i pledge my due respect to KDE, the project, the contributors, it's history, et cetera. but i hate hate haaaaaaaaaate how it's package dependencies are set up.
no thank you i do not want to download half of KDE project when i want just the video editor, that i will use at best once a month. no thank you i do not want your shitty cursor & icon themes that i will not use and do not want them showing up when i hover my cursor over the program (?????????) no thank you i do not want kio and kdeconnect and like five separate packages for a widget backend that i will not use
why does sudo apt remove *breeze* somehow also include the kdenlive package?

The computer & testing corner of my workbench in my basement, featuring:
An old toughbook I got for cheap, zip-tied to a VESA stand, mounted to...
An old Ergotron monitor arm I intercepted on its way to the dumpster from work (needs new bushings, its lopsided and flops everywhere)
My first ever "good" mic i got back in college; a yeti mic and shitty boom arm, migrated down here when I upgraded my main pc
Headphones my roomate gifted me
a crappy 2-channel oscilloscope I bought off a friend.
The idea of having the laptop on an arm is so I can push it out of the way when I'm not using it. It was on the table before, taking up useful space I could use for abandoning projects! There's at least two entire project's-worth of space I got back by doing this, so I'm very proud! I expect piles of random junk to accumulate their quickly.
I only use the laptop to look up random datasheets, flashing microcontrollers with premade code (I 'ain't in the business of writing software, I let someone else do that), and voice training, so most of the time I can "stow" it off to the side.
Though... It's only running windows because I was being lazy. Maybe another project could be installing Linux...

I will now talk about Immutable Linux Distros and how they can help you potentially make the jump from Windows or Mac to Linux.
Tumblr media
The way an ILD works is that unlike normal distro's or indeed any other desktop operating system is that they work in what's called a "containerized state", what this means is that the root OS itself is set to read only by default and cannot be edited by normal users while the system is in use, this gives it an immense amount of stability and for older people or people with kids it prevents them from installing anything that could potentially damage the computer in a way that makes it inoperable. The next cool thing that they do is how they handle upgrades, the most common cause of an OS just up and kill itself is due to bad upgrades/updates. It happens in windows, MacOS, and even non-immutable versions of Linux; it's just a fact of life. A patch isn't tested properly against edge cases and fucks you up and you're stuck either reverting to a backup image or reinstalling your OS entirely. ILD's on the other hand work more like a mobile OS in that they upgrade the entire OS at one time separately from the active OS image and only when it detects that the upgrade succeeded does it roll you over to the upgrade/update. If the update/upgrade fails it just trashes the entire thing and leaves you where you are. So if you're looking for something that's stable and secure for yourself or your loved ones you might give these a look see. Below I'll link a few of the best ones in order from most used to least: 1. Fedora Silverblue: https://fedoraproject.org/atomic-desktops/silverblue/ 2. Bluefin: https://projectbluefin.io/ 3. Aurora: https://getaurora.dev/ 4. Flatcar: https://www.flatcar.org/releases
So load one up on a thumb drive, give it a whirl, see what you think, anything to separate yourself from the corporate oligarchs of Microsoft and Apple while also giving you a safer and more secure experience.
Enjoy!

This is how I pay for macOS CrossOver every year:
Tumblr media
On one hand, it’s bullshit I have to pay for software to run other paid softwares on my computer, in 2024.
On the other hand, it’s only $34, the company is an employee-owned trust, and almost every bit of code they write is upstreamed to the WINE Project. (Also there’s a Linux version which I sometimes use when regular WINE can’t run certain apps.)

Hopefully by March, we will be living in London, near to a lovely queer community. But we also find myself during this current social isolation we suffer, exiled from our tools, we miss taking on projects. This needs to change. Unfortunately said tools are currently packed up, awaiting out move.
So, after we have migrated from this dreary town, we will setup our little "lab" again and intend to work on various projects, including:
- A Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 powered Linux phone with 4G connectivity (initially)
- A Steampunk meets Atompunk desk, based on a nuclear reactor console
- Setting up Home Assistant powered smart tech in the new home, from lights to temperature control, etc
Have any ideas? Let me know! My specialism is Python, though I'm always up for learning something new. Challenges inspire me.
