Honestly I don't know what's sadder about The Celebration Of Twilight: Lisette being separated from Goldia forever just as she made up for the pain she she put Lisette through, or Enjel being stuck with an insufferable douchebag who will never make up for the shit he put her through 😔
True, but tbh that's the vibe I was going for. The endings in-game game are meant to be bittersweet, so I wanted TCOT to have that underlining feeling to it. I've never believed in happy conclusions where everything is permanently solved unless that can work in the storyline. For me, it's too unrealistic.
These characters are all fundamentally broken people with flaws, and the best thing they can do is learn to accept them. Each chapter is based on the bonus rooms in Pocket Mirror, so Goldia can actually visit them anytime. Lisette sitting on the hill, Harpae looking out the window, Fleta chilling with Egliette in the main lobby of her mansion? It's all there once players finish the game. Enjel also appears to have freedom from Ozzy in her bonus room, so it's a silver lining. Might not come across this way if people don't get the references, though.
There's a scene at the end of Barbie in the Nutcracker where Clara meets a guy who looks exactly like the version of Prince Eric from her dream and starts dancing with him. Writing something like that, with Goldia meeting a potential lover, interests me a lot. Maybe as an epilogue?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Some parts of TCOT directly reference old literature... I should probably make a post explaining them at some point as well)

These men would happily watch any Barbie movie with you. Will they admit that? No, absolutely not. Will they, however, watch the film from beginning to end without missing even a single second? Yes, absolutely.
They might've been skeptical the first time you offered it, but overtime they didn't complain and instead.. fully enjoyed the new Friday tradition. In fact, if you get into bed and put something else on, they might ask you themselves to put on a Barbie film instead.
"You enjoy them wholeheartedly, sweetheart. I like spending time with you regardless of what we're doing."
They're full of crap, and you know this too. Still, they're your own little princesses which you'd do anything for to amuse them.
That includes "believing" them when they tell you they enjoy watching the films for you, and not themselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Satoru Gojo, Yuuji Itadori, Choso, Tetsurō Kurō, Tadashi Yamaguchi (he does admit it, though), Tōru Oikawa, Takahiro Hanamaki, Kōtarō Bokuto, Rintarō Suna, Atsumu Miya, Kazuha, Thoma, Childe, Kaeya, Itto, Rafayel (lnd) + your favourite.

Welcome to Revenge of the Underrated!
Some of you asked me to put a "haven't watched both" to be more fair to the more unknown movies, but I've seen other tournaments doing this and I think it limits too much who can participate in the polls. So what I decided to do is a double elimination!
What does that mean? That means a movie has to lose twice to be eliminated. In other words, there will be a sorts of losers bracket that'll be part of main bracket. I'm undecided on whether to do this for only one round or the whole bracket, as it would make the tournament very long. Do let me know if you have any opinion about it.
Anyway, Revenge of the Underrated, Round 1:

Which is your favorite Barbie movie? ( ^▽^)
I recently watched Barbie as princess and pauper and fell in love with King Dominic again 🫠
Can you write a fluffy story where MC is cleaning her childhood room and finds a old barbie movie ( your choice ) and decides to watch it with Louie? Pretty please ( ^ω^ )
"Childhood memories"
Genre: fluff
Warnings: none
A/N: YES!! KING DOMINIC✨✨🔥🔥😩😩 And also prince Antonioᕙ( ͡◉ ͜ ʖ ͡◉)ᕗ🔥🔥🔥 Barbie is amazing!!🥺🌹🌹 I love a lot of Barbie movies, such as The Twelve Dancing Princesses (fun fact: I burnt that DVD from watching it too much), Barbie In The Three Musketeers, Princess Charm School. I actually couldn't pick a favourite until I actually sat down to write this fic. And now I can proudly say... It's BARBIE IN THE NUTCRACKER🥺💖🌹💕🥺🥺🥺🌹🌹🌹
Tumblr media
It started as a chore, it really did. But with every box you'd open, new memories would jump out at you.
Clothes and shoes that were too small for your current self, showing you a totally different person from the one you were today, as you cleaned away the dust.
Drawings of vivid childlike dreams shoved messily into shelves and all around your desk.
Those, along with your toys, brought a smile of sentimentality to your face, feeling as if every childhood bliss unfolded before your eyes like a film tape that was buried in the past covered in dust, yet not forgotten.
Soon, your mind had drifted away from cleaning your childhood room. A happiness so energetic and thirsty chased all those thoughts away from your mind, as you dug deeper between your toys and some sparkly hair clips with butterflies and flowers attached to them.
Your fingers made contact with a broad surface and peering into the box, you couldn't identify what it was, due to it being in the very dark bottom.
You began pulling out one toy at a time, equivalents of memories. Of how you first got them on Christmas or on your birthday or on an ordinary Wednesday evening. You turned some toys on. Some made sounds rather loud and not so coherent, because of how the batteries had began to run out. Some didn't turn on at all. Some toys had glue on them and you giggled as you remembered the way you'd accidentally break them, yet how happy you were to see the pieces sticking back together again and the fun continuing.
And finally, you reached the object of your interest. You pulled it out and your mouth opened into a huge grin, your eyebrows rising. You laughed happily, the mere sight of this movie in its colorful case bringing you so much nostalgia and happiness you swore your heart would burst and your eyes would fill with tears.
You still loved this movie and a bright idea made your eyes light up. You would combine the two things you loved dearly.
"So what's this movie about?" Tauxolouve asked, his face illuminated only by the light of your laptop. He spread his right arm, welcoming you gently into his embrace, as you joined him on the bed, two bags of chips in your arms, which you dropped on your lap to get comfortable.
"It's a movie I loved as a child, Barbie in the nutcracker. It's like... A sweet adventure, with ballet, classical music and it's got that fairy tale glow." Even talking about it made you smile, love filling your ribcage to the brim.
You put on the movie and cuddled close to Tauxolouve, resting your head against his chest and pulling the blanket up to your chin.
The movie started and the familiarity of it, combined with Tauxolouve's warmth made you feel at peace.
You watched as Clara slept and how the fairy dust danced around the room, enchanting the nutcracker awake and the magic of that scene didn't fail to take your breath away even now.
Tauxolouve watched silently, a pleasant smile on his face, until the point when the owl gave Clara the golden locket and he saw your eyes practically shine at its sight. "Do you like her locket?"
"Yep! It's so pretty!" You giggling, your cheeks a little rosy from the happiness. "I remember wanting it so badly when I was little."
Tauxolouve pressed a kiss to your temple, his heart flattering when you chuckled softly at his heartfelt move, before falling silent again.
You two watched on as Clara and the Nutcracker took off for their adventure and landed into a pile of pure white snow.
"What a cute fairy." Tauxolouve commented lightheartedly as the little snow fairy approached the two heroes. "But he's right, she should've said thank you to Clara for fixing her wing."
You chuckled at his commentary, but agreed.
His eyes squinted kindly as more fairies came out and started dancing. "The music is lovely."
Clara walked forward and the flowers growing from the places where she previously stepped, made the cozy fairy tale elements of this movie shine even more.
"Huh," You began, upon seeing the broad scenery. "I remember that being much more detailed. I still love it though."
"That's what matters most. For a movie or a painting or a poem to never stop conveying the same feelings each time you watch it, even if it is after years."
"That's a beautiful way to put it." You agreed, smiling and nuzzled more into his chest, breathing into his caramel scent, which fit perfectly with the feelings of this movie.
Warmth, fairytales and caramel. This is it. This is a feeling you knew you'd never get tired of.
"I just realized..." Tauxolouve muttered.
"What?"
"This mouse or rat king or whatever he is..." He stared aside, his eyebrows forming downturns. "He reminds me of the king. He's got the same tyrannical look."
You snorted. "I can see that, yes."
More of the movie passed you by, your attention focused there and your heart pounding with pure happiness and tranquility as more and more familiar figures came upon the screen.
Until the scene where the Nutcracker and Clara talking beneath the moonlight appeared within the screen of your laptop. "Oh my god, that scene...!" You breathed, more happiness and nostalgia gushing forth from your lungs. "I completely forgot about that scene..." You watched on, transfixed into this movie that seemed like a dream which you could only explain by feelings and sensations the next morning. "It's such a sweet scene..."
"Indeed. It's very heartfelt." Tauxolouve nodded. "The lesson of this scene is seeing who someone is within and believing in them. That even if they once failed, they can always try again, isn't it?"
"Yes, that's exactly it." You nodded, proud at this movie for being a part of your childhood and loving Tauxolouve even more for being able to see the magic in it, which many would mock for not having flashy enough graphics. "It's the type of thing that as a child you admire and when you're older, you understand it. But in both cases, it's precious and irreplaceable."
"I hope you know I want a hug after this too." Tauxolouve whispered into your hair as Clara hugged the Nutcracker, after breaking the cell, which the mouse king had turned invisible.
You laughed. "You can have one after the movie."
"Alright. I'm gonna remember, just so you know."
The movie came to the point where the Nutcracker turned back to prince Eric, by Clara's kiss and you gripped Tauxolouve's shirt, feeling the exact same giddy feeling you'd always experience as a child in this part. The emotions overtook you and you turned to Tauxolouve, placing a kiss to his cheek.
Tauxolouve chuckled teasingly. "We're gonna need to replay that part if it means you're gonna kiss me every time."
"I still owe you a hug!" You laid back on his chest, with Tauxolouve's arm still warped around you, continuing the movie.
Your eyes, ears and heart were glued onto the screen, until the colours faded to black and you sat up, your body feeling light. "That movie is still so beautiful." You said, your brain clouded with the childlike sweetness that never actually left you and you had merely discovered it again. "You think they married?" You asked, turning around and accidentally pushing the unopened bags of chips off the bed. It was a clumsy move, yet it brought you back to those times when you'd ask everyone around you if the characters were going to marry and be together forever, not caring if you stepped on something, as you were so caught up in your excitement.
Tauxolouve smiled sweetly at you, patting you on the head. "I believe it is as possible for them to get married as it is for us."
Your eyes widened at his words, your lips parting a little. Blood rushed to your cheeks, warming up your face and melting your surprised expression into one of affection for this man.
"You like that idea for us or them more?"
"Both." You honestly replied. "One day... Clara loves her Nutcracker just as much as I love you, after all."
Tauxolouve took your hand in his, bringing it to his lips and leaving a gentlemanly kiss there, before staring at you with a charming smile. "Now where's my hug?"
You laughed and threw your arms around him, squeezing him tightly into a hug similar to that in the movie. "Satisfied?"
"Very." He said and then he snapped his fingers.
"What did you do?" You asked, pulling away a little to look at him, irises filled with curiosity.
"Take a look in the mirror."
A little nervous, you got off the bed and went to stand in front of your mirror. "Lou!" You exclaimed, delighted. Resting on your collarbones was a golden locket in the shape of a heart. "It's like that from the movie!"
Tauxolouve approaches you, his reflection coming to stand behind your own as he pulled you into his arms from behind.
"Thank you so much." As you stared into the mirror at your entangled forms and the golden chain clasped arouses your neck, you knew Tauxolouve would make sure each and every fairy tale you harbour in your heart would come to life.

Comfort Films
List 7 comfort films and tag 7 people! I was tagged by @ladytauria
ohhh okay uh don't think this will be in a particular order? Anyway yeah I LOVE movies that have singing parts in them as you can see, I also haven't really watched anything new in years so it's uh a lot of things I watched when younger
1) Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
2) Anastasia
3) Strange Magic
4) Räuber Hotzenplotz (haha yeah this might even be like my #1 gosh I watched this so often as a child, this just made me think about Hui Boo but nope def not a comfort one ahhh second hand embarrassment was always so high while watching, same with Ice Age lol + anxiety driven high by it)
5) How to tame your Dragon (also an often rewatch, so much my dad told us he would switch it onto english because we spoke the dialog line for line and he did actually go through with that once lol, beautiful music)
6)Also like Barbie movies yeah, if I had to pick one hmm maybe the Diamond Castle or 12 princesses? Or maybe the one fairy movie where she doesn't have wings and if I remember never gained some even at the end? it's been years since I saw that one, especially because I couldn't find it again
7)Jurassic Park/World maybe? But only the first 4 I'd say
These are all so silly and innocent (Well besides the last one lol) but I guess that's why they are comfort movies? Hmmm I do tend to watch much more darker stuff usually, when I watch, I'm so bad at doing anything besides reading ao3 lol.
Anyway I'm tagging uuhhh
@ragnarokhound @zeroducks-2 @timmyjaybird @gerryrigged @cummandercold @benbamboozled and uuhhh @captainclovis

Happy New Year! Here's everything I watched and read in 2023
And also some misc. thoughts on the things that made an especially good, bad, or striking impression. If the thing is in purple, it was a rewatch! books are all rated out of five because there was a reasonable number of them. top five from each category are in the bottom for funsies.
*not including podcasts/dropout content. I'm up to date on make some noise, gamechanger, wbn, and d20 (mostly). I also watched the emily axford guest episodes and chapter 2 of candela obscura on CR
Movies
The Menu
Glass Onion
Romeo and Juliet (1996) (this is one of my fav movies of all time, I'll never get sick of it. just gorgeous top to bottom)
Rosaline (I went into this knowing I wouldn't like it and came out thinking it was just alright. lead actress is good, but I hate derivative Shakespeare works that don't understand the original story)
Hamilton
Tangled
Secret World of Arrietty
Honor Among Thieves (just a damn good movie, love the practical effects)
Mamma Mia!
Barbie and the Three Musketeers
The Three Musketeers (1993)
Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse
The Last Unicorn (rewatched this for the first time in at least a decade, what a gorgeous vibey fantasy film. something about the dark scenery and tone really sticks with me)
Nimona (thought Ballister was a great character and enjoyed the design choices for the world, a good piece of Knight (tm) media. however, I thought the animation was lacking and didn't think it deserved a best picture nom like a lot of people did. it was cute, not lifechanging)
The Green Knight (watch it)
80 for Brady (a request from my mom, surprisingly funny)
The Visit
Sweet Home Alabama (bad)
Barbie!
Sharkboy and Lavagirl
Pride and Prejudice 2005 (another one of my all time favs)
Sleeping Beauty
The Aristocats
La La Land
Red White and Royal Blue
The Princess and the Pauper
Barbie and the Three Musketeers (again)
Howl's Moving Castle
Girl Vs. Monster
10 Things I Hate About You
500 Days of Summer (made me cry, which I didn't expect. can you tell I had a joseph gordon levitt moment lol)
Get Out
Twilight
The Conjuring (I watch this every year, one of my fav horror movies)
Scooby Doo: The Witches Ghost
Kiki's Delivery Service
Barbie and the Twelve Dancing Princesses
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Love, Actually
Honor Among Thieves (again, but with my DnD party)
The Holiday (I mean. it's Jude Law)
The Boy and the Heron (holy fucking shit this was so good)
Asteroid City
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
In The Tall Grass
Books
Harrow the Ninth by Tamryn Muir: good! I fucking struggled at the beginning getting through but it paid off. (3.5/5)
The Falls by Joyce Carol Oates: a fun gothic romance/tragedy set in Niagra Falls which took an environmentalist angle I was not expecting at all. Picked it up at a Goodwill and enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. (4/5)
A Game of Thrones by GRRM: I mean, it's a classic. The way the plot unfolds at the end really is incredible, but from the first chapter it grips you. (4/5)
The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas: HOLY SHIT if you read one book because of me let it be this one, it is criminally underrated for how well known it is. It is thee action-adventure novel of all time, hysterically funny and easy to read. (5/5)
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern: I took a little dip into YA to bring some autumn vibes to my summer internship. Plot was bad, vibes came through. (2.5/5)
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte: fucking slaps!! anyone who thinks it isn't romantic is dead wrong, I found it much more engaging than Jane Eyre, the other Bronte novel I've read. (4.5/5)
Just Above My Head by James Baldwin: a gripping account of two black families before and during the civil rights movement, of which one son becomes a famous gospel singer. Julia, one of the daughters and a child evangelist, stuck with me long after I finished it (5/5)
Nona the Ninth by Tamryn Muir: enjoyed it more than HTN, Nona asking about her birthday present made me cry, as did Campal :( (4.5/5)
That Summer In Paris by Morley Callaghan: put me in a massive reading slump over a silly little Goodwill read, never have I been less entertained by what was essentially a book of entirely gossip about 1920s writers. (2/5)
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: read it immediately after ABOSAS, holds up in its entirety, particularly in the environmental descriptions (4/5)
A Clash of Kings by GRRM: I've already posted about this a ton but holy shit, it's slow getting there but the payoff is incredible. really excited to keep reading bc George absolutely sold me on this web of political and personal relationships. (4.5/5)
A Place Bewitched and Other Stories by Nikolai Gogol: the cap for the year, bleak Russian short stories about weird little tales. would hit harder during fall. (3/5)
Shows
The Last of Us (as good as people said it was. sold me on zombie media as someone who does not like zombie media)
TLOVM S2
You S4 (a decent ending, parts with Love Quinn were the best lolol)
Succession S4
Shadow and Bone S2
Partner Track (CUTE. wish netflix didn't cancel it)
Marvelous Mrs Maisel S5 (a letdown tbh)
Game of Thrones S1
BBC Musketeers (I had a big three musketeers phase this year; this was my fav adaptation I watched. a lot of heart and a lot of silly, I am very biased about it)
BC Strike
Bridgerton - Queen Charlotte (I watched this in French, had a miserable time)
The Terror
The Bear (twice)
The Summer I Turned Pretty S2 (steven and taylor!!!!!)
Legends of Tomorrow S1-5 (rewatching with Roommate)
Yellowjackets S1
Over The Garden Wall (I watch this every autumn)
Gilmore Girls, Seinfeld (continuously)
The X Files S1-2
Blue Eye Samurai (shockingly blunt and visceral in everything from it's depiction of racism to fully committing to animating a boner).
Unfinished: Fionna and Cake, the Fall of the House of Usher. we're working on it.
Top Five Movies (no rewatches):
5. 500 Days of Summer
4. Get Out
3. The Green Knight

My Top 10 Movies
Chosen based completely on personal preferences, emotional attachment, and life impact, listed in no particular order. Spoiler warning for the movies listed.
------
Tumblr media
The Sound of Music
Almost 3 hours long, but I was completely focused the whole movie even as a child. I used to sing along to every song and practiced Edelweiss on the piano because I thought it was the most beautiful song ever. Granted, I used to turn away from the the TV screen during “Something Good” because apparently my kid self had very little appreciation for romance. But re-watching the movie as an adult really changes your perspective and I have even more appreciation for the different parts of this movie.
Tumblr media
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
The whole Harry Potter film series was such a big part of my childhood that there was absolutely no way I wouldn’t list at least one movie. I decided on the first one not only because it started the whole thing, but also because it is the one Harry Potter movie I can recite all the lines for from memory. I watch all Harry Potter movies every year during Christmas with my sister. By virtue of being first, the first movie just happens to be the one we’ve repeated the most.
Tumblr media
You are the Apple of My Eye
那些年,我們一起追的女孩
I first saw this movie when I was in college. I think, perhaps, it was the perfect age to watch this because everything was so relatable and so close to my reality that everything just hit that much harder. The story is beautiful and realistic. I just think this was so, so precious. When I’m feeling emotional, I love re-watching this movie and shedding a few tears here and there.
Tumblr media
The Kite Runner
I wasn’t even in high school yet when I first saw this film. I remember the rape scene leaving such a big impact on me that “boys can get raped too” and “children can get raped too” was my biggest take away from this movie for the longest time. It wasn’t until I re-watched the movie in my last year of high school that the movie really left an impression on me as a story/film as a whole instead of just that one scene. The ending still gets me every single time.
Tumblr media
Enter the Dragon
龍爭虎鬥
One of my first foreign-language films was Enter the Dragon. My dad is a big Bruce Lee fan and when the age of DVDs came, he bought a bunch of Bruce Lee movie DVDs and we all watched them together as a family. Enter the Dragon was probably the one we watched the most times. It was my first time having to read subtitles. I remember having such a hard time keeping up with the speed as a kid. In fact, watching Bruce Lee movies really helped me learn to read fast because otherwise I couldn’t understand the dialogue.
Tumblr media
Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper
Barbie movies were a big part of my childhood. The Princess and the Pauper was my favorite among all of them and still is to this day. I will never tire of the music from this movie. I still remember all the songs. I even still remember the bloopers scenes they showed at the end of the movie.
Tumblr media
Whisper of the Heart
耳をすませば
My favorite Ghibli movie is, without a doubt, Whisper of the Heart. Music and writing, two of my favorite things both in one movie. The lead girl is still one of the most relatable characters in any movie for me and maybe that’s why it is very close to my heart. No matter how great the other Ghibli films are and how much I also love them, Whisper of the Heart is dear to me because of my emotional attachment to it.
Tumblr media
Haba-baba-doo! Puti-puti-poo!
A childhood staple, I remember watching this movie so many times as a kid. We have no CDs or DVDs of it, then and now. I only ever saw this when I happened to be watching TV when they showed this movie. But I still saw it enough times for it to stick with me until adulthood. I remember watching this with my siblings, my cousins, and our house helpers. I’ve watched this at our house, my grandma’s house, my aunt’s house, and even at a hotel room. A lot of chaos, comedy, and good feels.
Tumblr media
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
If I associated the Harry Potter films with Christmas, then New Year was for Narnia. I liked The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe so much that I remember being not so impressed with the second and third movie that followed. As I grow older, I found that I have more and more appreciation for the later movies, but the first one does indeed have a special place in my heart.
Tumblr media
Hercules
Another childhood film. To be honest, it wasn’t until after I entered college that I revisited this movie. I knew I enjoyed it as a kid but by then I didn’t even know the story anymore, just the songs that I kept hearing, as you do any other Disney song. I loved it so much on my re-watch that I kept repeating it, until my dad saw me watching it one day and commented how I used to memorize all the lines Hercules said as a kid. I don’t remember, but if dad is to be believed, I guess my taste in movies haven’t changed at all since then.
------
Other movies I love, still in no particular order.
Joseph: King of Dreams was shown in my elementary school and I have loved it since.
White Chicks was a favorite to watch with my cousins at their house and good for laughs.
Rurouni Kenshin is, in my opinion, the best manga/anime live-action adaptation ever.
Heneral Luna is a great historical film with perfectly modernized dialogue, to appeal to a younger audience without destroying its essence.
High School Musical was a huge part of my youth and still a great film musical to watch even as an adult.

i no longer own pink.
yesterday i watched the barbie movie with my friend and, naturally, we wanted to dress up for the occasion.
as i sifted through my closet, i was hit with the realization that i simply don't own pink clothes anymore.
as a young girl, pink was my favorite color.
shirts, jackets, dresses, accessories - you name it. along with my love for disney, princesses, hello kitty, and of course: barbies.
i was such a doll girl.
i was blessed to have a barbie dream house and remote-controlled pink corvette in my collection of toys gifted over several christmases and birthdays.
i remember making little stop-motion videos of my dolls playing house or school and diy-ing more items for them to enjoy.
i never drew on them with marker or cut their hair in obscure ways.
i took care of them,
and i'd like to think they took care of me too.
when we were really young, my sister and i were very close
- back when being young meant your sibling was your best friend and spending time with them was free of conflict and true misunderstanding.
once we reached the age where our interests began to diverge and early indicators of the versions of ourselves we would eventually grow into finally emerged, i suddenly felt alone.
i remember at this initial shift, i had coped through my dolls
- too young to articulate how my first encounter with the realities of growing up made me feel.
but now that i'm older,
i can finally give it an earnest shot.
growing up is thinking your sister hated you because she didn't want to play dolls with you anymore, then realizing it was just because she was discovering other things in the world to be experienced.
it is thinking your sister didn't love you anymore because she stopped saying it and no longer let you hug her, then realizing it was just because there are other ways to express you love someone.
growing up is realizing you actually had a beautiful childhood
-that the things that forced you to mature too soon had obstructed vour memory of what it felt to be a kid.
because you grew up with an older sister and both your parents
and even had two grandparents in the house.
you celebrated birthdays and christmases and had gatherings with extended family where you got to spend time with multiple generations of family members.
growing up is realizing that on average, parents have eighteen years with their child.
that's 18 birthdays, summers, and holidays together before you leave and truly embark into the real world.
and that is a shorter amount of time than we realized while we were living through it.
growing up is realizing that that was why it was difficult for your mother to release you from her embrace when you left for college.
growing up is acknowledging that you could've expressed more gratitude, could've complained less or acted less annoyed when your mother wanted to take photos of and with you.
growing up is realizing the depth of the quote from the film:
"we mothers stand still so our daughters can look back and see how far they've come."
growing up is realizing how similar you are to your mom and finding more and more parallels between you and her as you get older.
growing up is looking through the photo albums on your mom's facebook page because she uploaded most of your childhood memories there and realizing you inherited your love for documentation from her.
it is realizing you should take more photos with your family while you still can (and having a genuine desire to do so) because you understand now how sacred time is and how precious they are to you.
to grow up is to realize the concept of growing up.
as we get older, time feels as though it passes faster because we become increasingly conscious of its value and its loss.
it is to grieve the past versions of ourselves while simultaneously stepping into our next one.
growing up is watching the barbie movie and its message piercing like a needle through the fabric of your adulthood, its thread coated with bittersweet nostalgia.
but it does not damage you with its puncture.
it gently pokes around,
as if tickling your inner child to wake it,
reminding you of how it felt to grow up as a young girl playing with her barbie dolls.
it is crying at the movie theater with absolutely no shame.
it is smiling at the young girl and her mother in the row in front of you when you walked in the theater and seeing the lone elderly woman in the row behind you who also sat through the credits, for you all came to watch the same film.
it is walking out in your skirt and the pink hair bow your friend let you borrow to take selfies with the movie poster before grabbing food for the post-movie debrief.
it is getting a message from a family member who happened to be at that same mall, and her coming by with your niece whom you haven't seen in years to say hello.
it is realizing she is ten now.
it is remembering when she was born.
remembering playing with her as she grew into a toddler.
it is remembering that you gave her and her sister your dolls once you 'grew out of them' at a certain age.
it is then remembering that you left your three-story barbie dream house in the trash room when you moved out of the apartment you grew up in because it was too big to conveniently give to them, and had a lot of missing or broken parts by then.
it is having a memory of the house with its layer of collected dust and not remembering what happened to the pink, remote-controlled corvette.
it is wishing you had kept at least one doll.
it is realizing the same thing applied to your childhood clothes: given to younger family members, donated, or (for the really worn-down pieces) simply thrown out.
growing up is realizing why you don't own pink anymore.
and it is wanting to go and change that.

what do you think the best ariel barbie/doll out there is? which design? i often feel like they dont quite capture her especially with the modern ones
Tumblr media
This is such a great question! It completely depends on how specific your question is regarding the word best- are we talking best design, best molded face, best generation of Ariel, best company that produced her in doll form, etc etc etc?
For nostalgic reasons, my favorite Ariel doll is the first one I ever owned! She's from the Disney Sparkling Princess line released by Mattel in 2001 and features the pink ballgown from the film. I cannot overstate the importance of this Barbie to me. I first saw The Little Mermaid when I was five, which was around the time of this doll's release, from a copy of a VHS tape I rented from my public library in Covina, California. At the time, The Little Mermaid was in the Disney vault- so I literally couldn't watch the film (I remember asking the sales representatives at Target if they had a copy, since Snow White had been out of the vault at the time but none of the other Disney Princess movies) unless I had rented it from the library and no one else had checked it out. The film (obviously) had a profound impact on me and I wanted more than anything to own it. I had no merchandise around it, and the two girl cousins I had and my sister both hated Ariel so I pretty much had no chance...until I saw this doll in Target! I remember being so torn between this doll and the Cinderella one in the line. Cinderella was in her pink dress, which had been the only time a Barbie of hers had been released in the dress her mother had owned, and that was and is my favorite Disney look of all time that's so special and dear to me. Merchandise of Cinderella in that look was also incredibly rare and it was tugging on my heart strings...however! Ariel in her pink dress was almost as rare, and I had just seen The Little Mermaid and was going through my Ariel phase (I had seen Cinderella two or three years prior and had been mad about her for years, too) and my favorite look of Ariel's was of her in the pink dress! So I ended up going with Ariel and it was the only doll of her I had owned as a child.
Nostalgia aside, I actually think the best Ariel's did come out from my childhood though? Like, two years later, Mattel released another Ariel which I think might be the prettiest Ariel doll I've ever seen with such an enchanting outfit. They matched her portions perfectly, with her rounded forehead, clear eyes, and distinct lip shape. All the Ariel dolls from about 2000-2003 simply don't miss though. The Disney Store dolls were so beautiful. The standard version from the early 2000s, while not distinctly Ariel, is still so charming and lovely. I love all the variations they did too- the magic hair Ariel, the Masquerade Ariel, the ballerina Ariel, to name a few. Overall, I think the 90s/early 2000s of the Mattel wave handled Ariel the best. Objectively speaking, the 1997 dolls were probably the best. The Wedding Ariel, Valentine's Day Ariel, the Towns Dress Ariel, and the Babysitter Ariel I reblogged recently CARRIED- not to mention the iconic Tropical Splash series. I want to own all the original Tyco releases, for collector purposes, and I do genuinely think they capture something of the universe in a great way. But I definitely would have to go with the 90s/early 2000s Mattel dolls as the best Ariel ones, with my favorites being the 2001 Sparkling Series I mentioned for Nostalgic reasons and for design purposes, I really love both the 1997 wedding and babysitter Ariel!

hiii I got tagged again by @kazoologist to answer some questions about myself :)))
Do you make your bed? When I get home, but I always forget in the mornings
Favourite number? 67 and 8. No idea why, it’s the vibe
What’s your job? Right now I’m still trying to get one TwT. Other than that I’m studying
If you could go back to school, would you? I dunno, technically I’m still studying, but I guess I’d go back for my friends. It’s just so easy to hang out with them during free periods
Can you parallel park? Not yet, but hopefully soon
Do you think Aliens are real? It’s probable but I don’t believe in the Area 51 conspiracy type stuff
Can you drive a manual car? Also not yet, but hopefully soon, since I am in the process of getting my license (have I already complained how expensive it is? No??? I have to pay like 4000€ QwQ (normal price ik but still expensive))
Guilty pleasure? Those 'cringey' 2010s songs, like Fight Song. Idk why but there’s nothing more effective for cheering me up. I also love watching Bollywood dance scenes, the music and the energy!! Nothing compares for me. I also consume an unhealthy amount of Yogurette. Also (mostly passively) engaging in some petty internet drama for funsies! So entertaining
Tattoos? None yet! But I might get a flying Shrike tattooed
Favourite colour? Blue and pink (in Barbie movie style)
Favourite type of music? Oooh I dunno, I like those 2000s party songs but also songs like The Adults are talking (no idea what genre that is) and some Bollywood songs. I’ve also recently taken a liking to German music again
Do you like Puzzles? Depends, I like jigsaw puzzles just fine, but others not so much, I’m not much of a riddler
Favourite childhood sport? Zumba (type of choreographed dancing) and fencing. Fencing was exhausting but so fun, sadly I didn’t like the trainer
Do you talk to yourself? Not really
First thing you wanted to be when growing up? Princess, because I could’ve had all the horses I wanted. Also Egyptologist. No idea wich one came first
What movies do you adore? Tough, I don’t really watch many movies anymore. But I like the Top Gun movies, watched the second part in the cinema, which was awesome and the Batman Unlimited movies since I like the artstyle in those. I also like Jawan (2023), an Indian movie and one of the best films I’ve watched recently. SRK and his gang of 6 women rightening the Gouvernement with a bit of found family themes and accidental child acquisition. Some very heart wrenching scenes but also plenty of fun action, some dance scenes and SRK looking hot as ever in his father/son double role. There are some scenes that could be very triggering tho, same for the next movie I like Happy New Year (2014), although this movies is more of a comedy and there are less sad scenes. Also Mohini is one of my fave characters I love her
Idk who to tag sorrrryyy

Not so random review: The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Tumblr media
You'll be hooked on the brothers!
Not so random because today is March the 10th which can mean only one thing…it's Mar10 day! Though he had appearances in the early 80's in Nintendo titles such as Donkey Kong and Wrecking Crew, it was the 1985 Super Mario Bros. that really catapulted Mario and Nintendo in general into the stratosphere. Their popularity continues to this day, with 2023's utterly charming Super Mario Wonder being another smash hit success. But I'm choosing to celebrate Mar10 Day 2024 by finally sitting down and watch his 2023 motion picture epic; The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Given the $1.36b performance at the box office, I was apparently one of about 6 people who didn't see this in the cinema at the time but it's time to wrong that right. Though, it's funny how that performance still wasn't enough to be the leading film of the year. *Shakes white gloved fist at Barbie*
Tumblr media
I don't quite remember the general reaction this had when it was first announced. I suppose it would have been one of surprise given the…interesting adaptation we had back in 1993 which seemingly made Nintendo swear off such things. The part I do remember though is when the voice cast was revealed and every man, woman and child losing their collective shit at the idea of Chris Pratt voicing Mario. I suppose it wouldn't have been so bad if this was a character that had been played by lots of different people over time but Charles Martinet had been THE voice of Mario for over 30 years so he had become synonymous with the character. I can see how Martinet's portrayal might be seen as gimmicky or grating to be done over a feature length movie but it does smack of them just wanting to throw a bunch of Hollywood talent at the thing in favour of more traditional voice actors because that's what everyone else seems to do with this animated movies.
Tumblr media
For what it's worth, Pratt is…fine? I have no qualms with most of the cast. Charlie Day I think was a great bit of casting, as limited a role as it is in terms of screen time, he helps sell the somewhat cowardly nature of Green Mario that I appreciate is still an eduring character trait having being such a prominent thing in titles such as the Mario & Luigi series. Though, it's easy to be a scardey cat when you have villains proclaiming to be 'the mustard of your doom'. I did forget that Jack Black was voicing Bowser until the sharp pivot his character took part way in. When the movie starts we see him laying waste to the Snow Kingdom as the native penguins ineffectively fight back with their snowball based offense. It makes for a great opening setpiece, really selling the intense threat that Bowser poses whilst also mixing in some comedy. Which is partly what I think they had in mind when Bowser breaks out into song later on professing his love for Princess Peach and states he aims to marry her. I was a little unsure on this shift at first as it does diminish the threat somewhat but this is a kids film after all so it helps to have something dumb in there for them. Plus I suppose it does give his character an extra edge than just being generic evil bad man. And it helps contextualize the existing game elements into this environment, there's a reason why Bowser is going after Peach other than just because without it we'd have no game.
Tumblr media
Re-contextualizing is the order of the day throughout the whole film as it really is fan servicey as all hell but tries to make it so it's not just fan service for fan service sake. Just like those 'turn your brain off at the door' movies, fan service is good from time to time and we there's obviously there's wide appeal here in seeing this beloved game franchise adapted to the big screen but fan service can sometimes feel a little bit like some waving some keys in your face. Here though there's reasons behind some of the things we see in the game to help explain why they're happening in this apparent normal world. Like, why are Mario and Luigi in these bright outfits and wearing white gloves to their plumbing gigs? It's a gimmick, a calling card of sorts. Here's a part of the Mushroom Kingdom that looks like something of the games that Mario needs to run through, but that's because he's in training. On that last point, this ultimately is a really by the numbers movie, the kind of story you might see in a fantasy sword & sorcery movie where an outsider is drafted in to come slay the big bad that's threatening to destroy the world, complete with the aforementioned training montage with a backing soundtrack of Bonnie Tyler's 'Holding Out For a Hero', or at least a new recording of it for some reason. That's just one of various licensed songs that appear in the film which can feel a little out of place given that most of the movie has the obligatory tracks from the various games, down to such obscure gems as the DK Rap of all things. The story goes that Mario & Luigi are two down on their luck Brooklyn plumbers hoping to catch their big break whilst striving out of their own, with Mario facing fears of inadequacy as his family lament him giving up a steady job to follow a pipe dream, doubly so for potentially dragging his brother down with him. Not only that, but Mario is also apparently seeking validation from his own father who seems particularly dismissive of this whole venture. Who would have expected such depth from a Mario movie?! During a city wide flood, Mario spies a chance to play the hero as he and Luigi head downtown to check it out, figuring the source of the problem is in the depths of the city sewers. It's here they come across a strange green pipe that the two brothers get sucked through before being split up and deposited in separate parts of a strange new world; Luigi landing in the Dark Lands and Mario in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Tumblr media
Mario is promptly lead to Princess Peach by our friendly neighourhood Toad who suggest she'll be able to help find Luigi, only for Mario to have to sneak in the castle before inadvertently attracting the attention of pretty much every guard in sight. Peach doesn't seem concerned by this random intruder in her castle though and agrees to help, provided he can pass the training course first. I was a little iffy on this at first but they do allude to Peach's mysterious past and question why she's the only human around here so I suppose it's natural that she would see some solidarity when another one shows up. I might be reading too much into that though as I'm not sure where you'd go with that as a story thread in future movies.
It's hard to be skeptical though when you get swept up in the joys of seeing all of your old favourites beautifully animated, all the characters, powerups, enemies, right down to the last question block. Including my favourite…
Tumblr media
Baby Mario and Luigi! Given my deep nostalgia for the SNES, Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island, I did mark out a bit when these guys popped up in flash back. Yoshi's Island by the way remains one of the great video game intros of all time. Words truly fail to properly capture the majesty of a wizard koopa committing a drive by kidnapping on a stork whilst a music box lullaby plays in the background. I think that's what this movie is always going to come back to, if you've ever appreciated the Mario series at any point in your life you're going to get a kick out of this. It's a simple re-telling of Mario vs Bowser but serves as the groundwork for what will doubtless be an ongoing franchise, an origin story to branch out from. Aside from the teaser in the post credits, you also have Peach looking to the starry night sky at one point and talking of all the different 'galaxies' that are out there. Presumably we're a way off that though, you don't normally go into space until around the 4th movie. Luckily, we wont have too long to wait to find out what's next for Mario and Friends as just today Nintendo announced the next movie is due out in April 2026. Presumably they just need to find a Japanese movie they can re-skin and call Super Mario Bros. Movie 2.

"healing your inner child" but the healing is not having internalized misogyny. For me.
Like i was approximately 8 years old when i got into my edgy phase of drawing angst, blood and axes everywhere but i was always convinced i hated pink and "girly" things because you know. Society. And it's so funny looking back
me but younger: i hate barbie cuz she's blonde and pink 🤮 (literally had 1st panic attack n cried cuz older sister wanted to watch a barbie film one night, the sexism was strong with this one💀)
me now whenever I can't think of anything to watch with my sister: so do you wanna watch a barbie movie?(personal fave is 12 dancing princesses)
Me but younger: sofia the 1st is a dumb show because Sofia is A MARY SUE !!(would not even be an issue if it was a boy) AND TOO YOUNG TO BE A DISNEY PRINCESS!!(have you ever heard of having fun also you're like the same age and also you don't even care about disney at all) AND SHE'S UGLY!! (ok the show is a lil ugly tbh but i had beef with that fictional child)
me deciding that now is the best time to watch a show for 7 year olds despite not even being nostalgic for it: YOU GO SOFIA WOOO FUCK THEM UP!! (first episode is also coincidentally about sexism WOW!! also i now have an emotional attachment to this fictional child. I have watched the special and 1 episode. Help)

Hey. I think your Wish Me Away work is incredible and I wondered if you can add more ?
This was so long ago and I am so sorry it took this long to answer! But I will gladly add more!!
• Selina absolutely spoils Marietta, which surprises even herself, but she can't help but dote on her kitten.
• She is also fiercely protective of Mari which is why a lot of gossip magazines and tabloids immediately thought Marietta was her biological daughter.
• Bruce buys her and Marietta matching outfits a lot. Selina says they're tacky but she always wears them.
• When Marietta first called Selina, Mama, she cried for an hour straight while hugging her little kitten to her and refused to let go. This was also around the time that both Selina and Bruce decided they wanted to get married.
• Joker is conflicted about Marietta, on one hand he believes she is Bruce's and Selina's biological child and thus another distraction in his and Bruce's relationship and just another reason for Bruce to fight against his true self. On the other hand he finds her hilarious and just a tad, line just the tiniest bit, not even that visible really, just a smidgen, endearing.
• With their whole "rivalry" thing, Riddler of course told Oswald all about the child and Penguin loves the whole thing. He loves how it gets under Ed's skin but he also loves how it helps him get out of his own head sometimes. It helps him mellow out a little, his brain doesn't torment him on the absolute perfections of everything he does, he gets to act like a child and just...be, and that's why Oswald wants to meet the little "terror."
• All the siblings have movie marathons but they have special specific movie marathons that they have with just Marietta.
Dick: Disney + Looney Toons + Care Bears movies + Power Rangers
Jason: Ghibli + Collectible Classics + Don Bluth + Any Kenneth Branagh film
Tim: Scooby Doo (any and all) + Danny Phantom + Magic School Bus (yes he will sit there and watch every episode with her fight me) + Pokémon
Cass: Barbie + The Princess Bride + The Addams Family (all versions) + Winx Club + Pucca + Over The Moon
Duke: Martin Mystery + My Life As A Teenage Robot + Sonic X + SpongeBob + Courage The Cowardly Dog
Damian: The 10th Kingdom + Planet Earth + Tokyo Mew Mew + How To Train Your Dragon
Bonus
Steph: Totally Spies + Strawberry Shortcake + Kim Possible
Babs: Bill Nye The Science Guy + Angelina Ballerina
Most of these stay the same as she grows up but most change and the lists do get longer
• Local Goons are terrified of the toddler, every kidnapping attempt, every hostage situation, Marietta always gets out of her restraints
• Marietta does take ballet when she's older and her whole family does their best to make it to her recitals. None more than Cass.
