okay so I'm not a massive John Walker fan. quite the opposite tbh

he was kinda funny in The Thunderbolts and he has unfortunately grown on me..

AND I REALLY NEED TO NERD OUT ABOUT HIS NEW AVENGERS UNIFORM FOR A SECOND

IT LOOKS LIKE AN ARMY UNIFORM

he's got the army beret and the boots and everything!!

anddd he kept the bent shield which is also pretty cool :)

I like that he's moving away from the traditional Captain America look and becoming more of his own character because that was one of the main reasons I didn't like him I'm ngl

but yeah I don't hate him anymore and I'm a big nerd for cool little details so I'm OBSESSED with his new suit !!!

I know I turned this scene into a joke about how gorgeous Colin Firth is... but the pineapple that lurks in the background of the Netherfield ball when Mr Collins is yapping to Mr Darcy is such a subtle detail that I really appreciate!

The wealthy at this time in Britain were a little bit obsessed with pineapples. Depictions of them featured as decoration in country homes, in political cartoons, paintings and crockery (warning: Margaret Thatcher jumpscare🥴 but you can read more about that here and here).

But to have an actual pineapple on display during a large social gathering such as a ball? That was really showing off.

Especially when you consider it cost £150 (or approx. £28,000 today) to buy the initial plant, build a hothouse to grow them in and run it... with no guarantees they'd grow given the climate was not exactly suited for growing pineapples! It was a huge risk.

All this meant that pineapples were so scarce that they became incredibly sought after. Naturally, rich people did silly rich people things to acquire them and show them off... perhaps they were the NFTs of their day?

A single pineapple was valued at £60 (approx. £11,000 today). Given the cost and effort of acquiring one, you'd think people would be keen to tuck in and sample this exotic fruit? Nope. Pineapples were not eaten! Of course not! They were displayed on plates surrounded by other less prestigious fruit during dinner parties and other social occasions, usually until they rotted. They could be rented for special occasions too. Such was their value that naturally they became the target of thieves and some pineapples even had their own security guards!

In the end, colonialism (because all British history eventually returns to that) meant that pineapples could be imported cheaply and their status was devalued when the working classes could afford to buy them.

But next time you watch Pride and Prejudice (1995), pay attention the scenes in the dining room at the Netherfield ball and look out for the pineapple... which is the second prickliest thing in shot (behind Mr Darcy). 🍍

Also... just to throw in a little etymological rant... as a treat: I know most of the rest of the world calls them ananas... but in English (and other languages) all fruit used to be called an apple of some sort. We just never got around to changing pineapple.

The humble potato has some peculiar names in other languages... looking at you, French and Dutch with your pommes de terre (apples of the earth) and aardappels (earth apples)... and then there is also the Italian for tomato... pomodoro... (golden apple) when most the rest of the world call them some version of the Nahuatl 'tomatl'.

Languages are just funny like that and that's why I find them fascinating!

WHY were the canonical Jewish characters of Newsies turned into Germans? (no hate to Germans obviously but I think you can see how this is problematic)

The following is from the Paper Mill Playhouse Newsies Audience Guide which was created and distributed to give some background on the stage musical production including historical context and a short biography for Pulitzer, and here's how they presented him:

born "to the son of a wealthily grain merchant and a German mother who was a devout Roman Catholic."

To me it seems that this is very blatantly ignoring the fact that Joseph Pulitzer was Jewish and that both of his parents were Jewish.

Granted Pulitzer himself tended to try to divorce himself from this fact while he was alive and spread the rumor that his mother was Catholic (she was not, but at the time a person was recognized as Jewish by matrilineal descent so this was a lie to illegitimate his Jewishness), and for some time even the official Pulitzer Prize website excluded Joseph's true heritage from his biography. However, we have always known that Joseph's father was a Jew, and the above paragraph doesn't even bother to acknowledge that fact. Meanwhile his mother is described as being German and "a devout Roman Catholic," implying Joseph Pulitzer was likewise since we are provided no other information.

And then of course we have the case of the Jacobs family who's surname was changed in adaptation from Jacobs to Baum, which is German in origin. (Jacobs, on the other hand, comes directly from Hebrew.)

Now, obviously, German Jews do exist and do have German surnames in some cases. But the Jacobs are not German, they're Polish. And while Jacobs is very much a Jewish name, Baum is much less so and erased pretty much the only concrete/canon evidence in the context of the original film that David and his family were Jewish.

Tell me, what was the point of all of this?

Okay so here's my thing: I figured I would hop right into part 2 of my babby Tim fic after finishing part 1, and then a really fucked up Tim/Ra's idea jumped into my head and got me by the throat, and now I have mood whiplash from my own brain/writing?!

Also, a scene from my truly stupid, self-indulgent "Jason and Tim accidentally become bros immediately" fic sprung into my sleepy mind and then poured itself out of my fingers fully formed into a Google Doc.

So. I may be writing multiple longfics at the same time. Wish me luck?!

after many a times of calling myself a kon kinnie and yet not analysing what made me so sure, i finally decided to look into the kusuriuris' MBTI and you might be interested in them too

first of all, when I asked the internet about the kusuriuri's MBTI, my biggest pet peeve was wether or not they'll differentiate them.

and they did... for the most part.

for now I'm sure you're most curious about what their personality types actually are, and...

tada! Kon! Kusuriuri (karakasa movie's medicine seller) is an ENTP, which I whole heartedly agree with and understand the reason for.

Ri!Kusuriuri (the ayakashi and mononoke series) is an INTP according to the forums, and while that does seem likely, I also have very big grievances about it for 2 reasons,

1. I find Kon and Ri to be vastly different characters, and even if you take in their job and how it shapes them, they surely have more differences than "extrovert and introvert" in my books

2. I know INTP people. in my younger days I was an INTP person, and yet Ri's thinking and mannerisms completely allude me. I can't for the life of me predict his decision making skills, and after doing an MBTI test for him, I suspect that's because he's not an INTP, but an INTJ.

small difference, right? nope. the difference is between Kurapika (INTJ) and L (INTP). Tsukishima Kei (INTJ) and Kakashi (INTP) do you see where I'm getting at?

Also I did more research, and turned out that while almost 99% of the people agreed on the first 3, the vote for Perceiving and Judging was literally 50/50 in the site too. so ha

My favorite fact about Andrew is that cilantro tastes like soap to him- it's actually caused by genetic variations in certain people. Their receptors are super sensitive which causes them to be able to detect chemicals that give off that flavor.

(Forgive me, Mom's a chef and I'm studying to become a geneticist lol... she told me this a few years ago and I went down a whole rabbithole to learn more. Hearing that about Andrew made me laugh a little.)

(For me, it's raw carrots that taste like soap, I have no idea if it's caused by the same thing.)

@blackjackkent's liveblog of BG3 has inspired So Many Thoughts about the Emperor and Raphael and how they compare as characters.

It's come up that the Emperor's character writing could be intended to portray very different motivations based on how the player character responds to it, but personally I don't think that's it. At its core, I think the Emperor is being honest about its motivations: it only wants to survive. What it's not saying is that it will do anything to achieve that end, at the cost of anyone in its way. And the best tool it has to do that is the protagonist.

Its conversations with the protagonist always remind me of abusive relationship dynamics. it plays nice as long as that works, and changes tactics when nice doesn't get what it wants. It constantly reminds you that you need each other, that you couldn't survive without it, that it is the only one you can trust. It offers moments of vulnerability to lure you in, then tries to cut you off from any allies or courses of action it doesn't approve of.

The thing about abusive relationships is that they only turn violent and confrontational when the abuser doesn't get their way. Violence is a last resort, and most abusers prefer to manipulate people without it. Some people go years without discovering their abuser has the capacity for violence, because they never confront them on the control they exert.

And that's exactly how the Emperor relates to the protagonist. If you never question it, never choose a path it doesn't like, you never get pushback. As long as you play by its rules it has no reason to change tactics, because what it's doing is working.

It's only when the protagonist's aims clearly don't match its own that it resorts to threats. It's only when you call the Emperor's bluff, tell it you know it doesn't care about you, that it shows you the truth about its relationship with Stelmane.

Because the truth is, it only cares about its own survival and freedom. And it's very skilled at the game it's playing. It has a profound ability to judge what the protagonist needs to hear, and show them what they want to see. If you want to see a friend who transcends what a mind flayer is supposed to be, it plays that part flawlessly. If you see through that, it has other methods of control at its disposal.

And the Emperor is brilliantly written as a manipulator. It can convince you that it's been on your side all along. It leaves just enough doubt that you might never know the truth. It preys on trust, and exploits the protagonist's willingness to believe in the inherent goodness of people. It expresses trust and vulnerability to the protagonist, anticipating that they will return that trust in response, regardless of whether it can be trusted.

And the cool thing about Raphael is that he's a very similar type of character. He also knows that being nice gets you further than being dangerous. The difference between them is that Raphael isn't quite as good at it: he has a temper, and is quicker to drop the mask. He has an ego that won't let him tolerate even the slightest resistance without breaking character. He believes in bribery over trust, and it makes his act easier to see through. The protagonist can express the same doubt in both of them and get threats from Raphael and disappointment from the Emperor, which pushes them away from one and towards the other.

And one of the striking things about BG3 is the sheer range of dangerous people it throws at your party. You have the tyrant queen, who took power through betrayal and maintains it through disinformation. The power-hungry boss, who offers what you want only until his rise to power is threatened. The abusive parent, who sees his children as possessions who exist to entertain him. The political climber, who treats his loyalists as pawns in a long game of personal gain. The sadistic elite, who's never had to hide her cruelty to those she controls because that's what authority means in her social circle. The loving father, who cares so little for the rest of the world he'd burn it all down to keep his daughter safe.

It's all excellent writing, but the Emperor might be the masterpiece. You can play out the whole story without clearly seeing how it fits the pattern. It can be your loyal partner, standing at your side and protecting you from all those dangerous people.

But it doesn't have to be. If you question its protection and loyalty, it can also be your worst enemy, determined to use all your shared struggles and deepest secrets to tear you apart.

I've never really had many people that pay attention to my interests. I have this one person from school [hai m :] ] but once he's heard everything, I have nobody else to geek out to. So that's why tumblr is great. We're all just nerds and no matter how little traction I can get, I see so much fan media otherwise and I get to post my fan stuff literally whenever I feel like it just to share it. Because it makes me happy.

Ok so yesterday I was looking up Simon (common occurrence) cause I was drawing him (another common occurrence, drawing isn’t finished yet) and a took a little better of a look at his armor plate from Simon’s Quest and the designs on it.

So—

These gold patterns are very swooshy, fluid shapes with some very spikey, hooked sections. They also have gems inlaid in three places on the chest right at the ends and center of the design, with little circles coming off of it dedicated to them specifically. And it sounds weird, but this looks like a floral design to me, or at least some kind of plantlike. Very stylized for sure, but in the way that the fleur de lis is supposed to be a lily and doesn’t look exactly like one.

So at like uh midnight a bit back I looked up some stylized plants in art and whatnot and boy was that a hard search because google doesn’t know what you mean by “floral stylized in a similar way to the fleur de lis” and the amount of AI that comes up under armor designs specifically doesn’t help. Anyway, two things it could be that I ran into—

It could be a very simplified depiction of acanthus leaves, which are sometimes depicted more like actual leaves of a real plant, but sometimes are just swooping curves with some spikiness on them. They often times also have the motif of three points of interest (usually buds or a bloom) that line up fairly well with the three gems and were common for things like metalworking and gilding. It’s a fair match, not super great since it’s not exact, but considering there’s no distinct flowers, a ok-ish bet. My biggest thing with it, even if the symbolism would be so fitting and cool, is that they’re typically depicted way more clustered and there’s usually not very much of an open space, especially on a breastplate like that.

I also ran into other armors from the time period (or at least the websites said they were) with other closer looking floral designs and had to try to find out what these were on my own. This one in particular caught my eye as a little bit closer.

One seems to be a gladiolus, and the symbolism here works out, it’s pretty standard stuff that’d be on armor. However, again, the Simon’s quest armor does not have very distinct blooms, more similar to simplified buds, so it’s hard to tell.

There’s also a possibility this could be roses, since those tends to have thorns as a main focal point and the hooked parts look thorny, or it could be a combination of multiple flowers I’m just not running into. Of course, I know the original artist likely did not mean anything in particular by this design other than “cool old looking armor design”, BUUUUT— I want to know what looks like closest to it to uh take the flower symbolism for myself hehe :3.
