ron/chris prompt. we’ve seen how Chris is when Ron gets hurt but what about if the roles were reversed and Chris got hurt on a call? Imagine if Ron was on deployment at the time although i’m not sure how that would work because with DADT would they even be allowed to be each other’s emergency contact? I don’t know. I think it’d probably be Sarah and she would then have to inform Ron or something. Just wanna know your thoughts.

Technically speaking they could have each other listed and claim roommates. That’s the entire point of don’t ask don’t tell. Their superiors can’t ask unless someone says something that implies or a soldier tells about homosexual behavior. (1994)

So yes. Ron would be called. He could show up to the hospital but medical treatment is another thing. Unfortunately boyfriends/girlfriends couldn’t make medical decisions for them. A family member would have to. It was fucked up. So in Ron’s case that would be Sarah. In Chris’s it would be his sister Rebecca. (Keep in mind they would have to keep it this way until 2010.)

That being said it’s time for me to cause them pain.

In 1995 Ron was called into his superior officers office.

He has to just stand there and nod as he’s told that Chris is in a coma. Chris is in a coma, and Jake is with Chris’s sister.

Oh god Jake.

Freak accident they’re saying. Load bearing beams fell on him. They don’t know much other then he’s stable, has broken ribs and a leg.

When Ron comes back to their room and sees Tom he whines. It makes Tom’s head shoot up. “Ronnie? What’s wrong.”

He opens his mouth and closes it again. He can’t be here on a ship thousands of miles away from Chris and Jake. How dare he do that to them. “Chris.”

Ron watches as Tom process what was just said to him. “Okay is he alive?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay where’s Jake?”

“Becca’s.”

Tom comes closer and pulls Ron onto the couch. He sits so Ron can lean against his chest. “And Chris?”

Ron shudders. He starts crying for real. “Coma. Some broken things.”

Tom inhales. God. He feels his own tears start for Chris. “Can we leave early? Get to Texas?” Ron shakes his head. “Asked. They said no. Have to stay the rest of the month.”

Tom wipes at his eyes. “Mav can go. Bradley can stay with Sarah.”

Ron sits upright. He scrubs at his face. “What kind of boyfriend am I. What kind of father. Christ I’m just like my dad.”

Tom smacks Ron. “You are never allowed to say that you are nothing like him. It’s not like you wanted to be on a ship when this happened. We got called for flight we aren’t even technically supposed to fly anymore. How were you supposed to know Chris would be in a freak accident.”

Ron nods. He knows this. But god. Jake is only 8. He should have one of his dads around.

Tom pulls Ron back down, he starts running his fingers through his hair. “It’ll be okay. He’ll wake up, I’ll call Mav in the morning he’ll show up and tell us how bad it actually is.” - “I want to throw up. I can’t loose him.” - “you won’t.”

When Mav sets foot into the room the first thing he thinks is he’s never seen Chris not moving. It’s a very unnerving sensation.

He flips through Chris’s chart. Shit. He’s got some burns on his leg under the cast. He’s going to be pissed about those.

Otherwise it seems like they are waiting for him to come out of the coma on his own, a good sign.

He walks to the nearest phone and dials the number he was given. “He’s fine. Waiting for him to wake up on his own. New burns but not bad. He’ll be okay Sli.”

When Ron gets the message he collapses into Tom’s arms. They don’t care who sees them this time around. “Mav says he’ll be fine.” Tom lets out a breath he didn’t know he was still holding.

“Three weeks until you’re back home. We can do that.”

Ron grabs onto Tom’s wrist. “Can you come for a day. I know you’ve obviously gotta get back to Bradley but please.” Tom hugs him. “Course. I gotta make sure that fool of yours is okay.”

When they show up in Texas Chris is on crutches. His ribs are wrapped, Jake is helping him cook.

Ron just walks in and Tom follows. He gets a yelled dad from Jake. The kid slams into his legs. “Hey chickie you take care of your dad while I was gone?”

Jake nods, “yeah! But aunt Sarah helped some once Mav left.”

Tom moved to take over things at the stove, but before he did he held onto Chris. Tom kisses his head and then gently pushes him to Ron.

Ron is crying a bit. When Chris reached him he puts his arms around Ron’s neck. It’s a stretch and the doctors probably said not to do stuff like that because of his ribs. He doesn’t care. It’s now he’s always hugged Ron. That’s not going to change.

“I love you so much.”

“I love you, sorry you had to get that kind of phone call.”

Ron shakes his head. He picks up Jake, Chris kisses the side of Jake’s head. “Chickie here has been a fabulous help. Some of the guys from the station are helping out also. But Mav was a lifesaver that first week.”

Tom laughs “don’t tell him that.”

Ron looks at his family. He can’t believe he almost lost Chris. But if he keeps thinking about it he’ll go insane. Chris is fine he’s breathing.

He’s going to have nightmares about this for months though.

Leo frowns at his phone.

Or more specifically, at the test on his phone.

Around him, he hears the sound of his brothers tapping their own devices, much faster than he is. Looking up just makes Leo feel worse about his own progress - or lack-thereof.

Mikey’s the fastest, speeding through the test like nobody’s business. He’d been the one to make them all do this stupid test in the first place, so it makes sense that he’s having a blast.

Raph’s slower than Mikey is, but he’s still clearly answering the questions at a steady pace. Sometimes he looks unsure, but he powers through anyway.

Donnie often looks frustrated, which relieves Leo somewhat because at least someone is struggling like him. But that “struggle” isn’t nearly as big as his own, considering that Donnie is answering about as fast as Raph is.

Leo turns his gaze back down to his own test. He’s still near the beginning, he thinks.

He’d put the same answer for the past seven questions - the middle of the road answer, neither a “yes” or a “no.” Then, whenever he does come across one that is more one direction than the other, he second guesses himself and restarts the test!

Sure, there are a few he could definitely give a yes or a no to, but…never the “strongly agree” or “strongly disagree” that the test seemed to want from him.

He eyes his twin sitting nearby, the softshell absorbed in the test. Maybe Leo should copy what Donnie put for some of these…

“DONE!” Mikey’s shout makes Leo freeze in place just as he started to lean over.

“What?” Donnie squawks, “No way you’re already finished, you must’ve been cheating!”

“It’s a personality test, Dee!” Mikey stuck his tongue out, “You can’t cheat at those!”

…

Leo settles back into his seat.

Ignoring Donnie’s mutterings about how it was “just because it’s not an academic test” that he didn’t finish first, Raph smiles encouragingly at Mikey.

“Hey, good job! So what’d you get, Mike?”

Mikey looks back down at his test, reading aloud, “Says that I got the “Campaigner”!”

“What’s that mean?” Leo asks, his phone screen going dark.

“Apparently, I’m an “enthusiastic, creative, and sociable free-spirit”.” Mikey reads, smiling at them, “You think it fits?”

“Oh, to a T, bro!” Leo laughs, giving Mikey a thumbs up, making Mikey’s smile grow larger.

Inside, Leo was feeling a lot more mixed about this. He has no idea how Mikey knew himself so well. Maybe Donnie was right and Mikey did cheat, because how could he answer those questions so easily?

Leo’s phone burns in his hand. He keeps it locked.

“Wow, that really is you.” Raph says, his eyes flitting back and forth between his own test and Mikey, “Do you think it fits?”

“I guess? It’s fun to see at least!” Mikey shrugs with a grin.

“Hold on, I think…” Raph makes a noise of satisfaction, “Okay, done!”

“Sigh, now I’m relegated to the straggler group.” Donnie grumbles, his thumbs moving faster as he tries rushing through the questions.

“Ooh, what’d you get Raph?” Mikey asks, practically bouncing in curiosity.

“Says, uh…I got something called the “Consul”?” He squints his eyes to read more, “Uh, “caring, social, and community-minded.””

“Sounds about right to me.” Leo nods. Can’t be more “community-minded” than being a hero.

“Yeah, no one’s more caring than you, Raphie!” Mikey says, moving to lean across Raph’s shell.

“You do put the community in mind, that’s for sure.” Donnie states, not looking up.

Raph chuckles, a bit embarrassed, “Aw, thanks. It’s just some test, but it feels kinda good to hear that.”

Just a test. Right.

Leo unlocks his screen.

The test stares back at him.

Right. Okay. He can do this. He can.

The screen ends up going dark again.

Frustration builds up in Leo. Was he even halfway done with the test? At this rate, soon even Donnie will-

“FINISHED.”

Leo unlocks his phone.

“What’d you get, DonTon?” Leo asks as his thumb taps the top right of the screen.

Donnie puffs up proudly, a self sure grin on his face, “I got the result “Logician” which states that I, obviously, am an “innovative inventor with a thirst for knowledge.” Truly could not have described me better, if I do say so myself.”

“It is pretty accurate.” Raph agrees with a nod, “Even calls you an inventor, so extra accurate.”

“Super accurate.” Mikey jumps in, eyes shining.

“Yes, yes, almost like reading my own character synopsis.” Donnie’s grin had not dwindled since the word “innovative” had left his mouth.

Leo just nods along, eyes on his own screen as he skims the words. “Yeah, kinda creepy how close it got. Could have called you a nerd for extra accuracy, though.”

Donnie turns to him, eyes narrowing, “Have you even finished your test? I can think of a few words that’d describe you fairly well.”

“Test-y, huh?”

Before Donnie can strangle Leo, Raph cuts in.

“Ok, ok, calm it down, guys.” He rolls his eyes before turning to Leo. “But really, you’re not done yet?”

“Leo’s taking this self reflection seriously.” Mikey sports a faux intellectual expression as he gives a jokingly serious nod. “Maybe we all should’ve taken our time.”

“Says the one who sped through the whole thing in a record time.” Donnie mutters.

Leo waves them all off, “Nah, I finished it ages ago.”

He grins when Donnie immediately shoots him a suspicious glare. “Oh, you did, did you? Then what could you have possibly gotten, Nardo?”

“I’m glad you asked!” Leo clears his throat, “Neon Leon just so happens to be an “Entertainer.””

“Ah. That confirms it. This test is meaningless.” Donnie drones.

“Hey-“

“What’s an Entertainer like?” Mikey asks with a tilt of his head, still hanging off of Raph’s shell.

“Glad you asked, Miguel!” Leo exclaims, “It says that “life is never boring” around yours truly~”

He emphasizes this “result” of his by waving his phone with said “result” on screen.

It’s just an image he found of his chosen personality result, but they don’t need to know that.

Raph nods slowly, “Well, I guess that’s true…”

“”Never boring” is one way to put it.” Donnie hums.

“You are pretty fun, Leo!” Mikey says emphatically, because he’s great like that.

“Thank you, thank you, life of the party, right here.” Leo grins, pointing both thumbs at himself.

He’s careful not to go too overboard with it, or else it might tip someone off.

Not that it…really matters. It’s just a test. Like Raph said.

As the topic around him shifts to something else, jumping away from this brief activity as fast as any other among them, Leo finds himself unlocking his phone and pulling up the test again.

Unanswered questions stare at him. He knows what answers Lou Jitsu would pick. He knows what answers Jupiter Jim would pick. Hell, he knows exactly what answers his brothers would pick.

He doesn’t know what answers Leonardo would pick.

Leo stares at the test for a second longer, before he exits the site and throws himself into the conversation happening around him.

It’s just a stupid test, nothing to worry about.

Oh no..In that type of situation, Mc should pray that the brothers never find out about that terminal illness. They also better pray that if they die from that illness that they're going straight to heaven, otherwise that's just a life sentence with the brothers!

I mean, you don't think the evil ancients that were created ever since the creation of mankind don't know a thing about manipulating life itself? I mean, if Lucifer ever so wanted, he could take a living being and separate it from itself - skin from bone- atom by atom. He's done it before, multiple times.

I mean, haven't you heard of realilty flipping demons..? And the seven deadly sins are much higher than those demons, so imagine the possibilities..The only reason why they haven't completely broken your soul and rebuilt it by their will is because..Well, where's the fun in that? They love you for who you are!

So if Mc had a terminal illness, you better pray that it kills them fast or that the brothers don't notice. But I mean, with the pact marks littered all over your body, I think they already knew. At this point their just waiting for you to say something! (The only person who's suffering is yourself..So instead of throwing up and coughing blood, why don't you just ask them to fix it..?) Because at any time they think you're just at the grasp of death - your potential freedom - they could always just snag you back to life and into their arms. I AM SUMMONED? PLOT BRAIN SUMMONED?

I love plotting. It's my favorite part of the writing process. Plot is "things that happen" and the best part of writing is imagining things that happen. I'm going to assume that whoever may be reading this knows how to imagine The Happenings, so I'm gonna be talking more about structure, but in like, a kinda abstract sense.

A good plot is a little bit more than a string of events. Plot is like music: there's variation in rhythm and sound and melody, but ultimately there's cohesion, because it's all one song. You can have a bunch of wild things happening, but no matter how strange, there should be something that links them all together, because you're telling one story.

Plot structures are patterns in stories. I'm pretty sure most of them were developed as analysis tools (as in, story already exists > look! it follows this pattern) rather than as writing tools, but people use them as writing tools because it's a neat little way to organize the chaos that is "shit happens." Stories follow patterns for the same reasons music follows patterns: we enjoy the certainty of hitting certain beats. But we also like being surprised. A good pop song doesn't sound like a random collection of sounds, but it also doesn't sound like the middle slider of other songs.

There is this shared concept in both music and writing: the idea of tension and release. Basically, you're playing with reader expectation: there's an imbalance in the experience (tension), and we want to see that imbalance resolved (release). All the common plot structures deal with this basic pattern:

You set an expectation

There are complications to the expectation

You meet the expectation

And this rhythm is happening on multiple levels in writing. Scenes follow this structure (we're gonna get past that door, we're gonna find the murder weapon, we're gonna collaborate and come up with a plan) and all those scenes feed into the overarching expectation (we're gonna solve this murder!). I usually think of chapters as their own mini-story, part of the larger whole. And I think of scenes as their own mini-story, part of the larger chapter. I have engineer brain. I see the gears spinning in the clock. That's why all my chapters have at least One Important Thing happening, because that's that particular chapter's Step #3.

And One Last Important Thing:

In music, a delayed resolution is almost always more interesting than the standard resolution. In writing, that means you wanna drag out Step #2 for as long as you can. That's where the bulk of the story is happening, that's how you build tension, that's how you get people to turn the page.

So when you write a fake dating fic, those bitches better not get together until the very end. I came here for fake dating, not for real dating, damn it. If you resolve that expectation early on, you better replace it with a different expectation that's just as engaging.

But also don't drag it out for too long. Sorry. The hard part of writing is learning the difference between too short and too long. Writing is unfortunately a nuanced skill which is why my advice is like "do this but not too much teehee." But tension and resolution is just rhythm, you can build a sense for it if you engage with enough stories.

Scientists at Stark Industries frequently make groundbreaking discoveries. Since the work is collaborative, they also usually have long lists of acknowledgements at the end when publishing their research 

Post-NWH fic where someone notices a pattern in the published research from SI: for a period of several years, nearly every paper, from every department in the company, expressed gratitude to... empty space.

The name is not there. Clearly, it's meant to be. The pattern starts slow, with just a few papers, but it's soon present in every single one, and the praise is effusive. (Even during the Blip, researchers thanked this mystery person posthumously)

Then, not long after the return of half the population, the pattern just stops. No more mentions of the mystery team member. No more gaps in the acknowledgements page

Maybe it wouldn't be a big deal, maybe the whole thing would just stay as a niche mystery in the tech world... Except it can't. This question can't stay a small thing

Because Tony Stark, who has never worked with anyone except for occasionally Bruce Banner, thanks this empty space in his published work too.

fake psychic Tim but its just. its just psych. Jason dies and batman goes off the deep end so Tim (instead of becoming robin) starts going ham on the 'tips to the police' bc if the police can deal with the smaller crimes then Tim doesn't have to worry about batman killing a petty thief.

Except he's running himself into the ground and he starts getting sloppy bc he's giving the local police info, and bludhaven info (bc dick) AND probably giving Nightwing info when he can and someone catches him or he leaves a paper trail and then Officer Dick Grayson apprehends him and takes him in for questioning and Tim is like "you can't talk to me without my parents or a lawyer present, I'm a minor. And my parents are in Guatemala, so you better call my lawyer."

and Dick is like "kid you're not in trouble i just need to know who's giving you this information." Because there is NO WAY this kid isn't working with someone. Someone who is using a child to drop off information, which while noble to help the police, is putting this child in danger and tim is like, pretty offended actually. That it's being implied that he COULDN'T do this himself.

So he's like "im not working for anyone."

and Dick is like "you have to be getting the info from somewhere. I just wanna help."

and Tim is like AUGH ADULTS "I just- i figured it out on my own" and its CLEAR that Dick doesn't believe him which is, first off, super insulting, never meet your heroes, and second he shouldn't be talking anyway or admit that he goes out at night or Dick will do something stupid like try to make him stop. So he's like (rolling eyes) "I'm psychic. Are you happy? Can I have my phone call now?"

In my opinion, the reason the reunion scene was skipped was because the author couldn’t figure out a way to write it non-romantically and gave up after a while

it just. the set up to the scene is sooooo romantic. you have lloyd being absolutely devastated at the thought he's not going to see any of his loved ones ever again and that he's been dropped back into his terrible life, to the place he admitted he'd rather die than go back to,,, and then someone knocks at the door and when he opens it this is the sight that greets him:

his best friend, the person he's closest to, the one he's spent years with, the one he promised a peaceful life at his side, the one he wanted to grow old with, the one he sacrificed everything for, the one he effectively gave his life to save, the one he thought he'd never see again, standing at his door, having crossed literal dimensional barriers to get to him, a soft and teary smile on his face as he tells him "i missed you"

like. c'mon.

i'm all for platonic interpretations, i'm aroace, i love me a good best friendship as much as the next guy, but,,,, isn't this,,, like,,, really fucking romantic??? extremely so??? am i??? reading too much into it?? because it feels really, really romantic to me.

and like you say. where do you go from there. what response could lloyd give that doesn't involve throwing himself at javier and clinging to him with all of his strength. what conversation could these two have that doesn't involve them seeing how truly devoted they are to each other. what resolution does their arc together have that isn't them spending the rest of their lives together, at each other's side, like they so dearly wanted to.

but. alas. that wasn't the story bk moon wanted to tell. and that's very much his right. i just think that if he didn't want me to assume there's no in-character and narratively satisfying version of that conversation that doesn't end with them kissing he should've at least tried to give us something. and not completely skipped it lol

Like they're BEST friends dude, they're two sides of the same coin and when they were kids they would do this thing where their 'fingers crossed'/'double-crossed' was them hooking their index fingers in the fingers crossed gesture.

But its,,, gonna be so long dude,,,, the original behemoth was just over 9000 words,,, and I've written 3k words already of the new one and we haven't even reached Jason and Danny reuniting at the gala yet,,, i need to get back to that,,,

and then to answer your questions!! god im almost hesitant to answer because i dont wanna spoil the little fic i had planned for it but also like,, its not like im gonna spoil everything, right? and answering the questions isnt the same as writing the scene down so!!

i love danny and jason's reuniting, like i've thought about it SO much and I've thought about it happening after Danny kills the Joker. I know the reveal could have been before that, and it could have been equally just as dramatic but like??? Thematically, doing it after danny kills the joker is SO good. To me at least.

Because like?? Jason's been in somewhat denial about danny's plan to kill the joker for months. ever since danny told him that he wanted to at the gala. And from Jason's pov its not even technically a plan. He sees his best friend for the first time after five years and his best friend still isn't over his death. He hasn't stepped foot in Gotham since his funeral and now suddenly he's here.

And he's still so full of grief over his death that he tells a masked vigilante that he's going to kill the guy that did it, who lives in said masked vigilante's city. And danny's got that look in his eyes that Jason knows so well that means he's being serious. And yet he still doesn't know if he should believe him or not.

And then he does. Danny kills him. And Jason can't fucking believe it. And when he goes and sees Danny, Danny's hands are still covered in blood. And that reunion? God like a fucking firework show. Danny's so fucking angry, and pissed, and hurt, and so goddamn overjoyed that he's alive and here that he sends them both to the ground, and if he doesn't calm down he's gonna take out the power in a five block radius.

there's just so, so much yelling on Danny's end. And then so much crying, first from Danny and then them both. because god, you're alive. you're here. i've missed you so much. i'm never letting you out of my sights again.

and Joker's death! God I don't want to actually say too much about that, but the way I have it set up thematically makes me actually not want danny to take any part of the joker with him as an offering. and he may actually forego that particular ghost etiquette and offer something else as an offering to Jason in substitute to not bringing him the Joker's heart/head/ritualistic body part.

Because you know what the last thing a man whose been spending the last two decades of his life building himself up to be larger than life would want? A death that's unremarkable. :) and that's all i'll put on the matter for now.

and the batfam!! they technically already know that jason hasn't told danny he was resurrected, and plenty of them have mixed feelings on them. largely bruce and dick i think, considering they saw firsthand how close jason and danny were when they were kids.

Dick was honestly surprised at first when he found out that Jason hadn't told Danny he was alive - and on one hand he understands the reasoning for it, and on the other hand he isn't sure if it was such a good idea. Especially after he sees Danny again after he arrives back in Gotham and sees just how badly Jason's death was still affecting him. But it's not like he's going to try and convince Jason to tell him - he can make his own choices, even if Dick has questions about them.

Bruce has much the same thoughts as Dick, so there's not really much to add here other than he might bring it up once or twice to Jason like, vaguely. And then immediately drops it when Jason shuts him down. He might actually somewhat...?? prefer that Jason hasn't told Danny because that raises a lot of questions and could jeopardize their identities. However, again, Jason can make his own choices and there's not much Bruce can do about it other than disapprove from afar.

Tim who knew of Danny from stalking the Wayne family shares similars sentiments of being surprised that Jason didn't tell Danny, but again, yeah, understands the thought process to some extent. Doesn't bring it up ever.

Everyone else who hadn't seen firsthand how close Danny and Jason are don't really have much opinion on it -- Jason didn't tell his best friend he was alive, great, he also didn't tell them either so it's not like its that much of a surprise. It would've been more of a surprise to them if Jason had told Danny before he told Bruce and co. Damian may make a comment or two about Jason not telling Danny, but its not about how he can't believe he didn't tell him or anything like it.

I MUST ASK. If Hyrule Warriors Link is a sword spirit, can be chime like Fi. Please, I need to know. And if he can, can he chime when he is in a humanoid shape. I am dying at the thought of hurt/comfort, from Sky hearing chimes from him that sound so much like Fi. Auuuugh.

Yes!! Wars can chime like Fi! (In fact, he does so in the 3rd part of Salt and Sea). He can chime as a sword, in his “Hylian” form, and in his Spirit form. His chimes don’t sound like Fi’s- every sword spirit has a unique “tone” or melody.

And YES!!! He does, on multiple occasions, chime to calm Sky down. You’re reading my mind, my friend. As we SPEAK I’m sketching Sky and Wars stuff. (Mostly Sky and Ghirahim stuff but Wars is there too haha). But YES. Sky will have flashbacks, he will have nightmares, he will have panic attacks. Someone will touch his shoulders without warning, or they’ll tease him and call him “Sky child,” not knowing the significance behind the playful nickname. Wars will teleport in a flurry of blue and green diamonds, he’ll catch the Avian staring at the diamond in his chest.

Sky LOVES Wars, you must understand. He WANTS to spend time with him, he wants to know him, he wants to help him know himself. But sometimes… sometimes he reminds him of… someone else…

And in those instances, Wars will chime out a soft tune, trying to embody a different Sword Spirit, adopting her tactics to calm the hero that was originally her Master- now his. Fi’s sword stays silent at Sky’s side, but Wars is able to keep Sky centered. Not because Sky is able to hear Fi in his gentle chimes, not because he is his Master. But, Wars comes to realize, because his presence is enough. The care he takes in calming the Avian is enough. Not Master and Spirit, no. It works because they're friends.
