💚🏳️‍🌈🇲🇽 This pride month I want us to remember Jesús Ociel
[Plain text: This pride month I want us to remember Jesús Ociel]
Jesús Ociel Baena Saucedo (1984-2023) was the very first non-binary person in Latin America to become an electoral magistrate, being a member of the Electoral Tribunal of Aguascalientes in Mexico since October 2022. They also received the first birth certificate to have the sex registered as Non-Binary, a big achievement in the recognition of Non-Binary people.
Tumblr media
Amongst other things, they defended trans youth, gay marriage, the fair hiring of LGBTQ+ people in the INE and overall pushed for a public acceptance and the stop of discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. Jesús was known for going to work with high heels, makeup and their iconic fan with the rainbow flag, often carrying the non-binary flag too, and they fought to give visibility to non-binary people. They won the hearts of thousands.
They are considered a very important figure for the LGBTQ+ movement, specially in Latin America, as they fought very hard to defend the rights of it, both socially and politically.
They were found dead with their partner, Dorian Daniel Herrera, in the 13th of November of 2023 in Aguascalientes, in their home. The prosecutor’s office affirms it was due to a fight the two of them had, but many say it was a hate crime; the murder of activists are not too uncommon in Mexico, and even more considering their gender identity and sexuality. The ‘crime of passion’ judgement is also often put when the death of an LGBTQ+ person happens.
Either way, their death has sparked movements to punish hate crimes, and their figure remains as a symbol of hope for a better future. Mexico has a long way to go for LGBTQ acceptance, but their actions have pushed towards that goal and their memory continues to push forward. I recommend you investigate further about them if you have the time.
And in your fight for LGBTQ+ rights and your celebrations this pride month, please do not forget about Jesús Ociel.

I'm often posting and talking about Mexico and my "mexican point of view" on media and news. This time, however, I feel deeply saddened and disappointed of my country
Yesterday, Jesus Ociel Baena, the first non-binary Mexican magistrate and their partner were found dead in their home in Aguascalientes. Magistrate Jesus Ociel was well known and recognized for their efforts to protect and promot LGBTQIA+ rights in the public sector, specially within the judiciary system.
The details are still unknown, but what it is clear is how Mexico is still a heavily LGBTQIA+-phobic, with media using incorrect pronouns and social media users celebrating the death of a person
Jesus Ociel, we name you and remember your fight for us LGBTQIA+ Mexicans

Today, Ociel Baena's lifeless body was found. Cause of death? Murder, another hate crime against a trans person.
They were the first non binary magistrate in Mexico and Latin America. They went to court rocking skirts and high heels, even when people laughed at them and sent death threats through social media. They were an activist, who always cared about their community and friends.
I am sharing this because I want more people to know about them. May they rest in power. No more trans murders!

Protests and memorials in honor of the first and only openly nonbinary Mexican magistrate, Jesús Ociel Baena Saucedo, in CDMX, Aguascalientes and Mexicali.
Tumblr media
Ociel advocated for laws protecting LGBT people, trans youth, equal marriage, gender identity recognition, between others. They inspired a lot of trans and gnc people in the country, being widely celebrated for their advocacy in court and for being open about their relationship with gender.
Tumblr media
On the morning of November 13, 2023, Ociel was found murdered with their partner in their house. Police said they didn't have "enough proof" to consider it a homicide.
Justice for Ociel, for Karen, for Renata, for Paola, for Naomi, for Dayanne, for Ivonne, for Valeria, for every trans person murdered in this country and in the world.

Rest in Power, Jesús Ociel!
Dear friends outside of Mexico: Jesús Ociel Baena, Mexico's first ever NB magistrate at the Electoral Tribunal of Aguascalientes, was found dead in their home along with their partner. Jesús was issued Mexico's first NB birth certificate, voting ID, and passport. It's a sad day.

He was killed by his male partner who then killed himself.
This is tragic but don't let the TQ+ use this to fear monger for sympathy. This is the same domestic violence committed by men that is usually ignored by the media when women are the victims.

This was Jesús Ociel Baena. They were Mexico’s first openly non binary magistrate and LGBT+ advocate. Three days ago they were found dead alongside their partner, killed.
Their actions throughout their time in office paved ways for LGBT+ Mexicans, their fight to live as they were should never go unnoticed. Mexico has a LONG way to go when it comes to queer representation and acceptance, and them being the first openly queer magistrate genuinely moved the state— their existence in office helped paved the way for future LGBT+ Mexicans to live freely, as they are. It is very dangerous in Mexico to live openly as a queer person, and their actions will forever be appreciated.

This is not the type of things i normally post on here, this is a fandom blog after all. But it is also is a queer space and I think it is important to talk about what is happening in Mexico right now.
On the morning of the 13 of November 2023 the lifeless bodies of Ociel Baena 'Le Magistrade' and their partner Dorian Herrera were found in their home in Aguascalientes. Ociel Baena was the first openly non-binary magistrate in Latin America and was one of the biggest LGBT activist in Mexico. They did so much for the Mexican LGBT community including advocating for better queer representation in elections, they fought for non binary to be an option of gender in voter ids and passport being the first person to receive both. They were an advocate for the protection of trans women.
The authorities have said that it was a "crimen pasional" or "crime of passion" and the primary theory is that it was a murder suicide done by Dorian Herrera after a domestic fight. "Crimen pasional'" is a term that mexican authorities use to undermine crimes directed towards women and minorities and it is used to close cases quickly. Ociel received hate ranging from mocking remarks and comments in social media, nasty comments from members of congress and political candidates to death threats and the LGBT community (including me) believes that it was a Hate crime.
The reaction of the public has been horrible. From the media using masculine pronouns for them, people "correcting" and leaving insensitive comments in the post of people communicating and reacting to the news, respecting their pronouns and grieving. People outside the community care more about the "improper use of the spanish language" than the fact that someone is dead.
The events of the past few days have reenforce the fact that Mexico is not a safe people from marginalised communities, as a disabled queer woman I know that and is one of the reasons I moved as soon as I got the chance but not everyone is not that privileged. I really love my culture and country, the people, the food, the traditions, the music, but I also hate the culture of misogyny, homofobia and transfobia that is so prevalent in Mexico.
Queer people are scared but Le Magistrade fought for the ability to be freely yourself and freely being loudly Queer. So to honor them we are going to be loud, proud and not hide anymore, we are going to fight their fight. Rest in peace Magistrade.

Sigh... Mexico's first nonbinary magistrate was found dead in their home along with their partner a few days ago. While the police have said that it appeared that they were killed with some sort of knife or blade, they "can't deduce that there was a third party involved", so they believe that their partner killed them before killing himself. People all across Mexico are outraged by this claim, though, because it was known that the couple had been recieving death threats since the election earlier last year I believe? And citizens are calling for justice, as they believe that this is a cover up scheme implemented by the corrupt Mexican legal system, because they don't want to confront the fact that Mexico is still a deeply homophobic country.
Descanse en poder, Ociel Baena y Dorian Herrera 💛🤍💜🖤🏳️‍🌈🇲🇽🖤💜🤍💛

oppression of lgbtq+
mexicos first openly lgbtq+ magistrate, Jesús Ociel Baena Saucedo and partner were shot, and authorities suspect anti-lgbtq+ forces committed this despicable act. The fact that Saucedo was the first openly non-binary magistrate of mexico and was shot shows how closed off the minds are of many people living in mexico, and how unfair it is to kill someone based off who they are, even if innocent. to jill someone because you don’t like that they’re apart of the lgbtq only leads to more oppression and injustice they face regularly, and if more people are harmed simply for being themselves it couldn’t potentially lead to a world where people are afraid to come out and be their true selves, just to protect their safety. how cruel, and i pray Jesús Ociel Baena Saucedo and Sauceados partner get the justice they deserve.

Today was election day in Mexico. Most trans people I know are sick and tired of a goverment that refuses to protect our lives. None of the political parties care about us. We are used as rethorical weapons, the monsters who are destroying the family or the diversity tokens who validate the actions of the ruling party.
More than 20 trans women have been murdered this year. As a result, some of us decided to use our vote to protest this injustice, writing the names of trans murder victims on the ballots.
Ociel Baena was a transgender activist, first non binary magistrate in the country, who fought for the rights of marginalized LGBT people to exist in public. They were murdered last year. I don't want to hear any politician talk about justice when none of them have made any material change to protect the lives of activists and vulnerable populations.
¡Viva Ociel Baena!
