I've no idea, i messed up on my calculator and dont have the pactience to go back over it

Currently Stingray and Thunderbirds. and worst witch. its always worst witch

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

Jabberjay-ded (128 vs 4 comments lol) Little Wizard, The Broken Hand mirror, Mildred's Monstrous Misadventures, (ah yeah witching kind!) and I saw Seven Idiots.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Fanfic.net dosnt let me reply any more??? but I do try to. even if its just a key smash and a thankyou. or if its an emoji spam i emoji spam back. I love those.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Hm. The closest ones I could think of are Death's acquaintance and In grief we bake. I don't tend to do agnsty endings. even the sad ish ones are kind hopeful.

EDIT: JABBERYJAYED! I forgot!? litreally a hunger games fic ends up in devistation?? fool.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I couldnt narrow it down so top 2: I saw 7 Dogs and Christmas Cards

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Onlya few times in the past. two of those times were Worst witch ship trolls and just deleted them. one was my fault, i got uppity with an 'UPDATE NOW' comment and user just went a few my other fics being rude. againn deleted.

9. Do you write smut?

write yes. post no. (not yet-!) :o

10. Do you write crossovers?

yes. Ive have a good half a dozen under my belt and a couple in the works.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of

angain no not that i know of.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No but I would count @teapotteringabout @kiwi-collideoscope and Princess Sammi as , the amount i've bouced ideas about with them.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Mary Poppins and Bert. the OTP before i knew what the internet was.

15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Froot, SEASICK and Cherrytree Carol. plus a bunch of WW ones. I keep picking them up but i feel like they might be left on the shelf a little longer.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue and character voices. I also love mixing humour in too, even just a little sprinkle into sad bits and I think i do that quite well.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Plot bunnies. and not finishing current WIPS. Ive made a mountain of improvement on that frount but yeah posting chapters before before the fics even 50% done. To the point ive sequeals to fics that are only two lines of an epic.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Massivise kudos who can do that. not my forte. The closest I've come is writing the odd burst of ASL and BSL for Unshackled and Chest Compressions, and a pinch of welsh for Lucretia’s Baller but as yet Hypothetical Birthday Cake.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Corpse Bride (2005). a sad little fic for a le sad victor van dort.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

Ever? Probably have to Mildred's Montorus adventures. but Your mother and Mine's got a special place in my heartjust cos family and the catharisis .

cosmic - red velvet 💫

initial: high expectations ofc bc it’s red velvet. from the previews it seems likes the album leans more synth/dreamy which i’m a huuge fan of. cosmic itself has an almost 60/70s europop influence (reminiscent of abba even though they also sound nothing alike) which is sooo fun. my favorite rv tts are feel my rhythm + peekaboo + my favorite album is birthday so i’m excited to see where this release ranks among them 🤍

cosmic: the mv was phenomenal. i love story focused mvs. the building tension and fear contrasted with the bright imagery + the lyrics talking about being fated together but only for a moment.. brilliant. as for the song itself. the chorus hits so well each time. there's this overwhelming wistfulness and desire and longing to just make things last a little longer. the lyrics, melody, + bass all push towards this idea of an ill-fated meeting that they're just desperate to cling to for the little spot of goodness it has. the brief bridge and wendy's build into the final chorus + joy's ad libs. it's so phenomenal.

sunflower: super heavy bass. pretty pre-chorus. it’s a lot heavier and darker than i expected from the title. lyrically i feel like it could be a part of the cosmic storyline, too, just from a specific perspective, or at a specific moment. lately ive only been into lighter music, so i find it kind of overwhelming, but when im able to listen to music again normally i think ill really love it. it sounds perfect for late summer 🌻

last drop: the overall sound suits wendy so well. it has a nice dreamy r&b-ish chorus. i really love the ending, from the spoken lines forward. it’s nice that they’re so committed to the cosmic concept bc it sets them up for beautiful lyrics + they’ve really delivered

love arcade: cute music box opening. she’s so cute and peppy. reminds me of some of their previous summer tracks bc of the playfulness + background sounds. the mini bridge part is super fun. lyrically deviates from the cosmic concept, but it still connects bc the idea of playing a game that they’ve already won is 1. v rv-core + 2. definitely in line with a major theme of the cosmic mv <3

bubble: dreamy synthpop ilyyyy always. what a dreamy step down into the chorus? this song feels a lot less structured than the others + much more flowing. evening car drive music for sure. i like how they use wendy’s voice as a transition to brighter parts of the song. a joy + yeri city pop track would be sooo pretty with their voices and vibes

night drive: the prettiest song omg. their vocals + the production are so beautiful. a really pretty closer. reading the lyrics it’s a song for the members? about everything they’ve been through + still being together ;;🤍 i hope they’ll be a special performance video for this one

overall

a lot of songs feel like a modern iteration of songs they’ve done in the past. not in a remake way, just like a callback to their previous projects, which is soo fun for a tenth anniversary album. it doesn’t feels recycled, but like a matured sister.

joy’s vocals stood out to me most on this album. ive always loved all the members’ voices, but ive steadily been liking her more + more and she really shines here

i love that all the songs are really beautiful lyrically too. it’s something i forget to check a lot with kpop songs, but these stand out so nicely + enhances the songs even more

cosmic + bubble + night drive are my favs rn. i think cosmic will get the most replays. i’m excited to see their stages + listen to the album a few more times when i’m more interested in music and see how my feelings grow on the other tracks too ^^

So you don't think that the reason Donald and Della went to go live with scrooge was because their parents died- but do you think that they are alive in current day?Because it seems kind of complicated to think about because even though scrooge is like a bajillion years old Hortense and Quackmore could easily be in their 70's(which isn't that old)seeing as they have children around36-40yrs old.But also they could have gotten themselves into some sort of wack Mc Duck situation-deaged-had don+dell

i don't! because of scrooge's line in the matilda ep where he's like 'why didn't you call one of your other kids' i think hortense is still alive. and since i pretend gideon and rumpus are both half-brothers they wouldn't count cuz scrooge was yelling at both of his parents

ok for my own personal canon this is what ive done with hortense n quackmore, its convoluted but it works for me:

hortense born in 1876 still

scrooge makes the castle magic and immortalizes everyone living in it around ~1900 (i dont remember the exact year i used)

hortense stays in the castle for a while cuz shes never lived in a castle thats badass. just enjoys it

around 1920?ish? she and matilda finally leave for duckburg. physically hortense is about 25

thats when she meets quackmore who is a little younger but around the same age, they bicker and bond or whatever and then eventually she tells him about castle mcduck and the immortality and of course he's curious so they go back to scotland together

(his parents are currently not around because they were magically sent to the future. for now he thinks theyre dead so he has no family so why not go with the hot scottish girl to her magical home?)

they fuck around for a while 'cause since they're stuck in the castle they're still young and neither feels ready to be a parent so they're just gonna be a young couple for a while. having young couple shenanigans

around 1950, quackmore learns that his parents have returned and they go to visit them for a few years. his parents are only a little bit older than him and its weird. his parents have two more kids

quackmore n hortense go back to castle mcduck and talk about maybe trying to have kids of their own

takes them a lot of tries. the immortality magic might have something to do with that. its a struggle

lots of consulting with doctors on their free day away from the castle

but as long as theyre still young theyre gonna keep trying! and finally it happens in late 1982

hortense lays two eggs but theyre not, like. it doesnt seem like theyre growing. they get worried the babies might be stillborn or something but then quackmore suggests its the magic so they bring the babies to duckburg and BOOM: donald and della hatch. so they decide to stay in duckburg cuz theyre worried the kids wont grow if they stay in the castle

and then they age normally so theyre liiiike. late 60s? and quackmore's parents are still alive and his brother and sister arent too far from him in age and theyre alive too! (well no his sister died like 6-7 years after giving birth to gladstone)

matilda's journey involved more going out and exploring the world but then coming back so she wouldnt age and thats why shes physically like...65 at the most (in the show) where hortense is physically 70-75 and thats why webby calls matilda the youngest. (rumpus and gideon are also in their 70s at that point)

so tl;dr hortense and quackmore live in castle mcduck together for a long time and just have fun together until quackmore's parents come out of a time rift and then quackmore's like wait maybe i DO want kids so they struggle to have kids because of the castle mcduck magic but finally it happens and they leave the castle so the kids can grow normally

(you might be thinking, carro why didnt you just have quackmore be born in the 50s and he and hortense dont meet until the 70s so theres less of a huge amount of time where theyre not parents? well because i wanted to have his family go through some time-related nonsense as well.

also 'carro how do you explain the old timey photos of quackmore and hortense as old people?' those were taken at an Old Timey Photo Booth at an amusement park. they both thought itd be funny to see what they would've looked like had they lived their lives normally)

i think the only person ive ever wanted to steal from was some lady on tiktok who ordered rare pc’s and showed tiktok and then just resold them at the same or more value. she showed a jungkook pc from a japanese release if i remember correctly and it cost her $400 and when she resold it she made profit?? like HELLO??? apparently that was what the pc collectors would call ‘a steal’ in regards to how much she paid for it.

oooh i just googled pepco apparently they own some big-ish stores here. it sounds p straight forward!! plenty of training videos i imagine 🥲 friends at work are always a good idea but apparently i have what my mother calls a ‘fuck off face’ and... she’s not wrong. not at all. it morphs into disgust easily when i garner unwanted attention. but it’s not intentional anymore i practiced for when i used to walk to school bc i hated people and the randos bc they’re so creepy when i’m clearly in uniform and underage ewwwww blergh 😫

i initially started writing how i do bc i used to love how fancy my nan’s writing looked so when she passed away and i was old enough to understand how to write in cursive i just did that. my r’s and i’s are dangerously similar but no one complains so :D

Year End Writer’s Roundup 2020

This seems like a fun way for me to think back, and appreciate the creativity that I found at the end of 2019 and thoroughly enjoyed in 2020. I’ve said it before, but I went 7 years without writing fics, and being able to write again has been amazing. 

I’ll tag everyone who hasn’t done this yet! It’d be really interesting to hear about other people’s fics, as well. :3

Word count for published fics: 52,771 A lot more than I thought with my slow-ish process of writing. :’)

Word count for unpublished fics: 17,547 Because I work on multiple fics at a time, writing whatever I feel like in that moment! That’s why I got a lot of fics started a bit and even more ideas listed (88 right now). 

Fic I spent the most time on: Something Happened On The Way To Heaven (But We'll Get There) as a whole is obviously the thing taking most of my time. And (No More) Afterglow aka part 4 of the series took me 7 months, so there’s that... Almost lost faith with it but now I’m writing part 5 with new energy!

Fic I spent the least time on: All the 4 Tumblr ficlets mentioned above. 

Favorite thing I wrote:  - SHOTWTHBWGT is my passion project, so I’ll say that, but I can find something good in all of my fics. - Honorary mention goes to Second Shower because writing that made me like the first Shower a lot more! I still don’t understand how it is my most popular fic, going by amount of kudos, if we ignore SHOTWTHBWGT... but you go fandom :D - And of course I gotta mention the fanzine, what a cool project! 

Writing Goals For Next Year: - Keep having fun with writing, don’t make it a chore or a must. - Worry less about what people might think of the non-Trikey fics and just do what you want. - Finish at least 2 parts of SHOTWTHBWGT. (Obviously I’d like to publish more than two parts, but if I make no promises about that, I don’t have to break them...) - Finish the few fics that are already really close to being finished. :’D

Fic I want to rewrite/expand on:  - If I had more free time, I might rewrite the first 3 parts of SHOTWTHBWGT just because I don’t like the formatting anymore. I think my text is a lot cleaner and easier to read in part 4 and in my other more recent fics. - I’m thinking of doing a second part for Digging. Basically it would be a rewrite of Fresh Meat.  A Kind Of Magic might get a second part, as well, because I really like the versions of Michael and Trevor I’m creating. 

Share a bit of a WIP or story idea you’re working on:  Just say a number and I will... But here’s one that I won’t reveal too much about!

Michael had learned from a very young age that whenever he thought he was doing well, life had the habit of kicking him in the balls for daring to imagine he deserved to be happy.

And apparently, once again, life thought that he had been too fortunate. 

It was another movie night. Those had become a habit of theirs after they realized that they didn’t really know what else to do on dates — although every now and then, Trevor suggested a cheerful night of murdering methhead bikers or his other enemies, which didn’t really read as a date to Michael.

After they made their way to the back row of the theater, Michael carrying a box of popcorn, he wrapped his arm around Trevor’s shoulder like usual.

Trevor leaned into him. “So what’s it about?” Trevor asked, motioning to the screen that was currently forbidding masturbation in the theatre, a rule that Michael and Trevor technically hadn’t broken. 

“Leo gets mauled by a bear,” Michael answered with a grin. "I don't know. I tried to steer clear of spoilers."

“Sounds great,” Trevor snorted and stuffed his face with popcorn before the movie even started. 

Michael loved taking Trevor to the movies, even if Trevor wasn’t as big of a fan as he was. Trying to figure out which movies they both might like wasn't an easy task, but he had managed quite a few times. 

Not this time.

Other thoughts: This thing also originally had a question about the favorite thing I’ve read this year. Unfortunately/ironically I haven’t had time to read as much fics since I started writing. But this fandom is full of talented writers and artists, much love! <3 And I’ll get around to reading the 60+ GTA fics on my bookmarks one of these days... :’D

I wanna thank anyone who leaves kudos and comments to fics, you’re amazing. ;_; I should leave more comments, too. Maybe a new year’s resolution?

Can Brian Bendis write everything?

Between story, and downright FUN, this is a great book.  Team books are hard to do well, if for no other reason, because of the characterizations. 

Multiple characters mean multiple personalities, and some of those will always get underdeveloped in relationship to the team, as the writer invariably has favorites  Unless…

What we are seeing with LSH is development of characters from across the spectrum. Every book has development of some of the characters, even if they’re not directly involved in the story. This is a far cry from what you see in other books.

Add to this Ryan Sook’s breakdowns, and Wade von Grawbadger’s inks, and you get a pretty package, all tied up in a big bow. More importantly, this is a story with a legacy reaching back 60 years, and is being truly refreshed for a new audience.

This isn’t the Legion I read in 1967, but it’s damned good!

This sums up exploring the World, any world, during a Zombie Apocalypse. Especially when those with Super Powers have been turned into Super Zombies.

So, we pick up with Peter Parker, Forge, Karla Sofen (Moonstone), Valeria and Franklin Richards, a Flerkin named Chewie, and the reprogrammed Sentinel lovingly called ‘Nana’, moving from defendable place to defensible area, seeking a ‘safe place’. Somewhere they can rest for more than one night… if that is possible.

Always realizing the next tree could be hiding a zombified Avenger, or Defender, or Loved one…

Johnson’s Miniseries is another version of the Marvel Zombiepocalypse, which begs the question, what happens when Zombie Galactus infects your world? Or, more importantly, when it CARRIES the infection to your world?

Leonard Kirk’s art style is perfect for this story, a very dark, visceral style which is a little hard on the eyes, making the reader work for every panel. Yes, it hurts to read, but IT SHOULD! It’s Zombies!

This is worth the read if you can get all 4 issues (the first issue came out in July).

In a world existing somewhere between Watchmen 1985 and Current Multiverses, Tom King and begun a noir-ish tale… Did Rorschsch come back, to foil an assassination attempt, and die in the process?

Did he come back, and fail at an attempt at assassination?

Or, Gentle Readers, is there a whole slew of balls in the air we just haven’t seen yet, that we are going to be expected to juggle deftly, as they drop just into sight?

I have said before I am not a fan of Joshua Williamson’s writing.

Maybe I just don’t like him on the Flash. 

Four issues, each of them a very good story, each building, with some action and humor, to a smash mouth endpoint, that brings us to Death Metal #5.

I have to say, I’m enjoying this run of Justice League, even with the switch of artist teams mid - tale Xermanico’s work os beautiful, right into the valley of the Starros (that gave me giggle fits!) Rocha and Henriquez’s work is very pretty, and a little darker than Xermanico’s, giving a more atmospheric touch to the Antenna of LOD.

I have to admit, they do a mean Kori, as well! Really FIERCE, with a Full Length mohawk!

Well worth the cost of admission, and a strong addition to the Metal storyline.

Dan Jurgens has done a masterful job of tying up the Ric Grayson / Amnesias storyline that seems to have run for nigh on ever… by bringing it full circle to Anatoli Knyazev, the KGBeast.

The artwork in these two issues was pretty, with obvious switches between that of Travis Moore (the Titans / Batgirl pages) and Ronan Cliquet’s Batman / KGBeast pages.

Nicely tied up, completing multiple storylines in two issues. Ready to move forward/

Twenty issues in, and the book is cancelled… or is planned to end. Either way, this is a suck way to do things, DC.

This is a great group of characters. Much better than the roster in the Young Justice cartoon, simply for the diversity. Some heroes just coming into their own, some who have existed for years,  (the Wonder Twins have been around in MULTIPLE iterations since the 1970’s), all helping each other… This was a great jumping in book for pre-teens who weren’t up for all the violence / hyperkinetic action / storytelling of a true adult book.

And, it was FUN!

Bendis, Walker and Godlewski produced a fantastic product every month.

One which is ending too soon. Unless, of course, it is going to come back in a new package…

So, what are the rules around DEAD Characters returning?

Do they have to be relevant after so many years? Shouldn’t they be, well, driven to do something? Not take more than 50 issues to finally get around to saying…”Bazinga!’, or it’s equivalent?

I must admit, issue 50 is the first issue of a Spider-Man book I picked up, and started to enjoy, until I realized I needed to pick up the LR issues also in order to get the whole story. Didn’t’t we get enough of this in the Shooter Years? 

What about a year and a half ago, when Marvel vowed they would never pull this crap again?? 

I guess they forgot… (Insert comparison to jackass in office here).

Too much work, don’t really care.

Especially when the reveal of who Kindred is happens in issue 50, and Peter finds out in #53… Puh-Leez!

At least it’s not Professor Warren and his Gwen Stacy clone. **BRRRRR** Freakin’ Creepy Old Perv!

So, Lucius Fox is one of the richest men in the world. 

Selina Kyle has put the Bat on a One Year Clock to get his stuff together, or she walks.

Clownkiller might be the Bernard Goetz of Superhero Vigilantism (look up the reference, I can’t do everything!), but he goes about proving you can’t keep a good vigilante killer down if he has Google.

Ghost Maker is more than we thought, and knows who Bruce Wayne keeps in the closet (or cave).

Is there anyone in Gotham who doesn’t know who Bruce Wayne is?

Tynion continues to pump out some great product, the stories and characters do not disappoint. Including Grifter as Fox’s ‘bodyguard’ was a nice touch, having him get the drop on Batman, a nicer one.

The art in both books, while vastly different, is simply gorgeous. I want to see more od the team of Pagulayan and Miki, I’m hoping to see their work grow with the storylines.

Next issue, BATTLE Sequences! Should be fun, not that it hasn’t been so far.

Once upon a time, Sax Rohmer wrote stories about the machinations of one Fu Manchu, and his oft overturned attempts to take over the world.

In 1973, Steve Engelhart and Jim Starlin brought Shang Chi, son of Fu Manchu into the Marvel Universe, where he and his MI-6 partners Clive Reston and Black Jack Tarr were responsible for being the monkey wrenches in the machinery of Fu Manchu’s Plans.

It seems that Shang Chi is back, without his prior father. He is still proficient in all forms of martial arts, but now, he is ‘Champion of House of the Deadly Hand’ (like that name isn’t going to come to but him in the butt like a Karmic werewolf), and since the passing of his ‘Father”, now the Commander of the Five Weapons Society.

The artwork is pretty, and the story, steeped in Asian Mysticism, is a little draggy so far. Is the story good? Yeah, it’s a nice reminder of a character I exjyed a long tome ago.

Will it get better? Time will tell.

In the late 60’s, on certain New York television stations, the Saturday Afternoon hours were filled with Japanese imports, Kaiju - United Science Patrol, and of course the story of the death of Moroboshi, and the coming of Ultraman.

Ultraman, a human - alien symbiosis, who fought the Kaiju menace coming to take over the Earth.

Forward to 2020, a new Ultraman, with a new team of USP helpers / friends, and what looks at this point to be a corrupt system surrounding them.

This creative team has done a marvelous job with the material thus far, reviving this character for a modern reader.

It’s just a shame it’s only 5 issues…

It is definitely worth the read.

The current iteration has our favorite group of vamps and exterminators running around 1976, wrecking discos, trains, and graveyards, all in the name of bringing back Stoker’s primary villain.

Snyder proves again he is up to the task of creating a world of whimsy and horror, providing mayhem, madness, and the occasional snorting giggle. His droll wit, and ability to write a phenomenal action piece makes this cycle of the American Vampire story a must read.

Honor bound - 13

The sound of Sam’s labored breathing woke Finn up. They turned on the lamp beside the bed and rolled over, feeling blearily for Sam. When Finn’s hand touched them, Finn flinched away. Their skin was burning.

“Oh no, no no no, no, Sam…” They sat up and rolled Sam over onto their back. Their skin was slick with sweat, hair plastered to their forehead, clothes soaked beneath the blankets. Sam’s eyes were glazed over and unfocused. In the light of the lamp Finn could see their pulse jumping in their neck. Too fast. They felt Sam’s wrist. Way too fast. “Shit, shit, shit.”

They pulled the blankets off Sam, exposing them to the chilly air in the safehouse. Sam shivered and blindly reached for the covers, eyes lazing over the ceiling, unseeing. Finn dashed to the living room where Ellis and Vera were slumped on the couch asleep and Gray was stretched out on the floor. The team had elected to give Finn and Sam the bed so Sam could be comfortable and Finn could monitor them during the night. I was supposed to watch out for them and I failed. Shit!

“Ellis,” they hissed. Ellis stirred on the couch, slowly lifting their head and looking around. “Ellis,” they whispered. “Get up, I need you.” They didn’t look back as they rushed out the door to the car, grabbing their med kit and dashing back inside. Ellis was still sitting on the couch, groggy and confused. “Come on.” Finn pulled their arm, pulling them up off the couch and into the bedroom, Ellis weakly complaining the whole way. As soon as they saw Sam, they fell silent, frozen. They were shaken out of their reverie by Finn tossing the blood pressure cuff and stethoscope at them. “Get me a blood pressure,” they said without looking up from the bag. Ellis shook themselves and jumped onto the bed beside Sam, pulling their arm out of their sleeve.

Finn pulled out an IV kit and tied the tourniquet around Sam’s arm. Sam stirred, mewling weakly at the touch and at the cold. While the veins filled, Finn passed a thermometer over their forehead. Then again, disbelieving. They shook their head. Again. “104.2. Shit.” They assembled the IV set-up and sanitized the inside of Sam’s elbow. Too quickly for Sam to even flinch, Finn had the needle in, withdrawn, and connected to the extension set. They taped the IV down and turned to Ellis. “What have you got?”

Ellis shook their head, taking the stethoscope out of their ears. “Um…76/48?”

“Take it again.”

Hands shaking, Ellis pumped up the cuff and tried again. Finn’s heartbeat seemed to deafen them as they watched Ellis, holding their breath.

“78/50.”

“Shit.” They felt for a pulse. “132 on the pulse. No no no…” Their hand went to Sam’s forehead, sweeping the hair back from their face. They held out their hand for the stethoscope and listened to Sam’s lungs. The lower part of the right side rumbled with infection.

“What are we gonna do?” whispered Ellis.

“They’re septic,” moaned Finn. “They need antibiotics. And a lot of other things but…antibiotics mostly. And I don’t have any…” Their face fell into their hands. “None of the last four groups we ran into were selling, either. But I…” They looked helplessly at Sam. “If they don’t get them, they’ll die. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe sooner.”

Ellis reached for Finn’s hand. “Let me go find some.”

“No.” Finn’s voice was hard. “It’s too dangerous. Gavin’s people might be out there looking for us right now. No way.”

Ellis squeezed. “Either I risk that, or Sam dies. Right? There’s no way they could survive without antibiotics?”

Finn shook their head. “Well…probably not, but…we could find…we could do something…” They grabbed Ellis’ hand with both of theirs. “You’re my partner.”

Ellis smiled crookedly. “Don’t I know it. I can’t get rid of you.” They got off the bed. “But I’m going. I love Sam, too.” Their eyes swept Sam’s body, hot and flushed and trembling on the bed.

Finn opened their mouth to protest, then let it close with a sigh. “You’re right. Let me follow you out so I can grab my stuff. Take a radio with you. Don’t go far. If you’re gone for longer than a day, it won’t matter.” Their breath caught in their throat, shame chilling their insides. “I mean…”

“I get it.” Ellis took Finn’s chin and made them look at them. “I know you have to be that way with patients. Right now, Sam’s your patient.” They turned to leave the bedroom. Finn followed right behind.

Finn was proud of their cache of equipment. It had taken them a long time to collect and had cost more than all the team’s other needs combined, but it was worth it in times like this. They grabbed the cardiac monitor they had had to trade a car for and their sack of saline bags. Ellis grabbed the oxygen concentrator that was Finn’s prized possession, and the extra batteries for it.

As they carried the equipment inside, Gray stirred. “What’s goin’ on?” they mumbled. Finn walked right past them into the bedroom.

Ellis dropped to one knee and whispered so as not to wake Vera. “Sam got worse. Finn is gonna do what they can here, and I’m gonna go get antibiotics.”

“I’ll go with you.” Gray clumsily got to their feet.

“No.” Finn poked their head into the hall, having dropped their equipment. “Too dangerous. I hate risking Ellis. I can’t risk you, too.”

“I’m of more use helping Ellis than I am here,” Gray whispered back.

Finn hesitated in the doorway for a moment. Then they sighed. “Take the radio, let me know what you find. Don’t be gone longer than 24 hours.” They disappeared back into the room.

Ellis and Gray left silently, trying to let Vera sleep. It had been days since any of them had gotten proper rest. No use in waking her up if it wasn’t necessary.

Finn looked down at Sam and watched their eyes move slowly under the lids. Then they swallowed hard and got to work.

Finn covered Sam back up with only the thinnest blanket on the bed. Sam was already starting to shiver, but it was better to let them cool off a bit than to let them sweat under the covers. They spiked a bag of saline and hung it from a nail in the wall. They assumed it once held a picture, but whatever was there before was gone. They attached the saline to Sam’s IV and let it run wide open.

Finn dug a portable pulse ox out of their bag and clipped in onto Sam’s finger. They waited for the little machine to beep, normalize, get a reading… 89%.

They cursed silently and reached back into their bag for a nasal cannula. They put it on Sam’s face and plugged it into the oxygen concentrator. They turned it on and within minutes the number on the pulse ox was rising. 91%...94%...96%... Finn pulled up some IV Tylenol, checked the dose, and ran it into the IV.

No one on the team had ever been this sick before. They had treated scrapes and cuts, broken bones, even sutured a graze from a bullet that nearly killed Ellis when they first met, but they’d never done anything like this. Finn wasn’t deluded. They knew their team trusted them too much to take care of them. They knew if someone took a bullet to the gut, or got a concussion bad enough, or got an illness that couldn’t be treated with Tylenol and fluids, they would die without a hospital. And hospitals were run, almost without exception, by the syndicates. The only safe hospitals were inordinately expensive. Finn shook their head wearily. They were a stopgap. A glorified band-aid distributor. The pharmacy aisle at a convenience store could help more than they could.

They buried their face in their hands, tears of frustration burning their eyes. They’d signed up to be a combat medic when they were 18, when the governments were still pretending to fight the criminal organizations that now ran the world. They’d gotten through their first three weeks of medical training when their base had been attacked and destroyed. Every person found on the base, military or not, had been shot execution style where they stood. Finn was one of the only ones that escaped. They’d been on the run ever since. They couldn’t remember much of anything they learned in basic training, and most of the medicine they knew was what they had picked up along the way. The only difference between them and anyone else on the team was that three weeks of training. A monkey could do what I can do, and be almost as successful. A tear ran down their cheek.

Snap out of it, idiot. There was no time for self-pity when Sam was dying. They couldn’t do much without antibiotics, but they might be able do enough to keep Sam alive until they arrived.

Content for now, Finn turned to their bag to do a quick inventory. Aside from their regular med kit, they had 12 bags of saline left, 4 lithium ion batteries for the oxygen concentrator, and one extra battery for the monitor. They did some quick math in their head. If Sam is 60 kilos, give or take, they’ll need 1800 mL fluids in the first three hours, or is it 1200 mL, shit, why can’t I remember this right now…this is when I need to know this stuff… They glanced at the liter of fluid hanging from the wall. Half of it was already gone. Screw it. I keep their blood pressure up. If they need similar boluses after that then I’ll have a little less than 24 hours before I run out. They closed their eyes. I guess it won’t matter after that. I told them they have 24 hours. Their hands reached vaguely towards the lithium batteries, thinking. Each battery lasts for four-ish hours, give or take, so including the one already running we’ll have…20 hours of O2, minimum. They ran a tense hand through their hair. That’s more than cutting it damned close.

They pumped up the blood pressure cuff and took another pressure. 80/54. They could pretend it was improvement.

I can’t think of another damned thing I can do for them. Most of their equipment was for trauma, anyway. They wracked their brain for another moment before they slumped, giving in to their worry.

They crawled next to Sam and lay down next to them over the thin blanket, flinching at the heat coming off their skin. They laid their head next to Sam’s and wrapped one arm around their waist, reaching across them and holding their hand.

“You know,” Finn whispered against Sam’s ear, “we’re gonna get through this. You’re gonna get better, we’re gonna get Isaac back, and we’re all gonna run away together somewhere safe. Somewhere Gavin can’t find us. Someday this is all gonna be some terrible memory. Maybe you can go to college, would you like that? I could actually become a medic. Or maybe even do medical school. Who knows. Vera could get that dog she’s always talking about, and we could all go over to mine and Ellis’ house on the weekends to have cookouts and go swimming in our pool and watch movies. Ellis could be safe, they could go to therapy, they could…I don’t know, maybe write their book?” Finn laughed gently. “Isaac can finally relax and figure out what he wants to do. You know, I’ve never once heard him talk about what he would do if we were safe? Anyway, we’d be far away from the crime and the death and the running, we’d be safe, maybe we could have a garden, a cat… What would you go to school for? I don’t think I remember. I know we’ve talked about it. You’ll have to tell me when you get better.” They pressed a kiss against Sam’s temple. “You know I hate it when they leave me behind? Drives me insane. I just want to help, I just want to contribute like they do, and they say it’s because I’m an asset but anyone could do what I do…honestly, not complicated…maybe if I had some actual medicines to work with but…with what I have to work with…” They sighed. “I just want to be in it with you. I want to feel how it feels to raid a compound, pull the trigger and watch some piece-of-shit murderer go down, I want to feel the way you all do when you work together and pull off a mission…” They pressed their lips together and tried to ignore the tears running down their face and into the pillow.

“I’m so sorry we let this happen to you.” Their voice was shaking. “I know Isaac blames himself, but it’s all of our faults. We left you unprotected. We should never have expected you to…” They shook their head. “Once we get you better, I swear to you, we will keep you safe, we’ll never put you in danger again. Just…hold on for us, Sam. Hold on for me. You just have to hold on until they get back with the antibiotics…just for a few hours, I promise…” They soothed their sweat-soaked curls away from their face. “Please, Sam. Please just fight this. Please stay alive.”

As they put their hand back in Sam’s, Finn felt them squeeze weakly. They smiled through their tears and squeezed back.

i played the “link’s awakening” remaster

and i liked it! with some caveats.

i played “link’s awakening dx” obsessively as a small child before i could get my hands on other games (nintendo games have always been $60 dollars a pop so it took a long time to get a new one) so i blasted through the remake super fast using only my muscle memory to help me. by the time i was at the end boss i was missing 10 seashells (they added 24 more for this new release for a total of 50) and 2 heart pieces. i did everything i could in this game, i feel like. so i’m going to quickly share my thoughts about this game in the form of some bullet points. if you somehow manage to get spoiled from this post about a 30 year old game that’s on you at this point, so im not putting this under a cut.

THE GOOD:

the graphical upgrade is VERY aesthetically good. the characters are extremely cute without feeling saccharine and still read as the same characters you remember from the original game. everything looks REALLY good. the plastic-y feeling of everything makes me feel like i;m smashing a bunch of dolls together as a kid having a grand adventure in my imagination. i love it.

the music is spectacular, but its a nintendo game so that goes without saying, really.

they kept the original script intact, which is a DELIGHTFUL relic from the early 90s for a game that was and is very silly compared to later titles. i love the old goofy script and im so glad they resisted the urge to try to improve on it at all. you still get your smooch from madame meowmeow. you can still take marin to the trendy game and get thrown out.

the new map marking system is a lifesaver and should be a standard feature in every game like this, where you have to leave a chest and come back for it later.

there’s also a new feature where you can re-read old dialog from things you’ve read and people you’ve talked to, in case you missed a hint. VERY good stuff imo.

the voice acting additions are limited to grunts and laughs and exclamations. as it should be with every nintendo game imo.

they added physics to the trendy game (the claw machine) and it is absolutely frustrating and hilarious. i love it. its so cruel and funny.

THE MEH:

the dungeon maker is a mixed bag, mostly because i think nintendo mis-sold it. it is definitively NOT a zelda dungeon maker. not even close. it is nothing like mario maker in any capacity and i have no idea why nintendo included the capability of sharing dungeons (using amiibos??? why would anyone want this? why bother?) because no one in their right mind would want to play these. what the feature ACTUALLY is appears to be a sort of fun-ish puzzle game where the aim is to slot the pieces you have into existing molds to try to create something coherent, using the parameters set by dampe. that’s fun! i like that! i like trying to hash something out into a workable dungeon using scant few parts. what i dont like is having to run through it at the end, because i’ve already done all these rooms before. and by the end of all the challenges i’m sick to the DEATH of it.

the music it plays from all the instruments you collect to wake the windfish pretty bad. a sore thumb in what should be a climatic moment is undercut by what sounds like funstep

the eagle tower is still the worst dungeon ive ever encountered, in maybe all of zelda history and im real salty about it still destroying me in 2019 like it did in 1999

$60 is too much for this game, imo.

THE BAD:

the reward for finishing the first 3 difficulties of dampe’s dungeon maker thing are seashells, heart pieces and a fairy bottle. the reward for finishing the last puzzle on the highest difficulty is an insulting 300 rupees.

similarly, the reward for finding 40 seashells is the better sword. the reward for getting all of them is...more rooms for the fucking dungeon maker.

they added some statues of mario enemies to the game that you can win from the trendy game, including one you can’t get until after you beat the game. your reward for this is nothing. except for, you guessed it, more goddamn rooms for the dungeon maker. then he also lets you play the game for 1/2 off. i don’t know why you would want this in post game. think about all this shit you have to do to get a measly 300 rupee prize.

the frame rate is so bad, that i’m shocked. this is a game made by nintendo for their own console and the frame rate is so amazingly terrible. i’m not even someone who notices these things unless they are egregious, that’s how bad it is.

most importantly:

THEY REMOVED THE PHOTO MOUSE!!!! NINTENDO I WON’T FORGET THIS!!!!! YOU’VE MADE A TERRIBLE ENEMY IN ME WITH THIS!!!!!
