Thanks to this art, Kiki's Delivery Service Thorki is the next thing my scattered brain wants to focus on. Thor is born a rare exception to the witches are girls rule, so his mom goes ahead and trains him as one. She takes in Loki who was cast out of his witch family for being trans and a shape shifter. So when it's time for both to go on their young witch journey as teens, Loki travels as Thor's cat, and they head off to find a new place to explore.

The folks in the city they land in are pretty nervous when a huge teen boy shows up on an axe declaring he's the new witch in town, but strange emergencies keep arising that Thor can help with, and it endears him to the locals. Just like Kiki does unusual witch duties, Thor ends up as a sort of local hero/handy strongman who pulls people from sinking boats and also can relocate a car for you by chaining it to his flying axe for a fee.

Loki meanwhile is brewing up potions and skin care products in their lodgings next to the bakery to bring in money...when he's not prowling the town as a cat causing mayhem and mischief that Thor then cleans up.

At night Lokitty hops onto their bed after Thor climbs in, then transforms in his human form and they settle their daily disputes 😗😗🍆🍑 and then snuggle up to sleep.

Concept: post IW, pre EG. Thor finds a cat on his doorstep, injured and weak, and decides to take it in. He names it Loki, for its deep black fur and its brilliant green eyes, and its mischievous nature. The cat is actually Loki, stuck in Cat form while he heals both seidr wise and physically wise. When EG rolls around, Loki is almost completely healed. Thor brings him along and every meeting thingy has Lokitty in his lap, while Loki is debating if shifting back is wise in a room of the Avengers

Loki changes back during a particularly boring meeting and just sits in Thor’s lap hugging him so that he’s facing away from the Avengers and if he can’t see them they can’t see him, right? It doesn’t work.

Writing doesn’t have to be realistic... But.

I’m serious. It doesn’t. Go ahead. Your characters can find true love in just a second. They can knock down a thousand henchmen before reaching the Big Boss. They can wield unlimited powers. They can turn out the be The One.

Is it unrealistic? Probably. Is it fun? Yes.

It’s fiction. It doesn’t need to be realistic.

But.

Writing doesn’t have to be realistic, but it needs to be consistent.

Realistic = compared to the rules of the reality outside your story, the reality you and I live in (most of the time).

Consistent = compared to the rules of the reality inside your story.

What I mean when I use the word “rules”

I don’t mean “You’re not supposed to do X in this society.” I mean rules that describe reality, not prescribe it. Rules that are as inescapably tied to your story’s reality as gravity is tied to ours.

Examples:

Why do we accept that Disney princesses live happily ever after with someone they just met? It may be unrealistic, but it’s consistent.

Why do we accept that one set of superheroes in one universe can wield unlimited powers without facing consequences (Superman etc.) and another set of superheroes can’t (The Incredibles)? Because the writers of each universe have made it clear to us that these are the rules.

“But, Bookish Diplodocus… My character is The One!”

“My character is the One who breaks all the rules nobody ever thought could be broken.”

“I’m not breaking the rules, my character is an exception to the rules!”

“Their arrival has been foretold by Legends! They are Special!”

That may very well be. I enjoy reading the The One trope just as much as the next person. But just know that if you break your own rules, your reader may feel cheated.

So you need to do it well.

If you have established certain rules and you create an exception, you have to make it believable that the rule has an exception.

A well-executed exception

Well, take The Matrix for example. (Spoilers ahead, obviously.)

Neo is the exception. What is the rule? The rule isn’t that the Matrix exists. All the rebels know that. The rule is that no-one can manipulate reality. Jesus. Obviously no-one can manipulate reality. Do you take us for idiots? And then one guy shows up who can.

Why do we accept the existence of this one individual? Along with Neo, we are gradually led to realize it. Trinity believes he is the One. But what does she know anyway? Morpheus believes it too. Morpheus, as a mentor figure, has more authority, so we start to believe it. Neo doesn’t, not entirely, not yet. And then we start to see it, slowly, with ups and downs. There is a training session, a breakthrough moment, a failure, people around him start to doubt, but some keep faith. The Oracle says Neo may become the One, but isn’t the One yet. It’s only during the finale of the movie that Neo truly becomes the One.

The character arc from Thomas Andersen to Neo to the One is the whole story arc of the movie. It’s done slowly and well-executed.

A badly executed exception

I’m gonna make one up, because I’m a kind person, I don’t want to drag other people down. But we’ve all read books with heroes like the one I’m going to describe.

The hero is a teen or just a regular guy. Nothing special. They come into their powers, or start training, or… Within a few months/years/chapters they surpass the level of their mentor/teacher/champion/authority figure, who’s been doing this for at least 112 years. No need to think this is weird, reader. This character is the One, remember? I showed you the Legend that foretells his arrival in chapter 2.

While the character arc in the Matrix is done slowly, this fictitious bad example is done within the scope of a few chapters. Quickly level-up the character, so that we can get to “the real story”. And that’s the mistake.

So, next time a reader tells you something is unrealistic, they mean it’s unbelievable within the reality of your story. You don’t necessarily need to cut it. Go back and fix it.

When you could finally stop laughing, you looked up at Strange with Autumn curled in your arms.  “You of all people should understand that not all familiars are cats,” you teased him.  “Autumn here chose me, and Fenna chose Loki,” you explained, introducing the familiars.  Autumn stretched toward Strange to sniff him.  

/Magic/ she said in your mind.  

You smiled and scratched behind her ears.  “Yes, Doctor Strange has magic.  He’s our friend.  We’re here to help him,” you explained to her.  You looked up at Strange apologetically.  “She’s new and young. She’ll learn in time,” 

Strange nodded, though still looked at her and the wolf suspiciously.  “A familiar chose him?” He asked, indicating Loki.  He and Loki still didn’t really see eye to eye, though the attempted to be civil to each other.  

Loki rolled his eyes and cuddled Fenna close.  “Yes, she did.  It isn’t common on Asgard for familiars to choose a mage to accompany, though it is not completely unheard of, as you should remember with Sera, as she originated from Asgard,” he reminded Strange.  He gave you an apologetic look.  He tried not to bring up Sera.  They all did. They knew it still pained you to talk about her.  

You gave him a reassuring smile.  “It’s alright, Lokitty,” 

Loki groaned at the nickname, especially in front of Strange.  Strange smirked at the embarrassing nickname that hadn’t gone away, despite that Loki’s cat ears and tail had gone away. Strange also liked making fun of Loki whenever possible.  The two didn’t get along except grudgingly.  

Loki summoned a dagger to threaten Strange with.  Strange rolled his eyes and both of them summoned their magic.  You placed a placating hand on both of their arms.  “Boys.  Why don’t we fix the problems with the magic students, then you two can solve this problem in the usual manner,” you reminded them.  You were here for a reason and they needed to get past their issues with each other to fix the problem with Strange’s students. 

Loki scoffed and rolled his eyes. “You know I can take this second rater sorcerer,” he told you. “And I don’t need him making fun of me,” he grumbled.  

“Ergo why the usual manner is effective,” you replied.  You looked between the two.  “Do you agree to the terms?” You had things to do and you’d smack some sense into both of them if they couldn’t behave.  

Loki huffed and vanished his dagger “Fine,” he grumbled, though had a gleam in his eyes.  He liked this game with Strange.

“Fine,” Strange agreed. 

“You two just want to spar again,” you accused them, pinching the bridge of your nose.  They both laughed with childish grins.  You rolled you eyes.  The usual method of them getting their annoyance out with each other was sparring with nothing but Harry Potter spells.  It was a fair battle that way, as it was a magic system that neither of them actually used.  Loki still won, but it was a fun activity and a way for them to relieve some stress. 

With that settled, you all headed up to the training room to see what Strange’s students had gotten themselves into that time…

Two hours and lots of complicated magic work later and you finally had all of the students back on this realm and not halfway through portals.  The twins were also separated again into their own bodies.  You had no idea what had caused the magical malfunction, nor did you really want to.  All you knew was that Strange swore that it wouldn’t happen again.

With that settled, he and Loki threw all the students out of the classroom to blow off some steam. You could tell they both needed it.  You would be off on the sideline reffing the match to make sure they both behaved.  You held Autumn in your arms.  She was dozing, tired from your use of magic to help the students.  Fenna curled up at your feet to doze as well, as save with you as she’d be with Loki. 

“Draw your wands,” you told Strange and Loki.  If they were fighting with Harry Potter spells, they had to follow the rules of Harry Potter combat.  They both rolled their eyes as neither of them usually used wands with magic.  That was another point of this exercise, to expand both of their magical minds.  

Loki summoned an ebony wand, which he held surprisingly proficiently.  Especially for not usually working with wands.  Apparently, he’d been practicing. There was just an ease in which he hold it that said he knew what he was doing.  Strange grabbed his wand through a portal and the cloak of levitation flew over to settle on your shoulders.  This was supposed to be a fair match after all. 

You quietly pulled out your phone to record the madness as they both approached each other and saluted with their wands.  They’d watched that scene in Chamber of Secrets too many times it seemed.  They turned and strode a few paces apart before they turned again to face each other.  After a polite bow, the match began. 

For neither of them used to using Harry Potter spells as their main source of magic, they were surprisingly proficient at it.  Spells went flying from their wands, both verbal and nonverbal.  Unforgivable curses were, of course, forbidden, but that didn’t stop stinging hexes, an itching curse, the leg locking curse, Loki being disgusted by the bat bogey hex, and others as they flew back and forth in green sparks from Loki’s wand and gold sparks from Strange’s.  Loki finally won the match with a combination of rictumsempra and incarcarous, which had Strange laughing helplessly on the floor as he was tickled.  

You ended the video and declared Loki the winner before you lifted the spells.  You were all laughing by then and Loki and Strange were much more relaxed for blowing off some steam.  

It was usually a bad idea to blow magic on such silly games, but sometimes it was necessary.  And sometimes, especially in Loki’s case, he needed to burn off extra magic before it got out of control.  He had so much that he had to use it or too much of it built up.  You had the same problem on occasion, though not as badly since you’d gotten the jewel to store your excess magic in.  It would also be easier for you both now that you had familiars.  Loki would learn that with time.  For now, it was enough that he was laughing and happy and he and Strange weren’t at each other’s throats.

It didn’t hurt that you had a lovely video to upload to YouTube and the team’s social media.  Publicity didn’t hurt, especially publicity that made the magicians seem more human, more relatable, and remind the world that Loki wasn’t evil.  They trusted him now, and you wanted to make sure it stayed that way.  Seeing magical games, seeing him laughing and having fun, would definitely help that cause.

Yesterday, I gave myself time to just stop everything and grieve and breathe. 

I read a lot of pet loss articles, especially ones centered around the particular traumatic grief that comes from the way Fox passed. I didn't get out of bed until noon (though partially that was organ inflammation issues and exhaustion) and then I went around town and removed the missing dog flyers. Whenever I needed to stop and cry, I let myself do that. I moved very slowly and got myself some food and ate for the first time since Thursday. (Again, organ issues - I was stressed enough that it made my organs completely riot so I physically could not eat because stomach expanding/bowels moving and touching neighboring inflamed/bleeding organs is an instant recipe for intense agony and food not staying down.)

Today I made plans for the future. Summer trips to the river with the dogs (and Lokitty because she's clingy). Fun (disease-friendly) recipes for food and drinks for me to bring to work. I worked on my yard for a few minutes with the intent to continue through the week - it's severely overgrown and I want to make a little memorial to put in Fox's favorite spot. I walked my pups in the shade of the forest.

I went to the gym and took a long shower after working out for the first time in a week. It's 100 degrees here now and the sun is shining.

I'm constantly watching videos of compilations I made of Fox at the beach. The SPCA had me take him years ago for fostering because he had bites on his record, including one that broke someone's finger. He had huge mental issues affected by neurological problems, but they also meant that on the flip side of his tendencies to veer straight into terror, he also could be just as easily veered into pure joy. His brain would "snap" into fun with the right triggers. I captured those moments and am burying them in my memories.

There's been a huge outpouring of love in my life. This dog met a lot of people, who loved him even if it took months before they could touch him. Even those that are no longer at my work have memories of me coming out to the little dog yard to pick up Fox and his brothers, and his brain shooting straight into MOM YAY TIME TO GO HOME WITH MOM MOM so badly that my coworkers and I would have to try for entire minutes to get him to realize where the fence opened (you know, in the same spot it always had for years) so he could get through to me - even after my other dogs had gone through it right in front of him. He was ruled by his emotions, pure and simple - and every month throughout the years he was more and more ruled by the positive ones. It seemed like every day these last six months one of my coworkers would come up to me as I was clocking out from grooming and say "Fox was in a good mood today" or an excited "Fox let me touch him! He was super sweet!" The most recent of the new employees never even felt real fear with petting him because he wasn't showing them his other side. I was out in the yard last week, and he was wantonly rubbing against one of the new girls who proclaimed "he's like a cat." One of my other newer coworkers, Tom, a huge guy in his 40s and absolutely riddled with tattoos, spent all the time he wasn’t sleeping or working Friday and Saturday helping me out with the search because Fox was his “homie.”

I'll miss my baby boy. I won't be able to avoid the guilt and grief about the way I lost him. No amount of logic can help that. But I'm constantly telling myself and the others in the community who have reached out to me with severe regret about not being able to catch him that this was not a premeditated event. No one had evil in their hearts planning this - it was just bad luck.

Life goes on for the rest of us. 

Fourth of July, hanging with Fox in my friend’s car - Fox and I were both homeless at this point because of medical bills from a surgery I’d had several months before. (My insurance would only cover the hospital stay, not the surgeons or anesthesiologist.)

New home, no heating in the winter, which meant even Fox came around for snuggles. (He normally would get too hot.)

Walking with my dogs, foster dogs and babysitting dogs. I was actually walking 9 total here, but only so many would fit into the shot. Fox was always super willing to accept other dogs (and cats) coming into his life.

Happy after a run through the woods.

Playing with Pan on the beach. Generally the play involved Fox not in total control of his body going full tilt towards oblivious Pan and then slamming into him before continuing off in a frolic while Pan barked and reeled in irritated confusion.
