Underrated MHA Character Poll: The Second One

And here's your reward for participating in the shitpost poll. The new bracket! Just like the last one, rounds were determined randomly.

Not every recommendation made it in. For the most part, I added them on a first come first serve basis but for the sake of variety some suggestions were placed ahead of others. If a character you sent a suggestion for didn't make it, they already have a spot reserved for the next poll.

We also have Vigilante characters now! From the results of the survey polls, I'll keep their inclusion at an overall minimum since they're unfamiliar to a lot of fans but I still want to add in the major original characters from the spin off over time.

Rounds will start posting on Sunday, April 16th!

Keep in mind that poll schedules have changed from last time. We'll be posting 4 polls every day, somewhere between 9am and 12pm EST, with the updated bracket posting on Thursday and the next round picking up the following Sunday. So be sure to keep an eye out for when your favs are up.

Following the Goncharov (1973) meme storm taking over Tumblr during November 2022, Creating Goncharov takes an alternative reality approach where this fake movie existed - though, you do not remember ever seeing it. Set to create a pitch for a remake, the game takes a deep dive into the lore and the many theories regarding this shitpost. More than that, Creating Goncharov is about finding passion in your work and creating relationships.

Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.

At the beginning, all is dull and irritating. The path to your place of work is slippery from the snow, your desk is in a cubicle nowhere close to natural light, and you expect today to be as boring as every other day you've had so far. 'Tis the life of an office drone. Except...

...you find an interesting proposition from your boss in your inbox - one you cannot refuse* - you are tasked to create a pitch for a remake of Goncharov and 1973 totally real and acclaimed movie, coined as the 'best mafia movie ever created'. Which is great, since you've been trying to get that kind of opportunity. But... you cannot for the life of you remember ever watching that movie. * hahaha like in mafia movies

You are also forced to work with Al*, a co-worker you look down on - even though they are your superior - because you don't believe they deserve their job. Through exchanges with Al, it is not really clear whether they have seen that movie either, or whether they are competent at all (would they take your idea as pass it as theirs?). Still, they have readied some bare bone documentation to help you start. *the author self-insert - do they believe the criticism/jabs they wrote about Al B? I hope not...

There is little time and not much to go on, but you still push through and ready a pitch for your boss by the meeting time. And...

...you fail. But, this was expected, considering your lack of knowledge about the original piece and of concrete information about the plot, themes, or scenes even. As if, you were meant to fail... who gives a remake of a well-loved movie to a newbie...

At this point, you can end... or, if you believe in this remake and your ideas, push through and proclaim you will make the movie by yourself if that's what it requires!

This is where strange things start to happen...

You go to work the next day, and things feel more... vibrant? The air is not as stale, the office is brighter, you even notice other people during your commute. More than that... your computer boots to the same day as before, showing the same unread email as when the game first started.

In some weird Grounghog Day scenario, you are given a second chance at putting your pitch together, retaining (partly) not only your previous found knowledge about the movie but also the (now-edited) documents Al had sent you the day/loop before. Speaking of Al, they are in this loop more forth coming with their view on the project, their knowledge of the movie, and their friendliness toward you.

While the first loop focused on the general overview, discussing the themes, or (re-)naming the characters, this loop gets into the nit and gritty of the plot. You and Al spend hours ironing out some details about the sequence of events and highlighting potential strong points. There is a lot there you can edit, and show off your creative liberties (with cycle links).

But again, this is not enough to sway the investors. You have not gone deep enough. You're still missing something important: you have not pitched the scenes!

And this is where the final loop comes in.

Yet again, the descriptions about your environment changes once more, and you notice how beautiful it is. It is also then that you notice the building's receptionist (and even remember her name and exchange some words!). The people in your mail box also change from jokey puns to actual names - they are not just nameless cogs but actual full human beings.

The exchanges between Al and you are also more developed and much more friendly. You even seem more passionate about the project than you ever were before! Even as you wait for your boss's email at the end of the day, you have the option to do something outside of work, even grow your relationship with Al.

Obviously, this time around, the pitch is a success (on my run at least, it is possible to fail a third time apparently). The movie is made, and wins tons of awards, setting you for a fulfilling career path.

With over 50 thousand words, the game covers most if not all of the "lore" created during this meme craze. In the many edits you can make, it manages to essentially give an overview of what had been discussed on Tumblr about this fake movie*. Depending on your choices, you may see quite a lot of change in variation down the line (inserting Marting Scorceses as your name for example). *with the plot document in the second loop especially, it felt a bit like those Archive documents the community created to keep track of all the lore.

The attention to details is both a major part of the gameplay, enabling you to "win" the game, and of the prose, through the subtle change in the environment/your behaviour outside of work. This is also a major point of the "movie", as recurrent details embodying time, religion, and change, were put in the forefront of the Goncharov discourse.

The change in tone in the interactions between Al and the player throughout the game feel believable, as you become acquainted with them and find a shared passion in the "movie". The exchanges of emails in the third loop is particularly lovely, and the scenes with them while waiting for that final email is quite sweet. Albie has a great command of their writing style in that area.

There were a few icks that made me tick a bit:

While the inclusion of a Martin Scorcese timeline (if you enter your name as MS) garners some fun responses and variation, it felt a bit out of place when other characters behave in the same way they would if the player has chosen any other name. It was funny that Mr. Scorcese failed the pitch, but the joke becomes a bit stale past the first loop. [In the same vein, no one questioned me when I chose the same name as existing characters/employees]

Some formatting of the text made it sometimes hard to follow along. The fake shared GoogleDoc you edit in the second loop reloads multiple times but doesn't indicate clearly where you last left off (maybe a small translucent horizontal bar?). The email exchanges between Al B and the MC in the third loop could have distinguished better the bits between a description of a scene/dialogues and the emailers just discussing it (indentation, italics, change of font...). I didn't particularly liked the browser errors (a screen popup would have been a bit nicer and easier to close) or the lack of contrast when a popup was on screen (a slightly shaded overlay would have helped separate the elements).

The lack of discussion of the day restarting felt a bit like a missed opportunity. It might not have needed much, just the player getting a bit of anxiety or questioning their sanity from reliving the same day. Even if it can be brushed off because the player can have a do-over on their pitch, the fact that the player doesn't even flinch at the emails they receive is strange*. It could be interesting to have the player fail forever and only manage to break the loop if they give up on 'creating Goncharov (2023)' or it turns out their "win" was just a dream... *there is just the words "Déjà vu" at the end of the second loop...

With the edits of the second loop being so extensive (building on the smaller edits of the first one), the gameplay of the final loop felt lacking. You essentially read through threads of emails between yourself and Al, discussing the scenes, but you have no choice in how they are described (they do have some variation depending on previous edits). I think it would have been nice (maybe for a future update?) if Al or the MC disagreed on some points (e.g: plot points contradict each other) and the MC had to make some choices. There is a bit of an unbalance in player input in the current version.

While time is of the essence, having to scramble to create a pitch in a few hours, the game doesn't "punish" you for taking all the time in the world (e.g. discussing every scene, even though Al presses you to wrap up).

Considering this game was made in less than 3 weeks (during finals!), includes this complexity in story, the high word count, a custom UI, and interactive elements further than simple choice lists, Creating Goncharov is very impressive. It is clear the author has put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this project.

From essentially using every fan theory out there about the fake-movie, to creating full scenes based on fan-edit posts on Tumblr, using the motifs (the clock, the apple, etc...) reblogged by hundreds of users, or including music created for the meme, Ablie has done their research and dove deep into the lore of the meme. They seemed to have spared no (effort) expense in creating... Creating Goncharov.

Bravo!

Resist Psychic Death - Possessed Newt. (Undergoing structural changes.)

The Tropes Nobody Asked For - A bodyswap AU. This would be complete if I could come up with a concluding paragraph to wrap things up.

I could be writing sweaty nerd sex like a normal person but no - Mostly a story about self-image. Angst. Fluff. There is no plot. Some kind of stream of consciousness BS. (Complete in the sense that anything can be complete given continuity of identity within linear flow of time.) It wasn't complete. Turns out I'm writing sweaty nerd sex but not like a normal person. Scrapped. Wtf I don't know. Maybe not everything needs to have a plot.

Heating Pad - A cat adopts Hermann.

Miserable, Lonely and Depressed (Pathetic) - The return of Cool Uncle Newt. (He's not cool, he's possessed.)

Vampire AU - I mean obviously I had to write a vampire AU at some point. (Comedy.)

Whump - Was supposed to be about a car accident, but it turned into emotional hurt/comfort. With pie.

Some Days You Just Can't Get Rid of a Bomb - Newt tries to solve capitalism. I don't think this is even going anywhere, but I like the title too much to let it go.

Retail Horror Stories - Newt and Hermann commiserate over the shitty jobs they worked when they were younger. (Maybe scrapped because honestly no one needs my nonfiction about MegaKaren.) Scrapped because people are gross.

The Graves Stood Tenantless - Comedy, it was SUPPOSED TO BE A COMEDY Death of a major character. 30k word novella about grief APPARENTLY. Still lacking final chapter and epilogue.

Nightmares - Ghost drift bleeds into their dreams. This would also be complete if I could come up with a concluding paragraph to wrap things up.

Cold as Ice - Hurt/Comfort? Something. Contains no hurt/comfort and has nothing to do with cold or ice, but...it's...something. A convergence of "whoever will take him" and (numbers) "will never betray me". Hurt people hurt people, but survivors can be kind.

Newt's Passion - A sex pollen fic. (No, it isn't.) (Zom com.)

Other, Funnier Ghost Story - Will it be a comedy this time? Let's find out. It is a comedy but it's about vampires now. OH GOD. Not a ghost story, not remotely funny. Vampires, full horror. I'm tempted to resurrect my old pen name for this one. (Y.A. Gorefest, Jr.)

So, are the gods in ASOIAF real?

It's kinda been bugging me for a while. The Night King is obviously a thing, and dragons, but we never get exact confirmation for any of the major religions. So I'm gonna look at some of this stuff and see what I can find.

Major spoilers ahead, from all the books up to ADWD. I'm just gonna assume you have some prior knowledge of ASOIAF.

The Horse Gods? (Dothraki)

Either the Dosh Khaleen are just really shit at prophecies, or this is one deity (deities? wtf is even going on here) that we can cross off the list. Been a while since I read AGOT but all I really remember is Irri and Jhiqui echoing "It is known" all the time.

Overall, I'm gonna call horsebullshit.

The Drowned God (Iron Islands)

Like most of the deities in this list, we don't have any actual proof that the Drowned God exists, as long as we accept the fact that Aeron is really, really good at CPR. No Godless Man May Sit The Seastone Chair is a decent counterexample as well, since Euron manages pretty well on top of the Ironborn hierarchy.

Final opinion? Probably not real.

The Seven (South Westeros)

Again, not much proof that they are real. We don't see any answered prayers (especially not for Catelyn, RIP). The idea of Trial By Combat is also supposed to be up to the Seven, but obviously in the case of Tyrion's trial, it's not quite in divine hands. Based on that, we could disprove the Seven, but it's not exactly an airtight allegation.

To conclude, I will not be running for High Septon, and not just because of their short lifespan.

The Old Gods (North Westeros)

Ok, here's where things get interesting. Bran looking through the weirwood trees raises interesting arguments. The Children of the Forest are obviously not gods, so have the Northmen just been wrongly interpreting the signs? The Stark siblings' warg abilities are also throwing me for a loop. It's certainly magic, but is it divine?

I'm gonna leave this one up for debate.

R'hllor and the Night King (Essos & Free Cities & Westeros)

Ok, so, at least half of this bit is real. The magic zombies lend some credibility to Melisandre's cult. Stannis cuts down Renly and Courtnay Penrose using Melisandre's shadows. The Brotherhood Without Banners also supports the Red God's existence - Beric Dondarrion and Lady Stoneheart are living(?) proof. Thoros' and Melisandre's visions seem to be correct, if vague. Stannis' Kingsblood leeches seem to do the trick - Balon, Robb, and Joffrey all meet their ends shortly after his ritual on Dragonstone. Melisandre's glamour to hide Mance Rayder is another good example of the Red God's power.

So, clearly there is some kind of divine intervention here. Which leads us to

The Many-Faced God (Braavos, etc.)

The most interesting of the lot, and certainly hard to disprove. While the Servants certainly have some interesting magic (cutting off people's faces, etc.), it's not necessarily divine. Most of their power seems to be learned, not bestowed, as is the case for R'hllor. While I can appreciate the connections between different religions - including casting the Night King and the Stranger as interpretations of the Many-Faced God - it's not at the same level as the Red Priests.

TL;DR

While we don't have explicitly stated conformation of the existence of gods, I will take a leap of faith and say that R'hllor does exist, though the extent of his power remains to be seen. If he's been battling the Night King for centuries, perhaps he doesn't have the capacity to interact with the mortal world beyond the occasional smite, resurrection, and prophecy.

FEBUWHUMP 2023 WRAP-UP

Now that I finished Febuwhump 2023, I thought about doing a summary of my work. I never wrote anything before, let alone posted it online, so this was all pretty exciting (if sometimes a little stressful) for me 🤫 Thanks to @febuwhump for hosting this event!

🏆 My Favorites

The most fun writing I had with DAY 12. The slow change of Henshaw's mental stability was really interesting to explore, especially because of his first-person perspective. The thought of cave diving itself is horrifying to me, but doing that while also being stalked by an eldritch horror seemed too good to miss out on. Even I still don't know what's down there...

Also, I love the dynamic between the protagonists from DAY 6. My sweet boy just wanted to be free and meet new people 😔 At some points I wrote him to be a little too self-loathing, kinda giving him incel vibes... He's not like that, I swear, just very frustrated with himself.

Lastly, DAY 15 was one of the first ideas I had for Febuwhump. Pet whump/BBU is something I avoided for some time, and it took a while to warm up to it, but the basic concept is not that different from any other whump storyline, I guess. I just hope Daniel got his ass handed to him afterward 👀

🏆 The ones that took the longest

Everything regarding Elliot and Morris (beginning with DAY 8) but especially DAY 20. I sat a whole weekend on that thing, meaning that the other prompts got pushed back and were stuck in my mind during the weekdays. But in the end, it all worked out. I had to take the time, because it is the most important piece to show Elliot's and Morris´ relationship. The writing still takes up the lion's share of the work, but I used to underestimate translating and editing the whole text, whoops.

Also, DAY 6 again. I had to google a lot of cocktails and cities for that one 🥃 Cheers!

🏆 The ones that took the shortest

DAY 15, surprisingly, wrote itself in one sitting. I guess yandere Whumper is my natural modus operandi.

Day 28 was also very quick, just took like four hours with editing. I searched through my bathroom to figure out what Whumpee would use in their daily routine 😬

Last but not least, my lovely shitpost on DAY 5, the woodburning one. I still stand by it, that shit hurts and makes a great torture device. Downside: you'll probably need an extension cord.

It's kind of selfish too, I just have a lot of conflicting feelings when it comes to their situation and choice to handle it. Hi! c: Relevant heads up:

I'll be prioritizing threads with some sort of established plot to them (with definite beginning, an assertive middle and a probable end — I'll get to what it means on some paragraph ahead). It means that I'll first tackle those which can spawn a more robust storyline rather than the “lighter” ones.

I don't dislike quick-paced, silly threads, and I'm a major shitposter, but I'm starting to feel like I'm going nowhere with my muse and that kind of rains on my parade.

As of now, I owe a few things that fit that box perfectly, and other storylines being discussed with certain RP partners behind the scenes, so I’m off to a start I can manage.

However! If anyone else is interested in diving a bit deeper with me (maybe poke our muses’ wounds together), just let me know and I’ll hit you up through DMs.

As for what I meant on the first paragraph, read below the cut.

Structuring where we want to go with an idea is so sexy. I’ll be available to work out:

1) A central idea we can build on, literally our starting point;

2) How the middle of it may go. Changes are expected as we write and deepen the narrative but we keep a “spine” to it;

3) A possible end. More than the middle, changes are almost certain to happen until we get to this point, but we throw around possible outcomes given what we first decided to do. This is specially important and boils down to knowing if we will be able to address the events again in a future thread (it can also be a one-time thing only, too. TLDR; Help me with advice on life after graduation and doing things to improve my resume (designing a personal website, encouragement, certification courses advice etc.)

Long rant ahead.

Hi guys,

So this is the first time I’m posting here and I’m looking for some advice from the community I’m most interactive with (you guys). This is a real life advice request from you guys so feel free so don’t feel obligated to help me out if you think you can’t for whatever reason.

After many years of struggling with university, I’m finally going to graduate after this summer. Yay! For reference, I’m a maths and economics major at a top university in Canada.

However, my grades are not so good overall because I felt an incredible pressure (and guilt from underperforming my expectations) during my first three years at university. Ultimately, I got severely depressed at the end of third year and got placed on academic suspension for a year at the end of the my ‘third’ year. Then, I came back after that year off and worked really hard but only performed about average in comparison to the rest of my cohort for the last two years (had to redo many courses from that failed third year 😅).

Now, I’m on the brink of graduating but I don’t have any relevant job experience in my field (finance) and no job experience since 2019 (before Covid). The market is cooling down for now and I’m not sure how the economy in North America/ Worldwide is going to be in the next few months.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I don’t know how I will be able to find a job in my sector given all of this since jobs are so competitive. I’m eventually looking to get in the investment banking sector (get that 💰 lmao).

So my plan is that I’m going to beef up my resume by doing some certification courses such as the CFA, Bloomberg Market Concepts, Bloomberg ESG, possibly a course in Python (PECP) and some other courses on LinkedIn on Excel (particularly VBA in Excel). I’m also going to make a personal website using Wordpress where I will try to not shitpost as often (ahem 😳). Among all of these, the biggest challenges are the CFA (which has 3 levels and takes 3 years to fully complete) and the time management of it all. Even finishing Level 1 in the CFA should give me a slight edge compared to other starter people in the industry.

The timeline I’ve decided on is based until November (I have the funds to support myself until December). It’s going to be hard, but ultimately (if many things right) it should be worth it.

Here are the main questions I have-

When do I seriously start applying for jobs? (1st round a month ago went miserably)

Am I possibly taking on too much?

If I finish all of this in record time (6 months), am I going to be competitive for these kinds of jobs?

Is all this work worth it? (Don’t give me politically correct advice/ No b.s.)

How do I get some relevant industry job/work experience asap?

Can someone advice me on how to build a personal website (design aspects)? How much personality to show? How do I make myself come across as a well balanced person with interests which are strategically aligned with finance a little bit? Do I include other interests such as literature and stuff? I’m obviously going to include all my research papers on it as well so should I include research papers I’ve done in courses other than maths and economics?

Sorry for the extra long rant. Any advice or support will be helpful at this point. Frankly speaking, I know this is a lot to ask from strangers on the internet but at least I’m not asking on Reddit 😅😂.

This may sound weird but who is your favorite ancient philosopher? It is a great deal the study of philosophy in your country? considering that you influenced a lot in the field. In my opinion Diogenes was ahead of his time, he would've been a great shitposter on Twitter or Tumblr lol

Heyy! This gives me a great opportunity to speak in general about philosophy and our history, so bear with me!

To be perfectly honest with you I will have to Google the philosophers again, and most Greeks would have done the same 😋 I can vaguely say... Plato? But I don't remember 100% everything he's ever spoken about.

The overwhelming majority of Greeks doesn't have "a favorite ancient philosopher" info lying around in their heads because the antiquity has been a veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery distant part of our history and we are not nearly as obsessed with it as the rest of the (mostly western) world. (We give great importance to our antiquity but...ya know 😋 )

That doesn't mean we haven't heard of the philosophers in our daily lives or at school, but our history is vast and we have to remember many details. I won't undermine the philosophy of the time but things happening 2.000+ years ago are not that relevant in contrast to the most recent events in our country. We continued having great and famous philosophers in the Christian years, they were just not studied enough by the foreigners in the last centuries to become famous worldwide. (Or even in Greece).

There have been more recent Greek philosophers and spiritual people that have influenced Greeks' minds a lot, and they make Aristotle look like "old news". Not necessarily in greatness or timelessness, but in the sense we have moved on intellectually.

It's good to know the ancient famous names but we don't have the time to focus deeply only on one part of our history as foreigners do. Some foreigners might wonder why we don't give as much importance to the philosophers "as we should" but they only have to learn about antiquity, and mostly the classical times.

We must learn our whole history of 3000 years and the classical antiquity is just some paragraphs to us compared to everything we must know. So, naturally, Greeks chose their favourite periods and what they want to remember. They don't have the obligation to remember things in detail about that long ago, just because foreigners think they should.

Our recent history is more of "use" to us and closer to our daily lives, and proof of that is the historical novels in Greece that are mostly about the last century. That happens in most countries, I think. Ancient events and people are cool but we don't have the need to be that invested in them because we have hundreds of other important historical things in our minds from the more recent centuries.

I mean if I am not even interested in philosophy, why would I keep the words of ancient philosophers in my mind and not devote this energy to learning about 1821 (slavery, heroism, wars), the creation of the Greek statr, ww1, the civil war, ww2, the Balkan wars, the genocide, the Lausanne treaty, the Junta, the Cyprus occupation, and everything else that my recent ancestors had to go through and still have left some trauma in my family?

Generally speaking, Philosophy is not considered very beneficial to us in a practical matter. Greeks hold philosophy in high regard but a philosophy degree doesn't guarantee a stable financial future compared to other branches, so these studies are usually frowned upon.

Again, I don't insinuate we shouldn't admire the ancient philosophers or philosophy in general! I just wanted to give a more realistic approach to this question and speak about the majority, from what I've observed in the country.

i love, love, love taking care of animals so much. i have nine cats in total (all of them are rescued from accidents or i picked them up in the streets), two dogs, five birds and a family of ducks.

back when i was a child, i used to practice different kinds of martial arts because my family specialised in them. I learned how to play kyūdo (japanese archery), and kendo (japanese swordsmanship) from my father. its been years since i practiced kung fu and muay thai so i don't know if i still can do them well 😂🔫

i've said above that i'm very vocal about my political stance, but my favourite part is writing them as the school newspaper articles 😂💦 i've never had any experience in creative writing before (this writing blog is my first ever 🤔) so forgive me if my writing feels so stiff and empty sometimes! Old habits die hard, as they say.

i'm not a very religious person (but i'm a buddhist btw!) but i don't mind hearing about other religions, too. just make sure you aren't forcing your values to others, were good!

i love playing a lot of otome games, either in my nintendo switch or mobile or online, my favourite set involves: the ikemen series (ikesen, ikevam, ikerev, ikegen, ikelive and ikepri), piofiore no banshou, collar x malice, tears of themis, obey me!, mlqc, msyme and more!

i also love rhythmic and adventure games like twisted wonderland, mahoutsukai no yakusoku, genshin impact, touken ranbu, kingdom hearts, onmyoji and final fantasy.

unlike most japanese, i'm not very fond of watching anime now sjshs though I used to really like detective conan and other fantasy anime back in middle school.

my oshis have one similar characteristic: the ones with shady and questionable personalities. and wearing glasses, and perhaps with white hair. (eg. jade leech, floyd leech, azul ashengrotto, trey clover, xiao, tartaglia, zhongli, vyn richter, akechi mitsuhide, nokto klein, yang, lucien, barbatos, etc.) the only excemptions for this are zhongli, xiao, venti and xingqiu lol

my hogwarts house is currently ravenclaw and i get sorted in either diasomnia or ignihyde a lot.

my childhood dream is to become an accountant but now, i wanted to be a successful lawyer :D
