Reverse Unpopular Opinion: tell me what you love about Saw

Takes your hands. We are going on a journey. I'm probably doing the reverse unpopular opinion thing wrong but ❤️ it's 5 am by me. we deal.

Personally I like that some of the traps are done with practical effects, much to the detriment of the VERY ENTHUSIASTIC cast who are surprisingly chill with almost drowning IRL and/or having to suffer through wearing 30+ lbs of jagged steel while having the flu and/or actually being stuck in the shackle prop because there was a malfunction while everybody else goes for lunch and/or requesting real glass for the stunt scenes and insisting on throwing real punches in the stunt fights because they're a masochistic freak of an actor (the masochism isn't the bad part, the EVERYTHING ELSE about him sucks) Some of the worst traps and effects are when they use cgi. Looks bad, tom.

I also appreciate that the through-line of the movie is not only justice (and the malformations of it) but also love. Love is what drives the characters to do what they do!! At least three of the apprentices/jigsawers do what they do because they are doing it for love of another person!! And not even romantic love for most of them. I love that the fandom has led me to more friendships and sparked more creativity in me that was lacking for a while. I love that the cast list is just random b-c list actors and also Greg Bryk is there and every time I see him I get jumpscared. I love that it gave me an idea for a tattoo (original idea do not steal!!!) where it'll say "do you like how brutality feels?" but in the shape of a spiral and I kinda wanna get it on the inside of my forearm.

As the adage goes, one must cultivate their online experience because there are some WEIRD ASS headcanons out there. That being said, I love and appreciate the people who are normal about the fat characters. I love that people banded together against an artist who was very adamant and weird about drawing fat characters (which there are a few) like twinks. I wish they kept that energy going. I LOVE that seeing a specific fat character and the way he's built/the way people draw him voluptuously (😂) gives me so much gender euphoria. I love when people acknowledge this character as an erudite and well-dressed man with an art degree and a secret passion for home remodeling (this is canon) who also happens to be a fat man. Like fat people are real three dimensional human beings or something. He's also super deranged and mows down like 70+ people at once in a spree that ends in him stuck and trapped, possibly killed and possibly just held captive by a cunty evil doctor in the basement of his own home like how in the Sims game where you make somebody live in the basement and paint constantly so you can make money selling the paintings.

I love how a few months ago on Twitter the fandom came together to mourn as the bot that goes through the script line by line came to a particularly devastating part and that stupid image of the cat puppet from the OLD Dr Who

I did my final in my religion in film class about Saw and used the following image. My professor and classmates were wowed.

ooo that’s a tough question, it really depends. favorite game of all time is probably red dead redemption 2, got me all in my feels and i’ve replayed the story (which is long as hell) about 3 times. like i had 700+ hours on that game before i finally got over how much i loved it. the story is beautifully devastating, even after i got the ending spoiled for myself i was thinking “well at least it won’t be that sad when i get to the end right?” yeah no i was bawling when i finished the game for the first time.

the spider-man games are also near and dear to my heart bc he’s been my fave since i was a little kid and i’ve also played those over and over again over a span of 2 years. finished the first game’s story three times, mile’s game three times, and im on my third play of sm2 as we speak. if you’re going “omg do you have a life???” the answer is definitely no.

as for dc, arkham knight is definitely my favorite. love the gameplay, love the story, love how immersive it is. every boss fight with the arkham knight had me quaking in my boots. only thing getting me through it was troy baker’s voice acting and jason’s voice modulator but if i explained why then i’d have to send this to vee 😛 ANYWAY arkham knight is definitely up there in my top games i’ve played. i feel an urge to mention gotham knights and kill the justice league too but i wouldn’t call those my TOP games. i just really like gk bc i get to play as red hood & nightwing, and i like ktjl bc i love anyrhing to do with the suicide squad and harley quinn.

yk one thing i could never play though? survival mode in minecraft. idk what it is but i’d fight batman with my own two hands before trying to survive one night in mc. 🦦

dw i've logged 7982 hours on the sims since i got it so. yeah, i get it. also!! minecraft survival mode is so fucking scary like i would genuinely rather die than play survival mode alone. it's even scary when playing with other people like??? creative mode till the day i die

i've seen lots of clips of spiderman on twitter and tiktok, and i always like the vids of him swinging around the city. it's so visually pleasing to watch but i'm not sure what the games about exactly. ig my thing with a lot of games is i prefer a game where i have more creative liberty over games where i'm following a timeline/plot to reach an ending. story games! i enjoy watching them but i'm not a big fan of playing them bc it requires a lot of brain power i don't have :(

i've listened to all of troy bakers lines in arkham knight despite never having played the game or watched a full walkthrough. he absolutely ate tho, i hope that check was FAT.

Jury finds two men guilty of kidnapping bodybuilder

A jury has found two men guilty of kidnapping and perverting the course of justice at Auckland's High Court.

Khalid Naser Slaimankhel and Junior Iolima Paea were each convicted on a charge of kidnapping bodybuilder Marven Yacoub.

They were each found guilty on a charge of perverting the course of justice.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict in the case of Jen Jay Law, who faced a sole charge of kidnapping.

Slaimankhel showed no reaction when the verdict of guilty was handed down for the kidnapping charge but shook his head when the same verdict was announced on the perverting the course of justice charge. Paea showed no reaction to the verdicts.

After hearing nine days of evidence, an 11-person jury took just over a day to reach its verdicts. It was the third jury to hear the case. A first trial in May 2014 ended with a hung jury on all counts, while a second trial was aborted after four days when the jury heard information deemed likely to be prejudicial to Slaimankhel's fair trial rights.

The trial centered on whether victim Marven Yacoub's account of being accosted at a Burger King by Paea and two unknown associates and taken to law office in Ponsonby against his will to swear a false statement to be used in Slaimankel's bail hearing the following day could be believed.

The jury heard that Law lured Mr Yacoub to Burger King Mangere on the understanding that he would sell him steroids. Law admitted to police he purchased a new phone sim card to help avoid detection. On the day of the kidnapping he sent Mr Yacoub a text pretending to be inside the Burger King toilets but he was in fact at home in Hamilton.

Slaimankhel arranged for Paea and his associates to kidnap Mr Yacoub from the Burger King and take him to the office of his lawyer Isaac Koya to swear a statement taking responsibility for 1048 green steroid fat burner pills found in the boot of his BMW during a police stop 10 days earlier.

Slaimankhel was under police surveillance when he met Mr Yacoub in the Sylvia Park car park to take possession of the pills.

The jury was shown CCTV footage of the kidnapping, including the two unknown men taking up positions either side of Mr Yacoub and apparently parting their shirts to reveal gang insignia.

Mr Yacoub testified that Paea threatened to harm his family unless he did what he was told.

The defense contended the meeting was nothing more than an amicable meeting between friends and that Paea had driven Mr Yacoub to Ponsonby because he owed him $300, which he would be able to get from Slaimankhel, who still owed Mr Yacoub money for the steroid pills.

The defense painted Mr Yacoub as a liar and steroid dealer who had concocted his story to aid his chances of avoiding a criminal conviction after a raid on his house uncovered a cache of steroids in a shoe box.

Mr Yacoub's version of what happened at the law office was strongly rebutted by Mr Koya and another lawyer, Gary Gotlieb. Mr Yacoub testified that Slaimankhel had told him what to say in the statement while Paea continued to threaten him as Mr Koya typed on his computer. Slaimankhel and Paea had then hovered menacingly in the doorway while he signed the document in Mr Gotlieb's office.

Mr Koya testified that although it was against his normal practice he had allowed Slaimankhel and Paea to remain in the office. He had three times warned Slaimankhel to be quiet but Paea hadn't said a word and Mr Yacoub had made his statement willingly.

Mr Gotlieb said Mr Yacoub's claim that Mr Koya had been in his office while he swore the statement and that Slaimankhel and Paea had hovered in the doorway was wrong. The door had been shut and only he and Mr Yacoub had been in his office. Mr Yacoub had appeared relaxed, Mr Gotlieb testified.

The jury heard text message evidence that showed how the kidnapping had been planned and executed. Text messages found on Paea's phone were particularly damning. Two days before the kidnapping he sent a text to an unknown associate that read: "I Got a job for us Monday… And if it works out well will get paid on the spot my uso.."

Another text sent from Paea's phone to an unknown associate while Mr Yacoub was at the law office said: "Soon we at the lawyers better pray to the almighty to keep us safe my uso.. Cause I'm starting to feel very funny about this now."

Later that evening, the court heard Paea sent a text to Slaimankhel as the pair apparently discussed whether Mr Yacoub would appear as instructed at Slaimankhel's bail hearing. "Everything all goods," Paea texted.

"I think M will be there tomorrow because he knows that we now know his ins and outs and where he sleeps and the ones he loves will."

1) My current hardcore blorbos- as in, the characters that live in my head rent-free- are honestly mostly from Victory Belles, the shipgirl gacha I've been freelancing for. I basically get to write anime fanfic for work, and it's fantastic.

She's got a thing for sweets, a strong sense of justice, and a massive, massive case of the ADHDs. She loves toffee, friendship, blini, avoiding hard work, and the player character. She has a lot of growing up to do, but with your help, she can manage it, even in the middle of a war.

I love writing this kid so much and I wish the game wasn't in beta right now because I'd seriously shill the download link, y'all deserve to get to experience her with me.

I love Shakespeare's poetry, both in his sonnets and his plays- I love Full Fathom Five and Sonnet 130 and Lady Macbeth's "COME YOU SPIRITS" monologue and just about every one of Hamlet's soliloquies.

I love the Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark.

I love Dante Alighieri - I adore Inferno as both a story and a poem, and his other stuff is just as technically impressive.

I love Catullus. Though, honestly, his poem about his mistress's little bird that died is my favourite thing of his, I like it even more than the I WILL FACEFUCK YOU, ASSHOLES catty stuff

I love Tolkien's poetry. I love Beowulf and The Pearl, both of which I discovered through his poetry.

The Church Ladies outdid themselves for the dance. There wasn’t a surface to be seen in the hall that wasn’t bedecked in flora. It’s been absolutely cut-throat between them all and the atmosphere in church has been sizzling every Sunday for a month. Miss Lee and Mrs Yates are practically cutting each other dead. Still I must say it looked magnificent, like Titania’s bower. 

I felt sure I’d be a wall-flower all night, despite Daisy’s best efforts to remedy the pig’s ear I’d made of my hair, but Oliver Elbsen asked me to dance right away.

I overheard Myrtle Stephens make a cattish remark to Sybil Copeland about what gangly, red-headed babies we would have. The very thought sent a shiver down my spine. Still, I managed not to tread on his toes, or if I did he was too polite to say so. I was dreadfully afraid that I’d put one of my beastly French heels right through his foot.

Afterwards he insisted on fetching me a glass of punch as though I hadn’t two legs in perfect working order. (As well as they could work in those wretched shoes! When I think what they must have cost Mother I am racked with guilt for despising them.) We ‘sat out’ and talked of football and what he had read in the Boy’s Own. He supports Foxbury Town, I, of course, the ‘Windies’ (Windenburg Wanderers), and we had a heated but amiable debate. 

I was beginning to think we could be chums, although I would have much rather talked to Hon. Poor Hon! It seems so beastly unfair that I should dance, and hate it, when she would love to and isn’t allowed. I could tell she was sorry about it although she wouldn’t have let anyone see it for the world. What a brick she is. 

Dizzy was the belle of the ball, of course. There was scarcely a boy in Little Windenburg she didn’t dance with. She stopped by in between dances to fill me in on the pertinent happenings. Norman Dunn caught it with the Church Ladies for taking liberties with Midge Sheldon’s person- although Midge didn’t seem to mind the taking of the said liberties, and might be said to have given of them freely. (Not Daisy’s exact words.) Myrtle and Justice Bowlinger had danced together twice, and she looked like the cat who got the cream and was lording it over all the other girls. What a perfectly pompous pair they would make! I wish them joy of each other. 

I had almost begun to enjoy myself, in spite of the pinching of the horrid shoes. And then as Oliver and I were walking out of the hall, he stopped at the door and waited for me to go through. Nobody ever did that for me before. And I was struck with this awful thought, like a bolt of lightning: ‘He thinks I’m a girl.’ I couldn’t say a word to him after that. I couldn’t stop thinking it. I still can’t. What can it mean? Of course I’m a girl. I have to be one. 

And yet...and yet, I know in my heart I’m not. I’m not, and I can’t make myself be. There! I’ve written that down now. I shall have to hide this diary more carefully than ever, and leave instructions in my will to have it burned. When I think of living my whole life with everyone thinking I’m a woman I want to scream and scream. 

I got up just now and looked at myself in the mirror. I don’t look very girlish. I’ve got straight eyebrows and Papa’s nose and- thank heaven- hardly any bosom. The idea of having a bosom like Mother’s always filled me with dread and I hadn’t the least idea why. 

What am I, if not a girl? What hiatus is there between my bodily structure and my feelings? Perhaps I am neuter, like the bees.

AUTHOR’S NOTE:

A big fat L-O-L to the idea that I was ever going to get this done before actual May Day came and went.

In terms of Clem’s pronouns, I am going to continue to use she/her in the story until Clem has figured out how they prefer to be referred to. Outside of the story I currently think of them as they/them.

I drew on a couple of real historical sources for this story. Clem’s moment when Oliver holds the door open is based on this passage from Out of the Ordinary, the autobiography of Michael Dillon. Dillon was a trans man who transitioned in the late 1930s. The story he tells took place in around the 1920s, but I saw no reason why something similar couldn’t have happened to Clem in 1908.

The second source is an anonymous queer person who was interviewed by Havelock Ellis in the late 19th century. Ellis conducted numerous interviews with queer people and got them to write testimonials about their life experiences which were published anonymously. They are a fascinating look at how real queer people saw themselves.

The end of Clem’s diary entry references this quote from one of the testimonials:

‘I had never come across any theories on the subject, but I decided that I must belong to a third sex of some kind. I used to wonder if I was like the neuter bees! I knew physical and psychical sex feeling and yet I seemed to know it quite otherwise from other men and women. I asked myself if I could endure living a woman's life, bearing children and doing my duty by them. I asked myself what hiatus there could be between my bodily structure and my feelings, and also what was the meaning of the strong physical feelings which had me in their grip without choice of my own." Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Volume II, History XXXIX

“Essence of a Sim” Challenge by @trumpets0ng

EA has made some unfortunate design/fashion choices for their pre-made sims & townies. We’ve all made them over at some point or another, but often they come out looking very, very different from their original conception.

This challenge is to make over pre-made sims with only subtle changes & tweaks, so that they look like a better version of themselves instead of someone else entirely.

The only major rule, is to keep the “essence” of the sim’s being. This means their racial and/or ethnic features, and overall body type. (i.e. don’t make fat sims thin, curvy sims straight bodied, make androgynous sims masc/fem, straighten natural sims hair, westernize/anglicize sims of color, etc.) You can tweak these things and change spacing/proportions, but not erase them outright.

Feel free to change hair their lengths, styles, and fashion ‘til you hearts content! You can change skins, but only to a comparable color. (EA’s skins still suck after all!)

You don’t have to tag me, but I’d love to see what you come up with! This is just for fun, so tag friends if you want.

About us (We will edit from time to time to keep it fresh)

We are a system formed due to childhood trauma. We figure it out recently so we still don't know much, We're still getting to know each other. I don't knowhow many we are as I keep finding more and more.

We are autistic, professionally diagnosed. But we still don't have a professional diagnosis to DID or OSDD. We are working on it. But it has been recognized by our therapist.

We are from Brazil, English is not our first language so please forgive the mistakes.

We almost never have amnesia and we don't switch often. Our host is always on the front our co-councious. We probably have OSDD1b or partial TDI which is a new diagnosis and we meet all the criteria.

The body has 22. We are in college and we study psychology. We also are writers but only published a short-story in portuguese until now. Maybe one day it'll be translated, who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️

Now about the alters, we'll post a little here, make a post about each one and put the link here so you could know more. But it will probably take a while to finish. Anyway, here we go:

I'm the host of the system, always around. My pronouns are they/ them. 22 and I age with the body. I like the color blue, I like to play minecraft and the sims, I love medical shows and I'm the one who lives outside life more. Theo is my name but it's not the body's name. That one we chose not to say. I'm trans nonbinary and pansexual. As I'm on the front almost all the time, the body is transitioning.

I'm 20. My pronouns are she/her. I like to enjoy life so quarantine sucks! I f*cking miss the parties we never went, the fun we never had. My favorite color is red and black. Yes, my name is Devil but I'm human and I'm not evil.

Things that happened in my Ace Attorney Sims 4 game while my husband was out of town for a weekend:

Freelance artist and single dad Phoenix Wright moved into a hovel with his teen sister Maya and his young daughter Trucy

He made enough money selling forgeries to put himself through law school but he didn’t have to pay a cent because he got multiple scholarships so instead he put a second story on the house so the girls didn’t have to share a room anymore

Have I mentioned he’s such a good dad??? Like actually. My heart.

He is clumsy, cheerful, and neat. For stress relief he cleans the toilet and rides his bike. He is insanely charming and honestly he’s pretty much as OP as it is possible to get while being a lovable doofus?

Maya works weeknights at a burger joint in addition to going to high school. She is always tired, ALWAYS hungry, but her grades are improving. Soon college! I don’t know what to have her major in lmao you can’t be a spirit medium in this game. Maybe a magician??? Idek.

While getting his law degree (with honors!) Phoenix went on two spectacularly love-struck dates with Dahlia Hawthorne, with whom he had his first woohoo... and the next day she immediately broke up with him, turned into a vampire, and literally gave him a box full of dog poo (for which he was GRATEFUL!?!. I shit you not)

On Phoenix’s first date with Dahlia, the bartender was Klavier Gavin. I fell out my chair. I hadn’t even played his character yet.

Dahlia now lives in a castle with her evil vampire fiancée, their cat, and a random ad exec who pays the bills and lets them drink his blood sometimes

The Von Karmas and Miles Edgeworth are also in town. I murdered a sim and gave them her mansion lmao

Franziska is still in high school, where she befriended Apollo Justice and Kay Faraday and formed a debate league. She was briefly a lifeguard but the hours got too intense and she practically had a mental breakdown so she quit to do schoolwork

Von Karma is supposed to be evil but mostly he’s just too old and tired. Their butler disappeared??? Suspicious

Phoenix is getting fat because he doesn’t have time to work out anymore and all he eats are microwave dinners. I didn’t even know that could happen. He has extreme dad bod. On Christmas I tried to get him to change out of his sweatpants and into a holiday sweater and he literally would not

Miles just got into college (it was way too much work to do him and Phoenix at the same time because omg the college shit is So Involved lmao) and due to the Trauma of Dahlia living in his house and beating the shit out of him, he is now living in the Wright’s guest room on a Murphy bed with his Pomeranian

He and Phoenix are still “just friends” because Miles is flirtation repellant and I’m gonna throw Kristoph Gavin at Phoenix first but trust me, once they are both settled into their law careers they are getting EXTREMELY MARRIED

Miles regularly helps Trucy with her homework and is learning to cook so. That’s adorable

He also got a fucking GAMING scholarship because he’s a nerd and he has to play in tournaments to pay his tuition. On New Years he did homework for like 6 hours, drank an entire pot of coffee and won a gaming chair in his league game. He has yet to sleep a single complete night.

Not to be outdone, Phoenix regularly collapses from exhaustion. Sometimes because Dahlia drank his blood, but usually because he worked an 8 hour day then came home and did more work, laundry, cleaning, parenting... etc

Phoenix met Hannibal Lecter while taking Edgeworth’s dog to the vet. He offered him legal representation.

Yes of course I made a Hannibal sim. He’s currently a pastry chef and his house is GORGEOUS - he murdered a nice family and took their modern cliff-side masterpiece. After some redecorating, that shit is my dream house. Will and Abigail are also there, of course. And Winston.

Next I’m going to make Mia so Dahlia can Murder her. Time for more drama.

THE PERMANENT RAIN PRESS INTERVIEW WITH MADELEINE SIMS-FEWER AND DUSTY MANCINELLI

Violation is one of the most stirring films we’ve seen over the past year. Since making its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival last year, the Canadian flick has been busy on the film festival circuit; now available through digital-cinema on TIFF Bell Lightbox, with Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) Connect to follow beginning March 26th. 

What inspired the story behind Violation?

We were both dealing with our own personal experiences of trauma at the time, and wanted to make an anti-revenge film that deals with female rage, and emotional and psychological unravelling that trauma gives rise to.

We really wanted to make a revenge film that pushed the boundaries of the genre, challenging the tropes of the scantily clad woman becoming empowered by violent revenge against a menacing stranger, and that revenge is the cathartic climax we are all seeking at the end of the movie. Yes, it is a film about seeking retribution, but also about the cost of that retribution. It is a film about violation, but also about lack of empathy and selfishness, and how both can erode your morality and the relationships around you.

It’s been described as “twisted,” “feminist-minded,” and a “hypnotic horror.” At its core, how would you describe the film’s genre(s)?

Those three descriptors fit perfectly, actually! We weren’t thinking too much about genre when we wrote the script, mostly about the story and about how we portrayed Miriam’s journey. We were inspired by films that don’t sit comfortably in a genre box, like Caché, Fat Girl, Don’t Look Now. Films that are dramas with elements of horror.

When you were writing the script, can you elaborate on the dynamics between the two couples that you wanted to portray – Miriam and Caleb, and Greta and Dylan?

Miriam and Caleb are very much at an impasse in their relationship. The spark has gone out and they don’t know how to reignite it. Instead of doing the work it might take to get through a rough patch Miriam is very much running away. There is a real transience to modern relationships that we wanted to capture in their dynamic - this idea that when the romance is gone the relationship has run its course. Miriam wants to fix it, but doesn’t know how - she clumsily tries to fix it with sex (on her sister’s advice), and this echoes how she tries to fix her trauma too.

Greta and Dylan have a seemingly healthy relationship. But when you look a little deeper their outward affection and codependence masks a deep distrust. Dylan is having his ‘grass is greener’ moment, and he’s totally selfish to the impact this has on those around him. Greta can sense this, but she’s too enamoured by him to risk rocking the boat. It’s all a recipe for tragedy really.

Miriam and Greta have a complex relationship, to say the least. It’s natural to have distance between siblings as they grow older, did you always intend to have a sibling relationship be a centre of your story?

Yes, we always wanted to make a film about a person who suffers sexual assault and is not believed by their sibling. That was one of the first parts of the story that came together. There is so much to unpack in a sibling relationship like theirs. A rich history of mutual failures and resentments as well as so much camaraderie and love. The more painful betrayal in the story comes from Greta, not Dylan.

We wanted to explore the idea of trauma within families, and how abuse and violence affects everyone in the family, not just the person who suffers it. Everything else orbits around these two sisters — Miriam and Greta — as Violation mines the little resentments, commonalities, shared joys and sorrows that weave together a truthful portrait of these women.

A lot of the horror and dread in Violation comes from the way the sisters interact, and in the ways they react to each other from a place of fear. There is no filter in these close sibling relationships (we know this as we both come from big families!) which can be wonderful, but can also lead you to hurt and be hurt in ways that leave permanent emotional scars.

The non-linear editing engages viewers into the story, as do the jarring intercuts with imagery of nature, animals and insects. Tell us about the editing and post-production phase, and what you hoped to accomplish with the progression and symbolism.

The way we have edited Violation is very deliberate. We are forcing you to experience things you might not want to in a very specific way, guiding you through this post traumatic landscape where the past and present are constantly speaking to each other.

We chose to weave two timelines together — the 48 hours leading up to the betrayal and the 48 hours surrounding the act of revenge. This forces the audience to re-contextualize what they have seen, challenging their own opinions of the characters based on what information we choose to reveal and when.

Violation is told completely from Miriam’s perspective — we watch her emotional and psychological unravelling as she struggles desperately to do the right thing. There is a sequence in the middle of the film where we see this act of revenge. There is no dialogue for a long time, we just follow Miriam as she goes through these meticulous actions. And what we realize is that her plan, though well thought-out, is unbelievably emotionally and physically taxing. She’s not prepared, and we watch the real horror of her actions play out through her visceral emotional responses. It was important for us to really force the audience to experience things as Miriam does. The editing is focused and relentless; never letting you stray from her experiences and emotions.

Madeleine, for you, getting to play Miriam and connect with her pain and turbulent emotions through the course of the film, can you share your thoughts on that experience. How did committing to this character challenge you as an actor?

It was the most challenging role I have ever played, and in many ways was absolutely terrifying. I wanted to push myself as far as I could go as an actor and challenge myself to really find the truth of who this woman is, and reveal that to the audience. There are so many quiet moments where Miriam’s journey is so internal, so the challenge there was in truly living each moment as if I was her — getting lost in the role — so that I was not indicating what she was feeling, but living it.

What was it like having Anna, Jesse and Obi as screen partners?

Very liberating. They are all extremely dedicated, layered, engaging performers. They elevated me and challenged me every step of the way. Jesse and I have worked together before, and we have an ease that makes scenes with him very fun. The comfort level we share allows us to really experiment. It was my first time working with Anna and Obi, but it won’t be the last. They are both so open and sensitive that I felt our work was incredibly nuanced.

An overarching question is whether revenge is ever justified. Tell me about Miriam’s mindset, and the struggle between morals, motives and her actions. For you as individuals, is this something that you have had conflict with in your own lives?

In a way we wanted to make a sort of revenge fairy-tale. Fairy tales provide ways for children to think through moral problems, and to wrestle with life’s complexities. They aren’t depictions of reality, but reflect ideas about morality and humanity. We wanted the audience to think about consent, the rippling effects of trauma, how we judge women vs how we judge men, and perhaps consider those things more deeply.

In the end Miriam’s desire to punish those who have wronged her hopefully leaves the audience with a compelling ambiguity to be unpacked as they scrutinize her actions.

Tell us about the trust built between the cast and crew on-set, especially during the more intimate and grim scenes and tense conversations. How do you build that comfort level?

It’s really just about having open, honest conversations. We spent a lot of time with the actors during prep and rehearsals just talking, and building friendships. We are dedicated to creating a comfort level where actors can be completely transparent and open with us, so that when we ask them to go somewhere they know we are there guiding the process and aren’t afraid to take big risks.

To survivors of trauma, what do you hope this movie provides in its story?

We hope to provide a new take on the revenge genre - one that explores rape from a different angle and context - with the focus of the narrative much more on the psychological ramifications of trauma. We aren’t looking to tell anyone what to take away from the film, and we made Violation as much for people with no experience with trauma as for people who understand these murky waters. Really we hope the film sparks thought, discussion, and empathy.

You met at the 2015 TIFF Talent Lab; what drew you together as a filmmaking team? What advice do you have for artists/filmmakers looking for their own collaborators?

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what drew us together - it’s sort of an intangible thing. We developed a very candid friendship that we thought might translate well to a working relationship. Luckily it did!

Shortly after the Talent Lab we decided to work together on two short films, Slap Happy and Woman in Stall. Until directing these shorts neither of us had really had ‘fun ’making a film. Filmmaking was a drive, but it wasn’t a joy. These shorts gave us a totally new perspective, where we actually had a good time workshopping the script, creating a visual style, and just challenging each other. By the time we were making our third short, Chubby, we had decided to officially form a creative partnership.

We definitely approach filmmaking from different perspectives and with complementary strengths, but we don’t say ‘this is your thing and this is mine.’ We work collaboratively on every part of the process, and we built this unique way of working through our shorts, so that when we got the funding to make Violation (through Telefilm’s Talent to Watch program) we already had a solid method that works for us.

In terms of advice it really helps to know how you like to work before looking for a collaborator. Then it’s just about experimenting. It is very much trial and error. Don’t try to force a collaboration that isn’t working for you. There is no shame in a creative relationship not working out. But also it is important to be flexible and open to compromise - that’s how ideas flourish and grow. If you are too rigid then maybe collaboration is not right for you.

Going from short films to your debut feature with Violation, what new challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The endurance required to make a feature was something we weren’t prepared for. At about day 3 we turned to each other, totally exhausted, and were like: “there’s 30 more days of this.” It was brutally draining. Honestly every day brought its own unique challenges and problems to overcome, but we had such a strong, supportive team that it made each mountain a little easier to climb.

Aside from yourselves, who are some other up and coming Canadian filmmakers viewers should keep their eyes on?

Grace Glowicki and Ben Petrie are both doing really interesting work. Grace’s film Tito is a disturbingly good character study that builds a terrifying sense of dread. Ben’s short Her Friend Adam is one of our favourites, and he’s about to make his first feature.

Is there anything further you’d like to add or share, perhaps what you are currently working on?

Right now we are writing a slow burning mystery thriller and a twisted dark comedy. That’s about all we can reveal at the moment!
