So apparently I hate myself.
I learned that there is a Gold Mario you can unlock on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe by receiving a gold trophy in all the 12 base cups at 200cc.
Now, my happy ass, having not achieved a golden trophy in 150cc decides "sounds like fun! I'm sure this couldn't possibly make me feel a disproportionate amount of rage to funi pixel car racing game!"
It can. Very much so.
To prove my point I'm firing up the notes app and cataloging my thoughts as I play each of these cups. Here ya go, cup 1 (also it starts off weird but only because i started after clearing attenpt 1):
Cup 1 (Mushroom)
• If you're in first no you're not
• HOW TF DID I GO FROM FIRST TO 8TH IN LIKE 2 SECONDS BULLSHIT
• God the lakitu's applause is such condescending bullshit
• 1 POINT AWAK FROM RANK.3
• racing on 200cc will end more relationships than uno
• Fuck you Shy Guy you stole first place AT THE LAST SECOND
• If someone tells you to touch grass just set them on Mario Circuit for 200cc
• Hope ya like WALLS
• No seriously do they have magnets
• WATER PARK 1ST PLACE LETS GOOOOOOO
• Oh to be naive and like Sweet Sweet Canyon
• Protip, use mushrooms on the terrain patches
• not like it matters because PEACH AND SHY GUY ARE SPAWNS OF SATAN
• I remember when Thwomp Ruins was my map. Oh to be young.
• Tbf there is like one section of grass I use as a shortcut that kiiiiiinda helps?
• Of course it only works if you don't go off the edge before the glider section
• HA dumb bitch
• Holy shit there's distance between me and the CPUs? Damn God likes me for once
• Final lap DONT FUCK IT UP MARIO
• AND YA DIDNT FUCK IT UP HOORAH FOR JUMPMAN
• ig DONT GO FOR THE BLOCKS on the path right before the glider section on thwomp ruins if you wanna win on 200cc
• YESSSSS GOLD TROPHY 1 DOWN, 11 MORE TO GO
Attempts: 2

Booster Course Pass Wave 4 is dropping tomorrow seemingly and wanted to detail some thoughts here because easier than twitter:
Ninja Hideaway is i think still the standout track from this DLC, it’s the most unique track by far and offers a challenge not present in any other track in the game, I could 100% see this track not being for everyone as it features some pretty harsh turns (the one after the raising platforms is probably the most infamous) but i can really enjoy anything new that feels intentionally difficult instead of accidentally, the track’s biggest weakness is being an early wave track so visually the Tour visual plastic-ness kinda effects the track unfortunately as i imagine it could’ve been an absolutely gorgeous track with 8′s base game art style
Ironically despite what I just said i think on the whole the tracks coming from Tour as originals (The City and Nitro tracks) tend to feel a bit weaker than tracks based on old tracks. New York Minute is the strongest of the city tracks to me having the best blend of the different path gimmicks while having paths that aren’t really awkward and confusing. the mini map not updating upon a lap change genuinely knocks these tracks down a full tier usually. On top of that I tend to just not love the visual direction and atmosphere of these tracks and the fact there’s so many of them (up to 3 per wave) can sometimes feel a bit much, even if I understand why that is, wanting to preserve the Tour courses. Fortunately the City tracks that have yet to be added to 8 Deluxe are among the better ones and i’m looking forward to it!
On the topic of Tour tracks: Sky High Sundae is maybe the worst track in all of Mario Kart 8 and i’m not even joking. It’s the 3rd “perfect oval” track in the game is easily the weakest. Baby Park’s simple circle design is enclosed to heavily push crazy interactions with items and other players creating a chaotic atmosphere and Excitebike has some decent shortcuts and trick ramps on top of a randomized gimmick. Sky High sundae is just boring, the anti-grav gimmick feels really pasted on to have anything on the track but ironically makes it feel a lot slower than it actually should. Finally it’s just kinda ugly? it looks like a roblox world with free models plastered everywhere. On the whole a waste of a fun theme
3DS Toad Circuit sucks too but like in a funny way. Your friends will get mad at you if you pick it in call which is funny
The 3 biggest “downgrades” from the original tracks to me include Maple Treeway, which while is still solid, i think changed a few things and includes a few things from the 7 version i don’t love, the glider section is not as fun and dynamic as the wii version, I also think Wii’s version has the far better palette and atmosphere, but that’s nerd shit only I care about LOL. Wii Coconut Mall feels kinda butchered in general, it looks ugly and makes changes that overall dampen the track, the Cars spin at the end now but the section where they moved back and forth with boosts in front of them was a very intentionally designed challenge where as the current spinning cars feels really uninspired. Finally Sky Garden feels like it lacks the color choices and design of the original and dampens the layout to an overall boring track
GBA Snow Land is the big surprise of the pass to me, It’s deceivingly simple but the layout is incredibly fun and encourages fun short cuts and mushroom usage which is always a lot of fun to interact with, it’s also one of the far better looking tracks in the booster pass
I’ll get flack for this but I think 3DS rainbow road is a bit overrated. maybe that’s not the right word but I think it lacks what i tend to like about rainbow road which is a real sense of challenge. 3DS rainbow road is really. easy? am i the only who feels that way haha. For as much flack as 8′s new rainbow road gets, it’s a track that offers a substantial challenge with lots of tough turns and places to fall off. I also think 8′s version of n64 rainbow road(a track that i think sucks in the original) is a better “easy” rainbow road, looking more visually exciting and feeling intentionally designed to be a victory lap of sorts
final thing, what in the world is up with the grass textures in this DLC, they seem to swap between a grass akin to the base game and this weird ugly plastic bright lime green. Rock Rock Mountain suffers the worst from this. actively looking worse than the 3DS original to me, feeling less like a drive around a mountain side and feeling more like i’m in a playset
Tumblr media Tumblr media
overall I think the booster course pass started really really rough and while I think it still hasn’t reached base game’s quality it has gotten way better and wave 4 is looking to be the highest quality wave yet

Mario Kart DLC (Waves 1-3) Ranked
Tumblr media
as with any list, there's some you might disagree with. here's my thoughts & opinions on every track.
F TIER:
Tumblr media
Toad Circuit: I HATE THIS. it's so mind-numbingly dull. why did they want to include this???? out of all the tracks they could've chosen, why was it necessary to include toad circuit????
D TIER:
Tumblr media
Choco Mountain: visually dull, just miles and miles of brown. another bland track that's slightly less bland than Toad Circuit.
Tumblr media
Tokyo Blur: disappointing city circuit. when i think of Tokyo, i think of small, narrow, busy streets not wide, open highways. you barely see or engage with any of the landmarks. the track itself is unremarkable. hardly any obstacles and a tiny bit of gliding. you'd think for a japanese company they'd put extra effort into highlighting their country.
Tumblr media
Mario Circuit 3: some might call this F tier. no distinguishing features, ugly generic design, no gliding, no anti gravity, you just drive. weirdly i have a soft spot for it. the more i play it online, the more i like it. it’s so driver focused, the curves flow nicely. it's kinda refreshing to just focus on cornering.
Tumblr media
London Loop: how can a city so interesting in real life feel so unremarkable in this game??? the DLC introduced an interesting twist to some tracks. normally you have a circuit (like Mario Kart Stadium) or one long track (like Mount Wario). London Loop has a hybrid system where parts of the track close and newer parts open with each lap. done well, it adds a ton of variety. done bad, it confuses the player and they run out of bounds on what used to be drivable. London Loop (and to a lesser extent, Paris) is guilty of the later.
C TIER (average/ok/fine):
Tumblr media
Shroom Ridge: i prefer this to Toad's Turnpike, the other traffic heavy circuit. it can be fun, but i barely think about this track. i wouldn’t say to my friends, “hey I’m dying to play shroom ridge”. this is a track you play because you're sick of playing your favourites.
Tumblr media
Boo Lake: underrated track, i almost had this in B tier. for a GBA remake, they really amped it up. it's mostly underwater, there's anti-gravity. it can get fast and chaotic pretty quick.
Tumblr media
New York Minute: i was hoping for more. they could've had gliding around the statue of liberty, anti gravity to drive up a skyscraper, there's so many possibilities with New York. it's not confusing or dull like London, but it doesn't have the glamour of Paris or Sydney. it's a middle of the road city circuit.
Tumblr media
Snow Land: a snow track i don't hate! that's the best i can say for it. apart from Mount Wario and DK Summit, snow tracks never fare well in any mario kart series.
Tumblr media
Sky Garden: kinda like a toned down Mushroom Gorge. nothing to hate, nothing to love. very inoffensive track.
B TIER:
Tumblr media
Paris Promenade: ideally, i'd want every city track to have this level of atmosphere. you drive under the Eiffel tower, around the Arc de Triomphe, the music slaps. it feels and looks like you're driving in Paris. that's what you want out of a city circuit.
Tumblr media
Ninja Hideaway: it's strong visually, the theming is on point. but i don't like the layout of the track. lots of sharp, narrow turns that don't flow naturally. reminds me of Piranha Plant Speedway with those sharp 90° turns that feel more frustrating than fun. having said that, difficulty can be engaging to overcome so for that it's B tier.
Tumblr media
Merry Mountain: this was a real highlight when it first came out. playing this at Christmas with family felt so appropriate. having played this dozens of times now, the novelty has worn off and what you're left with is a track that's not as exciting as the visuals make it out to be.
Tumblr media
Berlin Byways: i wasn't expecting much from Berlin Byways, but i was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out. lots of variety in this track and they manage to cram in a ton of landmarks. special shoutout to the whomps that form the Berlin Wall.
Tumblr media
Peach Gardens: i'm noticing a lot of Wave 3 tracks in B tier. the consensus is wave 3's the best wave so far, but even so i wonder how much recency bias is playing into this. i like how big and sprawling the track is. there's so many ways to navigate this track, it's hard to figure out what a speedrun of this would look like. one of the downsides is it suffers from the London Loop navigation problems. a couple of times you're going uphill and not sure whether the track's turning left or right. despite that, it's a welcome addition to mario kart 8.
A TIER:
Tumblr media
Kalimari Desert:
iconic N64 track. i like the updates to the original like how you drive through the tunnel. this would be lower on the list if this was a straight remake.
Tumblr media
Mushroom Gorge:
the ultimate bouncing mushroom track. it's short, it's fun, it's challenging. not much to comment on really.
Tumblr media
Sky High Sundae: Excitebike Arena meets Sweet Sweet Canyon. i love Sky High Sundae. it's controversial, some people have this in D tier. i like mario kart tracks where you're constantly engaged with the track. you're not just driving in a straight line, every few seconds you've got to make sure you're doing flips to maximise boost. i like the narrowness of the track and the sheer cliffs that really heighten the stakes. in Excitebike Arena, you get shelled on a ramp you just drive off, in Sky High Sundae if you get shelled on a ramp you could fall off the map. it's so thrilling and so satisfying when you nail the jumps and knock an opponent off the track.
Tumblr media
Rock Rock Mountain: great choice for the DLC. i love how epic this feels. the long gliding section, the sheer scale of the mountain near the end and the boulders that crash down. i always look forward to playing it.
S TIER:
Tumblr media
Coconut Mall: it's coconut mall. what else needs to be said?
Tumblr media
Waluigi Pinball: one of the all-time greatest tracks. unique concept, visually stunning. full of fun obstacles, tricks and turns. this is was makes mario kart one of the greatest racing games ever made. the endless possibilities with designing these tracks. "hey why don't we race inside a pinball machine?" you'll never get ideas like that in a gran turismo or forza game.
Tumblr media
Sydney Sprint: there's definitely bias here, but this is my favourite city track so far. nailed the theme, the music slaps, and great implementation of changing parts of the track each lap. there isn't a ton of obstacles, but there's a ton of variety. you drive through the opera house and do jumps off the harbour bridge, what's not to like?
Tumblr media
Maple Treeway:
a Wii classic. another track where the narrowness is an interesting challenge and not a burden. ticks all the boxes of a great mario kart track.
Tumblr media
Rainbow Road 3DS: the BEST rainbow road hands down. i'm just in awe of this track. visually stunning, full of tricks and surprises, and shows off the magic of space.
overall, i'm pretty happy with the DLC. some complain about the city circuits, some complain about the simplified aesthetics or retro track choices, and some are just waiting for Mario Kart 9. all i can say is i'm thrilled we're going to end up with 96 mario kart 8 deluxe tracks. this is cementing its legacy as the greatest mario kart yet.

Breaching budget cap an act of cheating Brown | RaceFans Round-up
In the round-up: McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has told the FIA that teams breaching the budget cap “constitutes cheating” as the sport’s governing body considers its response to Red Bull and Aston Martin’s infringements. In brief Breaching budget cap an act of “cheating” – Brown F1 teams breaching the budget cap “constitutes cheating”, Brown told the FIA in a letter to the governing body on the day the breaches were confirmed last week. The letter, reported by the BBC, argued any team that was found to have exceeded the financial restrictions should face a reduced cost cap for the following season and reductions in aerodynamic testing. However Brown pushed for more than just financial sanctions. “We don’t feel a financial penalty alone would be a suitable penalty for an overspend breach or a serious procedural breach,” he said. “There clearly needs to be a sporting penalty in these instances, as determined by the FIA. “We suggest that the overspend should be penalised by way of a reduction to the team’s cost cap in the year following the ruling, and the penalty should be equal to the overspend plus a further fine – i.e. an overspend of $2m in 2021, which is identified in 2022, would result in a $4m deduction in 2023 ($2m to offset the overspend plus $2m fine). “In addition, we believe there should be minor overspend sporting penalties of a 20% reduction in CFD and wind tunnel time. These should be enforced in the following year, to mitigate against the unfair advantage the team has and will continue to benefit from.” Final COTA corner named in honour of Mario Andretti Andretti was first to drive the COTA track The Circuit of the Americas has announced that its final corner will be officially renamed as “The Andretti” in honour of 1978 F1 world champion Mario Andretti. The left-hander turn 20 completes the circuit, leading onto the pit straight at the end of the lap. As well as his F1 title and 12 grand prix victories, Andretti won the 1969 Indianapolis 500 and four IndyCar championships, as well as winning the 1967 Daytona 500 and taking second place in the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours. Andretti was the first driver to ever run a lap of the completed COTA circuit in 2012. A dedication ceremony will be held at the corner on Thursday ahead of Friday’s opening day of practice for the United States Grand Prix. Browning crowned GB3 champion Hitech driver Luke Browning was crowned GB3 champion after securing second place in the penultimate race of the season at Donington Park. Browning finished behind Tom Lebbon in a damp race at Donington Park to seal the title with one race to spare. He finished the season 46.5 points ahead of Joel Granfors, with Lebbon almost 100 points further back in third. It is Browning’s second junior single-seater title after he won the 2020 British F4 championship. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pack Wave 1 & 2 - My Review!
I wanted to post a review of Wave 2, but then realised I never posted 1, so here’s both!
This DLC has been quite a mixed bag so far. Some courses are actually pretty great, and others are quite dull. And visually, some of them look like they had more effort put into them than others.
One last thing before I get into the track by track review. I just thought I’d mention that I definitely found Wave 2 to be much stronger than wave 1 overall.
Anyway, keep reading for the full review!
Gold Mushroom Cup
Paris Promenade: Boring and flat. Looks a bit pretty I guess. 2/10
Toad Circuit: Not too bad, though the inflatable toads definitely could’ve had a little bit of a higher poly count, lol. 4/10
Choco Mountain: Actually enjoyed this. The little touch ups they did make to the Mario Kart Tour style graphics were actually enough for me. It looked nice. 7/10
Coconut Mall: The visual style of the tour version of coconut mall didn’t capture the nostalgia of the original version at all. It’s still a decent course to play, but just knowing what it could’ve been, it was disappointing tbh. On another, less subjective note, the scale felt a little weird. It somehow felt smaller and shorter than the Wii version, which is odd. Music still slaps. 6/10
Cat Bell Cup
Tokyo Blur: Also quite flat, as to be expected with Tour courses, though I found the alternate routes in this one a bit more interesting… still pretty dull. 3/10
Shroom Ridge: Not bad. Very basic. And I will use this course to address the “bad graphics” everyone keeps talking about. Going from a base game course to these DLC courses definitely does give me a bit of whiplash, though I’d say that more for some courses than others. I liked the aesthetic of Choco Mountain, for example. I think they added just enough texture for it to fit in enough. This course, however? I can truthfully say that the flat, texture-less grass absolutely does bother me. But I will also say, if they had made the courses more interesting - added anti gravity sections and all that good stuff - I would most definitely care about the change in aesthetic a bit less. It is disappointing, and I’m already just looking forward to the DLCs being over so we can start speculating about the next Mario Kart game again. Rant over. Shroom Ridge? 2/10
Sky Garden: Actually very pleasant. Would’ve liked to see some anti-gravity added, but pretty nice otherwise. Visually nice too. The lack of animation on the completely stiff shortcut leaves is a bit jarring. But yeah, I kinda liked this one. 5/10
Ninja Hideaway: Actually pretty cool! Visually it could’ve just used some extra texture here and there, and the pink trees look pretty bad. My only complaint about the actual track though is that it feels quite compact and a little claustrophobic. Overall though, cool course. 5/10
Turnip Cup
New York Minute: Kinda fun aesthetic, a few interesting twists and turns. As I’ll be saying a lot though, quite flat for most of it. Could be worse though. 3/10
Mario Circuit: faithful recreation of the original track… probably? I don’t actually know or care, boring and flat, 1/10
Kalimari Desert: liked the little surprise of going on the train tracks on lap two. Not the most interesting course, but better than the other two. 5/10
Waluigi Pinball: It’s Waluigi Pinball, what else can I say? 7/10
Propeller Mushroom Cup
Sydney Sprint: One of the first Tour courses I’ve actually quite enjoyed! (And I’m not just biased because I live there!) One complaint though: why the actual f*ck was the audience in the Opera House flat, animated textures?!?! They had 3D people cheering literally at other parts of the same course!!! However, unlike that audience, this track was solid. 7.5/10
Snow Land: Aesthetically, this course was surprisingly nice! The course was fairly basic, but the only thing that did irritate me a bit was the hole in the ice you can fall through. Playing this for the first time, I assumed maybe they had a little underwater alternate route, because Mario Kart 8 lets you drive underwater. Overall nice though. 5.5/10
Mushroom Gorge: Top tier course. Favourite DLC Course so far. Didn’t feel like it needed added anti-gravity, and the new version of the big mushroom section is really cool. I was worried that having all three of those routes might over-complicate it, but it absolutely didn’t. Best DLC Course yet! 8/10
Sky-High Sundae: Good course! The hype died down a little after the first lap, since it seemed a bit short, and the way you kinda float up those stairs looked a little odd. Overall though, solid track! 7/10
If you actually read all this…

Navarone
Tumblr media
You pilot a ship destroying 2 of 3 things from a top-down perspective. There are dots, bombs and shooters. It was one of the first arcade shooters that could not only move you from left-to-right but could also move you top-to-bottom. It was featured in the latest Namco Museum collection

In RoadBlasters, the player must navigate an armed sports car through 50 different rally races, getting to the finish line before running out of fuel. The objective is to complete all 50 rallies without running out of fuel. The player's car has two fuel tanks, a main tank and a smaller reserve. If the main tank runs empty at any time, the car begins to use its reserve. In a review of the Lynx version, Robert A. Jung concluded, "This is a mind-blowing awesome adaptation. I'd recommend it to most video-game players -- fans of driving games, fans of shooting games, fans of action games, and fans of the arcade original.
Super Sprint

Fighting
Mortal Kombat 2

The game's plot continues from the first game, featuring the next Mortal Kombat tournament set in the otherdimensional realm of Outworld, with the Outworld and Earthrealm representatives fighting each other on their way to challenge the evil emperor Shao Kahn. The gameplay system of Mortal Kombat II is an improved version of that from the original Mortal Kombat. There are several changes in standard moves: a crouching punch was added, low and high kicks have greater differentiation , roundhouse kicks are made more powerful , and it is easier to perform combos due to reduced recovery times for attacks. MK2 was the pinnacle of fighting games at the time, it was the last great 2D fighting game.

Upon release, Computer and Video Games magazine called it "arguably the greatest 2D fighting game ever" made. The King of Fighters '95 was awarded Best Neo-Geo Game of 1995 by Electronic Gaming Monthly in 1996.
Holosseum
Tumblr media
Holosseum plays similarly to other 2D versus fighting games during its release, which the player's character fights against his or her opponent in best two-out-of-three matches in a single player tournament mode with the computer or against another human player. Armored Warriors
Tumblr media
Armored Warriors , is a 1994 mecha-themed beat-em-up game released by Capcom as a coin-operated video game for their CP System II hardware. The game's most prominent feature is its multi-player option, and the ability to augment the players' mechs with a large array of different parts for varied attacks.[3] Multiple regions of the mech could be switched, including the arms, legs and handheld weaponry. Such parts were gained (or lost) by inflicting damage upon enemies, which would cause various parts to disembark and be wielded by the player.  In Japan, Game Machine listed Armored Warriors on their December 1, 1994 issue as being the sixth most-successful table arcade unit of the month. In 2023, Time Extension included the game on their top 25 "Best Beat 'Em Ups of All Time" list.
Alien vs. Predator
Tumblr media
Alien Vs Predator is a 1994 beat 'em up video game developed and released by Capcom for the CPS-2 arcade game system. It is based on the science fiction franchise of the same name. Introducing an original fighter to the game: Lt. Kurosawa, the players take control of up to three from the selection of four cyborgs and Predator characters in a battle against the Alien hordes and rogue human soldiers. Alien vs. Predator uses a control setup with an eight-directional joystick and three buttons: one to attack, one to jump, and one to shoot. The default cabinet for the game allows as many as three players to play simultaneously, although some smaller cabinets only accommodate two players. Alien vs. Predator has been very well received by critics. In Japan, Game Machine listed the game on their July 15, 1994 issue as being the third most-successful table arcade unit of the month, outperforming titles like Fantastic Journey and Puyo Puyo.

Whac a mole
Tumblr media
Whac-a-Mole is an arcade game. It was created in 1975 by the amusements manufacturer TOGO in Japan. A typical Whac-A-Mole machine consists of a waist-level cabinet with a play area and display screen, and a large, soft mallet. Five to eight holes in the play area top are filled with small, plastic, cartoonish moles, or other characters, which pop up at random. Points are scored by, as the name suggests, whacking each mole as it appears. The faster the reaction, the higher the score.
Dance Dance Revolution arcade machine
Tumblr media
Dance Dance Revolution is a music video game, developed by Konami, released in arcades on September 26, 1998, in Japan. The core game involves the player stepping their feet to correspond with the arrows that appear on the screen and the beat of the song playing. During normal gameplay, arrows scroll upwards from the bottom of the screen and pass over a set of stationary arrows near the top . When the scrolling arrows overlap the stationary ones, the player must step on the corresponding arrows on the dance platform, and the player has been given a judgment for their accuracy of every streaked note .
Air Hockey
Tumblr media
Air Hockey is a Pong-like table top sport where two opposing players try to score goals against each other on a low-friction table using two hand-held discs and a lightweight plastic puck. (60) Booster Course Pass Wave 5
Tumblr media
Solid selection of tracks. It’s not the best wave, but there are some good ones here.
Athens Dash was a lot of fun. It’s great that there’s a tour course that isn’t just a generic city.
Daisy Cruiser has always been one of my favorites. It's still great here. I love the new rendition of the music.
Moonview Highway is new to me since I never played Mario Kart Wii. It was great, but definitely the worst track in the cup. There have already been plenty of city tracks in the DLC and plenty more that have you avoiding oncoming traffic. I like how the music changes when you reach the city portion of the track.
Squeaky clean sprint is easily the best course in the entire wave. The idea of a race track taking place entirely in a bathroom is so stupid in the best way possible. I also wasn’t expecting just how fun it was to play.
Onto the next cup which starts with Los Angeles Laps. It’s fine. I like the part where you fly over the stadium but that’s about it. Nothing much else to say about this one.
Sunset Wilds is the biggest letdown of the wave. I’m so sad they didn’t keep the dynamic sunset from Super Circuit. It’s the only reason this track is memorable. Without it, it’s just a boring GBA course.
Koopa Cape got such a glow-up. I know Wii introduced the half pipes, but I never really got to try them out until the booster course pass brought them back. The half pipes really shine in this track. It’s so much fun to do tricks with them, especially in the underwater pipe section.
And Vancouver Velocity is the last track in the wave and it’s pretty okay. Not amazing. I've been honestly getting really tired of the tour tracks. I did like the ice rink section and the bridge area in the first lap.
Overall this wave was decent. Not the best one, but it had a few stand-out tracks.
