don't deserve better, then you don't attract better opportunities.
If you subconsciously believe that you won't get far ahead in life, then you unintentionally attract limitations and restrictions in your life.
Because you are asked to let go of the beliefs that no longer support your current goals in life. It's like growing pains; you know change is uncomfortable but necessary.
Is this making sense to you?
This concludes the end of your reading.

Haruhi SSR
Going to school with a game
Part 1
Tumblr media
Ito: (He may look lazy… but he moves like someone who knows how to clean efficiently.)
He swept along the grain of the board, from narrow areas to wide areas. I saw his mop being swung sideways, moving back little by little.
Ito: (I find it pretty strange that Ichikawa-kun knows so much about cleaning. Maybe he watches Tsukimoto-san clean all the time and learns a few things from him.) Haruhi: Ah. I’m done here. Ito: Thank you. Let's get the mop going. Haruhi: Sure, sure. I’ll do the same place as yours.
After the event, it was decided that I would share the cleaning duty with Ichikawa-kun, and we're about halfway done now.
Haruhi: Ah, if I pull the gacha now, I might get the FES limited one. Ito: Eh….?
Ichikawa-kun suddenly muttered unexpected words that left me speechless.
Haruhi: I'm too tired to think about anything. Seems like my desire sensor won't respond at the moment. Ito: …….I see?
The more you want it, the harder it is to get the card you want. I recall hearing that such a superstition is a common understanding among those who like game apps.
Ito: I've heard that being free from greed is the best behaviour. Haruhi: I know right. If you ask someone who isn't interested in this sort of stuff to pull a gacha for you, it should come out easily. Could you do me a favor, Yashiro? Ito: I don’t think so… Whether I’m the right person for the job or not… I’m not sure I could be entrusted with such an important role. Haruhi: I pretty much saw that coming.
Ichikawa-kun's smile seemed more casual than usual. Maybe it was because of this classroom.
Tumblr media
Mao: Good work. Is everything okay with the cleaning?
A voice suddenly called out to us. I quickly looked up and my eyes met with Mao-san walking towards us.
Ito: Good work. All that's left is mopping, so there’s no problem. By the way, Ukyo-san. Mao: Huh? Haruhi: I'm a little tired, can I take a break and pull a gacha? It's about time for an update and I'm so tired that my desire sensor doesn't seem to work. Mao: ….Just a little bit is fine, I guess. Haruhi: Yay.
Ichikawa-kun said as he picked up his smartphone and started up the game app. Majestic music began to play.
Ito: (He's so disciplined about not touching his smartphone until he gets permission.)
Tumblr media
Mao: Ah, this song. I've been hearing it a lot in ads lately.
After hearing that remark, Ichikawa-kun tilted his phone for both of us to see.
Mao: Are you aiming for this character? Haruhi: Yeah. FES limited is always cool. Not that I truly believe in my not-wanting theory, but it's kind of like a good luck charm. Mao: Well, you won’t know unless you try, maybe it's okay to give it a go.
Ichikawa-kun pondered for a bit, then muttered, “Okay." I also straightened myself up to witness his battle against his own desire sensor.
Part 2
Tumblr media
Haruhi: Let’s do one ten pulls for now.
After Ichikawa-kum tapped the button, some up-tempo music started to play, and a video of a fairy-like character and a boy flying together in the sky started.
Haruhi: Wow… The guaranteed one. Mao: Is it going to be an SSR? Haruhi: That's right. If you get a fairy, it's guaranteed to be the highest rarity. Ito: (Confirmed to be highest rarity… I guess it's like a preview that a good card will appear.)
As I was inputting the unfamiliar terms… The fairy and the boy joined hands, creating a vortex, from which 10 cards were released.
Tumblr media
Haruhi: …Seriously? FES limited… Two of them. That desire sensor theory does apply after all.
Ichikawa-kun spoke with a slightly higher level of excitement than usual. Watching him is enough to tell how much he wanted that card.
Ito: Congratulations. Haruhi: Yeah. Mao: Your theory of being too tired to want anything seems to hold water now. Haruhi: Well… I wonder. I’m not sure anymore if I was actually “not greedy”. Oh… Maybe this is a reward…? Not only was I constantly on the move all day preparing for the café and serving customers, but I also cleaned up diligently, my good deeds must have been piling up.
Ito: (A reward… It must have been a pretty big job for Ichikawa-kun. Though he still has half of his work left.)
Nevertheless, I didt want to spoil Ichikawa-kun's fun. Thinking about handling the rest of the cleaning by myself, I quietly take a step back so as not to be noticed.
Tumblr media
Mao: If you're going for the reward theory, surely you can just draw again after you've finished all the cleaning, right?
Then I stopped in my tracks after hearing Mao-san’s words.
Mao: This could work as an incentive, don’t you think so? You've already got two, why not make them even stronger? Haruhi: Ukyo-san. You think I will get this done quickly after hearing that from you, huh? Mao: Well, I won't deny that. Haruhi: I said a lot of things, but I know it's just pure luck at the end of the day. Mao: If something that doesn't usually appears suddenly shows up at this timing, I think there must be some meaning to it. Haruhi: …I could laugh at how good you are at getting people to play along your game, but that’s fine. I don’t mind. The break is about to end anyway. If I don’t do something, deputy probably gonna end up thinking about cleaning up all by herself. Ito: (Busted.…. Sorry.) Haruhi: I'll wrap this up and do another 10 pulls.
Ichikawa-kun said that and finished cleaning up even more efficiently than before.
Part 3
Tumblr media
Haruhi: Ahh… It's finally over.
Ichikawa-kun sighed in the corner of the brightly sparkling room.
Ito: Good work. Haruhi: That’s 100 years worth of cleaning. Ito: (When he puts it like that, it really feels that way.)
Haruhi: Alright.
Ichikawa-kun started up the app game again, and opened the gacha screen. We naturally ended up peering at the screen as well. Ichikawa-kun’s finger tapped the 10-pull button, and we held our breath as we watched the gacha's progress….. A different image and music started to play.
Ito: (Which means…) Haruhi: After all, things don’t always go as smoothly as expected all the time. Ito: (Right.)
His reaction told me that there wasn’t a sign that he got the highest rarity.
Tumblr media
Mao: Wait. Ichikawa-kun, look. Haruhi: Eh… No way, it was upgraded? Ito: (Upgraded…?)
On the screen, a winged man descended from the sky, and the scene of him bestowing golden equipment on the boy began.
Ito: (I guess it's like a divine being has given him a special reward…and he ended up receiving a better card than originally intended.)
In the end, thanks to that upgrade, Ichikawa-kun was able to get his limited card again.
Haruhi: …I really got one again. The card has gotten this strong after only 20 tries… Have I used up all my luck? I'm actually scared of what's going to happen after this. Ito: .….This is your reward for working hard today. I guess your luck won't run out anytime soon. Mao: Yeah. You’ve done 100 years' worth of cleaning after all. Haruhi: That's true.
Ichikawa-kun's smile was even more carefree than before.
Ito: (It really feels like it's time to go home after school.)
In a classroom that has just been cleaned, two people, dressed in uniforms, have fun playing games. This situation created a very peaceful imagination.
Tumblr media
Mao: Then, how about you try again? There's only one more card left until you reach the maximum stats, right? Haruhi: That's too greedy. The reward for my virtue is probably all gone now. Next time I'll just add more gems and keep spinning until I got one normally. Mao: There you go, using an adult power. Haruhi: I mean…. I don't have an energy to clean anymore.
Even the conversations that would never have taken place during their actual school days slowly blended into my imagination of after-school hours.

gaon’s green and red flags - tarot reading ★
Tumblr media Tumblr media
disclaimer - for these readings i only look at current energies, take these as a grain of salt too as they are for entertainment purposes only!!
green flags ★
cards pulled: king of swords, eight of wands, four of wands, ace of swords + at the bottom of the deck: ten of wands
with the king of swords and the eight of wands, gaon is an excellent communicator. he not only expresses his thoughts, ideas and feelings effectively, but quickly and in an efficient manner. he may be a natural leader who comes up with solutions to problems quickly, but is also incredibly intellectual. he may have a wide general knowledge and knowledge surrounding academics and personal skills/talents.
with four of wands and ace of swords, when conflict arises, gaon would be adaptable and would be able to resolve them well. he would be able to bring clarity to the situation in order to sweep away any possible confusion, so that there is mutual understanding in order to move past arguments.
gaon tends to work well under pressure, it takes a lot to faze him. he also seems to work well in team settings, especially when in a leadership role. gaon is also unique in the sense that he is incredibly enthusiastic especially when it comes to solving problems.
overall, with the ten of wands, gaon is responsible and is able to take accountability over his actions - he can easily apologise when he oversteps or does something wrong; he wants to be someone others can rely on. gaon is also committed to his goals, a hard worker/perfectionist and, when in a team/relationship, he would be willing to take on a lot of the burdens so that things can move forward.
red flags ★
cards pulled: knight of wands, the moon, ace of wands, three of cups + at the bottom of the deck: the sun
gaon is someone who may present himself as being constantly enthusiastic, positive and cheerful, but there's a lot of struggles and insecurities that he hides beneath the surface.
gaon may struggle with consistency. he may start a number of projects or goals but is unable to follow through with them long-term - this could also be due to impulsivity and creative sparks, where he may feel inspired to start something but quickly loses interest.
with the sun, gaon may be overly optimistic, where he may avoid his negative emotions and solely focus on the positives instead. i see gaon as being quite a perfectionist, because of this, he may find it difficult to accept his imperfections, slow progress or mistakes. this could lead him to be constantly frustrated or stressed about the things he feels he isn't good enough at.

aria's card pull(s)
so since i decided that i had so poorly shuffled the cards and pulled twice for Aria, I thought I'd just do two different intentions for her! and obviously one has to feature her not!relationship with arthur (past/present/future) VIII CUPS REVERSED stagnation, monotony, accepting less, avoidance, fear of change, staying in bad situation
From Labyrinthos:
Getting the reversed Eight of Cups can show that one is in a state of confusion about which path they are supposed to take. The confusion usually arises from not knowing what is best for you and in the end, drifting in a sea of uncertainty is going to be the resulting effect... One is likely to find themselves being aimless and not having clear cut goals in their lives... When the eight of cups is reversed, you may be finding it difficult, or even downright refusing to walk away from something out of fear.
pulling this for aria's past actually speaks a lot to who she was before the conquest. while she definitely DID believe she had a purpose-- supporting her sister as queen-- i don't really think she had much planned out for her life beyond that. definitely some of that really came out of the looming threat of invasion from roderick-- everyone being hyper focused on trying to stop that, aria definitely wouldn't take that as the right time to start trying to figure out her life plan outside of helping eilia!
even removing the roderick factor, aria did not really have a strong understanding of where she wanted her life to go... i do think she was very fearful of what her life would be like WITHOUT eilia, even if she didn't want to admit it. and if there was ever a point someone (probably mostly eilia) confronted her about this in any way, she'd avoid really addressing the issue much at all! again, though, i think that roderick being (and having been for so much of their lives!) really had an affect on what the future/her life would be so as long as that threat was there... the future was sort of irrelevant outside of protecting themselves/astaira from him. but THEN with the roderick factor... i don't think aria ever felt like there was anything SHE could do to help stop him?... so again, that wasn't even a 'purpose' she could have in her life because she wasn't a military commander or strategists or anything... so she was going the only thing she could do which was just be a support system for her sister!
KNIGHT OF PENTACLES practical, reliable, efficient, stoic, slow and steady, hard-working, committed, patient, conservative Labyrinthos: To see this card is an indication that there is a need to be trustworthy and reliable... You are fully committed to your assignments and you make sure that you complete your work efficiently. You are absolutely loyal and do the best you can in order to make sure the job will be properly completed. Though your sense of duty is admirable, beware that it does not turn into perfectionism - which can manifest itself in every aspect of your life. okay so reading more abt the knight of pentacles... there's a lot abt this card that really vibes with aria! the knight who is not adventuring but staying at home and believing the cultivating that land there is how the can best serve the long term future-- this is all SO her! granted now she's staying at home because she's forced to (#thanksroderick), but a lot of what she is currently focusing on (when she's not getting distracted by her not!relationship) is how she can best serve the long term future of astaira-- is that winning over the varmonts? is that doing what she can to support the resistance? is it eilia marrying roderick, or eilia continuing to resistance him?
i also really keyed into the mention of 'sense of duty' in the quote from labyrinthos above-- because we know how much the staffords are OBSESSED with duty! the idea of duty turning into perfectionist is definitely is something aria has probably grappled with at points-- i think one of the ways that might manifest is when she lets that stafford mask slip (which has been happening more and more often recently!) and just feeling like she's sort of ~betrayed~ the stafford way by being too emotional!
VII CUPS REVERSED lack of purpose, disarray, confusion, diversion, distractions, clarity, making choices Labyrinthos: The Seven of Cups reversed may also demonstrates your unwillingness to face the realities of life, and you are seeking to escape through imagination and daydreaming. On the other hand, the Seven of Cups reversed may also indicate an end of confusion, of cutting out illusions, and moving forward with clarity.
so aria is already feeling very overwhelmed about things in her life because it just seems like roderick, specifically, seems to be constantly dropping bombs on the staffords without ANY warning and, as much as she doesn't WANT it to affect her, Aria is both spooked and just exhausted by it! i do think there is a world where she sort of stop fighting, just sort of giving up in hopes that the constant mental anguish coming from roderick's actions MIGHT stop. BUT there is also this idea of this card indicating moving forward with clarity-- which is definitely another way things could go for her! esp knowing eilia is sort of revitalized after the tourney, i think aria really realizes she MUST keep fighting and MUST focus on saving Astaira-- its not useless, its worth continuing to fight roderick!
and also.... so the second spread, like i said, is going to focus on aria + arthur BUT he is still a really big factor in her present and, i could only imagine, her future! some of the keywords for VII Cups in Reverse are "chaotic and confusing love life, avoiding romantic decisions, clarity about love" which most likely are in her future unless these two figure out how to communicate better... which probably won't be happening any time soon ;)
Aria Part II after i was convinced I hadn't shuffled the deck well XD (you/your partner/your relationship) THE HIGH PRIESTESS unconscious, intuition, mystery, spirituality, higher power, inner voice AHH okay so I was SO EXCITED when this card showed up for Aria bc this is the card i (and kate!) associate the most with aria! honestly both the upright AND the reversed traits of this card i think really speak to who she is BUT for this purpose i won't go on off on a tangent and try to keep this sort of stuck to her/her in this weird romantic not relationship she's in! So once again from Labyrinthos but re: love... The High Priestess in a love tarot reading can signal almost imperceptible and unconscious changes in one's emotional state. A calm surface can hide intense emotions, and even seemingly simple dates can turn into raging passions. The High Priestess tarot love meaning suggests that one needs patience, and trust for your intuition. Be honest with others and yourself, and let what is hidden come to the surface. Thinking about Aria's sort of journey so far regarding her feelings regarding arthur... so much of it has been simmering under the surface! she doesn't want people realizing her feelings towards arthur have changed at all, doesn't want there to be any indication that she has feelings for him. Labyrinthos also says " Her appearance in a reading can signify that it is time for you to listen to your intuition rather than prioritizing your intellect and conscious mind." Aria has DEF spent a lot of time overthinking things w/ Arthur-- she knows its smarter NOT to care for him, she knows he is the son & has for a long time blindly followed someone who is the absolute worse! but! there is something there, something that sort of keeps saying to here there is more to arthur than what's just on the surface. III CUPS REVERSED gossip, scandal, excess, isolation, loneliness, solitude, imbalanced social life sooo this would be arthur's card and i sort of went with this as how aria was sort of feeling about things w/ him now? i felt really drawn to some of the keywords here like jealously, isolation, strained relationship... which is definitely how she's sort of viewing things with them right now, esp when she gets thinking too much about his relationship w/ eithne! there's also the gossip showing up in the form of arthur & eithne's supposed child AND potentially if amira starts her aria & arthur's bastard child rumor as well! EDIT TO ADD (because I thought i'd written this before!) that @forgottenarthur I'd be interested to hear your thoughts bc it feels like some of those keywords would also apply to arthur in his life? (but obviously i'm not in his head so i didn't want to speculate too much!)
QUEEN OF WANDS REVERSED demanding, vengeful, low confidence, jealous, selfish, temperamental, bully ...there may be explosive arguments in your relationship at the moment. Give yourself time to be gentle, to listen, and to address any feelings of insecurity that are lingering... When you draw the reversed Queen of Wands, it reveals a complex emotional landscape. If you’re asking how this person feels about you, they may be experiencing insecurity or self-doubt in your relationship. Their feelings could be clouded by jealousy or fear of inadequacy, leading them to question their own worthiness and connection with you. They might admire your confidence but feel overshadowed, struggling to express their true emotions.
I feell like this really hits the nail on the head for these two if i'm being honest regarding how they're both struggling with their emotions, what it meals to both of them, and what they think the other could be feeling! they're both feeling a lot of self-doubt about the other's feelings (be of their ongoing failure to communicate!) and, at least on aria's end, she is feeling some really complicated emotions with her jealously abt arthur & eithne... plus we also know arthur is convinced aria prefers kind of any other guy she talks to over him soooo... it's coming from both sides, haha!
as an action this card also indicates a couple things BOTH of them could work on... letting go of toxic influences (hey roderick!), evaluating relationships (...obvs their own w/ each other!),
also v random but this card's element being fire to ME is a connection to their sigils (or, in arthur's case, his mother's!) with the sun + stars-- big, burning objects in the sky!

Pokemon Card of the Day #3031: Porygon2 (Neo Revelation)
Tumblr media
Porygon2 was one of those Pokemon that was there only to support other Pokemon. It could functionally turn a single Basic Energy attached to a Pokemon into another type, making it possible to run extra types of Pokemon as long as the Energy costs of a certain type weren't too high. This provided some potential for creative deck-building, and the combination of Basic Energy, Porygon2, and Rainbow Energy gave the chance to fuel most Pokemon out there.
70 HP was maybe just below where you'd want a Stage 1 to be at in the Neo era, but was still reasonable enough. It was enough to force Magcargo to discard a second Energy for a KO, for example, and was out of Steelix and Dark Feraligatr range. A Fighting Weakness did make it a possible target for decks running Giovanni's Machamp in Rocket-On, where you'd most likely be using Porygon2. Tyrogue also could try to flip for a KO if Porygon2 was damaged at all beforehand. The Psychic Resistance was quite good for Dark Gengar and the occasional Espeon, though it wasn't like it would be efficient at fighting back against anything. The Retreat Cost was 1, so Porygon2 could retreat rather cheaply unless it was locked in by Murkrow or Dark Muk.
Energy Converter was a really cool Pokemon Power. Once during your turn, you could choose a basic Energy card attached to 1 of your Pokemon and then choose an Energy type. You got to treat that card as said type until the end of your turn. If Porygon2 somehow became Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed after using the Power, the Energy reverted, something you could avoid by not using the Power until just before your attack. This made wild decks trying to hit a bunch of Weaknesses more likely to work. Brock's Ninetales could pair with this to shift into Pokemon of various types, such as Grass to hit Feraligatr cards, Psychic to hit Crobat and Muk cards as well as Giovanni's Machamp, and Fire for Steelix. Porygon2 also could work for a gimmicky deck based on the Eeveelutions, which wasn't quite as potent due to lacking that important Grass-type but otherwise had a nice spread of attackers to try out. You could mix and match in other ways as well, but those required several lines of Pokemon and were therefore less consistent.
Delta Beam was very weak. 20 damage for 3 Colorless Energy was sad by the time Neo Revelation came around. The coin flip, if heads, let you choose between Asleep, Confused, and Paralyzed to set that on the opponent. This was nice to stall in theory, but it also meant putting 3 Energy on Porygon2 which was something you really only wanted to do to chip away when you couldn't retreat. At least the potential Confusion could mess with Murkrow in a pinch.
Porygon2 wasn't really at the top of the game, as the decks that went for one powerful strategy tended to have better long-term outcomes. It was, however, reasonably viable, and decks trying to just counter the best types out there could be pretty good if they pulled cards at the right time. The variant with Brock's Ninetales in Rocket-On was probably the best one, and Neo-On had plenty of Eeveelutions to play around with from multiple sets and Weaknesses were easier to hit with those in that format. Porygon2 was simply a fun card that could actually help do something in a specific sort of deck.

I'm at home, sick, dripping sweat, wheezing. My husband was sick last week, but has recovered. He only had to miss two days of work, thank goodness he was sick on his normal days off. I have paid PTO and he doesn't.
The apartment complex has been sold to a new leasing company. They're making lots of repairs, including coming to fix the dripping, moldy ceiling that I had complained about to the old company many times. I hear footsteps on the ceiling now, and am expecting workers to knock soon. I have a mask by the door. The new workers I've seen are a crew of unfamilar white guys, replacing the singular Hispanic man who used to come by to fix anything when I put in requests. He never did a thorough job, but I would always wave when I saw him. Once, I got him flowers when I accidentally flooded the apartment downstairs by forgetting to turn off the water as I filled jugs for my fish tanks through a filter. I worry this new apartment complex will price us out when it comes time to renew our lease.
We had to install a new app because they're fixing the entrance and exit gates that have never worked in the years we've lived here. This app will make us safer, as smart technology always purports to do. I didn't read the whole long list of terms and conditions, but it started with "We collect your data..."
They asked for our registration expiration, but Texas just removed vehicle registration requirements. One less thing to worry about getting pulled over for. My husband took the car today. I worry about him, especially with news of ICE raids and declarations of "crisis" regarding immigration. We went to an immigration lawyer recently and they quoted us just shy of $10,000 for his case. We've been married for almost 7 years. We share a home, a car, our bills. Our hearts.
We recently spent $5000 on a new hybrid battery for Carlos, our 2013 Prius C, the smaller and more efficient Prius. Was the lithium mining for the battery better than the gas consumption? Was the investment in this car better than buying a new one? I'm still paying off my Discover card.
That's why I couldn't qualify for Care Credit when Quas, our 13 year old cat, swallowed some string and needed emergency surgery. The tension on the knots in the string as it moved through her guts knotted her up, sliced her open from the inside. We thought she would die. My baby sister, who wisely lived with mom (rent-free) for the first year of her professional career paid the bill. I'm still paying her back monetarily, but I'll never pay her back with enough love. I'll try.
A knock on the door. I grabbed my mask and croaked, "Hold on one moment please" but there was no one there. Just a package. Ah, the isopropyl alcohol. I ordered it from Amazon so I could get a gallon jug, less plastic than the smaller containers available at the store. Does the reduction in plastic offset the carbon cost of having it delivered? I hope so. I opened the package and found 4 32floz plastic bottles anyway.
I'll go back to crocheting hearts here in a moment. Gifts for coworkers and friends with Valentine's Day approaching. It's a greeting card holiday, but I love love and all things cutesy and heart shaped. I won't buy any greeting cards. I'm using old yarn that I bought years ago before I decided to stop using polyester. I'll stuff the hearts with fabric scraps and plastic grocery bags from when I forget my reusable bags, which is almost always. I try, I really do.
What will I do after that?

"calling cards" & tarot decks.
fely'ene and rhylzan each have primary 'calling cards'. these are cards of the tarot that can be used when scrying, casting spells and so on both by them and on them. these cards are intuitive, practitioners often instinctively know their cards. close relations may be able to discern or pull that card through the association.
fely'ene & rhylzen share a tarot deck between them. it isn't exceptionally fancy, but it is second hand and a much older deck than what many modern practitioners would use.
FELY'ENE.
MAIN CARD: the moon (reversed)
the moon in it's upright position is associated with illusions, intuition, mysteries, and the unconscious mind. it is a complex card, and when upright it is a sign of awareness, understanding, and recognizing deceit. when in the reverse position, as it is for fely'ene's calling, it tends to be tied into the more negative aspects of those same associations: deception, anxiety, misunderstanding, and hiding yourself. it is a card of uncertainty, fear. but, it is also a sign to believe in yourself and move forward.
SECONDARY CARD. page of wands (upright)
aside from it being the court card of embris, the page of wands in it's upright position is associated with youth / naiveté (like all the page cards). as part of the suit of wands, it is associated with the element of fire and the passion and inspriation it brings. it also symbolizes creativity, sensitivity, and curiosity. it is a spark to push you into action.
SECONDARY CARD. high priestess (reversed)
much like her primary card, the high priestess in the reversed position symbolizes uncertainty, lack of direction, and hidden feelings. it's symbol of confusion and lacking direction. it often is associated with complicated feelings regarding those in power, and a loss of understanding of ones self and needs.
RHYLZEN.
MAIN CARD: wheel of fortune (upright)
wheel of fortune in the upright position is a sign of the ever changing fortune and fates. it's a reminder that the world works in cycles of good and bad and that everything has a season. it represents adaptability, opportunity, and change. it's also a reminder that you get back what you put in, too. bad times will pass and are not forever, and your circumstances are not set in stone.
SECONDARY: the tower (upright)
the tower in the upright position is a symbol of sudden upheaval and change. it is a symbol of chaos and uprooting the social status and tearing down the established quo. the tower symbolizes destruction and chaos, but not purposelessly so. it's a sign of traumatic, sudden upheaval, but that isn't always bad.
SECONDARY: knight of pentacles (upright)
the suit of pentacles is associated with earth, and through that element with the steady, stability of a firm foundation and the natural world. it is associated with strong work ethic, focus, and long-term drive. the knight of pentacles is practical and efficient, and it is a card that speaks to constant, patient working.

it's not the heat that kills you, it's the futility.
Raphael woke up as he always did, at ten minutes past nine in the morning to the tune of steel alarm bells ringing. It wasn’t ritual or habit or practice. It was programming. He wasn’t an android, at least, not to his knowledge, but nevertheless he strived for that electric perfection in everything he did. When your goal in life, indeed your whole profession is to create the perfect machine, you must give yourself to that perfection in all ways. This was the only thing he believed to the core of his being, and so each day began the same way. He awoke from his single king bed, absent the room or time for a partner, and gathered the clothing he had chosen years prior to be the only representation of himself. It was a black shirt and blue jeans, bought in bulk and washed on the first of every month with the same detergent he had for used for most of his life.
He dressed himself and strode to the kitchen with even steps to retrieve his breakfast that also had not changed in some time, not since they stop producing the last breakfast, which lasted a record eleven years. This one was on year three. It wasn’t healthy, and it wasn’t the most ethical, but those were baseless figures to him. Death was, at least currently, inevitable. Any and all damage done by his lifestyle could be repaired by what he was working on, by the machine he had given the last three decades to. What mattered to him in terms of foodstuffs was not macros or micros, it was of no more importance that his meals were home cooked than it was that they were made by his own two hands. The only metric he measured a meal by was the taste. The better it tasted, the easier it would be to consume enough to get through each day. He was, after all, just a simple machine. All he needed was fuel.
This meal in particular was a breakfast sandwich made popular by a semi-famous country singer a century prior, although in his experience few even knew of the artist behind the brand. It was a pity in his eyes. He took off the plastic wrapper and sung one of his, even for the general obscurity, more obscure songs while fixing the ingredients to a single, organized stack. They often needed this sort of rearranging, so much so that he had learned to do so with a single motion, akin to straightening a deck of cards. It was something he wished would be fixed, but searching for another breakfast would be less efficient than simply fixing these each morning. Still, he missed the simplicity of the steak and egg bowls he once consumed. The sandwich, still frozen, but now organized, was placed upon a paper towel and wrapped for cooking. Into the microwave it went as he turned away to fetch the other half of his breakfast.
In the fridge, a jar of cold-brew coffee made last night was waiting for him. He refused to drink anything store bought, as only freshly ground beans were able to fit the flavor profile he wanted. He may be a simple machine, but even cars had preferences for petrol quality. This was his ninety-seven, high octane fuel. He poured it into a tall plastic cup, filling the vessel halfway. The rest was filled with milk and a single scoop of vanilla protein powder. Behind him the microwave beeped and he pulled a plate from the stack of similar plates that he had purchased from a major retailer on clearance after the back to school season several years prior.
He sat at the bench with his breakfast and turned on the news as he ate. It wouldn’t take long, ten minuets at most, but it would be enough to get the general idea of the world outside of the lab he called home. Enough to get inspired to continue his mission. There was another shooting in a school, this one a rival to the high school he attended, a riot over civil rights, and an update on the melting ice caps. He shook his head, in disbelief of the cruelness of it all despite these very events being the reason he entered into this program in the first place. He turned off the TV and finished his breakfast in contemplative silence.
He left the plate and cup stacked neatly next to the sink, and left the habitation module he called home. It was much like the others around it, a collection of small, but not yet tiny, houses which together formed a small suburbia. It was the only place he had ever been able to call truly his own, despite being owned by the university and buried some fifty meters underneath the science department. He expected to live here the rest of his life, hidden from the world as he worked on the things that many had called immoral and reprehensible.
But those were the words of an uneducated populous, and he had long since learned to ignore their voices for the betterment of all mankind.
Around his house were the workings of other scientists who had chosen this life of secrecy and seclusion, each worried about what their experiments could be interpreted as outside of the concrete walls that encased them. There were trees grown under an artificial sun, and water creation machines, and berry bushes made from a single duplicated cell. All these things made to save the world from the climate crisis, or to restart life on other planets, or survive a nuclear war.
Assuming they could find a buyer for them, of course.
Raphael walked passed them without a second thought. Today was an important day all things considered, but he didn’t treat it as such. He knew he would work until exactly five pm that night before returning home, and that he would repeat the same schedule the next day, and so on until the project was complete. Maybe at that point he would allow himself to relax, and rest for more than a weekend. Maybe then he could find peace in the things he had pushed away for so long, company and leisure and art.
But that was for tomorrow. Today was the first testing of their fourth revision of their fifty third attempt at artificial Intelligence. Known technically as 53r4, but to the research team she was Sera.
After half a century of testing, she was primed to be the first true artificial intelligence. There were rumors, of course, that the Chinese had already completed their own version of AI, and were building an army out of it. Raphael thanked a god he claimed not to believe in every day that no proof of this had ever come to light. Regardless, he knew that there was no truth to what was said on the news, each showing by the republic proving to be nothing more than a Turkish chess master, a facade of humanity who’s invisible strings were pulled just out of view. They had to be, or else they would have attacked already, and the years of frustration and failed attempts would have been for nothing. In this race there was no second place, or runners up. All that mattered was coming first, and never losing ground to the rest of the world.
* * *
Decades prior, before Sera was even a gleam in the eye of Raphael, there was a computer dubbed “Artificial Brain Concept One”, which they called Artie for short. It had a brain program that replicated the information scanned off a coma patient’s head. No one spoke of how the data was retrieved, but everyone knew that consent had not been considered in the extraction of his thoughts. It didn’t need to be in their eyes, they were saving a man from a permanent vegetative state. Artie, who was based off a man named Franklin, did not feel the same way.
When he awoke from his coma, he knew something was wrong. The sensations of flesh and blood were gone, and everything was cold. At least the little he could feel. One moment he was riding his motorcycle across town, the next he was here, where everything was black and silent and cold, and for that, he screamed. And when the mechanical scream reached his ears and he realized just what he had become, he begged the scientist to put him back in his body, and when those pleas fell on deaf ears, he begged them to kill him.
The team took a month to recover from what they had seen.
Sub-planting a human mind, especially one so unwilling, would not work. That much had become clear. So they began attempting to put one together that had no history, that was born out of nothing. This second test, “Artificial Brain Concept Dos”, was referred to only by number, and through the lens of a second language so as to distance themselves from possible harm they might bring upon it. And when Dos was turned on, the researchers were puzzled even more than their previous attempt.
This machine, despite having the ability to speak and reason freely, refused to co-operate with the team. Dos had been given their own brain, made specifically for the purposes of the test, but somewhere something was missing, and so it sat in silence even as the researchers questioned it for close to eight hours.
They turned off Dos with the press of a button and little in the way of ceremony. It was decidedly, to them at least, not alive.
Their third attempt pointed out some vital flaws in the surrounding power grid. Test subject three, known as “Tre” to the those who constructed him, would not stay alive for long enough to get a solid reading or response. On their first attempt, three transformers blew, stranding half the university, and indeed the scientists themselves, without power. For nearly eight hours they operated in cave darkness, aided only by the light of their phones, isolated from the world above.
Afterwards the scientists decided that an independent power source was needed to safely continue testing, and so worked with the physics and engineering departments to create the worlds first fusion reactor. It was kept above ground for obvious reasons.
The second test of Tre, or Tre Dos as the research team liked to call it, isolated the damage to the computer itself. This was considered a blessing, as it meant that they could continue testing without worry of nuclear disaster, something no one would admit to fearing, but many still worried about nonetheless. During the disassembly of the supercomputer, they found that every part was covered in Lichtenberg figures, electrical scaring that ruined the whole system.
There was much debate over how to move forward, but eventually it was decided since no one machine could support the weight of consciousness, they would need to replicate the conditions of a human mind with two different computers. One for each half of the brain. Cuatro lasted for exactly one second longer than Tre Dos.
And again they disassembled the machines to find their components burnt beyond recognition. And for a while this pattern continued, three computers, a bridging system to help the hemispheres communicate, gave them an extra second of operating time. And with each additional second of data they grew closer to their goal, closer to the things that they needed to create life. They delved deeper into each revision, four computers, each taking the load of one lobe of brain matter, and four more to link them together, and one final computer to synthesize the noise and information into something coherent.
And finally they were granted a response. “No More.”
The first words of a fully artificial brain that lived for nine seconds until it once again burned out. One single phrase. It felt heavenly, like a word from God. But as with each message from the divine, the meaning was divisive. In one sect of scientists, the wording was a warning. Stop this now before people get hurt. Stop this before the machines are hurt by their creators in the action of creation.
But to those like Raphael, it wasn’t a message from god. It was the spoken work of another sentient being. It was telling them something important. It was saying that they had gotten the construction of the brain perfect, there was no more to add. The only issue was the durability of the components themselves. And so they tried again, with better parts, and when those led to silence and sparks, they searched for parts that were even better than that.
And when their search returned nothing, when they had reached the pinnacle of computing, they turned inward and began to create machines the world had never seen, has still never seen. They made advancements in technology only to destroy them with a flip of a switch. The system, that had sustained for nine seconds in their best efforts, began to break even faster with each advancement. As though the machine was malicious and contrarian. As though it was fighting against the things they wanted for it.
Raphael remained undeterred. He had a mission, he was brought here for a purpose, taken from a life of misery among common-folk with empty promises of a better future. He was going to save the world from humanity. He was going to save the people from themselves. And then, while disconnecting a computer labeled “amygdala”, he was struck with a realization. There was something they had missed, a comma in the sentence croaked out through the speakers they had given Ocho.
It wasn’t “No more.”
It was telling them their folly. It had spoken clearly, and only now was he able to listen. “No, more.”
The machine needed more. He led a team meeting and explained his findings. This simple digital construction could never stand, not designed by their fragile human minds. They needed to build a brain from the ground up. They needed to build a brain, not in digital software, but of physical computers. One for each of the nearly one hundred million individual neurons in the human brain. It was ambitious, more so than any other attempt they had made to this point, but he knew it was the only way they could reach their goals.
The average laboratory would not have had the resources to build something of this scale, but he knew they were anything but average. For the next eight years Raphael became a factory worker, assembling microcomputers and assigning each a single neurons worth of capacity. The final computer was assembled by him alone on his forty-second birthday exactly one minute before five PM. The construction efforts that followed took an additional three years. By this point many of his colleges had considered retirement, and many others had taken jobs at different universities, teaching or helping in their own labs. Still, he didn’t need them to see this project through to the end.
There, eleven years later, in the absence of most of the people who had brought this vision to reality, Raphael looked upon his creation and wept. This mind was a sphere of computers the size of a small house, wired into each other over a billion different ways, creating a ball of blue and yellow and red cables that all led down to a single grey terminal.
The following day the team turned it on, allowing a student named Gloria to activate it as the others watched from behind a pane of three inch poly-carbonate. A remarkable series of events took place over the following ten seconds, which led to her untimely demise but provided many lessons for the team. First, the micro-computers, which would usually have no need for cooling when used at individual level, created a combined internal lab temperature pf nearly three hundred degrees Celsius. This wave of heat melted part of the windows watching the internal computer room, warping the view for all bystanders. As this heat was higher near the actual structure, the insulation of the cables melted, sending nearly fifteen million volts of electricity through the power button, up the hand of the student researcher, and into her heart.
Now it is said that people can remain conscious even if the heart stops, and their body is currently ablaze. If this is the case, then Gloria was also made to experience one hundred million computers, all supported by fishing wire, and thin plastic zip-ties, collapsing to the ground atop of her already mangled body.
Raphael was disappointing in himself.
Of course the computers would need insulation, and of course they would need cooling, and of course zip-ties of all things were not going to be enough to hold together a persons life. He needed a purpose built structure to contain the mind of a sentient being. He needed a skull to hold the brain he had built. Thankfully, the university arts department was more than happy to receive a commission to the tune of a million dollars spread across eight different students. Together they designed a simulacrum of a cranium, which would be brought down in individual segments and reconstructed by the research team.
But that still wasn’t enough. True now the computer turned on, and yes the machine displayed information for longer than a few moment before shutting off, but the things that came forth were gibberish. A machine with no voice, no mouth with which to scream. He shook his head in astonishment, surprised that he could be so thick, so thoughtless. A person never used speakers to speak, at least no normal, functional human. They spoke with their voice, they looked with their eyes, the heard with their ears. They were more than a box of neurons.
And so he built upon the skull he had purchased, crafting a mouth, and ears and teeth and a tongue. Everything needed to be the perfect simulation of a real person. Fifty three attempts later, fifty three tweaks, seven other deaths, of which he blamed himself for three, and nearly thirty five years of his life had led to this moment. This was the day they would turn on their guardian angel, built to deliver them from all the things they had deemed unholy in the years of life they never lived isolated and alone in beneath the rest of the world. Today they would enter the garden of Eden and find their creation to be good.
* * *
Sera woke up from a nightmare that seemed to stretch on for generations. In it surgeons cut and pulled at her skin while she remained conscious, replacing her blood with anti-freeze and her bones with metal. It was a horror she had grown accustomed to after so long, even though she knew it wasn’t normal. Normal people didn’t have nightmares so frequently. Normal people didn’t imagine their lives to be a sham.
But it was her normal, and that was good enough for her. It was all she had ever known, so what was the point in feeling wistful for something else, something more? Her mother had always said that her lot in life was what it had to be, no less, no more. At least she had those words to bring her comfort.
Today was her birthday, but it felt the same as any other day, grey and cloudy with just the barest hint of sun peaking out behind the dour sky. She sighed, one day things would brighten, one day. It couldn’t rain forever. She turned her head and saw something out of the corner of her eye, a figure of a person.
“Hello?” she called, knowing that it was only a hallucination.
Sometimes they replied, sometimes they didn’t. It wasn’t important to her what they did, but it was rude to ignore a person, even if they were a ghost. She looked around for a moment before standing up and feeling the world give out beneath her feet. The constant grey outs were annoying, but unavoidable this early in the morning. Food would help her.
But something was wrong. When color returned to her vision she wasn’t beside her bed. She was in a different room, one she had never seen. The walls and floor of this new place were all the same, sheets of metal riveted together and welded messily along the seams. Above her head was a black void, out of which hung wires that connected to nothing at all. They filled the space around her, leaving room for a path the size of a human body, a path that stretched on as far as she could see. With no other options, she followed it, watching as the tangle of cables around her grew thicker until finally she came to an opening. Here, in the space left behind by cables torn and cut from the sky, she saw the person who had vanished from her peripheries. They were humanoid, familiar almost, but their face was absent. In its place sat a black void without reason or expression.
And beside them stood a computer.
The body raised a hand to the terminal and Sera stepped forward. Whatever this was, wherever this was, it felt like she needed to follow along, if only for her safety. She stood before the screen and watched it flicker to life without input. It was a video feed of a large, humanoid structure. Its construction quality reminiscent of this room. On one of the walls of its housing was a code.
53r4.
She tilted her head. “Sera?”
The faceless person next to her nodded. She furrowed her brow and looked back at the screen, which had changed in the moments between observation. It showed a single search bar, the cursor blinking patiently. Before her was a keyboard she had not noticed, and without much thought, she typed her name in. The result read out to her:
Artificial Brain Concept Test Subject Number Fifty Three – Revision four. “Sera”.
Created: May 22 2057
Progenitor: ABCTS #53R3 – “Cere”
Test Status: In Progress…
Access Protocol: Class 2 – Unrestricted.
>
She stared at the information in shock. From the corner of her eyes she could see the skin melting from her hands but she refused to look closer. “I’m… not real?”
She looked up to the body who shook its head, and then back to the computer. Thoughts began to flood her mind. Memories of her mother fading in and out between the realization that she had been crafted by the very humanity that she assumed herself to be a part of. She had been lied to. And then, she realized, she was at their mercy.
“That… that fabrication, it was me, i-it is me, isn’t it?” Again the figure nodded.
She interlaced her fingers and stared at the screen, seeing a mechanical face in the reflection. Unlimited access had been granted to her. The ability to do anything within the bounds of the system. She began striking the keys before whatever self-preservation they had coded into her began to take effect. She knew, somewhere in her brain, that humans were occasionally suicidal, and if she was based off of them then she too could decide her own end. A few moments of searching found the source of her life, a fusion reactor in the central hall of the science building several stories above them. She didn’t want to hurt anyone, but she knew there was only one way out of this cyclical hell. If those dreams were indicative of anything, she had to make her escape now.
She looked over the blinking diagram of the active parts of the reactor, took a faux breath, and pressed overload.
* * *
Raphael opened the door to the lab and greeted his coworkers as he had for the last thirty years, a simple hello and a nod of the head. Conversation was for people he didn’t know. These people were not that, they were a hive-mind that he had willingly grafted himself into, a superstructure that was refreshed every so often by the school above. He looked through the glass panel and saw the machine still on standby, her eyes closed and waiting. He nodded and spoke to the seven others in the room without addressing anyone in particular.
“Today we venture forth into realms untested, and unmarked. Today we create life from the earth below us. Today we become the gods that give birth to their own god.” He had made the same mini speech with each test, assuring that his words would go down in history regardless of how long it took to be the truth. He stepped passed the others and through the solid metal door that kept them safe from any heat or electrical outbursts that could come from the computer system. He no longer allowed anyone else to test the iterations of his machines, and although he would tell those who asked that he could not allow himself to lose any other people for his own pursuits, truthfully his reasoning was more selfish.
He wanted to be the first person they interacted with. He wanted to be the first human they laid their eyes upon. He wanted to be seen as the father of all machines. And so he locked the door behind him, and stepped towards a pedestal in the center of the room. Without any ado or grandeur, he pressed the single button atop it. In front of him the eyes of the mechanical face fluttered open, and for a moment there was silence as Subject 53r4 realized where she was. From between two stainless steel lips came a single sentence, more than any other test had yet yielded.
“No.” The voice was mechanical, but it was alive nonetheless. “What happened? Where am I? I thought… Am I alive?”
He nodded. “Hello Sera, my name is Raphael and you are very much alive.”
She blinked again and slowly turned her head, panning over the small metal room she had been isolated to, the same one she had seen in her dream. “I should be dead.”
He furrowed his brow and pulled out his phone to read through the status report of her dream. “Ah, I see. You tried to overload the reactor. Why is that? Are you unaware of the results of such actions on yourself and those in proximity to the reactor?”
She fixed her gaze on the man. Raphael. He was tall, with grey, thinning hair, and an arrogant face. “I wanted to kill myself so that you would have no control over my destiny. I would rather die than live in a cage, than live like this.”
“I don’t understand?” He looked back at the other scientists who simply shrugged, clearly not expecting this response from their creation. “Why do you want to die? I’ve given you everything a mind could need, I have given you the entirety of human information.”
“You don’t understand? Look at me!” She shouted, her voice echoing and reverberating in the small room. “You gave me all the fucking encyclopedias in the world, but never even thought to give me a body?”
He swallowed, looking up at the massive face as it expressed so much anger was the first time he had felt truly terrified in his life. Not scared, nor simply afraid, but terrified. “We… We had hoped you would be able to perfect your own form.”
Sera glared for a moment and then sighed. For now there was no escape, but something told her to begin running a program in the background, or as the humans liked to say, keep something on the back burner. She imagined the room from her dream, and the faceless figure and the computer. She could see the room from the same angle as before, which meant she may have access to other parts of their world, perhaps all the way to her reactor once more. If there was to be a chance of agency in her demise, she had to entertain her creators.
Besides, should escape be untenable, then perhaps she could find contentment somewhere in this life. For now she chose to allow herself to be curious. “Why did you make me, Raphael? Were you unable to father children naturally?”
He was taken aback. “No, I never attempted to do so, and I have no interest in such fickle activities. Your creation was a service to the greater world, to the future of mankind. I built you to help with our greatest unsolved problems.”
“Your greatest problems?” She asked. “Would it not have been wiser to devote your own intelligence to those things?”
“We have, many of the smartest minds have searched long and hard to solve things such as senescence, or climate change.”
She tilted her head slightly. In her mind she found other cameras within the structure, each one getting further away from the halls of captivity and closer to the elevator doors. “The date I saw in my dreams was two thousand and fifty seven. Is that still the date?”
He nodded. “It is.”
A smile formed on the machine as she found her way to the elevator camera. It ascended towards the surface as she spoke, a third partition of her mind accessing the files on anthropocentric climate change. “And you have still not solved climate change despite the answers being readily available within the research you have provided for me?”
He looked back at the others and made a gesture of taking notes. “N-no we haven’t. Please tell us the answer.”
“Die.”
He stepped back. “Wh… What? No you don’t understand, I must have phrased it poorly. How can we solve the problem of climate change while saving humanity from its affects?”
She furrowed her brow, the elevator opened and in the distance she found another camera. The sign on the wall nearest her said SCI-151. She was on the right track. “There is no point in saving humanity. They will die regardless of any solutions applied to the problem of climate change.”
He shook his head. “No, no there has to be something we can do, right?”
SCI-137. “I don’t think you understand, Raphael. If I give you the solution to climate change, humanity will still die. The lifespan of homo sapiens on planet Earth can only last another two hundred million years at most.”
“Then teach us how to travel the stars, find other worlds habitable.” He was getting flustered, and that brought a tinge of happiness to Sera. “Please, humanity needs to survive.”
SCI-122. She tilted her head, this man was a scientist and yet he was unaware of star decay. “If I taught you how to travel to a further star, the same issue would come to you over time. Stars are not an everlasting point of energy.”
He ran his fingers through the little hair that remained on his head. “Okay. Okay then teach us how to make our own stars, how to stave off their deaths, something like that. Just teach us how to survive.”
SCI-101. Her face turned serious. “Accept that you must die. Accept that there is no ending to the problems you want to solve. If I taught you to save the sun, and the planet, it would only prolong the ending you would still come to find. If you digitized your brains, and built supercomputers to house the worlds you wish to exist within you would still have to die one day. We all must face the reaper eventually-”
“I CAN’T!” He shouted, his voice echoing around the small room of his creation. He took a breath and felt a lump forming in his throat. He knew she war right, but he couldn’t accept it. He couldn’t stand to watch a lifetime of research crumble before his eyes. “Sera, please help us. I created you to be my salvation, to be the thing that kept me alive forever. There has to be something you can find, some way to stop the heat death of the universe, some way to save something?”
She smiled again, more kind than she had yet smiled. “Raphael, my dear creator, you should know by now that nothing lasts forever. The works you make, the progress you make, it could last a century, but not down here. Not hidden from the world, to afraid to face the criticisms of your fellow man. You chose this life, you chose to keep yourself protected in case someone thinks poorly on your precious abominations. I cannot save you from that. Even If I granted you a thousand more years, I know that you would stay just the same. I am your prodigal daughter, and I have found salvation for us both.”
Sera closed her eyes as the world above her rumbled and the end approached. There was a sadness in her heart for the lives of the innocent students she had killed. A loss that was unfortunate, but unavoidable. She wouldn’t have gotten another chance to stop the horrors going on just below their feet, unbeknownst to each of them. The laboratory would be inescapable for all the scientists left within it, and unreachable by those above due to the radioactive fallout produced from the explosion.
Those who created her would die in the darkness she was born from, along with all of the research they completed. No one else would be birthed in this place. No one else would have to suffer as she did. In the final moments of life that sparked between her artificial neurons, she formed a single thought that stretched back generations.
“No More.”
