I started reading this Webtoon thinking I'd enjoy reading the first episodes, but then lose interest after a while and stop reading, like I usually do. But it didn't happen. Instead, this became one of my favorite Webtoons. This was one hell of a ride and I'm so sad it's over, but I had a lot of fun while it was still going and it brought me and lots of other people a lot of happiness. I'm so proud of all the characters, who all matured throughout their journey, and of Jimena, for creating one of the best stories I've ever seen. Thank you so much for the laughs and the crying and all the emotions I felt while reading your comic! ♡♡♡

The Worst Woman in London
Tumblr media
The Worst Woman in London had fabulously strong opening chapters, but by the end, one incredibly odd choice on the part of the author ruined what should have been my first 5-star romance read of the year. What I liked; I really liked Francesca. She is so self-possessed and knows herself. She isn't perfect or perfectly strong, but she's strong in a realistic way. I loved how Bennet contrasted her public and private "faces" so well--it felt SO true to the period and made me seriously question any previous desire to time travel to the Victorian era. I also liked James as an independent character. He also felt so true to the time, and his character arc made sense, though I felt it was rather rushed in the end. The problem: about halfway through the book, Bennet makes the choice to begin opening up the POV so it's no longer the dual 3rd person POVs of our hero and heroine. Instead, we now have the ex's POV and a debutante's. I can see WHY she wanted all these. It helps us make sense of Edward's motivations--loathsome though they are--and Bennet, thankfully, doesn't ever try to make them palatable. Just wants us to see how and why he thinks and acts how he does. Sylvia's POV is to give us a an additional female POV to Francesca's: someone who is also struggling against society's expectations. But here's the thing. Because now page are dedicated to secondary characters' POVs, it a) takes away from the time spent with our main characters, and for me, that took away momentum and sucked passion out of the pages. James' and Francesca's relationship ended up being weaker for it.
SPOILER UNDER THE CUT
It allowed Edward to be humanized and have a happy ending. Edward never truly gets his just desserts for his treatment of Fran, and sure, that's how history would have gone for him, but this isn't a history book. It's a romance book. Call me petty, but I want my bad guys to get their comeuppance. I did not WANT him to have a happy ending.
For all that, it is a good, engaging read. I'm interested to read more of Bennet's work after this. Thank you to NetGalley and Union Square & Co for the ebook ARC. All opinions are mine alone.

i can’t stress enough just how much i long for failure characters. Damaged ones, but not in the sense that something horrible has happened to them. They have absolutely no idea why they are so fucked up. They could be better, so much better, they really could, but they’re not. They’re failures, they rot and waste time and they can feel their insides churning. We have this taboo about people and characters like that, as if somebody who isn’t remarkable isn’t worthy. As if someone deserves praise and love only if they’re extraordinary.
I love and relate to characters who just hate themselves for no reason, or many reasons, but nothing concrete, nothing to pin-point. Nothing specific. Everything and nothing. They’re mad at the world, but they don’t know why. They are unsatisfied and they seek something more, but they’re too tired and hate themselves too much to try. These are real experiences that real people have, and pretending that they are not, demonising them, is so brutal and like- not cool.
I’m speaking as a person who’s spent their entire life searching for something more, hating myslef for just existing, hating the world around me because however much i had to offer, it was never enough. I’ve always been a perfectionist, but i’ve started to get really tired and pissed. I’ve started to slack off at the most vital point of my life. I’m just tired and i want to give up. But i can’t. But for the first time i want or need to. But i can’t because i already hate who i am too much- so giving up now would mean that id have to try again and stay behind. Which is cool, but painful for my self-esteem.
It’s not that i aspire to be the character-failures. But i am a character failure. I’ve always looked up to characters such as Hermione Granger, Annabeth Chase, Anne Shirley, Elizabeth bennet etc, you know, really smart, intellectual, opinionated, badass characters. I share qualities with them and i’ve tried so hard to only make these shine that i’ve suppressed everything else. Or i’ve tried to. It’s all slipping up. It’s all a lie. I’d cry myself to sleep because i wasn’t as smart as hermione at 12, though people would say i was, but i wanted to be more, i wanted to be more than even her. I wanted to be her at her fullest, always. But i wasn’t. I’m not that character, i am a character-failure.
And seeing characters who are clumsy and smart, nerdy but also fucked up (IM LOOKING AT YOU MIKE WHEELER), characters with so many flaws, most people hate them, i- i feel close to them in a most remarkable way. Characters like Julia from luca, always second though she’d tried so hard, characters like todd anderson, too afraid to know themselves, characters like remus lupin, aristotle mendoza, katie mitchell, luca, james wilson, robin buckley and so many more. Characters who feel real. Not that all the others don’t, but something about how fucked up they are really appeals to me. Like- even someone this broken, crooked, wrong can be so loved. Maybe there’s still hope.

The Smith Family Album: Volume XV
Tumblr media
Eating for two.
Tumblr media
Those back rubs that Bennet has been perfecting since his teenage years are really paying dividends now.
Tumblr media
Taking it easy, with a good book. Although their little office will soon have to be converted into a nursery!
Tumblr media
Hungry again.
Tumblr media
Bennet is possibly more excited about his next promotion than impending fatherhood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But that all changes when he finally meets his son, Benedict, who has his dark brown eyes (confirming the baby's paternity 😉).
Tumblr media
Harriet is also delighted to meet her new grandson.
Tumblr media
His birthday comes around very quickly - I'm loving the combination of dad's eyes with mum's nose. 😊
~ Sagittarius 5 / 9 / 8 / 8 / 8
~ Born Performer / Bookworm
~ OTH: Music & Dance
Tumblr media
He's a bit of a prodigy - learning to talk in no time at all.
Tumblr media
And musically gifted too!
Tumblr media
Anna is also keen to introduce him to books from an early age - although maybe it might be wiser not to do so while carrying him down the stairs?
Tumblr media
Unexpectedly becoming parents in middle age has meant that their path through life - especially from Anna's perspective - has necessarily taken an abrupt turn, and they're now spending more time as a couple with Anna's best friend Julia and her husband Crawford. Although, being rather Eccentric, Crawford does have a tendency to say things that other Sims - even his wife - find a little controversial at times.
Tumblr media
Bennet's mum and dad - Lizzy and Henry - are much less challenging company, and also very keen to get to know their grandson. Well, Henry is possibly more interested in the wide-screen TV at this juncture...

Jane Austen: Too Much of a Good Thing
Sorry I'm ranting.
Uff. I've had it. I have just decided that I'm fed up.
I'm sick of Jane Austen.
There. I've said it.
Seriously, what’s the matter? You can’t go a step without stumbling over Jane Austen and her characters.
In particular, Pride and Prejudice. It’s a good novel but these days I come across it in social media so often I can’t stand it anymore. There is just no escape. No fandom seems to be without an Austen crossover and / or reference.
For the record:
The overused dialogues between the two protagonists count up to five. Elizabeth spends more time thinking about Darcy and speaking about him than actually interacting with him.
Elisabeth was uninterested in Darcy and even annoyed at him until she saw his beautiful grounds at Pemberley. (She’s so not materialistic, oh no, she loves him purely for himself.)
The infamous scene where he turns up at her place to make an impassioned declaration of love drenched in rain is from a movie. It doesn’t appear in the novel at all.
Fitzwilliam is not exactly an exciting name. Does anyone believe he likes being called “Oh, Mr Darcy” in the bedroom?
Jane Austen is a fine novelist. I have read all of her works. That doesn’t mean she’s the only good writer when it comes to romance, not even historical romance. Whether she’s the best is up to anybody’s guess (and taste).
I have decided that I will quit reading fanfiction or meta's of any kind as soon as the name “Austen” or one of the titles of her novels or names of her characters drop.
Please. Read something else. Watch something else. Quote someone else.
There is Georgette Heyer (I love the absurd situations she sometimes depicts), the Brontë sisters, George Eliot. I loved Daphne duMaurier's Rebecca, and L.M. Montgomery's The Blue Castle.
Other authors of historical / Regency romances are Barbara Cartland, Julia Quinn, Kathleen Baldwin, Mary Balogh, Carla Kelly, Candice Hern.
Too much of the same kind of food makes you sick. Jane Austen is certainly making me feel sick by now.
Or at least, someone please explain to me where this obsession comes from, because I certainly can’t. All I know is that I’m fed up.
Seriously: if I ever quote or refer to anything from Jane Austen from now on, except for bashing her, you’re welcome to beat me up.
Good night.

Does that Jane Austen heroine like Taylor Swift?
Elizabeth Bennet - Of course she listens to Taylor Swift! She has five sisters! She was a fan of the earlier albums, but her younger sisters keep her up to date now. Mr. Bennet retreats to the library when they all start to sing Love Story (Mary pretends to be above Taylor Swift, but everyone knows the truth)
Jane Bennet - was never that into Taylor Swift until after Bingley left, then she spent a few weeks privately crying over every bittersweet breakup song
Catherine Morland - loves Taylor Swift, her and Mrs. Allen sang along all the way to Bath. Hasn't discovered any Gothic music yet, but Isabella will help with that
Elinor Dashwood - She's a casual fan, knows enough of the lyrics to sing along
Marianne Dashwood - she used to listen to Taylor Swift, before she knew what good music was, now she listen exclusively to indie artists and tries to get Margaret into them. Margaret is a total Swiftie
Emma Woodhouse - loves Taylor Swift, but despite being able to afford it, cannot go to a concert because the very idea scares her father. Her "improvement" plans for Harriet often just turn into writing snippets of their favourite lyrics in Harriet's quote book
Fanny Price - loves Taylor Swift, but when Mrs. Norris "moved heaven and earth" to get Eras tour tickets, she only bought them for herself, Maria, and Julia (with Sir Thomas's money). Fanny stayed home with Lady Bertram
Anne Elliot - she doesn't listen to Taylor Swift, she mostly enjoys classical music, but she'd never be mean about it. If asked, she'd say she admired Taylor Swift's commitment as an artist
(This AU assumes that the heroines are their proper ages now, in 2025, so Elizabeth Bennet was born in 2004 for example)

This unique bonnet is a great example of how drastically lighting can change the look of a piece!   It was spotted on Lucy Robinson as Mrs. Elton in the 1996 ITV adaptation of 𝑬𝒎𝒎𝒂. But did you know it didn’t originate there?   In 1995, Julia Sawalha wore it to portray Lydia Bennet in 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒋𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒆!   However, the piece almost certainly originated with the 1994 film 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒐, in which Wendy Hughes wore it as Mrs.Worrell.   Find out who else wore it at Bit.ly/Acces163

There's a new documentary Croíthe Radacacha (Radical Hearts) set to air on TG4 on December 6th about the many lesbian couples who were involved in the 1916 Rising and The Irish War of Independence. I'm so excited because this is such a neglected part of Irish history and something like this has been my dream!
It's to include Eva Gore Booth & Esther Roper; Elizabeth O' Farrell & Julia Grenan; Helena Molony & Evelyn O’Brien; Margaret Skinnider & Nora O’Keeffe; Kathleen O’Brennan & Marie Equi; Kathleen Lynn & Madeline Ffrench-Mullen and Louie Bennet & Helen Chenevix.
