This is a short 2 chapter FierroChase fic based on the song Pretty Boy by PoutyFace. First dates, defying death with Alex Fierro, maybe even a little drinking and dancing.

Ohhhh yes I have so many thoughts. Firstly for the vibes I have one ultimate Brainrot Song For They which is The Cult of Dionysus by the Orion Experience.

Before I was actually shipping them they already all occupied the same place in my brain because they make a neat little box of relationships- Nessa and Orome are siblings, Tulkas and Vana are their spouses along with functionally being the "youngest" of the Valar (Vana the ever young, Tulkas the last to come to Arda), Orome and Tulkas have overlapping Domains of hunting and fighting and chase after Morgoth's beasties, Nessa and Vana are considered the weakest Valar and are associated with flowers and general disney princess vibes. That's the basis I was working on.

So it started with... probably Tulkas/Orome but Nessa/Vana wasn't far behind. Tulkas/Orome is peak "construct intricate rituals to touch other men by 'wrestling' in the forest" and also I thought their character vibes suited shipping very well (Tulkas "canonically laughs in battle" Astaldo and Orome "canonically constantly pissed off" Aldaron). Even the Tolkien Gateway article directly contrasts the two. I'm working with what I've got.

Nessa/Vana have textbook fairycore forest lesbian vibes. Making each other flower crowns and braiding each other's hair and dancing in a lush clearing with birds and butterflies and bees and delightful woodland creatures (not to mention Vana's plausible association with fertility ;) Quoth Tolkien Gateway: "Vána robed Nessa with her flowers for [Nessa's] wedding." Could this be gal pals? Sure! But where's the fun in that when it's super gay! This is the least feral pairing simply because of how they relate to each other, but they're also the most shameless.

Of course the problem is that I'm a chronic canon-shipper unless I Physically Cannot Stand it, and I do very much like Orome/Vana and Nessa/Tulkas because you get fun hunter/gardener and dance/dojo vibes respectively, so I fix this the same way that I fix every problem: polyamory!

Orome/Vana has definite Hades/Persephone vibes to me, but wilder and without the whole. Kidnaping thing. Yavanna even slots nicely into Demeter's role but again, no kidnapping. She's much more chill with her brother-in-law. I have many inarticulate vibes about Orome's Domain of the hunt and dying opposing and complimenting Vana's Domain of new life and fresh growth, and how hunters weren't supposed to kill deer in the spring. Because of this, I think Vana is one of the few Valar who has no subjugation(?) at all to Orome's Domain despite the clear nature overlap (others who wouldn't are Varda, Namo, Vaire, Nienna, and Aule, but that's because their Domains don't really overlap with his at all, except for Namo who as Death would overpower Dying.) They are, functionally, each other's force-pairs in Newton's third law- the equal and opposite reactions.

My love for Nessa/Tulkas is more characterization related: to me, they are the epitome of those 20-something Fitness Couples who keep those super detailed daily planners with spots to fill in how much water you drank, who make really healthy delicious looking meals with seemingly no effort and constantly drink various smoothies but like. Fantasy Flavor. Their idea of a hot date is to spot each other at the gym, and martial arts sparring. They would go feral for Capoeira. Crucially, they thrive off of this. Their relationship is astonishingly healthy and peppy and they serve as each other's hype-man. My vibes-only Valar-in-modern-society AU has them opening a strip mall dance class/dojo place.

So we have the siblings, and the spouses, and the spouse swap (which has some very funny crack potential, I specifically find it amusing to imagine Nessa calling dibs on Vana and tossing Tulkas to Orome before stealing her away (they are both very amused, Orome is vaguely aggravated because she could just ask for time with their wife)

Tulkas/Vana starts as something like a relationship of convenience, along the lines of "Hey, our spouses are busy chasing each other around like idiots for Sibling Shenanigans, want to make out?" but ends up as something not quite romantic but past... FWBs I guess lol. A foundation of their relationship is committing to the bit- If Nessa and Orome are arguing it's even odds as to who will side with who, but if either of them has an argument with Tulkas or Vana it is the other's sworn duty to side with their bestie, no matter how utterly stupid. They will "Yes-And" each other's stories into eternity, even if it's a blatantly untrue excuse. This drives their spouses absolutely insane because "I know you're lying, and I know you know I know you're lying, and I know for a fact that you weren't doing something as dumb as convincing Aule to put smiley face shapes in rocks" but they will double down. (The one time they did this to Yavanna while on a warpath was unintentional and terrifying once they realized, but they committed and got her so frustrated and confused that she bluescreened and stormed off, forgetting why she had been interrogating Vana in the first place). Basically, they bring out the idiot in each other, and despite having very little in common they get along very well. It is also important to me that I see their typical physical forms as being a massive, firey, golden-veined stone giant (Tulkas), and a young, uncanny, bug-eyed and golden-haired hobbit lass (Vana). To the Valar this doesn't really register as strange beyond vague inconvenience for interacting, but to any elves who see them hanging out together it Very Much Is.

To use the terms I used in Appointed, Orome and Vana are Counterpoints, Nessa and Tulkas, Nessa and Vana, and Orome and Tulkas are Harmonies, and Nessa and Orome are Tone-mates and Harmonies. Tulkas and Vana are not quite Harmonies but they harmonize regardless. Don't mind if this makes no sense lol.

What’s new in the AU?

Leo: Well, I’m fucking dead, so-

THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO AVOID SPOILERS!

Leo attempted using the Physician’s Cure, but there were complications as Festus tried to revive him, and he was instead claimed by the Valkyrie. All other events through Blood of Olympus remain unchanged.

Months have passed since his real-world death, leaving his friends to mourn both his and Magnus’ deaths in the time that it took for him to arrive at HV. Magnus Chase and Annabeth Chase have been in contact (as the events of Sword of Summer are also unchanged), so he is aware of the Greek pantheon; however, he had not yet, at that time, met Leo or otherwise connected the dots prior to the start of this blog.

Leo arrives in Valhalla right before Alex Fierro, meaning that the Hammer of Thor is running in parallel to his initial adjustment to the Hotel. He will not be participating in all events of HoT, but many may be referenced, altered, or used as inspiration throughout the blog. HoT and SotD will both happen to an extent (on and off screen).

Magnus Chase is set to meet with Annabeth and Percy again as Ship of the Dead is inevitable. There will be implications before and after this happens.

Namely, in canon, they are crying over Jason's death. Meaning, ToA is running in parallel.

This is where it takes a little bit of imagination and a little bit of playing along, later on! At the same time as the blog & Hammer of Thor, Trials of Apollo (kind of) happens. Most of The Hidden Oracle running parallel to SoS is canonically unchanged, but The Dark Prophecy requires Lester, Calypso, and Festus to complete their quests without Leo himself. Narratively, I don’t really mind the thought of Calypso saving herself when Festus arrives alone, attempting to nurse Leo’s old body, but Festus and Leo alike grieve for their friendship.

Leo is building a new Festus body, but it won’t become his Festus until later in the story…

Similarly, The Burning Maze remains mostly unchanged, with Jason’s death following the events of canon (that is to say, 6 months after BoO/Leo’s death). He is, indeed, broken up with Piper at this point, but without Leo, she is left to mourn with Festus. Her role in this story will come later down the line…

(Yes, they broke up because they were incompatible types of queer; Jason is still processing HoH by his arrival)

While Jason is immediately claimed by the Valkyrie to bring to Valhalla upon his death, it is still TBD when his specific arrival happens in line with SotD, interactions between the Chase cousins, and the canon of V²AU.

The magnus protocol theory - greek mythology themes

@torkhin @amelie-isnt-french @field-cryptobotanist & I have been picking up on some greek mythology associations (more specifically the odyssey) in protocol. We might be onto something or it might just be the craziest red herring ever.

There are definitely connections between alchemy and greek mythology, so who knows at this point, am i right??

(Myth explanation: Palamedes was a greek ally but also an enemy of Odysseus. He tricked Odysseus, who was trying to get out of joining the trojan war by acting insane, into revealing himself when Odysseus' baby was threatened. Odysseus never forgave him and framed him for being a traitor and then had him killed by the rest of the greeks or killed Palamedes himself in some accounts.

Now get this: Palamedes is the inventor of dice gave the first dice to Tyche, the goddess of good and bad luck.)

As for background, she’s from London and her parents are pretty big in the archaeology world. She started putting out covers on YT when she was 13, and eventually started [1/2]

writing her own songs. She uploaded a lot of unreleased songs to YT (they’ve since been deleted but they’re also on SoundCloud), and put out her debut EP at 18 and recently got signed to Apollo’s Delphi Records (technically second official artist signed, if we’re including Nico) [2/2]

THE MYSTERY OF NICO’S SKULL RING: A THREAD

Sep 27, 2015: the skull ring is first seen, albeit blurry, in jason grace’s vlog around his school, in which nico is sitting in their school cafeteria. it’s on his right ring finger, as it always has been (that we know of, logically he may have worn it on his middle or index finger when younger)

May 21, 2016: it’s once again seen in nico’s first appearance on apollo’s insta, before we even knew his name. during this time, nico had been working on ‘haunted’ with apollo, and was already known as his insta user “the ghost king,” which ties into the skull/ghost/death theme

June 18, 2016: the skull ring is on the back cover of ‘haunted’s vinyl and its tracklist. it’s pretty much the centerpiece of the image, with his hand mostly covering his face.

There are several more appearances of the skull ring, he practically never takes it off. It’s seen in his pictures at the AMA’s, VMA’s, Grammys, and pretty much every other public appearance of his from 2016 - 2018.

Since then, he hasn’t been seen wearing the ring ONCE. Several other rings take the place on the right ring finger, but the skull ring’s pretty identifiable - and the ones he’s worn since are noticeably different. so, that leaves the question: what happened to it? why did nico stop wearing it?

This is based off a post i saw truly forever ago about a concept pertaining to magic and spell slots.

Day 5: ow!/meow

Lup and Magnus are in a bind. He's hurt, she's out of spell slots, it's time for something drastic.

In hindsight, they probably should've left the cave as soon as they heard the heavy breathing. Then they should've left when they saw the massive sleeping creature. But if there's one thing Lup and Magnus are going to be, it's dumb and brave. Now, they're getting chased deeper into the cave by a goddamn building-sized tiger.

They tried to stand their ground and fight it, but it got some really good hits on Magnus, and Lup's only got so many hit points. So they ran. They're hoping for a way out, or a wide spot where they can loop around back to the entrance, but the cave only seems to get deeper and darker.

She's used all her slots shooting spells behind her as she ran, and the creature's definitely slowed down, but not enough. She can hear Magnus's laboured breathing beside her, and she knows he's slowing down too. The beast swiped him right in the chest earlier, knocking the wind out of him and at least bruising a few ribs. This needs to end, ideally without them dying.

She has an idea. A really stupid idea that she's not even sure will work and for sure guarantee her immediate capture and death if it doesn't work, thereby guaranteeing Magnus's death because he'd never leave a friend behind. But she's read the books, heard the testimonies, it is possible.

She tries to level her breathing as best she can, and wills forward as much magic as possible. It makes her skin tingle and her vision swim. She can feel it collecting at her fingertips, but she doesn't let it go yet. This needs to be big. She takes another deep breath and ignores the heat she can feel radiating off of her. Her hands feel like there's countless needles pricking her palms. The heat grows, and she knows it's now or never. She plants her feet and whirls around to face the beast, her hands outstretched. A column of white hot flame bursts from her palms and engulfs it. Lup screams with the roar of the flames, and the beast yowls as it's reduced to ash.

When the flames die down, Lup collapses to her hands and knees. She feels like there's live wires running through her blood vessels. She's trembling, she feels sick, and black spots float through her vision. She squeezes her eyes shut to try and counteract the pounding in her head.

"-ly shit, Lup!" Magnus's voice comes into focus. "I thought you were out of slots."

"I was," she chokes out.

"Then how-"

"Magnus," she pleads.

"Right, let's get you out of here. Can you walk?"

She reaches an arm out for him to help her up, and she struggles slowly to her feet. She leans heavily against him and begins her stumble back towards the cave entrance, but her head is spinning in fifteen different directions, and her skin is tingling all over. It feels like it's been an eternity when Magnus says, "um, maybe it'd be better if I carried you back to the ship. We'll get there faster."

"You're injured."

"Not as badly as you are. I'll be fine."

She lets him scoop her up into his arms, and he takes off in a jog through the cave. When they emerge back in the wilderness, the sun is blinding. It turns the dull pounding behind her eyes into a searing headache. She groans and buries her face in Magnus's neck to try and block it out.

Her ears are ringing by the time they make it back to the ship. Magnus explains what happened, and after some incredulity from Taako, they get her set up in bed with all the lights off and a cool cloth over her eyes. "You're stupid," Taako says as he tucks her in, "you could've died."

"But I didn't."

"But you could have."

"Um," Magnus says from somewhere farther back, "I'm still confused about what even happened."

Taako tuts. "You channel magic through yourself. The whole point of levels and spell slots is to make sure you don't burn yourself up. A higher level spell takes more magic to cast, so a brand new wizard would probably destroy themselves trying to cast it, and a more experienced one can do it once or twice and be fine. also I don’t think the communication errors do affect the Norse nor do the errors being resolved in SOTD mean that the book takes place after TON (unless there’s some other indication of that). Because the errors are because of Harpocrates, and he’s a Ptolemic/Greek god and the pantheons typically stay in their own bubbles, right? Magnus not being able to contact Annabeth would be more because of Annabeth rather than Magnus. And then Harpocrates fades in TTT, so the communications are being restored, albeit maybe slower, which only indicates SOTD is after TTT, which, yeah that’s a given.

For me, I was under the impression SOTD and TON took place roughly at the same time, not TON being over before SOTD? I haven’t read much of SOTD yet so pardon me, I won’t know if a small detail indicates it’s after TON, but I do know Percy and Annabeth are in Boston at the beginning and at the end at Camp Jupiter where they hear about Jason’s death. And considering how they’re absent on a roadtrip to Camp Jupiter in TON, they must’ve stopped at Boston on the way. So TON and SOTD take place during their roadtrip and at the end of both, they’ve arrived. In fact, in TON it seems like they’ve at least processed Jason’s death enough while in SOTD, the wound seems fresher which means by the time Apollo awoke at Olympus (likely in those two weeks he was out), SOTD concluded? Of course this is only based off their reaction to Jason’s death, and TON epilogue is slightly hazy in my mind so that doesn’t really mean anything.

Ramadan changes every year because it’s the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be spring, though in the past few years it has been around spring. If SOTD is taking place during Ramadan, I think it tells more about the particular year of the setting rather than month because Ramadan will change every year, but we know SOTD has to take place in late spring/early summer, so the year of MCGA and TOA is a year where Ramadan is around that time.

I’ll be honest I have not read ship of the dead in roughly a month so I completely forgot that Percy was even in that. Yeah, so SOD is before TON then. I think in my head I remember Ramadan happening May and for some reason I just assumed it was in May for the book, which is why I pictured it happening around TON or after?

That also makes sense with Harpocrates affecting the Greek/Roman demigods. I thought it would also affect all demigods but Magnus being able to communicate just not with Annabeth or any of the Greek demigods would make sense especially if it the first two books happen before TTT and SOD happens or during that?

That’s also just crazy how quickly the events in Magnus Chase occur since i think it starts around the same time as THO? I figured it was at least six months for the three books but it’s looking more like 3-4 months while ToA is just going between 6-8 months (thanks tsats for saying the trogs have lived months in the underworld and that it’s been a while since anyones seen Apollo)

We really need a clear timeline for these books. There’s few dates mentioned but at least today is Lester’s birthday (4/8) and Eclipse day which is just funny to me.

the way rick riordan writes is one part what makes his books so good, like in magnus chase and the gods of asgard there's serious topics such as homelessness, racism, psychological abuse, death etc etc, there's worldbuilding, there's subjects where it's clear he's done his research on before writing them down instead of just slapping shit down. the mythology is there even tho it's written differently to fit the theme of the story. there's dwarves in southern boston hsoting crafting competitions and elves living in a eternal daylight capitalist realm where everything's too perfect and the sun never sets. there's diversity in more than one way, people who come from different places, different backgrounds, different identities, even people with disabilities but who still face discrimination on their part. there's LGBTQIA+ representation that isn't half-assed or created just to be the butt of a joke. the hammer of thor literally introduces capitalism and shows just how evil it is, and the ship of the dead shows how that capitalism is destroyed while preventing the end of all nine worlds.

the story and the mythology and the characters and the occasional fun scenes are what makes them so good but especially the characters.

there's like,, so many reasons why that is my favorite series from him and why i will die on this hill no matter what.

also i haven't read percy jackson so don't ask me about that

First of all I have to say that this couple has two aus in the transformers prime continuity and only one in the cyberverse one (Cyberverse shockwave is so cute......)

Au: Encounters (Prime continuity)

In this au it's very calm, it basically consists of my oc Skyr being a security guard at one of the oldest museums in Iacon, when one night a special relic is stolen, Skyr chases the thief to the outskirts and runs into a scientist very hermit to have any contact with another bot in years

As time goes by, both share scientific and historical knowledge, a couple of nerds alone for so long....

I would say that they both stay together on Cybertron for all that time and they both return to the Nemesis, everyone finds it strange that Shockwave is so attached with Skyr, who only suspects something is obviously Knock Out, while Starscream annoys Shockwave by saying that they seem to be like conjuxes.

Both tend to keep everything very normal, Shockwave is a little embarrassed to receive "affection" in public so their dates and special moments are usually private.

Au: "This is illogical, right?" (prime continuity)

This plot is more normal

Shockwave often has trouble facing one of the bots closest to ultra Magnus, Skyr, a femme who specializes in tactical attack, she is small and fast, too fast for a heavy tank like shockwave.

Skye usually prefers to fight Shockwave because she likes watching him Fight to catch it, dream of knocking it down a couple of times to joke with it and make fun, they are quite enemies and lovers, They usually have moments of tension that can turn romantic where they both wonder how they ended up like this????

Cyberverse

It all starts before the war, when Skyr and Shockwave were companions, Without ideological differences, they greatly enjoyed a long courtship, dating and so on, so even during the war they did not pause it.

Having secret exits from the autobots and Decepticons, leaving through planet Earth.

However, this ship ends badly, when they are discovered in the middle of the meeting, the groups of both factions begin to shoot each other, in an attempt to stop the dispute and explain what was happening, they hope able to reach an agreement, however Skyr suffered from crossfire, resulting in her death from a gunshot that is never identified.

They may all be illogical because of how Shockwave is, but hey, I don't care much, I'm happy with it.

mainly bc i'm a person with an excellent eye for unhealthy dynamics (i have much experience with them, but also i'm just very good at detecting power imbalances in relationships) and i felt like discussing them.

keep in mind, i'm fine with ppl who ship (i ship quite a few as well) these. i am just not fine with them being written like they were in canon, because they were deeply unhealthy.

warning: discussions of unhealthy relationships, death relating to valhalla's to-the-death activities (alluded to), abuse, (and because i don't want people clamoring unless they have questions and want me to clarify things, which i am perfectly happy to do, unless your rude) discussions of popular riordanverse ships being toxic/abusive/unhealthy

i'll be honest---i haven't ever read hoo, and i never will. i just don't have the patience for it. but when ppl can quote lines abt a relationship being at least toxic, and at most abusive?? i get pushed off any ship real quick.

homes will discuss unhealthy relationships, will display the characters working through the problems presented within their relationships as they grow throughout the story. but i will never, ever, write an endgame toxic and/or abusive ship.

i loved percabeth in the pjo books, for the most part---even if i think it kind of overshadows all the other amazing ships out there, other than solangelo, for the most part. i'm not leaving solangelo out of this either.

anyways, i won't write endgame percabeth. that's just not gonna happen. they'll stay friends, and i've honestly preferred it that way for a long while. they just don't really fit together. i wasn't planning for them to stay together (you will see them together, but there will be some identity shenagins that annabeth will have to realise and imma be going through canon's mess, as well), because of an idea i've had for a while, that eventually birthed the ace-/aro-spec chase joke (magnus in homes is ace, natalie is aro, etc)

so, something i noticed when reading toa, is that will carries a lot of the emotional burden in his relationship with nico. i mean, he's fucking keeping him alive!! that's not something your partner should have to do. and by that i mean, your partner should not have to bear the burden of being the only thing keeping you alive---that's a fuck-ton of emotional labour, and i will give nico points for seeking some help, but i'm still re-working their relationship.

please do note that almost every relationship change spirals from my main relationship change of alex and magnus's healthy, consensual, and very queer, but not necessarily "typical" to society relationship. most of these characters have never really had a healthy relationship in their faces during their childhoods---i mean, percy has paul and sally, but their relationship is later, and they don't exactly push boundaries to make people reconsider their relationships and emotions. (i.e. alex and magnus are in a non-heterosexual, completely non-sexually-intimate (except for the very rare kiss on the lips, but it never gets further than that), healthy relationship that has extremely close ties to the kids in question)

so, i absolutely adore fierrochase. i think they are, honestly, one of the healthiest relationships displayed within the entire riordanverse (they bow to carter & zia. blitzstone, sam & amir, hazel & frank (i think), and partially sadie x waltnubis which is only partial bc they have problems to work out, btw) that are majorly present and that i consistently remember bc i have adhd shit memory.

but i also must recognise, because this is a point i wish to make for later on, that any dynamic based upon killing your partner is unhealthy. no, i don't care that they can resurrect, that is still fucking traumatising. i will mention that them killing each other/magnus constantly being killed by alex is a mostly fandom-specific plot, so congrats, rick, there's one healthy relationship that's canon (and there are quite a few other ones, but i'm mainly pointing out the idealised ones).

they respect each other's boundaries, are learning about each other, and are taking their time to figure out their relationship. it's not really shown in canon---mainly because we get so little time with alex and magnus in a more-than-friends capacity, but we still see a lot of equal ground between the two of them. which is fucking important.

anyways: mallory x halfborn.

y'know the comment i made about dynamics based upon killing your partner are unhealthy a paragraph ago? yeah, this is what i was talking about.

one of the biggest bases, if mallory and halfborn were real, of their relationship would be fear. mainly because you would fear your killer. yeah, you can get desensitized to it, but you shouldn't have to become numb to fear of your partner just to continue being with them. no one is at fault here, and i will show that in the one-shot that discusses mallory & halfborn's relationship. i'm kind of horrified that their relationship is a thing that exists. i mean, can you imagine never knowing when your partner will just to decide to kill you, and did, and has?? even if you can't die permamently, that fear would stick.

especially in homes, where the battle scars stay. magnus will have a scar on their neck from the one time (just the once, and they discussed it afterwards), all of them have scars. (why i changed this will be part of another post.)

i can't write a relationship like that. one of homes' largest themes is healing, is growth, is escaping unhealthy thought patterns and relationships. the song that backs the entire series is don't panic by coldplay, if you wish to know the ideas i'm aiming to represent.

jason & piper, and calypso & leo are also problematic but not generally idealised within the books or by the fandom, and i can cover them later because i don't see much about them (personally) and because i am running out of steam.

Febuwhump Day 25: Waterboarding Alternate 7: Last Words Fandom: Final Fantasy XIV Characters/Ship: Agna/Magnus Triggers/Content warnings: Child death (background)

The lantern gutters out at last, leaving her in darkness. She could re-light it, of course.

But there's no need. She's never been afraid of the dark.

Agna lies still in the inky blackness that swallows her, counting her breaths - one will be her last, she knows; very soon. Her legs are still pinned beneath the rubble that had once been a familiar mine: before the lantern had gone out, she'd recognized her own handiwork on some of the boulders crushing her. Places she'd dug, plunging herself into the earth in search of leonine; chasing her boy's dream.

Skuli. The hollow place in her heart where her son should be.

Will Magnus bury her with their boy?

They'd brought him home; the eaters had been generous enough to leave them a body to bury. It was meant to be no more than that, at first: bringing Skuli home, to the town he remembered so clearly - though he'd been so young when they'd left; just barely eight summers. But the trolleys! Oh, he remembered the trolleys. Though it's a knife in her ribs, Agna smiles at the memory of her boy begging Magnus to go back to Twine, back to Twine, to see the trolleys running again...

It was meant to be no more than that, bringing Skuli home. Home to rest.

But the state of the tracks, the trolley cars, the broken-down and dismembered Talos...

"It's not in as bad a shape as I thought it'd be," Magnus had remarked, after they'd finally pulled themselves away from the small grave.

And Agna had smiled. "With a little work and some willing hands, I expect we could get it running again."

So they'd settled back into life in Twine, with one piece missing, always missing.

She'd found Skuli's name carved into a wall where her boy's bed used to be, and had sat there for an hour, tracing the shallow letters. He must've done it while he was meant to be napping - gotten bored, and etched his name in the old wood. Naughty boy! He must have kept it hidden with blankets and pillows, praying they'd never find it; the scolding he would've gotten...

"Skuli," she says now, her voice hoarse in the black stillness. "Skuli, please..."

Magnus had found her sitting by the wall, unable to move. Unwilling to leave. It wasn't like her to vanish into grief like that - no, that was Magnus. Magnus with his long fits of melancholy...

He'll be alright. It'll be alright.

Her hand closes tighter around the precious stone clutched to her chest.

She couldn't give him another child - the first had been something of a miracle, unlooked-for. They'd not expected to become parents, and had been content in that: he had his work; she had hers, and they had each other. It was enough. And then they had Skuli...

...and then they didn't.

She couldn't give him another child, but she could breathe life into the Talos, and bring their son's dream back to life. Leonine, the heart of the Talos. Lifeblood of old Nabaath; lifeblood of Twine.

Worth dying for.

She'd found it, here in these weak-walled tunnels. She'd gauged the risks, weighed her options... and cast her lot, throwing caution to the wind. For her trouble, crushed legs, uncountable yalms of rubble sealing her fate... and a chunk of leonine the size of her own heart, more than suitable to power a Talos for a few generations. One life to save her son's dream.

She only prays Magnus sees it that way; seizes on the stone she found. She fears he'll lose himself to grief.

She fears he already has.

No. No. He'll keep searching.

He'll dig until he finds her, even knowing it's too late. They'd brought their son home to Twine; Magnus won't stop until he can do the same for her, laying her to rest with their boy. He'll find the leonine, here with her. He'll know she found it. He'll know she found it for him, for them; for everything they set out to achieve.

She's dizzy now. Not enough air.

Soon.

Magnus.

Will he find joy again, she wonders? He's found purpose, at least, in his work on restoring the trolleys. And perhaps family, of a sort; if Agna cannot give him more children, fate has seen fit to put them in his path regardless: Thaffe, Jeryk, and Bekwyl would be sons to him, if he'll let them... but perhaps he sees too much of Skuli in them, in their eagerness to learn about trolleys.

Someday, perhaps.

She hopes so.

She feels heavy, sleepy.

Magnus...

Will he know why she left? Why she had to leave? Why this was...

This was...

Can't think. Memories, little flickers. Skuli laughing. Magnus packing up their things. Skuli bringing trinkets home. Rocks. Leaves. She carries one of his rocks in her pocket, always. Hopes Magnus buries it with her. Magnus singing a love song, while they were courting. Shy and awkward. Never much of a romantic. Mattered that he tried. Made her wedding ring himself. Ugly thing. Precious thing. She hopes he buries that with her, too.

Heart beating. Slow and sluggish.

Soon.

She fumbles for the knife in her pocket, knows she risks cutting herself in the process. Doesn't matter.

Last of her strength. Make it count.

Leonine's soft. Good for etching.

Like Skuli's name on the wall.

Naughty boy.

Can't see in the dark. Doesn't need to.
