my previous ask got cut :(( anw i sent one because i saw your tags and i got a lil excited to find someone else who's interested in ryoharu and daisuzue too!! tho i see daiharu more as a brotp rather than in a shipping light but they're slowly growing on me. also i agree w all your points from your reblog of my post hehe i was really let down that they revealed her as a relative with a pseudo-bro con, i hope there's more to her too. i'd love to hear more of your thoughts about fkbu!! :D

Ah, glad to know I’m not alone :) Perks of being a multishipper I suppose :^D If Suzue and Ryo didn’t exist, Daiharu would’ve been my otp for sure lol (And it’s fine to ship them as a brotp!). Here are my thoughts:

Ryo is my fave, so it stings going through his tag and the Ryo/Haru tag on ao3 to see him mostly being portrayed as Haru’s ex whose only purpose is to make Daisuke jealous. I don’t have an issue with authors tackling this love triangle (creative freedom and all), but it’s just not my thing. I only want a genuinely good, pre-canon fic of my First Division boys, is that too much to ask? >_> 

I prefer drawing comparisons between Haru’s partnerships, seeing as Haru adopted a mentor role for both, and I like seeing Ryo and Daisuke’s reactions to his traditional brand of justice in the workforce based on what we know about them, with Ryo having once admired Haru and Daisuke with his affluent background. Since Ryo is a supporting character, I don’t expect him to appear much *cries*, but I hope he and Daisuke will have a conversation about Haru at some point, disillusioned kohai to stubborn kohai.

Daisuzu is cute oml! I love reading hints/analyses supporting the theory that Suzue could still be a possible romantic partner for Daisuke in the anime despite the “relative” reveal. The OP and her over-the-top behavior toward Daisuke are just too hard to ignore for the mystery of their relationship to be solved like that (unless you could chalk it down to Suzue being the best family member/servant ever).

I found it hilarious how Daisuke and Suzue were cool, all-around badasses in earlier episodes, only for their characters to do a 180 in the recent one. Suzue’s change was more jarring because of how we were introduced to her, but my expectations for her role in the story are higher because she seems to be the show’s tritagonist, so let's just wait and see.

I’m down for Haruzue as well, though I have no idea why the writing team would make Suzue the love interest of an anime-only character instead of the protagonist like in Yasutaka’s novel. Suzue could certainly give Haru a run for his money in the housekeeping department though haha.

Even though I’m not as invested in Daiharu as much as the other ships, I really adore their dynamic, it’s so damn entertaining! XD It’s a shame there’s an empty gap in their development from the unreleased Hong Kong ep (in light of recent events in HK) and I personally feel it should’ve taken a few more eps for them to try to adjust to each other’s investigative methods and lifestyles before we got the fanfic fest that was episode 4, but hey at least we finally saw Daisuke with his hair down <3

As for my thoughts on the anime as a whole, they just range from thirst to love for the mystery/detective genre and finally to the underlying ethics surrounding the extreme utilisation of money XD I know it has served Daisuke well so far, but since the first few eps consisted of Haru being flabbergasted at his style, I wonder when the time will come for him to solve a case the old-fashioned way. Whether it’s a gag or something pertaining to his character arc, I’d certainly like to see that.

How Batman: Soul of the Dragon Pays Homage to 70s Kung Fu and Bruce Lee

Batman: Soul of the Dragon sets Gotham’s caped crusader in a vintage martial arts homage. Directed by Sam Liu, who also directed the animated movie version of one of the greatest Batman graphic novels ever published, Batman: The Killing Joke, this is the 42nd project in the ongoing DC Universe Movies series.

However, Soul of the Dragon is an original tale, not based on a precedent comic. Like the eye popping anime-style film Batman Ninja, this is a completely stand-alone story. Batman: Soul of the Dragon is yet another chapter in the many creation tales for Batman. It tells of his martial indoctrination and joining him on this adventure are three of the best martial artists within the DC multiverse: Lady Shiva (Kelly Hu), Ben Turner a.k.a. Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White), and Richard Dragon (Mark Dacascos). 

“It’s a 70s martial arts action-adventure drama with a great sense of humor,” says Dacascos. Like so many Hollywood martial arts stories, Batman: Soul of the Dragon is told in two time periods: the present-day problem and in flashbacks to the original martial arts lessons that offer solutions. It’s a storytelling motif that can be traced back to the pioneering David Carradine’s Kung Fu TV show and Bruce Lee’s iconic Enter the Dragon. 

In many ways, Batman: Soul of the Dragon is a tribute to Enter the Dragon, when the Kung Fu and blaxploitation genres were at their height. Richard Dragon is an homage to Bruce Lee’s character ‘Lee’ in Enter the Dragon (just like in so many Jackie Chan films, the name of Lee’s character was the same as his real name). In some scenes, he dons a similar black catsuit as Lee wore when infiltrating Han’s subterranean lair but stops short from yelling ‘Wataaah!’ when fighting. 

Enter the Dragon was a game changer for martial arts movies, but it was also in the wake of the popularity of spy films of those days, specifically James Bond. Enter the Dragon is also a spy film, and it came out at a pivotal time for the Bond franchise, the same year that Roger Moore took over 007 in Live and Let Die. The spy film genre was immensely popular during the Cold War of the ‘60s, but by the ‘70s, it was looking to reinvent itself to remain popular. Enter the Dragon had the potential to launch a spy franchise for Bruce Lee, but his untimely and shocking death cut that short. Tragically, he died just prior to the release of the film. In some ways, Richard Dragon makes us ponder what a sequel to Enter the Dragon might have been like.

With his groovy afro and jive talking banter, Ben Turner steals a page from the character of Williams (Jim Kelly) from Enter the Dragon too. Batman is faintly akin to Roper (John Saxon), a token white guy amidst a diverse cast. Even the funky soundtrack by Joachim Horsley echoes the music of Enter the Dragon’s composer Lalo Shiffrin. 

“In the 70s I was very impressionable,” reflects Dacascos. “The music brings you right back to that time. I love it. I love Enter the Dragon.” 

It’s ironic that Batman would honor Bruce Lee in this way. For many, the Batman TV show of the mid-60s was their first exposure to the Little Dragon. Lee’s earliest Hollywood role was Kato, the chauffeur of The Green Hornet, which became a spin-off series of Batman, running for a single season on NBC in 1966-67.

Who is Richard Dragon?

Batman: Soul of the Dragon is a complete reimagining of Richard Dragon. In the original comic storyline, Dragon was Richard Drakunovski, a Caucasian character. He first appeared in the novel, Dragon’s Fists: Kung-Fu Master Richard Dragon by Jim Dennis, which was published the year after Enter the Dragon premiered (Jim Dennis was a pseudonym, the combination of the two authors’ names Dennis O’Neil and Jim Berry). The character was later adapted to comics by DC. 

In the original DC version, Dragon was a classmate of Ben Turner, both of whom trained under O-Sensei (played by the venerable James Hong in Batman: Soul of the Dragon). Lady Shiva was also part of this Kung Fu lineage. O-Sensei’s goddaughter Carolyn Woosan was Lady Shiva’s sister. After Woosan was killed, Lady Shiva was tricked into thinking Dragon was at fault and hunted him to take revenge. Eventually, the trick was foiled so Shiva and Dragon became allies, united against a common foe. 

In the comics, the world of Batman doesn’t cross with Dragon’s until much later. Dragon goes on to become a trainer of many DC heroes, notably the first Batgirl, Barbara Gordon. In another story, he helps Batman rehabilitate after sustaining injuries from Bane. 

In a later alternate narrative arc, Dragon’s title is usurped by his villainous student, Richard Diaz Jr. This is akin to the Richard Dragon depicted in CW’s Arrow and portrayed by Kirk Acevedo. Bronze Tiger also appears in the Arrowverse portrayed by Michael Jai White, so Batman: Soul of the Dragon marks his reprisal of the role in the animated DC universe (As a side note, David Giuntoli voices Batman for Batman: Soul of the Dragon; Guintoli is married to Elizabeth Tulloch, who plays Lois Lane in the Arrowverse, including the forthcoming Superman and Lois).

However, neither Drakunovski nor Diaz figure into this latest incarnation of Richard Dragon in Batman: Soul of the Dragon. Here, he’s more like a Bruce Lee clone, only cooler. Dacascos didn’t follow the comics or the Arrowverse depiction. 

“Yeah, I did not know that at all,” he confesses. “The script was so good that everything I felt that I needed to portray him was already on the page….All of my information for the character I found in the brilliant script that Jeremy Adams wrote and the information that was given to me by our producers and our director Sam Liu.”

Nevertheless, Dragon was a dream role for Dacascos. As a longtime fan of Batman, his favorite live action portrayal was Michael Keaton. 

“I love his interpretation,” he says with a laugh. “There’s a sense of humor that he has and he stands out.” 

As soon as his manager and agents sent him the script, he was hooked. 

“I saw the description of DC Comics, Batman, Richard Dragon. And then I just jumped right into the script and after just a couple of pages, I knew I loved it. And the more I read, the more passionate I was about it. Before I even finished the script, I’d already emailed my representatives back and said, ‘Yes, please, please, please. I want to do this.’” Dacascos was tickled to be cast as his Kung Fu brother. “I’ve been privileged to play a character that is friends with Batman,” gushes Dacascos. 

Beyond being a bat-buddy, what really appealed to Dacascos was Dragon’s strong moral compass. 

“He’s not ignorant to the fact that evil is there, always has been, is, and will be,” explains Dacascos. “But with his training and his apparent good heart, he is able to maintain that battle with the negative, with the evil and take it on, maintaining his open heart and his sense of humor. I think his sense of humor is a part of his armor. He’s able to deflect with whimsy of the situation. He is a very loyal student, he is a very loyal friend, and I think his force – what drives him – is his love.”

From Stunt Work to Voice Work

By casting Dacascos, White, and Hu, Batman: Soul of the Dragon goes that extra step by placing genuine martial artists into animated roles. Throughout his teen years, Dacascos was a genuine martial arts champion. 

“The thing is,” says Dacascos humbly, “my parents are both martial arts teachers.” 

That’s an understatement. His father is Grandmaster Al Dacascos, a pioneering master in America who founded his own style of Wun Hop Kuen Do. His stepmother is Malia Bernal, a noted champion and coach of many other champions like Karen Shepherd. “My brother and I were basically forced into our first martial arts tournament at age six.” 

Dacascos began his acting career in martial arts films, several of which were groundbreaking. His earliest lead role was in Only the Strong which was the first film to showcase the Brazilian martial art Capoeira. Brotherhood of the Wolf was a unique French period horror Kung Fu mash up that completely broke the mold for the martial arts genre. Having such an extensive background in the martial arts informed Dacascos on how to approach the fight scenes. 

“As a martial artist, all I have to do is just think about it and I’m feeling it again,” he says. “So that part felt like going back home. When we were doing the action sequences, I just gave myself space to move around and then take the direction from Sam Liu and went for it…It’s all in your head and in your heart, and of course in your breath.”

Dacascos loved how the fight scenes in Batman: Soul of the Dragon came out, so much so that he’s contemplating bringing it to live action in his own way. 

“I thought what would be really fun for me to do is actually in real life physicalize the forms, that form that Richard Dragon does,” he says. “So I’m going to maybe make it a little challenge for myself and learn those moves in real life…I would love to be Richard Dragon in real life. He’s really cool.”

In many ways, Batman: Soul of the Dragon feels more like a creation story for Richard Dragon than a typical Batman story. Batman is almost a secondary character. With Marvel making such strides in diversity with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings anticipated for summer 2021, DC needs to up its inclusion game. Could this be a stepping stone for Richard Dragon to become his own franchise? 

“I hope so,” confesses Dacascos. “I hope that Batman: Soul of the Dragon continues and we do a sequel or series.” 

While he is hopeful that there’s a future for Dragon, it’s the spirit of Batman: Soul of the Dragon that he finds most motivating. Like the title says, it’s got a lot of soul. “The thing is, it’s so much more than that because of the lessons that the students learn in the martial arts sequences taught by the wonderful James Hong who plays O-Sensei. The lines that Jeremy Adams wrote are so profound, and like any great teachers, they transcend the martial arts. It’s so much more philosophical and deeper. So, the story has the martial arts action, but it has heart, and it’s sexy, and it still has a great sense of humor.”

“Are you sure we shouldn’t just go?” Sudi said. “Come back later, maybe? You know how grumpy she is when she first gets back, Ellis.”

“Don’t start.” Kato groaned. “Just because you worship the ground she walks on—”

There was a snort, so loud and scathing it could only have come from Oz or Ellis.

“I worship the ground she walks on? Are you serious right now, Kato? I’m not the one in—”

Overheard while Alinora was eavesdropping, hoping this group would let slip why they’d decided to come visit so soon after she got back from a mission.

“Damn straight.” A popping noise. Jezebel grimaced. Ellis cracking his knuckles, no doubt. “Now, settle yerselves down and wait for the lassie to get changed an’ cleaned an’ whatever else she needs t’ do. If yer feelin’ real charitable, mebbe see about makin’ her a drink for when she gets out.”

“She doesn’t drink,” Kato pointed out, and Jezebel rolled her eyes.

“Hells. Why’d I bring any of you idjits, eh? Not one of ye has any gods-damned sense!” Quiet for a second, and then tersely, he said, “I meant some tea or somethin’.”

More eavesdropping.

“We all know who the most likely suspect is,” Polonius said. “After all, those are the exact symptoms of the powder we gave her—”

“And you know her relationship with the grandmaster has been suspicious from the beginning,” Driza added. “He put entirely too much trust in her—”

Accidental eavesdropping, this time. Overheard when she went to investigate the grandmaster’s death.

“For as long as memory reaches, it has been us—the Divines—against Lady Fate. The Spider, we call her. Our vendetta has spilled into Eldora before, both in ways that have marked history and in ways that have gone unnoticed. However, our battle has gotten more difficult, within the last century or so. Fate has turned one of our own against us—infected her, somehow. And in doing so, she turned our attention away from Eldora, allowing her to manipulate Kai’os; to use him and his people for her own twisted purposes.

“When we realized what she was doing… we tried to move against her. But how do you move against something, someone, that can see everything you do before you do it? That can snuff the life of your allies with a snip of her scissors?

“It was a question without an answer…

“Until one day, about twenty eight years ago.”

Jezebel pursed her lips.

“A soul appeared. A new soul, primed for delivery. No Reaper had been scheduled to bear it to Eldora; there was no mark in our books, no indication that it was ever supposed to exist, truly. But there it was, plain as day. There was a bit of panic. My more bureaucratic siblings combed the archives for a reference, searching for some reason that this soul would be there, without a Reaper to deliver it.

“They found nothing.

“And so it was that Death sent me to the Guild of Secrets. The woman I spoke to was unsurprised by the news that I brought, though she did mention that it was ‘earlier than she had expected.’ Still, though. She told me what the soul was, though she would not explain how it came to be, nor why we had not been informed of its coming.

“The soul… was never meant to exist.”

Counting this as two for the last one, since it’s so long! But this is when she’s told a story about her origins :P It’s the last quote I have “about” Alinora in the rewrite!

Now for Alinora’s quotes!

Kato shook his head. “They’re both more politician than assassin now. If the people demand it, they’ll get rid of you one way or another—whether by exile or execution.”

Jezebel pursed her lips. “Well, there’s not much I can do from in here, Kato. If you’re so concerned, why don’t you stop preaching to me and start doing something about it? It’s not like Driza is the only one capable of spreading propaganda.”

Kato snapped his fingers. “That’s true! We can make people see the truth. Sudi’s got his bloodline to fall back on, and Flynn’s pretty charismatic. The two of them can make people see your innocence. I bet we can convince Ellis and Rolfe to help, too. Oz, Elan, and I can investigate your case. I don’t trust Driza not to try and meddle.”

Jezebel found herself smiling again. “Sounds like you have a plan.”

Trying to puzzle out how to get herself out of house arrest. Or, rather, getting Kato and the others out of her hair so that she can get out of house arrest.

“I’m a little more concerned about what a reaper is doing in my bedroom than I am about what your name is,” she snapped, gesturing to the reaper with her dagger.

Threatening a celestial being, because of course she is XD

“You’ve got to be joking,” she said faintly. “No—I have to be hallucinating.” She leaned against her dresser, dagger still clutched in her right hand. With her left, she rubbed at her temples. “I can’t fight Kai’os. I’m not— He’s a Slaeyr, and I’m… not. I don’t have magic, I can barely nullify a basic fireball without feeling like I’m going to pass out—and you want me to—!” She shook her head. “Nope. Not doing it—I’m not even going to entertain you. Just— no. Go away, goodbye, find someone else.”

Denying her call to adventure. That’s also the last decent quote I have for Alinora out of the revisions. So, back to the first draft for these last two :D

Alinora held her gaze. She drew up her chin. Stepped away from Rivana, from Oreyn. She looked away from Elaena, and addressed the room at large. Despite her red-rimmed eyes, her tone was low and strong. “I will take Weaver’s Bane. I will engage Kai’os directly. I will be the one to kill him. I owe him that.”

The purpose of this letter is not to make meaningless, though heartfelt, apologies. It’s purpose is three part. The first, gratitude. The second… I must ask you to do some things for me. I regret having to ask, but someone must do it. Perhaps you would have done it anyway. The last… to answer some questions. Not nearly enough but some. The ones I can predict.

Thank you for putting your life on the line for my people. Thank you for bringing them supplies, so that they could continue to endure against Kai’os. Thank you for aiding them in battle. Thank you for providing them with your knowledge, your talents, your crew. And thank you for taking this journey with me. For doing your best to teach me, for taking us into dangerous, unknown places. I know it wasn’t quite me you did it for, but that doesn’t make me any less grateful for it. You did a wonderful thing, and I will never forget it. Nor should you.

Though you have already done so much for me, there is something that I would ask. My people will need help in the coming days. So will the slaeyr. You have already proven yourself someone to be trusted. Help to teach those who never learned to sail. Help them gather supplies. I won’t ask you to broker trade agreements or re-establish our diplomacy—that, I feel, is more a job for Rivana and Oreyn—but do what you can. Please.

“Not everyone can be Russ”

So I’m not really sure where to start a whole ass blog but since my rants are constantly triggered by random content I see, I'm gonna stick to what I know and not try to psych myself out and delay this blog further. So we’ll jump right in. I have to shoutout Kato on the Track for always validating the things I think I'm learning on my own, and for packaging those lessons into words that make sense and that I can share with others. If you’re not familiar with Kato, Dame Mec, DJ Pain, Sound Advice, Music Entrepreneur Club and so many other local platforms/people of the sort, you really playin yourself,  PERIODT. These guys really care about layin it out for you in a meaningful way which takes a lot of work. so WATCH AND LISTEN.  So, between yesterday and today, Kato posted a few short videos talking about the subjects we are about to explore. Until I can figure out how to attach said videos, go watch them on IG @katoproducer. The one posted today is titled “Not everyone can be Russ” and I feel that on SUCH a spiritual level. If you’re familiar with Russ at all, you can probably kinda guess what this is about. For those not familiar, Russ is a rapper/song writer/producer/author etc etc etc. who has gained some big recognition for his blueprint as an “independent” artist. I personally don't really listen to Russ or closely follow his career, however his relevance in the industry is undeniable. if you watch any interview with Russ, its clear he's garnered fame by figuring out how to be an independent powerhouse, more or less. (Admittedly, the technical “BUSINESS” side of the industry is still something I lack a lot of knowledge in cause it involves politics that can be annoying, however I'm always tryna find people to teach me more things. If this is you, tap inwardly) But basically, the point Kato is trying to make is that its not necessarily better to be doing EVERYTHING yourself with zero out-sourcing/collaboration. We see this A LOT on applications for Tucson Hip Hop Festival (shoutout THHF fam I love you guys) It seems like young artists are quick to tell us about how they rap AND PRODUCER/WRITE/RECORD/ENGINEER all their own music in their closet. it seems to be a point made to try to impress, when really it can be a red flag. This might be just my opinion, however I have a lot of conversations about this with the mentors I keep close to me and they seem to share my sentiments. The problem with doing EVERYTHING yourself is that it can quickly create a “master of none” situation. The beautiful part of todays music industry is that the technology to do the basic things yourself and is mostly free and at your fingertips. Every kid with an iphone5 can make a rap song. This is one of the reasons that hip hip is one of the most popular genres in the world right now. With popularity comes intense levels of over-saturation. You have to focus your talents and efforts and TIME. If you’re a rapper SLASH producer, ask yourself which one you're more passionate about, which one would be devastating to leave behind? Now, this doesn't mean you’re forever disqualified from making beats in the future or trying your hand at rapping. I think a big factor in a hip hop career these days is TIMING. Take note that Russ released 11 albums and 87 singles CONSECUATIVELY AND FREE OF CHARGE before he really got meaningful recognition with Soundcloud. Not to mention the fact that producers and DJ’s are more recognized and showcased as separate entities, locally and nationally. A big reason is the fact that social media made branding so easy and mostly free. Now, if you’re someone who just likes to experiment and create music and try your hand at rapping, DO NOT LET ME DISCOURAGE YOU. Everyones gotta figure things out, its important that you’re exploring and creating DESPITE everything. Consistency is key. Do not let me dictate your dreams. HOWEVER, if you're looking to take the next step and actually pursue a career, this is advice you may want to take to heart. It sounds counter-intuitive but the best way to gain success as an INDEPENDENT artist is COLLABORATION WITH YOUR PEERS. Another point Kato makes is how up-and-coming rappers are immediately trying to work with artists or entities 3-4 steps ahead of them. Theres many rappers who try to afford themselves the PRIVILEGE of skipping necessary steps in their career. Most notably the LOCAL step. I see so many rappers following this romanticized narrative of being an INDEPENDANT artist, fuck a label got it out the dirt do it all on my own yadda yadda, but are so quick to bash or dismiss their local scene that they have yet to even explore, all the while on social media spamming every single major record label and tagging every legendary rapper they can think of in every single irrelevant thing they post. I can't make any sense of that honestly. I CONSTANTLYYYYYYY have kids reaching out to me sayin they wanna legitimize their local scene, PUT ON for their city, put their state ON THE MAP, help build their community, PUSH THE CULTURE, be socially active and change lives etc etc etc. and have never been to a SINGLE local event (even as a supporter), can't name a SINGLE leader or influential person in their hip hop community or a SINGLE local rapper they admire(who aren't just one of their homies).  I LOVE that energy and passion. but without the KNOWLEDGE of what's going on around you, and the people laying down the roadwork for you, you look low-key disrespectful and very under informed. I mean, this is quite literally the bane of my existence. If you're involved in organizing shows or events or platforms on any level, you know how many people will hit you up to be on every single show/festival but HAVE not and WILL not ever attend or support otherwise. I'm sorry but there's no other way around it. I can speak for the whole state when I say that there are locally conscience artists that quite literally “put on” for their community every weekend and have for years and years. if you message me on IG for coverage on my platform and we have 2 mutual friends, THATS A HUGE RED FLAG. There are many experienced and talented people around you who want nothing more than to provide opportunities and support to pass the torch to the next generation. Its okay to reach out for support and ask for help as long as you’re worthy of it. Dame Mec always says that if you’re reaching out to someone ASKING for something (no matter how small) you gotta make sure you’re working JUST as hard or ALMOST as hard as the people you’re reaching out to. “CLOUT” does not exist if you’re actually worthy of the support, it just comes and it lasts longer. Building in your local scene can really boost the longevity of your career and helps you find “success” in unexpected places. And maybe i’m the one romanticizing now, but asking for something should not be your first contact with said person. Your local networking, knowledge and SUPPORT OF OTHERS should not come solely from YOUR OWN desire for success, wealth or influence. It should come from your utter love and uncompromising passion for HIP HOP and every avenue of culture that goes along with it. You should already be attending hip hop events and having hip hop experiences, not because you decide you're a rapper one day, but because its the thing you enjoy the most and absolutely cannot see your life without it. Sometimes I let myself get annoyed by the lack of knowledge and lack of willingness to learn that I see plaguing hip hop today and I always remember what one of my homies/mentors always says when I wanna talk shit; “their heart just isn't in it” (Pike obvi) and that's just so damn true. If your heart isn't in it, everyone around you is gonna figure that out way before you do. Don't let your ego ruin your career before you even have one

Summary: Learning you may have had a one-night stand with the bane of your existence is bad enough. But having to team up with said one-night stand to track down possible video evidence is just a recipe for a bad day.

As delicious as aged Corellian Whiskey was, it left one hell of an aftertaste.

You peeled your tongue from the roof of your mouth and scrubbed it across your teeth, trying to rid them of the vile fermentation that clung to them in a fuzzy film that your toothpaste just couldn’t quite get off. There had been a thought about hiding the bags that hung beneath your eyes and taming the wild flyaways that sprung from your head, a fleeting one, but a thought nonetheless. Chances were the majority of the fleet wouldn’t look much better than you anyway. Your only saving grace was there were no scheduled flights today. Red Squadron would be spending the day with their feet planted firmly on the ground. Thank the Maker.

You stumbled into the cantina, shielding your eyes from the intrusive light that seemed so much brighter than normal.  The cinched arms of your flight suit hung off your hips, you’d gotten it most of the way on, and you were 75% sure your tank top was clean. Most of them were stained with various mechanical fluids at this point so it wasn’t like it was a new look for you. The thick orange material was just too thick, and you were in no mood to bear the heat of a D’Qar afternoon any more than you needed to.

“Daaaamn, boss.”

You actively flinched away from the far-too enthusiastic voice that had the nerve to intrude upon your sulking. Bright, blue eyes raked across your disheveled form with just a hint of disapproval, blonde waves infuriatingly impeccable. Cora. You loved her, you did, but her ability to end the night barely remembering her own name and start the next morning fresh as a Noobian daisy was something you’d never been able to stop hating her for.

“Shhh.”

You heaved your hand up, pressing a finger to her lips to stop the assault on your eardrums that was sure to follow.

“Where’s Kato?” You croaked.

She laughed, pulling your hand from her mouth and taking hold of your arm.

“He popped off to talk to Miss Mira the second you stumbled in,” she chirped, dragging you in the direction of what you hoped was somewhere you could just sit down and wait for death. “He’ll be bringing you his life-restoring concoction in no time.”

You ducked your head and allowed yourself to be pulled across the cantina and dumped into your usual chair at your usual table, collapsing across the top and burying your face in your arms. It wasn’t quite as loud as it normally was at this time in the morning, so it appeared that as bad a shape as you were in, you didn’t seem to be the worst. Just as the spinning in your head reached it’s peak and you opened yourself up to the sweet embrace of death, a firm hand grasped your shoulder and hauled you into a sitting position.

Your mouth dropped open in preparation to unleash an unholy torrent of cutting insults until your eyes squinted Kato’s face into focus.

“You better drink this before the rest of your pilots show up. They’ll never let you forget it.”

He placed the cup in your hand, and you wasted no time raising it to your lips. You’d thank him when you could form coherent sentences again. The thick, green liquid coated your mouth and slid down your throat, but the knowledge of the sweet relief that was in store for you helped you fight against the churning in your stomach. The first time he’d made it for you, you’d made the mistake of asking what was in it. He had taken your hands in his, looked deeply into your eyes, and said in the ominous voice you had ever heard:

“You don’t want to know.”

You hadn’t wanted to drink it, but after he had coaxed it down your throat and you had felt the effects, you’d never questioned him again.

“You know,” Kato drawled, leaning lazily against the table next to you. “You look a lot better than I thought you would, considering the… company you had last night.”

You grimaced through a thick, sticky swallow and shot him a confused look before yelping at the sharp pain that exploded across your shin.

“Cora what the shit?!” You howled, lifting your glass into the air to try and salvage the nectar of life that sloshed up the sides and rubbing the burn away with your other hand.

Cora’s wide, panicked eyes darted between your face and Kato’s, perfectly pouted pink lips gaping between the two of you for a frantic moment before she remembered how to speak.

“S-sorry boss,” she squeaked with a shrug. “Leg spasms. My thighs still cramp up since the crash.”

You shot her an irritated look, but lacked the energy to do little more than raise your cup back to your mouth.

“What the hell are you going on about now?” You asked after another large swallow, wiping the corners of your mouth on the back of your hand.

Kato blinked back at you, suddenly nervous gaze snapping from your face to the frightening, pointed look the tiny blonde shot him from across the table.

“U-um, well- “ he stuttered.

“Kato, just spit it the hell- “

“What do you remember from last night?” Cora blurted over you, leaning onto her elbows to look at you carefully.

You looked back and forth between them for a moment, slowly lowering the cup to the table.

“What do you mean?”

“Just,” Cora began, pressing her lips together and drawing a sharp breath through her nose before continuing. “What is the last thing you remember?”

You rolled your eyes, but seeing no end to the interrogation, obliged.

“Black Squadron was throwing Snap a make-up birthday party, which, I’m sure you agree was a perfect opportunity to break out the whiskey Han sent me.”

She smiled and nodded, but stayed silent.

“I had a few drinks, gave my good wishes to the birthday boy, you-know-who showed up, so I decided to bail, ran in to Jess and you guys and we went to the hangar for a few more drinks, then I went home. Alone.”

She rested her chin on her hands, narrowing her eyes as she watched you. You could practically hear the gears in her head turning.

“Not… exactly.”

Your eyebrow shot into your hairline.

“What do you mean not exactly?”

She sighed, dropping her arms to the table and pressing her palms flat against the top.

“You did go home… but a bit more happened before then… and you didn’t go alone… “

You didn’t speak, but watching her squirm under your gaze was satisfying enough.

“Someone… else… showed up at the hangar…”

A chill ran up your spine. There was a relatively small list of people that warranted the kind of reaction that had been elicited from your closest friends, and only one name was coming to mind.

“Who?” You hissed.

Her mouth dropped open, and you watched the words die in her throat. Her eyes snapped helplessly to Kato before slipping over your shoulder and widening in a way you were certain she had no real control over. It felt like your life had been put into slow motion as you turned your head, meeting the wide-eyed look Jess gave you when she clearly had something she needed to speak to you about before landing on the head of unruly dark curls that walked in after her.

“No…”

You whipped your head back around to face them a little too quickly for your current state.

“If this is some kind of joke it isn’t funny.”

Their silence spoke volumes.

“There’s no possible way…”

More silence.

You whirled back around helplessly, unsure what seeing his stupid face again would solve but not entirely sure what else to do. Nausea twisted tight knots in your stomach when his eyes seemed to be waiting to meet yours from across the room. You barely lasted a more than a second of full eye-contact with Poe Dameron, your arch-nemesis, however childish Cora said having an arch-nemesis was, and apparently if your closest friends were to be trusted, lover. Kato’s miracle concoction crawled back up your throat at the thought, and you spat out a string of words that conveyed your intention before darting out of the cantina. You wanted to be behind closed doors when the few contents of your stomach made a reappearance.

A few deep breaths, a splash of cold water to the face, and a stiff cup of caf, and you’d managed to calm the raging storm in your stomach. Kato’s potion had finally taken effect, and you’d managed to work yourself into a state where it no longer felt like your skeleton was trying to crawl out of your skin. You’d resisted the urge to sit in the fresher under the hottest water it was capable of producing until your flesh melted off, ultimately convincing yourself that was a touch melodramatic. You were an adult. You could handle a regrettable one-night stand. Eventually the mortifying thumbs-up and sly winks you were receiving would stop, and everyone would move on to the next scandal. Until then, you would take out the frustration on all the little bugs and quirks you’d been meaning to work out of your beloved ship.

Once you’d nursed yourself back to a state of productivity, you’d beelined for the hangar and set to work without another word. You didn’t know where Cora and Kato were, and despite the look you’d seen on her face in the cantina, Jess was also nowhere to be seen. It was just as well. You had no intention of interaction with another person for a while. Because it seemed everything in the galaxy had made a pact to turn against you, the wrench you gripped in your cramping fingers seemed bound and determined not to move. You jerked it free from the crusted bolt you’d been attempting to coax free with a growl. With one more inspection of the bolt in question, you backed out of the maintenance compartment, mumbling obscenities under your breath, and turned on your heel to face your tool cart only to crash into a solid, warm figure. You realized with a sickening fury that you didn’t need to see the face to know who it was, you recognized their scent instantly.

“Woah, sorry,” Poe said with an awkward chuckle, innocently putting his hands into the air and taking a few steps back.

You glared holes into his head in response, folding your grease-slicked arms across your chest.

“Is there something I can help you with, Commander?” You ground out between your teeth.

His eyes floated across your face in a way that made you feed oddly exposed, and you fought the urge to squirm as you stared him into submission.

“I, uh… “ he started lamely, wringing his hands in front of him. “I was thinking we should… talk.”

Oh, no. Not happening.

You shouldered passed him, nonchalantly tossing the wrench onto your cart and rifling through your tools.

“About what?”

He didn’t respond right away. You could feel him fidgeting behind you. You were also slightly ashamed at how much satisfaction it gave you.

“About… about last night… “

You continued to search through your tools at a leisurely pace, picking through them one-by-one until finding the one you were looking for.

“I barely remember anything from last night, Commander Dameron, and the parts I do remember don’t concern you.” You spun back around to stride back to your ship without so much as sparing him a second glance. “If I can’t remember something, I can’t talk about it, now can I?”

Ignoring his sigh, you set back to work freeing the bolt from the dried, crusted oil that imprisoned it in place.

“That’s how we’re going to do this?”

Though your mind created a list of biting responses, you elected to simply continue to ignore him. Eventually he’d get the hint and go away. The seconds ticked by, and your skin still bristled at his presence behind you.

Fine,” he said after a while. “Will you at least tell me if you saw my datapad?”

You heaved a sigh, dropping your chin to your chest as your hands halted their work.

“Why the hell would I care about your damn datapad?”

The awkwardness, it at all possible, spiked to a record high between you.

“Because, the last time I saw it… was… well we were… “

The glare you shot over your shoulder was all the motivation he needed.

“The last time I remember having it was when we were… together.”

You stared at him while your mind caught up.

“…And?”

His eyes shot up, down, to the side, anywhere but your face as his hands found his hips.

“And… I’m pretty sure that the… that the video function… was used.”

For the next several seconds all you could hear was a high-pitched whine and your own heartbeat.

“I’m sorry?”

He winced at your low hiss, still reluctant to meet your eyes as he increased the distance between the two of you by a few strides.

“I’m pretty sure- “

“Well you better get really sure really damn quick!” You wailed. “For fuck’s sake, Dameron.”

You pushed off of the fuselage, drawing in a deep, steading breath as you paced the short distance between your ship and tool cart.

“What the hell were you thinking?!”

He shifted uncomfortably from side to side, a brilliant shade of red painting his face and neck.

“You didn’t seem to have any complaints.”

The look you gave him could have melted planets. That’s it. You were smashing the next bottle Han sent you, regardless of what it was. Poe seemed to sense there were no words that would help him out of his current situation, and that the sound of his voice would only act as fuel for your roaring fire of rage. After several laps, and several cleansing breaths, your fists unclenched, your fingernails no longer tore through the tender flesh of your palms, and you felt confident enough to speak.

“Okay,” you breathed with a firm set of your shoulders. “Well, obviously we have to find it, so get to remembering. The sooner we find it, the sooner I don’t have to look at you anymore.”

You didn’t give any room for argument, tossing your tools unceremoniously back on your cart with a clunk and turning on your heel to log your progress before beginning what was sure to be the worst scavenger hunt you’d ever participated in. You could feel his eyes on you, but the only indication he gave that he agreed were two simple words.

“Yes, ma’am.”

so i started a rewrite of The Martyr Queen, which i’ve been working on here and there, and i decided to start this one a little earlier than the original draft, to give some more build up/introduction before the inciting incident! which means i get to write more of alinora interacting with her mentor (though, she still goes by her alias, jezebel, at this point!). scenes with them always make me laugh, and this is no exception:

“Told ye she was back!” Ellis, the dwarf, crowed.

“Didn’t have to kick me,” Kato snapped. “I’ve got eyes, old man.” He climbed to his feet; the beads tipping his braids clicked together as he did.

“But do ye use them, boy?”

Jezebel rolled her eyes and blew past them all in favor of pushing her door open. “I am not dealing with any of you right now,” she said. Ellis caught the door before she could finish slamming it shut.

“See, ye say that ev’ry time we turn up,” he said cheerfully, never happier than when she was griping at him. “’Sides, you’re not allowed to kick yer mentor out. S’in the rules.”

“Not any rules I ever read,” she muttered, but let the group flood into her quarters anyway.

i have been planning, writing & rewriting, thinking about, outlining, worldbuilding, daydreaming about this story for over four years! i actually think it’s somewhere more like six??? or even seven! but this iteration is pretty young--alinora as the main character is about four years old & then the plot being what it is is more like one year old!

b u t. these characters have been my constant companions during all of that time & i love them SO MUCH. (so if anyone was wondering why their backstories are so developed,,, this is why.) there have been a lot of things i’ve had to cut and change, but i’ve finally reached a point where this is the story i want to tell, and i’m happy with it--even the imperfect bits, and the bits that i’m going to need to change/add in! 

i have a ton planned for these babies--a ton that i really need to sit down and actually,,, write out so i can figure out how many books it’s gonna take 😂 & i’m really very excited that people like them & are interested in hearing their stories! i’ve been the only one that’s really known/cared about them for so long that,,, it’s just. it’s wild, and it’s great! ❤
