Don't Be A Drag (Just Be A Queen) (My Babysitter's A Vampire)

Summary: Damien, Jesse's nephew from this generation, is gay, trans, and a drag queen. Of course, he's only known his (scary) uncle for a few weeks, so Jesse has no idea that Damien is on the LGBT spectrum until Damien comes home crying from bullying one day. When asked what happened, Damien explains, and a conversation ensues where Jesse really tries to understand his nephew more and Damien realizes his uncle isn't the bad guy Damien thought he was.

Third Person POV

Damien was Jesse's great-great nephew. He hasn't been around Jesse long enough to know him, so he was still a little shy around Jesse. Honestly, he thought Jesse was a little scary. After the Lucifractor incident, Damien had shown up on Ethan's doorstep, asking for help finding Jesse, and when he was asked why, he said, "My mother sent me. My ancestor was Esther Black." Jesse couldn't believe that Esther had kids. From what he remembered, she'd run from home, not even close to pregnant, a few years before she'd been killed. Apparently, in that time, she'd had a son named Stephen, who'd then fathered a girl named Sofia, who was Damien's mother, having died only three weeks ago. One of her dying requests was that Damien find Jesse.

Jesse was not used to having children (other than Ethan and Benny and Jane) around him. Not that Damien was necessarily a child, but he was human, younger (way younger) than Jesse, so he made the rules. Damien was a child. He kept his distance at first, but Sarah made him see that he couldn't exactly get to know Damien from a distance, so Jesse threw in his lot and made Damien move in with him to avoid further issues. Naturally, they both avoided each other in the mansion or were supremely awkward around each other.

One day, that changed.

Damien came home one day in tears. He pushed through the front door, nearly slamming it. Jesse, on the couch, jumped as Damien stalked past, eyes burning. "Hey, what's--" He began, but Damien stormed past, ignoring him, and slammed himself in his room. For a moment, Jesse was quiet, a little stunned. Then he got up, heading to Damien's door and knocking softly. "Damien?" He asked. "Go away," Damien's voice called. "What's wrong?" Jesse asked, leaning against the door. "Nothing. You wouldn't understand." "Try me." Silence, then.... "Come in."

Jesse walked in, frowning when Damien didn't even look at him. "What's wrong?" He asked, sitting by his hips on the bed. "I don't think you'll understand." Damien said, and Jesse frowned, "Seriously, try me." "Okay." Damien sat up, face red. "I'm gay. And a drag queen." Jesse blinked. "Right, well, um....the gay part I understand, but not the other thing. What's a drag queen?" "Oh, God." Damien blushed, hiding his face. "Okay, so..." He pulled his tablet closer to him, typing in Google. "This. This is Valentina." He said. "She's a drag queen. Like,  a guy who dresses as a woman and acts female for public entertainment." He read off of Google. "And they're usually always gay, like me." Jesse blinked. "So...you wanna be a girl?" "No!" Damien groaned. "I just...wear stuff like Valentina." He nodded at the photo. "Oh," Jesse said. "I mean. Okay?" He asked. Damien stared at him. "Really?" "Are...you waiting for me to yell or something?" Jesse asked. "No, but...that's not weird?" "No, why would it be?" Jesse wondered. "I'm a boy. Wanting to wear...this. And makeup!" Damien nearly shrieked. "I've never judged you before, I don't know why I would now." Jesse rolled his eyes. "Is that what this is about? Did someone say something to you?" Jesse asked quickly. "They said I was--" "That doesn't matter. You wanna be a drag queen, or whatever it's called? Be one." Jesse stated firmly. Damien's eyes watered. "Really?" "Really." Damien smiled, hugging Jesse. "Thank you." Jesse felt that if he had a heart, it would be aching for the boy. "Of course, kid." He whispered, hugging him back.

although seventh grade himself and his family move across town so he starts at a new school that had only ever known him as ethan which is always nice

the first person he meets after he moves is benny weir, the neighbor

it takes ethan a lot longer to figure out he's gay, mainly because of internalized homophobia

he tries Very Hard to understand girls in a romantic sense and fails repeatedly, but from that point to realizing what that meant there was a looong road

he doesnt ever really come out as gay, he just sort of starts dating benny and lets everyone make their own assumptions

it could be said benny came out (the first time) when he was seven and watching the little mermaid and screamed at the top of his lungs that, no, ariel couldn't marry prince eric because he wanted to marry prince eric

not that he'd ever admit to this particular moment ever happening later in life

benny came out (the second time) to his dad and grandma when he was thirteen in a really rushed sentence during dinner

grandma weir, a trans lesbian herself, was totally supportive, as was benny's dad

after that he came out to ethan, who at this point he'd only really known for a but over a year but would probably trust with his life, and to rory who has taken to sticking to them

rory berates him for his lack of usage of puns in his coming out and high fives him, saying theyre bi as well

after that pretty much every single person benny knows just found out through him using a pun in conversation

rory is Proud

he's nonbinary and does not particularly care for which pronouns are used

rory is the kind of person to make everything they own have the coloring of their flag

so he has colored pens and uses exclusively patterns that make out the bi flag, trans flag and enby flag

he lifts up their notebook during class to show anyone he knows and often just gets a "Nice" from benny

they think their mom knows but she does not which makes for quite the situation once she figures it out

she is very awkward at first which is kind of a huge letdown for rory who had up until that point thought she was just completely cool w it and never mentioned it

she does a lot of Intensive Research and eventually looses the awkwardness

she will also beat up anyone who looks at rory funny

sarah!!! she's pretty much in a Lowkey Questioning stage all of highschool

the thing is, looking back at any crushes on guys she's had, theyve always been very Convenient and "this ones dateable I GUESS"

her and ethan have occasional talks about like "oh yeah im totally into [opposite gender] but would Never date them"

they nod at each other like yes yes this is us Heterosexuals

it takes her many many years but she eventually just goes by lesbian as it seems most fitting

erica has been with guys, girls and nb pals but no one knows what label she uses pr if she uses one at all

everyone assumes she just doesnt bc if u ask her she shrugs at you
