I'm still not over the fact that we could have had a Brekker-Ghafa circus duo in Season 1.

It's just rude how I have yet to see a Now You See Me! Six of Crows AU.
NO BUT WAIT, WAIT. Bear with me. The Crows as illusionists and magicians brought together to create elaborate performances that may or may not be a way to extract revenge on a few people (Jan, Heleen, and Pekka, we're looking at you) and steal a lot of money in the process. The group could be either formed by Kaz himself, or like in the movie, they're brought together by a mysterious individual for a job (in this, it could be Jan to commit the equivalent of the Ice Court Heist, until the Crows turn back on him).
Like. Imagine. Kaz would definitely be an amazing escape artist and the master mind of the operations. He would have the best sleight of hand ever. With his flair for dramatics, I think he would also be a great performer, and have a whole "character" for the show: you know, Dirtyhands, with his all black clothes, raspy voice, dry wit, slight smirk, scary monologues and taunts. He's not even pretending, really, but it works really well on stage, and the public loves it, loves when he's taunting them, and legit creeping them out.
Inej would be into the escape thing as well, and she would love the tricks where she vanishes and then apparates in a different corner of the room, or just behind someone in the audience (they wouldn't even notice until one the Crows points it out or Inej taps them on the shoulder. The number of times they almost had to call an ambulance because she legit gives them heart attacks). I feel like she would also be a contortionist who's able to fit in small boxes and cupboards, to the point where you start to ask yourself if she even has bones. She would incorporate acrobatics in her performances.
Jesper would love flashy tricks with cards, coins, and so on. I know that sleight of hand is more Kaz's thing in the book, but I feel like it would suit him well, too. Kind of like the Jack Wilder of the group. He would do tricks with guns, bullets and shooting, of course. Also, I feel like he would be the one the Crows rely on to distract the crowd, to catch, hold, and redirect their attention where it's needed. Kaz is good at that, too, but Jesper is really the one who can put them at ease and charm them (especially if it's a single person or a few they call on stage).
Wylan would handle technical aspects: light, flash bombs, smoke bombs, fireworks, visual and sound effects, music and sound, material, etc. I think he would know exactly what type of soundtrack and light to choose to create maximum effect and efficiently hold/distract the crowd's attention. I don't see him as a main performer, but I think there would be one memorable occasion where he would "blow himself up" or set fire to himself on stage and then reapparate, completely fine. It remains one of the Crows' most watched performances.
Nina would definitely be the Merritt McKinney of the group. She would be all about hypnosis and mentalism, and I know that real-life hypnotism doesn't work like it's portrayed in the movie, but let's just pretend. With her knowledge of anatomy and medicine (she could be an ex med student or nurse), she would know exactly how to use the human body, mind, and blood flow to her advantage – it would be a nice parallel to her canon powers. She knows how to gather information from her targets, is amazing at subtle interrogation, and she, too, would be very good at charming the crowd (her and Jesper as a the sexiest bi duo ever). Also, I think she would fight tooth and nail to incorporate a dramatic quick change sequence on stage. ("Nina, we don't need that." "Shut up, Kaz, you don't understand, I have been waiting my entire LIFE for this moment").
I admit, I have trouble deciding what Matthias would do in this universe. Like Wylan, I don't see him as a main performer, I think he would remain more in the shadows and act as an assistant to the others (catching Inej, helping Nina change, setting Wylan's material, etc.). If the Crows need animals for their show, he's definitely the one to take care of them. However, in the books, he is our guys' main source of information on the Ice Court, and I feel like in a modern au, he would parallel this: he would be the one tasked with research on the Mark, digging up everything about them, their background, family, habits, the lay outs of a place the Crows intend to rob, etc.
Or alternatively: Matthias is their inside man in the FBI. This would work even better, I think. So yes, he's the Dylan Rhodes of the AU, minus the revenge.
Feel free to add anything if you have other ideas!

'So it goes...' by Taylor Swift IS a Kanej song and no one can tell me otherwise
See you in the dark All eyes on you, my magician
I'm yours to keep And I'm yours to lose You know I'm not a bad girl But I do bad things with you So it goes
All eyes on me, your illusionist All eyes on us I make all your gray days clear
Come here, dressed in black now
You did a number on me But honestly, baby, who's counting? I did a number on you But honestly, baby, who's counting? You did a number on me But honestly, baby, who's counting? Who's counting?

I haven't been able to get this little annotation out of my brain since I read it — because in the fandom, we all make little jokes about how Kaz is just swooning over Inej in his head throughout the series and how massively it contradicts what he says, but THIS ... this is such a paradigm shift. This means that Kaz has continuously shut down every single thought that was romantic or had any hint of desire ever since he caught the slightest hint of feelings.
WHICH MEANS ... the massive flood of these kinds of thoughts throughout the Duology isn't a normal thing for him, this is years worth of supressed romantic desire that he is finally letting see the light of acknowledgement and that completely changes the way I'd write how Kaz thinks and feels pre-SOC. I'M TOTALLY NORMAL ABOUT THIS, ABSOLUTELY FINE !!

maybe I'm reading into this too hard but... we clown on kaz for the sheer irony of “the trick is not to love anything, rollins", and considering this is not long after the bathroom scene, yeah lol, HOT bit of irony there. but... kaz said the trick.
yes, the overt meaning is the strategy, the way to do it, but... kaz said the trick, and this is kaz 'nothing up my sleeves' brekker, the sleight of hand magician. I think he meant that it only has to look that way. you'll see what kaz damn well wants you to see; he knows how to constantly turn up the face of the dirtyhands card while never letting you get so much as a look at kaz rietveld, even if he's somewhere in the deck. it's all about illusions, street magic, trickery! rollins' mistake was not loving his son, it was making it too visible, accidentally showing his hand. you only have to think the coin has disappeared; you can't see the coin, or the card, or the woman in the box, but they haven't really vanished. they're still there, somewhere, slipped away to maintain the illusion. kaz's love isn't visible, anymore... but that doesn't mean it's nonexistent.
(incidentally, what is kaz's greatest trick, if not finding the girl who seems to have vanished?)

—bejeweled; kaz brekker.
ʚ kaz brekker x reader | grishaverse | 1,2k words. ʚ from this ask. | dating kaz brekker, and he gifts you jewelry as trinkets like the crow he is. ʚ established relationship; crow club drinking. ʚ a/n i love this idea so much! i'm sorry if it's rushed or slightly off. thank you for reading!
Tumblr media
It started out small. Kaz had a ring he looped through a silver rolo chain necklace that he wore, tucked under his shirt, until one day it wasn't there anymore. The ring was a simple silver thin band with the letter R carved into the inside of it. It was a barely noticeable part of his get up, but Inej, the sharp-eyed wraith, noticed the lack of shining silver chain under his collar.
“Did you lose your necklace?” Inej asked, settling into the barstool next to him in the Crow Club. Kaz looked up from his glass, acknowledging her with a brief glance from under his hat.
“No,” he replied, not elaborating any further. Kaz Brekker couldn't help the way his eyes fall onto you as you sat at one of the tables with Jesper and Wylan. You laughed, throwing down your hand of five cards victoriously. His eyes caught the glimpse of silver around your left middle finger. A ring. His ring.
An involuntary smile crept onto his lips. It vanished within a second, as if it had never been there in the first place.
You turned your head, catching his stare before you sauntered over towards him. Kaz didn't say a word, turning to the back door of the club that led to a mostly deserted alley, hoping you would get the hint to trail after him.
The door clicked shut behind him, but not three seconds passed, it swung open again. You stood there, grinning smugly towards him.
“If I didn't know any better, I might start thinking that you missed me,” you said, brushing some lint off of his collar.
His gloved hand caught yours, holding it in place as you tilted your head to look at him. “I thought it was the other way around.”
He smoothed out your palm, pressing the back of your hand to his lips briefly. When he pulled away, he was twirling the ring around your finger. It was intimate—the ring was his and it was on you. You were his, as scary as the thought was to him, he liked it just as much.
Next, it was an ankle bracelet. A small little thing, usually tucked safely inside the neck of your boots. Then, eventually he started bringing whatever jewelry he found his hands on.
Tumblr media
Your last job was for a painting—expensive, six digits in Kruge, and it went mostly smooth-sailing, other than a couple of close calls. Everyone was safe, celebrating at the Crow Club. Drinking, dancing and laughing like there was no tomorrow. The ever-brooding Dirtyhands seemed to be in a lighter mood as well.
You danced to the music, trotting towards the Bar for a refill. His eyes trailed after you, trying to catch your glance. When he locked eyes with you, his head tilted slightly to the back door. His gloved hand definitely pulled another card from his sleeves and he revealed his hand on the gambling table. Sly cheater.
Jesper groaned loudly. “Kaz wins? Again?!”
Nina laughed merrily, leaning on Matthias' shoulder as she shuffled the deck again.
Kaz stood up as you were already closing the door behind you.
“I need a drink,” said Kaz. The rest of the table did not question him as they were already starting another round, this time with Wylan as a challenger.
Kaz was out the door in seconds.
“Seems our rendezvous is compromised, Brekker,” you said when the door clicked shut behind him. You gestured to a drunken man, passed out by the door, snoring loudly.
His nose scrunched up in disgust, noticing the putrid smell of alcohol and puke. “I wanted to give you this.”
Like a magician, he pulled a string of chain necklace out of thin air. Kaz and his sleight of hand was something you found extremely endearing.
“You took it from the house.” Your eyes widened, noticing the intricately-shaped charm of the necklace. It was the silhouette of a crow. You mentioned it to him in passing as you looked around the room where you were taking the painting from.
“It's yours.”
You let him hook the necklace around your neck, noticing the way his fingers brushed against your nape longer than it should have.
“Thank you, Kaz,” you muttered, taking his hand with both of yours, pressing it to the side of your face. You leaned into the leather, closing your eyes.
Tumblr media
The next time it was more noticable, a bright ruby ring, occupying your pointer finger. It was a small band, but the red stood out extremely against the silver. Your last job was at a pawn shop that belonged to a swindler that you were paid to intimidate into returning the money they had scammed out of your client. As part of it, you were to conduct a robbery of sorts. You were allowed to keep your loot on top of your payment. It was an easy deal to take.
You arrived at the shop just a bell past midnight. Jesper had already snatched a couple of vintage cufflinks for himself. Inej didn't mind swiping a knife or two from the extensive collection. Wylan was fixated on a small, bronze clock. Matthias was shifting through fur jackets being hanged by the door.
Nina gasped when she opened the box of jewelry. It was filled with various stones on different ring bands. There was a mix of earrings, necklaces and bracelets, too, but everyone was eyeing the ruby. It was practically shining.
“That is stunning,” said Jesper, already moving to grab it from Nina's grasp.
Before Jesper could take it, Kaz's gloved fingers closed over it. He tucked it into the pocket of his vest. “That is mine.”
Everyone let out a noise of disagreement, but relented anyway. However, it created quite the scandal when you headed down for breakfast and the ring was adorning your ring finger.
Wylan was the first to notice the bright red stone. His jaw dropped, trailing after the clueless you, who was almost on auto-pilot as you buttered a piece of bread and bit into it.
Wylan tugged on Jesper's hand, pointing at your finger. Jesper let out a conspiratory gasp, which alerted Nina and Matthias. Inej, who was blowing on her cup of tea, looked up as well. Kaz was nowhere to be seen yet.
“Morning, everyone,” you mumbled, rubbing the sleep off of your eyes. You were taken aback by everyone's bewildered reaction. “Are you okay? Is there something wrong with me?”
Self-consciously, you started smoothing out your hair and tugged on the collar of your shirt.
“Oh, you're fine,” Jesper said. “We just can't help but be curious of the ring.”
In your sleepy haze, you shrugged. “A gift from Kaz.”
As if on cue, Kaz walked down the stairs. Everyone's gaze turned on him simultaneously.
“He gifted it to you?” Asked Matthias, tilting his head inquisitively.
Kaz, with his usual scowl, asked back, “What are you all on about?”
“Everything made sense!” yelled Nina. “Matthias, I told you about the changes in Kaz's heartrate—”
“—or the way he sometimes disappears—” said Wylan.
Jesper chided in, “—and he's never cared for jewelry before, but lately he's been taking souvenirs back—”
“—and he's been giving them to ___,” concluded Inej.
“Well done,” said Kaz uninterestedly. “Astute observations.”
He brushed past you, taking a bite out of your buttered bread as he did. “Good morning.”
It was safe to say that the rest of the day was filled with inquiries by everyone else. Kaz wanted no part in it, leaving you to deal with the barrage of questions from how and when and all the sorts. You swore you'd have a couple of words for Kaz by the end of the day.

i want to talk more about the fact that kaz learned most of his tricks from street magicians and traveling performers. i want to discuss kaz brekker and his ceaseless little magic tricks. he's literally a party magician but he's so fucking serious about it. he bests the darkling with a magic trick. he tries to convince inej that alina isn't that great or impressive by making a fucking quarter appear. saints? not real. not cool. you know what is cool? this quarter. why are you walking away
at the PEAK of his revenge scheme, when he's finally getting what he wants, when pekka is on his knees, think about what fucking kaz does. another silly little magic trick. he's standing there, covered in blood and sweat, hat gone. hat in the wind. hat RIP in pieces. hatless. and he's like like ah, yes. time for my incredibly good appearing pen trick. you may remember this from my flashback two episodes ago

• Touch and Kaz Brekker •
Tumblr media
You knew what you signed up for when you fell in love with the bastard of the barrel. Touch was never going to come easy.
There are times where the mere thought of touch causes bile to rise up in Kaz's throat and makes him recede into himself. Turning into no more than a phantom to you, haunted by his past.
And then there are times where Kaz takes to touch with a curiosity that can only come from a boy in love. Where he yearns to experience the intimacies that come when two people are joined.
Such as when a breeze travels through one of the Slat's windows and inadvertently causes strands of hair to fall onto your forehead.
Kaz is caught off guard, wishing more than anything that he could tuck those stray strands behind your ear.
Or when he notices you dressed for the evening, perhaps in a dress. Your bare shoulders glinting in the candlelight.
Kaz practically aches to kiss your aflame skin.
Such as one eases into a tub filled with steaming water, it took caution and time to get Dirtyhands used to the concept of touch. To realize his fantasies could slowly but surely become a reality with you and you alone.
First, it started with you wearing one of his own gloves. The fabric like a second skin to him by now. So, when your gloved hand made contact with his chest, to feel his heartbeat, it was bearable.
You were more than happy to go at his speed, to cherish any crumbs of intimacy he was able to maintain.
And with his own gloves you could touch parts of his body.
But eventually Kaz wanted more. Needed more.
So, one day the gloves came off.
You had never seen Kaz's bare hands so clearly before. Pale and thin. Magician's fingers. And they were cold to the touch when he placed his hand in yours.
The skin to skin contact was enough to make Kaz feel the dark waters at his feet, ready to pull him under but he fought it. He fought it for you and because honestly, his desire was greater than his fear.
He held your hands with reverence, memorizing every line upon your palms until he worked his way upwards.
His fingers, light as air, ghosting over your collarbones, your jaw, the cupid's bow of your lips...
Oh, Kaz wanted to drown but he also wanted to continue, to push himself. He concentrated on how warm your skin felt.
Not cold or clammy like the bloated corpses he remembered. You were soft, your heartbeat thumping beneath his fingertips. So alive.
Kaz vowed to himself that he would get better for you. Brick by brick. So one day he could give you more than puny crumbs.
He wanted to kiss you. To feel you more than just a few measly caresses.
He would become a man for you. Not just a boy plagued by trauma. Hell, eventually Kaz would love nothing more than to pick you up in his arms and sweep you off your feet.
But, baby steps. One day at a time. Healing required patience and you had ample enough to give.
Though the first time Kaz pulled you in for a kiss you felt like your heart might stop.
The brush of his lips against yours gentle yet dripping with years of constrained passion.
The tide lapped at Kaz's feet, of course, yet the pull of you was a light amidst the dark sea in his mind.
Kaz thought, if he should die at this moment, he would die happy.
Your mouth against his burned him in the most blissful way and he knew he was instantly addicted.
He would fight any nightmare, he would wade against the coldest of water, if it meant one more kiss, one more touch from you.
And Kaz was nothing if not persistent in getting what he wanted.
So, he would conquer his fears for you. His love.

Skillful deception
Tumblr media
Summary: Y/n and Kaz bond over magic tricks.
Warnings: I’d say ooc but we all know kaz is a nerd when it comes to magic tricks. Also, I explained how two sleight of hand tricks work. The pen vanish, which Kaz performs during season two of Shadow and bone (pic above) and, raise rise, a famous sleight of hand trick. So if you don’t want to know how those two work, I recommended skipping this fic.
Note: If you wanna learn any of the tricks, the vanishing pen trick is easy and there’s a lot of tutorials out there. It only requires practice and angles. For Raise rise, the creator is selling the “tutorial”. It’s not very expensive, and in my opinion it’s worth it and a really good party trick.
As the sound of shuffling cards filled the dimly lit room, Kaz Brekker sat across from y/n, his eyes trained on her hands with a curious glint. He had always admired her dexterity, but little did he know that her skill went beyond mere nimbleness of fingers. Y/n had kept her abilities as a magician hidden from the entire crew of the Dregs, including the infamous Kaz Brekker.
"What trick are you going to show me today, Kaz?" y/n asked, her voice tinged with playful anticipation.
Kaz smirked, a mischievous glimmer dancing in his eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a pen, holding it up for y/n to see. "Today, I'll teach you a little trick I learned when I was younger. It's a classic, really."
He demonstrated, swiftly flicking his wrists, causing the pen to disappear. With a sly smile, he slowly opened his hand, revealing an empty palm. "See? The pen vanishes right before your eyes."
Y/n chuckled softly, her fingers tracing an invisible pattern on the cards on the table. "Ah, yes. I remember when I first learned that trick. Although, I’ll admit, I couldn’t quite get the pen to flick back correctly for a while. I kept using to much strength and the pen kept flying off."
Kaz raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued. "Is that so? I've never heard you mention your interest in magic before."
She shrugged casually. "Well, I suppose everyone has their secrets, don't they? But since we're sharing tricks, how about I show you one I've perfected?"
Intrigued, Kaz leaned back, giving her the stage. Y/n picked up the deck of cards she was previously playing with and shuffled them in a skilled and professional manner, the movements fluid and precise. Once satisfied with the shuffle, she held the deck in her hand and took the card from the top, showing it to Kaz.
"Well, that's not a very good trick," Kaz commented, feigning disappointment.
Y/n chuckled, her laughter filling the room. As she laughed, she carefully placed the card in the middle of the deck, allowing a portion of it to stick out just enough for Kaz to see its position. She then proceeded to make a cut between the card sticking out and the bottom of the deck, so the card sticking out could be at the bottom and not the middle.
Undeterred, y/n began flicking her wrist upward, each motion causing the card to move incrementally higher within the deck. Kaz's eyes widened as he observed the impossible, the card rising through the deck as if defying gravity. Y/n's fingers danced with practiced precision, the card inching its way to the top.
With a triumphant smile, y/n revealed the top of the deck, showcasing the returned card. "Ta-da! The card has returned to its original place."
Kaz stared in awe, his skepticism replaced with fascination. "How did you do that?" he asked, his voice filled with wonder.
A coy smile played on y/n's lips as she uttered the words Kaz himself often used. "A good magician..." y/n started "...never reveals their secrets," Kaz finished, his admiration for her talent growing with each passing moment.
Y/n continued to amaze Kaz, showcasing an array of tricks with cards, coins, and even small objects she made disappear and reappear at will. Each time, Kaz marveled at her finesse, the way she effortlessly deceived the eye and brought wonder into the room.
As the evening wore on, y/n and Kaz shared their hidden magic tricks, delighting in the joy they found in these illusions. The bond between them deepened, their shared secrets and the enchantment of their tricks creating a connection unlike any other.
“You really want to know how the Raise Rise trick works, Brekker?” Y/n waited for a couple second for Kaz to either deny or accept the offer. After a quick nod from the man himself, she held the deck in her hand and began to explain the Raise Rise trick.
“Ok then, this is how the trick works,” y/n began, her voice filled with excitement. “First, I’ll show you the top card, just like before. After showing it to you, I’ll place it in the middle of the deck, sticking out slightly, so we can keep track of its position.”
Kaz nodded, his eyes fixed on y/n’s every move.
“Next, watch closely,” y/n continued. “As I perform a cut, I’ll be carefully switching the position of the card sticking out with the one below it. This allows the original selected card to move back to the top of the deck while the switched card is now the one sticking out.”
With a swift motion, y/n performed the cut, executing the subtle switch seamlessly but slowly so he could see what she was talking about. Kaz’s eyes focused intently, trying to catch any hint of the sleight of hand.
“Now, every time I flick my wrist, my thumb pushes out a new card to stick out, while my index finger makes the previous card go back in,” y/n explained. “The key is to execute these movements quickly and smoothly, ensuring that the switch is imperceptible to the audience’s eyes.”
With practiced finesse, y/n flicked her wrist, causing the card to rise slightly. She repeated the motion, each flick elevating the card higher within the deck. The illusion of the card defying gravity took hold, captivating Kaz’s attention.
“You see, Kaz,” y/n said, her voice filled with satisfaction. “By swiftly alternating the movement of the cards, I can create the illusion of the selected card rising through the deck until it reaches the top again, even though it has been there for some time now.”
Kaz’s awe and admiration were evident on his face as he watched the mesmerizing display.
“Now it’s your turn, Kaz,” y/n said, handing him the deck. “Give it a try.”
Kaz accepted the deck, feeling a mix of excitement and determination. He observed y/n’s graceful movements, committing them to memory. Holding the deck in his hands, he prepared himself to execute the trick.
With a flick of his wrist, Kaz revealed the top card to y/n, mirroring her earlier demonstration. However, as he attempted the cut, his gloved fingers fumbled, causing the cards to slip from his grasp and scatter across the table.
Undeterred, Kaz let out a frustrated grunt and gathered the scattered cards, determined to try again. He meticulously reshuffled the deck, his focus unwavering. Once more, he lifted the top card to show y/n and attempted the cut. But once again, his fingers failed to execute the maneuver with the necessary finesse.
A sense of disappointment gnawed at Kaz as he made several more attempts, each one resulting in failure. The smooth flow of the trick eluded him, and he let out a long sigh of frustration, finally giving up.
Y/n reached out and slightly placed a comforting hand on Kaz’s gloved one, her voice filled with empathy. “It’s alright, Kaz. The cut can be challenging, even for the most skilled magicians. It takes time and practice. Don’t be too hard on yourself.”
After that night, Kaz spent weeks practicing tirelessly. He analyzed every failed attempt, dissecting the intricacies of his movements and making subtle adjustments. The deck became an extension of his being as he honed his skill, his gloved fingers growing increasingly deft.
One night, as the moon cast a silvery glow upon the city, Kaz burst into y/n’s room, his expression a mix of exhilaration and triumph. “Y/n, I’ve done it! I can finally perform the trick!”
Y/n’s eyes widened with anticipation, a smile playing at the corners of her lips. “Show me, Kaz.”
With a calm yet purposeful demeanor, Kaz picked up a deck of cards and expertly shuffled them. His gloved hands moved with a newfound grace and precision, a testament to the weeks of relentless practice. The deck seemed an extension of his being as he held it steady.
As he lifted the top card to show y/n, a spark of excitement danced in his eyes. He carefully placed the card in the middle of the deck, executing the cut flawlessly. With a flick of his wrist, he initiated the sequence of movements, each one executed with absolute control.
Card after card rose and fell with seamless fluidity, defying the laws of gravity as if dancing to an otherworldly rhythm. Kaz’s fingers moved with practiced elegance, every flick and shift executed with unyielding precision. And then, in a crescendo of astonishment, the selected card resurfaced at the top of the deck.
Y/n applauded, her voice filled with genuine admiration. “Kaz, you’ve done it! You’ve mastered the Raise Rise trick!”
A sense of accomplishment washed over Kaz as he met y/n’s gaze, his usually stoic expression softened by a proud smile. “Have you got any other incredibly hard tricks for me to learn, y/n?”
As y/n took the cards from his gloved hand, she said “this is called Ascanio Spread”

Cunk on Ketterdam
Prompt: I have a generous request to all of the great fanfiction writers that please for the love of God can you write something like all the Crows are getting interviewed in Cunk on Earth 😭 . I would love to see them being flabbergasted by the questions of Philomena. It can also be Crows x Reader, where the reader takes the place of Philomena.
A/n: I tried my best. Will prolly make it a series since it’s such an interesting concept. Lmk which character you want next. I have more for Kaz Brekker also. 😭
Word Count: 497 words
Tumblr media
Y/n: Welcome on the Ketterdam TV, Mr. Brekker. I have been informed to remind you from time to time that not giving us an answer would result in deduction of kruge from your share.
Kaz: I understand.
Y/n: Now let’s start from the basics, the first question is, how many birthday party performances do you have on your resume?
Kaz: For what reason would I go to a tiny terrors’ tumultuous tribute?
Y/n: No, it says here (checking your script) that you are a magician. So I assumed that you’d work at parties.
Kaz: I’m not a magician.
Y/n: Very well then, next question, would you audition for the play of Now You See Me 3? I heard they need a magician. Although you would have to do something other than card tricks. A character in the 2nd play has already accomplished that.
Kaz: Is this a joke? I'll leave that to the performers with less refined tastes.
Y/n: You have a bit of an emo vibe don’t you. You’d fit right into the band My Chemical Romance. Now, I have to ask, do you think your name would be better if it was spelled with a 'z' instead of a 'k'? You know, like "Kaz the Kool Kid" or "Zaz the Zany Zebra"?
Kaz: (looking around at the exits so soon) I’d prefer if you would stick to Mr. Brekker.
Y/n: Party pooper. Okay, moving on. I've heard you're a great leader of the Dregs, but have you ever thought about starting a band? I hear kazoo music is making a comeback.
Kaz: I’m quite satisfied with my current employment.
Y/n: Does your mother agree with your profession?
Kaz: 👁️👄👁️
Y/n: And that’s what I thought. That’s why I was suggesting alternatives. I want to know where you stand on diversity. Considering your employees are all diverse.
Kaz: I pick my crows based on their work, and not those extraneous factors.
Y/n: Is that why all of you have one thing in common?
Kaz: Yes, all of us are-
Y/n: - (cutting him off) in dire need of therapy.
Kaz: No, we don’-
Y/n: Producers told me you might be in denial. Moving on, when are you going to change the last name of your adopted child?
Kaz: I don’t have a child.
Y/n: My saints the denial phase is worse than I had thought. Although I’ll tell you, I was talking about your son, Wylan Van Eck. Is he not your child? And answer carefully, he might cry if you deny again.
Kaz: (not saying no but not saying yes either)
Y/n: I’ll take that as a “as soon as possible”. Now, at last, the most simple question. Do you keep saying “Hello Inej” every five minutes?
Kaz: No. I do not. That is absurd.
Y/n: (to the producers) I think you should offer him free therapy sessions, he desperately needs them.

Y/N made a sound of disgust, her contempt for the Fjerdan clear, and the Zemeni man next to the inferni stopped fidgeting, his mouth falling slightly ajar. Kaz, however, didn’t seem surprised. If anything, he looked pleased.
“I can give you something better,” said Kaz.
Doubt and suspicion swam in Matthias’ eyes. “There is nothing else I want.”
“I can make you druskelle again.”
“Are you a magician, then? A wej sprite who grants wishes? I’m superstitious, not stupid.”
“You can be both, you know, but that’s hardly the point.” Kaz slipped a gloved hand into his dark coat. “Here,” he said. And gave a piece of paper to the inferni. She brought the paper up to his face for him to read. The document was written in Kerch and Fjerdan. Matthias’ eyes scanned over the paper that had statements of a release due in his favor. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion, “What evidence?”
Kaz leaned back in his chair. “It seems Nina Zenik has recanted her statements. She will face charges of perjury.”
“Perjury? How long will you serve for that, Zenik?”
“Two months,” she said quietly.
“Two months?” Matthias laughed cruelly, his body twitching as if he’d been poisoned.
The others watched him with some concern.
“Just how crazy is he?” Jesper asked, fingers drumming on the pearl handles of his precious revolvers.
Y/N shrugged. “He’s not what I’d call reliable, but he’s all we’ve got apparently.”
Once Matthias got over his laughing fit he cleared his throat. “She can’t be trusted, you know,” he said to Kaz. “Whatever secrets you hope to gain from Bo Yul-Bayur, she’ll turn them over to Ravka.”
Y/N clenched her fists, but before she could say anything Kaz jumped to the defence. “Let me worry about that, Helvar. You do your part, and the secrets of Yul-Bayur and jurda parem will be in the hands of the people best equipped to make sure they stay rumors.”
Y/N eyed Kaz cautiously as she wondered who he planned on handing the drug and chemist over to. There are things that he has kept in the dark and she knew it would come to sneak up on them later if he didn’t bring it to light.
After a bit more of going back and forth Matthias finally agreed to Kaz’s terms.
“We’re going to untie you,” said Kaz. “I hope prison hasn’t robbed you of all your manners or good sense.”
Matthias nodded and Y/N pulled out a knife to cut him free of the ropes that binded him. “I believe you know Nina,” Kaz continued. “The lovely girl freeing you is Y/N L/N, our own personal Ravkan soldier and the best in the trade. Jesper Fahey is our sharpshooter, Zemeni-born but try not to hold it against him, and this is Wylan, the best demolitions expert in the Barrel.”
A rag tag group who had taken the world by storm while they helped save it from the darkest of shadows. Now challenged to take on the biggest heist of their lives. None of them entirely prepared for what came next but they all had their motives. Righteous and good-willed or greedy and selfish, they all had one goal and they hoped it’d be strong enough to hold them together.
“Besides, Wylan isn’t just good with the flint and fuss. He’s our insurance.” Kaz spoke while avoiding eye contact with Y/N.
“Against what?” Nina asked.
“Meet Wylan Van Eck,” said Kaz Brekker as the boy’s cheeks flooded crimson. “Jan Van Eck’s son and our guarantee on four million kruge.”
Jesper stared at Wylan. “You’re a Councilman’s kid? I mean that explains everything… Why didn’t you tell me?” His eyes had grown soft and filled with hurt.
Wylan was red-faced and mortified. Nina looked stunned and irritated. The Fjerdan just seemed confused. Kaz appeared utterly pleased with himself. Y/N glared hard at the side of Dirtyhand’s face.
Wylan’s mouth opened and closed, his throat working. “You knew?” he asked Kaz miserably.
Kaz leaned back in his chair, one knee bent, his bad leg stretched out before him. “Why do you think I’ve been keeping you around?”
“I’m good at demo.”
“You’re passable at demo. You’re excellent at hostage.”
That was cruel, but that was Kaz. And the Barrel was a far rougher teacher than Kaz could ever be. At least this explained why Kaz had been coddling Wylan and brought him on an insanely important job.
The plan in Y/N’s head tilted sideways. Wylan was a hostage. Van Eck was paying Kaz for this heist. He lied to her. Not directly, but he withheld the information.
The bastard continued to make his point of Wylan not really being fit for this line of work. Jesper sat silently with a dazed look in his eyes while Wylan looked like a kicked puppy. Y/N felt uneasy about the whole situation.
“Since Wylan has seen the Ice Court with his very own eyes,” Kaz spoke, “he can keep you honest, Helvar.”
The Fjerdan scowled furiously, and Wylan looked a little ill.
“Don’t worry,” Nina said. “The glower isn’t lethal.”
Kaz tapped his cane on the polished wood floor. “Take out your pen and proper paper, Wylan. Let’s put Helvar to work.”
Wylan reached into the satchel that sat between the sharpshooter and himself. He pulled out a slender roll of butcher’s paper followed by a metal case that held an expensive-looking pen and ink set.
“Start talking,” Kaz said to the Fjerdan. “It’s time to pay the rent.”
Matthias directed his furious gaze at Kaz. Definitely a mighty glower. It was almost fun to watch him pit it against Kaz’s sharklike stare.
Finally, the Fjerdan shut his eyes, took a deep breath, and said, “The concentric circles, like the rings of a tree.” The words came slowly, as if speaking each one was causing him pain.
The merchling and Fjerdan went back and forth on describing the Ice Court, each one fact checking and correcting the other. They explained each level of defence and the coordinating colored protical. Where the prison cells were and where they’d most likely find Bo Yul-Bayur.
“Hringkalla is coming up,” Nina said suddenly.
“Be silent,” Matthias snapped.
“Pray, don’t,” said Kaz.
“Hringkalla. It’s the Day of Listening, when the new druskelle are initiated on the White Island.” Y/N spoke up.
Matthias’ knuckles flexed white. “You have no right to speak of those things. They’re holy.”
“They’re facts. The Fjerdan royals throw a huge party with guests from all over the world, and plenty of the entertainment comesstraight from Ketterdam.”
“Entertainment?” Kaz asked.
“Actors, dancers, a Komedie Brute troupe, and the best talent from the pleasure houses of West Stave.”
“I thought Fjerdans didn’t go in for that sort of thing,” said Jesper.
Nina’s lips quirked. “You’ve never seen Fjerdan soldiers on the Staves?”
“I meant when they’re at home,” Jesper said.
“It’s the one day a year they all stop acting so miserable and actually let themselves have a good time,” Nina replied. “Besides, “only the druskelle live like monks.”
Matthias and the heartrender kept going back and forth, each picking and poking with their words, trying to get a reaction out of each other. Y/N rolled her eyes at the pair in both annoyance and a teasing manner.
“When does this party take place?” Kaz interrupted.
“It’s seasonal,” Nina said, “on the spring equinox.”
“Two weeks from today.” noted Y/N.
Kaz cocked his head to one side, his eyes focused on something in the distance.
“Scheming face,” Jesper whispered to Y/N.
She nodded. “Definitely.”
Kaz inquired about the White Rose sending any delegations. Nina replied, saying she didn’t know anything.
Kaz leaned back. “What’s the easiest way to steal a man’s wallet?”
“Knife to the throat?” Y/N asked.
“Gun to the back?” said Jesper.
“Poison in his cup?” suggested Nina.
“You’re all horrible,” said Matthias.
Kaz rolled his eyes. “The easiest way to steal a man’s wallet is to tell him you’re going to steal his watch. You take his attention and direct it to where you want it to go.” He continued to explain how Hringkalla will do the job for them. They’ll take advantage of the chaos that is hosting such a large gathering of people. “They can’t be looking everywhere at once.” He started to construct his plan of them sneaking into the prison as criminals.
“Let me get this straight,” said Jesper. “You want us to let the Fjerdans lock us up in jail. Isn’t that what we’re always trying to avoid?”
“Criminal identities are slippery. It’s one of the perks of being a member of the troublemaking class. They’ll be counting heads at the prison gate, looking at names and crimes, not checking passports or examining embassy seals.”
“Because no one wants to go to pricon,” Jesper said.
Nina rubbed her hands over her wrists, “I don’t want to be locked up in a Fjerdan cell.” Y/N nodded her agreement.
Kaz flicked his sleeve, and two slender rods of metal appeared between his fingers. They danced over his knuckles then vanished once more.
“Lockpicks?” Y/N asked.
“You let me take care of the cells,” said Kaz.
“Hit where the mark isn’t looking,” mused the inferni.
“That’s right,” nodded Kaz. “And the Ice Court is like any other mark, one big white pigeon ready for the plucking.”
Anticipation mixed with fear and excitement settled in the room as Y/N looked around at the other crows.
Matthias folded his huge arms and said, “You have no idea what you’re up against.”
“But you do, Helvar. I want you working on the plan of the Ice Court every minute until we sail. Mo detail is too small or inconsequential. I’ll be checking on you regularly.”
Y/N traced her fingers over the rough sketch Wylan drew out. “It really does look like the rings of a tree.”
“No,” said Kaz. “It looks like a target.”

Tumblr media
A week.
That was how long it past since you left the orphanage.
Two days after you ran away, you heard the news that the entire house was completely empty from people.
No one was found yet.
You didn't hear anything again about the house after.
"You seem lost, sweetheart." Your thoughts were cut off when you looked to the left side of you while walking through the market. A woman in her middle age was standing behind her stand, watching you with a small sad smile.
"Oh, uh," you stuttered. You shrugged a little, "I guess you can say that." You looked at her table and looked at the jewellery on them.
"Where are your parents?" she asked as she looked around you.
Don't know. "I'm seventeen, I can go around without them," you said.
"I'm sure you can," she said. She was silent for a moment as she studied you while you were looking at the items. She stepped over and you looked at her when she spoke, "You're far away from your home. Aren't you?"
"Excuse me?" you asked softly.
"Very far, yet close," she muttered, her gaze not breaking from you. She blinked and crossed her arms over her chest, clearing her throat. "When was the last time you ate?"
You glanced down at yourself, and then you looked at her with hesitation, "Last night," you answered.
She nodded slowly, and looked over your shoulder at the stand food before looking at you. "Wait here." She walked around her stand and walked past you. You turned to watch her, a little confused.
"Hey, Simon!" she said to the man behind the food stand. You watched them speaking but couldn't hear what they were saying. The man, Simon tilted his head and glanced at you before at the woman. She told him something and you could hear, "Come on, have a heart."
He said something as he placed food on the plastic plate and handed it to her, "But you owe me a reading."
"Done," she said with a smile and walked back to you and her stand. She handed you the plate, "Here."
You looked from the plate to her in confusion, "I... thanks. But, why?"
The kind woman shrugged, "I can help, so why not?" She nodded to the chairs. "Come on, sit." She walked to the chairs and sat on one. You hesitated but a few seconds after you stepped closer and sat down on the second chair, placing your bag down next to you.
"What did he mean by you giving him a reading?" you asked with a small frown.
The woman smiled a little, "I do tarot cards reading, and other stuff."
You raised an eyebrow, "Witchcraft?" you asked with amusement.
She laughed and tilted her head, "A little like that."
Your amusement disappeared and you tilted your head, "Wait, really? You kidding, right?"
She didn't answer and just smirked softly. "Would you like me to show you something with the tarot cards?"
~~~~~
"Pick six cards."
The woman, who introduced herself as Evelyn, had brought you to her small house to spend the night there in her living room instead outside in the rain, she had settled down the tarot cards on her kitchen table.
You picked six cards and she moved the rest away. She placed the six cards you picked up beside each other, and you couldn't stop staring at one of the cards.
"Okay," she started and flipped one.
Judgement
"Judgement," she read and looked at you, "Someone's calling for you." You froze as you thought about what happened a week ago.
Kiera. You've survived. Find me.
Evelyn lifted her hand on top of the card, closing her eyes for a moment before reopening them, frowning a little, "Someone wants you to raise up, to embrace your power."
Embrace your power... "How... it's--" you said and cut yourself off.
Evelyn flipped the second card.
The Magician
She lifted her hand on top of the card like the first one. "You can't control your shadows..." You looked from the card to her in shock. "They're here to serve you... yet, you don't know how to use them."
She flipped the third card.
Strength
Evelyn lifted her hand on top of the card, "You need to find your courage. Don't let fear control you. Your strength gives you the confidence to overcome any growing fears, challenges or doubts."
She flipped the fourth card.
The Wheel Of Fortune
Evelyn placed her hand again on the card, letting out a soft sigh of relief. "Your destiny approaching... something new will appear to you." She frowned and looked from the card to you. "Something good, yet there will be something bad." She looked at the fifth card that you stared and lifted her hand on it for a second. "Something. Evil."
She flipped the card.
The Devil
You straighten up and tensed. The lights flicked for a few seconds before stopping. You and Evelyn looked at the ceiling before back at the card.
"Be aware," Evelyn said in a tight voice, and you lifted your gaze to her, and she was now staring at you. "From the evil man." You froze at her unfocused stare. "Without him, you are safe. Together... you will became the Darkness. Find the rift to go home, Kiera."
You stood up in a startle, making Evelyn focus on you again. She seemed surprised, as if she didn't knew she saw that name. "I--I have to go," you said quickly and immediately grabbed your bag, "Thank you for everything, I, uh, I will find a way to repay you for the food and--and the hospitality."
"Oh, but--" she stopped herself as she got up, but you quickly left the house, without knowing what was the sixth card was.
Death
~~~~~
You moved quickly on the sidewalk, breathing heavily as you held tightly into your bag, glancing nervously behind you every now and then.
You let out a shaky breath as you continued down the road, not noticing on the other side a few guys talking when they spotted you walking alone.
"Hey, gorgeous!" one of them called to you, and you glanced over to them in confusion. "Where you going in a rash?"
You rolled your eyes and ignored them as you continued on your way. You could hear them starting to follow you, and you swallowed nervously.
You slowed down as you spotted shadows on the ground, passing to the alleyway.
You stared for a second before walking around the corner to the alleyway.
Find the rift, you heard a whisper in your head.
You looked around the alleyway as you approached farther inside. You saw the shadows approaching to a crack on the wall, disappearing inside the dark line.
"Hey baby, where you going?" you snapped out from your gaze and turned to see the boys walking toward you, smocking and two guys were holding bottles in their hands. They looked like maybe one year older than you.
"Fuck off," you said with a calm voice, showing no fear now without realizing.
The boy in the front chuckled. "That's not nice," he said.
You stared at them blankly as the walls around you started to get darker.
"Leave, or else," you warned calmly.
"See, now why will we do that if we can have a company of a pretty face like yours?" the boy in the front asked as he stepped closer to you with a smirk.
Growling
His smirk disappeared as he immediately stopped when you all heard the growling noise. You looked over your shoulder with a confused frown.
In the darkness, you all saw red bright eyes staring at you and the boys. In the fog from the darkness, it slowly walked out.
It was a dark wolf, but a bit bigger than a normal one. You stared in amazement at its red glowing eyes.
"Holy shit," the boy muttered in disbelief as the wolf approached closer. It growled and showed its sharp teeth as it glared at the boys.
It barked.
The guys took off running away, and when they were gone, the wolf stopped. It turned to you and lifted its head up to stare at you. You could see the fog dropping from its fur and for a second there you thought it wasn't truly a wolf.
Until it walked back to you and brushed its fur against your hand before it walked past you to the darkness. You turned to watch it, and it stopped to look over at you as if waiting for you to follow.
You did.
You took a step forward and another into the darkness. The wolf disappeared, but you looked to the crack. You lifted your hand and touched the crack.
Find me.
You suddenly heard the same voice in your mind. The same male.
Who am I?
Who are you?
Dark lines moved up from your hand where your fingers touching the crack, and as you felt the darkness pulling at you, you closed your eyes.
