My take on Kotoko as a morally gray person, about a morally gray character who thinks in black and white

first of all, i absolutely love this woman, so all of this comes from a kotoko enjoyer, but when talking about canon i can not turn the blind eye to the wrongs she has done. i will talk about my perception of her murder, of her as a character and about her beating up the guilty prisoners (i will put this emoji 🐺 when i jump subjects just to keep it organized)

this next phrase is my personal take, i know some will disagree with me and thats okay, which also works as a tl;dr:

Kotoko didnt do anything wrong outside the prison, but she did wrong inside of it

i know beating up people isnt actually good, but she did research upon research to get to the bottom of the cases she was investigating and found the culprits this way. "but she could've brought them upon justice" and you arent wrong about that, but the victim she actually murdered, even when his identity was revealed to the public, the law didnt bring justice upon him.

her victim was a child murderer, he had already killed 10 girls in 2 years, but even then, he was still free because of his father’s position of power. 

then we have her other victim, the man she beat up and sent to the hospital

there are a couple articles dedicated to this one. but a quick run down: the man, Mikio Oshii, was wanted for theft and assault, having tricked at least 2 or 3 elderly people, pretending to be a bank employee, and convincing them to hand over cash, he pushed one of his victims, fracturing her ankle. 

then we have the article about Kotoko’s assault. again a quick run down: someone heard screaming and found a man lying on the ground, who had lost consciousness after being beaten up, and was taken to the hospital. the police suspects a man (kotoko was wearing men’s sneakers and covering herself up). the victim was wanted for theft and assault charges and was Mikio Oshii.

further proving that she was aiming at people who prayed on the weak, she had good intentions (at least at first), and we also have the facts that she was trying to go through the lawful(?) path at first 

she was studying law, showing us that she genuinely believed her cause, bringing justice to the world and protecting the innocent, or “weaklings” as she calls them, more on that later.  that she was gonna try and go for the morally correct route, but what changed? what is that thing she “wants to do”? i hope we get to see her reasoning on the next trial. for now i agree with the theory that says that her or her family was victim of someone like the guy that was above law for having money and a father with a position of power. showing her the flaws of the law/justice system and thus taking matters into her own hands.

🐺 i personally believe that there are some people who dont deserve second chances, like pedos and rapists, and like the man kotoko murdered, between others. so this is why i forgive her from her crimes. she did proper research, she is passionate about it, she wants to protect the weak, or thats what she tries to convince herself of, because this brings me to my next point

she does have those violent tendencies, and she enjoys them

this is from the t1 trailer, people suspect this were phrases they said after their murders. so i think there is a possibility that while she was trying to convince herself that her actions were for justice, to try and protect the weak, and i dont doubt that that was where it came from at first, she ended up doing it out of personal enjoyment.

i once read that “if you do a good deed because you want to do it, it means that you arent a good person. to be a good person you need to do good deeds without wanting something in return” meaning that you should be uninterested on even the satisfaccion of said deed. this is a phrase that i absolutely hate and dont agree with, but i think it applies in here. kotoko was trying to do something “good” (morality is on the bearer’s eyes) by bringing to justice people who kept escaping it, by taking revenge for those weaklings she so desperately wants to protect, and while thats her main motivation, she also does it because she wants to.

i believe my girl has a thirst for power. she is self righteous, the way she refers to the people she wants to protect as “weaklings” its like shes putting them down in some way, the way on her VD she just wants to keep rambling about her theories, the way she inserted herself on Mikoto’s interrogation, the way she just assumes Es’ intentions and doesnt seem to accept when they call her out on it. she doesnt listen to others at all and once her mind is set on something, there is nothing that can move her from there. she isnt a good person…. but also, she isnt a bad person, and i feel that the fandom forgets those two statements can coexist. even if she sees herself as a saint, and firmly believes that she did nothing wrong, thats because

🐺 her world view is black and white. and this is why while i condone her actions on her murder, i do not condone her actions of beating up the guilty prisoners.

a lot of the prisoners have a black and white morality, heck, milgram itself as a system IS black and white. and from what i’ve read, a lot of the fandom also thinks in black and white. all of which i find extremely… interesting…. tbf its the nd majority vote game about nd murderers on the nd website, so makes sense (im half joking, sorry)

kotoko attacked the guilty prisoners because thats what she had been doing, and thats what she got voted innocent for on t1 (i wasnt around). but no one told her to do that, she acted on her own, she misinterpreted her judgment and forced her opinions and methods on others, claiming it were Es’, without their knowledge and without ours.

as a side note, when i first got into the fandom, i found surprising to see that kotoko was inno and fuuta was guilty on t1, since from my perspective their crimes are basically the same, they both exposed and harrowed “bad” people.

i make a lot of emphasis on black and white thinking, since its something im familiarized with, for example lets talk Amane since its her trial is still going

she is the type of girl who will correct other’s mistakes, who will call them out and try to fix them so that the others can be right, like her. her truth is absolute and even when it flails, she stands her ground and proceeds to believe in herself and her views of the world. in what i said, you could re read that and it would also apply to kotoko, and just like her, Amane also convinced herself of doing something she wanted to do by telling herself it was the right thing to do. kotoko’s “protecting the weaklings” directly translates to amane’s “punishing her mother for her sins (hurting the cat)”. so while in both cases there were hidden feelings, something tells me neither of the girls knew about their own ulterior motives, thats how well they convinced themselves.

people who think in black and white just see it as it is, right or wrong, left or right, green or blue, there is no other choice but those two. and from my personal experiences with myself and with others, its something you end up applying in almost every aspect of your life and its really difficult to change up this way of thinking. beginning to see the grays of the world and its other options its not an easy task without some proper help

overall, i dont believe she was right for hurting the guilty prisoners, and fuuta losing his eye because of her gives me a horrible gut feeling. overall, it also ties on her need for power, since she firmly believes shes Es’ “fang”, thus reducing herself a weapon for justice, not implementing her own judgment anymore, but someone else’s, ours, which my problem with her actions in this scenario. i firmly believe that if outside the prison she had came across mahiru or fuuta, she wouldn’t have attacked them, but  after her t1 inno, and getting her ideals supported, her beliefs became radical, and now shes going based on our ideals, our judgments, our right or wrong, our black and white morality, MILGRAM’s black and white morality.

🐺 im still a kotoko inno truther, and i love her, shes my favorite character. but i dont expect her to get innocent this trial, as she did wrong. i dont want to say it was our fault that she harmed the other prisoners, since we had no way of knowing this would happen. in retrospect we can say whatever we want, but none of us can read the future. 

i dont even have a real argument on why you should vote her innocent “shes pretty” is not good enough lmao… but who knows, maybe we will see something that makes her worthy of an inno vote on her second trial a few months from now (not counting on it, probably wont be enough)

in the end i wrote this because im really passionate about this character and her black and white views on the world (shes so intense). and because this beautiful person @archivalofsins told me to "keep talking about kotoko" and i have zero self control regarding this fictional woman.

🐺 i believe with the help of a third party, someone who could act as a moral compass to her and could teach her that the world has more colors, more choices, and if she actually learns about this, she would end up being an amazing thing. 

also, if the theory about her being an accomplice of the serial killer turns out to be true, i will puke and cry :)

“Cramps”

So you’ve been on your period for a couple days now and your cramps have gotten worse and worse. Hello Anon!! Wow that was so long and I just woke up but I love seeing people that passionate, I’m the same about what I love (Gemini moon 8H you know 😂)… so!! I 100% agree with you. To be honest this is what I thought:

His spouse IS def younger than him. I don’t wanna make assumptions about the age gap because we can’t really be that precise until it really happens. But already seeing so many signs she will be younger is already a good sign. So I wanted to say she is younger than him but the theory could go two ways: 1. she could appear extremely young compared to her age because it happened to some people already! For ex, I noticed people with cancer placement have these kind of experiences in their life, and his Personal DC is in Cancer so it wouldn’t shock if she had this.

2. OR she could def be younger than him, like wow damn. Haha (I hope not the same as the people there because 39 yrs? JK?!)

thank god they made the destruction of preternia a big deal and didnt forgot about it like in the end of revelation, teela and lyn working together to try to fix it was a nice sub plot (but i still feel like they didnt know what exactly do to with Lyn at this point)

hordak snorting was too funny, motherboard and him being annoyed by skeletor speaking was funny af also skeletor bringing that present box was great

really liked adam and teela characters, THEY FINALE KISSED LIKE AJAJSJWJSJ it was cute to see them being all flirty and embarrassed, all of their scenes together are adorable, i liked how teela could experience new things. The only thing that bothers me is how good at magic she is in such short time but ok! glad to see more adam but i feel like they could have done a little more with his personal thoughts especially related to his family secrets drama and skeletor being his uncle all this time, also he acts a little bit too innocent and naive for someone who fights skeletor for years now

i thought orko and gwildor was gonna be annoying at first but they had a fun dynamic to me

the focus on randor was a bit annoying, and they missed the opportunity to make adam conflicted about his dad hiding a big secret like he also did before, skeletor being part of his fam, their final battle was boring...

Gabriel vs Adrinette

Not that it isn't the expected Fandom reaction to hate Gabriel to all hells for standing in between the Love Square becoming canon, but regarding the Gabriel is against Adrien being in a relationship with Marientte thing, people are right now kinda ignoring something major from “Perfection”

More (and ALOT of spoilers; also for “Emotions”) under the cut

The end credit scene of "Perfection" gave us a shockingly solid reason for that. This isnt “Chat Blanc” logic where Gabriel broke Adrinette up to akumatize Marinette, or simply for shits and giggles. After Gabriel akumatized Kagami in “Perfection” - where the akuma went into her ring - Tomoe literally walzed into Gabriel’s office, throwing hands and threatening him:

Alright, first of all: HELL YES Tomoe, good on you for immediately defending your daughters safety and life after Gabriel carelessly endangered Kagami’s EXISTENCE. Again, the megakuma went into Kagami’s ring. If Kagami hadnt managed to break free of the akumatization herself (something Gabriel tried to STOP her from btw) through her friends wholesome love and care for her, then at some point Ladybug and Chat Noir might have found a way to break her akuma object and THAT would have fucking killed Kagami.

It doesnt matter how unlikely it was for that to happen, point still stands that Tomoe is 100% right. Gabriel endangered Kagami’s LIFE by akumatizing her like this. Tomoe going at his throat was justified because she is a mother looking out for her daughter.

BUT

This is not where the threat remained and you cant just ignore that going onwards:

The shot composition and the way Gabriels hand moves in the gif above pretty much speak for themselves because your eyes are automatically drawn to Gabriels wedding ring; and what that means should be ridiculously obvious at this point: Adrien.

Look, after “Perfection” and ESPECIALLY “Emotion” I dont care anymore how many layers deep in denial you still are about Adrien, Kagami and Félix being Sentihuman. If you still havent accepted that then this isnt the post for you, sorry. No offense, but I’m continuing. 

As I said, as justified as Tomoe 100% IS to go off on Gabriel for endangering Kagami, you cant just ignore that she then literally threatened to do the same under tighter terms. Tomoe didnt threaten to destroy Gabriel HIMSELF, reveal him to the public or straight up kill him as he almost did Kagami.

Tomoe countered the threat he posed to her daughters life by threatening Gabriel to kill ADRIEN, if Gabriel ever pulls something like this again or steps too far out of the line their contract created. Btw, probably this one from season 3 “Animaestro”:

(Funny how quite some people already guessed back then that his has something to do with an arranged marriage for Adrien and Kagami. If this is indeed the contract Tomoe is referring to, then that assumption years ago was correct!)

Adrien just like Kagami is an innocent child in their parents massive plan of power and control. Tomoe threatened to kill an innocent child, Gabriel’s child, and Gabriel took that bloody serious as he should as Adrien’s father:

In this conversation both Tomoe and Gabriel acted from their position and role as PARENTS.

As much as Gabriel is a fuck awful human being who deserves his comeuppance, no, Tomoe is not justified in lowering the worth of Adrien’s life and ENDING it as a punishment for Gabriel just because GABRIEL carelessly put Kagami in a position of life-threatening danger. Dont applaud Tomoe when she defended her daughter and then turn around and play deaf when she threatened the life of Gabriel’s son. Tomoes target should be GABRIEL and Gabriel ONLY.

But she didnt. Tomoe is the one with more power in her hands and she spoke the threat that if Gabriel doesnt/cant uphold his side of their contract she will make ADRIEN the price Gabriel has to pay.

Excuse me if I’m not just ignoring this because its inconvenient for the Love Square. It sucks that we dont have all the context bc Gloob refused to respect the chronological order, but as for now Gabriel isn't so fircely against Adrinette because hes a monster and hates his son’s happiness itself, the situation is ALOT more complicated than that.

And I’m pointing it out because I honestly didnt expect the show to not just make Gabriel an even bigger threat to the Love Square as he already was til now because of the same ol’ neglective and unreasonably harsh demands by principle that make Adrien miserable.

No, Gabriel has an ACTUAL reason for this now in s5. In the “Protection” trailer we already heard that Adrien and Kagami were basically “made for each other” from the start by their parents alliance and we saw that reinforced in “Emotion” by them being the King and Queen of the Diamond Ball (and apparently the main jewels of this creppy rich cult...)

Look, I'm not anywhere close to saying that Gabriel standing between the love square and now having it more and more out for Marinette as a civilian is even a fraction of GOOD (I shouldnt even need to state this but I know this fandom. Save is save.)

But I AM saying that among all the other things that have now made a 180 degrees turn for the season 5 narrative, the reasons and motivations for Gabriels abusive parenting have also changed to a different extreme direction that... you can actually understand from his perspective in these massively fucked up circumstances Gabriel himself has created on every level for his own son for the last 15 years and before Adrien was even born.

(this is in every way still on Gabriel, that's a base-line truth)

So if Adrien and Kagami are already promised to each other and Tomoe EXPECTS that Gabriel's side of the contract is upheld as promised - so Adrien being Gabriel's perfect heir and Kagami's future husband (same goes for Kagami) - then YES, Gabriel is not so fircely against Adrinette for no reason.

Cause as much as she would hate this in every way, Marinette Dupain-Cheng, her love and Adrien's growing feelings for her ARE currently a life-threatening factor putting a target on Adrien's head. Our love birds just dont KNOW that!

And that is in my opinion a much more interesting way to approach the season where Marinette and Adrien finally find each other. The love square is 100% in the right of course and the narrative treats it that way, but the prince's cruel father - the king - is not out here now having it out for his sons Knight/love just because he's a dick. The prince is already promised and the king was threatened by the other more powerful ruler - he gets his weaponry from and the prince is promised to their daughter - that if the prince isn't doing exactly what he is supposed to do then the king will receive his sons head on a spear.

Thats not something I have in me to pretend like Gabriel has no reason whatsoever to... not WANT.

The man doesnt want this son dead. No matter what the situation is or how Gabriel handles it, that... that parental instinct by itself I get and be honest, so do YOU.

100% still on the warmongering mad kings past and current actions and decisions - he put his prince in this position - but I can still absolutely get behind why the King now gets even more dangerous, overprotective and controlling and is against his son finding true love, when up til now the king HIMSELF has neglected and abused his son so much that the prince went out finding love and happiness elsewhere (Also, the prince has the damn humanright to live his own life, thank you very much)

Listening to his father less and less and escaping out of his grasp which formerly was “merely punishable disobedience” (if noticed), but NOW the kings neglect and abuse has lead to circumstances and behavior from his son that under these new heightened stakes are basically causing the prince to get/getting (himself) killed.

In my opinion, this is the best way the show could have handled this. And it completely caught me by surprise because at this point I didnt DARE to hope that the show would create circumstances of Gabriel standing between the love square that actually give the complexity of the Family Agreste story the justice they deserves. Gabriel Agreste doesnt have to be RIGHT or anything but the villain of the story to be an understandable but still cruel villain father. I love this. Fucking thank you!

But another reason why I love this, is because it tightens the noose Gabriel created for his families fate in “Destruction” - by cataclysming himself - so much further:

This was already a more than amazing upgrade for Gabriel’s and Nathalie’s villain motivations. No matter what was in s1-s4, the new stakes of “if we dont win, Adrien will loose us both and be all that's left of our family” simply ARE understandable and even sympathetic villain parent motivations.

Now, what is DONE with this for Gabriel and Nathalie respectively is a different question, but THIS reasoning is a worthy moral noose for a villain parent (both of them). THIS is a great family conflict and it was only made BETTER by Tomoe's threat in “Perfection”.

And it doesnt even paint Gabriel as anything BUT the villain of the story, who is the root of all of the horrible dangers/losses for which Adrien is now put in place and to be the one who has to pay for his father’s sins. Gabriel and even Nathalie is set up to escape the full brunt of the consequences of their actions by death. But what about Adrien when everything Agreste related goes to hell and he's the only one LEFT?

I’m not saying this is necessarily what’s also about to play out in Canon. These are the current STAKES of the Agreste Family because of Gabriel himself. But may I say, the situation was never more morally complex than right now.

I cant wait to see how much further the s5 Agreste story goes, this is AMAZING!

Kujou Sara deserves so much more love than she got, by both Mihoyo and the fandom at large. In most fanworks, Sara is reduced to either being just "an awkward potato uwu" for shipping purposes or the mean antagonistic lesbian if you need a villain. Her single consistant trait in canon is her undying loyalty to the Raiden Shogun.

Sara is so much more than that! Yes, she's loyal to the Shogun to a deathly fault, but it isn't her entire personality!

Does Ganyu get reduced down to her extreme loyalty to Rex Lapis? A little, yes, but not anywhere close to how Sara is! Ganyu gets to exist outside of her loyalty to Rex Lapis. Through her, we get to view the difference in culture of the Adepti and the culture of humanity. Ganyu has her relationships and interactions outside of her dedication to her god. Sara doesn't get that. We dont get to view any difference in culture between youkai and humanity. Sara doesnt get to have relationships outside of her dedication as the Raiden Shogun's general.

Sara is stuck in this box, always an extension of her god's will. She supposedly owes her very life to the Shogun due to her Vision. Sara has been conditioned from the very start of her human life to dedicate her everything to the Shogun's will. And let me be clear, this not Ei/Shogun anti stuff, I very much enjoy Ei and her story. But I wish that Sara's life didnt have to revolve one hundred percent around her god.

For the whole "awkward potato uwu" thing, I hate that. It's a thing I've noticed primarily in Kokosara fanworks (again, no hate on Kokosara, it's an amazing dynamic). But that is where I've mostly noticed this trend personally. Sara is portrayed as completely emotionally inept who gets flustered over the smallest things and is this "sweet innocent summer child". What? Huh? Kujou Sara? I refuse to believe she would get flustered oh-so-easily. She is a daughter of the Kujou clan, it is most likely there were people who attempted to court her because she is a noble lady! She knows about sex and flirting and shit. She's emotionally stunted because Takayuki is a bitch, she's not completely inept. She's the kind of person to completely dead face say the raunchiest things and continue on like nothing happened. She's not stupid.

I just. I can't get all my thoughts about Sara into complete words, so forgive me if I come off as harsh, that is not my intention. But gods above, I would kill for this woman.

house of the dragon 1x06

I have a lot of thoughts on episode 6 of House of the Dragon.

Firstly, lemme start with saying Emma D’Arcy fucking kills it as older Rhaenyra and I just feel it in my bones that they’ll have even greater chemistry with Matt Smith. So anyways.

Rhaenyra this episode showed not only greatness as a queen but also a mother. The overflowing affection she had for each of her boys was heartwarming, the fact she openly apologised to mrs bitchface in the council meeting and tried to take the higher road, the friendship with laenor (although he didn’t deserve it at times) because even as angry as she is at him she wont break her vows she made to him. I’m heartbroken we didn’t see more of her bond with Ser Harwin given their circumstances, but the subtle glances and the warmth in her eyes whenever they interacted was really sweet. I guess I understand why, there were already rumours of him being the daddy so to have them interacting so plainly with each other would have added more fuel to the fire. But even still we should have seen more. 

In contrast we have mrs bitchface, who’s a whole scheming, conniving, musty ass slice of bread. All her scenes with crispin were really crispin’ on my nerves for real; how are the both of them so obsessed and bitter after 10 YEARS. I hated the fact she made Rhaenyra come to her after my girl had just given birth, and then tried to play the concerned act ‘oh, you should be resting in bed’ like... bitch if you dont get. I hated the fact that she went to Larys and then wanted to act all surprised and innocent when he got our beloved baby daddy murdered (i knew it was coming but that scene fucking destroyed me y’all).

Viserys. I gotta respect him as a father and grandfather, who wont hear anything bad being said about Rhaenyra and his grandchildren, who wants them to play together & fight together so that their bonds are tightened. But as a king? SIR, GET YOUR WIFE AND YOUR PEOPLE. Daemon was so right when he said he was weak. He is weak and he lets himself be too easily swayed. Half those issues they had could have been resolved if he’d had more of a backbone and payed more attention to the people surrounding him then whatever tf he’s building in his chambers. I mean, yes, fine, he was in poor condition and increasingly detoriating so probably didnt want any added stress, but c’mon man. DO YOUR GODDAMN ROLE.

Onto Daemon and Laena. Their relationship was certainly something. I wish we would have seen more of it like how they described it was from the books. From the snippets the show gave us it was tense, but I also believe it was one of  affection and care. I wish they’d given us more than breadcrumbs, but I’ll snatch what they gave us up. 

Yes, I ship Daemyra hardcore but I also believe that Daemon loved Laena and cared for her as much he could given the circumstances. Their dragonride together at the start showed two people who got along, who shared common interests and had fun with each-other. When Laena went up to him on the roof to talk about them going back, and was saying how his life wasnt the one he chose and perhaps she wasnt his first choice of wife, whatever it means he does try to protest. Yes, he was snarky with her too but I mean c’mon thats Daemon. He’s not gonna be a mushy gushy type of lover boy. That’s just not him. That scene ends with Laena resting on his back though, which indicates a level of intimacy with each other. Him staying present during her labour, when he called her ‘my brave girl’ like wtfffff sir i cant. And can we talk about the difference between him and Viserys when both their wives were struggling during labour? CAN WE. He cared about his wife’s survival. He went after her when she left and looked genuinely broken witnessing Laena’s death. 

(Again, that death fucking triggered me man. The fact Vhaegar had to be told more than thrice to burn her rider, and was obviously mourning for the loss.. But kudos to Laena for going out the way she wanted. I just wish we would have seen her saying goodbye to her girls) 

I dont like that we never saw Daemon consoling his two girls after Laena’s death (though I’ll take it as him just being at a complete loss of what to say or do in that situation - grief hits everyone differently i guess), or how its setting him up as a father who favours one child over the other when in the books he loved both his girls equally. Granted this episode also clearly showed that Daemon was struggling not just with fatherhood but his whole place in everything, I’m just hoping that sooner or later he’ll step up and be the father Baela and Rhaena deserve. That small scene of him teaching Baela old valyrian and her kissing his cheek when she went to bed was honestly the sweetest. Matt Smith really delivered with what little he was given and I appreciate that. I just hope they dont have him being more of a father to his stepsons than his girls because that would really irritate me.

All in all, I feel like the frequent time skips and all the rushing doesn’t help. I would have wanted to see at least a couple of episodes dedicated to fleshing out Daemon&Laena and Rhaenyra&Ser Harwin&Laenor’s family dynamics/relationships. I get that they want to get to the Dance quickly, but why did I have to sit through so many scenes of ser crispin and mrs bitchface??? It feels an uneven distribution of screentime somehow and I feel like I’ve been robbed out of something that could have had more of an impact.
