How old is everyone in the birdhouse?

I usually dodge these questions because I have a terrible memory for numbers, but your tags literally made me roll around grinning today so I'll do it. If I contradict these later just pretend it was on purpose.

In the present day, it's been something like 2-3 years since Franco disappeared. That makes him 23-24. The trip to the USA where he caught WRU's eye was his graduation present. Avis is around 45.

Florence's age is unknown. They signed up later than 18, but as a refurb, they're missing even more of their years. They've been at the shelter for the longest and were barely with their Sir for a month, but nobody knows how long they were a pet before their refurb. Arimura specified that they had to be 22 at the oldest, which would make them no more then 24, but who can say if Refurbox held up their end of the deal?

Tenten is considered the oldest rescue and was with his family for around six years. I think he's about 24 - he signed up very shortly after coming of age. This also makes Tenten the person who was in captivity the longest and thus the longest 'living memory' of the rescues, and he would have continued in his role for the rest of his life if not for his ever-increasing need to be free.

Boo's age is also unclear. Though they were also repurposed by a second owner, they remember their life before Tara turned them into a pet-hunter. They are at least three years past their sign-up, but they were one of the older 'volunteers' at Euroboxies. They have the second-longest 'living memory'. Avis thinks of them accurately as the middle sibling, 22-23.

Kamala is one of the younger ones, for sure. Her time with Mrs Darren was cut short but she was delivered to Avis fairly soon after and it's been nearly two years… She's not even 21, I don't think. Kamala has always had issues with self-worth and I suspect she was a genuine volunteer for WRU, but I'm not as sure of her as the others.

Then there's Roman. I don't think Roman lasted more than 6-9 months in the office, and I don't think the company lasted much longer. (Buying a box boy and then losing him, plus a police investigation, plus their decision not to fill Tyler's role, and they folded fast.) He's the baby of the shelter in both ways. He wasn't as young as Tenten when he totally-noncoercedly signed up, but he's still probably barely 20.

The oldest person in the cast, barring Arimura (who can blame Florence for running tbh) is Sunita Kaur, a happily married mother of three, who Avis seriously looks up to and couldn't get by without.

Unexpected Baggage

Erik should have realized Schmidt would do it again. How had he been naive enough to think that he would be the last child tortured by that man?

He had given up the last lead he had on Schmidt to save the girl he had seen being dragged around by the mad man's followers. He was trying very hard to not regret it. Reminding himself that the girl was like him.

Here were the facts: he was in France under false pretenses, his reason for living wasn't dead yet, and there was an American teenager following him who wouldn't stop talking.

"-and all I wanted to do was get Monica back!" The girl threw her hands up, "My family is probably having my funeral already."

Maybe he shouldn't have started tuning her out. That sounded like important context.

He turned around to look at her, feeling slightly bad as he watched her pull down the sleeve of her jacket from where it was riding up. She kept doing that. He didn't want to ask why.

"Listen, kid-"

"Kamala."

"-which part of America are you from? I'll try to get you home, so you can tell them to call off the funeral, in-person."

She screwed up her nose as she thought out loud, "It's the sixties, right? Well that means my Nani is in Pakistan, right now. Probably just about to meet my Nana, so my parents are definitely not alive yet, and to answer your question-" She paused to breathe, "I don't think I qualify as an American right now."

The first thing that came to mind was that she sounded incredibly American for someone who claimed not to be. Was that what a Pakistani accent sounded like?

The second thought, once he actually digested what she said, slipped out before he could control himself:

"What the hell?"

"Surprise!" She did jazz hands weakly, "I'm a bit of a time traveler. And, I'm hoping, a dimension traveler."

If she was right about that, Erik was incredibly glad he'd gotten her out of Shaw's hands.

I spotted common things that both Miles Morales and Sam Alexander had.

1) Their mothers (Eva and Rio) would scold them in Spanish if they both did something wrong. Ofc, Eva and Rio were Bilingual.

2) Both of them failed to rizz girls. For example, in ITSV, Miles' rizz caused Gwen to shave her side hair while in Avengers all new all different comic, Sam's rizz made Kamala reject him.

3) The became best friends with girl whom they failed to rizz. The way they hold each other's hand look the same! I'm surprised Gwiles and Samala were the MOST underrated ships in Marvel.

4)Ofc, they both were grounded before. There'll be a girl sneaking into the room, causing them to sneak out. I guess Rio and Eva gonna be mad at them and extend the grounded period up (like more than 2 months lol). Plus, whenever the girl touches their things without their permission, they would be upset.

5) In ATSV, Spot hinted that he might kill his dad, Jeff. Both Sam and Miles suffered the pain of losing someone in their family. Sam lose his dad, Jesse who was imprisoned in the space(I forgot who's the character said about his dad being dead). Luckily, Sam managed to rescue Jesse from space. I felt like Miles might be like Sam who can save his father since in parallel universe Jeff alr died. I hope my boy, Miles can at least save Jeff in BTSV.

Anyways, these are my opinions about Miles and Sam. I love them as my favourite male characters in Marvel. I know there are some ppl who would hate them for being a replacement for Peter and Richard. They deserve a lot of recognition or at least a solo show in the future. Btw, I can't wait to see them appearing in MCU.

When you introduced your dragon to Gendry, he was shaking like a leaf - despite it being a warm day. You knew he was trying to hide his fear. When you climbed ontop of Viserion, you called out, "YOU COMING OR WHAT??" and Gendry couldn't breathe. (It took himm five interactions with Viserion for him to get on as well). And yes, Viserion is completely fine with Gendry. He likes him a lot. Sees him as him for what he is.

Definitely a mix! I think you have a lot of personality traits from Dany, Sansa, Arya (arya a lot actually), even Missendei. You have a polite demeanour and don't like bothering others (you aren't. I think like that too because of how I was raised, but we're humans that deserve to take up space!).

You actually really remind me of grown up Rhaenyra Targaryen (I know we're in got era) but they wanted to cast a 'rockstar' feeling person for that role, and I think you're really like Rhaenyra. But with a bit more hesitancy towards arguments.

Dany was curious whenever you interacted with her dragons. Drogon would give a curious growl, until he smelt you. Understanding you were like Dany. You felt like you could look into his eyes, and he let you. Mutual respect was there.

Rhaegal was less aggressive and blew smoke at you. Instantly you knew this was going to be a banter like relationship.

And then there was Viserion.

Instantly when you looked at him you fell to your knees. Staring at the beautiful gold and white dragon. There was a pull inside you. Something had hooked your very soul and you knew the other hook was in the youngest dragon.

Viserion whined as he looked at you, his strong body getting up and moving toward you. But you couldn't move, you had been hoping this would happen, and it was!

i'm assuming you're talking about the comics but on the off chance you're asking about the spiderverse movies-- for miles, margo. for gwen, hobie. miles needs unconditional support from a girl who understands his situation, and gwen needs unconditional freedom from a guy who wants her to have it even if it means they won't be together.

a superpowered girlfriend who can accompany him on adventures. miles is a social superhero who thrives on team-ups (especially on teams that contain lots of women, like the champions or the order of the web), and he wants a girlfriend who can be a part of that. that's the one thing about siat i'll give bendis credit for: that was the moment miles figured out he wanted a superpowered girlfriend. he just didn't realize gwen wasn't that girl.

-> (it also differentiates him from peter, who seems to do best with love interests who are away from the fight, and who he tends to rescue from damsel-in-distress situations. which follows: miles hasn't gone through a Dead Girlfriend Trauma that would make him nervous about putting a loved one near danger, and he's more egalitarian than peter.)

a girlfriend who's his equal. we need to retire the nerd bro fantasy of getting a hot special girl who trails after you like a puppy (staring at you, spiderverse gwiles). miles needs a partner who he can be honest with, who he respects, who can call him on his shit as often as she supports him, and who has a life of her own that she values just as much as him, with interesting things happening to her when he isn't in the room.

... but she can't be more interesting when he isn't around. you have a tightrope to walk here. the issue with katie and barbara is they feel like they don't have much going on when miles isn't in the room. you don't miss them much when they're gone. it's the reverse with kamala and gwen; you keep wishing miles would fuck off so they can be interesting again-- yes, they'd be great partners with him in a fight, but being miles's love interest holds them back from their own stories, and if he weren't around nothing about their positive character development would be lost.

a black girlfriend. miles's story hinges on him growing into a hero who represents and empowers his community. it makes sense that in his diet peter parker / placate-the-white-audience phase, he'd have his head turned by katie bishop, lana baumgarten and gwen stacy. but as miles comes into his own, and starts centering people of color-- specifically black people-- he's gotten more poc love interests (kamala, barbara). it needs to stay that way. the best way for his romantic arc to reflect his overall arc is if he ends up with a black girl.

( -> not to mention how few black couples there are in comics-- and how there are basically no a-list black couples in big two comics-- and how the few black male superheroes around tend to end up with white women. this is a representation issue bigger than miles, and it's one his character is perfect to help solve. so let's do it.)

tiana toomes is the one. no contest. he's had a few love interests over the years, but tiana stands out as the best option by far.

she's a brand-new character. she's related to a member of peter's supporting cast, but she was created recently and he has no history with her nor any version of her. any relationship she has with miles is original and all theirs, with no spider-meta hanging over their heads.

she's a superhero. she has a great design that's gorgeous without being sexualized and very female-friendly. her powerset is a lot of fun to watch and a great compliment to miles when they're working together while also being distinct from him. even when tiana needs to be rescued by miles, she's never helpless. she saves him as often as he saves her.

she holds her own. tiana backs him up in a fight and supports him when he's vulnerable without compromising her own sense of self-worth. she's willing to call him out when he's not treating her well or his judgment is questionable.

she has a compelling backstory about being the vulture's granddaughter; she fits into the spider-man corner of the universe well, and enhances the vulture as a character by revealing a new side to him. plus she and miles share the experience of trying to redefine the legacy of a famous (white) spider-man character into something uniquely theirs. tiana could have her own miniseries, or show up in another title and fit right in. (but she's not so independent that she could lead her own ongoing better than being a supporting role). and without miles in her life, she wouldn't have changed from a more violent vigilante into a kinder hero.

she's black. she even shares miles's experience of coming from a multicultural/biracial background (tiana has a white father and her only living family is her white grandpa).

tiana's it. she's the perfect match to miles, they already have a relationship, and she's developed enough as her own character to be ready for adaptation elsewhere. put her in live action. put her in the games. put her in animation. put her everywhere.

for gwen

.... honestly, this is much more difficult to pin down. so just walk with me here.

first, gwen's love interest gallery is super underdeveloped. it's a couple of teases, a few characters she's had a vibe with, and a whole lot of false starts... and only two guys she's gone on dates with, only one of whom she's shown true interest in. mostly, she's been the subject of unwanted attraction from people who want to possess her or otherwise don't have much respect for her. yes, miles is one of those people. his ‘relationship’ with gwen is easily one of the worst things that’s ever happened to her character.

given the queercoding surrounding her character, you could make a compelling case for her being asexual... but. so many people want to ship her with male and female characters that i can't see marvel ever actually going there. and honestly, i think gwiles is her most popular ship because there are so few other canon alternatives. part of freeing her from that mess is giving her some.

so gwen isn't ready for a One True Love yet. she needs to date around first. i have plenty of ideas about that.

but when she is, what does she need?

gwen needs someone new. not peter or miles. not one of their love interests. like miles, she’s her own person who deserves to end up with an original love interest, not whoever gwen-616 was dating, or the default spider-man romance, mj. (… yes, i’m saying she shouldn’t end up with em jay)

gwen needs to go home. she only works as a character in earth-65. she needs a love interest who's either from earth-65, who can ground her to her world, or who'll never prevent her from going back to earth-65. so no one from earth 616, ever.

gwen needs someone who can protect themselves. gwen isn't really a social hero, so it doesn't matter to her if her love interest accompanies her on superhero business. what does matter is her public identity, which has put her loved ones in danger, and causes her a lot of guilt. she needs to know whoever she's with can handle any threats that might come their way from being associated with her. which means they need to have powers of their own or be able to fucking beat ass. and they need to be comfortable with the risk.

gwen needs support and space. gwen needs someone who empathizes with her problems as a superhero, who can help her through her trauma and be a source of understanding and comfort. beyond that, she might not be opposed to romance, but she isn't motivated by it. commitment freaks her out and she's a solitary hero. she doesn't need someone constantly at her side; she needs someone who'll let her leave and come back on her own terms without feeling neglected.

gwen needs someone who can help her keep her independence. someone who respects her, listens to what she needs, takes her boundaries seriously and won't begrudge her if she decides to stop the relationship. and more broadly, someone who can help her fight the systems that are trying to take it away from her.

gwen needs to end up with a person of color. gwen's character was at her best when she was deconstructing white feminism and surrounded by a poc cast. that's been forgotten recently, as her newer writers keep shoving her back into girlboss stories and interacting with mostly white characters. giving her a nonwhite love interest would help get her back to that point, and ensure that her growth will stick. siat was awful, but it did stumble across one important thing about gwen: she should end up with a person of color. but that person just isn't miles.

gwen needs something queer. i don't necessarily mean Only Another Woman, though yes, she should have a female love interest at some point. gwen needs a relationship that isn't caught up in the traditional trappings of romance. she doesn't like commitment, exclusivity, labels or a married-with-kids ending. she needs to be with someone who either is queer or is cool with a relationship that isn't heteronormative. straight men need not apply.

ideally, it's hobie. again. it's been a vibe in the comics for years but the spiderverse movies tripled down on all the things about their dynamic that matter and said "yes, the vibe is romantic" out loud. he's the guy.

hobie’s something new. he isn’t peter or miles or one of their love interests. gwen-616 never dated him either. and he never dated his gwen. the dynamic he has with gwen-65 is unique to them. (and get this: hobie’s adoration of gwen comes from his appreciation of her punk music. the physical attraction is there, but what drew him to her is her artistry and her opinions.)

he may not be from her world, but he'll never make her stay in his. editorially, he's a less popular character than her, which means the writers would have no reason to do that. and in-universe, it would be so ooc for him to do it that it just wouldn't happen.

he's another superhero. he has powers of his own, he's great in a fight and is used to being in them (he's even willing to kill). he also has a public identity on his world. not only can he handle himself, he understands exactly how she feels.

he understands her problems. he's also a spider-person, also in and out of being a fugitive, also having trouble with being a public figure after defeating his nemesis, also constantly bouncing into the spiderverse, also dealing with a lot of heavy shit he hasn't worked through at all--both hobie and gwen are doomed by the narrative to die young and have futures ahead of them that'll turn them into something they hate.

he's a counterculture character. he's spider-punk. like gwen, he has an antagonistic relationship with the police and power structures of his world and his narrative is about standing up to them and tearing down the systems they reinforce. it only follows that he'd be down to help gwen with hers-- and to call her out when she's in a girlboss relapse and challenge her to stick to her principles. he'd also rather let go of the relationship than force her to stay with him if she's not into it or if it won't be good for her-- both times hobie's crush on her bubbled up, he backed off and quickly readjusted to treating her like a teammate without holding it against her.

he's black. being close to hobie means gwen would be more likely to gravitate back towards her poc cast (glory, betty, hobie-65, randy, reed, the sams, felicia, cindy, kitty; where the hell did those dynamics go?), and be written into the political stories that bring out the best of her character. and he would not stand for her white feminism problem... therefore if they're together, that means she beat it for good or it'll never be able to take root in her more than temporarily because his influence will drive her to reject it.

he's also queer as hell. like gwen, hobie surrounds himself with a big queercoded friend group who he's in a rock band with. like gwen, he doesn't exactly seek out relationships but he isn't necessarily closed off to them. like gwen, if he ends up married with kids with anyone, something's gone fucking wrong. like gwen, he has a vibe with a canonically queer best friend who's in a gay relationship with someone else in the friend group. he's even noticed that gwen's into women and is encouraging about it. and like gwen, we're all just waiting for him to be confirmed as queer. this relationship, should it ever exist, would be far from heteronormative.

hobie is the best option overall. editorially and in-universe, their similarities make them so fucking compatible. if they got together, they'd be great for each other.

(in terms of canon, harry is the best option on earth-65 as of now, but em jay is the most necessary one. both don't meet all the criteria, but could be written into most of them-- but hobie checks all the boxes inherently: you don’t have to write him into this person, and it would be difficult to write him away from it.)

(also, very interesting that he's in the opposite situation that tiana's in-- tiana's a confirmed canon love interest, but only in one continuity. hobie's made it to multiple continuities, but isn't confirmed as a serious love interest in any of them.)

but that's the thing. it's an if. apart from them having a romantic ~vibe~ in the comics and a romantic subtext in the spiderverse movies, they're not a canon couple anywhere.

and there's a lot more that needs to be done with them (with gwen in particular) before them getting together would work.

specifically, hobie needs to be confirmed as queer. gwen needs to escape gwiles, to go home to earth-65, and to come out as queer.

harry and hobie are her best options (canon and overall), but the writers and audience wouldn't hesitate to break them up to slide miles in there (on the spiderverse side of the fandom, they already did that shit to ghostpunk in atsv). the same will be true if gwen is ace-- nobody will take it seriously, and they'll just insist that miles can Fix Her. the priority right now is getting gwen out of the gwiles danger zone as quickly and permanently as possible. the way to do it is to give her a girlfriend.

finally giving gwen a female love interest after ten years of queercoding and buildup? taking the comphet subtext of sitting in a tree and making it explicit that gwen can only be with miles if she's closeting herself, and miles would be the kind of guy who makes a girl repress her sexuality so he can date her? that makes gwiles radioactive. you can't revisit the ship without assassinating his** character and inciting a backlash.

(** bffr the fans and gen audience don't care if gwen's character's assassinated to make gwiles happen. it happened in siat and the spiderverse writers and miles's readers thought it was her real personality. it happened in the spiderverse movies and people ate that shit up and act like that's the Best Gwen Yet. but if miles is written ooc into a total asshole, people are gonna get pissed)

and to be clear, right now em jay is the gwiles slayer. she's not the best romantic option for gwen, but she has a decade of tension with gwen that just got canonized, she's the second-most-popular ship with gwen, and she's got the name recognition among casuals that'll get people to pay attention-- people have been wanting some version of gwen and mary jane to make out for decades (even though a lot of those people are dudes who just want to jack off to ~two girls kissing~, fuck it, if it gets us there, it gets us there). and em jay's on earth-65, where gwen needs to stay. she's the one with the best shot at killing that ship and getting gwen home.

but since e65's getting jettisoned For Good or at least for the forseeable future... it's gonna have to be another girl. while gwen's in 616, she needs a girlfriend. any girl. doesn't matter. as long as she's a girl, and gwen kisses her, and they’re together for multiple issues, we did it, she's canonically queer. and if miles acknowledges that gwen is queer and is supportive of it, that could shut the door on the ship. if gwen and miles can't be on separate worlds, at least they can be unavailable, uninterested and incompatible.

anyway! give gwen literally any girlfriend to get her over the coming-out hump and kill gwiles. then give her closure with harry and em jay, or let her explore some earth-65 based love interests to get her home. then someday, in an ideal world that probably exists only in my dreams, it should be hobie.

COMEBACK OF THE YEAR RANDY SAVAGE: 20,036 votes

This wasn’t supposed to be an eventful year for Randy Savage. The “Macho Man” was going to devote himself to his broadcasting duties and compete in the ring only occasionally, right? 

Wrong!

It didn’t happen, and that’s why Savage has won Comeback of the Year.

Savage stunned the wrestling world when he left WWF for WCW but not as a wrestler/broadcaster, but as a wrestler, period. The rumors immediately began: Was he back to form an alliance with his old WWF friend Hulk Hogan, or was he going to begin a vicious feud with his old WWF enemy Hulk Hogan?

At first, it was neither. His primary focus was on defeating another old hated foe, Ric Flair. Although Savage suffered his first WCW loss to the “Nature Boy,” at The Great American Bash, he beat Flair in most of their matches around the circuit and beat him decisively at Bash at the Beach. In the process of those matches, and several against Big Van Vader, Savage proved that ring rust had not at all eaten away at his legendary skills.

“Randy’s probably in better shape now than he’s ever been,” said Sting. “I’ve really been impressed. What impresses me most though, is his enthusiasm. After all these years, he still gets excited about matches.”

In tag team matches, Savage looked just as sharp, teaming with Sting and Hogan for several memorable encounters. Both Savage and Hogan have admitted there was some tension between them on those occasions, but most observers believe it is a tension that worked to the team’s advantage.

“They both were trying to prove to each other who the stronger part of the team was,” said Broadcaster Gene Okerlund. “That made the team more dangerous.”

For Savage, though, no comeback will be complete without a World title, which means friends won’t necessarily be friends for long. He might have to go through the “Hulkster” to get that WCW World belt.

“Savage came so far this year, so you can’t expect him to play second banana to Hogan,” wrote Perry Christopher of Dayton, Ohio. “I’m sure he has a lot of respect for Hulk, but he won’t let anybody keep him away from the World title.”

There’s no more coming back for Savage. He is back. Unless of course we create a new award: Comeback Broadcaster of the Year.

First runner-up: For most of the year, the Bodies were completely overlooked in the WWF. Then they decided to go back to their roots. Within three days, they won both the Smoky Mountain and USWA tag team titles. Tom Prichard and Jimmy Del Ray gave notice to all those who were beginning to believe they didn’t belong in the big-time anymore.

Second runner-up: At In Your House I, Vega rescued his old friend Razor Ramon from an attack by Jeff Jarrett and The Roadie. That brought acclaim to a wrestler who, until early-1995, hadn’t done much for a long time. In June, he advanced all the way to the finals of the King of the RIng. In Puerto Rico, he used to be TNT. In the WWF, he has star potential. 

THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR: 5,784 votes

Third runner-up: One of the most popular wrestlers of the early-1990s, Warrior hadn’t competed for two years when he defeated The Honky Tonk Man in Las Vegas back in July. Since then, he has wrestled a series of matches in Europe for the Catch Wrestling Association. It’d be no surprise to anyone if he capped his comeback with a move to a major federation.

Washington CNN  — Vice President Kamala Harris made history Tuesday by casting her 32nd tie-breaking vote, setting a new record for number of votes cast by a vice president.

“Today is historic. Vice President Harris has just cast her 32nd tie-breaking vote, the most tie-breakers ever. I join all of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle thanking the Vice President for her leadership, and for making the work of the Senate possible,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

“Without her tie-breaking votes there would be no American Rescue Plan, no Inflation Reduction Act, and we would not have confirmed many of the excellent judges now presiding on the bench. Every time duty is called, Vice President Harris has answered, more than any other Vice President in our nation’s long and stories history,” he added.

The vote on Tuesday was to break the tie on a judicial nomination.

Harris had, before coming into office, expressed optimism that her tie-breaking authority wouldn’t be used.

“Since our nation’s founding, only 268 tie-breaking votes have been cast by a Vice President. I intend to work tirelessly as your Vice President, including, if necessary, fulfilling this Constitutional duty,” she wrote before taking office. “At the same time, it is my hope that rather than come to the point of a tie, the Senate will instead find common ground and do the work of the American people.”

Schumer had a brief ceremony in the Senate Reception Room to present Harris with the “Golden Gavel.”

According to the Senate Historical office, the “Golden Gavel” has been bestowed for a variety of reasons – Majority Leader Mike Mansfield presented a gavel to senators for presiding over the chamber for more than 100 hours during any session, and Majority Leader Trent Lott presented one to Chief Justice William Rehnquist following the end of the Clinton impeachment trial in 1999.

Chief Justice John Robert also received a Golden Gavel following the conclusion of the Trump impeachment trial in 2020.

Whumptober 18 - tortured for information.

Avis ordered her clothes, toiletries and treats. Tenten cooked her meals. Paris, now called Florence, sat next to her and snuck glances from the corner of their eye. Kamala went where Florence went, for the most part, but at other times paid her devotion to the cartoons and comics she adored. Roman hid from her. And then there was Boo.

What a ludicrous name. They were clearly living some kind of delusional fantasy, to be acting like one of the real rescues here, accepting a cutesy nickname and allowing the others to treat them like an equal. It was shamefully obvious what had happened to Mistress Tara’s first hunter. They had been tempted by freedom.

‘Jane’ was the living proof that Mistress Tara’s hunters could never be free. She wasn’t as experienced as ‘Boo’, but she could do enough to find them, and find simultaneously their target. Now she was here, as they were, to be taken on as a rescue. But she would not swallow their lies.

At the end of her first day, Avis showed her to a small room, equipped with the barest minimum furniture, and apologised. “It’s a guest room,” she explained inanely. “The bathroom is right across the hall. My room is at the other side, there’s a sign on the door with a bird on it. Come and knock if you need anything at all.”

Jane nodded. The room was warm and had carpet, so it was already a far cry from what she was used to.

Avis withdrew. Jane closed the door, sat down underneath the window with the curtain drawn back, and waited.

Boo didn’t sleep.

It was impossible. The nightmare had come true. There was, in this house right now, someone who meant to do them all harm. Florence being returned to their Sir was bad enough, but losing them would destroy Kamala. She needed to devote herself to someone, and after the presumed death of her old owner, losing Florence would reopen that emotional wound. Tenten and Roman, with their trained invective to be perfect, would naturally assume guilt for something they had nothing to do with. And Avis… Avis was doing this all because she had lost her son. If she lost someone else…

There was nothing for it. Boo stayed awake and listened. They listened to the footsteps settle into silence as each of them went to their own rooms. They listened to the light switch turn off in Florence’s room next to theirs. They listened to the pines creak and settle. They listened to the faint shift of wind across the roof. They listened, waiting, for a door to open.

They listened without moving. They could do this for hours, and they did. It was the dead of night when the traitor made her move.

They heard the door open. The footsteps were almost silent, but she didn’t know where the floorboards were solid and where they creaked. Even as she did her best to creep along the landing, she set her foot on the board between the third and fourth railings around the stairs, which let out a short groan.

Boo listened, tense for the sound of Florence’s door opening. Would she try to abduct them straight away? Would she threaten them? Try to win their trust? Think. What would a hunter do? What would Mistress Tara expect?

They darted back from the door a moment before the handle started turning. She was coming in here. She was coming in here and they hadn’t locked the door because they were complacent and used to being safe here and now she was in the doorway, closing the door behind her, locking the door behind her as they’d neglected to do and now they were face to face.

They stared at her. She stared back.

“Hunter,” she said.

“Hunter,” they returned. The word came out instinctively. The first time they had spoken since arriving here.

That was what Boo had to do, they realised. They had to act normal and tell their practised lies. If she realised that they had betrayed their Mistress, she would make them pay.

“Why are you here?” they asked, forcing their voice to emerge smoothly without the rasp of disuse. They couldn’t let her see how true their presented self had become.

“Mistress grows impatient,” she replied, still staring them down. “You have made no progress in three months.” “I have made progress,” they return. Their voice is level, not defensive. They are colleagues exchanging information. “I have earned the trust of the target and the others here. They view me as damaged and pitiful. Working here takes subtlety, because our work is illegal. The dynamics here are delicate.”

Could she tell, they wondered, that this was another act? Could she see the terror beneath their confidence? They breathed normally. They did not tense, blink, wince, or give any tell. Control yourself.

Her face was impassive. “The client demands action. We play this role because we can do the illegal and suffer no consequence. I will call for transport tomorrow. You will get the target out of this house.”

“Impossible,” they say flatly. “Have you not noticed the structure? Outings are dictated by Avis. Kamala and Paris will not be separated. Kamala acts as their caretaker and chaperone at all times.”

“She is weak and can be overpowered.”

Boo did not flinch. But the factual statement made them pause nonetheless. Mistress Tara’s methods had changed, from one hunter to the next. Had she trained Jane alongside them? Or afterwards, when she noticed their failure? What threats and promises had she instilled in her second pet?

“I was discouraged from harming other pets,” they tell her, to explain their surprise. She would no doubt have noticed.

“We do what is necessary,” she replied.

Boo considered her again. This was what they had been. This was how they had looked from the outside: dead-eyed and driven, seeing no way out but forward, imagining no other path, no other life. Avis had given them one without asking for permission, and Boo was glad, because they would have said no.

Could Jane be offered the same? They doubted it. She had been sent with a strict time limit. She had no time.

Even if she did, and she was sent on to another shelter, what then? Mistress Tara would not stand for it. She would sent more hunters. She might even come herself. Even Boo wasn’t sure that they could stand up to her in person. But still…

Avis – and Florence – would want there to be a way.

“We do,” they agreed. “When is the deadline?”

The knife appeared without warning and was against their neck a moment later, their back shoved into the closed door, hand around their arm, pushing it back from interfering. Boo froze, instincts drowned in the need to stay in control. Their pulse raced but the rest of them would not move.

Jane’s expression was unchanged as she pressed the stolen kitchen knife to their throat. She looked down at them without emotion. They looked back the same.

“You hesitated,” she told them. That was that. “Tell me what would make Paris leave the house.”

Boo exhaled. Their heartbeat was pounding all the way through them, down to their fingertips and toes. She was loyal as they had been. She was determined to succeed. She had no mercy, no sympathy, or none that she could ever act on. They felt their back sting with the slash of the whip. She was fresh and bold and implacable. They had more experience, but they had grown weak. Despite every workout, every sweep of the house, every night spent awake planning and plotting in case of danger – they had grown weak.

“Five,” she said. Mistress Tara did the same thing. Their strategies were learned from her. Their tactics were taught. Even their accents were the same as hers.

“Four,” she said.

“You are too rash, sister,” they tried, hoping to at least shock her with the offer of family.

She showed no reaction, but the knife jabbed down into their shoulder, breaking through cloth and skin, but only just.

Boo did not tense.

“Mistress Tara explained your weaknesses,” she warned them. The tip of the knife grazed the edge of their bullet wound scar. “What would cause Paris to leave the house?”

Control yourself! Their back burned. They could feel the blood welling up. “Paris leaves for their music lesson,” they answer. They do not stammer or tremble. “Every Tuesday. That is the best time. They travel with Avis, no Kamala.”

Tuesday was almost a whole week away. Jane did not consider it for a second. The knife pressed more deeply. “They leave tomorrow. What causes Kamala to separate from them?”

“Florence sleeps late,” they offer, knowing it is useless. “Nobody expects to see them before mid-morning.”

Whoever was collecting them wouldn’t have time to arrive. Jane still stared with her tranquil gaze as the knife pierced through the scar entirely and broke the tender muscle underneath.

The pain meant very little, but they would have trouble using that arm if she continued. Dr Davies would notice. Kamala would notice. Avis might. They would ask. The truth would have to come out. All of it.

“What tension is there between Paris and Kamala?”

Boo realised their mistake with a cold breath. Paris. They hadn’t said Paris.

“I see of none,” they lied again, as steadily as they can. “Kamala is a Platonic. She bends herself to their every whim, and they know no different.”

“You are useless.”

Their eyes slam closed as she removes the knife. Their expression could be carved from marble. They had been called useless countless times by Mistress Tara, and clearly… So had she.

“I will kill Kamala,” she told them, “or you can leave the house now. If you are missing in the morning, I will have my opening, and nobody will be harmed.”

Would they sacrifice Kamala for Florence? Yes. Florence was the one they owed. But Kamala would not be the only death. Even if Jane escaped with Florence alone, it would be the end of that bright, curious person that Boo had come to know. Florence would bleed out. Only Paris would be allowed to remain.

“I’ll leave,” they agreed. In the vain hope of bringing her back to their side, they added, “You would be suspected of the murder instantly. It would hinder your escape.”

She did not react. She reached past them and unlocked the door.

“You have sixty seconds,” she whispered.

They did not react. They turned away, and walked down the stairs, stepped into their shoes, and after a moment’s consideration, left through the glass patio door at the back of the house.

She remained upstairs, ready to kill Kamala if they faltered. Perhaps to kill Kamala anyway.

The night was bitingly cold. The blood trickling down their shoulder was the only warm thing about them. Their ears were ringing for no reason and their heart still beat like they were moving at a dead sprint.

The lane was dark. They walked down its centre, knowing there would be no cars. Hardly anyone lived this far out. The seclusion had been perfect for a shelter. Perfect for a murder spree, too.

The wind whispered between the leaves of trees. The road, barely more than flattened earth, was damp beneath their soles. Boo avoided leaving the Birdhouse, and had never walked down this long road. They didn’t know where it would lead them.

Kamala was probably already dead. The others would be next. Might as well kill them all.

But then, why let them escape? No, she was trying to do this without bloodshed. She simply knew they wanted that too. She had seen and bargained on their stupid attachment to those people.

Those pets. Pets like Boo, who would never escape what they were trained for.

Their feet came to a stop.

They weren’t trained as a hunter. Not originally. No, that had come later, with Mistress Tara. There had been an owner before Mistress Tara. A rich, powerful man, one with enemies, one deep in the volatile world of crime. A man who had needed a bodyguard to take his bullets, and that, Boo had done.

They were trained to protect.

Erik left the bar with three cooling bodies inside, hands tucked into his pocket as the door shut itself behind him.

Kamala was watching him carefully, positioned far away from the windows. He had asked her to wait outside, but he knew she had heard everything. Whether she could speak German or not, the gunshot and screams and blood splatters should be enough context for her to know what happened.

"I know..." He started off uncomfortably, "I know you have nowhere else to go. But that had to be done. The things they've done- you can't imagine."

"It happens, I guess." She replied dully, "Not, not really my place to say, is it? I just want Monica back."

Right. The woman named Monica Rambeau, who Kamala had come from the future to rescue.

"I have no idea how to do that." He admitted, "Searching the entire world is... An impossible task. But I'll try to figure out a way."

Kamala nodded, and briskly began walking away from the bar, "Let's get out of here. You get any information from the Nazis that I didn't hear?"

"He's in Miami." Erik replied, following after her.

"The... Herr Doktor guy or some other person connected to him?" Her question was disinterested, but he knew she was just pretending at it.

"It's Schmidt." He confirmed, and didn't add Finally, but the bitter excitement still poured through.

"He work for HYDRA?"

"Huh?"

Kamala nodded, readjusting her grip on her bag, "HYDRA, scientific weapons development division of Nazi Germany? They took over an American counter-terrorism wing after WW2. Huge scandal when the documents all got leaked. My friend Bruno and I learned cryptography to help decode them."

All this she delivered in quick expressionless monologue, and then tacking on, "Or, you know. Things could have gone differently in this dimension."

But too many details were lining up perfectly in his mind.

"Well." Erik decided, "Good thing America is our next stop."

[W]e need to reflect on the connection between the features of “incipient fascism”—in the U.S. case, the normalization of forms of racial terror and oppression—and the emergence of explicitly fascist movements and ideologies. We need to think about the links between the often extreme levels of classed and racialized violence that accompany actually-existing liberal democracies (think, for instance, of the anti-migrant militarization of the U.S. and E.U. borders) and the emergence of movements that espouse a host of extreme positions that invert this reality: these include the belief that the state and culture have been occupied by the “radical” left (by “Cultural Marxism,” by critical race theory), that racism is now meted out against formerly dominant ethnic majorities, and that deracinated elites have conspired with the wretched of the earth to destroy properly “national” populations that can only be rescued by a revanchist politics of security and protectionism.

Our “late” fascism is an ideology of crisis and decline. It depends, in the words of abolitionist scholar Ruth Wilson Gilmore, on enlisting supporters on the basis of “the idea and enactment of winning, of explicit domination set against the local reality of decreasing family wealth, fear of unemployment, threat of homelessness, and increased likelihood of early, painful death from capitalism’s many toxicities.” Its psychological wages and racial dividends do considerable political economic work, perpetuating a brutally unequal regime of accumulation by enlisting bodies and psyches into endless culture wars.

But what is this late fascism trying to prevent? Here is where the superstructure sometimes seems to overwhelm the base, as though forces and fantasies once functional to the reproduction of a dominant class and racial order have now attained a kind of autonomy. No imminent threat to the reproduction of capitalism is on the horizon (at least no external one), so that contemporary fascist trends manifest the strange spectacle of what, in a variation on Davis and Marcuse, we could call a preventive counterreform. This politics is parasitic, among other things, on resuscitating the racialized anti-communism of a previous era, now weaponizing it against improbable targets such as Kamala Harris, while treating any mildly progressive policy as the harbinger of the imminent abolition of all things American, not least the suburbs.
