What you're about to see is the last pictures/footage of David Greenwood, who went missing after venturing into the Greatlake National Park. His camera was found in a river covered in a mixture of blood and a unknown white liquid.

0:00 ~ 0:10 - David walks through the woods as his feet crushes leaves and sticks, he hums to himself as he rounds a corner.

0:11 ~ 0:40 - David looks around the ruins of the Greatlake Train Station. His voice is audible but distorted by corruption of the footage "??????I hope?????wasn't lying about this Urbex place??????" He then walks onto the rails, going into the tunnel on the right.

0:41 ~ 1:05 - David walks along the rusted rails turning left, revealing a barred door with a red light above it, and a padlock. David walks up to the door and reveals a key, putting it into the padlock and unlocking the door.

1:06 ~ 1:20 - David descends some stairs beyond the locked door, his footsteps echoing as he turns on the camera's light. "Christ it's cold in here." He says soon finding another barred door, this time without a lock as he opens it up.

1:21 ~ 1:30 - David walks through the dark concrete corridors. Each breath he took, and each step he took echoed amongst the dark walls, continuing into the black abyss in front of him.

1:31 ~ 1:55 - He soon comes across another door in front of a worklight. David stops a bit, confused. Before continuing on through the door.

1:56 ~ 2:22 - David enters a corridor as he whistles a bit. "Holy fuck I've hit the motherload. Why the hell does this place even still have power?" He chuckles as he shivers a bit again. "And why the hell is a wheelchair down here?" He approaches it and taps his foot against it. The wheelchair looks worn from disuse and age. Suddenly, there's a sound of clattering as the camera looks up. "The hell!?"

2:23 ~ 2:39 - The camera shoots up, just missing whatever it was. But capturing the objects crashing to the ground. "What the fuck!? H-Hey get back here!" He yells running deeper into the tunnel.

2:40 ~ 2:59 - He pokes the camera around the corner, whispering a bit. "W-Was that a person? Why the hell would a person be out here in some locked off tunnels..." He then continues around the corner, navigating by spray painted walls and abandoned mattress.

3:00 ~ 3:15 - He turns the light on as he descends a small set of stairs, discovering some beds. Out of frame he reads something off of the walls. "Monsters exist in Greatlake...the fuck?" He keeps going, turning right and finding...something.

3:16 ~ 3:27 - He finds a black trail of [REDACTED] leading to a small hole in a metal fence. "Christ...w-why the hell does it smell like lawncare?" He says, coughing a bit. He turns around and heads down the hall to the left.

3:28 ~ 3:33 - He coughs more and more as he finds another door by a green exit sign. "Christ, it feels like someone is ripping out my lungs...i-is this what smoking is like?" He says as the camera reveals the door was locked. He turns left and discovers a stairway.

3:34 ~ 3:45 - He travels up more stairway, camera swaying as he coughs more. "I ne-need to leave s-soon...I-I think this place is-" He violently coughs up [REDACTED] "W-What the fuck?" He turns around another corner.

3:46 ~ 4:15 - He stumbles up more concrete stairs, discovering multiple stains of [REDACTED] as he find s little room with a CCTV setup showing the park and subway tunnels...with a rotting Kidutus guard corpse, eyes ripped out sitting in front of it holding a key. "W-What the fuck!?" David yells, as he hears something echoing throughout the bunker...and it was coming closer to him. He quickly grabs the key off of the body. Turning around as yelling is heard all around him.

4:16 ~ 4:24 - He quickly runs down the stairs, sprinting as he slams into the locked exit door, unlocking quickly as loud footsteps are heard behind him.

4:25 ~ 4:31 - He runs through the door, revealing a cave system as he yells. Seeming to look behind him at what's chasing him. He sees a bright light up ahead as he runs towards it.

4:32 ~ 4:38 - He is nearly at the exit, about to escape...only for the camera to jerk a bit and turn around...showing what was chasing him.

4:39 ~ 4:49 - Camera freezes on the appearance of...something, it's skin a sickly white with two long eye stocks, seeming closed as David's last scream is looped over and over again, before the camera cuts off to a black screen for a few minutes.

8:32 - 10:21 - Camera is sitting in river water as a waterfall is heard, staring up at the grey gloomy sky, rain pouring down as the camera slowly runs out of battery.

HUZZAH!!!! My plan is a success. The ‘One Day’ + Gojo conversion has begun! But jokes. The inspiration for IW is such an interesting question.

Funnily enough, I kind of approached the ‘One Day’/IW/jjk inspiration the opposite way: I watched season 1 of JK and kept thinking about the bare bones of a story idea, or, at that point, a vague, self-indulgent self-insert of a love interest for Gojo: a girl who couldn’t touch people, hands behind her back, wearing black gloves. I couldn't tell you why I thought of that, but I just thought it was cool as fuck. I had this badass mental image of this cool asf woman removing her gloves with a powerful flourish in the climax of a sick anime battle sequence. Idk, man. And then, when I started taking myself more seriously, I figured that because I love childhood-friends-to-lovers, I decided she’d be Gojo’s childhood friend.

But I wanted to explore that childhood first: I think the main reason most people don't like friends-to-lovers is because most authors don't put in the time to establish the characters as friends first. Why should a reader care about the protagonist/childhood-friend-love-interest's relationship when all they've been given is a blithe attempt at exposition in which the protagonist tells (not shows) the reader that 'yes we've been friends for so long and we really care about each other so yippee root for our relationship!'? I knew that friends-to-lovers works best when there is so much time spent to flesh out the 'friends' relationship first, and that I wanted to show that, preferably chronologically, and not just rely on flashbacks that are just a general pet peeve of mine (they're so difficult to do right, I can go on about it for donkeys).

That's why I came up with using 'One Day' as an inspiration: I wanted to go through years of these characters' lives--genuine decades--and use a chronological narrative, without doing crazy time jumps, and still being able to focus in on the day-to-day, moment-to-moment aspect of a relationship, to really foster that intimacy I wanted to convey. And, so: boom! The 'A concept shamelessly stolen from 'One Day' by David Nicholls' tag was born.

You've got me thinking more about how 'One Day' has influenced IW. Give me a second and I'll write it up fully.

One of my relatively early thorki fics from back in the kinkmeme days, full of somnophilia and various other kinks and delicious bottom!Thor with a side of Loki angst. (I bet I know why this one has a disproportionate number of hits to kudos. seems like it has a lot of. ah. reread value *waggles eyebrows*)

second-most kudos: Thunder and Other Things (thorki, 22.7k words). My take on the standard thorki arranged marriage with Jotun Loki trope... but because it's me writing it, he quickly gets Thor pregnant.

third-most comments: LMD (thorki+ (it's complicated), IW/EG AU-ish, 67k words). I guess it makes sense for one of my longer and serially posted fics to have lots of comments, even though it was written after the fandom had gotten so much quieter in recent years.

fourth-most bookmarks: Fimbulwinter (thorki, Wintersmith AU, 28.7k words). I still have a huge soft spot for this one. I love the way the story just seemed to be waiting to be uncovered, the way the roles just slipped over them, perfectly fitted. I love it when I get to play around with mythic references and resonances.

fifth-most words: What You Are in the Dark (thorki, horror, 37k words). One of my spookyfics, but one that started out from a single scene/concept of Thor getting consentacled by tentacle-monster Loki who was horrified by what his transformed body was doing, and it grew to a pretty sizeable story to explain that scene. Figuring out how to make that work was fun XD

least words: Two Thefts (Brothers Karamazov, Mitya/Alyosha, 100 words). It's a true drabble, what can I say? I come from old fandom where the art of drabbling was an important skill. Of course it's exactly 100 words long.

(Alternatively, if we stick with Thor fandom fics, it would be Jotun Thor Is Thor's Fursona, which is 377 words. I still recall hastily writing and posting it in response to a mutual's shitpost while getting ready to run out the door to head down to Comic-con and then not realizing how it had landed until I was able to actually sit down and scroll tumblr hours later XD good times, good times.)

the last thing i wrote is in first draft territory and in desperate need of revision so i'm a bit self conscious, but i'll post the most presentable snippet from it. this is from the same fic as this post (my canon divergence fic with arakawa, sawashiro and ichiban). this one implies a bit more about Sawashiro's background that's discussed in IW but there are no major spoilers, so read at your own discretion, I suppose?

“Do you know for sure?” 

“Totally abandoned by his parents, and left to grow up in a brothel. It’s not exactly a common story.” 

“I suppose not.” Arakawa conceded. “How long have you known about the boy?” 

Arakawa held his eyes, and Sawashiro’s tongue grew heavy in his mouth. He’d known too much, for too long. “…A while.” 

Something passed in Arakawa’s gaze, something harsh. He wouldn’t be surprised if it was judgment. “I don’t need the exact day, Sawashiro, but when I ask when, I expect a better answer than that.” 

He opened his mouth, feeling for better words. “Years. A short while after joining the family. When he was a younger boy.” 

Arakawa holds the stare a moment longer, then sighs and puts his head in his hands, stubs out what little remains of this cigarette. “And now it’s a problem.” 

His brows furrow. “Now it’s a problem.”

5-fic self-rec!

Thanks for tagging me for this, @oluka (and the last line thing too except I had to pass on that one because I haven't written anything in a while other than the last excerpt I posted on here 😅).

Except for "Apricity," which is near and dear to my heart despite how much I itch to edit it (a constant issue I have with things I write), I went with some of my favorites that have flown under the radar.

Hm...this ended up more of a "hey, good job, me" post than a "I'm trying to find what's compelling about these fics to rec them" post. Oh well.

In order of publication:

Apricity (616 Steve/Tony, T, 1.5k)

My first fic on AO3! My first Steve/Tony fic! And somehow it was 616 instead of MCU. I love dark Steve, but I'm particular with how exactly he's unhinged and this is how I like him. Even-keeled despite being off his rocker. Rational in his own head. Soured on the world, but in a way that pushes who he is to the extremes so his core is still visible even if it's mottled with rot. And, of course, obsessed with Tony. I also like the tempo of this; I used to have a good grasp on tempo, but I feel like I've lost that a bit over the years.

Unraveled (Warrior (2011) gen fic, G, 1k)

Since it's a movie that doesn't have a lot of fanworks for it and it's a gen fic to boot, barely anyone has read this, but I don't care because it was written for a friend, @luxover. I love writing little stories to gift friends. If you haven't watched Warrior, watch it! Brutal tearjerker about a broken family and broken men and one of the few good sports movies out there. No, you don't need to know anything about MMA to enjoy it. I don't.

Okay, I should talk about this ficlet. I'm fond of this one because it's so different from my usual writing. It's stream-of-consciousness and entirely voice-driven like someone sat you down in Brendan's head and he's talking and talking even if he naturally isn't saying of this out loud. Because he and his brother Tommy are emotionally constipated; even if they love each other a lot, they don't know how to reach out to each other. They don't know if they're wanted. This also has one of my favorite last lines I've ever written. GUT PUNCH, if I do say so myself. ONE-TWO HIT, K.O. Sums up every layer of their relationship.

Hidden Declaration (Brad/Ray (Generation Kill), T, 728 words)

Another gift for a friend (the same friend)! Brad/Ray and MCU Steve/Tony share some similarities despite being drastically different, so is it any surprise I liked these two unhinged idiots? I never open for fic prompts, but this was when I was on a roll and then I got scared because lux asked for this. I never wrote for Gen Kill, I read maybe 3 GK fics in my life, and Ray is one of those characters who are impossible to write well imo (to be honest, I also feel the same way about Brad though the difficulty is subtler). He's an unusual guy with a very particular way of speaking.

And somehow this flowed out of me quickly. It's not without its flaws, but it was so different from what I usually write and how I do that it was really fun to write this! Very dialogue-heavy too which isn't what I'm known for. And the crassest (also...some language that's not okay as a warning, but if you know GK, it comes with the territory) and most sexual (it's still not very sexual lol) out of my fics. I think I captured how much they're best friends and they're so comfortable in each other's presence well. Plus I put a little wink for my friend at the end and it's one of the few times I like being indulgent with my writing. Also, tattoo fics are a trope and I guess this counts as my one tattoo fic though it's not an AU and there's no actual tattooing involved.

A Long, Final Rest Among the Stars (MCU Tony-centric/Nebula & Tony gen fic, G, 2.7k)

My tribute to best boy Tony, my first and ultimate love (along with Steve, of course) along with an expansion of the lovely bits of Nebula and Tony's tender friendship that we got to see in IW which I adored. They share a lot in common.

Writing this made me so sad because I felt like I was preparing to say goodbye to Tony. It made me reminisce about how it all started, and everything came full circle. His past is his present. Tony's trapped on a dark spaceship injured and far, far away from home. Tony's trapped in a dark cave injured and far, far away from home. There's a kind spirit with him, and even if they try to keep him alive, he's a dead man walking. But he's also come a long way from the man he used to be. I'M REALLY PROUD OF HIM, OKAY? I LOVE HIM.

The Burning of Flowers (616 Steve/Tony, G, 1.2k)

I secretly really, really wish more people read this fic. I wanted to write a Hanahaki AU for a while, but I couldn't figure out what I'd do that would feel fresh and then I came up with this subversion of sorts. Hanahaki AUs usually involve someone pining for their love and refusing to let go of it because it means so much to them. I thought I'd write about someone who doesn't have it—and simultaneously wants and doesn't want it—and wishes ill on the person he loves by hoping their love has it. And what better era to situate it than Hickmanvengers? You don't need to know Hickmanvengers to enjoy it, though.

I'm extremely proud of this one because it's one of the best fics I've written if I'm allowed to toot my own horn for a sec! Please let me because it's so rare for me to feel like I don't want to rip apart chunks of my fics and sew them back whole again, new and improved. I think this is one of my most complete fics in that way; I can probably tweak it, but I'm satisfied with nearly all of it if not all of it.

Anyway, I was in a slump and then suddenly the old magic returned and I slipped back into the writing style I used to have back in the mid-2010s except better. I could actually see that I've developed as a writer even if I'm still learning. But the atmosphere, the sensory lines, and the rhythm returned. I like the pace of this a lot and feel like it follows Steve's relentless rage, much like the unmoored, slower pace of "Apricity" reminds me of a colder Steve who never fully woke up from the ice.

Unorganized thoughts after finishing IW

I was probably the most impressed by Yamai. He's a lovable villain.

THE YAMAI/ARAKAWA PARALLELS!!!!!!!! (This deserves its own post)

The ATONEMENT is satisfying. Yamai, Bryce (kinda, at least he didn't kill himself), Ebina, and Eiji!!! It almost makes up for the bitterness of Aoki being denied redemption.

Sawashiro LIVING is insane.

I'm a bit surprised about how many characters lived but it seems to be a declaration from writing RGG differently. Wong Tou was kind of forgettable but it's mostly the sheer volume of the cast.

They shelved the hell out of Chitose, though. Wow.

My main gripe with the writing is losing the plot a little with the guardians of Nele Island. Fine, we can have the giant deadly shark battle. (Even though sharks don't need more media depicting them as far more dangerous than they are.) But ALSO a giant squid? Come on.

Okay also the Saeko/Ichiban felt a little forced heterosexual romance but to me it makes perfect sense for Ichiban to feel like should like Saeko. (To be fair, I can picture Ichiban falling for a lot of the cast.) I found it cute, but I can imagine it was annoying to a lot of people. It was to my friend watching me play lmao

The gameplay was top notch from start to finish. The battles felt so, so good. It was fast, it was dynamic the animations were satisfying, and there were so many mechanics to play with. Honestly the only wrong thing with the gameplay that it's almost TOO much. And they force you to do some of it as part of the main story (Sujimon and Dondoko Island).

I literally played GOLF to reach Level 9 Awakening all for a cutscene where Kiryu doesn't talk to Haruka.

The Lani/Haruka parallel was a tad hamfisted but I still would have liked to see more. The cast was too large to give any meaningful attention to the main living MacGuffin of the plot

This game was definitely worth its steep price tag to me, mostly because of Dondoko Island minigame in addition to the regular content.

I'm glad I took my time with the game. I didn't burn myself out and had time to digest information in between cutscenes.

Thanks for the ask! To my equally great joy and despair I do indeed read A LOT of fanfic…and yes, I have spreadsheets, folders, lists…it’s a whole (slightly insane) thing. So my first reaction to your question was hysterical laughter. One? I’m allowed to pick only one? *makes big sad eyes at you*

Ok, well. Hm, let’s narrow it down. I kind of consider my AO3 bookmarks my unofficial faves collection (but I haven’t updated that in quite some time, and I almost never put WIPs on there and I can think of at least 2 very strong contenders in that category right now that I should definitely list, so take that with a grain of salt.) In my bookmarks I use the tag ‘All Time Favorites - Top 10 - Best of the Best’, and scrolling through those I just noticed that not only have I used this tag for 11 fics (go figure) but I’m also not even sure about my selection anymore. Ask me again in 3 months what my top 10 are and you’ll probably get a different answer again. Ok, I realize I’ve been waffling on and on in a desperate attempt to not have to make a choice, but I cannot pick just one. Have three instead (even that is painful). And since I’m a cheating cheater who cheats, all three are actually series… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

hey maggie! i’m a huge fan of IW, it’s a such a good story and your writing is out of this world. i read it all in a day and when i finished it i called my girlfriend and told her the entire story so she would suffer with me LMAO even when hebi spirals when they kiss and i’m like GIRL GOJO IS INTO YOU!!! i can still see why she’s spiraling because you write her though process so well.

anyways, big big kudos to you. amazing story, one of my favorite gojo fics out there.

on another note, i’m also a writer. i have one gojo fic and a bunch of chosoyuki ones. chosoyukiweek is coming up in march, and one of the prompts is first love. i immediately thought about writing something inspired by IW (but different ofc, it would be just a one-shot so nothing as in depth as your story) when i saw that prompt.

i know you based the structure of the story off One Day, but i still very much think of it as yours lol so i wanted to ask if it’s okay with you if i write something for chosoyuki inspired by IW. i’ll link your story as well ofc. but if it’s not okay with you that’s completely fine as well!

If you mean something more IW-specific, then I would be absolutely flattered and yes that’s lovely of you, of course, but if you just mean to use the ‘One Day’ one-chapter-per-year concept then please write away! It is by no means IW-specific.

In fact, I was watching the Netflix show (which is unironically really good wtf, it’s persuaded one of my mates to actually read the book HUZZAH) and was just clutching my heart and swooning all the time just because David Nicholls has his concept Down. He gets that shit. I’m not being faux-modest when I say that IW is simply an imitation of how bloody good ‘One Day’ is.

The First Domino to Fall    How 2003’s Paybacks a Bitch led to the creation of AEW    (A summary)  (For @adampage)   So, we all know about Generico helping make the Young Bucks successful and Kevin forming The Elite, right?    Well, what if I said that neither of them would have been in a place to do that if not for “Payback’s A Bitch 2003” 

Because here’s the thing (and do NOT expect a Mithen quality essay on this, this is a quick and dirty write up if you want the real goods, go to her “Ring The Bell” Substack. Actually, go anyway, it’s awesome stuff. Go Go!) 

So, Kevin started out training at the age of 15 under Jacques Rougeau. Sami, meanwhile, learned the ropes in a friend’s backyard.  

Kevin was the star of Rougeau’s school and was put on the fast track to the WWE. All signs pointed to him making it there before his 21st birthday through the connections of Rougeau (a former WWE Tag Champion) and his abilities. 

Sami?   Not so much. 

Sami had far more talent but looked like if you put a luchador mask on a stick bug. He was NOT WWE “Look” Material at that point, unlike Kevin at that point who was, or at least, was closer to. 

Enter IWS.    Technically, they encountered each other before that, but IWS is one of the main things where Kevin began to explore outside his school. He was the best guy at Rougeau's school... and hated it. He was BORED. But then, fate intervened and he started wrestling for other Montreal promotions... and LOVED it. He finally realized there was more to wrestling besides his formulaic, rigid training and was thriving. 

Enter Payback’s a Bitch.    Rougeau gave him an ultimatum. Come back to the school and never wrestle in ‘shithole’ promotions again, or give up his fastrack to WWE and spend the rest of his career in said shitholes. 

Kevin managed to convince Rougeau to let him have one last farewell match.  At Payback’s a Bitch.    Against El Generico.    Well, again, if you want the full essay version of that, as well as Mith's story of how she came to acquire the video of it, GO HERE, but TL:DR, Kevin wrestled one singles match against Sami and realized he could never go back. That one match convinced him that the path he was on, alongside Sami, was the correct one and he abandoned Rougeau and set about making it to the WWE the long way around with Sami at his side. 

If that match hadn’t happened, Kevin would have likely gotten to WWE... where he would have been chewed up and spat out by guys like Cena, Orton, and Lesner and sent right back to Montreal. Sami, meanwhile, never would have made it out of Montreal because, as stated this weekend, their big break in the US came at PWG... TOGETHER.    So, yeah. You know the rest of the dominos in that story but the truth is that if Steen and Generico hadn’t had their match at 2003’s Payback’s a Bitch, the subsequent dominos that fell in line to allow The Elite to form wouldn’t have happened, and thus, AEW never would have happened.

I have to agree with you about the relationship with Peter and Gamora in vol 3. It was handled in a way I really liked and respected. I also think certain moments with them were some of the stronger parts of the movie. The ending seemed hopeful and like they finally started to reconnect.

what keeps me from being all in is definitely IW. I am honestly still really angry anyone agreed to put out such abuse and then have it be validated. As someone who has worked with people who have been in abusive situations it was extra hurtful because leaving can often lead to being harmed or killed and I wish that would have been addressed in some way that wasn't about focusing on her abuser being sad. Have a family member talk about her life and the things she'd accomplished and her dreams. Gamora wanted to do the right thing from the start and save other little girl's from the harm done to her and Nebula. Her loss was a loss to many. It would have been nice to have that get more focus than the idea it was primarily a loss to Thanos and some huge sacrifice on his part

Also I know people have had back and forth ideas about Gamora's ending and I think if they were going to allow Thanos to come in and retcon parts of her story, I would have preferred she went back to her home planet to see what had survived and maybe gain back parts of her culture and history. She always had this tiny braid that read to me as cultural and I noticed after Endgame it's gone. Maybe getting to go home and see her with a braid or certain clothing could have been a nice nod to making peace. And she and Peter had that in common. Being ripped away from home and mothers in particular. Would have been a cool symmetry to their stories.

the abuse validation plot of iw is disgusting and should've never happened; i, too, will be angry about it forever. gamora should've also gotten more focus in the writing of vol 3 to better make her overall arc just a bit less of a mess, which was definitely one of my main criticisms of the film (check my tag 'gotg spoilers' for more!). some connection to her homeworld would've been great in some added focus, too. that said, in light of the situation we have, i think the relationship was handled as well as it could've been, better than i feared it would be, and i was pleased with what we got in light of that.

16. At what point in the process do you come up with titles?

Usually fairly late, which is why the working tag and the doc file name is always something fairly neutrally descriptive -- Home is "iw time travel concept," Yonder is "endgame roleswap au concept," Horizon is "yonder prequel natasha concept," Morning is "family reunion concept." I don't really expect to come up with the fic title until just before the first chapter is posted, and usually I come up with the chapter titles while I'm filling out the AO3 page. Sometimes I come up with titles earlier -- Horizon's title was actually intended to go with the Yonder sequel, but I liked it too much to wait for a story that might or might not ever come down the line. I deliberately try not to title things until very late in the process, because if they're titled, they're real. I've come up with titles well in advance before, but tbh most of those stories don't end up being written since those are usually sequel titles.

23. How do you choose where to end a chapter (if you have multi-chapter works)?

Uh, instinct. I've been doing this for a long time. I don't usually have too much of a problem figuring out where to end a chapter; I try to end on a complete thought that still intrigues the reader to keep going, but try to keep cliffhangers to a minimum. It should do a little set-up for the next chapter; I'm writing serial fiction here. I usually have a decent idea going into a chapter on what the end of it is going to be; it doesn't always work out, but it is something I consider. Sometimes I'll know well far in advance the scene I'd like to end a chapter on, but because of the general chaotic nature of my planning process that doesn't always work out. Because I wrote to a chapter minimum, I'm usually pretty aware while writing where I'm likely to end; however, if I go long and have to split a chapter, then that can screw with it some. (If I was writing for publication rather than writing serial fanfic, I would not be writing 10K chapters and I'd break differently, but this is the genre I work in.) In general, it's not something I have to really think about aggressively; I've been doing this for a long time, I can feel it out, I pay a lot of attention to where other kinds of serial fiction end an episode or an issue and how well those work, and I just...know. Writing serial fiction is very much a different genre than anything else, and I do end my chapters knowing that readers will have anywhere from a few weeks to a few months before the next chapter comes along -- one reason I try to avoid aggressive cliffhangers.

I think these were originally for fanfic writers or writers who write short fiction, so my answers might be boring lol. Also please forgive if I reference things from 2021, as time has congealed into a giant ball since mid-2018.

Total number of completed works: uhhh none? oops. I’m very much a long form writer and I have a full time job so finishing things takes me a while

Total number of WIPs worked on this year: maybe 16? but most of them were just a few lines or developing ideas.

WIPs neglected this year: Indigo Wars Book 1 😬 sry bby. and Remnants which hasn’t been touched in a while.

Total word count: oh god probably over 80k? maybe over 100k? i should really start keeping track

Looking back, did you write more than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you expected? definitely less. i moved back in with my parents in early 2022 and had a lot of trouble writing after that. i’m hoping to turn that around in 2023 (or move out again to protect my free time).

Did you take any writing risks this year? i started a new wip that centres around a love triangle that becomes a poly triad, and i have genuinely no idea how to write that! the risk did not get very far as i’m now stuck on the set up for the actual plot lol

Do you have any goals for the new year? write more! as i said, 2022 and the first part of 2023 have been really hard in terms of writing and i want to turn that around. i’d also really like to FINALLY finish editing the current draft of Indigo Wars 1 and prep it for querying, then start editing Remnants

Biggest disappointment? probably my overall productivity, i really wanted to write more and it just didn’t happen

Biggest surprise? i started another new world with multiple stories set in it, which i said i wasn’t going to do after how much of a headache the vario world has given me. ah well!

Most popular story of the year? lol Remnants!! people love that story even if i didn’t write anything for it this year

What's your own favourite story of the year? also Remnants i honestly think it might be my best project to date and it makes me doubt all of my other projects

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Indigo Wars!! non of y’all seem to like IW and i don’t know why

Most fun story to write: hmm Just Jane or Open Seas, they’re both absolute delights

Most unintentionally telling story: tbh they’re most telling as a whole, when you realize that almost all of them are about women who think they’re full of rage but are actually full of grief

My favourite part of writeblr this year: my friends!! honestly they’re the reason i stick around even when my creative output is subzero

Clint walked into his living room, cleaning tractor grease off his hands. "Laura? Honey? Where are you?" He called out. "Daddy?" Clint heard the voice of his daughter Lila. "Something's wrong with Mom, Cooper, and Nate!" Clint then dropped the towel and rushed into the kitchen, seeing his wife and sons turn into dust by her dissolving. "Clint? What's happen…" Laura started before being cut off. "Dad, I…" Cooper also stopped when he fully turned to ash. Nathaniel simply cried before also turning to dust. Clint then wrapped his arms around Lila, and the two simply sobbed until Clint felt Lila turn to dust in his arms as well. Hawkeye then slumped to the floor and put his head in his hands. ------ Steve sat next the ashes that were all that remained of Bucky. Thor then knelt down next to Steve. Natasha, Rocket, Bruce, Okoye, Rhodes, and M'Baku watched both the Sentinel of Liberty and the God of Thunder as they looked at the ashes of Barnes, seeing both not only beaten, but truly broken for the first time in either of their lives.

This is just terrible.

It's not telling an actual story, just relating events. There's no subtext, except stuff that's so obvious it might as well be a billboard on I-95.

In LA.

Plus, those line breaks are in the original fic. The writer didn't notice or care enough to fix the formatting, so there's three lines (and a hidden " " between every paragraph. You can see it if you highlight.

I don't think it's a good idea to use Steve and Thor's "publicity" totles titles in a serious scene.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I... I should have... I should have gone for the arm." Thor said, tears beginning to form as he put his head in his hands.

Ah, yes, the classic "I understood that reference" fanfic moment.

Dude, do you really want to bring up memes? At this point? In this mood? Localized entirely within your kitchen?

The writer also has a habit of putting dialogue tags after the speech, every single time. Which is a bad idea, especially in a group scene.

"No. Even Thanos said I should have gone for the head. I… just wanted to kill him. He took my best friend. My brother. Half of my people. 300 dwarves. Billions of people across the galaxy. I just wanted to…" Thor said, tears falling freely. "Avenge them." Natasha said, joining the two over what remained of Bucky, placing an arm around Steve's shoulders. "Now we have some more people to avenge. Come on. We need to get to the city and regroup." Bruce piped up from the Hulkbuster.

"They awkwardly said the purpose of the team! Twice! Don't you like that, reader? The reference?"

IIRC, the only time in the actual movie that Tony references avenging as a verb is during his angry, mocking rant at Cap. Once in the 2012 movie, and even then Tony knows it's awkward. Once in AOU, while Ultron is making a dramatic speech. Not at all in IW. (Incidentally, Thanos seems to be trying to "avenge" his home planet, in a twisted way.)

A few paragraphs later, we learn that the Snapped folks are in the Soul Realm, and Dr. Strange's voice has "a mildly mystical tone".

Which he doesn't in the movies. At all.

In the next scene, it 'uses single quotes and italics to indicate thoughts' thing. I'm not sure the former the former was ever commonly used in "published" writing, but it could be useful if you only have access to plaintext and you don't know how to write 'inline' thoughts.

If you can use italics, you don't need the single quotes. I think a lot of people use both because they saw some other fic do it.

If the story is starting this badly, I'm not going to read 50,000+ words.
