Buddie x Reader AU. Two reluctant dance novices wind up in a beginners ballroom class while on a cruise. Will it be smooth sailing? Not if the cute dance teacher can help it. Part one

Day four - Tuesday

The ship had docked overnight and you awoke to palm trees and turquoise water beckoning from out your cabin window. Your parents had picked the shore excursion for the morning, a trip over the reef on a glass bottom boat. While that sounded amazing, it was knowing afterwards you could relax on the beach and daydream about two of your fellow shipmates which has really put a spring into your step.

You were briefly regaining your land legs as you waited with your family, and other excursion members, to board the smaller boat when you heard your name from somewhere in the line behind you.

Turning around you easily spotted the familiar face towering over the rest of the line. giving your family a quick smile you made your way back towards him.

"Hey Buck, fancy seeing you here. Are you also getting dragged along to this?"

"On no don't let him blame us for this, the idea was all his," his sisters' partner responded - Chim if you remembered correctly. "This man is obsessed with animals. He has been learning about all the native species of fish for weeks."

Buck blushed but nodded his head in agreement. "This area has one of the highest diversity of species in the world. There are species here that haven't been spotted outside these coral reefs and others that have been limited to this area due to changing conditions or invasive species."

"We were initially going to go scuba diving to get really immersed, but this little girl vetoed that so the glass bottom boat was the next best thing," Maddie said running her hand over her baby bump. "Actually you two should sit together - Buck's facts would be wasted on Howie and I. Mainly because we have heard them all."

Unbeknownst to you, Buck gave her a glare for meddling. "I'm sure you don't want to spend the whole trip listening to me."

"Actually I'd love to." You blurted out, purely focused on the chance to get to hear Buck passionately ramble again. "It is that or listen to my Dad make fish puns the whole trip. You'd be doing me a favour!"

"Okay so see all the bright fish over there that kind of looks chrome?" You nod as you spot the fish amongst the coral, "That's a type of parrot fish. Did you know they are called that cause they have teeth that are so tightly packed it looks like it forms a beak?"

"Oh I see! That's really cool. Always nice when its a logical name"

"Right! And even cooler is that most of the species are born female and then change to male later. And it's the male's that are the bright colours, the females are generally a duller brown or red."

"Oh, so it's pretty likely that this fish is male then?"

"Yeah, and in it's terminal phase".

"I know your friend said you were doing this for fun, but are you sure you aren't a marine biologist?"

"I wish! Just an avid reader unfortunately."

"Then what do you do? If you don't mind me asking."

"I'm a firefighter actually. Not quite as cool,"

"Literally," You joked, "But I beg to differ. You're actually doing every kids dream job."

"Yours included?"

"Absolutely, I wore a firefighter costume three years running for Halloween. Eventually realised it might not just be all cool rescues, but actually is probably very emotionally taxing,"

"Yeah, the good days are great. But when things go wrong its hard. Luckily I have an amazing squad I work with, that really helps."

"I know you probably hear it so often, but what you do is heroic. Not many people would choose to put themselves at risk for others, and certainly not every day. But in saying that I'm certainly glad you are getting a break, I'm sure it is well deserved."

"Me too, but it feels a little bittersweet you know? I love Maddie and Chim but I can't help wanting to have someone to experience this with for myself."

"I understand. It's nice being here, but you can't help but think you are intruding. That it is just a pity invite."

"Yeah, you get it." Buck said, giving a wistful smile before shaking his head. "Sorry, not sure how we got here - might be time to lighten the mood."

"Okay, I think I can help. Do you know that you're not the only one who's done their research?"

"Yeah?"

"So you see those bright red corals there? They're called fire corals. Although they aren't really corals, but are more jelly-fish like!" You begin excitedly as Buck looks on in awe.

The time on the boat with Buck had been amazing, he was so easy to talk to and really just the sweetest. You really didn't want it to end, so as you stepped off the boat side by side you decided to be brave.

"So I was planning on heading to the beach bar, would you like to come?" You asked, pointing around the bay to where sunbeds were set up in the distance. "Only if you want of course, I completely understand if you need to spend time with your sister. Or if you want a break.." You rambled.

"I'd love to," He smiled interrupting your monologue. "Just let me go tell Maddie." He jogged off while you found your own family to let them know. Some gentle teasing followed, but eventually you waved them back on the boat.

"Ready," Buck said making a reappearance. Following the bay around you chatted about the favourite things you spotted on the boat. You decided on a manta-ray, while Buck after much deliberation went with a red sea star.

The walk wasn't long, but it was certainly hot, so by the time you made it to the bar a cold drink was in order. After ordering the cocktails from the bartender you spotted a familiar face on one of the lounges.

"Hey Buck, is that Eddie down there?" You gestured to the sunglass clad shirtless man, sitting alone.

"Oh," Buck licked his lips unconsciously, "I think it is"

"Should we go join him? Do you think he'll mind?"

"I guess there is no harm in asking."

Approaching you gave a little wave, trying to get his attention. Eventually he caught sight of you both an his face broke into a gentle smile.

"Fancy seeing you both here," Eddie said, sitting up to make room on the lounge.

"Small island," You joked, taking a seat across from Eddie.

"Us? This is what you get to do on your day off? Clearly I'm in the wrong gig," Buck said, sitting down beside Eddie.

"I'm really sorry to break the news to you but I don't think dance instructor is a viable career for you Buck," Eddie snickered.

"I don't know Eddie. I think some of the older ladies will happily take any class he teaches."

"Uh-huh. Just older?" Buck said, looking you up and down.

"We all know the answer to that, but I'm not going to inflate your ego further by voicing it." You blushed. "Don't think you'd be short on male participants either to be completely honest,"

"Oh he wouldn't," Eddie muttered, eyes going wide as he realised he said it out loud.

"Don't worry Eds, I don't think I could steal your class away. You have the actual skills, and well to put it frankly - you're hot as hell,"

For a second you felt like maybe you should leave the two men to their devices as they maintained each others gaze - gentle smiles tugging at each of their lips.

"And you?" Eddie asked, turning to you and raising a brow.

"I was never even thinking about overthrowing Eddie and taking the class,"

"That's not what he asked and you know it," Buck quipped, his tone firm but teasing.

Your cheeks warmed, "I think you are both so attractive it's distracting,"

"Interesting," Buck and Eddie muttered in unison.

In defense of Ron Molan

Since I already wrote a post about Deruth, I'm going to make one for Ron as well because I'm absolutely confused why some readers hate him too.

Fair warning once again, if you haven't read or finished the first volume of TCF, please be prepared for SPOILERS. Thanks!

So...this is going to be a long post too. Be prepared lmao

Isekai and Abandonment

Like with Deruth, the most common thing some readers hate about Ron, is how he abandoned OG Cale and didn't seem to notice a difference when Cale and Kim Rok Soo got swapped.

Like I mentioned in my post about Deruth, please put yourself in their shoes before criticizing or hating them. Imagine this.

You noticed that a friend or family of yours, someone who you know for how many years, suddenly changed. The changes aren't obvious. There are some parts of their personality that are still them and some that have changed. What would you first think?

Transmigration? Long lost twin? Clone? Possession? No. The first thing you'll probably think is they have a problem that they can't tell you or maybe they just want to change. You'll be confused but you won't think too much about it. It happened but what are you gonna do about it? Ask them? And if they don't tell you why, would you push for it? Maybe you'll continue to watch and see if you'll find something incriminating but it won't ever answer your questions unless the other person talks.

So is Ron at fault for not noticing this after serving OG Cale since he was a baby (and changed his diapers lmao)?

Yes and no.

He should've asked Cale, former KRS, more about the topic. He should've pushed because he's an assassin. It's his job to know more. But he didn't push because there is some truth to Cale's first impression of Ron.

He cares for OG Cale but it's not enough for him to leave behind his thirst for revenge and completing his goals. And in all honesty, I find it logical for him to leave OG Cale to join Choi Han in TBoaH.

He lost his whole family to Arm, with only Beacrox as his reminder of what he lost. He was accepted as a butler for the Henituse family but that doesn't mean he forgot his past as an assassin. He'll always be an assassin and he'll leave behind whatever attachments he has depending on how useful that attachment is.

He only stayed in TCF because OG Cale was replaced with Kim Rok Soo. He was intrigued but not enough to completely leave his mission. It only changed when Cale got angry when he lost his arm and helped him gain a new one. He now owes Cale a debt.

Before, he owes the Henituse family a debt because they gave him a place where he and his son can hide in. He repaid that by being their butler and possible protector from other assassins or danger (tbh I dunno if they know he's an assassin). Still, his mind is focused on any opportunity to find and kill the organization that ruined his life. So it was easy for him to leave when he first noticed the connection Choi Han has with Arm.

Saying he abandoned Cale because he doesn't care is not completely wrong but it's also not completely right. He has layers. (Like Shrek and his onion lmao)

Lemon tea and Scary butlers

Another reason why some readers don't like Ron is, funnily enough, because of the lemon tea that he keeps giving Cale. And because he scares Cale.

Lemon tea? Seriously?

Some say Cale hates it and Ron keeps giving the drink. They say it shows that he doesn't care about his master and that he disrespects him. And yet, here I am just finding this absolutely hilarious.

Personally, I don't like tea so I understand why Cale doesn't like lemon tea. But I just see this interaction with Ron as a comedic relief and them bonding in their weird way. Sure, it gets repetitive, but after looking up what benefits a person gets from drinking lemon tea and knowing all the mess Cale gets into 24/7, it's pretty tame that lemon tea is the only thing he gives to Cale. These two are so emotionally stunted but that doesn't mean Cale will stay quiet if he truly doesn't like the tea Ron keeps giving him.

He's the master and Ron is the butler. Ron and Beacrox are both loyal to him. He can order Ron to stop giving him lemon tea anytime he wants. He talked down stupid nobles and priests for worse things they did and didn't do (because of Mary). I don't believe he can't tell Ron that he's being disrespectful to Cale as his butler.

If your reason is Cale is too scared of Ron to tell him to stop, then I think you don't understand their dynamic.

Cale finds everyone, not just Ron, scary. He finds the kids scary. He finds Choi Han scary. He finds the Whale Tribe scary. They're OP and can kill him before he can blink. And yet he's very close to all of them.

Ron scares him because Ron is an assassin and is very good at his job. And honestly? A normal person would be scared of Ron. But the difference is, Cale is not normal and he can also kill anyone if he wants to (are his ancient powers and skills he gained as KRS decoration to you guys?). Him being "scared" is him being respectful of Ron's abilities. He acknowledges Ron's strength but also finds the way he smiles when he can kill someone, "scary" (understandable).

So no, the whole lemon tea thing and him being scared of Ron that he can't tell him to stop giving the stupid tea doesn't make sense as a reason for hating or disliking Ron.

Oh, and last thing.

Ron actually gave Cale a sweet tea once early in the novel. I think it was before the war and Cale was stressed with a lot of things, including maintaining the shield around the territory. So...yeah, he shows concern for Cale in his own twisted way.

Again, layers.

That's my opinion about the matter. In short, Ron is a human being who can be selfish and dangerous. He's a person who has emotions despite being an assassin. He has his own goals. It's not that hard to understand him.

This is just something I've noticed when in spaces surrounding my interests:

A lot of leftists genuinely can't fathom how conservatives can and do enjoy content created by someone they disagree with. Often, posts will pop up that are along the lines of, "How can conservatives say they like this music or TV show or book series when the people behind these things (or the characters within the fictional content) would hate their guts and they're pro things conservatives aren't? There's no logic in that and it just shows how dumb the right is."

In reality, I think it just shows how close-minded the left can be. Many of the things I enjoy were created by left-leaning people, but that doesn't mean it's not good content. I keep my political views out of these spaces mostly because they're not relevant, y'know? (I'm also just introverted/shy lol - I barely interact as is). For example, my favorite genre of music is grunge. 99% of grunge musicians were openly left-leaning, but guess what? I don't care and I still like the music. The left puts so much weight on the opinions of celebrities and politicians (while trying to act like they're rebels/punk) that they think you have to agree with these completely disconnected strangers on everything.

"This celebrity/character would hate you," is such an odd argument to make, in my opinion. It's like - okay, and?

Which is why it's always the left that are trying to cancel people. They can't separate politics from anything, which is why they are always unhappy, there's always a problem, they never enjoy anything and are impossible to please.

They can't appreciate art from other perspectives because everyone on earth has to have their exact positions on all issues or they are Bad People. So much for their "diversity is our strength" nonsense lmao.

I actively try to avoid hearing political takes from any artist I appreciate because I'm not here for a political or moral guide, I'm here for entertainment. And when you look to celebrities for guidance you are looking in the wrong place because no one is more out of touch than they are lol.

I just assume the artists I enjoy are all woke leftists because most people in those industries are and if they're not then I can be pleasantly surprised.

But if if I get told "you know so-and-so is a leftist and would probably hate you, right?" I literally could not care less because I'm not trying to be their friend. I find most of them, personality wise, to be pretty annoying myself.

It just demonstrates a real flaw with leftists that they cannot comprehend how someone could engage with or appreciate anything about someone that has different perspectives and opinions. Sounds like an absolutely miserable existence always having to be outraged about something and making sure every artist you like has the Right Opinions.

plot-wise, the AU is predominantly centered around the two Ethos—the 'original', who works for the Script Foundation and donated his DNA to their clone research for a little extra cash, and 404, an escaped clone and one of the more successful results of said research. The Script Foundation is a scientific/medical corporation, among the many in the system looking for a cure to death. To get around their inability to experiment on human subjects, they developed the cloning program, to develop realistic human bodies without the consciousness that brings in ethical issues (spoiler alert this does not happen).

When 404 escapes, of course the Script Foundation wants them back. A bounty is put out for them, and the Etho's put on a team to help bring them back. Etho, Tango (ship mechanic, Etho's only friend), and Joel (bounty hunter, does not want to be here) spend their time hunting down 404, and running into many issues along the way.

On the other side of things, 404 spends only about 3 hours on the run before they run into Pause and Beef. There's a lot of weirdness here, 404 doesn't recognize Pause and Beef beyond a sense of deja vu, and Pause and Beef think 404 is Etho (who they have not seen in years and have presumed is dead). I'm writing a fic for this scene, actually. long story short team canada takes 404 in, and agree they can stay with them for a bit.

From this point on, there's a lot going on for both sides.

Etho's face is plastered all over the city, it's a pretty high bounty, and he probably gets mistaken for 404 multiple times before the information gets updated with a photo of 404 with the scar. Joel and Tango have to work together to rescue him after he gets captured by rival bounty hunters

404 gets beef and pause to call them that, because they don't want to be etho (and the confusion that would come from using that name is immense). they aren't etho. they're not entirely satisfied with going by their number designation though, but they've got nothing better

pause and beef continue to grapple with the fact that A: etho is not dead, B: the guy that looks like Etho, who is currently sleeping on their couch, is not actually Etho, and C: they're helping a wanted criminal

The two of them do briefly consider handing 404 over, with the logic that they shouldn't have any attachment to them since they're just a clone, not actually their friend. They can't bring themselves to, though.

404's scar is from a knife to the face- when they first met beef and pause, 404 had no idea who they were. they were scared, and intimidated, and those two were acting way too familiar with them. they attacked pause, and he retaliated. it just so happened that pause was armed, and trained how to fight, and 404 was...not.

luckily, 404 heals quickly. a cut to the face that should have taken minimum of a month to heal, and should have been fatal without medical attention, resolves itself in a few days. ...that's probably why the script foundation wants him back, huh.

Team canada are able to keep the knowledge that theyre harboring a fugitive on the downlow by being known bounty hunters- they've generally got good standing with people.

in fact, 404 just helps them with bounty hunting. They have the time of their life doing this shit. pause and beef love having them around too (it makes them wish Etho had agreed to join them doing this, all those years ago).

team canada are having a lighthearted and fun time, things go wrong but they escape trouble and everything ends alright. that's their vibe.

for etho though, everything keeps going wrong it's almost comical. everytime they've got a lead and almost catch 404, something gets in the way. in my head this au really is just a space opera anime in a similar vein to cowboy bebop, so etho and the gang are like the very unlucky villains.

tango and joel are constantly bickering. a big point of contention between them is that joel wants to fly the ship, because this is his mission and he was hired to do this, but Tango won't let him because its his ship and he's not going to let some bounty hunter drive it. Etho is so tired.

404 does not wear a facemask like etho. in fact its just a generally stressful time for etho to have his face well known everywhere. he doesn't like people seeing his face, and while mostly its an anxiety thing during social interaction, after so long of keeping it private, its really unsettling having to see it everywhere.

Joel's mostly in it for the money to pay off his debt, Tango's there because he's worried about Etho, and Etho's doing it because he thinks he has to. He hasn't really had a life seperate from the Script Foundation in years, it's all he knows. for him, this is about finding out what he's being made to do it fucked up, and the choice to do something about it.

It's about seeing this happier and more free version of himself, and choosing to help them instead of feeling the resentment he wants to. (Look at this person who is meant to be you. they are experiencing the joy you never got with the people you turned your back on. you realise you've never gotten that, you've been hiding from yourself for your entire life because you've been scared of upsetting the quota. you've been settling for mediocrity when you could've had so much more. Are you going to allow them that?)

also 404 might figure out theyre trans so that's a really fun thing for etho to find out about himself through his clone.

yeah i think the genres here are very different depending on whether you're looking at it from 404 or from Etho's pov lmao

and this isn't even getting into the shit about genetically enhanced humans, or cyborgs.

okay you've made it this far, have some sketches of the ethos as reward. these are from probably a mid point in the plot, i was playing with the idea of 404 being able to grow their hair our for a few months after escaping.

I feel like there should be more "problematic" characters in fiction. we talk a whole lot about "problematic" ship dynamics or "problematic" themes

but we don't talk enough about the LACK of characters with flaws. with reprehensible morals and actions and you might be thinking " wdym? there's tons of that? there's so many villains." and yeah there are. but how many go beyond murder. be honest. how many are actually horrible people. most stories you see the villain is written with backstories to help the reader sympathize with the villain and understand why they are doing what they are doing. its still plenty obvious that said villain is in the wrong. and don't get me wrong those villains are still great and all but its very... bland especially when its just... good guy turned bad and is trying to get revenge like... that's not a flaw imo. flawed logic maybe. but it doesn't exactly make them a bad person. "so what do you want then?" you wanna know what I want? I want holocaust level of bad. that's right I want villains who are fucking racist as shit. I want pedophiles, I want lgbtphobic pieces of shit, I want genuine cult leaders with accurate depictions of cult tactics and manipulation, hell there's probably worse things I could list but I have a bad memory. I want to actually hate a villain. I want antagonists that I can actually hate and don't have to sympathize with because "boo hoo my family is abusive and neglectful please pity me and don't kill me for the awful shit I've done" I want to experience the rage of having to deal with such people WITH the MC and thoroughly hate the villains. I want villains who are actually bad and aren't just a sort of... peek into what's wrong with society to have made these people this way I'm tired of all the villains where you can mostly blame their actions on a failing society I want villains that are truly terrible and their actions are ENTIRELY their fault

like I can understand that may be a bit too dark for most stories, or y'know people aren't interested, but a lot of the time it seems like people are afraid to write these kinds of characters. probably in fear of being accused of condoning their actions because antis are just like that.

but please. I need real villains. I need genuinely horrible people with no redemption. who just need to be cut down because they are that dangerous. I need sick fucks who will never change.

stanford is autistic-coded and that really affected his relationship with fiddleford (tbob spoilers)

(I want to start off saying I’m autistic and might rant about Arthur a bit here because it’s a 10+ year strong special interest and you just have to deal with it)

“another day, another failed social interaction.” (ford, the book of bill)

“when my waitress told me the apple pie was made ‘from scratch,’ I replied, ‘incredible! I must meet the chef who created the atoms!’ She made a face like she had tasted bleach and ended her shift early.”

I read this imagining ford smiling, expecting a laugh from the waitress. I know so many autistic people who make jokes like this, it really to me doesn’t seem much different from the jokes that people do like. Taking things and shifting their meaning. The children’s show Arthur put it best in the episode “When Carl Met George” (or, “Carl and the Missing Puzzle Piece”, definitely check it out, although it was made in 2010 so it uses an outdated term and has few stereotypes)

Basically in that episode, autism was described as George crash landing on an alien planet with no instructions.

here’s some of the transcript:

“(narrator): …And even though you speak the same language, you sometimes have a hard time understanding what they mean.

Francine (as alien): Good night for a banana fight, right?

George: Um, yes? No! I don't know!”

Arthur (as alien) walks up to them wearing flippers, a tutu, a huge bow tie and a hat of whipped cream with a cherry. His outfit is absolutely ridiculous.

“(narrator): and things that seem hilarious to you…

George: (laughs)

 (narrator): ...aren't funny at all to them.

Arthur (as alien): What's he laughing at? Is it my nose?

Francine (as alien): I have no idea. You're weird!

Francine and Arthur walk off.

George: But it was a joke, right? Oh.”

this basically describes the situation perfectly. on top of that, I know of autistic men that seem like they are being aggressive or sarcastic to women when they make these jokes, most likely what happened during this dining incident. (which, honestly, women go through a lot of shit with men and I don’t blame them if they assume the worst.)

But let’s go to fidds and fords relationship. (romantic or not.)

I’ve seen so many fiddlestan posts shaming ford for what are just autistic qualities to justify their ship being superior. (ex. One post said “stan recognized when fidds was distressed unlike SOME people” in a fanfic, which is both shaming ford and pretty uncanon seeming)*

I really don’t think ford realized fidds wasn’t ok until it all fell apart. he closest he goes is basically “fidds seems jittery from the whole shapeshifter thing so we can just relax and that will fix it.” I think it’s a common autistic mentality that “if this happens I can fix it with this, and that will solve the problem.”

many people on the spectrum have logical systematic thinking and a preference for clear rules with predictable outcomes.

I think that’s the closest ford ever got to thinking that something was wrong.

I think he never realized fidds was actually going insane. All he thought was that he was going to betray him because of Bill and that black ring.

I really think he held onto the thought that fidds betrayed him. autistic people are also a lot of times easier to manipulate due to challenges in seeing deception, probably why bill saw him as an easy target.

but of course, fidds in the end with his big heart and amazing mind forgave ford. i’m almost positive he knew ford thought different.

Oh boy, I'm excited/nervous to share this - I wrote a song. About Tech Bad Batch.

I just had... so many feelings about him, and how his life/'death' (as an amazing, actually freaking groundbreaking autistic character, done quite dirty by the narrative's conclusion) was handled, the story choices and the fan reaction to them. Feelings of anger, betrayal, loss, utter confusion due to frankly bizarre story structure and simply falling into fog (where we can't see him) -

So this is me processing... All That. And coming to the conclusion that even if aspects of it hurt me, ultimately, stories and the people in them belong to all of us, and our feelings about them are ours and real, even if the characters aren't. Delusion and shipping logic aside. Ianthony being romantically involved with each other and dating would make lot of sense.

I know that a lot of fans feel like they have to ''defend'' them from shippers. I get it, I really do. I can understand why a lot of people react defensively, in an effort to protect them, and push the ''they are just friends and that's great'' narrative, (exactly like we have seen them do with Shourtney before the marriage announcement).

But even though that is a valid sentiment, I also feel that trying to stop fans from hoping there might be something more (especially when there definitely are a lot of things pointing in that direction) and dismisisng everything as ''delusion'', is not the way to go.

Most operate under the assumption that the shippers are seeing things that aren't there, ... but what if that is not entirely the case?

I think that both sides should keep an open mind and just see what happens.

I love Ianthony, yes, but even putting the shipping goggles aside, I still think that it makes a lot of sense for many reasons.

If you don't see it (or think you have to pretend that you don't because of your fear of being parasocial and invasive) it's ok. But as long as they are respectful bout it, there is nothing wrong with some seeing something there and hoping for the best.

Even because, to be completely honest, I don't think shippers are the only ones believing there could be something going on.

Even when they read ''childhood friends turned lovers'' Reddit story, it seemed pretty clear to me that both Shayne and Courtney were trying trying to encourage Anthony (and Ian) in some way. Those two know exactly what it's like to be in love with a friend and coworker and can probably read the signs better than anyone else, and they definitely seemed to have be wanting to say something to Anthony.

Of course, you can say that it's just reading too much into things and that Shourtney's comments, the reason the story was picked in the first place and Anthony's emotional reaction to it, can all be explained away in a different manner, but it's just yet another thing to add to the list that has been growing for quite a while.

In the end all I am saying is that none of us know, but especially after the Shourtney thing, I think that shippers (the respectful ones of course) should be given a bit more leniency.

Nobody knows what will happen. I think it would be amazing if they started dating, and I'm really hoping for it, but in the end I just want them happy, we all do. So fingers crossed and let's wait and see, there's no hurry.

I definitely think there's sexism at play with Nia (although not quite as overt it was with Carmen), people are less forgiving towards female characters across all types of media. Especially ones who aren't humble/modest, morally good, supportive of or even subordinate to male characters (especially if the protagonist is male), conventionally attractive (I know Nia is, but just making the point generally), etc.

But in this specific instance, I think it's also because Nia is the only one with a prior positive relationship with the MC. I could see the MC feeling more strongly about Nia's actions than Lorcan's (who they never had a positive relationship with) and Imre (who they didn't even interact with or care about lol). With Nia, the MC has actually lost something, one of the few positive relationships they had. Maybe the only one if you consider Sally's to be “positive” but unhealthy.

Generally readers tend to feel protective over MCs against characters who hurt them. Sometimes to the extent that isn't viewing the situation fairly/logically, or giving the same grace to other characters as you do for the MC. I've seen authors receive hate over that for characters that are gender selectable too (e.g. Infamous). And this MC is an unreliable narrator and we haven't gotten an explanation from Nia yet or seen what she's seen firsthand, we didn't get a full conversation with her until recently. I think these factors make it harder to judge the situation and easier to view Nia negatively, because as the reader we're missing important pieces of the puzzle right now.

It also could be that what Nia did (distancing herself, ending their friendship, not seeming to care about them anymore (before the end of this chapter)) is something that's more relatable to real life and might even be something people have personally experienced. I see people hate bully characters more than outright murdering villains, because the latter doesn't feel real to most people, whereas there are a lot of people online who have experienced bullying at school. And whilst I understand that Nia doesn't actually like or respect any of that popular group apart from Imre, she's still willingly associating herself with people who are bullying Crown, someone they were friends with for most of their lives.

(I'm saying all this as someone who's looking forward to my MC and Nia rekindling their friendship. But I can understand why some people feel sour towards her, even if her actions are understandable and justified from her perspective. I would probably do the same thing as her tbh, probably even earlier on when she first witnessed a violent outburst. But even if you're being reasonable, your actions/words can still hurt someone else, and I don't think it's unreasonable for that person to feel negatively towards you as a result.)

Like I’ve said many times before I understand the anger over the abandonment, I think it’s extremely valid. My issue is with how the boys are given more grace in everything they do. It just seems hypocritical to be angry at Nia but then coddle the boys as if they’re little babies who don’t understand right and wrong

Imre is friends with those people too, he’s the king of the bully group and even though he doesn’t partake he associates himself with them willingly. Like I really appreciate you writing this all down, and I agree with it it’s just any form of media I’ve always hated how women are held to higher standards than men who are sanctified when all three of them aren’t that great. You want to say “fuck you” to Nia? Good. Deserved from the POV of Crowny. But like there’s no point in twisting the narrative to make it seem that anyone of them is worse than the others when all of them have issues and have not treated Crowny the best

PVZ COMICS/GAMES THEORY: ZOMBIES AMONG THE HUMANS

(Before starting, if i got anything wrong, im sorry! this is my first theory)

I'll be basing this theory largely on the comic called Bully for You. Other material will be included.

To start: I want to and will base myself on the headcanon/opinion that Zomboss is the same age as Dave (36) or that he is a little older.

FIRST PROOF:

In this image, you can see the zombie school. On the side, there are three signs. One of them points the way to a school FOR humans.

In my opinion, it's quite curious that zombies already had a school, a separate education. They could be considered a separate species, with special schools for them.

At least in my country (Argentina), the minimum age to enter university is 18. If we assume Zomboss is 36, 18 years ago, humans lived (apparently) in peace with zombies. Interactions with zombies at that time are more casual, with people selling them things, etc.

And if we think about it this way, the zombies' current interactions with humans aren't so unusual. It's known that humans in Neighborville act stupidly, as if they don't care or don't know about the danger they face. But if we consider that they were used (at least before) to living with zombies, it's understandable. Below are some examples/panels that can help explain this:

Now, let's talk about Timepocalypse and what happens in it. Zomboss sends the zombies to retrieve parts from a machine. Since it's based on PVZ2, the zombies are in ancient Egypt. This causes a change in the timeline. Remember, Bully for You canonically takes place AFTER the events of Timepocalypse (weeks or days later). The timeline was altered because the zombies being in Ancient Egypt and staying THERE (there are no signs that they were all removed from there) would cause the zombies to begin living among humans from that moment on.

After the fight with the zombies, Patrice becomes the queen of Egypt (which also implies quite a few other things), and we're shown a zombie and a human as her servants. The plants don't attack them. Right after that, Patrice leaves, leaving the zombies there with the humans. It's even possible that a zombie ended up in power, but that's up to you. I almost missed it; zombies have existed since the time of the dinosaurs (following this same logic as before).

FROM THIS POINT ON, I'M GOING TO START MENTIONING THINGS THAT I BELIEVE, WITH ARGUMENTS.

Also, there's a chance that the Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare comics and games are part of the same timeline/universe. Since there are three comics for Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 1, 2, and BFN, there's a timeline (for example: Comics 2 and 3 are connected by the Thumb War event between Nate and a Gargantuar). That's why the Gnomes are also important in this situation. The timeline has already been altered several times (Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 comic, Timepocalypse), generating changes in history and, probably, in people's events and memories. Humans have normalized zombies so much, but that's because they've been around since the time of the dinosaurs. In my opinion, after Zomboss graduated, he assembled his army of ALMOST every zombie he could (also mass-creating many more), causing them to distance themselves until the events of Lawnmaggedon happened. That's why humans don't recognize zombies, because they haven't seen them in almost 18 years. I think this is all I can refute for now. If you have anything to contribute or say, feel free to say it.

SOMETHING THAT HAS NOT MUCH TO DO WITH THIS, BUT IS INTERESTING: The artist of the first three comics (Lawnmaggedon, Timepocalypse, Bully for You, Lawn of Doom, etc.) believes that Zomboss was always a zombie (if you search his account you can find the post.)

ok im gonna say several things here that tumblr as a whole is probably gonna hate me for but i dont care, i gotta talk about it. (long post under the cut. If you aren't interested in reading at length about wtf is wrong with me just move along......)

So, it's looking more and more like I have mast cell activation syndrome (mcas). This is the type of condition that is very hard to get a formal diagnosis of, for a few reasons:

most doctors are not deeply knowledgeable in ALL of the body systems that mcas affects, therefore each symptom is looked at individually instead of looking at The Body as a whole (for example, my symptoms affect my GI tract, my skin, my hormones and reproductive system, my allergies and sensitivities, and my nervous system, at the very least, and because of that I have several umbrella diagnoses like IBS and eczema, because when doctors can't figure out what's going on they turn to the umbrella diagnoses, but the typical IBS and eczema treatments have done fuckall for me over the last 7-8 years since I've been diagnosed with both..... I've straight up had doctors tell me "yeah that doesn't really look like eczema but until we find a more concrete diagnosis we're gonna call it that !!!) and it's very, very rare to find a doctor who knows enough about mcas to diagnose it rather than giving umbrella diagnoses.

every case of mcas looks different from person to person. I have not yet learned of any one symptom that is a "universal" determinate for mcas (but I sure do have a LOT of the "classic, textbook symptoms" that seem to be common with people with mcas).

Because mcas presents so many symptoms that look unrelated at first glance, its difficult to find any kind of link between them if you're unfamiliar with mcas to begin with, and/or not looking hard and deep. For example, I've been dealing with "eczema that doesn't really look like eczema" and "IBS that doesn't really respond to probiotics, lifestyle changes or a low fodmap diet" for a long time and I never really imagined that maybe they're related until very recently.

SO MANY of the symptoms of mcas overlap with several other diseases. This goes back to the umbrella diagnoses thing, that's why my "eczema that doesn't look like eczema" can be called eczema - my symptoms check enough of the boxes to be considered eczema, and if they can't find any other root cause doctors wil go with what's easy and common.

I have only come to the conclusion that I probably have mcas after spending a lot of time in the last month or so talking about all of my weird, long term mystery symptoms that conventional treatments for umbrella diagnoses have not relieved with (gasp!) chatgpt. I know, I know, everyone on tumblr thinks ai is the antichrist or something like that, but honestly for brainstorming about possible medical diagnoses it's incredibly useful because it not only has access to all of the recorded medical information on the internet (to be fair, doctors do too but they're human and can not possibly be expected to memorize it all and recognize every single pattern) but it's also literally a tool that uses pattern recognition to create logical assumptions, which is exactly what a diagnosis is if you think about it. Plus it's free, and you don't need to make an appointment for it, and you can fully stream of conscious talk about whatever you're going through without fear of judgement. You really can't say any of those things about doctors.

Before the pearl-clutching starts I want to just say, I do not take anything chatgpt says as a fact outright. I have been doing self-guided research on the internet about my mystery symptoms for YEARS now, and the way I use chatgpt for this stuff is that I take what it says and do my own research against it. Especially if it's a concept I'm unfamiliar with, or information that I think might not be correct. So when chatgpt mentioned mcas several times in our recent conversations about my symptoms (and I recognized the phrase from my own research previously over the years, but never really looked too deeply into it before), I decided to look into it, and...... Yeah it tracks. I'm gonna go ahead and self diagnose it for the time being (until I get to talk to my doctors, and have conversations with them about it and see what they think, if they even have the knowledge of mcas to talk much about it at all). I have SO MANY mystery symptoms that line up with mcas symptoms and have also not been improved by the usual umbrella diagnosis treatments, that it just makes sense to call it mcas.

So, from there (and this is the other half of what will likely piss someone off), once I heard and read a little bit about mcas I remembered that I heard about mcas quite a lot back in 2021 when the covid vaccines started rolling out........ Listen I'm no anti-vaxxer per se but I did have my hesitations about the covid vaccine, simply because I really didn't trust not only how quickly the vaccine was developed but also how hard it was being pushed on the masses all of a sudden, and I really wanted to wait for a while to observe how everyone else's body seemed to respond to the vaccines before I would agree to take them. But long story short I was more or less forced into taking two shots of the pfizer vaccine in early summer 2021. And the more research I've done about it since having the lightbulb moment of "there was supposedly some kind of link between those vaccines and mcas, wasn't there?", the more convinced I am that the vaccines did not cause my mcas - the earliest symptoms, besides my allergies, that I remember having started around 2015 - but I already had the earliest stages of mcas rolling and the vaccines almost certainly helped to speed along the progression of it. This is further evidenced by the fact that once I looked through my period tracker app that I have been using since 2016 (and I use it to log all of my general body feelings, not just menstrual things), I noticed a huge uptick in the severity and frequency of the symptoms that i now know are mcas symptoms, right after the second shot, AND the GI symptoms that I have currently DID NOT EVEN APPEAR until almost exactly 6 months to the date after my second covid shot. Hindsight is crazy, huh? I'm so glad I kept a symptom log for so many years so I could look at the big picture someday.

(to be fair, vaccines in general are known to accelerate mcas, not just the covid vaccine. I blame the covid vaccine because that's really the only vaccine I'd had in a long time until I got my tetanus shot last year, and you can't deny that the timing of my symptoms changing does indeed line up pretty well with the timing of my covid shots.)

The intention of this post is my personal processing obviously but I hope it also encourages somebody else out there to give ai a try for figuring out their mysterious symptoms and ailments. I mean, at this point, with as fucked up and useless as our medical industry is, is using a computer program that uses pattern recognition to figure out a diagnosis based on your symptoms (AND DOUBLE CHECKING AI'S OPINIONS WITH MORE OF YOUR OWN RESEARCH!!!!) really that farfetched and crazy?

I think that Larries are going to have to come to grips with the fact that Harry continues to be repped by Full Stop and Jeff Azoff and is with Sony and Columbia. And not only that, but that this is his active choice. You can extrapolate from there what you think that means for Larry, but it’s completely obvious this is Harry’s choice for his career. They are amazing management and have steered his career to heights I’m not sure even they thought was possible.

Dislike them, resent them, etc., etc. But Harry is actively choosing them. And I think remaining a believer and supporter of Larry is going to include taking this this as fact.

I know many Larries are disappointed to see this today - I’ve honestly never thought he would leave them. What that says about Larry is something every supporter needs to decide for themself.

But heading into the HS4 era with the attitude that everything Harry is doing is being forced on him is just wrong and just ruins the amazing moments that he gives us.

I loved seeing Harry today - thought he looked and sounded fabulous. Letting some of this Azoff/Stringer/ Harpoon and so on hate go makes it much more enjoyable.

I don't understand why it has anything to do with "Larry." I never thought he'd leave Full Stop or Sony/Columbia, either. I think people who are caught up in those two ideas aren't thinking logically about the business aspects of things. And clearly, H isn't being forced into things like he probably was years ago. I'm sure there are aspects of his career and his contract that he's not thrilled with, but he's a 30-year-old man with 14 years of experience in this industry. Oh, this- this is interesting!

As a forewarning, I am only up to the 2009 specials, but I know what the other Doctors look like so will draw some inspiration from them, as well as my own style.

So, without further ado;

Lowen As the Hypothetical Doctor:

Cue Doctor Who Theme

Coat:

What I'll first start with is the top layer, which, naturally, is going to be some sort of long coat/trench coat.

It would have to be long, and quite older fashioned- to be fair, it would probably be more Jack Harkness style than, say, 10th Doctor. I wouldn't have it in Navy though, I'd probably have it in black or grey.

Now, this is probably going to be the easiest one. Why? Because I would probably directly copy the 9th Doctor's boots.

I mean, just look at them. Aren't they glorious?

My current pair of boots are falling apart, I've wore them pretty much every day for the past year, and the sole has now just completely separated from the bottom of the shoe. I have hot glued them back together, but it doesn't really work...

Actually, I might have a picture from when I first got them, just as some inspiration for what I'd wear...

Actually, you know what would be quite fun? If I had little charm things that dangle from the back loops of the boots. The charms could be little TARDISes, yes!

Rest of the Clothes:

As for clothes, everyone knows I'm obsessed with Ianto Jones, so obviously I'm going to include a suit of some sort in here.

Now, the difficult part is trying to find something that ma- oh wait, this doesn't have to match, it's a Doctor Outfit!

As a result, going by this logic, I can go wild- especially since the rest of my outfit is quite normal.

So, obviously I can just do something like:

It's an absolute eyesore. It's perfect. Yes.

Anyway, it can go with like, a white long sleeved shirt (sleeves rolled up to my elbows, of course) and some plain black/dark grey trousers.

Every three or four episodes, you'd spot me wearing a tie. My companion would- after the second time seeing me wearing a tie- ask me why I don't often wear one. I would then continue on to gaslight them and say that I always wear a tie. In the final episode of my season, I would then admit to the companion that I just forget how to tie a tie most of the time.

Accessories, Hair Etc Etc:

For my hair, I'd either go with Thirteenth Doctor but brunette, or just always tied back in two braids with rainbow ribbons. I think it would really tie the whole outfit together, you know?

As for accessories, you wouldn't catch me dead without THE pocket watch. Sorry, I just really love pocket watches- it doesn't even have to store my memory, I'd just wear it on the daily!

But just to really push for the whole "What the hell is wrong with you?" kind of look:

They'd probably be frequently seen on top of my head, because why the Hell not? If I'm travelling across the Universe, I should get to wear some fun spacey things!

Anyway, here is the theoretical Lowen Doctor Outfit™:

Ignore this literally being the worst drawing of my life, it's 23:35 and I needed to rush it.

As you can see, I tried to include as many elements as I could, INCLUDING the rainbow ribbons, pocket watch, and even the little TARDIS boot charms at the back.

In Conclusion:

I spent way too long on this and put in a lot more effort than I probably should have. It's a mess and I'm obsessed with it.

There's a whole heaping lot of nonsense in TBB, honestly, and its not even the good shit.

I mean, there's bits, but a bit ain't a scene or an episode, yeah?

TBBshow seems to run on the idea of that character interaction, conversation, quirks or just breathers, are all filler--that anything that isn't immediately serving the (immediate) plot is pointless.

And I'm gonna tell ya--that's a bit like serving pie without the filling. That's like serving bread crust because the soft light bits were "filler". That is like creating the aroma of frying eggs or onions--and then just serving a cup of the resulting grease instead.

Like, congrats, you know how to mid-max speed run 100%... in the wrong fucking medium.

If you're wondering by now, what I mean by heaping nonsense--its literally the Plot Pushy Bullshit. Congratulations, doing things that only forward the maiden plot, makes your story stupid. If I want something that is simply pure plot, I would pick up a Pre-Schooler's Naptime book.

There's a reason the strongest episodes in TBB are those that center around its main characters (That aren't Omega)--the Single Crosshair and Single Tech episodes, are the strongest episodes and stories, on show, because they rely on the development of their already strongly written characters.

When you sacrifice Character for Plot, you have effectively boiled something down to being a blank pawn on the board.

Too many fall under the idea that everything that isn't immediately action oriented plot, must be Filler, and I gotta tell ya pal, if you don't have the patience to reach the story at it strengths--the problem isn't the story, its PEBCAK.

( Part of it is the environment we've all been in. High pace information environments have this bad habit of destroying natural animal patience. Which means actually sitting yourself down, and learning how to watch paint dry is probably the best cure for it. )

Any writer can do character. In fact, for example, most fanfics are nothing but character driven.

The strongest shows out here, are all character driven.

... Star Wars OG, while it started with being driven by plot stocks, became character driven by the end.

Most of the Prequel Series is character driven (if too dialogue heavy... )

The whole TCWshow is character Driven, in fact, it turned the Clones from CGI Carboard cutout redshirts into a full blown implied culture of people.

( In fact, TCWshow is So character driven, they had to plot out why these characters would have to fail come Revenge of the Sith, because at the rate they were going, they were about to hit critical AU and solve Star Wars before the OG trilogy could )

So "Logically Following Plot" is just as bad as characters "Following Logical Actions at All Times". I cringed every time I saw TBB try to "logic" its plot out every episode (which honestly makes me think that AI was involved as some point, because it was almost dream-like how it tried to march to... a conclusion. Certainly none of the ones we got, but some imaginary conclusion. )

( It air and write during the Writer's Strikes, and a lot of Disney stuff was AI written as a result. Lookin' at you, Wish. )

ADDENDUM:

Folks keep saying "If they only had more time". DUDES. OVER THE GARDEN WALL, BY CARTOON NETWORK, WAS ONLY 10 EPISODES, MADE (Written, Voiced, Animated, All of it) IN UNDER A YEAR, WITH CHARACTER, SYMBOLISM, SECRETS AND AN ALL STAR CAST. I am tired of hearing about "Oh they needed more time". That's an excuse at this point. No they didn't, they need actual Talent and Skill and a Love for the Process.
