The Whumps of March '25 - Mar 1
Cheers, @storyweaverofgondor! You've given me the burst of motivation to share some OCs I've been working on that lean more towards fantasy. Thanks for fostering creativity in our community!
Day 1 - “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
A fellow with amnesia woke inside a treehouse.
He was given a potion for his pain by a pair of women with the same face. Then a witch with a temper came to chew him out, followed by a sprite who kept things from getting out of hand. Then came a man with a crown of horns to match the green wings on his back, and a rabbit with a vocabulary more colorful than the dyes in his pelt.
Put simply: it was a weird day for the fellow with no memories.
Since he couldn’t remember his name, they offered him one: Mahogany. When they found out he didn’t have a place to stay, they offered him that, too.
They made him dinner. They made up a bed for him in an already-cramped room. Mahogany thanked them, shared drinks with them – and then, when all had gone to sleep, Mahogany finally had a moment alone.
He slipped outside the kitchen and onto a balcony. He peered through a sparse section of leaves that revealed a storm coming from the west. The wind was slow, but masses of dark clouds rolled in the distance. It was hard to tell whether the rain would reach them tonight or not.
“The fresh air out here is fantastic, isn’t it?”
Mahogany turned to see his new roommate, several yards away, just outside the kitchen door. “Oh, Whistle,” he said. “Hello.”
As a sprite, Whistle didn’t have a true physical form. Instead, they were made of ethereal silver energy. There had been several moments, early in the day, that Mahogany wondered if Whistle was just a trick of the light. Their visage shimmered like it wasn’t meant to be perceived, and they spoke with something like the echo of a voice.
Although Whistle’s presence was a bit unnerving, the sprite was reasonably friendly. “You’ve got the right idea,” they said. They gestured to the balcony. “May I?” Mahogany nodded, and Whistle glided up beside him.
The pair watched the clouds ride the horizon. Lightning sparked through different gray clumps, and the storm stirred in the breeze, tickling the inside of Mahogany’s ears.
Then, Whistle spoke. “I’m sorry about your memory. I know that’s not much, but I am.” Thunder rumbled through the silence where Mahogany’s reply was supposed to go. Whistle didn’t push it. “How’s the head?” they asked instead.
Mahogany hummed. “Better,” he said. The relentless aching he’d woken up with was fading, and the world didn’t seem so full of fluff anymore. “Rish is pretty good at brewing those potions.”
Whistle chuckled. “She’s had a lot of practice; we’re each a different kind of idiot. You’ll see.”
Mahogany’s eyes drifted up at the leafy canopy. “Thanks, you know. For letting me stay.”
“We’re happy to.” Lightning flashed in the distance. Whistle started drumming their fingers while they waited for the thunder. “If it helps,” they ventured, “there’s actually a few of us here who are, in a way…blank slates.”
Mahogany looked down at hands he didn’t recognize. “Got any advice?”
“Not really. Did you want some?”
“Kind of, yes.”
Whistle stared out at the clouds. They were smiling, but their silvery face was dappled with duller grays. “Well then, how’s this? You can’t change the past, you can’t freeze the present, and you can’t know the future. All you can do is use what you have now, and move forward.”
As far as advice, it wasn’t very comforting. Mahogany curled his fingers over the railing. “I don’t know what I should do,” he said.
“At this hour, maybe sleep?” Whistle suggested. He nodded his head to the treehouse. “Whether you’re spiraling out here or sleeping in there, night will pass and dawn will break. The choice right now is whether or not you’d like some shuteye before morning. Everything else? It’ll come.”
Mahogany breathed in and tasted rain. Closing his eyes, he could hear the distant deluge. Then he turned to his roommate. “Okay. Sleep it is, then.”

We were robbed of potential Nedrick and Leonidas interaction...
Hear me out, I think it would have been hilarious to see if the two of them had a genuine conversation about their goals, because they might be getting amped up and mutually excited that they could be powerful allies only for it all to go down in flames the second they give each other details on their dreams. Because they're so in lockstep with each other about so many of their views, and then they just go an entirely opposite way with them.
Even if I discount Leonidas' initial 'strong eat weak' vs. Nedrick's 'weak rise up' mentality, you still get hilarity all the same.
For example...

i have a long-percolating theory that the thing that people call "puzzles" in video games actually fall into 2 categories, puzzles and what I call riddles. A puzzle is a knowable quantity, an explorable space, a self sustaining ecosystem. A riddle expands outside the space of the game into a space of poetry and external associations, asking you to make connections and experience an authentic epiphany.
I use The Witness as an example, usually, because it has both. The zones that give you screens with all the information on them, the swamp lab, the treehouses, those are puzzles. The zones that ask you to form connections outside of the screens, the apple orchard, the desert temple, the fucking jungle, those are riddles. The dichotomy isn't perfect, like the mountainside flower bunker has elements of both simultaneously, but I think it mostly holds.
Anyways, sometimes I open a box expecting a puzzle game and I get a riddle game instead, and that's why I didn't like Outer Wilds.

─ meaning of pet names w/ lee seokmin 𝜗𝜚 hc's under the cut
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
𓍢ִ໋🌷͙֒ ᰔᩚ sunshine
whether you are a sunshine or not, seriously - you can be the biggest black cat to ever cat, to seokmin you’re still the biggest sunshine there is. he sees you as his personal, little ray of sun because you are the one to light up his gloomy days and you are the one that gives him this fuzzy feeling of warmth and comfort. the pet name feels just so right for you, he loves it so much, truly. he adores how naturally it rolls off his tongue, seokmin genuinely sometimes forgets you have a government name.
„hi, sunshine”
„sunshine, come here” (insert: whiny tone)
„how was your day, sunshine?”
nothing can stop seokmin from viewing you as his sunshine.
𓍢ִ໋🌷͙֒ ᰔᩚ baby
another pet name that makes his heart beat a bit faster whenever he uses it. it's so tender, loving and gentle, and that's exactly what seokmin wants to convey with his words. for some reason, he uses it the most when he's either sleepy or when he's extra whiny, the word "baby" just feels so natural then. besides, you are his baby, so...
if you, for example, take too much time on your night time routine in the bathroom, it's guaranteed that seokmin will whine at some point for you to hurry up, so you can cuddle, and he will use the word "baby" at least ten times.
𓍢ִ໋🌷͙֒ ᰔᩚ your name / any shortened version of your name
to seokmin, your name is the prettiest name to ever exist and as much as he loves using the pet names, your real name is like a pet name in itself. usually, when people say your name, you don't feel much, because, well - it's only your name. but when seokmin says it... he does it with so much love and adoration and it never fails to make you melt on the spot.
another thing he does very often is shortening your name to any kind of nickname he can possibly come up with. sometimes they don't make much sense, but he loves to call you them regardless.
now, we know seokmin can get into a menace-y mood from time to time and that's exactly how he'd tease you - with the made up, cutified nicknames that more often than not drive you crazy.

Do you have any headcanons about what L would be like in a romance? Your vision of Near literally blessed me and I hope you can do L justice, since in the media people see him as not caring about a potential partner and that leaves me disappointed :(
I'm absolutely thrilled and charmed you've liked what I've spun about Near, I'm devastated to admit I don't think I can do L justice to this degree… he's wonderful, but I'm not an L scholar who can write (stops writing this reply to check how much I've written on Near) 10,000~ words worth of ardent meta about him… but I'll talk a bit about him and write out the headcanons I do have.
Tumblr media
Scrutinizing everything Ohba and Obata say about L in all of their interviews, it's clear to me they originally envisioned L as a bit heartless. But all Death Note media since - the anime, the films, the Change the WorLd novel, the J-Drama, the DS games, the musical - all favor an interpretation of L that's more compassionate and human. I have a crackpot theory that fan reception and Alessandro Juliani's (award-winning, I remind you) performance in the English dub influenced this shift, in a similar way to how a couple of Japanese videogames around that time got re-released in Japan with script changes influenced by English localizations (such as Treehouse's localizations for Animal Crossing: Population Growing! and Animal Crossing: Wild World).
Example: in HTR13, Ohba and Obata say that L was lying when he called Light his first friend. No other media since treats this as a lie. Especially in Change the WorLd - L wears Light's watch for the remainder of his life. Also, the novel and film are explicit that L is affected by the horrible things he's witnessed while solving cases and cares about justice for the victims. The novels aren't written by Ohba and Obata, but they did have oversight and endorsed M's work on publication (though perhaps not as passionately as Nisio Isin writing Another Note).
All this to say I think pinning down the "true" L is difficult. I will say that I reject any interpretation of L as callous and uncaring, the same way I reject interpretations of Near as wholly unemotional.
In romance, I think he is basically as he appears in "L the ProLogue to Death Note: Spiraling Trap". He is enigmatic and somewhat difficult to earn the trust of, but he cares deeply about the people in his circle of trust. I don't have a screenshot on hand, but there's a line in the game where he says he'd be disappointed with himself if he ever let (you) get hurt or endangered. This is L. In Death Note's canon, we see similar things with the Japanese Task Force (recall how genuinely upset he is when Ukita dies).
Anyway, my honest thoughts on L romance, based on on a combination of the manga, anime and the DS game where the player can court him.
Earth-shatteringly good kisser, even though he's definitely never kissed anyone before. He's been orally fixated his whole life, he has S-tier instincts and rather lacks shame. Obviously, he's immaculate at oral sex as well. Just another thing in his long list of Mary Sue traits: genius savant, internationally recognized super detective, skilled at capoeria, English tennis champion... it's completely reasonable that this is just another one of those things he's perfect at on first try.
He's capable of being gentle but has a tendency to escalate - even brief, innocent kisses often spin out of control and transform into desperate grabbing and tangling tongues.
Verbally and physically demonstrative about his affections, when the mood takes him. L consistently shows himself to be a pretty bold personality who doesn't shy away from closing in on what he wants. He kind of just heedlessly does what he wants a lot of the time, doesn't he? That extends to when he wants to be around you, have your attention, be doted on, be entertained, kiss you, have sex with you etc.
In general, I would describe a relationship with him as "intense". He's an intense man. I can understand a dizzying range of headcanons for L, but any idea of him as "relaxed" or "shy" or "passive" or anything like that is just plain wrong and contradicts the person we see in every piece of Death Note media.
Thinks he's straight but is in reality gender agnostic when it comes to falling in love/being attracted to somebody. In Spiraling Trap he's confused if a male player gives him a Valentine's day chocolate, but in my view it's just because he's never given serious thought to himself with another man before. Once he starts developing a strong bond, he'll start to think differently and find that he thinks women and men equally appealing.
Has a bunch of kinks including (but not limited to) foodplay, shibari, feet (cliche but I really think so) and more I don't want to list here for fear of scaring people (nothing objectionable, just weird - by his own admission he's "strange").
For the life of me I can't imagine him as asexual, but if he is, he's the kind that finds sex and kink incredibly interesting on an intellectual level and likes to observe, even if he doesn't partake.
While writing this, I kept feeling compelled to compare him to Near, which is really funny and meta. Near was intentionally written by his authors to have a lot of L's traits as his "natural successor", but at the same time he's his own, completely different person. I don't mean to derail this into a Nearpost so I'll be really brief.
Broad strokes: As a lover, L is intense, confident and open. Near is subtle and withdrawn.
Both men prefer an educated, clever partner who can keep up with them intellectually, but their relationship secret spices are different. L is drawn to people who are interesting and offbeat in some way. Near is drawn to passionate, emotional people who he admires and feels invigorated by.
Things they have in common in love: they are both used to being waited on and getting everything they want, and so expect to be pampered (L with desserts, Near with requisition lists for toys). Detective work takes a lot of their time and they don't want a demanding partner who asks for a lot of time and attention. They don't suffer fools. They can be tactless with their partner on various matters, but don't mean to be malicious.
Things they're very different on in love: L can be fickle and mercurial, Near is more reliable and steadfast. L expresses his feelings verbally quite openly and enjoys just spending time with his lover, Near relies on gift-giving and physical affection to express himself, forever feeling a little shy and poor with words. L enjoys sex and is a natural at it, Near could go without and is average at best even with practice (sorry).
Now let's look at some pictures from Spiraling Trap together. (takes your hand)

(Isn't it wild how this game suggests that he would consider granting his detective code to his lover on his passing if he had one? Fuck them Wammy's kids, I guess.)

Localization Differences: Niles! Happy Belated Birthday, my beloved.
Tumblr media
I wanted to get this done by his actual birthday on the 22nd, but things kept coming up, so here it is now.
Niles is one of my favorites in Fates' cast. He has a very handsome design, he's incredibly useful in gameplay due to his stats, weapon type and capture ability, and he has extremely good supports that give glimpses into his life, pull uncomfortable truths out of others, and offers a sight into the hard life that many Nohrians are forced to live.
One of the most notable things about him, though, is that to a lot of people, he's one of the two first explicitly queer characters introduced in Fire Emblem. I personally find this to be inaccurate given that lots of homoerotic relationships and queer coded characters have existed in the series, arguably stretching back as far as Thracia 776. Other popular examples are Raven/Lucius, Lyn/Florina, Heather, Kyza, Ike/Soren, etc.
Though after Awakening's massive success, the "almighty" S rank takes priority in many readings, so Niles and Rhajat having that available with a Male Corrin and Female Corrin respectively, was massive progress.
Now, do I think one of the explicitly queer characters in FE being a sadist who antagonizes people counts as good representation? No. But 1) that's not the point of this post and 2) going by that tier list I did, I see lots of other characters in Fates as queer than just Niles and Rhajat.
Anyway, I digress. The point of this (extremely long) post is to list and give my opinion on the changes to his lines (and potentially his character/personality) between a translated Japanese script and the localized English script done by Treehouse.
Here is a link to my post of translated sources!
As always, I'm only gonna list things that I find significantly different. Get cozy, this is a massive analysis! Thank you for reading!
To start off, there's two things to set the stage. The first is that Niles is one of Fates' characters that got a completely new name in localization. His Japanese name is Zero, so if I use that name at all in this post, that's why. I might flip-flop between other characters' names too, like from Corrin to Kamui, for example.
The second thing is that, overall, Niles' Japanese lines tend to be coated in innuendo and double entendres. Many times, these only really make sense if you speak Japanese, which I don't, hence why I tried to defer to translations before running things through a machine. For example, I've learned from some translators that when JP!Niles says that he'll "send his enemies to heaven/make them ascend to heaven", it's a statement in Japanese that also works as a euphemism for making someone orgasm. I'm not gonna spend too much time pointing out every instance of JP!Niles saying raunchy stuff, but will if it's particularly funny, striking or outlandish.
---
Classic Mode Retreat Quote
Japanese: Sometimes pain feels good, but I'm about to reach my limit here... I don't want to upset Lord Leon, so I'm going to retreat now...
English: This doesn't feel good anymore... I must retreat while I still can. I'll live to suffer another day...
-If you know Niles, you know his connection to Leo is extremely important to his character. Not just because he's Leo's retainer, but because Niles meeting Leo changed his life forever. So, while removing that one line doesn't sound too outrageous at first, it gets kind of silly when you think about it.
Most of the first gen men in Fates retreat instead of die in Classic mode due to avoid consistency issues if you've unlocked their child's paralogue. However, though they retreat, they still aren't deployable anymore in Classic mode, with the explanation being that they took such grave injuries that they can't fight anymore even though they survive.
Niles/Zero, in his Japanese quote, is pulling himself back from the brink of death because he doesn't want to upset Leo, even if he can't fight anymore. This is a twist on how initially, he begged Leo to kill him after being abandoned by his criminal gang, before Leo hired him as a retainer based on fascination/curiosity with how Niles was acting. All retainers in Fates are close to their masters, but some are closer than others, such as Niles.
Critical/Skill Activation
Japanese: I won't let you get away!/Let's go.../Take it all in!*/This is gonna hurt!
English: You can't hide from me!/Here's a taste.../Ohhh, yes!/Time to suffer!
-Both sets are delightfully fucked up and lewd, but I wanted to draw special attention to the one I marked with an asterisk.
Again, I don't speak Japanese, so I may be way of the mark, but the quote "Take it all in!" in Japanese is 受けてみろよ!or transliterated as "Ukete miro yo!"
Running that through machine translator reads it as "Give it a try!", but I've also watched a Japanese Fates crit quote video where it was translated as "Out of my face..."
But I think I cracked the code: it's a top/bottom joke. It's basically a "Take this!" quote in context of battle, but "Ukete miro yo!", phonetically, is also used in the Seme (top) and Uke (bottom) tropes in BL. So I think he's telling his enemy to 'take his dick', if you wanna be coarse about it.
What solidified this for me, is Nina's Japanese crit/skill quotes. In the Japanese version of Fates, the children share crit/skill quotes (or put some spin on them) with their direct parents. Nina shares "Let's go.../Take it all in!/This is gonna hurt!" but not "I won't let you get away!" because that's what Niles shares with Leo as his retainer (yeah they doubled up on crit quotes a lot in this one lol)
So Nina's fourth crit quote is unique to her, and she says 攻めるわよ!, transliterated as Semeru wa yo! (I'll attack you!) Again, it's a Seme (Semeru wa yo!) and Uke (Ukete miro yo!) euphemism joke. Cuz she's the Fujo. ...I spent a lot of time on this section lmaooo.
The other battle lines for Niles are pretty faithful or otherwise appropriate localizations.
Level Up
0-1 stats: Well... sometimes bad things happen. (JP) How unfortunate. (Eng)
2-3 stats: It's still not enough for me... (JP) I deserve better. (Eng)
4-5 stats: I feel good... (JP) My power is growing. (Eng)
6 or more stats: I can't go easy on you anymore. (JP) My gain will be another's pain. (Eng)
0-1 stats with most stats maxed: It was you who made me this way. (JP) Alas, I am at the height of my powers. (Eng)
-Overall, kind of a mix-and-match between versions, with the JP version being more suggestive and the English version being more powerhungry/sadistic. Neither is out of character.
I do lament the loss of sincerity from his maxed stats quote from Japanese to English (I could be misreading this though, I just think Niles is talking to the player)
Class Change
Japanese: What do you want me to do by dressing me like this...?
English: How quaint.
-Japanese is suggestive, English is weirdly boring? Quaint is not a word that's easily applicable to all situations when it comes to class changes, so meeeeh.
Mess Hall
-Not much to say here, but in Japanese when he eats a bad meal, he asks if there's an aphrodisiac in it, which is pretty funny.
My Castle
-Besides some suggestive flirting being removed or toned down, a couple lines were changed at the gathering spots. In the English version, at a rice paddy he says "Think rice is boring? Think again. I eat it at every meal." while in Japanese he says "Cooked rice is so beaitiful... It's like it's seducing me with its shiny white body..."
In English, at the dairy farm he says "Here, take this. It's good for your bones." while in Japanese he says "Look, milk. When I miled the cow, she mooed with joy..."
Birthday
Giving him a present: To think that my birth would be celebrated... I'm grateful. (JP) The world changed the day I was born. Thank you for acknowledging that. (English)
Saying happy birthday to Corrin: It's your birthday... You should be thankful for all the days since you were born. (JP) Birthdays always make me think of death. Oh, by the way... happy birthday! (English)
-The English ones are funny, but Niles is already funny just through his euphemism schtick. The genuine sincerity being removed makes me sad.
Conquest Chapter 8
-Niles introduction in this chapter is pretty much the same, it's actually mostly Odin who has more line differences. Though this is where the "I'll send them to heaven/make them cum" line pops up for Niles, so I thought I'd mention it.
-Like the rest of the script in Conquest, it is pretty faithful, if a little more bland. But it can't be helped sometimes, given how English and Japanese work so differently as languages. Now Birthright on the other hand...
Birthright Chapter 18 Standard Boss Quote
Japanese: What a nice face you have. I find that look of desperation irresistable. With Lord Leo's permission... I'll do something good for you...
English: Say that's a nice face you've got there. Would be a shame if someone were to slash it. Let's have some fun, shall we?
-Love when Treehouse inserts memes into things that date the game immediately, loooooove it /s "Would be a shame if something happened to it" was an old meme even by 2016, jesus.
Vs. Corrin/Kamui (Japanese)
Zero: So... You're Kamui... The traitorous brother that Lord Leon hates enough to kill...
Kamui: He wants to kill me? Leon...?
Zero: Haha, what a splendid face you're making. The pain in another's face is sublime. Twist it up more for me, I want to see you cry.
Kamui: Huh...
Zero: ...Come on now, you're here to fight me, aren't you? I want to pierce you soon, too... with this thick arrow of mine.
Kamui: !!!
Zero: Hmmm? Are you scared? ...It's okay, I'll be gentle. The pain will be gone before you know it... Once I send you to heaven...
Vs. Corrin English
Niles: So, you're the little thorn in my master's side, are you? Very well. If he wants you dead, who am I to argue?
Corrin: I still can't believe it. We lived as brothers...
Niles: Oh, yes. The suffering on your face is simply delicious. Now, let's see what happens when you have a few more holes...
Corrin: You're sick!
Niles: Oh, please. This is war. This is my job. I'm good at what I do. I'll try to make this painless so you can die in peace. Deal?
-This one is confusing more than anything. Niles sort of has the same lines/message here, but Corrin in Localized Birthright is generally so fucking insufferable that it bleeds into here as well. He talks as if Niles isn't even there, and then calls him sick, which, yes it's true Niles is fucked up, but Corrin is SUPPOSED TO BE EXCEEDINGLY SWEET AND FORGIVING. This extends to his enemies as well, he's very polite with the retainers of the opposing side. Niles isn't any worse than Zola, yet Corrin has worse words for him??? It's weird.
-The other story moments Niles has aren't signifcantly changed to where I feel the need to mention them, even Birthright. Again, it's actually Odin and Leo who are more altered, but that's neither here nor there.
Ghostly Gold
Japanese: You're so naughty. Even like this, you still want more? This place *is* pretty fascinating, but... These are also sacred ruins not to be disturbed. Were a thief like the former me to find out about this place, it'd be quite troublesome. To honor my orders and silence you... I'll make you come by my own hands.
English: Last night was a cinch for me. I always sleep with one eye open. You never know whose grabby little hands might end up in your pockets.
-Some lines in Ghostly Gold, regardless of language, either discuss the gold/treasure, the enemies, or how the army stayed up all night to catch the thieves. Niles' got changed from one to another.
The Japanese one is pretty standard when considering how Niles has moments of sincerity in the Japanese script as it is, but again, losing it in the English version for something completely different? It's not only disappointing, it's confusing. Did some of the people on the job when localizing just not have the original script? Or did they decide just to change it because they felt like it? It's truly dumbfounding to me, how this particular scenario happens in Fates so much.
Boo Camp
Japanese: Please be gentle with me...? I'm not used to things like this... What do you all expect, putting yourselves in danger in a dark place like this. At least if I were a monster like you, I'd take everyone who comes here to the cruel edge of ecstasy. (I'd make everyone who comes here cum cruelly? idk)
English: Be gentle, boys... or whatever you are. I don't know what we expected, making ourselves so vulnerable in the dark. But you'll find out like all the others that I give as good as I get.
-Omg, Vers King Niles in the English version... That's all I have to say about this, it's faithful, and a really great example of how to keep suggestive euphemism while not being a literal translation.
-The other DLC maps with character dialogue don't have too big of changes, or at least ones that give insight into Niles to mention.
Niles' Father Support with M!Kana
-A rank: Pretty much the same until the very end, where in the JP version, after promising to have a night in with Kana and Corrin, Niles says “Haha… I never thought the day would come when I would be sleeping peacefully with my whole family. I have always wanted to destroy other people's happiness, but now that I have it for myself, I want to protect it at all costs. Perhaps I'm the most selfish one…” Calling himself selfish is in reference to earlier in A rank, where Niles says parents can act selfish since they sometimes want their children to stay reliant on them so as to not feel lonely, even if they understand that they must fly the nest someday. Because this is a variant-parent conversation, the meaning is the same if Kana has a different father, though instances of unique characterization come through at times. In Niles’ case, it’s his referencing how he’s usually sadistic in dealing with others, especially those who grew up privileged. However, now that he has a family and is surrounded by love, he understands the feeling of wanting to protect happiness instead of ruining it.
In the English version, the line is instead “Heh. Never thought I'd be spending a night in with a family of my very own. So this must be happiness, huh? Maybe it's something worth protecting after all. Looks like Kana's not the only one who's changing…” The general gist *is* there, but the different wording can make it seem like Niles doesn’t know what happiness is, which would be kind of odd for his character; to be a sadist who delights taking happiness away from others, you have to know what it means. Niles knows what it means, and is resentful because he never got it before. I’m also very nitpicky, though, so I could be overcomplicating things.
Niles’ Father Support with Shigure
C Rank: JP version, Niles says that Shigure’s talents for art can captivate people regardless of gender, another example of a unique line variant depending on the father (for example Hinata relates Shigure’s interest in art to his interest in swords, Saizo tells Shigure that he shouldn’t focus on art during a war despite appreciating is talent, etc.)
For Niles it’s interesting here, since it’s in reference to how Niles is also attracted to multiple genders.
In the English version, Niles instead says “I think your work might turn a few heads.” The same message, but it lost a bit of spice.
There’s nothing else really important to mention, but in the JP version during the A rank, when Shigure’s running late and out of breath to the art exhibit, Niles asks if he’s out of breath because he got laid, which is really fucking funny.
Niles with Subaki
-In the JP script, there's more of an amicable attempt at building friendship from Niles. During B rank, he says "it'd be great if two warped people like us could get along." referring to how Subaki's perfectionist mindset is obsessive and destructive. The English version has him say "The mighty Mr. Perfect reveals a crack in the facade! Strangely, that just makes me hate you less." which is more impersonal.
During A rank, while Subaki is venting about how tired it is keeping up appearances, Niles offers different things between languages. In the Japanese version, he offers a massage (he's good at massages, also revealed in his father support with M!Kana) to take Subaki's mind off things, and Subaki accepts and is genuinely grateful towards Niles.
In the English version... he asks Subaki to 'give him some of his burden' by taking his worries and placing them in his hands. Not in a suggestive way, he's being for real in how Subaki should do this weird mime act of putting his worries in Niles' hands. And replacing the line of Subaki thanking Niles, he instead asks Niles what he plans to do with his worries, to which Niles says "Don't worry about that. I'll put them to good use. Heh heh..."
This was just confounding? Like, okay, I get it, Niles is perverted, so by association offering a massage is lewd itself. But if you're gonna change it, write something with the same energy, not this mime act that ends on a very awkward and clunky note. The JP version reads as if they're finally friends or amiable, the English version is still distant sounding.
Niles/Zero with Mozu/Mozume
-For context, Mozu has been visiting her run down village looking for a special jewel, and Niles has been following her. They discuss her losing her family. During B rank, in the Japanese version, these lines are said:
Mozume: Have you ever lost someone and felt sad? Don't you know what it's like to lose something?
Zero: Oh, I don't know. I just wanted to see your face twisted in pain.
Mozume: What... what did you say!?
Zero: I love seeing the pain on other people's faces. It makes me want to torment them more and make them cry... The reason I became interested in you is because I knew about your village's past.
Mozume: You're a terrible person...
Zero: But... it's been very boring. You're already suffering and griveing enough without me having to do anything.... So I've lost interest in doing anything to you. Don't worry.
Mozume: What a selfish person...
In the English version, this is said instead:
Mozu: Haven't you ever been upset when someone passed? Don't you know that knot in your gut when you lose someone?
Niles: ...That's neither here nor there. I prefer not to dwell on those things. Better to live for the pleasures of the now. I could give you a demonstration, if it would take your mind off things.
Mozu: Th-this is hardly the time!
Niles: If you want to wallow in pain and misery in the ruins of your home, suit yourself. But my offer still stands if you'd rather have some fun instead.
Mozu: You... you're horrible...
Niles: And you're boring, which is worse. It wouldn't take much for me to make you feel better. Believe me, I know lots of ways. But I can see you'd rather be miserable, so carry on without me.
Mozu: Wh-what a self-centered jerk...
-So, the English version has Niles offer to hook up with Mozu in the ruins of her home. Furthermore, Niles in the English version keeps pressing the issue in "making her feel better" and fucks off when she rightfully rejects his advances. But in the JP version, there's something else here.
Niles' code is poking at people who haven't suffered *or* people who pry into others feelings for no good reason. Saying outlandish stuff is a defense mechanism for him, he does that to actively push people away. This is discussed in his Japanese support with Azura, which I'll get to later.
Niles took an interest in Mozu's situation because he knows something fucked up happened to her (Niles is actually quite compassionate to others who have suffered greatly once he finds out about it), but when Mozu asked him about if he ever felt loss, she *unknowingly set off his defense mechanisms* and he responsed like an asshole. A rank concludes with Niles having recovered the jewel that Mozu was looking for, which is what he was intending to do ever since Mozu first told him about it during C rank. Mozu isn't at fault whatsoever, it's just Niles couldn't help responding cruelly.
BUT, this only really works in the JP version, because instead of offering to hook up with Mozu to make her feel better, he instead says that "I don't know [if I ever felt the pain of loss], but I do like seeing other people's faces in pain" which flows better as a conversation. Couple that with how Niles says he won't bother her because she's suffering enough, it displays that Mozu isn't the type of person he would target, it just came out because of Niles' trauma response. This doesn't work in the English version because Niles implies that Mozu is actively making herself sad, which is not only incorrect, it dulls Mozu's situation and screws up Niles' secretly compassionate side. Just... :///
Niles/Zero with Arthur/Harold
So there's stuff concerning the entire chain, but I'll focus on B rank and A rank for now.
In the Japanese B rank, there's this exchange:
Zero: If you don't trust me, then maybe I'll go bust into that mansion for real.
Harold: In that case, I'd have to deliver judgment onto you. I've received a request to stop these robbers.
Zero: Hmph. Whatever, just try not to make it too easy for them.
Harold: ...That's suspicious.
Zero: What is?
Harold: People like you who try to unnerve others often have something to hide. They keep their distance from others so nobody can discover their secrets.
Zero: You think that nonsense passes for actual theory?
Harold: I did come up with that one on the spot, so...
Zero: Right, I thought so.
Harold: I don't care what sort of life you lead, but there's something you're hiding, speak now.
In the English B rank, it's changed to this:
Niles: You've given me an idea. Perhaps, I will join up with this band of merry thieves...
Arthur: Oh, come on! You can't be serious!
Niles: Maybe I am! What are you going to do about it?
Arthur: This is suspicious...
Niles: Wait. You're actually ACTUALLY serious.
Arthur: Well, joking about a crime is a well-known defense technique. Because, if you joke about it, surely you wouldn't actually DO it, right? Oh ho! Thought you could outthink Arthur, did you, evildoer?
Niles: Your logic is breathtakingly stupid.
Arthur: Is it? Darn. I did just kind of make that up.
Niles: Yep. It was obvious.
Arthur: Well, you can make fun of me all you want. But if you're hiding something, you better tell me now.
-The English version kind of has Arthur go "Dumb Cop" mode by doing a pretty vapid investigative trick, but in the Japanese version, he doesn't exclusively reference the crime. His theory is that Zero talks outlandishly to others in order to keep distance from them... which is EXACTLY correct, that's what he does and why he does it. Zero rebuffs him and tells him it's stupid because of that very same idea, that he doesn't want Harold prying into his business. Harold only connects this to the crime at the moment because he believes that "well people who talk like that to others must be hiding something, therefore he must be hiding something regarding this band of thieves he used to work with." The end point is wrong, but the reasoning is correct, even if Harold admits he made it up on the spot. (But that's also supposed to tie into how he's the grounded/emotionally in-touch Axe Fighter for Fates, he was written intentionally to be very good at reading people)
This was kind of scrubbed from the English version, with how Niles eggs him on by dancing around the subject of the thieves and how he might work with them, and Arthur/Harold only centering his reasoning around *criminal activity* instead of the thought process/psychology of Niles/Zero himself. This dumbs Arthur down while making Niles more childish.
Now for rank A. For context, Arthur subdued the thieves but saw Niles sneak into the jailhouse and assumed again that he was working with them. However, he then saw how Niles was lecturing the group and trying to get them to reform, and Niles explains by going into his past. Afterwards, in the Japanese version, there's this exchange:
Harold: I never imagined you had such a past... Thank you for telling me. I see you had nothing to hide today.
Zero: What's that supposed to mean?
Harold: You didn't use your usual, unpleasant manner of speech while you were talking. That's proof that you weren't hiding anything.
Zero: ...The hell are you talking about? Is that another one of your stupid, spur-of-the-moment theories?
Harold: And if it is? Just because it's spur-of-the-moment doesn't mean it's wrong. I felt moved knowing that even you can speak candidly. Alright, now let's go tell everyone what we just discussed. If we do that, they'll all understand that even you can speak properly in the right situation.
Zero: No way. Now get outta here unless you want me to plunge a thick arrow-shaft into you.
Harold: ...Whoa there. I see you're still hiding something after all. But you're cute, so I'll let it slide.
Zero: Huh? Cute?
Harold: What you're trying to hide is your own embarrassment. Feeling embarrassed from hearing my praise, you switched back to your unpleasant way of speaking. But it's no use hiding from me now, I know everything.
Zero: Why you...
Harold: Let's get along from now on. If there's anything you need to talk about, don't hesitate to ask me. As someone who understands you now, I'll listen to my heart's content.
Zero: Tch...
The English version replaces that with this:
Arthur: Thank you for sharing that, Niles. I should have relied on Lord Leo's judgment and trusted you from the start. Now then! I'm off to tell everyone about what a great guy you are!
Niles: Um, that's reall now necessary.
Arthur: Of course it is! It's not fair that you have a bad reputation. People need to know the truth about you! Justice must prevail! I will shout it from the rooftops. "Niles is A-OK in my book"! Ha ha! This is going to be great!
Niles: Can we go back to being enemies?
--Not only is the exchange a lot shorter in English, it's less intimate/emotionally charged. It dials up the humor by writing Arthur to be a bit of a dingbat and Niles being dragged along against his wishes.
Arthur/Harold in the Japanese script, is written to be very good at interpersonal communication and sympathy, hence why he fights for justice and moral causes (saving Azura from being punished, helping any and all citizens instead of just being completely dedicated to Elise like Effie is, taking on dangerous jobs despite his bad luck, etc.). He's an incredibly splendid guy who has a knack for reading people.
And the Japanese A rank proves that he was right in thinking Zero was keeping a part of himself hidden, because Harold noticed that he wasn't talking outlandishly anymore when revealing his past, therefore, he was being genuine and speaking from the heart. Further proving that, is that when Harold genuinely praises him, Zero shrinks into himself and goes on defense again, trying to push him away by threatening to "fuck him with an arrow." Harold clocks this IMMEDIATELY as him trying to hide his embarrassment over being praised, before calling him cute and letting him know that if Zero has anything to vent about, that he'll always be willing to listen, to which the latter again gets embarrassed by.
This massive layer of intimacy and vulnerability between them-especially from Arthur-being removed is devastating! Getting to see Niles be vulnerable and sincere is a very rare treat, and the fact that Arthur is able to pull that side out of him (when the only other people really able to do that are Leo and his spouse) showcases how close Arthur and Niles can be, even if the latter doesn't admit it. The JP version of this conversation is one of the major reasons why Arthur has potential to be read as queer himself, not just because he calls Niles cute, but also because he's able to do something for Niles that's reserved for his closer relationships.
Having this all be replaced/cut out makes me sad, especially since it dumbs down Arthur and dulls Niles' personality. Hell, this also kind of extends to the C rank, where in the Japanese version it's implied that they knew/heard of each other before their current jobs since they were both from the slums, but had never spoken until now due to contrasting personalities and ideals. The English version scrubs that implication away, only having Arthur say "Your reputation precedes you" and Niles say "I don't like smug goody-goodies", as if they only became aware of each other when they got employed and immediately got bad vibes from the other. No! Niles was a known outlaw and Arthur was a known town hero! Of course they heard of each other, and just didn't know how to speak with one another in the palace until the current day!
Ughhh, it's SUCH a good support, yet the English version's changes and alterations just do it no justice whatsoever.
Niles with Azura
-In B rank, Niles explains why he thinks him and Azura are similar, delving into his past and personality in the process. In the JP version he says:
"There are two types of people I like to direct my colorful words to. The first are people who don't seem to know anything about hardship. [...] I was abandoned by my parents when I was a child, and was living in the slums soon after. Maybe that's why, when I see people who've never experienced hardship, I want to see their faces twitch. [...] I followed a hopeless path until Lord Leo took me in. [...] Moving on, perhaps due to my upbringing, I also don't like people who invade other people's hearts with bad intentions. I use my words to put people at a distance from me. [...] However, you aren't anything like either group. You had a turbulent upbringing and you try to keep your distance from others. So I thought to myself that you and I were alike."
In the English version, he says:
"You and I have both experienced real suffering unlike most of the idiots we know. [...] As a child, I was abandoned by my parents and had to fend for myself in the slums. Before Lord Leo accepted me as his retainer, I was literally living in the gutter... [...] It's left me with a low tolerance for people who lack compassion. I cannot stand shallow people! I try to avoid them at all costs. [...] I can tell that you are different from the others, milady. In fact, I get the impression that your childhood was no picnic either. You keep your distance by being aloof, while I actively drive people away. The more people I offend, the fewer I have to put up with. See? We're quite the same."
--Again, the general gist is there in the English version, but it's missing good details while muddying up others. The JP version reads like Zero pushing people away as a defense mechanism, and his envy towards others living privileged lives warping into resentment and antagonism. The English version weirdly makes things more vague, having Niles say he hates "shallow people who lack compassion" which can apply to anyone! A layer to Niles' character is the resentment towards the privileged, hence why his backstory involves breaking into the royal castle and he's not afraid of being scathing towards Corrin, Camilla (royalty), Felicia (royal maid), and Setsuna (noblewoman). It's why his support with Azura is a bit of an oddball, that was intentional. Niles can deduce that Azura is carrying heavy stuff with her like he is, since you have to be a little fucked up to end up distant and detached like Azura is. Her being royalty doesn't matter, because the vibe he gets from her overrules that. But for that overrule to make sense, you have to keep Niles' antagonism towards the privileged, and Treehouse gets fairly iffy with that.
Also in the JP version Niles says he and Azura are like hedgehogs, and the English version changed it to porcupines. As a huge Sonic fan, I'm obligated to be upset by this.
Niles with Elise
--Okay, this one is kind of difficult to talk about, because given Elise's age (at the very least 15, I believe, but possibly older), Niles can come off as a creep.
In Japanese C rank, Elise says she's still too young/too immature to go to the strategy meetings, thinking she'd just be a nuisance to everybody. Niles disagrees and says she "has a great body" which yeah, isn't great sounding. I think the intent was she "has a mature body" which also isn't great sounding, but the point was that Elise is, going by age, is mature enough. Further on, he asks if it'd be better if she stopped thinking of herself as too young, and join in the meetings for the benefit of Nohr.
In the English version, the comments on Elise's body are scrubbed out, but it also ups the childish factor on Elise a LOT for some reason. Instead of seeing herself as a child and lamenting her not understanding the discussions at the war council, she complains that everyone else treats her like a kid instead, hence why she doesn't go to the meetings. That holds very different implications no matter the language, since recognizing your own immaturity is ironically a very mature thing to do, and Elise is characterized as having extremely keen sensibilities. Complaining that others keep treating you like a kid, on the other hand, is extremely immature (hence the constant trope usage by characters like Ricken, Hayato, Lysithea, etc.)
In the Japanese B rank, after being told she didn't need to go to the meeting because it still might be too hard to understand, Elise is very upset. She says:
"You know, Zero... I went to the meeting. And then they told me that I didn't need to go again. It was still too difficult for me to understand [...] Yes. even though everyone was at the meeting... in the end I was the only one left out... [...] No, it's okay. It wasn't unnecessary advice. The problem is me. I act like too much of a child... how do I become an adult..."
Once again, a lot of the emphasis is put on how Elise sees herself as childish, not necessarily others. Zero gives her advice again, saying that her heart might be the problem. He says:
"You say that you want to become an adult, but in your heart you just want to be a child, don't you? The heart shows what you truly are. Heading to meetings with a spoiled heart, of course you'd be seen as unnecessary. Unless you do something about your heart, you won't be needed no matter how old you get."
He then says it's wonderful to see her cry, which again, yes it's fucked up but Zero is fucked up.
In the English version, it removes the line about him liking to see her cry, but also changes the exchange again. Elise now says:
"I w-went to the war meeting like you said, but they told me I didn't need to be there! They said i-i-it was too complicated for me! J-j-jerks! [...] Yeah! Everyone else was there, and I'm th-the only one they said should leave! It's so dumb! Dumb dumb dumb! They're all just a bunch of dumbheads! Why won't they take me seriously?! I even showed up and everything! I'm and adult, right? They should treat me like ooooonnee! *sob* [...] No, you were right. I need to study more. I'm no better than a child. My siblings are so mature... Why can't I be like them?"
Again, I don't speak Japanese, so maybe Elise is crashing out just as hard in the JP script and I just don't know it, but holy fuck, they really ramped up her outburtst here! It's not too far from Peri level, which is unfitting for Elise. While childish in some aspects, she's keen and introspective in others, always desiring to improve. The English version did this part of her personality no favors.
And keep in mind, it was also Treehouse that was responsible for Leo's infamous line where he says "Elise, when do you intend to behave like the adult that you technically are?" That line and its implications were not the same in the JP version, where he instead complains that Elise still acts like such a brat. So, what's the deal here, Treehouse? Is Elise an adult or not?
Anyway, Niles' reply to Elise is kind of the same, but instead of saying "heart" he says "attitude" which gets the same meaning across, and because Elise references her siblings in the English version, he does as well.
-Now, for A rank, there's not as much changed here, but in the Japanese version, Zero is clearly disappointed that his advice inadvertently cost him a chance to see Elise cry/suffer again, given that Elise used the advice on changing her heart and it worked. The English version... only half scrubbed this away, for some reason? They changed a line to have Niles say "I'm proud of you, Elise. That's wonderful. Though... perhaps also something of a shame." It's awkward because Niles isn't written to be that disappointed anymore, you can't have both!
-S rank is a bit of a trip. So, in both versions, Elise says that she wants to marry someone like Niles in the future, because she wants a husband like him that'll tell her things directly and not shy away from harsh truths. But then the versions diverge.
In the Japanese version, it's Niles who brings out a ring and proposes, saying something along the lines of "I had a boyish/immature mindset, where I teased you so much and wanted to see you cry because I was in love with you" and "From now on, you'll face harsh realities. But you don't have to hold back tears. Please cry as much as you want around me. I'll help stop them for you. [...] I'll do my best to be even more wonderful for you, and help you grow into a fine adult."
In the English version, however, it's Elise who brings out a ring and proposes. In response, Niles says "Well I supposed I must accept. [...] I never expected it. But I have grown to love you. You have an innocence about you that I have rarely seen in my life. I lost hope, once, because I bore witness to the worst evils the world has to offer. But you have rekindled that hope in my heart. I could not live without you. [...] And I vow I will do everything in my power to help you in all your endeavors. Though I supposed we'll start with making you a responsible, regal princess, eh?"
-Again, I don't know what the intent is here by Treehouse. You make Elise more childish, outbursts and all, but then have her be the one to propose? And then have Niles comment on her innocence? What? Is she a child or not? Is it appropriate for her to marry or not? Now I could be misreading things, since the "innocence" bit could be translated from Niles saying he had an "innocent schoolboy love" for Elise, or it could've been Treehouse's mistake. Still, that doesn't change the fact that Treehouse had Elise be the one to propose, which is contradictory within this support chain, said support chain being contradictory to what was established earlier in the game. Make up your minds!
Niles with Leo
-A rank sets the scene a bit differently between versions. In the English version, Niles is contemplating the future. This leads him to say he’s confident about his future rather than worried, because he found a purpose in serving as Leo’s retainer. JP version, on the other hand, has Niles thinking about how he is in the present. This leads him to consider his past and come to terms with how lucky he believes himself to be at the moment, and wishing to convey his gratitude to Leo for his part in his life. The same case in B rank happens here as well, where the JP version has Niles express gratitude over finally having a place to stay (which I think is very intimate and vulnerable, because I read it as a "place of belonging"), while the English version has him say his life now has a purpose. That could carry the same weight, but on an interpersonal level, idk, it doesn't feel as deep.
Niles with Camilla
This support is pretty juicy, but key things from Japanese to English get lost. When Zero asks why Camilla relentlessly showers Kamui with love, this exchange happens in the Japanese version:
Camilla: My love for Kamui? I don't quite understand it either. I do think dearly of him, but I don't have a reason for it. Howver, Kamui did have a bad childhood... perhaps that's why I treat him kindly.
Zero: Would it be fair to say that Lady Camilla's love is... selfless (unconditional)?
Camilla: I wonder.
Zero: I see... Heh. Heheheheheheheh...
Camilla: ...What is it?
Zero: I do not agree with that.
Camilla: then, what do you really think?
Zero: Am I allowed to say it?
Camilla: Of course.
Zero: The reason is simple. Because you're a pitiful human being.
Camilla: ! What do you mean by pitiful?
Zero: I'll save it for next time, I'll tell you a story that'll blow your mind.
In the English version, Camilla instead says this first:
"What do you mean? I love Corrin! He's such a sweetie! Plus, he had a terrible childhood. I think he deserves a little kindness now!"
Because of this change to Camilla not really fully knowing the reason why she dotes on Corrin, Niles subsequently doesn't ask her if her love is selfless/unconditional. Instead this exchange happens:
Niles: As I suspected! Your so-called love is nothing more than pity. You're probably one of those people who brings home lost puppy dogs too.
Camilla: Of course I would! Who would leave a cute, little puppy out in the cold?
Niles: Heh heh...
Camilla: *gasp* You would, wouldn't you?! Niles, you're terrible!
Niles: There's a reason you fixate on helping poor pathetic creatures!
Camilla: Is that so? And what's that?
Niles: You live a pathetic existence. You're trying to make yourself feel better!
--In Japanese, the clear cause of her own obsessive devotion to Corrin is unknown even to her, and Corrin's bad childhood is just the best reason she can put forward. In English, she says that's the definitive reason, with no hesitation or deliberation. So not only is there this weird gag inserted in the English version where Niles would leave puppies to suffer, Camilla's own problems are dulled.
Now for B rank, the context here is that, before explaining why he called her pitiful, Niles asks Camilla a hypothetical question on why humans love animals. This is how it plays out in Japanese:
Zero: They (people) want to be loved. But that reality doesn't exist for them. That's why they turn to animals to fill the hole in their heartst. That's exactly what your relationship with Lord Kamui is like. You pitied your own existence and thought that you never received enough love. And so you sougt to devote your love to someone more pitiful than yourself... in other words, Lord Kamui. For your own, disgusting form of comfort.
Camilla: ...If that's the case, so what? What's the point of you saying this.
In English, this exchange is written like this instead:
Niles: It's because people want to be loved. They want companionship-a person to come home to, and if they can't get it... They'll settle for a furry creature who'll greet them and slobber on their shoes. This is the same relationship you have with that lost, little puppy-Lord Corrin. You're miserable, so you shower him with affection, and that puppy slobbers back!
Camilla: Are you calling Corrin a dog? That's disgusting!
--The difference in Camilla's response is important. In Japanese, she doesn't deny that this is the kind of relationship she's cultivated with Corrin. In English, she pivots to offense at Corrin being called a dog. Niles' words about her kind of love is disgusting are also dulled a bit, and the indirect antagonism towards Corrin is also ramped up.
The lack of denial on Camilla's part in JP is important to understand how fucked up she is as well. It connects back to C rank where she wonders if her love is actually selfless/unconditional, and the truth is, it's not. She goes of the deep end in Birthright becasue of her warped love towards Corrin, blending love and cruelty together, because that's how she was raised as well. She's mature enough to reflect on it a bit, but nowhere near close to getting it under control. Removing this tidbit removes the juicy implications that Camilla's character brings.
Niles/Zero then goes on to explain his background to Camilla, how he likes to give hell to people who he believes have never known hardship. This leads us into A rank. In Japanese, Camilla says this:
"You said I never knew hardship and must have been happy because I'm royalty. I summoned you here to tell you that you're wrong. [...] Did you know? Marx (Xander) is the only one among Nohrian royalty was mothered by the queen. Leon, Elise and I are children of concubines. All of us had different mothers. [...] Concubines are in fragile positions. In order to raise their status, even just a bit, they would quarrel and insult each other during their free time. And that's not all. Their spats affected their children as well. All sorts of conflicts arised using the children as an excuse. [...] Your claim that I'm pitiful is not entirely wrong. I exist only to bind my mother to Father. Mother may have loved me, but perhaps that itself was just love towards Father.
In English, however, she says this:
"I know what you thought! She's royalty! She must be happy! Her life is perfect! You're wrong! I wasn't born in the slums, but my childhood wasn't all roses either. [...] O. Didn't you know? Xander is the only one of my siblings born to the queen. The rest of us-Leo, Elise, and I-we're all children of King Garon's mistresses. Different mistresses, I might add. He loved to pit our mothers against each other. [...] Our mothers were the lowest of the low, trying to claw their way to a better status. Naturally, they used us as bait in all of their conflicts. [...] You said I was pathetic, and you were right! My mother loved me, but only as a pawn. Do I dote on Corrin? Yes, I do! I remember what it feels like to be alone!
---There are several things to note here.
1) The English version says Garon loved to pit the concubines against each other, while the Japanese version says the concubines did it on their volition. The English change doesn't make sense, of course, because the whole reason why Garon went off the deep end was because of the stress borne as result of the concubines feuding. He wasn't cruel when they were alive, he became disillusioned and went mad after the fact, including after Azura's mother came and went.
2) Camilla in the Japanese version presents a more detached scenario, including how she felt towards her mother. The experience no doubt fucked her up, but she truly is reflective on whether her mother loved her, or if that was just an extension of her love for Garon. This contrasts with Leo, who explicitly says he never loved his mom, and Elise who (in the Japanese version at least) says she loved her mom, but her mom didn't love her back. In the English version, Camilla is more sure that her mother didn't love her for real, and calls her and the other concubines the lowest of the low. It's quite different, and I don't know if I dislike the approach compared to the detached one in Japanese.
3) Camilla brings up Corrin in English, saying she dotes on him because she knows what it's like to not be loved. JP version, she doesn't bring him up, and instead further contemplates if her mother actually cared for her.
I know this is about Niles, but what the partner says in a conversation with him can change his response. Case in point, this is the exchange that follows Camilla's background in the Japanese version:
Zero: That's enough, Lady Camilla. I was mistaken. You are not pitiful, you are a woman who's stood strong and never resigned yourself... someone far too dazzling for me.
Camilla: Zero...
In English, this is what the exchange is instead:
Niles: I'm so sorry. I was wrong about you! You disguise your pain well. I didn't realize.
Camilla: I didn't tell you all this so you could apologize. I want you to think twice before you judge someon else unfairly!
---The English version made Niles more impersonal (and kind of a wimp) in his apology, and Camilla more reactive in response. In Japanese, the words he uses are more... genuine? I'd like to say? And Camilla is genuinely stunned that he'd retract his words like that. Again, Niles' can be very compassionate and sincere, he's just a hard nut to crack. And Camilla, well... her violent tendencies was meant to be more of a "tranquil fury" kind of anger, the kind that unnerves and terrifies you, rather than is abrupt and shocking, but the English version sort of altered that as well.
Oh, and in the JP version, as recompense Niles offers to apologize in the nude and be dragged around, but in the English version he asks her to beat him instead. Not to important, because Camilla refuses either way, but in English she does say "Seriously, Niles. I'll pass. If you want to be flogged, you'll have to do it yourself." Which is really fucking funny so kudos to Treehouse, you got a laught out of me.
--S Rank has less important changes, but in Japanese Camilla does get very forward and flirtatious with him, saying that "even though you're not a thief anymore, you've stolen my heart" and is more open to his sexual advances at the end of the conversation. In the English version, though, she gets a bit more scandalized, which is :/
Niles with Corrin
-In C rank, there's a bit of a change. In Japanese Zero says that trust is born from violent clashes but that maybe there was a difference in how him and Kamui were raised. Still, he says it's nice of Kamui to say he trusts him. Kamui's interest is piqued he wants to talk to Zero more, to which the latter says that he has weird hobbies but to do whatever he liked.
In English, Niles instead says "trust is borne ouf of a violent confrontation or traumatic experience. I supposed you must have had some kind of blessed childhood, free from worry." Corrin rebukes this and Niles apologizes. When Corrin tries to probe, Niles says "Oh ho! You offer nothing and expect juicy gossip in return. Sorry, child, but you'll have to do better than that."
--Not only is Niles more antagonistic towards Corrin in English, he also just assumes that Corrin's childhood was good, which he doesn't do in Japanese. He's actually quite objective and calm in Japanese. The change remains odd, because then the B rank flips Niles to be nicer all of a sudden.
Anyway, in B, there's details that are different. In Japanese, Niles says this, when asked to relay his background to Corrin.
Zero: I'm fine with it. It's not really a big deal, anyway. Ever since I've been a child, I've done anything I had to to get by. Stealing, begging, assaulting people, killing them... It would be pretty difficult to think of an evil deed I haven't done. [...] What? Surprised, ar you? I haven't even gotten to the best part! Anything I had that was of any value, I'd sell. Everything you could think of. The most intense one was that one time... who would've thought such a great man would-
But in English, he says this:
Niles: Very well. But you should know up front that it's not all lollipops and puppy dogs. Since I was a chold, I've had to do a lot of unsavory things just to survive. Steal, beg, kill-just another Tuesday for li'l Niles, sadly. [...] Surprised? I haven't even gotten to the good stuff.
--Basically, the Japanese version implies a lot more, including prostitution. The English version cuts it off. After that, it kind of continues the same way, though Niles in the JP version does more openly admit he was exaggerating a bit.
A rank doesn't have anything major regarding Niles, but the "low-friction tactical grappling and strategy" that he mentions in the English version? In Japanese is instead referred to as "sumo wrestling, famous sport in Hoshido." I'm a sucker for a developed world, so someone besides Rinkah talking about sumo was a neat surprise.
The S rank for Female Corrin was pretty faithfully adapted, but was also notoriously used for the Male Corrin as well. Here are the lines that were in the Japanese S support, exclusively for Male Corrin and Niles.
After asking Corrin to marry him, this exchange happens:
Kamui: B-but... I'm a man, you know.
Zero: I'm aware of that. We're both men, and our social positions differ greatly, but I'm saying this with both of those things in mind. I... love you, Lord Kamui. No matter what anyone says. I couldn't keep myself from conveying these feelings any longer.
Kamui: You're serious...
Zero: Yeah. It's the first time I've felt like this. This is different from my loyalyt to Lord Leo- I've been feeling something warm in my body all this time. It's strange... normally, I like watching others be troubled, but when you look sad, I feel a pain in my chest. I want to protect you with my own two hands, keep you precious to me, and spoil you rotten. And... if possible, I wish to make you happier than anybody else.
Kamui: ...Zero...
Zero: Lord Kamui... would you be willing to marry me?
Kamui: ...
Zero: ...I guess that's a no. I'm sure you'd preferred it to have com from a woman, but hearing this from a man must be...
Kamui: … even if you won’t tell me about your past…
Zero: Huh?
Kamui: If it’s about the future, then we should be able to talk about it, right? From bygone days to the future – why don’t we talk about it together? If yes, then… I accept your proposal.
Zero: Is it really all right? Are you certain? You… won’t regret this?
Kamui: I won’t regret it. If I told you I wasn’t surprised, I’d be lying, but… what you said earlier made me so happy. I want to accept your feelings. I want us to be happy together. … from now on and forever, I always want to be with you.
Zero: … Thank you. … I wasn’t wrong about you after all.
Kamui: Haha. It’s an honor to measure up to your expectations.
--You're free to draw your own conclusions on this. I feel that gay relationships are inherently different in our society compared to straight ones, so writing them should be different. Given that, I prefer the original JP lines over the English version making the S rank the same between genders. It feels more real, and the extra lovey-dovey stuff from Niles to M!Corrin exclusively is just, ughhh, chef's kiss.
Endings
The only major different one is the gay one with Niles and M!Corrin in Conquest. In Japanese it's this:
"Kamui, after helping the reconstruction of both Nohr and Hoshido countries, traveled the world. By his side was the constant presence of Zero. It is said that the two of them left stories in every land. In their later years, they opened a small orphanage for children who were not blessed and lived their lives quietly."
In English, it's this:
"After helping restore Hoshido and Nohr, Corrin and Niles traveled the world together. The two were celebrated for their humanitarian work, inspiring songs, folktales, and poems worldwide."
---The English endings in general are a lot shorter, since you're able to convey a lot more information with Japanese letters/characters in the same amount of space compared to the English alphabet. Still, if I had to pick, I wish they brought over the orphanage tidbit instead, it's so fucking sweet.
Private Quarters Lines (These are the big changes that I have issues with)
Japanese (Friendship)
"You're an unguarded person, huh... If I became "interested" and did you right here... What would you do?"
"You're still using your hands purely... Shall I teach that body of yours something good?"
"Not bad. Next time I'll be the one servicing you."
"To have been noticed by a royal like you... wasn't so bad I guess. As thanks, I'll teach you about a lot of various things... Painful things... And pleasurable things, okay?"
English (Friendship)
"You seem nervous. Was this meant to be a date?"
"It's so revealing to see your room like this. I feel like I know you better than ever."
"I know, I know, it's my turn to invite you over. There's just... things... I don't want you to see. Yet."
"To think... an urchin like me... best friends with a royal like you. Life is so strange sometimes..."
Japanese (Lovers)
"For all that I had to endure... you better prepare yourself tonight. Even if you cry or scream... I won't stop."
"Close your eyes. Don't worry... Right now, I won't go any farther than a touch."
"I love you. My heart, which had been broken a long time ago... You picked it up and fixed it."
"Even now, I see this dream... A painful and agonizing dream... From when I was a child. But... If I were to wake up and see you beside me... I'll be okay. Please stay by my side. And when I sleep... Please hold my hand and never let go."
English (Lovers)
"I've waited so long for this. I'm never going to let you go!"
"Close those beautiful eyes for a second. ...Well?"
"I never thought I'd feel this way about anyone. It's a weakness, I suppose..."
"You've taught me to embrace love... and showed me that it can just as exquisite as pain. Let's share plenty of both."
---Yes, Niles in Japanese is more sexually charged, whether you're friends or lovers. But he's also SO MUCH MORE VULNERABLE, what the hell! He talks about how the world has broken his heart and how he has nightmares, and wants Corrin to stay by his side at night, just holding his hand!!! He's being sensitive and sincere and so ooey-gooey, ughhhh! In comparison, I feel the English version turned him into a personified ;) face, which has its own charm, but thinking about what it replaced? Yeah, it's no contest for me, I think the Japanese lines are better. Similarly...
Confession
Japanese: "So warm... Is this love? I can feel you deep inside me. When did I... become like this... and fall in love with you."
English: "Do you have any idea what you're getting into? I sure hope not."
---The confession is also a lot sweeter and heartfelt in Japanese, while impersonal and trying to be funny in English. I dearly love Niles when he's open and sincere, and it's a shame that many just haven't seen it.
-------
That's all I had to comment on! Thank you for reading, this was really fucking long lmaoooo.

Miscellaneous Hcs for the yellowjackets ‘post-rescue, they all live in a big house together (official name pending) au’
Been havin a not so good days and needed the comfort of this so it’s a bit messy. would love to hear any comments, questions or requests you have based on these !
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- they have one cat - wasp - who they found in the wilderness (I’ve made a post about him before which you can probably find by searching for him on my page), anyway, he stays with Tai (and because of that Van and Nat too) after they are rescued and naturally moves into the big house with them all when they move in. Melissa really badly wants a dog but because Van is scared they can’t have one - she has a stuffed dog called Rupert though and she treats him like a real dog. Eventually a compromise was met and Mel got a frog for her birthday, she named him Michael. Akilah and Mari each have a mouse, Mickey and Minnie. Lottie has a bigggg fish tank and lots of fish she loves to just sit and watch.
- Gen and Mel share a room, Akilah and Mari share a room. Jackie really wanted to share a room with Shauna but Shauna wanted some of her own space. They share a wall though and have a secret code to communicate through knocks. There is a bedroom set aside for if someone is feeling big and for some reason struggling to be in their little room - for instance sometimes Nat really doesn’t want to regress and will sleep in that room - but usually no one minds sleepin in their little room when they are big. Even though it’s technically a common room it’s pretty much dubbed as Tai and Van’s second bedroom because they are the ones in cg headspace most often. The two also share a room when they are regressed. Lottie has two rooms but this is because she regresses super young and needs a crib which she doesn’t like when she’s big.
- They have a chore chart! Every week the jobs are supposed to change but a lot of the girls have favourite chores and will try to trade with others. If someone is feeling particularly small or down, someone else will usually offer to take their chores. They also have a rewards chart! Everyone has their own goals they are working towards, and not everyone always knows what the others are. For example, Mel gets a sticker for telling Van or Tai when she needs to use the bathroom so they can take her but the others don’t know that because she’s embarrassed by it. They all do know what everyone else’s prize is at the end! Some goals get smaller prizes like lollipops or getting to pick the weekly movie, and some have bigger prizes like going to the zoo or getting new toy!
- Weekly Friday movie night! Everyone puts a movie (or show which they’ll watch a couple episodes of) in a hat (Melissa’s) and whichever one gets picked they all watch together. They take it in turns to pick what take out they order.
- They have two big cars and everyone has set sheeting spots (subject to change slightly depending on who is big and who is little)
- Fights are common, not usually ever anything big, just little squabbles which tend to be blown out of proportion because of so many big emotions. There is a calm down corner in the living room, but Shauna and Mari have separate spots because they are known to be more physical with each other when they are mad.
- They have a big treehouse, with a tire swing underneath. There are lots of competitions to see who can climb up without using the ladder fastest. Mel uses it to hide in a lot, Shauna likes to go and read up there, Lottie and Nat often go up together and climb onto the roof to look at the sky. Jackie likes to play house up there a lot, she doesn’t really like outside because dirt and bugs and just things that upset her sensory issues a lot, but she does like getting to play Mama.
- So many games of soccer and a lot of time training and doing drills. A soccer game is usually called whenever something big has happened that’s put everyone in a bad mood.
- Most of the girls are in therapy after everything that happened in the wilderness (and for some of them, before). Lottie has a session every week, she’s probably the one who put duo the least fight about it because she knows the other option (her parents sending her to Switzerland) is much worse. Jackie sees a doctor about once a month, for a while when she was really struggling with food she had to see a specialist for eating. disorders as well but she hated him. She doesn’t mind her new doctor. Nat is almost always regressed after her sessions and it’s never pleasant for her, she spends a lot of time hiding and favouring the others. Lottie suggests they try something else but Nat admits that she thinks it is actually helping she just needs time to decompress after. Van is very reluctant to admit she needs it and only goes for a few months but says it did help.
- A lot of them also take medication, whether that’s for mental health or a condition theu picked up in the wilderness. They each have a specific colour pill organiser that sits in a drawer in the kitchen and whoever is in charge of cleaning up after breakfast that morning has to check after that they are all empty for that day. Lottie when regressed is too young to take them herself so someone will help them and Jackie just straight up refuses to swallow pills so she needs hers crushed up into powder in her strawberry yogurt.
- There are definitely girls who are very much ring leaders when regressed. Jackie, Van, Tai and Shauna tend to almost always have someone trailing around to play with them.
- A few of the littles struggle with accidents but have very different feelings about them. Lottie gets anxious and embarrassed of it if she’s feeling older but usually she’s too young to care or be expected not to. She really just doesn’t have much awareness of what her body is trying to tell her ever, in other ways as-well like she’ll fall and bump her head then get straight back up and keep running because she’s too focused on catching the firefly to think about if her head might hurt. She has a change table in her room and wears diapers pretty much the whole time she’s regressed. Nat wets the bed because of trauma and when she’s super little, she wears pull-ups to bed. She doesn’t like talking about it but isn’t too embarrassed, not like Jackie or Mel. Jackie wets the bed but no one can talk about it. She gets defensive and mean and overwhelmed if they try. She uses pull-ups which Nat gave her though theu never talk about it. Mel has pretty frequent accidents at day and night. She’s super anxious and struggles to ask to go to the bathroom or excuse herself from the dinner table. Sometimes she’s so anxious she just can’t get up off the couch because someone might look at her. She is very ashamed of her accidents and almost always will only accept help from Van.
- There are alphabet letters on the fridge which notes (often passive aggressive on Shauna’s behalf) are left. It’s a good way of communicating when sometimes people are struggling for words.
- There’s a park down the road that they visit often, it has a little playground and a big oval and a dog park.
- A lot of the little’s love riding their bikes! Mari, Jackie and Gen in particular are big fans of their bikes! Mel and Van have skateboards (Mel taught Van how to skate because her brothers taught her growing up and Van had always wanted to try)
- Lottie likes to leave little post it notes around the house. It started as a way of remembering things and what’s real and what’s not, and people started leaving notes for her to remind her. Eventually she starts to just leave little reminders for the others of how much she loves and cares about them - especially if she knows someone is having a bad day.

Okay listen, what I love about BTD kid au is that Strade, rire, & sano were friends ever since childhood. I mean it's adorable if you actually think about it 😂
I do have a headcannon story that I would like to tell you all so feel free to read this!
I still don't know how the three met, it's kind of like that one trio where they don't even know how they met each other in the first place so let's just go with that. But I'd figured it would go something like this.
Story: Strade was an only child and had no friends due to his behavior. He met sano when he was around probably 6-7 who was stuck in a pond with ropes around his tail (Sano). Strade upon seeing a young boy with a snake tail, was curious and decided to help him...but the two ended up in the rope and it took 2 hours for them to get themselves free. Strade and sano became friends after that and strade didn't even bother asking about why sano had a tail.
The next part is where the two met rire which is kind of in a weird way. Strade got home from his kindergarten and decided to play with sano as the two were close, sano has an idea to summon a demon, which wasn't normal for a child to say that but hey, he's a naga demon so what do you expect? Anyway, they summoned a demon and you might be asking how and why they did it. Well one; They were pretty dumb kids and also just curious, two; Sano found rire's 'symbol' online for odd reasons and decided to try it. They successfully summoned kid rire but...they interrupted his tea time which made the demon prince angry (Btw he's a prince because his family is still alive, so he ain't the demon king yet). After a full on rampage that goes on for about a few hours, they were able to come into an agreement to become friends.
Childhood Moments: Strade, Rire, & Sano would build their own treehouse in their old neighborhood where they used to live, and they would make the treehouse pretty big. Of course the three had their own rooms and storage for their own stuff, by this time strade had an old camcorder, so he used it to create videos and/or memories of their childhood.
The three would go on adventures and weird places or even terrifying ones. Strades parents never really paid any attention to him so they didn't care if he left the house. Strade likes to draw or doodle in his free time, so he draws a lot of art of him, rire and sano. Sano and strade likes to pull pranks on rire. For example one time, they did a water bucket challenge but instead of it being normal cold water, it was holy water which burned poor kid rire skin. Of course he was not happy, but don't worry...he got his revenge.
Another childhood memory is that the three would occasionally watch horror films like slasher films. Especially paranormal activity, every time there is a demon or spirit that is possessing a person, sano and strade were pretty much scared while rire happily watches the scene. BUTTTT, when it comes to the exorcist scenes...Rire would immediately hold his friends with his tentacles while hiding behind them😂😂 (inspo from the photo above)
Another time, sano and strade did a research and they read that in old Russian ancient times, there used to be a saying that brownies could scare off evil spirits or demons. And so...they tried it on rire, the results did not disappoint them. The moment they bought a brownie cake and placed it on the table in front of rire...the poor boy disappeared. Which confused the two at first, but then they realized it actually works! Rire would stay in hell until he knows for sure, that the brownies were gone.
Treehouse: The treehouse that they built in the forest is still there standing stable till this day, and that treehouse holds a lot of childhood memory. Strade Sano & Rire would often sleep in that treehouse as their comfort zone and also since it's the place they mostly hang out in. They carved their names on the treehouse door, something like this; "LR+SK+S" Which obviously means in order; "Lucien Rire+Sano Kojima+Strade". Of course soon strade had to move out of his old town and so did sano and rire. They left their old treehouse but kept their stuff there.
Present: Whenever Y/N is free they sometimes go to the Kojima brothers house just to hangout or sleep over. One day they stumbled upon an old photo of the main trio. Rire in the center, strade on his left side and sano on his right side. The photo looked like it was taken a few years back and Y/N was able to open the frame and found a note attached to the back of the photo which had coordinates, which if your guessing correctly; Leads to their old treehouse. Akira & Y/N visited that place and found the treehouse with all of their stuff still there in the same places where they left it. And if they went all the way to the back, they would find a wooden box container which is filled with many cassette tapes and writing of dates. Strade would record those childhood videos and put them on cassette tapes so there was a lot of them. Of course, Y/N & Akira ended up watching some of the videos in the end and didn't bother telling sano, strade, or rire.
Anyway that's pretty much my version of the BTD main trio kid AU. Let me now which one should I do next down below here ⬇️⬇️⬇️
(Btw, credits to the art above belongs to @darqx)

the gift of the magi/childhood friends to lovers au
they'd always gifted each other small things.
wedgies in pre-k for example, when alex thought the boy with blue eyes didn't like him. this made alex not like him back.
until alex ran out of lunch money one week, and henry refused to eat his own meal unless alex agreed to eat half with him.
after that, alex was determined to outdo him.
alex drew him a picture about all the times he beat henry at tag.
henry wrote a poem about how he much he'd loved christmas with the claremonts and the diazes. he read it to alex in front of their entire class.
it rhymed perfectly and everything.
alex made him a sand castle that was fit for a prince. henry made him a miniature replica of the treehouse in alex's backyard.
alex made him flower crowns. he liked how they made henry turn pink, matching the petals in his soft golden hair.
henry made alex feel so so warm, always.
as alex got older he realized how much he wanted to give henry things that he couldn't afford. a nice leather-bound journal. fancy pens for henry to write with. first editions of all his favorite books.
things, alex understood, that henry mostly already had. things henry didn't need alex for.
away for summer camp one year, alex had an idea.
he'd recently lost the key to his childhood home, the one from before his parents had split. so he took the chain he didn't need anymore and had it melted down: reshaped, into a small ring engraved with a cursive 'a' to match henry's 'h' on his.
that way, the next time they were apart, they could still have something of each other. something that belonged to them.
alex was so fucking nervous when he went over to henry's with his gift. what if henry didn't want to exchange rings with him?
what if henry didn't feel the same way he did?
when alex took a deep breath and handed it over, henry got a look on his face that made alex's heart sink.
and then henry took alex's hand. he pressed a small gold key into his palm.
henry, alex realized, was no longer wearing his ring.
"it's no replacement for the one you lost," said henry. "but i wanted you to know that you've a home in me too. only," henry looked sad again, "now you've no chain to wear it on."
"it's okay." alex squeezed henry's hand. "i already have everything i want."
watery-eyed, smiling, henry put on his new ring engraved with an 'a' and said, "so do i."
"i know it's no replacement either," said alex.
"no," said henry. "it's infinitely better."
it was in fact the second-best gift henry ever received, he told alex later.
because the best came immediately after, when alex took henry's face into his hands and kissed him for the very first time.

⊹ Dad! Chris
Tumblr media
。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。。・:*˚:✧。
Dad! Chris Who is a boy dad
Dad! Chris who always watching from the sidelines, letting his son explore but stepping in if things get too wild.
Dad! Chris who wrestling matches on the couch? Check. Tickling battles? Check. Play-fighting until someone (usually Chris) gets "accidentally" hit too hard? Absolutely.
Dad! Chris who doesn’t believe in coddling too much—if his son falls, he’ll dust him off and say, “You got this, buddy.” But if it’s really bad? Yeah, he’ll scoop him up immediately and pretend he wasn’t panicking.
Dad! Chris who is at every game, yelling too loudly from the stands and pretending not to tear up when his kid scores or improves.
Dad! Chris Who didn't want to be a father but when he found out you were pregnant he cried with emotion, he couldn't wait to be able to tell everyone and began to prepare for his baby, and now he wants another one.
Dad! Chris who is the dad who’ll spend hours helping his son build a treehouse, fix a bike, or repair a broken toy, even if he has no idea what he’s doing, he’ll figure it out because Dad Mode is real.
Dad! Chris who leads by example—showing his son that strength isn’t just about being tough, but also about kindness, responsibility, and respect. “Being strong doesn’t mean never crying. It means knowing when to stand up and when to let people in.”
Dad! Chris who guilty of letting his son do things they probably shouldn’t, like staying up too late watching movies or eating too much junk food. “Okay, we’ll clean this up before Mom gets home. It’s our little secret.”
Dad! Chris who whether his kid wants to be an athlete, an artist, or a scientist, Chris is all in. He never misses a big moment, always ready with a proud smile, a pat on the back, and a classic: “That’s my boy.”

X-Men #16 review
AKA Magneto takes dexies
Fuck me, this book has had 16 issues, though if you asked me for an elevator pitch I'd have to say 'problems keep happening, except in the snow.' This latest snow problem arc feels like it's picking up the pace, but it covers maybe 5 minutes of their life. It's exciting - fake X-Men, a fight with bad guys, and Magneto taking drugs - but you can only run on 90/10 setup/payoff for so long before it drags. If nothing else, hot Magneto is back and full of drugs! 💊🧲
Tumblr media
'Nuh uh, it's MY treehouse.'
Last issue ended with Cassandra Nova whispering in a new mutant's ear and these jerkoffs showing to rumble. The Santo Marco six, 3K mutants we last saw fifteen issues ago. As I said then, it's great that the 3K plot is starting to move but so much has happened since then that I forgot why anyone cares. This issue spends a fair amount of time basically reintroducing them because I'd imagine most readers are like Temper - 'who?' That's taking a little too long to get back to them IMO - this isn't the X-Files where the breadcrumbs are a given. Anyway, they want to be the X-Men for some reason, so the two teams fight. IDK why Scott wouldn't offer them a job interview or something, he looks like a big mean jerk. Yeah, I said it!
Tumblr media
Magik and Juggernaut the bash bros are all about it, amping up their previous blood knight act. Cain no shit makes a Jack and the Beanstalk reference but it doesn't really land. Scott tries to remind his violent kids that the Twin is rampaging but they don't hear. The Twin seems like their heart just isn't in it as Cassandra Nova eggs them on. Getting huge Chuck vibes from her lol.
It's a bit jarring for Scott to shut the fake X-Men down so totally then be like 'wait, the twin.' He knows Magik wants their heads and that she and Cain are like this now. He set the example by being standoffish, what did he think would happen? I think I'm still hoping we'll follow up on Scott's mental health issues, but I guess Logan cured him with stabbing and I'm looking for something that isn't there. Still, with two psychics on the team it's something that could have been addressed - even if it's 'I'm doing okay right now thanks.' Leaving any longer to follow up and it'll feel like... round two of a fight from fifteen issues ago. Significant, but wayyyy too long between beers.
Tumblr media
Beast calling Mags a shit father is 👌👌👌
Cyke multitasks like a champ and mobilises the factory crew. Mags and Beast hinted at a prosthetic for the ailing elder mutant last issue, though he looks a lot fucking healthier right now. I've been very open about my extreme distaste for R-LDS, and that hasn't changed. Dexies. Dextroamphetamine-x, so mutant dexies - as a temporary solution is ridiculous and pretty funny. Beast just whipping up drugs is becoming a regular enough thing, but dexies, really? Mutant ADD medication? It makes R-LDS look silly-er. I'll come back to this in a separate post for now let's enjoy Magneto shooting up speed and see what it does.
Tumblr media
Wooooo! Tight, tight, tight tight tight!
HAHA! My dude is amped up, levitating syringes and billowing his cape. Hook this man up with an IV. I hesitate to say 'Magneto is back' but it is nice to see the Master of Magnetism flex like that. Now go throw some vehicles around, old man. I know you want to.
Not sure what to make of Beast's facial expression there. We can cross 'uncomplicated joy' off the list, that's for sure. Maybe 'should I really be giving Magneto amphetamines? I was in the Defenders, man.' Yes, he should. Hook the whole squad up.
Tumblr media
Maybe not Magik...
SPLASH PAGE! Scott orders Psylocke to take out the speedster first, but I think he's been hanging around Hank too much. 'Accelerated physiology' - Scott deserves that knockdown. The action is bombastic and kinetic with handy visual keys to show who what kind of power and how it interacts with our A team. That's a counterbalance to the sheer busyness of the scenes , though I'm not sure it's enough. The pop cartoon style clashes a little with the cinematic panels they're going for here, showing most of the 'what' in a vacuum.
Tumblr media
As a whole I find it difficult to tell where each respective exchange is happening. Following the speedster tells a coherent linear narrative, at least - taking out Scott, struggling with Psylocke and handing off to The Vore, then getting blasted by Scott. I wonder where Piper, Xorn, and Quentin are?
Tumblr media
Woof! If these clowns want to be X-Men they need better banter. Anyone shouting 'The Juice is loose' in battle deserves to get pounded, FR. Honestly, everyone looks like they're having fun, not like they're looking to kill each other. It's very flashy but I feel like the guy in the bottom left panel - '?' There's the feeling that this fight is not intended to have a conclusion, that it's a showcase for design and dynamics. It's possible to have both, I'm sure of it. Somebody get hurt!
Tumblr media
Oh bloody hell the X-Men are getting in on it too, with the embarrassing one liners. I do like cosmic energy guy's design though. Is their leader dabbing? Cassandra Nova must be so embarrassed. I guess THE VORE didn't eat Psylocke's brain or whatever. The unserious vibes the fight carries makes sense considering they're trying to stall the X-Men, but it pulls me out the moment and it makes the X-Men look like chumps. Get a handle on your guys and lead, Scotty!
Tumblr media
There we go. This guy - I'm going to call him Bighorns - accepts the chance to regroup when Scott calls it. They want to be X-Men, apparently. With that 'Here Comes Tomorrow' you might even say they want to be New X-Men. There's a set-up for an ideological discussion here - I wonder if they'll go for it. Valid points are being made, kinda. Only one team works for the genocide lady who treats people like lab rats, but the X-Men have mile-wide chinks in their armour to call out. I doubt it, but you never know.
Tumblr media
While the action figures have been smashing into each other, The Twin has reached the town. Magneto is dexied up, controlling the Wild Sentinel he and Scott trashed before the series started. That's where we end - with the two teams talking but inherently opposed and Magneto the only thing in between Merle and destruction. Piper around somewhere, Quentin is presumably still knocked out, and Xorn is ... where did he go? Looking for Quentin still, I guess?
In the introduction I flagged the pacing as illusively slow, and looking at this issue as well as zooming out I think it sticks out more than ever. At the end of last issue the Twin was heading for the town, the two X-Men teams were having a tense face-off, while Xorn searched for Quentin off panel. At the end of the issue the X-Men have said hello, the Twin walked a few hundred meters, and Mags took some medication.
He amped up but hasn't actually done anything. Nobody has, really. A 12 mutant brawl happened but nobody's hurt and they're back to where they started. There's just a hint of payoff here, a teaspoonful - enough to taste the flavour but not very filling. Staying on the Magneto example - #15 showed him asking for medication, #16 he took it and did a pose, and #17 presumably he'll interact with The Twin. Or maybe not. The twin, on the other hand, took 3 issues to walk to town. She stopped and started a lot, but it was in service of the choice 'destroy town Y/N?' She keeps choosing yes, urged on by Cassandra Nova, but we know that Merle isn't getting destroyed. They're probably not going to kill a child either, and that's a source of tension at least.
I'm not sure if it will be any better in the trade without serious editing. The start and end of each issue bleed into each other, so it's going to feel downright repetitive. At least we're getting further away from Raid and Chuck Hunt with every step, I just wish they'd pick up the pace. The line work is tight as always, the inks pop - contrasting brightly off the snowy backdrop, each character model is distinct and dynamic - but the choreography and blocking was flat for me. Being able to tell where people are in relation to each other is crucial, and the fight looked like the shadow of fierce without the sincerity.
I'd recommend it for the Magneto content alone, but everything tastes great when you're starving. I'm sympathetic to the rigor of double shipping in a hostile creative environment, but it's been sixteen issues. There's been bursts of brilliance like the Lundquist and Scott scenes but too much padding and repetition. The best scenes shine brightly, so it's not a talent deficit. It'd be nice to have a few excellent issues consecutively, you know? I feel like I say that, or something like it, every review. Hmm, I don't want to be repetitive, let's check out how my peers in X-Men reviewing are handling it.
...
Most sites stopped reviewing this book halfway through Raid on Graymalkin - even AIPT, who review everything positively. Looks like I'm on my own there. Fuck it - adjectiveless X-Men is fun enough - I just know that the team can do better. Thanks for reading.

am i the only one getting sick of everyone trying to prove that all the pcs (namely evan and k) are secretly super shallow and all terrible friends???
evan gave vague examples for the tree house, k’s pink, sam’s sparkle, etc. because he, in that moment wasnt actually planning the treehouse!!!! he was just explaining his train of to jammer in that moment. he chose demons for himself and sports for jammer you know that right???
k is desperate to know how to fix things around them, because american culture, whether you are raised catholic or not, instills a deep need for penance!!! he feels the need to fix things that he feels like are his fault, whether they are or not!!
how to be a person and a good friend doesn’t come naturally to these two because of the ways they grew up and socialized. it is not a moral failing and one off comments that you find distasteful are not signs that they are bad friends.

okay not to waste energy being mad about the minecraft movie of all things but I am actually kind of heartbroken by how cynical it feels.
for example, making the creatures that inhabit the world offputting is so indicative of the underlying attitude the film seems to be taking to me. how many millions of minecraft animals, despite being pixels and code, have been genuinely loved by players around the world?
minecraft, despite everything it’s associated with these days, is incredibly earnest in a way that I feel few properties are these days… and genuinely one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. in its surprisingly melancholic moments in a solo survival world. in the laughs it’s given those far apart from beloved friends, allowing them to be roommates in a beautiful forest cottage or a volcanic fortress or a treehouse palace they’ve built together when thousands of miles apart. in the things people working alone and together have made of it- libraries of banned books made accessible through the medium of the game, scale models of worlds real and fictional, redstone machines with intricate circuitry and incredible intelligence and diligence behind them, in the friendships forged in the pursuit of these creations.
minecraft is collaborative and creative and contemplative in a way few games can be. minecraft, to those who have ‘beaten,’ it, says: everything you need is within you, the darkness you fight is within you, the light you seek is within you, you are not alone, not separate from every other thing, you are the universe tasting itself, talking to itself, reading its own code.
minecraft, when so many games are about escaping from yourself, is about connection with your self, your creativity, the plants and earth and animals and structures around you, the people around you.
for it to be, in this context, a self-referential, debasing cash grab, is not a surprise to me but does feel like a disservice to what the heart of this game is, and symptomatic of a wider trend in a storytelling climate increasingly dominated by spin-offs and reboots and tie-ins and remakes. the writers could have had the courage not to break the fourth wall, not to point and laugh and decry the silly memeable ‘get a load of this guy,’ block game, (and by extension ridicule themselves,) but I understand. it’s the same instinct to make the self-effacing joke before you can be laughed at by others for showing your honest self, to cringe from the vulnerability earnesty demands. that’s fine. personally- and I’m probably not alone- I just wish it wasn’t this game.

I do think this last episode was the perfect example of how rushed this season has been though.
Like Kelvin has been sulking in his treehouse for DAYS feeling shitty about himself and a minute long conversation is enough to completely change his mind and boost his self-esteem? I realize his siblings' opinions mean a lot to him, but that was ridiculously fast.
And when he wins, he walks off stage and literally 30 seconds later OH YOU WON, like don't they need to count votes or whatever? Even a minute or two longer? There are so many missed opportunities for more fleshed out conversations. Not just jumping from "this is meaningless" to "oh I won" in 10 seconds.
And the thing with Pontius and Gideon, like they hate each other and then Gideon does some skateboarding and suddenly Pontius is like, "Oh right, you're actually cool!" Didn't you miss a few steps there? Arc resolved orrrrr?
I don't know why these episodes are so rushed. Why are they so short? Even an extra 10 minutes on the clock would fix that.

Common Questions
What is antisemitism?
"Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities." IHRA, International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance
Antisemitism is spelled as one word, without the dash, as it is not bigotry against all Semites (Arabs + Jews), it is solely about Jews.
Is antisemitism the same as antizionism?
The 3-Ds of antisemitism are Demonization, Delegitimization and Double-Standards. If your criticism of Israel doesn't apply to any other country, if the way you talk about Israelis doesn't match how you talk about Russians, Iranians, Chinese, etc. then it is antisemitism.
What antisemitism is not
Criticism of Israel on its own (i.e. crimes, gov't, policies)
Palestinian self-determination
Palestinian flags, pride, culture
Criticism of religious Judaism (i.e. trauma, harm)
Is accusing Arabs/Muslims of antisemitism racist/Islamophobic?
It is racist to accuse Arabs of being de facto antisemites.
It is racist to presume Arabs are all Muslim as well.
It is not racist to acknowledge that Islam is foundationally taken from Jewish texts and histories, which have been misinterpreted and abused to justify antisemitic violence. It is not racist to hold Islam accountable for the imperialism that pervades its evangelical arm.
Just like it isn't racist to do the same for Christianity. And we hold this standard for Judaism as well. Just like it isn't antisemitic to criticize the harms that Jewish religion has caused for others (such as LGBT), it isn't Islamophobic to do the same.
How prevalent is antisemitism?
It's baked-in to two of the world's major religions, Christianity and Islam. Unfortunately that means antisemitism is the de facto sentiment of a majority of the world's population. Antisemitism is one of the oldest, longest hatreds. That means we are often subjected to historical revisionism, such as denying the severity of the Holocaust, or publishing encyclopedias, textbooks, as "information" with clearly antisemitic content pasted over real events.
A good example is a look at the Wikipedia article for what Zionism is.
This clearly shows that Wikipedia is being subjected to antisemitic historical revisionism.
What is the alt-left?
We will use the BITE model for indoctrination as popularized by Steven Hassan in Combating Cult Mind Control. BITE stands for Behavior, Information, Thought, Emotion. The most common form of indoctrination is called a thought-terminating cliche, or a fallacy-fallacy.
For example:
P1: "Israel is committing genocide!"
P2: "How many people have Russia killed so far"
P1: "500,000"
P2: "Do you think Russia is committing genocide?
Should we eject Putin from the UNSC?"
P1: "That's whataboutism!"
Resist this "whatabousim" idea, as it is designed to terminate all objections to clear hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is different than whataboutism, because it is a double standard, one of the 3-Ds of antisemitism.
So what is Zionism?
Zionism is the acknowledgment that Jews are the indigenous population of Israel, who have a right to self-determination in their homeland. Zionism is extremely broad. Some people don't even require Israel to be the Jewish country (their goal is simply safety and community for Jews world-wide, in Some Place), but this is a more secular argument.
Some people believe Zionism is only applicable to Jews (i.e. you cannot call yourself a Zionist if you are not a Jew), others are OK with goyim using the term as well. You'll have to feel that out, as both sides of the equation have a right to exist. Personally I use Zionism in as broad a definition as possible, so it does include non-Jews, with the exception of Messianic Christians, and evangelical hoo-hah.
When you're discussing Zionism with a Jew, especially as a non-Jew, you need to listen to what they describe Zionism as. It is de-legitimizing (another of the 3-Ds) to claim that Jews can't be trusted to point out antisemitic rhetoric. Jews define antisemitism, and we define Zionism. They are words about us, for us.
In some cases people will say wrong dumb shit, so refer back to the first part of what antisemitism isn't. E.g. if someone (even a fellow Jew) says holding a Palestinian flag is antisemitic, they are actually being antisemitic themselves.
Is goy a slur?
No, in fact the term "gentile" was popularized by the KKK. Gentile is based off of a Christian scholar's interpretation of the term goy (Saint Jerome). Goy simply means "nations", as in non-Jewish people. Goyim/goy is not a slur. Some people might use it derogatorily, the same way Black people might speak negatively about white folks who have been racist to them.
It's still not a slur. We prefer to use goy because it is our word, we like it, and it doesn't have a history of being lobbed at us by mask-wearing wizard KKK freaks. Terms like "zio", "zionazi" etc are also slurs developed by David Duke.
You're a conservative who believes in prison abolition and social justice blah khadl blargo de glarm hlblehgah?
Conservative Judaism is a progressive, egalitarian denomination of Judaism. We believe in conserving the spirit of the Torah, but produce adaptive Responsa as we gain more scientific and social understanding. it is not Republican/political conservatism.
Why do you post all these gibberish asks by idiots?
That's actually the reason I am here! To do outreach to people who are brainrotted. I was an extreme kid. I was indoctrinated into a violent armed gang at age 8, and we had a lot of the same ideology.
Violence is cool, and our enemies should die and be hurt, brutality should be rewarded, etc. I want to dismantle this pipeline. I want to use my experiences to be a force for good, because that gives meaning to my life.
But I get that it's annoying to constantly read bullshit, so you don't have to follow me!
Is Israel committing genocide?
As it stands now, I'm keeping an eye on things. The simplest opinion I have is that we don't have any real data to work with, so we can't make conclusions. But we do have testimonies, believable ones, from people who were there and who are documenting the Likud war crimes.
So far, there is not conclusive proof that Israel is committing genocide in a systematic way. Some Israeli politicians are saying genocidal rhetoric, (one egregious piece of evidence is Halevi's statements that bombing Gazan civilian areas would "soften the battlefield," which is an open statement he made to media, this would mean he supports giving orders to deliberately target civilian areas - this is genocidal!) but this is separate from genocidal actions.
It's possible the answer to this question will change to yes and I have always been open about that. And if it does become yes, I will say yes.
