Sorry if this is asking for something too specific, but is there any high fantasy-themed, setting agnostic ttrpg system that I can, like, fit into the mold of a homebrew DnD campaign? I really don't want to drop this campaign that I've been running for years and have written tens of thousands of words for, but at this point the 5e system just isn't cutting it for me due to all the Problems Issues it has. Making fun encounters and areas to explore feels more and more impossible each day and it feels like I'm fighting against the current whenever I want to focus more on worldbuilding and character interaction or do something more abstract like sending PCs to the dream realm or whatever. Is there any less crunchy and combat-focused alternative thatd still let my players be clerics, barbarians, bards, etc or some equivalent?

i don't really believe in 'setting agnostic'. i think every RPG has to include some kind of implication about the setting in the basic functionalities of what verbs the characters can do. like, by including combat in an RPG, it's no longer 'setting agnostic', because some pretty big implications have been made about what kind of world these characers are going to exist in. but i digress! i know what you mean lol -- you want a high fantasy game that can be molded to the world you've already created.

fellowship is a pretty simple, classic high fantasy -- as you can imagine from the name, it draws heavily from lord of the rings. it doesn't have 'classes', though -- the playbooks are all themed around more general story rolls or fantasy peoples -- so if maintaining that is important to you it might not be for you.

venture is a game i haven't personally played or read but i've seen toted around as a pretty good rules-light game for this kind of setting and atmosphere. it's Belonging Outside Belonging, which means it's diceless and more narrative, with the mechanics hinging around a token economy (take tokens on narrative downbeats, spend them to do cool things). it does have classes.

quest is also a super-simplified take on the d&d formula which keeps d20s and class advancement while ditching more or less everything else. it's also free (at least, the digital edition), so if you're on a limited budget and don't want to put on your big skull and crossbones hat it's a pretty good pick.

whatever you end up playing, i hope you and your friends have fun :)

@nokmietarchive So. Your design was too cool not to. Also Shelldon redesign. He's a computer now. Poor guy. Your sketches were SO exciting, and well, I wasn't sure what the shell would look like fully rendered, but I wanted to give it a go, because It's such a unique concept! It reminded me of how some gamer PC towers have these screens that let you see the inside of the machinery.

Unrelated; I realized I went on a rant past this point, so. Read for more if you're interested in that. Boo-yah.

Okay SO. The way I took it as I was re-drawing it, this particular shell is more focused on its technological abilities, as well as how it doubles as a Super Genius Fix-It Kit, and less of a Battle/Protective Shell. I wasn't really thinking about that when I was doodling the big picture. Btw, sorry if I kind of?? took the idea off your hands?? Brainstorming has no chains of its own,,,but if you're not cool with it, say so. I'll keep my lil' hands to myself. Probably. Maybe. Hopefully. He isn't picky about what he's asked to repair, so people of different standings can call him up. He'll be there. HYPERSOMNIA MARCH DEV LOG : "If you have love in your heart"

Hi! For all of you who follow HYPERSOMNIA, you should already know what the gist is here, but for those of you who are new, or just new to our tumblr, let me fill you in!

For 2024, I am trying to release a dev log about HYPERSOMNIA once a month, may come earlier, may come a little late, but I'm doing this to help give insight on to how the game is going, and to give me motivation to work on the game.

First things first, sorry about the incomplete drawing for this month's log. I've been sitting on this drawing for months and haven't touched it, and I needed a drawing for this months log so I thought "Eh, what the hell."

For this month, things have been a bit up and down, I've been focusing on more smaller stuff in engine this month, and bigger stuff outside of engine. So there's not a lot that's been added but there is new stuff that I'd like to share. :)

I'd like to start with the smaller stuff first, since I feel like most logs I've started with the bigger stuff and kinda run out of steam by the end. So it'll be along the lines of "Small in-engine stuff > Big in-engine stuff > News/closing thoughts".

NOW LET'S GET TO THOSE UPDATES!

Lots of menu work has been done this month, which isn't very exciting sounding but it's nice to be getting this stuff over with.

HYPERSOMNIA has a smaller resolution than RPG Maker MV's default, and the thing about that is a lot of content in menus doesn't scale accordingly, leaving stuff to get cut off and preventing the player from accessing information.

One of the things I've had to do is get the player's HP and HS to appear on the status screen. These usually appear on the main menu of the game, but since I use an alternate menu for screen space, they had to be relocated. (courtesy of SundialShark, I'm not familiar with JS so they've been a super big help with certain things in the game.)

The game's title screen also saw a slight improvement, I found a plugin that replaces the windowed options on the title screen with pictures, making them more customized. The title screen artwork itself will be revised later, as I whipped it up as a placeholder.

Also, do you remember last month's dev log? Specifically, the part of it where I talked about the equip menu in battle? Well shortly after writing that dev log, it was finished!

This works how you'd expect it to, you can equip/unequip eyes and give them to other party members. The only drawback to this is that touchscreen isn't fully supported I've been told, which is fine since this is a game intended for PC. It does work with controller though which is nice.

Speaking of battles, I've been working on special attack animations! I have the main 4's offense animations done.

My personal favourite is Jack's. Everyone else does it all cool but Jack aims like he's holding a gun which is cooler. I'll probably touch up Ross' animation, since it looks kinda weird to me. I think his head might be too small.

Also, would you believe me if I told you that isn't all the battle stuff that was done this month? This is where that "Big in-engine" stuff kicks in.

THE BACKGROUND SYSTEM HAS BEEN IMPROVED! (ALONG WITH ME DESIGNING SOME NEW ENEMIES!)

This took a bit of time to configure, but I replaced the old background system for a new one

(Which was originally set up with my buddy Majimjam of HYADES, awesome game that has a demo out RIGHT NOW!)

With Jengamon's EarthBound Backgrounds plugin, it's been really fun to just toy with it and see what I can make. I would try and run down how this works, but the funny thing is I don't even know how this works. Or, at least in full anyways. I know how to configure it and set up new presets for enemies.

That's pretty much all the in-engine stuff I've done this month, but I'm not out of stuff to talk about yet.

First, I recently wrote a thread on the RPG Maker Forums about HYPERSOMNIA, which you can read here!

Secondly, some of you might've seen this already but I decided to cut FIREBALL from the game's soundtrack fully.

There were a multitude of reasons as to why, but the biggest one is I just don't feel like FIREBALL fits HYPERSOMNIA anymore. The vision has shifted since 2021 and I feel like music for battles could reflect it better, so FIREBALL was scrapped.

The song was uploaded to my personal YouTube channel though, so you can still listen to it here.

Third, THE NEW TRAILER IS ALMOST DONE!

There's still a few things that need to be touched up, but the music and footage is all fully recorded! All that's left to do is throw it in the editor and refine it until it's finished.

I'm very proud of this trailer so far, and I think it'll blow every other trailer I've made out of the water. My goal for this trailer was to improve the editing and I think that's definitely one of the highlights for this trailer.

I'd really like to post a quick sneak peak, but everything about this trailer I feel will be such a surprise that I don't want to spoil it. You'll just have to wait for the Mother Direct!

And that's it for this month! Slow but steady progress is how I'd sum up March. I'm definitely looking forward to the future. Mostly because I'm going to a restaurant with family later today, but next month will have more in store. Like my birthday! Big things coming.

I have two (2) separate recs for thermal paste.

If you are an every day PC user looking to do a standard hardware upgrade and you want something cost effective, easy to use, hard to fuck up, and perfectly sufficient for most gaming, you want Thermal Grizzly's Kryonaut. This is available basically everywhere, including Amazon. It's super popular and for good reason.

It's a non-conductive grease paste. That means it has a thick texture that is unlikely to squish out between your processor and heatsink, and even if it did squish out a bit, it wouldn't cause an electrical short.

But let's say you're on that next level shit. You know want some Fucked Up thermal paste for Pushing Limits, and you're ready to take some risks.

Oh baby.

For that, I have to recommend Cool Labs Liquid Ultra

This is a highly liquid, highly conductible thermal paste. It is NOT safe for all coolers! If you have an aluminum heatsink you MUST NOT USE THIS TYPE OF PASTE. It will destroy your heatsink and possibly your processor.

But if you have 1) a copper heatsink 2) a steady hand 3) a lot of acetone 4) qtips?

Bro liquid metal gets you fucked UP cooling effects. Like 10x the cooling effect of a grease paste.

You must be extremely careful when applying it, however. Because it is liquid and metal, it can squish out from your heatsink and processor, and onto the motherboard or processor pins. If this happens, you may be able to clean it up with immense patience and acetone.... and you also may permanently destroy your computer with an irreparable electrical short.

You HAVE to be CAREFUL.

That said, it's not brain surgery. If you can like... draw a straight line, you've probably got enough dexterity to pull it off.

Some people use masking tape or electrical tape borders around their processors when applying liquid metal as a protective measure; you do then have to clean all the adhesive off with acetone, but it's a nice safety if you're anxious.

Though, tbh, for anyone who isn't like.... IDK, livestreaming 4K games or something, kryonaut is more than sufficient for your purposes.

5. That's a really tough one. While I do follow gaming news, I am not so attentive to actual game releases. Mostly because I have never really played on a 'current' platform. I have been using consoles for gaming most of my life, I played on x360 up to 2017, then I got a ps4, which was/is my most go-to platform till this year. This year was a change for me, because I finally surrendered to pirating at the beginning of the year, and played through a number of awesome low-spec indies that way. Though, I have been very lucky to get a new pc recently, and oh boy is this a big change for me. It's still crazy to think this machine can run something more than pixelart now xD (no disrespect to low-spec games in this house allowed, the more accessible the game the better, weak hardware optimisation my beloved)

I have also found a way to get past the payment blocks and have bought all those games I pirated, that was a big weight off my shoulders) So, uh, yeah. I don't follow releases. I would have said Alan Wake 2 is you asked earlier this year tho, CONTROL had me transform into a Sam Lake devoted follower xD I'll gladly watch a letsplay of it sometime soon, before I catch any spoilers. All the other game series I'm interested in are either on hiatus (Darksiders when), or the latest entry made me lose interest (Horizon 2. I love the world, so I'll follow the series anyway, but the story of the sequel is a mess I didn't like at all, and it doubled down on this new direction too). That was a long and roundabout way of saying I don't really look up to any new games currently, lol.

12. Currently - Lohse from the DOS2. This game has an extensive player character creator, however, you could play as basically one of the companions of the game, with full custom story and questline. And Lohse is a Very special case, as my dear bard woman is currently posessed)

The game has some amazing moments, where it will throw you a persuasion check to 'prevent you from throttling a character because the demon inside you didn't like them' for example. Funnily enough, in this moment in particular, if you succeed on the first check (which is hard to do early-game), if will throw you Another one with other stats to use. And Another. There's three persuasion checks in succession here, which is normally literally impossible to do, unless you mod the game to hell and leave the balance there as I did, and STILL this is the only option the dialogue will leave for you. Lohse becomes uncontrollable after this, and your other party members have to subdue her.

It's incredible, amazing time, 10/10. Other origin characters are great too, but I think this fourth-wall-meddling makes Lohse simply the best origin character to play as.

I also greatly enjoyed playing as Delsin Rowe in Infamous Second Son, I love that game, it's super fun and has great style, plus Delsin is adorable. He's a bit punk, he is witty, he is a geek, an artist and his grafitti-drawing mechanic is adorable.

Also Death from Darksiders 2. His parkour is superb, his abilities are super cool, he has an amazing horse, and he is Literally Death Rider Of The Apocalypse.

First song that comes to mind would be Bound Together, since I mentioned it a lot the last few asks...excluding that one, Subhuman + BTL, and Black Dog for the fun of it, All Is Soft Inside which was featured for a virtual concert of AURORA in Sky: Children of the Light (adorable game, which will hopefully come out sometime on pc, mutuals I would hold your hands in that game so. much.)

20. A really cool boss. Sorry King Cerberus and Vergil, you are cool by definition. The first that comes to mind is the Guardian fight from the Darksiders 2, which is honestly the most badass fight in the series. THAT MUSIC HITS SO HARD. And that finish animation, oh my, pure epic.

26. Realism or stylized? Stylized anytime. Realism is honestly kind of boring, though I admit sometimes seeing your fave very detailed is cool. For example, dmc5 Dante design is my favourite out of them all, because it is finally (kind-of) down-to-earth. The game is about fighting demons and being cool about it, but the story is of human struggle and issues, and the character design finally reflects that. And I do enjoy the Impressive hair physics in Horizon games, but that's it for realism. Stylized is literally better in every possible way: it makes the design more flexible - it can be expressive or constrained, depending on your direction; it is cheaper to produce and easier to optimize and easier to run. Plus 'realism' is a forever-outdated style. Games that were considered 'realistic' in 90s, 00s and 10s don't look so realistic to us now. Even Delsin Rowe I mentioned above - he looks great, the motion capture and animation for the game looks awesome, but his face is kind of baby-smooth and the pupils of every character in the game are just a bit too-wide, it makes them all look like they all collectively had some hallucinogens xD. Meanwhile, stylised games can never go out of style, as they are the ones dictating it. Beyond Good and Evil still looks good, Fables look good, Psychonauts does too, etc. These games always exist in the state they were meant to be viewed in, while realistic games are always reaching for the not-really-but-sort-of unattainable standards, which change with time and available technology.

Stylized is Always. Better. In. Every. Way. Also make games optimized again and lower the hardware reqs. I swear, it's like every new title requires you to buy an entire basement full of rocket-science multi-computers, each with a videocard which name will make the math-lovers cry.

Each post I try to cover just the hair for all of them since that has the most variety with choices and when new topics or subjects come up I cover them. So for this doll? Long or medium fur is an appropriate choice for a doll like this, a little styling and the right choice with cutting on the doll makes end and you’d have a great hair style! For body embroidery for places other then the face, as stated in the past, may cost more but is usually offered by most makers. They have to do the belly button and nipples so of course they can do some extra details. Tattoos are tricky. If it’s to close to any seems then you can’t embroidery it which is why I recommend fabric pens for cases like that. These tattoos are right in the knees so I think it’ll be fine to embroider. Last to post have details on piercings and custom clothes but let me cover necklaces. Bracelet making kits are good for making custom stuff for your little friends. Just buy a thread, ribbon, etc you like for the necklace then find a charm that fits what you want. Or you can make it with clay and over materials. Lots of choices. Of course you can also com someone for one or buy doll stuff online.

Made the tattoo a lighter color since I wanted it to be a bit more subtle with the soft brush I picked. Also!!!! I used a new brush this time. Wanted to try doing softer lines this time and I like it lots! Might make this the norm? Or I’ll try changing it up each time. Need to get back into the habit of using my textured brushes. The eyes came out great. I have an original doll coming out soon (not a product but drawing) and I feel it’s a lot better than my last ones.

lately i've been thinking about this story concept i made when i first started drawing on my pc, in like 2020 !! tho i mainly ever thought about 'glitch', the pink haired girl in these doodles .. its !! shed have come from a dating game, but she'd be a non romanceable character.. little by little she'd break the game apart, forcing herself into scenarios, taking the places of your love interests - not out of romantic love, but because she just really badly wants to be your friend. but the game doesnt want to let her be buddypals with you !! so she takes matters into her own hands.. the game would have ended by it breaking apart after glitch changes too much about it.. the other 3 characters are the love interests (artist, nerd, jock) - alice (blue hair) is the other most thought out character, but also, i only drew her like twice. so. it doesnt count for much. the one w the glasses i only drew once, and the joyous one is new !! i feel like dating game Has to have at least 3 romanceables .. you know .. like if its just 2 Whats the point of even being there !!

Bullshit I'm dealing with in the Percy Jackson fandom: Had no one else to rant about this to. When people ask me dumb questions about me shipping Luke and Percy. Like do you know about their age difference? Do you know that Percy fictional age first starts as 12/13 and Luke's fictional age starts off at 19. It annoys me soooo much that I have to block people and their stupid questions. Yes I do know the age difference of these two fictional characters that could be any age because you know what? Their fictional!

Ok news flash this is a book series based on Greek and Roman mythology. My gay ships having age gaps is the least problematic thing about the series. I am so sick of Fandom purity culture bullshit. It pisses me of too when people pull fictional characters' age in conversations. For God's sake they are FICTIONAL, NOT REAL! None of real world's rules or laws concerns them! How that is so hard for some people to understand? Just enjoy the fandom and let others enjoy it too, all in their own way. There's NO wrong way to enjoy fandom as long as it honestly doesn't harm any living being: No bullying, harassing, sending death threats etc. That not cool and it DOESN'T make you (the bully etc) a better person. Also, you are doing exactly right thing by blocking. That's your right! You have all the rights to block people who come throw shit on you. You have all the rights to block and keep your online experience as pleasant as possible for yourself.

Can I ask what may possibly be a dumb question but why do people do virtual art, like where they do drawings but on an ipad or some kind of thing? Is it less time consuming than drawing on paper? Can you erase mistakes easier than on paper? Also what happens if the ipad/tech drawing thing breaks, do you lose all your work then?

I'll take this as a good faith question and assume you're being genuine. I'm someone who does both digital and traditional art, but generally prefer traditional.

First and foremost, let me clarify one thing: Digital art (virtual is a bit of a weird phrasing, but that might be because English isn't your first language?) is not in any way 'lesser' than traditional. It's still art and it requires pretty much the same types of skill as traditional.

Digital has a whole host of advantages over traditional art. Some being in the process itself and others in the end result.

Digital pieces are easier to reproduce, for example. They are already in a printable format and don't have to be scanned/digitized to be shared. In today's world where so much happens online, that's a huge plus.

Digital is also much more 'approachable' and accessible for a lot of people. Most people have a computer already and a starter drawing tablet is less than 50 bucks, while there's plenty of free drawing programs out there like Krita. Yes, that is a lot more than a pencil and paper, but it is capable of more than the paper and pencil combo and will last you for years.

Digital, as you already figured out, has plenty of advantages over traditional like the ability to infinitely erase (which isn't possible when with a pencil), reshaping/repositioning elements endlessly, having layers and adjustments that can be manipulated individually... The list goes on and on.

Something that might be less obvious when it comes to the advantages of digital especially when we're talking about devices like an iPad or other standalone tablet device (I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+, or example) is that it has a lower barrier for getting started. These devices are easy to have with you, are instant on, can be used handheld or on your lap and as soon as we start going beyond a simple sketch (which in traditional would require just a pencil and paper) it has zero setup time.

If I set up my paints, it requires special paper, my paint palette, my mixing palette, at least one, ideally two cups of water, my brushes... If I want to colour something digitally, I just need my tablet and pen.

Professional art supplies are also expensive and require space to store them (often under specific conditions. Dry, dark, clean, cool), while a tablet or PC has a use beyond art.

Digital has a long, long list of benefits over traditional, all coming down to 'if you mess up, you can fix it a lot easier and you don't have to waste materials on it'. Not everything is perfect with it (for example, it's much easier to learn bad habits on digital, the tactile aspect of traditional media is lost and the ability to infinitely erase and manipulate your pieces can hobble your progress with the mindset of 'eh, I can always fix it later') but generally, it's 'easier' in a lot of ways.

As for your last question: all digital drawing programs have the ability to export workable files like .psd files and it's generally just good digital hygiene to back up your files regularly in at least one or two locations. I recently upgraded my drawing tech (not because something broke, but because I was fortunate enough to get the chance to) and already had all my files in another location.

(My only propaganda on the topic is that I love the idea of not having to think.. Hypnosis and aphrodisiacs and stuff are fun to play with for me especially when subjecting my PCs to things... and the aesthetics of those can be cool to mess with when drawing I think! It’s mainly the hypnosis thing, I think 😭 It’s not a feature I’ve explored much in DOL & the only times I’ve gained hypnosis traits have been a long lasting hindrance that annoy me due to the lack of control 😭

In theory, I love the idea of giving up control & aphrodisiacs can be so fun in that game (the plants, robin landfill scene ((not fun per se but. YK!!)) But Harper and hypnosis in general always seem to come at the most inopportune times </3 I’m real picky when it comes to my PCs, and the situations that they go thru (which is ironic considering the whole game is noncon and the point of it is to put them in unfortunate situations)

BUT if I’m going to get my PC hypnotized, drugged, kidnapped I want it to be on my terms </3. I can relate this to the Kylar kidnapping event for better explanation!!!

I love Kylar. But I have to be in a certain mindset when it happens </3 If they capture me out of the blue while I’m grinding levels or some shit i get so annoyed bc it feels like a waste of my time and it’s not what I’m playing for at the moment. It’s an annoyance that I have to escape from to continue doing what I want to be doing. Same goes for the soft bad ends (Remy’s farm, the asylum, etc) Sometimes I want to be a little mindless cow :3 Getting milked n praised for being the best!!! And then other times they snatch me and i’m like FUCKING LET ME GO IM TRYING TO DO SMTH ELSE oh my god

I certainly could enjoy it, but so far being institutionalized has just been fucking annoying bc it’s prevented me from what I actually want to do😭

I did make a new save recently, one to just fuck around in :) Primarily with the intention to explore Harper content and other stuff I usually avoid in my main saves. I’d be so down to be Harper’s fav little mindless patient, I lovveeee me a problematic, obsessive,, freakish character yk?

Back when degrees of brutality was still up, i loooveed Harper in that mod— Fuxking crazy thing to say especially when I say i don’t like DOL harper but... I LOVEDDD DOB HARPER LFMOSKFNFN. The way you could donate blood to them and each time you came in, they get a little more intrigued by you? Then eventually they ask you to do another test and fucking cut u open play with ur guts and take u home??? oh my godoh my god . The way they fix u up and make Kylar jealous when they’ve cut off your limbs? LJDDJDJFJFB . “Can I have a turn with them?” BYE!!! 🫣🫣
