My takes of what each song is about/inspired by under cut (but, if you feel like it, tell me yours :D)

I’m picturing all of these to be from Adrien’s perspective so they reflect mostly his version of the situations rather than the objective reality (especially the Laybug centered ones)

Deux Semaines (feat Ladybug): This one would focus on the sequence in Multiplication where Monarch doesn’t attack and how LadyNoir’s relationship recovers from the events of Season 4.

TTCD: Kept the “Catboy” singular because while there are multiple Catboy identities, there is only one boy underneath them all. Hence while I think it would be about him just stating his issues with everything, it would also focus on loneliness and how his department is understaffed :(

MLAOHFP: All of the Season 4 LadyNoir separation arc angst, with the “Favourite” being a callback to Risk (and kinda a jab at Rena because he thinks that she’s really her favourite, but y’ know, she didn’t abandon her so Rena can’t be her actual favourite)

Down Bad: Mainly about how Chat’s love for LB makes him excuse her behaviors, but also makes him act out (maybe a reference to Elation).

SL,L: About the whole arc of Gabriel sending Adrien to London and all of the memories he would have surrounding this ordeal - key point, not “So Long, Paris” because he didn’t want to leave, and in the end he comes back to a changed world.

BDILH: This one’s either about the Chat Blanc breakup or Gabriel’s dislike of Marinette in Season 5 (or both, with maybe a line about how he feels like this has happened before)

FOTS: Adrien realizing his father is a Bad Person.

Akuma !!! (feat Monarch): This one would be like a song about his daily life and then the chorus would start with a shout of “Akuma!!!” and it would switch to him as Chat Noir. I feel like it would start out with normal life being boring/hero life being fun but as it goes on he grows exhausted. Monarch has a rap verse.

Guilty As Sin?: Chat Blanc centeric - would ask who is to blame for the destruction of the world, like is it Chat because he lost control or Hawkmoth because he took advantage of his son’s emotion?

WAoLOM: Chat Blanc centric at first (like a villain song) but ends with Adrien reflecting on the events of Evolution-Destruction-Multiplication-PS night

ELCFT: I think it would be about his relaction ship with his father and how he wishes there was something he could do to go back to how they were when Emilie was alive but there’s no easy fix and his father keeps on getting worse and worse after any attempt.

loml: A song for Marinette with a bittersweet air - she’s the love of his life but he can’t tell her everything, and she can’t tell him everything either

ICDIWaBH: CatWalker centric - him going back to Ladybug in Kuroneko.

TSMWEL: I actually have three for this one - 1. About Gabriel and his need to domineer because he feels small and powerless. 2. About Adrien feeling small and insignificant. 3.About Plagg because he’s a smol boi (it would be like a lighthearted, cheeky song, like when you sing to your pet about how adorable they are)

The Cataclysm: Literally about how he cataclysmed Monarch, but also about how the event impacted his perception of self.

Adrien Agreste: Ending the album with a song that’s his own name :o.

Now for the variants:

The Black Cat: This one has Chat on the cover and the song is mostly about his bad luck. ‘I Love You It’s Ruining My Life” works both directed at Ladybug and his father.

Solitude: With Chat Blanc on the cover, this one’s about his mother. I think the “You Don’t Get To Tell Me About Sad” is pretty self-explanatory.

Doppelgänger: CatWalker is on this one, his song would be about how he may literally be the same person but he doesn’t fully feel like himself. He had to repress a lot of himself to be CatWalker hence I thought “Am I Allowed To Cry?” fit him really well (especially with Plagg not giving him the time to fully recover before he had to jump back in). Please note the crossed out name (unlike Chat Blanc) because he’s reinventing himself.

Tell-Tail Heart: This one has Ladybug on the cover - wait she’s not a Catboy?? The song is titled “Tell-Tail Heart” as a reference to Edgar Allan Poe’s “Tell Tale Heart” and would explore Chat’s perspective of Ladybug’s guilt for keeping secrets, how any excuse she makes is ultimately unimportant because she would do it either way. The fact that this is the only song title with a pun references how Chat tries to lighten the mood and avoid serious conversations, and the “Tail” is supposed to refer to Rena Rouge. The flowers she’s holding are meant to be foxgloves which symbolise secrets and insincerity (they’re also poisonous and damage the heart :)). I also really liked the “Old Habits Die Screaming” for her as it could mean both Chat Noir’s love for her being an old habit that he cannot get rid of, but also her habit of keeping things from him (especially with how she does it again at the end of season 5) being something she can’t stop. It is also him being able to see that, despite what she tells him, her “Heart” is tells him otherwise.

✨🐞Bullet Train Agere Headcanons: Flip LadyBug 🐞✨

Hi so I just wanna say that I've never written anything for Bullet Train so this is definitely going to be absolutely horrible but it's the best I could do. Hopefully other people in the Agere community who can write better than me will see this and feel inspired to make an actual good headcanon, but until then y'all are gonna have to deal with this horse shit. ✨🐞Regressor!Ladybug Headcanons 🐞✨

(this was the softest picture I could find of him soooo. I think he looks small in this but I understand if y'all can't see it the way I do)

Wanted to try out age regression after Barry, his therapist, suggested it to him after the events of bullet train (obviously Ladybug didn't tell him everything but Barry still knows that my mans somehow got more traumatized than the last time he saw him, believing whatever bullshit lie Ladybug came up with)

Was a little confused at first when Barry told him about it and after he went home to do some more research he decided to give it a try

He didn't regress immediately but after a few weeks of trying, he was able to and it's now one of his go too coping mechanisms

His age range is 3-6 years old, so he's not like a super little guy but he's still smol

While he usually does have great control, sometimes when something really triggers him, he does end up slipping

Maria had to find this out the hard way since of course Ladybug forgot to tell her this important information before accepting another grab and go mission

So obviously during the supposably "easy" mission, Ladybug's bad luck decided to show it's ugly face and lo and behold poor Ladybug ended up accidentally killing a bunch of people and no matter how hard Maria tried to comfort him, nothing seemed to calm poor Ladybug down, resulting in him slipping :(

Now Maria had no idea what was going on with him and why he sounded so scared and she swore it sounded like he was crying. Thinking that he just had a head injury, she very gently talked him through getting him out of the building he was in and to a spot where she could go and pick him up

When she did pick him up, she could see that he was indeed crying (poor boy☹️) and even had his thumb in his mouth while hugging his knees to his chest. She tried to soothe him while driving, and it's only after they were in the safe house she had set up for him, calmed him down some more, got him to bathe, had him change into some comfy clothes, even letting him cuddle against her as they watched TV, that she finally had time to think about what was happening with him and realized that he was age regressing

From that day on she dubbed herself his unofficial caregiver. She says she's only looking after him when he's little because she doesn't trust him to do anything stupid alone when he's small but we all know it's because she cares about him so much. Ladybug is just happy he has someone to take care of him because having to take care of yourself sucks when all you wanna do is play with his toys or watch cartoons all day long

Her nickname, as wells as Lemon's, for him when regressed is "Littlebug" and he loves it so much, it makes him feel so soft and fuzzy and, most of all small. Unfortunately this has the same affect on him when he's big and if he hears either of them say it he immediately starts to slip and has such a hard time staying big. Sometimes when Tangerine wants to be a dick or wants a play mate (hint hint to the next headcanon I'm working on hint hint) he'll teasingly call him "Littlebug" and with only a little cooing and some baby talk, Littlebug comes out to play!

He is just the sweetest regressor. Like he's super polite, always saying "please" and "thank you" and is almost always smiling too! He very rarely argues when he's told it's time for bed or to eat his vegetables, only times he does get upset are usually when he's just tried or had a really bad day

He's also very affectionate, wanting to cuddle with all of his friends and no matter how busy they are, they always make room so he can cuddle with them. He also loves giving kisses on people's cheeks. The only downside is that his lips, for some odd reason, are always like....super wet when he's regressed? If that makes sense. Like it's as if he's constantly licking his lips, especially when he goes in for a kiss so prepare to be covered in slobber!

His nicknames to call his current caregiver usually are just shortened versions of there names

Like Lemon is "Lems", Maria's just being "Mari". Even tho Tangerine's isn't really his caregiver, he calls him "Tang".

He has a crate full of calico critters toys

He loves how cute they look and they make him feel so warm and fuzzy inside. He wasn't really able to play with them when they came out because 1. He was an adult and wasn't regressing at the time 2. They were considered "girl toys" and 3. He was in the army (idk if that's actually true but for my headcanon he was before he started doing whatever the hell you would call what he's doing now). But now that none of those things matter to him anymore and he's allowed to freely indulge in playing with whatever he wants without having to worry about what others think of him, he buys as many calico critters and their accessories as he can find.

While he owns most of the figures, his favorite and main family he plays with is the Stripped Cat family. He just thinks they look super cute and even owns the little baby twins you can get separate from them. He also owns the family cruising car, country tree school, the school bus, family seven seater, as well as all of the housing add ons, and a good amount of furniture. He makes a lot of money with the few missions he goes on, so he's gonna buy whatever the hell he wants. He deserves to indulge in himself every now and then

He owns only a few other toys but their just random ones he found at stores that caught his eye. They range from stuffed animals to action figures to Legos.

His favorite show to watch while regressed are the care bears and the teenage mutant ninja turtles. It usually depends on how small he's feeling when he picks one of the shows, with younger being care bears and bigger being the ninja turtles

Likes drinking from sippy cups, ones with handles when he's smaller and ones without when bigger

While he still seems to have his bad luck with him while he's regressed, for some odd reason, it's not as severe as it usually is when he's feeling big. The worst that happens to him when he's regressed is spilling his drink on himself, tripping on thin air, or just getting minor injuries like paper cuts or scrapes. They're not minor to him tho, and he needs colorful band-aids as well as emergency kisses to make the better. And no matter who's looking after him, be it Maria or Lemon or hell even Tangerine, they all scummaged to his wobbly lip and teary eyes and give him kisses on his "very serious injuries". (Why is this so cute to think about 😭😭)

This kid puts literally everything in his god damn mouth, literally no one knows how he's still alive with the amount of diseases he probably now has

And I'm not talking like his hand or maybe an occasional toy (even tho he does put those in his mouth). No. I'm talking like sticks. Rocks. Jewelery. His hair. Hair brush handle (specifically wooden ones). Other people's hair. Literally everything he sees goes in his mouth. Lemon, on many occasions, has had to wrestle multiple TV remotes out from his fangs while Maria sits on the couch cuddling with an equally amused regressed Tangerine on her lap (another hint hint to one of the other headcanons coming up hint hint)

They do end up getting him some teething toys and some chewlery, since he doesn't like pacifiers that much, and he'll use them if he's reminded to but usually he just forgets they're even there and just opts to putting other things in his mouth and chewing on those instead

Has like a weird relationship with bugs. Like on one hand he thinks their super cool, being able to name a bunch of them and even owning some graphic kiddy looking T-shirts and onesies, but god forbid a touches him. He will stand their in shock for a few seconds and without warning, screech at the top of his lungs so loud, like he could put a banshee out of a job loud. BUT DON'T KILL THE BUG! As much as he hates being touched by bugs, he still doesn't want it to die

Littlebug: *screams bloody murder at the ant on his arm*

Lemon: *runs into the room with a Glock out ready to shoot anyone who so much as breathes in Ladybug's direction* What! What's wrong luv?!

Littlebug: *unintelligible frantic mumbles and whines as he franticly shakes his arm with the ant on it, gesturing to it with the other hand, with tears and snot running down his face*

Lemon: *sighs in relief knowing nothing's actually hurting him* Right. Alright, come ere, I'll kill it for ya.

Littlebug: *eyes now the size of saucers, screaming and crying harder* NO, DON' HURT 'IM

Lemon: *now completely exasperated* well then if you don' want me to kill it, what you want me to do about it luv?

Littlebug: SOMETHING! JUS DON' HURT DA ANT! THAT'S MEAN AND HE DON'T DESERVE IT! HE MIGHT HAB A FAMILY LEM!

Lemon: *sighs even louder, knowing he's literally not even getting payed for this*

Alright so this is turning out to be a super long ass headcanon and we're only half way done so maybe I'll do a part two for regressor!Ladybug, but to wrap it up, Ladybug is a sweetheart regressed or not (but more so regressed) and I just love him sooooo much but now we're gonna move on to the other part of the headcanons that I've been waiting for and are gonna be even worse than these so buCKLE UP!!!

✨🐞Caregiver! Ladybug headcanons🐞✨

(no stop because this look was so caregiver of him. Again maybe it's just me, but like I'm telling y'all, this screams caregiver energy)

One of the nicest caregivers you'll ever meet

Probably to like exist ever

He really does enjoy taking care of people and he loves kids so it's a win-win for him

He's also super supportive of any type of healthy coping mechanisms, so he totally would never judge anyone for something like this

He's a very sweet and playful caregiver. He loves playing any games that his little came up with, always playing along. He'll do silly voices and dumb little moves just to get them to laugh and it works every time

100% shares his toys with his little if they want to play with his toys. He'll play any character that he's told to play as without a problem. Well there is one problem actually. Sometimes when he gets really into playing with the toys, he'll slip accidentally. The good news is now his little has Littlebug as a playmate! Bad news is they don't have a caregiver to look after them and now have to go call Maria or Lemon to come and babysit. Luckily for two of them, Maria and Lemon love babysitting

Type of caregiver who likes to swing his arms when he's holding his littles hand. Sometimes he'll even skip with them when there walking somewhere and it's just so cute omg😭😭😭

Lemon is Tangerine's number one caregiver so I think you can guess who's Tangerine's second one is 😌

It's Maria.

Ladybug is Lemon's last pick and Ladybug tries not to be offended by it but sometimes it gets to him.

Like honestly, you shoot someone in the throat ONE time-

Little!Tangerine loves him though and gets super excited when he finds out Ladybug is babysitting him. Caregiver Ladybug is just so sweet and fun to be around so who wouldn't be excited to be with him

Only downside to having him look after you, is that he can't really cook for shit.

I mean I'm being a bit dramatic here. He can cook very basic foods like Mac n cheese, grilled cheese, pasta, burgers, and PB and J sandwiches, easy stuff like that. But like literally anything else he somehow manages to ruin. Like I'm talking it literally is no longer edible

Ladybug: * slowly shuffling out of the kitchen, covered in what looks like food* so um......Who wants take out?

Small Lemon and even smaller Tangerine: *look up from playing on the carpet* Me! Me! I wan it! Me!

Maria: *who was watching them on the couch* Take-out? Why the hell would we get take out? You were just in the kitchen cooking for like 30 minutes, what the hell happened?

Ladybug: We'll you see-

*Cut to them staring at a lump of....something on the counter that is somehow burnt and raw with one half covered in seasoning and the other half bare with a fork that looks like was cooked in it*

Ladybug: so um....yeah... it's... it's not as bad as it looks

Maria: I'm pretty sure feeding this to someone is considered a war crime..... I'll just go make an order for some Chinese food while you find a way to dispose of this without it burning a hole through Earth's crust

Ladybug: *mumbling to himself* now your just being mean...

ANYways

He loves reading/telling stories to his little. He'll read whatever story his little picks out for him, even if it's one they've read for the past two weeks, he'll read it with as much energy and enthusiasm as he did the first time. If his little wants him to make his own story, you best believe it's gonna be the best god damn story you've heard in your entire life. There full of adventure, comedy, drama, and sometimes romance depending on what his little wants to hear. He always adds in a reason for the story like "that's why you should always be nice to others" or "never bottle up your emotions" or something like that if that makes sense

He's really good at helping his little calm down if something upsets them or triggers them. He's great at breathing methods, the 54321 exercise, and just anything that can help someone from having a panic or anxiety attack. He ALWAYS makes sure to comfort his little afterwards too. Though depending on what his little is comfortable with depends on on how he'll comfort them. If they don't want to be touched he'll just sit next to them and talk in a soothing voice and try distracting them by telling them something that happened today or a mission he went on (a kid friendly version of course) or putting on their favorite show. If his little is okay with touch, he'll wrap them up in a blanket and cuddle them on his bed, running his hands through their hair and stroking their back as he rocks them gently

He's also very good with regressors of any age. Depending on how old his little is (and personality) depends on how he'll act with them

Like for example, Lemon regresses to a pretty high age, somewhere between 6-8, so Ladybug can be a little rougher when playing with him, like wrestling or playing with nerf guns, and not have to worry about him not understanding what he's doing and thinking he's being mean. He can also play different games with Lemon, like video games or board games or things like tag, since little!Lemon would have a better understanding of it than a younger regressor

Ladybug is also good with younger regressing people like Tangerine who regresses from 1-3. He's very gentle with Tang, talking to him in a silly voice or a soothing manner depending on Tangerine's mood. He'll play with blocks with him or sit down at a minni table and eat the "delicious food" Tang makes in his little toy kitchen. He also plays baby games like peek-a-boo or paddy cake or tickle monster (actually he plays that with any age, just younger regressors a little teensy weensy bit more) with no shame. Ladybug is having way to much fun being able to play around with Tang for a even a whisper of embarrassment to come to him

He's really into physical contact with his little if they'll allow him. Whether it's holding there hand, giving them a hug, cuddling, or picking them up, he's loves every moment of it. Positive physical contact with a loved one or friend is great for someone's mental health and Ladybug is a big supporter of this fact.

While he does a have a bunch of rules like not staying up past a certain time (depending on current age of regressor), eating all of your veggies, or not allowing more than one cookie/ treat before dinner, he's not very strict with them and if they beg hard enough, he'll usually break and let them have what they want

There are somethings, however, that are big no nos in his book and no matter how good their puppy eyes are, they won't get away with. Examples are like throwing things or hitting either him or especially someone else. Just because you're upset, doesn't mean you can hurt other people and makes sure to tell them that. Bottling up emotions until they burst out are on the list too. He's right there and he makes it very apparent that they should always tell him if something is wrong even if it's embarrassing because it could effect their metal health and make it worse for themselves in the long run. He also hates lying. Lying is a form of mistrust and when his little lies to him, he sees it as him not being a good enough caregiver that they felt the need to lie to him. He also now thinks that he can't trust his little with certain things like staying up a little later or any other privileges because he doesn't trust them that they're okay and aren't actually that tired or stuff like that

But usually things like this very rarely happen so he's usually very chill

All in all, Ladybug is a great caregiver, being so sweet and understanding, as well as a super cute regressor and it think he's just the cutest thing ever thank you very much

(I just now realized how many more headcanons I have for Regressor!Ladybug than I do for Caregiver!Ladybug so everyone just ignore that and pretend there's a even amount. Okay? Okay.)

IT'S FINISHED! FINALLY! I'm so sorry this took so long for those of you who were waiting. I had a lot going on, that being me being incredibly sick and even throwing up unfortunately as well as being in excruciating pain, but luckily I'm doing sooooooo much better than before. I would like to say that it's been like more than 4 months since I've written something so if you're wondering why this was absolutely garbage than this is why. Today at work I made a new friend :) hims was a dragonfly and I named him Gerard :) and then I found a grasshopper that chicken noodle-souped both hims legs and so he really didn’t move much. And 4 ladybugs, I named the first one fuckface cause he kept trying to escape from the control panel and then there was fuckface’s girlfriend who went too far over the edge and fell to her death but she actually was fine and I put her back on the control panel. Then facefaces boyfriend cause he’s very loving and another ladybug who I never named. Then I found a chonkie caterpillar whom I named “chonkie boi” and a dead moth and then a green caterpillar with no name and finally a smol lil green worm whom is without a name. I do believe fuckface’s girlfriend is the re-encarnation of ladybug xiaojun since ladybug xiaojun fell to hims death the other day :( but Gerard my love I adored him for the entire 2 hours I was out with him he’s such a silly dragonfly 🥺 and then primo picked my sweet child up by his wings and tried to eat him! Ugh I was mad I scooped up my lil Gerard and scolded primey, bad bad primey 😡 but my lil Gerard was safe back on hims big stick. I gave my big friends leaves and sticks and blueberries and all fun things to relax on. I tried to get the grasshopper and chonkie boi to nibble on squished blueberries but I guess they weren’t hungry. Oh! And on top of his legs getting chicken noodle-souped his antenna was bent down into his ojo (but he fixed it later) and fucking fuckface’s girlfriend grabbed onto grasshopper’s legs and started crawling up his leg and the grasshopper kicked and kicked and probably was in shock. She crawled all the way up his body and then got off of him 🙄 also both fuckface and his gf kept falling on their backs and I had to help flip them they are both brain dead but I love them. Unfortunately all my bug friends prolly got thrown in the garbage or fell to their deaths or got squished :( but I like to think they’re all still hanging out :)

Cat’s Not-All-Encompassing Character Ranking

Okay, so I have to admit that I omitted a lot of characters I don't have strong opinions on. Most of them were one-off akumas, so don't get your panties in a twist, your faves are probably still on here (and ranked lower than you think).

As a preface again, these are just my personal opinions. They can't hurt you. You can still like characters more or less than me. And I don't care how you feel about them. This list is for me. And the person that asked for it. So shut up. Go make your own rank list if you’re so butthurt. 

We're going in reverse order this time, starting from the bottom:

84. Gabriel Agreste- I mean, is anyone surprised? I am not private about how I think Gabriel should go to jail. Or fall off a cliff. Or be erased from existence. Rip to those that like him, but I’m different.

83. Thomas Astruc- Honestly, he’s down here on principle. Self-inserts are generally a no-no, and I just laugh every time I see him on screen because he really put himself in this show and said boohoo no one appreciates me XD

82. Bob Roth- I feel like this one should also be obvious. He’s just a dick. Terrible human. I give him 0 stars.

81. Tomoe Tsurugi- We all collectively hate her, right? It’s not just me?

80. Su Han- This mans has small peepee energy. And he bad mouthed Fu, so get FUCKED, my dude.

79. Rolland Dupain- Listen, I get it, he liked Marinette in the end, but I could do without the racism.

78. Nathalie Sancoeur- My opinion of Nathalie took a nosedive after the s2 finale. I just do not care that she is in love with her boss. Don’t care that she’s dying. Just do not have it in me.

77. XY- Justin Bieber ass wannabe.

76. Nora Cesiare- I didn’t care for Nora. I know Thomas loves her, but the overbearing sibling trope is tired.

75. Anarka Couffaine- I underestimated how much I don’t really like her. Like, it’s not full-on hate, but I just do not care for her.

74. Otis Cesaire- Got akumatized because a kid said he could outrun a panther. I’m still not over it, Otis.

73. Andre Bourgeois- No love for the crooked mayor. I hope your wife divorces you.

30. Sabrina Raincomprix- Sabrina deserves better. I hope we see good things happen for her.

29. Lila Rossi- Surprised? I actually like Lila. The first fic I ever wrote for this fandom was a Lila redemption. I think she is a good antagonist and foil to Marinette. I absolutely want to see her get dunked on in canon, but that doesn’t mean I hate her.

7. Kagami Tsurugi- I will fight anyone who shits on Kagami. She has done nothing wrong, you guys are just haters. All she did was exist, and yall said, wow what a toxic bitch?? Disgraceful.

6. Jagged Stone- We are going to ignore the deadbeat dad trope that canon thrust upon him. He is a Marinette stan, and we love that.

5. Kim Le Chien- I really love Kim, you guys. Does that surprise you? Listen, my favorite male character types are sweet beans and himbos. Kim is both of these.

4. Master Fu- If you didn’t pick up on how much I love Fu from the episodes ranking, then idk what to tell you. I want him to be my grandpa. I would trust this mans with my life. He did his best. You paint those pictures, you funky little man. I love you.

3. Plagg- My galaxy trash man. Love him. 10/10 chefs kisses all around.

2. Adrien Agreste- The biggest Marinette stan there is. I just want him to kiss her on the face. And marry her. Idk, I just think that would be neat if he could do that. I just want good things for them.

“Hey Arnold!” and “Miraculous!” parallels

Ever have an idea for a post that you take forever to get around to because 2020 is 

actively 

trying

to kill you?!

 Welp, that’s me. I mean, uh, this is that post.

Long post is long and I don’t like cuts cuz I’ve lost a few posts in the past using them. Please filter the tag “long post” I use it for walls of text like these.

So there’s this show from my childhood called Hey Arnold! 

Having been on air before I had cable (I and my unsupervised brothers and sisters spent our childhood watching Jerry Springer and Maury because there was literally nothing else on our cheap little TV. How hilarious is that?) I didn’t really have much of an experience with Hey Arnold! aside from brief little glances at it when i visited a friends home or the rare occasion where they showed cartoons at school. By the time I got satellite, the show was no longer on the air save for some late night reruns and the Christmas special which aired in December along with other Nickelodeon Christmas episodes (THE best Christmas episode EVER btw).

Really I couldn’t remember much about it until hearing about the Jungle Movie finally getting a release date (a total flop but at least its no cliff hanger) and decided to re-watch the entire series in preparation for said movie.

By which point I had discovered another show—Miraculous. 

At first glance the two shows have absolutely nothing in common. Miraculous being a French-born mahou shoujo-esque CGI superhero TV series about a couple of middle schoolers who regularly battle a walking peppermint-frappucino-looking psychopath. Hey Arnold! being a more realistic children’s sitcom about a young football-headed boy who deals out humanitarian aid in the form of advice and simple good deeds to his neighbors, classmates and friends. 

In terms of setting, logic, and animation the two series are as different as night and day.

So imagine my pleasant surprise to discover a whole post’s worth of parallels shared between the two shows???

And here they are in no particular order:

1)Arnold’s Parents/Adrien’s mom

Prior to the start of Miraculous, Emilie Agreste disappeared under mysterious circumstances leaving her family behind. Later on it was revealed that she was in fact sleeping (dead?) in a glass coffin beneath the Agreste mansion--unbeknownst to Adrien, or anyone else in Paris save for Gabriel and Nathalie.

In a similar fashion, Arnold’s parents, Miles and Stella, also disappeared prior to the start of Hey Arnold! and like Emilie were always referred to as “missing” rather than “dead.” 

The Jungle Movie later revealed Miles and Stella weren’t dead, but like Emilie appears to be doing in her coffin, they were sleeping. Having caught a bout of sleeping sickness (apparently they do not need to be hooked up to IVs or other medical devices while in a comatose state cuz fuck logic) they simply needed their orphaned son to come and cure them with the help of the magical golden heart Helga provided him with.

Perhaps Mari holds the key to waking Emilie? That would be nice to see. 

Not the miraculous of course--but some other key.

Although personally I’m hoping for a hardcore, devastating ending like Emilie dying, Gabriel going to prison where he belongs, and Adrien leaving the country for a bit until the second Hawk Moth shows up because I just like devastating cliffhangers and angst and being in utter turmoil over fictional people. But that’s just me.

2) Their best friends are dating

Smol parallel here: Arnold’s best friend Gerald and Helga’s Best friend Phoebe wind up together in The Jungle Movie after being imprisoned together by Lasombra. Similar to how Nino and Alya ended up together after being imprisoned by Ladybug (for their protection, of course).

3) The Bag of Money Episode/ The Ladybug episode

OOh boy both of these episodes make me rage. 

Some context about the Bag of Money episode: Arnold and his friends Gerald and Sid find a random bag of money containing almost $4000. Sid is ecstatic and wants to split the money evenly between the three boys, but Arnold worries it could just be lost and convinces them to let him, Arnold, take the money to the police station. On the way he accidentally switches the bag with another one that is identical and contains a bunch of useless junk, and when he tries to explain what happened to his friends they don’t believe him because their bag of money was accidentally taken by an “old lady with pink hair and a peg leg.”

 Arnold’s a good boy and he’s telling the truth--but the truth sounds crazy, even to my ears. Sid accuses Arnold of stealing the money and spreads lies to their classmates, whom Arnold has spent the ENTIRE SERIES helping in some form or fashion. Despite everything he’s done for them though, the vast majority of the class come to believe Arnold is a thief. Even Gerald, Arnold’s closest friend, nearly believes Sid over Arnold but eventually comes to Arnold’s defense. The other kids (save for Helga who doesn’t really make an appearance this episode) gang up on Arnold, but thankfully the old lady with pink hair and a peg leg shows up with an officer and together they explain the bag of money is now at the lost and found where it will remain and if gone unclaimed will be returned to Arnold, Gerald and Sid. 

Pretty much everything is resolved and things return to normal between the kids. 

But I hate this episode. I hate this episode so, so much. Arnold has spent the entire series helping these people out in some form or fashion. Literally thats the entire show. And after everything he’s done for them they’re so. Quick. To. Turn. On. Him. 

Sound familiar???

4) Hidden Personality                   vs.          Surface Personality

 I do not refer to the cruddy “true selves” thing half the Miraculous fandom believes in. Depending on one’s individual circumstances, environment and how comfortable they are, said person’s behavior can fluctuate or even do a complete 180. This can be kinda frustrating when dealing on one’s own--”Who am I anyway? Is that me or is this me???”

It’s all you, fam.

Arnold and Helga are themselves too, no matter what metaphorical/actual mask they put on. There’s the side that everyone sees and then there’s the side almost no one sees. The hidden personality isn’t hidden due to a lack of trust, necessarily, but rather it is the result of retreating to their respective “shells”--ones which both Arnold and Helga were kinda punched, kicked, and shoved into. 

Helga’s surface personality: Class bully, puts up a tough front, constantly torments Arnold because she can’t stand him and his niceness

Helga’s hidden personality: Poetic, abused and isolated, is in love with Arnold to the point of being obsessed with him and bullies him via surface personality in order to hide that fact

Of course Adrien is no bully--his reasons for not being the “cunning, funny, ultra-charming Chat Noir” 24/7 DOES have a lot to do with his toxic household, his dad, and the overwhelming expectations which are constantly smothering him as Adrien. 

Adrien is a bug under a magnifying glass (or so he feels)

Chat Noir is a chance for a freedom.

 Adrien’s surface personality was molded by his dad.

 Helga’s is the result of her entire family. Her father is brash and loud, her mother is a confirmed alcoholic, her sister is a gifted prodigy, well-rounded and spends most of the series at university or elsewhere. Although her sister, Olga, has been shown to genuinely care for Helga, Olga is kinda the reason their parents neglect Helga. With their first daughter being the genius and prodigy she is, Helga’s parents poured all of their pride and affection and parental devotion onto her. Meanwhile Helga had to walk to pre-school alone. At four years old. In the rain. Not for the last time. 

Which leads me to the next parallel.

5) Umbrella in the Rain

If you’ve never seen Hey Arnold! do yourselves a favor and watch this short little clip over how Helga and Arnold first met. If you have seen it, watch it anyway because it is the most adorable clip in the entire show.

Dr. Bliss: “So nobody’s ever noticed you?”

Helga: “...There was someone.”

The soft way Helga confesses that--you can actually hear how grateful she is to have such a tender memory from such a painful time. 

 In a similar manner, Adrien offered his umbrella to Marinette. Of course Adrien did it because Mari had to walk home in the rain and Arnold did it as a simple gesture of kindness (seeing as they were already at the school)--one of the many kind acts he displays throughout the series. 

 But just like Adrien needed unconditional love coming from somewhere, so did Helga. They were both denied this one common necessity which everyone else around them had. It’s not a lot to ask for, and they should’ve already had it coming from their families--but they didn’t.

 And then, one rainy day, there it was--the unconditional love they needed.

6) Clinginess

What happens when you take someone, specifically a love-starved abused child from an unstable home environment--deprived of the one thing most crucial to their mental well-being--and miraculously provide them with that very necessity? 

Clinginess. 

I can’t really think of the correct word to describe this. “Clinginess” is pretty close to what I’m trying to describe, if not on point, so let’s go with that. 

 What I mean is Helga and Adrien both need Arnold and Ladybug respectively. That’s not a bad thing--it’s okay to need somebody else. What’s bad is hinging your entire being on this one connection. For if either kiddo were to be left behind they wouldn’t handle it very well.

 It can’t really be helped with either Helga or Adrien. They didn’t really have the option to learn certain things and went deprived of unconditional love for such a long time. They’re kids--nine and fourteen/fifteen respectively. They’re not perfect and they’re traumatized for life. Being denied love from your family--the very people designed to love you--would do that to a person. Naturally they would cling to the first people to show up and provide them with the love they needed. 

 The Hey Arnold! wiki says this about Helga and Arnold’s relationship

Due to her unstable family upbringing where both her mother and father constantly neglect [Helga] and shower all of their attention onto Olga, leaving her deprived of the love and attention she needed growing up. On her way to preschool, Arnold helped her by keeping the rain off her with an umbrella and even complimented her on her hairbow. He even later gave her crackers during their snack time. Arnold's kindness and being the first person to notice her quickly caused Helga to transfer all of her love and attention to Arnold.

Of course Adrien’s tunnel vision isn’t quite as bad as Helga’s.

 He treats his friends better.

 He does love his father--

Even though his father is THE. 

WORST.

 PARENT.

 EVER!!!

--because he’s Adrien and he’s just too precious a cinnamon roll and that’s still his dad even if the man does belong behind bars.

7) Unhealthy Obsession

Ugh. I am not going to delve too far into this. You’re just going to have to take my word for it. Helga’s creepy stalker behavior is a thousand times worse than Marinette’s. That pic up there of Helga hiding out in Arnold’s room watching him is pretty decent evidence to back up my argument, but it’s hardly the only example or even the worst incident.

 Honestly I’m amazed at what Nicktoons were able to get away with in the late nineties/early 2000s. 

But yes, Helga’s obsession with Arnold is rather unhealthy in the most extreme moments leading her to display behavior which is more often than not disturbing and concerning. 

The Hey Arnold! wiki has this to say about Helga’s obsession with Arnold

Helga is possessive of her love for Arnold and thinks non-stop about him to the point of obsession. This is evidenced throughout the series by the many shrines and poems she makes of Arnold and of her frequent dramatic soliloquies about her love for Arnold.

Again--Mari isn’t as bad as all that. She’s a sweet girl with many healthy relationships in her life. She has ambition, creativity, and drive. But yeah she can be rather possessive of Adrien too, and that needs to stop. Like right now. Adrien doesn’t need another girl being possessive of him and thinking he’s perfect--he needs someone who acknowledges him as a flawed person and loves him despite that. 

As for Helga and Arnold--show creator Craig Bartlett confirmed they are “made for each other” and wind up married with three kids, so I’m guessing Helga grew out of some of these bad habits? Or at least I hope so...

8) Helper/Humanitarian tendencies

As mentioned before, the plot of Hey Arnold! is more or less about Arnold helping people. As stated by Gerald in The Jungle Movie, “He’s a humanitarian! Like his parents!” Of course not every episode is about Arnold helping people. There are episodes devoted to supporting characters and they’re just as enjoyable and satisfying. 

 But as he is the titular character he spends a lot of time in the spotlight. 

Remember that “best christmas special EVER” episode I mentioned before?

 The reason it’s the best special, in my less than humble opinion, is due to a few things.

 The special is not about Santa Claws. In fact, I don’t think he’s even mentioned, let alone shown and treated like an actual living character.

The focus on the entire episode is again on Arnold helping someone, but he doesn’t succeed. Not really.

The one who succeeded in helping someone was Helga, who accomplished the goal Arnold had set out to do. 

The episode deals with some rather dark subject matter and is actually quite heartwarming as the “perfect present” Arnold was trying to provide someone with wasn’t something you can buy in the store

It’s also one of the episodes where Helga’s love for Arnold leaves her to do good and as her love for him is a secret, she expects nothing in return. She’s just happy to help him.

 Kinda similar to Mari who is, as Adrien puts it in Mayura, “Our every day Ladybug.” Her kindness and devotion to helping others is what drives her as Ladybug and Marinette. It’s what brought Ivan and Mylene together. Is the reason Nathaniel and Mark now have a comic book together. And at the end of the day, that’s the reason for her strange behavior around Adrien--she wants to help him. Even if it’s just as a “good friend.” 

9) There are two main characters

Although Hey Arnold! is technically a show about Arnold, one could argue it is just as much Helga’s story. 

Similarly, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir is named thusly in order to convey the fact that Adrien is just as much a main character as Marinette is. 

Although I must say Hey Arnold! did a much better job of giving it’s co-character their dues. GIVE. ME. MORE. CHAT NOIR. FOCUSED. EPISODES. DAMMIT.

But, yes, in terms of screen time, Helga gets about as much as Arnold does. Her story and struggles were given just as much importance as Arnold’s and many people have even come to believe that the show is really about Helga. I’d say its about both of them.

10) Constantly bumping into each other

Granted this happens between Arnold and Helga more often than it does to the love square dorks. 

 But yes the two people meant to be together keep knocking into each other in their respective universes. 

 I forget who, but I remember reading that someone a while back theorized that this was the universe’s way of trying to push Arnold and Helga together. Kinda like the “Now kiss!” meme

Perhaps it’s the same for Adrien and Marinette?

from the posts on your blog I know you're more of a lukanette fan, so i wanted to ask what your take was on the new york special as a whole. And also on the smol lukanette scene in there. Was it satisfactory? I want to know what you think.

Ooo that is really an interesting question! I’m so glad you asked!

So yes, that’s true I’m a Lukanette fan, and a relatively newer one to be honest! I mean, I always have been in support of the ship since Silencer aired (before that, I was a hardcore LS shipper, and actually hated Luka!), and season 3 just gave me more and more reasons to ship it, especially with the finale. Secondly, I know I say this a lot, but Marinette’s dilemma is something I feel on a personal level. Unrequited feelings suck for real, especially when the person you love is oblivious as hell (mine asked me opinions on a girl he wished to pursue, a girl who hated my guts, so double fun, haha!)

I ship Lukanette ‘cause in my honest opinion, at the moment it is one of those ships that actually give Marinette a room to breathe. Like, with the responsibilities of not only a class of approximately 15 students (I don’t remember the exact number in Ms. Bustier’s class) but also an entire freaking city and a bunch of magical beings on her shoulders, Marinette is just… squashed. Like, I absolutely feel like fainting when I barely manage to juggle with (prior) school stuff, domestic chores and projects and hobbies and teenage life, and this girl does that all PLUS saving a city at odd hours. I just… can’t even imagine what burden she is facing.

Luka is someone who actually loves her right now, who understands her feelings and most importantly, is NOT pushing her to pursue her feelings. He wants her to be calm, to be relaxed, to go with the flow. He doesn’t know about her double life, but he sees the frenzy she’s in, and does his absolute best to support her in every way possible. This is something that Chat does for Ladybug too, but then again, Chat is a bit persuasive (according to s3) about his romantic feelings, which pulls him down by a notch and Luka simply wins.

That’s why I ship. Cause I see myself in Marinette. And I basically feel like being with Luka is going to be a lot calming on her. Having someone who understands you, platonically or romantically, can do wonders to your life. (My mom is one such person, and thanks to her I’m actually able to deal with all the teenage drama in her life, she’s my real pillar <3) I’ve never been in an actual relationship, but the values I place an ideal relationship on is what I see in Lukanette: trust, harmony, mutual understanding. It’s like Luka is the calm Marinette’s frenzy really needs right now.

Coming to the main question, season 3 and NYC special were an absolute delight for me! Given I still have to rewatch the special once more thanks to my bad internet, I still got the gist and I must say, the work done on the storyline is commendable. I basically seek after ML not for the ships, but for the feelings they involve. Like for me, season 1 and season 2 paled a bit even if they had more Adrinette and LS moments -- the feelings sometimes didn’t hit me. Season 3 showed me what I wanted to see -- Marinette feeling the burden of being a superhero, someone actually being there to listen to her, Marinette’s feeling of betrayal when her friends sought after Lila and then Chat Blanc… Do I even need to say anything about it? Chat Blanc just kills me everytime I watch it.

The NYC special has its small Lukanette moment, and sure, a little part of me was disappointed at first that Marinette still was pining after Adrien. But then I realised, my girl is doing her work. She’s trying to move on with her feelings and she’s doing her best at it. As Adrien said, “The heart wants what it wants.” And I totally agree. I love the special from Adrien’s story arc-- it made me totally emotional. I loved it from Marinette’s arc -- the way she’s trying to move on yet being pulled back by her feelings, the way she feels her trust being betrayed by Chat but then realises his importance and as an ML fan, I absolutely support it.

And I love the Lukanette scene too, no matter how small. Luka’s care for Marinette, how he puts his feelings aside and wants her to “get clarity in her feelings”, it’s just… so heart warming and heart wrenching at the same time. My boi’s doing his best and I love it.

Honestly, I won’t be much dejected if Lukanette is not endgame. I mean… all Marinette needs is someone to care for her and to listen to her. She needs someone not to guide her how to do things, but to lead her about the same, to be the constant pillar of support whether she succeeds or fails (Heart Hunter ending) and right now, Luka presents as the best option. Even if they give each other a chance and part on amicable terms, I would be simply satisfied. little story as to how he became my fave kny character; so there was this one night, long story short my feelings got kinda hurt by my crush and well, I cried for a pretty long time, probably half an hour at least? So, the next morning I wake up and still feel really sad, I’m basically just in my bed for hours. After a while I kinda forced myself to do something, which was watching kny. and that happened to be the first episode where we really saw zenitsu (you know the scene where he’s on his knees) and i actually finally smiled. So yeah, he’s kinda become a comfort character for me I guess?

3. Kim Yoosung - Mystic Messenger

ahhh his route was the first one that I played in mm, I still love him with all my heart to this day, he’s too precious for his own good

So this was a VERY strong episode and there wasn’t much to fault, which is great for an episode that literally relies on its succeeding episode as this one does for a two-part finale. I just wish that the season had a more definite order, as that only would’ve helped this finale and the emotional impacts from character growth (I honestly can’t pinpoint that much growth from Adrien or Marinette, which really sucks).

Also, as much as I want Gabriel’s ass to be kicked, the relationship between him and Nathalie is just so amazing purely because a lot of it is unspoken. Sure, you’ve got that speech about giving him strength and being loyal, but it’s the hug she gives him in ‘Queen Wasp’ where he doesn’t pull away or even react, implying it’s something she’s done before and not been pushed away for. It’s the way he lets her into his plans and trusts her to be there for him, to not go running and backstab him when SO much of his plan, even down to his very identity, relies on secrecy. It’s the tender way he akumatises her, as opposed to gloating about evilising everybody else, and the way he even asks her in the garden if she’s okay with it. That actually throws me off and makes me completely unsure of whether he’d forcefully akumatise her if she said no or just leave her be. And that uncertainty just adds to the air of evil around him.

Honestly, I’d be all for Gabriel eventually realising what Nathalie means to him and how much she’s done for him and choosing her over Emilie but let’s be real that ain’t ever happening.

Also, the way Nathalie responds is very telling and honestly opens the door for a deeper analysis into Hawkmoth’s powers. Notice how when he akumatises literally anyone else, they get that dark, purplish shadow around their eyes, along with the purple butterfly outline. But with Nathalie? There’s no shadow. She doesn’t look she’s gone overboard with the eye makeup and turned into the Winter Soldier like everyone else does.

So that makes me wonder if a willing akumatisation born from more positive emotions (like the love Nathalie feels for Gabriel) is far more powerful than what Hawkmoth’s been doing so far (capitalising on negative emotions and forcing it) and even if, despite all his angry speeches, the purpose of Hawkmoth’s akumas wasn’t actually to get the Miraculouses. Of course, that would’ve been a nice addition, but I suspect that the true reason for the akumas was to amass an army of people who’d already been akumatised and therefore could be easily akumatised again. Which means that he probably didn’t fully expect any of them to succeed, and this also would’ve thrown LB and Chat off. I’m fairly certain that he’s been building to this day, when he could use Nathalie as a willing akuma fuelled by more positive emotions to boost his in turn, and if that’s the case then I regret ever doubting Hawkmoth’s capabilities because man, he’s got patience.

Can he also sense positive emotions??? Cause if he can and he’s just stringing Nathalie along by her feelings for him then I’m gonna scream even though I definitely feel that he likes her as far more than just an assistant

Prepare thy butthole for Mayura, it’s gonna be a wild ride. It HAS to be Nathalie who gets the Peacock cause like who else would Gabriel trust to use the Miraculous he’s got.

Let’s talk about Chameleon, it’s been on my mind a while.

Oh, Adrien you sweet pure little baby kitten you’re such a good kid, but oh my word Honeybun you’re so wrong. 

Lila is a bad person. She’s a liar. She’s manipulative. She has the power to get everyone wrapped around her finger as soon as she enters a room, and the girl doesn’t even need an akuma to do that. Yeah, she’s still just a kid, but this isn’t something you just grow out of. Not with age anyway. 

You’re right Sweetpea. Lila isn’t going to become any better of a person if she’s humiliated. She’s not the type. She’s going to hold a grudge and a strong one at that. Because of this, she is so easy. She’s a prime target for Hawkmoth. She is dangerous. 

But here’s the thing, Sunshine, she is literally manipulating your friends. She’s lying to them outright and they’re falling for it. I don’t know how she does it, I don’t know how she turns Alya against Marinette. I don’t know how she manages to fool the smartest kid in the class that a napkin could take out his eye with no scientific facts behind it or citation, only the mere claim that she’s seen it happen. But there is obviously something underlying there. 

In the origins episode it is said that  "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good people do nothing!" but honestly I find that to be complete bogus. If doing nothing was the answer then Ladybug and Chat Noir would have never been a part of Paris. Hawkmoth would just send out akuma after akuma trying to lure Master Fu out, hurting innocent people and eventually become frustrated and his hunt would just continue. If good people just do nothing in response to evil, evil will, in most cases, prevail. 

Now I do argue that, if they’re really your friends, they should believe you over a stranger. If someone is your friend they’re supposed to trust you more than someone they hardly know. I’m not excusing them for what they do around the girl, and sometimes it angers me enough to think “maybe they deserve to be lied to and manipulated if they really place so little value in their friendships”, but Lila is obviously a pro at this. She’s been doing it for years and knows what she’s doing. So here it comes, what this whole thing is about...

You’re really just going to sit there and watch your friends be manipulated? 

Exposing Lila will infuriate and humiliate her. But your friends will know the truth and won’t be being made fools of any more. Their eyes will be open to the manipulation and they can keep an eye out for it in the future, be it from Lila or someone else entirely.

For Marinette this is the first time they really turned around against her, because Lila is a pro as stated before. In other situations they have been right by her side doing whatever she asked of them simply because she is that good of a friend. It should infuriate her to see them so easily manipulated, she should want to expose her to save her friends from her.

And Adrien, dearest, it’s so nice of you to not mind being friends with her but h o n e y. Love, smol sweet little boi, for as long as she is lying to you, for as long as she is trying to manipulate you into doing what’s best for her and never lifting a finger for your benefit, she isn’t your friend. That’s not what a friend does. You should never befriend someone like that because you can not ‘fix’ them. All they are going to do is use you for what they want, emotionally manipulate you into staying by their side with guilt trips and more, and until you leave them you’re going to be subjected to their lies over and over again. Friends are people you can trust. You can’t trust that girl. She’s just going to use you. Your friendship isn’t the blessing she needs to turn a new leaf and become a better person. She needs to be stood up to. Shown that if she continues to lie like that she is going to end up alone. What she chooses to do with that is up to her but in the end. Someone like that will never be a friend, and innocent yet oblivious people need to be shown that, otherwise they will just be used by her as well. 

So Adrien, Son, as wonderful as you are, this is one case where I simply can not agree with you. As a matter of fact, in this instance, you baffle me. 

EDIT: Since writing this, I’ve read some things that hold a compelling argument. While I keep a firm stance on my case, Adrien’s approach does make more sense. 

I’ve been aware that him stopping Marinette from trying to out Lila during her left ear right ear break in her lie was the appropriate thing to do. It wasn’t the right time. She would have just been shot down faster than if she were a disk in a skeet shoot, and been hurt even more. Her approach was a downward spiral, because she was nitpicking at everything Lila said (albeit with a good reason) and by attacking her every which way, she would just make the “jealous yandere” label on her even worse. 

And from his POV, he hasn’t seen everything we have, and I’m not just talking about the scene in the bathroom. He has no clue that she is willingly akumatizing herself, greeting the butterflies with a smile. He’s concerned about Marinette causing more harm for herself by fighting an endless battle with a pathological liar. 

While I see this point, and understand it thoroughly, I still stand for showing everyone that they’re being fooled by her. They’re wildly out of character by just dancing around Lila like love-struck puppy dogs begging for a treat and shoving Marinette aside like last weeks bone. They have done so much for her in the past, as she has for them. I see it much more as a situation where she needs to stand her ground, but bide her time- Marinette that is. There will come a time when Lila slips up. She may not be physically hurting anyone, but she is setting up a path that will hurt them all emotionally. It could damage the trust they put into others. We have seen that Lila is willing to manipulate relationships before- whether it be to gain one for herself or to split them up (both platonic and romantic). With the trust her classmates put into her she could end up hurting Marinette whether she does anything else or not by driving her friends (except Adrien, of course) away from her. 

With this post I am by no means saying that Adrien was wrong in stopping her at that moment in the end of Chameleon. I’m saying that it isn’t enough that him and Marinette know, that if you have the opportunity to show your friends what’s going on you need to show them. I’m saying that while outing her lies has only caused destruction in the past, if you show your friends her true face they won’t believe the lies again. No more ‘attempts’ would be necessary. The longer they partake in this idolizing ‘friendship’, the more it’s going to hurt to find out that she was lying about all of it. I’m not saying try to ruin Lila’s life. Give her a chance to change. Give her a chance to turn a new leaf. But if you can help it do not let your friends be manipulated. It may not be hurting anyone now but you never know when its going to pick away at them psychologically.

I had a lot of stuff to say but since it’s not that interesting I’m gonna leave it all under the cut tho but yeah, ENJOY

So...! Oh boy where do I start with this

When I originally started creating Cloudy as a whole, all I had was the idea of a magical girl whose mascot-fairy-thing was a dog that looked like a cloud. I had a vague idea on what I wanted Barkinson to be like, but nothing on what I was going to do with Cloudy herself.

So while my main problem with Barkinson was figuring out how to draw them (frankly speaking I still have no idea how to draw dogs), Cloudy I had no clue what to do with. I had yet to decide what her personality, interests, backstory etc really were. That is why her earlier concept arts look so weird— I just had no idea what kind of a character I was trying to create (mainly because this whole comic started out as a joke that got out of hand lol).

In hindsight I could say I took kind of a deconstructionist-attitude when trying to figure out what Cloudy should look like. On one hand I wanted her to kind of look like a generic magical girl, being pretty and having this princess-y look to her— I wanted to be sure that anyone who looks at her will immidiately be like “oh, that’s a magical girl”.    But at the same time, I didn’t want her to look like a cheap Sailor Moon, Precure or Madoka knock-off. I never really wanted to give her a huge bow with a brooch on it, I didn’t really want to give her bows in general, and I did want to avoid the more generic motifs like hearts, stars and moons as much as I could. I didn’t want to give her the typical magic staff, stick or any generic weapon either, so somehow I ended up going with an umberella instead...

Also her theme color is a baby blue; obviously the more common theme color for the protagonist in magical girl shows is pink or red, but in this instance I wasn’t trying to go against magical girl tropes or anything. I picked light blue because Cloudy’s mascot was a cloud, clouds are white, clouds are associated with the sky and the sky is blue. That’s literally how Cloudy’s colorscheme was created.

But yeah, as much as I wanted to avoid some kind of tropey magical girl elements, I did still end up giving into some of them (mainly the bow with brooch thing but in my defence it’s a smol bow, not a huge one that covers her whole chest area).

Aside from that I don’t really have much to say about the early iterations of Cloudy Wondrous... I do remember early-on being very hellbent on Cloudy’s costume having a hood of somekind but since I couldn’t figure out how to make it look right (because I was also hellbent on giving her a crown) I abandoned that idea. I also ended up wanting to be sure that Cloudy’s costume wasn’t like... Not sure what to call it, fanservice-bait-y? Whatever, point is, this is why Cloudy ended up with that dark blue fullbody suit (which I’ve made darker and greyer later on).

But yeah, after some attempts at designing Cloudy I ended up liking one enough to try and refine it a little bit more; this is where we get to the original design. It’s almost identical to the finalized one, the only differences being the colorscheme, the boots and the gloves— those things got changed because I wasn’t quite satisfied or happy with them.

When I first started sketching out pages for the first chapter (originally just a one-shot), I actually used the original design. It was only after I was like half-way through sketching the thing that I decided I had to re-adjust Cloudy’s design. The long boots and gloves just didn’t feel right to me...

Ironically, her finalized shoes and gloves didn’t feel right back when I got the finalized design done, and they still don’t either. But I ended up just rolling with it because I don’t think I’m good enough at character design to truly figure out what’s wrong so that I can fix it. I’m not there yet. Maybe one day I can give Cloudy a proper redesign in the story, but for now, this’ll have to do.

Oh, and I think at some point I was going to name her Cloudy Miraculous, but to avoid sounding too much like a certain Ladybug I went with Wondrous instead. It sounds better too.

Oh, and I had no idea how to name Barkinson. I knew I wanted a punny dog-name but like, the best I could come up with was “Woofsie” (woof+oopsie). So I ended up asking for help from a dear friend, and they came up with “Barkinson the Third”. I loved it, added “Wonderwolf” in it and rolled with it. (Although, I was concerned “Barkinson” would be kind of a long name so I was seriously considdering having Neph call them just “Won” for short, but ended up deciding against it after enough time)
