Supernatural: Witch‘s Canyon
Posting everything in this book that i think you need to know, lets go!
Tumblr media
Summary:
Okay, so, the boys head to the Grand Canyon to solve a case of a fourty-year murder cycle. The spirits of variouse humans and animals alike attack the locals and they need to find out why and how to stop it.
It is set somewhere in Season two.
My opinion:
This was so much fun. Like, it was really like watching an episode, just a lot longer and with the magic ability to see into Sam and Deans (and a bunch of other characters) heads.
It also gave a little bit of a fanfiction vibe, just with the addidtion that everything is cannon and that all the random little facts and quotes are a real thing (i‘ll list those in a second)
And also there were flashbacks of their childhood??? That made me cry??? I hated john winchester before, but now even more so. (More about the flashbacks below too)
So yea, it was definetly worth it and i cant wait to read the others!!
Songs:
This is the music Sam and Dean listened to during the course of the book (some locals listened to music too, but i did not list those)
- „paranoid“ by Black Sabbath
- „turn the page“ by Bob Seger
- unspecified tape by Bad Company
Flashbacks:
There are two flashbacks to Sam and Dean‘s Childhood:
- the first one is Dean Remembering a time when John made him and Sam run through an obstacle course at age twelve and eight. Dean had to shoot a gun during it, Sam just had to point and yell „Bang!“.
In the process of that Sam got injured and cried and John yelled at him to keep going and that he was doing poorly. Dean comforted his brother and encouraged him, leading to sam actually making it. Sam did it and Dean cheered, but john kept yelling at them to keep going to the next obstacle.
- the second one was from when Dean was fourteen and Sam was ten. Their Dad gave them backbags and said what was in them could last them fir four days and they all went on a hike together.
In the middle of nowhere john then saud that they should not trust anyone on what they are told and left them alone, telling them that they should find their way (at very least two days of walk) back themsleves and they shouldnt have relied on him so much and he just… left.
When they checked their backbags they found that most in it was useless and they were also filled with rocks to make it seem like it was more than it was.
Thats so fucked up, like
Those are children. And the worst part, when Dean rememvers this he thinks of it almost positively because it taught him a valuable lesson. I cant even begin to describe how my heart hurt for them.
Random facts:
Here are some facts from the book, i do t know anymor if those are mentioned in the show too, but it hardly matters, i think:
- Sam outgrew Dean at the age of 16
- Dean felt gutity over Jessicas death and thought that it was a „more solid basis“ of guilt than Sam had on the matter
- Sam can differentiate between uniforms of different wars in history just by a look
- Dean hates Rats. A lot.
Quotes:
Some quotes from the book:
John Winchester hunted monsters, ghosts, demons — the creatures most people only believed in deep down in their 3:00 am hearts, abd that they laughted off when the sun was bright and their spirits high.
It was a habit Dean had picked up from Dad — reffering to what they did as a „job“. To Sam it was nore of a Mission, even a calling.
„Sammy really likes cops,“ Dean said. „If he didnt have any talents he might have become one“
Sometimes he thought Dean wouldnt mind dying if he could go out in a blaze of glory, as the saying went. In moments of fairness, Sam knew that wasnt true. Dean didnt care about the glory; he cared about making a difference.
„I‘m coming around to the point, Sam.“ „He‘s Dean,“ Sam corrected. „I‘m Sam“. „Sorry, For some reason, you just look more like a Dean to me“
Gilmore Girls reference?
„You tried to shoot my brother“ Dean said.
Sam belived in a highter power, Dean didnt. Sam didnt have any special knowledge that Dean lacked, handt seen or heard or met God.
Lol, not yet.
Dean had been a kid, hadnt ever had a chance to become anything other than what Dad had made of him. That, finally, was the gulf between them — the canyon that could never be bridged.
Dean was an amazing guy, Sam knew, with skills and abilities most people would never imagine, and smarts Dean himself wouldnt credit, even though he relied on them all the time. And yet, at times like this, he was so humble, so unassuming, that he seemed almost unaware of the importance if his iwn contributions. At other times, of course, that humility vanished. Knowing and accepting both Deans, he guessed, was what being brothers was all about. Maybe I wouldnt want to be Dean, he thought, but i‘m sure glad I have him araound.
STOP MAKING MY CRY WTH
So anyways, that book sure was an experiance and i cant wait for the next one! I‘ll post a review of that as well and will update that post with a link to it one i‘m done!
Xoxo! <3

i’ve never been as angry on behalf of a character as i am for sam winchester
#currently thinking about season four and five. absolutely fuckibg mental#the world literally reshapes itself around him to prove him wrong#its all framed as God. Sam was so stupid and selfish and reckless for drinking demon blood. He just liked the power of it and he chose a#DEMON over DEAN.#but. that’s not the story they tell in s4.#like even aside from every single other complexity. Sam is literally right. he has ZERO WAY of knowing that killing lilith is the final seal#AND DEAN DOESNT KNOW TJAT EITHER. like sam is literally right he can kill lilith and he does kill lilith. dean wants lilith dead just as#much. sam’s cardinal sin is disobeying dean and then the world flips around on him and plot twist sam and dean were both wrong all along and#killing lilith is what will bring back lucifer :)#but. it’s not framed like that either. it’s framed like SAM BROUGHT BACK LUCIFER BY KILLING LILITH WHILE HIGH ON DEMON BLOOD#dean you wanted to kill lilith too?????????#but. doesn’t matter dean despite being mostly motivated by jealous anger is retroactively proven to be Right#and sam is retroactively proven to be Wrong. he is bad#i just. jesus. sam’s not evil ever. he’s hardly even that fucking morally grey#and he still thinks there’s something wrong with him that he’s a freak that he’s inherently evil and needs to be purified#why?? cause of something fucked up that happened to him when he was a baby#and because he’s disobeyed his father and his brother and been angry at awful things that have happened to him#makes me feel fucking insane actually#no wonder narrative frames sam as evil no wonder he’s inherently marked as Bad by the forces in supernatural like even on a meta level#in supernatural gods just another shitty father. embodiment of the familial patriarch. and from sam’s very first moment on the show he’s in#opposition to that he’s ran away from john and he argues with dean. therefore he is evil#i don’t think my words r really making sense right now but. fucking hell#and sam is so swamped in guilt all of season five and he just fucking accepts that everything bad is his fault#and he gets tortured in the cage to save the fucking world and it’s STILL not enough. not to appease his own guilt and not to appease deans#anger at him. dean is still throwing his perceived violations back at him in like season nine!!#and whenever he tries to get out it’s treated as yet another Sin. narrative acts like sam thinking dean was dead and having a life outside#of hunting is The Worst Thing He Ever Did#worst sin sam ever commits in the eyes of the show is disobedience. Absolutely awful actually#spn#sam winchester

AU where Sam and Dean find out they have an 11 month old half brother a year after John Winchester's death. And worst of all, his mum is just about 20.
I need the angst, the anger and the fucked up situation of it all.
When they first meet the girl, she's a waitress at a shitty dinner in a random town, serving Dean his greasy burger and Sam his salad. She looks so terribly young and exhausted despite the polite customer service smile and laughs she lets out.
She's pretty and Dean throws one of his charming grins her way and flirts with her, watching her trying to keep it professional and scribble aggressively their orders in her little notepad. Sam kicks him under the table, feeling bad for the girl. And then she leaves, but without Dean's eyes following her until she disappears to the back.
Then her manager gets brutally mauled in the diner by the monster of the week after closing hours and Dean and Sam investigate the scene. They spend a night after the other following each of her co-workers back to their homes, watching over them and for the beast to strike. Nothing happened, not a single peep from the monster. And so the next night was her turn to be stalked by the brothers in the dead of night, parked not far away from the filthy and run-down apparently she calls home.
They wait, and wait, taking turns walking around the building in case anything pops up. Until a screams makes them run up the stairs with weapons in hand, breaking the door without a second thought. Bullets fly and sobs gets louder and louder from the poor waitress, curled on the floor against the wall. When the thing's dead and it's all over, Dean tries to get her to stop crying, until he realises it wasn't her sobbing but a little baby boy clutched to her chest and he gets hit with hauntingly familiar eyes and dark hair.
Sam helps the girl up when Dean is all but frozen, still dripping with sweat and hair stuck in every direction and smelling of the impala and shitty coffee.
The girl shushes her babyboy, trying to stop her body from trembling and trying to rip her eyes away from the disgusting sight in the middle of her flat, blood soaking most of the wooden floorboard at their feet.
It takes them a while to all calm down, sitting in the other side of the flat, on her bed with her babyboy still in her arms. Her eyes look foogy, they have that far away look in them, her hair sticking in all directions and her thin t-shirt falling of one shoulder, blood drops drying on her barefeet from the chaos.
"Who are you? You're not FBI.." She whispers, looking up at Sam and Dean with a sad and scared face, a face that only begs to be hugged and protected from all dangers of the world.
"We're hunters, we help get rid of-- monsters." Sam explains, trying and failing to give her a reassuring smile, unable to look at her in the eyes for too long.
"How old are you?" Dean suddenly asks and she feels scared, his tone empty of any comfort.
Sam doesn't say anything but looks at Dean, frustration, anger and fear swimming behind his tired eyes.
"Why?" She asks, eyes flitting between the two in fear.
"Answer the question." Dean repeats.
"Dean," Sam says, unsure what he's even trying to do. He wants to know too, this couldn't be a coincidence at all, the little boy looks a lot like their father and them for that matter.
"I'm," She clears her throat, "I'm 20."
"Fuck," Dean says and all but collapses on her bed, sitting with his elbows on his knees, Gun still in hand while his hands covered his face.
"What?" She says, eyes wide. "What does that have to do with anything?" She quickly asks, defensive and scared at the same time, looking at Sam, eyes begging for answers.
"Who's his dad?.." Sam asks and gulps, watching her while Dean has a breakdown next to her on the bed.
"Uhm... It was a one night stand and I didn't bother looking for his dad-- But I don't understand-"
"Just answer the question." Sam cuts her off, making her flinch. He grimaces at her reaction and adds a, "Please..." Just for good measure.
She looks down at her babyboy sleeping against her chest, and back up at Sam, "He said his name was John."
And Sam throws up right then and there.

One thing about SPN is that there is a huge emphisis on having disfunctional families, and things like parental issues (lots of focus on those daddy issues) and so many characters have to work to overcome their trauma with parental figures (INCLUDING SAM AND DEAN) And then the writers had the gall to make Dean treat Jack like THAT.
You know what I mean? Dean treated Jack like shit in the beginning, like what happened to 'family don't end in blood, but it doesn't start there either' huh? So many times in SPN we see people overcoming their parental set backs, and being different than their families want them to be, or "against their nature" and Dean has seen it and done it himself, so why did't he think Jack could? This is also building on the fact that Dean is the one that is good with kids, Dean is always the one to interact with, comfort, etc. with kids, and even after all of that the writers still made him treat Jack, a kid with a bad situation, like he was evil.

Can you come up with some Trapper and Charles scenarios?
oh i sure can
— i thjnk i’ve mentioned this before , but i like to think that trap and charles have kind of a breakthrough when they’re both drunk and they don’t know how they get on the subject but they start talking about their favorite boston hangouts . charles is surprised that trapper’s been in some more high - class places and trapper is the first one to hear charles admit that’s he’s been in the cheaper hangouts
— this is such a common trope but trapper moving all of charles’ shit one inch to the left every couple weeks until charles actually catches him at it and trapper’s just sitting there trying not to laugh while charles berates him
— trapper mocking charles’ posh accent and being obnoxiously ( fake ) offended when charles finally stoops to mocking his
— i have this idea that like maybe trapper has a moment where he’s like i’m a shitty dad because i’m not there for my kids and charles ( who ACTUALLY had a shitty dad , if i ever see that motherfucker it’s on SIGHT ) in his own charles way , ( not outright , of course ) , tells trapper he’s a good dad
— there is just so much potential between neat charles and slob trapper ,, to type out everything would take up WAY too much space but imagine what you will >:]
— working together in the o.r with backhanded compliments ( “ you’re not nearly as sloppy as i thought you were , mcintyre “ thanks charles , maybe they’ll put my name on the doctor of the year plaque next to yours . we’ll make the speech together , you use the big words and i’ll provide the looks . “ )
— charles regularly referring to trapper as “ john francis xavier “ to annoy him , trap regularly calling charles “ king charles “ in the horrible british accent
— there was a sudden disappearance of trapper’s dirty mags for a spell and it’s suspected that charles was the culprit
— trapper referring to charles by saying “ he’s one of the best ! “ to reassure one of the patients and then telling said patient that he’ll put him back on the table if he ever repeated that he said that
— there are definitely a ton more i could come up with , but alas my brain is fried

controversial onion but i have beyond reached the point of finding Blame John Winchester for Everything totally and utterly boring like first of all there’s a lot more nuance to his character and motivations than people seem willing to or even capable of understanding and second of all there are plenty of adults who had shitty upbringings and rose above because at a certain point in life you’re an adult, your behavior is your own responsibility, and a shitty upbringing isn’t an excuse for shitty behavior. also possibly even more controversial onion but mary was at least as responsible if not more so for salmondean’s childhood. aaaand send post

Rooting for characters to be good for good’s sake is boring. I’m real so I have to be good for good’s sake which is okay, but fuck if I need my characters in made up realities that don’t exist to be good even when the world is bad to them or they have the opportunity to be more interesting as monsters or tyrants or just straight up assholes. Ship people who are toxic. Fuck monsters. Kill people. Have fun. It’s fiction, that’s the point. Do what you have to do to be a good person in the real world who doesn’t do shitty things to other people or support people who do shitty things.

its so crazy that what we actually see of the winchesters childhood in the show is INCREDIBLY bleak. just awful. but listening to dean and sam talk about it like even in the later seasons you'd just think they didn't really get on with their parents. as late as season TEN dean is still going 'haha yeah dad raised us right'. like oh my god. dean. you are SO damaged. every single problem you have including all the ones you take out on other people that ruin your life and your relationships can be traced back to ur father using you as perfect son and obedient soldier and surrogate wife and telling you family is everything and sam is selfish and bad for wanting things and still also flying into drunken rages whatever that means and terrifying you. (the way literally one of those things would be insanely damaging and its this mishmash of all which makes everythng like 10000x worse... child abuse squared.... insane). and dude is acting like his dad was like. A bit mean sometimes but essentially a nice guy :) and the show rarely directly comments on this (past like s3 when you get him screaming I DIDNT DESERVE THE SHIT HE PUT ON ME) or on the fact that sam and dean are not whatsoever to be trusted when they talk about their childhoods and it was usally 100x worse than whatever they say. which means i truly think people dont really GET it no matter how much they 'hate john winchester'. but fucking christ it was awful

Title:  Artificial Lullabye
Series: Supernatural B-Sides, pt 2
Author:  BJ
Fandom:  Supernatural
Rating:  Teen
Pairing:  John Winchester/Mary Winchester
Synopsis:  We all know Hey Jude is what Mary sang to her babies as a lullabye. It's a good choice, you can na-na forever until the kid calms down. John, being half a macho bastard and with different tastes in music, would probably sing something a little bit different.
Tags:  John Winchester, Mary Winchester, Baby Dean, Songfic, Teething Babies Are Evil, John's Not A Complete Bastard
AN:  Song is "Hootchie Cootchie Man," written by Willie Dixon and covered by Steppenwolf on their self-titled album. Before anybody says anything, Mildred Winchester's Universal Teething Cure isn't recommened because alcohol is poison-- use whatever gum medicine your pediatrician recommends. All recognizable intellectual properties are owned by their respective creators and holders of any copyrights or trademarks. This is a not-for-profit work of fan art and protected by Fair Use.
---
Asleep on his feet, John shuffled down the hall towards the shrieking of all the damned souls of Hell.  Funny, he reflected, of all the times Mary had threatened to run away and join the circus since having the baby, it was only after the little fiend started teething that he'd started to worry she might actually do it.  Funny too, of all the skills bashed into his head in Basic the ability to function while effectively dead was proving most useful in life as a husband and father.
Making shushing noises, John crossed the nursery to the crib under the window, where his firstborn son wailed in agony to the heavens above.  If angels really were watching, poor bastards must be getting an earful.  "C'mere, Deano," John said, lifting Dean and settling him on his chest.  Did the little rat calm down in the protective circle of his father's arms, lulled by the steady beat of a heart under his tiny pink ear?  Hell no.  Assured of a captive audience, Dean screamed straight into John's ear.  "Thanks kiddo, I can still hear out of that side," he muttered dryly.  "Let's go downstairs before your mother wakes up and bitches me out.  Again."
Down in the kitchen, John held Dean in one arm and used the other to assemble Mildred Winchester's Universal Teething Cure-- a glass of Four Roses on the rocks.  He dipped his finger into the chilled bourbon and slipped the finger into Dean's tiny mouth.  He winced as Dean bit down with his sharp new teeth.  Three on top and two on the bottom so far.  The demon spawn that had replaced his placid infant son had already drawn blood with the damned things.  God help him, John had come close to slapping Mary when she smacked Dean's nose while feeding him the other day.  He hadn't gotten it until she'd shown him the tiny tooth cuts on her nipple.
"Lesson number one," John said, massaging his cold whiskey-moist finger against Dean's feverish gums, "is real men never hurt girls.  Especially not that one."  Another dip and thank all the heavenly blessings Dean's howling tapered to sniffles.  A frozen waffle for gnawing and a quick wipe with John's handkerchief, Dean looked almost himself again, peering out at the world with his huge green eyes.  His paternal grandmother's eyes, and didn't Mom just love that?  Not like his own dark brown eyes -- a gift from Grandpa Solomon -- or Deanna Campbell's aquamarine.
He frowned.  For some reason, when he tried to think of meeting and talking with his in-laws, the memories felt strange in his head.  Like he'd been high at the time.
Hah.  Show up to the Campbell house bombed equals fancy way to scrag yourself.  Samuel Campbell had detested John on sight and John knew full well he'd never wavered from that judgement.
Dean started to fuss.  "Sorry Deano," John said, bringing his attention back to the present.  "Just me thinks."
John drank off the whiskey and stuck the glass in the sink.  Upstairs, he changed Dean and started to put Dean down in the crib.  Dean let out a little whine and John sighed.  On top of everything else, the boy was a slow sleeper.  Putting him straight down was just asking for a repeat performance.  "Can't never make things easy on your old man," he sighed, blissfully unaware of the coming years in which the scrap in his arms would become his only barricade between sanity and madness.  John settled Dean with his son's little face in the crook of his neck and shoulder and started pacing.  The Impala would put him under in a New York Minute, but he'd exchange a crabby baby for a crabby wife, and given a choice--
Well it wasn't like Mary was the only one of them who could run away and join the circus.  Maybe they could drop Dean off at Mom's and make it a mutual thing.  Goodbye son, hello sequined tights.  See ya when he hits college.
"Gypsy woman told my mother . . . 'fore I was born . . . you gotta boychild comin' . . . gonna be a real sonofagun . . ." John sang under his breath, keeping his steps short and gently bouncing to the blues riff.  "Gonna make the pretty womens . . . jump and shout," God it was a fucking miracle, Dean lay quiet in John's arms, waffle forgotten in his mouth, wide eyes turned up to John.  John grinned.
"Cuz you know I'm him . . ." he did a little reverse-step.  "EVER-ry body knows I'm him . . ." remembering Mary feather-light in his arms as they danced at that old honky-tonk outside Jackson, Steppenwolf blaring from the jukebox and realizing he'd fallen like a sack of mail.  "I'm your hootchie-coochie man . . ." God, Dean's little baby smile looked a lot like Mary's, sweet but with that edge, the one that told the world screw around with me at your own risk, "everybody knows I'm here."
He stuck to humming the next verse, and if he threw in a few dancing twirls nobody but God had to know.  If it got Dean to Dreamland he'd drop trou and do the funky chicken.
Yeah, John thought to himself, holding his son a little tighter.  No tinny music box tinkling out a cheap dime replica of a lullaby for his kids.  No disappearing into thin fucking air out of fucking nowhere, leaving Dean alone to be the man of the house.  It still blew John's mind that one day the tiny thing cuddled into him will be a man someday.
Just love him, Johnny, Mildred had told him, the first time she held her grandson in her arms.  Start with that and the rest will follow.
"Yes ma'am," John muttered.  "On the seventh hours . . . on the seventh day . . . the seventh month . . . seven doctors say . . ."
Mary cleared her throat from the doorway and John looked over his shoulder, meeting her tired smile with his own and holding a finger in front of his lips.  "He was born for good luck . . . and that you will see . . ."  Gentle as though he were disabling a landmine, John laid a snorting Dean down in the crib.  "I got seven hundred dollars, so don't you mess with me."   Dean let out a couple sleepy squirms and settled, his mouth curved in a tiny baby smile.  John chuckled a little.  Put it next to his Vietnam Service Medal-- I made my kid smile.
Turning to his wife, John pitched his voice low.  Suggestive.  "But," he pointed at Mary, "you know I'm him," Mary smothered a laugh with one hand, "everybody knows," John jerked a thumb back at himself, "I'm him.  I'm your hootchie-cootchie man," his arm went around Mary.  John kissed her neck where it made her giggle, breathing in her scent of clean hair and soft perfume and just a hint of milk, "Everybody knows, I'm him."
Mary checked on Dean.  She gave John a thumbs-up and tiptoed out.
"Should we ever tell him why you're singing that to him?" Mary asked.
John grinned.  "Sure.  When he's old enough to learn how to drive it."  Maybe they should make a pilgrimage to the bridge they'd been parked underneath that night.  He kissed Mary and pulled her close.
Mary melted under his touch for a few delicious minutes, then gently urged John still.  She yawned.  "Down boy."
"Yes ma'am."  Hand in hand, they went back up the hallway.
One whole step.  Then from behind they heard the tattletale tiny whines and snorts.  John shut his eyes and said something he picked up from the Island.  Mary rolled her eyes heavenword and said something she got from her sailor uncle.  Dean made up in volume what he lacked in vocabulary.
Mary looked at John.  John looked at Mary.  Together, they weighed their love for one another and their love for their son.
John threw Paper, Mary threw Rock.  Groaning, Mary turned on her heel and went to confront the Beast.  John stood and just listened for a long moment.  A corner of his mouth lifted in a wry smile.  Up to his neck in picket fence wholesomeness and it felt good.
I'm a high school dropout who doesn't amount to much, John said to himself.  And I'm going to have to make it up as I go.  But I swear my son will grow up knowing what a man should be, because I'm going to be right there to show him.  Dean I promise-- you'll never doubt how much your daddy loves you.  Not ever.
---
Four years later, John will sit on a cot in a fire station with a howling infant and a silent little boy, the last of his wife leaving him as the smell of smoke fades from his clothes.  Dean still has Sammy in his arms and is pacing and bouncing, the way he's seen Mary do when Sammy fusses but of course he's pacing too fast and bouncing too hard.  He's too young to know babies need finesse.  The John Winchester that would've picked up both his boys and held them close is disappearing too and somehow Dean knows it.  John doesn't do anything but stare at nothing as the fire department's secretary coaxes Dean into slowing down.  She reshapes Dean's arms to cradle Sammy properly and shows him how to sway in that special soothing way.  John can't do anything but be distantly grateful.  At least Sammy's calming down.
Both of his sons will say later that for all intents and purposes John died when he found Mary burning alive over Sam's crib.  The reality is, John died when the secretary turned the radio on Low and his children spent their first night without their mother falling asleep to an artificial lullabye.
---
AN2: Wow, this went to an angsty place. I just re-watched S8E12, 'As Time Goes By,' and it explains a lot about John-- why he made the choices he did, why he absolutely refused to home-base the boys with Pastor Jim or Bobby, and why he never really acknowledged the damage he was doing to his sons. It's the question people raised by troubled parents have to grapple with all their lives; John did the best he could, but how much does that justify? Or excuse?
