I want to see characters being taken care of in an explicit and worshipful way. Home-cooked meals. Hair brushed and braided by gentle hands. Little gifts just because.
I want to read about characters who are not used to kindness being bombarded by acts of service. This trope works romantically and platonically. Give me found family and acts of service - all the ways a character is wrapped up in wordless, explicit care after years of cruelty and having no idea how to handle. I need it.

till death
by darjeelinh (@darjeelinh)
M, 7k, Wangxian
Summary: Near death after destroying the Stygian Tiger Seal, Wei Wuxian has one last wish. He wishes to see Lan Zhan one last time. The universe grants him this final act of kindness. In the dead of night, Lan Wangji wakes up with a surprise visitor. Kay's comments: This was so soft and heartbreaking. Wei Wuxian, at the brink of death after the destruction of the Yin Tiger Tally, travels forward in time and gets to experience one day of him and Lan Wangji being married. My heart broke for both of them in this scenario, because Lan Wangji put the pieces together quickly and realized what was going on and Wei Wuxian thought for a long time that this was just a nice dream he dreamt. It also felt healing though. For both of them. Very soft, very strong on the hurt/comfort. Excerpt: At the same time, he also wants to pull Lan Wangji closer, to engulf himself in that embrace, to keep letting himself be held down by those strong arms. “I don’t know what’s going on,” he says, helplessly. Lan Wangji hums, fingers still massaging against his scalp, and it feels… nice. More than nice. Wei Wuxian wants to melt against that touch. He’s still so tired, the kind of weariness that eats into the bone. He cannot remember the last time someone has cared for him, has touched him so casually. He’s never had Lan Wangji touching him in this way. Or touching him, ever. “Was it another nightmare?” That low voice asks, calm like an anchor in the darkness. Wei Wuxian doesn’t have an answer, suddenly feeling disoriented. Was everything that happened before he woke up only a nightmare? The dying, the pain? But even then, how did he wake up like this? In bed, with Lan Wangji no less. And Lan Wangji didn’t even push him away. As if this is a common occurrence for him. Like it’s normal for them to wake up together. Apparently sensing his dissociation, Lan Wangji pulls back, tilts his chin up, and kisses him sweetly. Wei Wuxian’s mind blanks completely.
pov wei wuxian, pov lan wangji, canon divergence, canon compliant, time travel, yiling laozu wei wuxian, time travelling wei wuxian, crossing timelines, hurt/comfort, emotional hurt/comfort, angst with a happy ending, sad and sweet

Kiss it better

Lán Zhàn | Lán Wàngjī/Wèi Yīng | Wèi Wúxiàn 魔道祖师 - 墨香铜臭 | Módào Zǔshī - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù, 陈情令 | The Untamed (TV) Rating: M No Archive Warnings Apply Words: 11,081 Chapters: 6/6 On Ao3
Summary:
Five times Wei Wuxian asked Lan Wangji to kiss it better, and one time Lan Wangji asked Wei Wuxian.
~~~
It's not long after Lan Zhan's mother is gone; he's in Yiling with his uncle and his older brother to pick up some specific teas on their way to a conference in Yunmeng.
He's opted to stay outside, he doesn't want to stay in the crowded shop waiting for his uncle to discuss and sample all of the new teas while he speaks with the shop keepers. He wants to go home, he wants to see his mother.
He stands by the side of the building, out of the way of the door, the clusters of people shuffling through seemed unnapealing as he waits. After a while he hears a small shriek followed by a drumming of footsteps coming towards him from around the corner. After a moments deliberation he moves to the side to look for the source, they sounded scared after all, before immediately backing up again when a dark blur hurtles towards him. They continue past and throw themself under an empty stall a few meters away, small hand scrabbling out from under the wooden table top until it finds the edge of the cloth cover and pulls it snugly down.
Lan Zhan approaches the stall and waits a moment, but no further movement comes. He slowly lifts the edge of the cloth and finds... a boy, smaller than he is, much skinnier, and covered in filth from his face, to his clothes, to his bare feet, his parents will surely be upset with him later at bathing time. Big grey eyes blink at him for a moment before he's yanked under the stall with a yelp from the boy.
"Gege they will find you, quick!" The boy settles the cloth down again, and Lan Zhan notices blood on his arm as he moves. It's out of sight quickly when he turns away to place his ear to the cloth a moment before seeming satisfied, turning to Lan Zhan with a large grin.
"Look how much I got this time gege!" He picks up two lumps from the ground that Lan Zhan had assumed were rubbish. On closer inspection, one and a half dirt encrusted bao sit in his outstretched palms, he looks so proud of himself that Lan Zhan can't find the will to scold him for keeping food on the floor.
He realises the boy is waiting for a response, smile faltering slightly in the long silence, so he dips his head in aknowledgement with an 'mn'. This whole meeting is abrupt, Lan Zhan is still trying to find his bearings. Though the boy is speaking easily, as if picking up an earlier conversation, as if they are already friends.
"Would you like some gege?" Lan Zhan is perhaps too quick to shake his head in response, the prospect of eating dirt easy to reject, but the boy looks a bit sad at his refusal and he doesn't want him to be sad.
"A small piece." He concedes, and the boy lights up again, tearing open the full bao and examining it closely, pulling from the clean inside to offer to Lan Zhan.
take my heart and swallow it whole
For the @cdrama-action event, request_aquest on X or @deathbyoctopi
For prompt:
“XueXiao cute. They're in love, your honor!!”
The fire crackles merrily in the little home they’ve made for themselves in the funeral house. A-Qing sits a couple of feet away, playing intently with two stones on the ground, completely giving herself away. Xiao Xingchen sits opposite to him tending to the fire, as immaculate as ever even without washing away the grime of the day away. Meanwhile, Xue Yang is losing his mind.
The mastermind that is Xue Yang has been completely, irrevocably stumped by a blind, stuck-up cultivator who simply would not fall into his machinations. Xiao Xingchen, the man in question, just wouldn’t murder people accidentally. As a part of Xue Yang’s plan and all.
It started two weeks ago, when Xue Yang went into a quarter-life crisis about the lovey-dovey life that him, his enemy, and that little blind brat were leading. It didn’t come as a surprise to him that a year of a domestic, candy-filled lifestyle would bore him and vengeance would come back to him with, well, vengeance. One can say it started a year ago, when Xiao Xingchen saved him. One also can say it started half a decade ago, when they properly ran into each other for the first time. Maybe it all started the day he was born; maybe he was fated to be saved and destroyed this man. Gosh, the things a sweet life makes you think!
It went this way:
Xue Yang sat next to Xiao Xingchen on a sunny day, on the little stumps of wood they called chairs. He had only finished regaling his companion with the tragedy of his childhood (pain, suffering, etc.), and now sat lighter than he had ever in his lifetime. The birds were chirping, and the sun felt nice on his skin, in a way he hadn’t thought about before.
He was thinking of words to speak, when the thoughts of his life entered his mind and reminded him of why he hated this world. Immediately, his mood soured, and he remembered why destruction came the easiest to him. He’s been keeping corpse powder close to himself, ever since this new life began. The habits of a lifetime do not vacate one so easily.
“Daozhang, say, won’t you take me to a night-hunt?”
As he watched Xiao Xingchen think of words to say, his heart crowed in premature victory. It felt like pai—
“No.”
“No?”
“No.”
And thus, the dismantling of the genius and mastermind that is Xue Yang began.
--
The second time it went in a similar manner, although stunning Xue Yang in an entirely novel way.
“Daozhang! A walking corpse!” Xue Yang yelled, and ran to cow behind Xiao Xingchen. He had made sure to douse it in corpse powder and cut the man’s tongue out. Coincidentally, this was the man who always tried to scam Xiao Xingchen for his blindness. That had nothing to do with why Xue Yang chose him.
Xue Yang, from where he stood, could hear the hum of his sword activating and seeking a target. Perfect! However, Xiao Xingchen said: “It’s not hopping. It could be a person.”
Damn. So, Xiao Xingchen took him by the hand and dragged him back inside, ushering Xue Yang behind him. He stood protectively at the gate, sword out, back tense: a handsome saviour. Xue Yang, dazzled as he was, couldn’t summon his anger when the man he had disguised as a corpse realised what was best for him, and consequently turned to go back to his own house. Xiao Xingchen waited until his footsteps faded, and turned to Xue Yang standing at his back.
“Didi,” he said, and smiled, “you worry too much”. His dimples were showing.
Xue Yang started hyperventilating; no one had ever called him that before. Two hands reached out for his cheeks, and pulled them apart. Xue Yang stood there, and let himself be handled like a sweet rice cake. He forgets all about corpses and power and revenge. He spends the rest of the day in a daze, touching his cheeks where no one could see (i.e. everywhere). No one had ever done that to him before.
--
The next part of the plan required a bit of acting; not that Xue Yang wasn’t up to it. They had just returned from buying their weekly vegetables (Xiao Xingchen did the buying while Xue Yang took the old woman to a shady alleyway and doused her in corpse powder). Xiao Xingchen stood around the gate of their humble establishment, while Xue Yang pretended to go and relieve himself. Instead of peeing, Xue Yang dragged the woman to the empty area in front of his cultivator friend, and shook her by her shoulders, trying to make as much noise as possible. Xiao Xingchen perked up at the sounds of a scuffle. Too lazy to drag another person as a prop, Xue Yang yelled:
“Walking corpse! It’s attacking him!”
Xiao Xingchen gripped the handle of his sword; the look of alertness on his face is what convinced Xue Yang that this might work. The next moment, however, the he turned and walked straight inside.
What?
In a last-ditch effort, he dragged the little blind brat, who was also just standing around (really, do they have nothing to do?), to the not-corpse and yelled again:
“It’s attacking… A-Qiu. A-Qing! A-Qing! It’s attacking A-Qing!”
A-Qing, as suspected, looks at the not-corpse and starts running, leaving behind the cane and looking straight ahead with wide eyes. Today is the day for surprises.
Xue Yang stood there confusedly until Xiao Xingchen came back out with a jar of vinegar, which he unceremoniously dumped on the corpse and A-Qing. Xue Yang hurriedly gets out of the way, and watched as Xiao Xingchen subtly puffed himself out in a way only he can, as if he’s done something reasonable and noble and not just fucking insane.
“Solved! Now let’s go tell everyone!”
Xue Yang groaned. He follows Xiao Xingchen anyway.
--
After going round town and telling every single person to throw vinegar at corpses, Xue Yang is defeated and deflated; now he can’t just wait for the corpse poisoning to work. Damn Xiao Xingchen and his inability to jump to sword-fighting at slightest inconvenience. The time Xue Yang had spent with the Jins had convincingly taught him otherwise.
The people had been pissing themselves at the sight of Xue Yang standing menacingly outside of their door, but he found them reaching for vinegar and sticky rice anyways. He even found his first victim, the Annoying Vegetable Dude, sticking upside down out of a ditch smelling of vinegar on their way back. It was confusing, since its not like Xue Yang made him blind.
Anyway, that’s what happened. The whole unabridged version. Now, they are sitting by the fire, as is their communal post-dinner ritual (it made Xue Yang so mad. They had schedules now). Xue Yang is trying and failing to seethe, and simultaneously losing his mind. Throughout their time in this .excitingly creepy village, Xue Yang had only spoken words that came the hardest to him, to make sure he doesn’t oust himself. Now, however, words tumble out of his mouth.
“Why didn’t you stab the corpse? I heard your sword humming.”
“You have a keen ear, didi,” says Xiao Xingchen. “I… don’t believe in using my sword when I cannot even look at my enemy.” His cheeks shine in the firelight. “Even while my sword tells me things, it is better to simply find other ways; not because I don’t trust it or you, but because I trust myself enough to be better.”
 How very noble. Xue Yang couldn’t bring himself to hate him for it.
--
In a last-ditch effort, he throws corpse powder at the Annoying Vegetable Dude again and drags him to where Xiao Xingchen is standing around, again waiting on Xue Yang to relieve himself. Really, he needs better excuses.
“Daozhang! A walking corpse!” Xue Yang screams while running, for effect.
“There are way too many of those around these days. Come here, didi.”
Xue Yang pointedly starts running away from him.
“Nooooooo! Daozhang! It is coming after me!” It is not; the Annoying Vegetable Dude simply stands there as if he’s a part of the world’s most boring theatre show.
Xue Yang is halted in his pretend-headless-chickening by having his hand grabbed and being unceremoniously yanked towards the funeral house. Apparently, while Xue Yang was out performing his best, Xiao Xingchen had crossed over to him. He hadn’t even lost his breath. It was unfair how unruffled he was.
Once inside, Xiao Xingchen turns to Xue Yang and whispers in his ears, “Hold your breath, didi.” His voice is low and rough, and Xue Yang feels a strange urge to melt into the ground. “Let’s hide.”
They crouch behind a wheelbarrow, crunched together due to the lack of space. Xiao Xingchen is still holding his hand, warm and tight, from where he sits next to him. Xue Yang whimpers, which prompts Xiao Xingchen to turn towards him and hum. “Don’t be scared,” he says, seriously misunderstanding Xue Yang’s problem with the whole situation, and leans impossibly close, “if it really comes to bother you, I’ll kill it.”
Xue Yang feels he has died and come back. He can’t even feel happy about the fact he can carry out his evil mastermind plan; in that moment, he gives up on all the ways he could torture Xiao Xingchen if only he would call him “didi” and whisper in his ear. His head is frighteningly empty, and as they sit together and wait for the Annoying Vegetable Dude to wander off again, he starts whispering.
For once, his stories come the easiest to him. And like always, Xiao Xingchen turns towards him to listen, like a flower blooming in the sun.
Time for a particularly indulgent "Things I Will Probably Never Write" mixing emotional whump with magic curses and based on a combo of The Snow Queen and the elder dragon Jormag from Guild Wars 2.
Post-Sunshot, Nie Huaisang is not doing well. His brother is being more ruthless about his lack of training, the sect is cutting him less slack because he's now considered especially embarrassing in the wake of the war, the man he loves was (seemingly?) only ever pretending to love him back out of obligation and has now found someone better(?) (note: I haven't actually decided what's going on on that front, so kind of handwaving that for now?), and even the very few friends he thought he'd made actually see him at best as a joke to laugh at, not a friend to laugh with. (for further reference for this whole paragraph, see this post, but it's not totally necessary.)
He tells himself that he doesn't care, that other people's opinions don't matter as long as he's enjoying himself, but the more those opinions start to eat at him, the less he's able to enjoy himself.
So he starts trying to fix things, starts cutting away the parts of himself that people find stupid and annoying and frivolous. He sells the tame birds and restricts himself to only rehab and release. He gets rid of the spring books. He sells off all his art and stops making any more. He packs away his fans and stops openly carrying any, and simplifies his wardrobe. He cuts down on drink and food and stops 'wasting' money on snacks.
He even (ugh) stops putting up a fight when his brother drags him out to the training grounds.
But none of this seems to change anything. His brother is never satisfied with any progress he makes and only points out what he's still no good at. The sect disciples still whisper and mock when they think he can't hear. Er-ge still sighs and shakes his head at the smallest perceived 'antics', and San-ge and Jiang-xiong and Wei-xiong won't even look at him.
What is he still doing wrong?
'Nothing,' a little voice whispers in the back of his head. 'You are burning yourself out for nothing. They don't care how much you change for them.'
As Fall arrives, then a harsh Winter, the voice continues to sometimes invade his thoughts. It offers reassurance and comfort when no one else does, and even though he's sure he's just losing his mind, he starts listening to it more.
Nie Huaisang gets dragged out on a night hunt in the cold by his brother, and the voice gently warns him that he's only being brought along to be embarrassed for the entertainment of the others. When he fails to capture a beast and the disciples are laughing at him and his brother is rolling his eyes and shaking his head at his uselessness, Huaisang finally shuts out everything except the voice.
It offers him comfort, sanctuary, rest. Safety from further humiliation.
All he has to do is follow where it leads.
As everyone else is focused on the next monster to be killed, Nie Huaisang wanders off alone into the frozen dark.
By the time he wanders back out, weeks later, he's been converted into a treasured pet by the creature of ice, and no one knows if he can be saved anymore.
He certainly doesn't want to be.
i super extra don't want to get involved in mdzs discourse, but i did see a post in the jc tag earlier today that was like "jc fans shouldn't pretend like jc wasn't physically abusive towards jl because why else would jl flinch away from him in this one scene it's like you guys don't even know canon" and i blocked that person bc i didn't like their tone and just moved on, but the post did bother me a bit because i was pretty sure i would have remembered a time where jc had been genuinely violent with jl. but who knows, i'm new here, i don't have a photographic memory, maybe i did forget.
except now i am watching the untamed and jin ling says basically word for word "my uncle's never hit me, he's all talk." and ik drama canon is not book canon, but i'm pretty sure in book canon one of the things people constantly say about jiang cheng is that, when it comes to his loved ones, he's all bark and no bite. (wwx being the only sorta exception but even then...) idk i'm not saying jc has never done anything wrong, i'm not saying he's an uwu softie just the cuddliest of teddy bears, but like there is a swath of difference between having a bad temper and being abusive and like that's a distinction i find important and one i will keep making when dealing with jc
if you disagree with what i've said here, pls feel free to block me that's what that button is for x
I have too many thoughts on the Yunmeng siblings to fit into a succinct post, but I can offer you a Jiang Yanli addendum to the tummy hurt alignment.
× major character death (wangxian) ×
"This blood will be in your hands."
Lan Qiren remember those words like he has just heard them. The last words his younger nephew told him, looking straight into his eyes with such defiance, such fire and hatred, that it surprised him.
It shouldn't.
Lan Wangji's blood was, indeed, in his hands. Not only his, but all his clan who witnessed in silence as well as condoned the act itself.
That time, they all thought they were doing the right thing, just following their rules as they should. None of them were supposed to follow or befriend evil, let along protect it and fight against one own clan for it. It was a sacrilege, a scandal, what Lan Wangji did - hurting 33 elders just to protect a demonic cultivator. Lan Qiren could only scoff and rage, happy to sign his nephew's sentence of 33 lashes of the discipline whip.
Oh, how wrong he was.
Beside those words, the thing he remembers and regret the most, was the face Lan Xichen expressed when he heard, when he arrived at Cloud Recesses to a silent, lonely funeral. The tears he shed when he saw his younger brother, his only brother, look like he was only asleep, serene and in peace. Cold to the touch.
It's been 13 years since then. Since his older nephew even looked at him properly.
And now, to hear that his death was for nothing. That they killed (killed!) a righteous man who was innocent. Not one, but two. Because although he was rash and arrogant, Wei Wuxian was also a victim, the biggest of them all. The most righteous cultivation to ever walk between them, who won a war for them and was soon treated as dirt.
"This blood is in my hands." Lan Qiren thought, late at night, a cold pot of tea in front of him.
What did he do to his nephew? Why... No. He knows why. He shouldn't pretend otherwise.
"Wangji's blood is in my hands. Wei Wuxian's blood is in all of our hands."
Beside his pot of tea, long forgotten, was a package delivered to him earlier that day. Letters, written and half-written, dry flowers, drawings, poems, more drawings, a tentative confession written with tears staining. All expressing a deep love between two young man.
The regret. This regret. It'll be his downfall. To think of what it could be, of what it will never be.
Because of him.
Because their blood is in his hands.
Wei Ying has approximately five minutes from when Jiang Cheng rushes into the bathroom to finish getting dressed for school and to when he starts yelling at Wei Ying to hurry downstairs so they can leave. This gives him just enough time to carefully count through all the stack of bills he has piled on his messy bedspread, one by one.
However, at this point, it’s purely ceremony. Wei Ying has been counting his savings every day this week, keeping track of exactly how much more he needed for his plan.
And today, finally after so many months, Wei Ying has enough to put this next step into action. He stuffs the wad of bills into his backpack, giving himself one minute and thirty seconds to spare before Jiang Cheng calls for him to get his butt downstairs.
He passes the time by flopping onto his belly on his bed and squeals into his pillow, joy and exhilaration leaking out of his pores and flooding his cheeks. He turns over so he can stare at the glow-in-the-dark stars Yanli-jie helped him put up years ago, and releases a sigh that’s so lovesick he’d be embarrassed if it wasn’t for how unabashedly happy he is at this moment.
Today is the day, finally!
Wei Ying slides down the stair banister before Jiang Cheng can call from him. He nails the landing, of course, and beams, triumphant.
“What’s got you in a good mood this early,” Jiang Cheng grumbles, grumpy as he always is every morning.
He boops Jiang Cheng’s nose and snickers at his affronted expression. “Wouldn’t you like to know?” Jiang Cheng never wants to know, of course, instead simply rolling his eyes and tugging Wei Ying out the door.
Good, Wei Ying doesn’t want to explain, not on such an auspicious day like today. Jiang Cheng would never agree with what he was doing, anyway, which is why Wei Ying has kept this plan carefully under wraps.
For the last few months, Wei Ying has been saving up his lunch money alongside every spare coin he can gather, even if that meant he’d stopped buying food for lunch.
Which was absolutely fine! At first, he got through the worst of it by stealing tiny morsels of food off his friends' plates, until Lan Zhan finally took pity on him and started bringing double portions of his lunch to share. So now, every day Wei Ying gets a fresh, homecooked meal instead of whatever swill the cafeteria is serving that day. A net positive gain.
This has all been perfectly well and good, and Wei Ying is absolutely not affected by Lan Zhan's seemingly infinite kindness and his cute little blushing ears every lunch period when he silently offers Wei Ying the red lunch box that matches his own blue one perfectly and has to be brand new since Lan Zhan has never owned anything that wasn't white, blue, or grey.
No, Wei Ying cannot let this get to him, as impossibly adorable as it is.
Because he has a plan in mind and it’s foolproof. As long as he follows it to the letter, then everything will go exactly according to plan.
It's cleverly titled: Wei Ying's Ten-Step Plan to Make Lan Zhan Realize He's In Love With Me.
(Maybe he needs a shorter title.)
Lan Xichen was always slow to anger. He always had control over his temper. Whenever pissed, he always would remove himself from the situation; making sure to take a breath of fresh air. The only time he remembers actually losing it was at his brother’s husband but those two are happily married now and recently adopted a son. However, his boyfriend, Jin Guangyao, was close to pushing him over. He slept in his office instead of coming back to their shared apartment at night. The actions he took in his plot to climb the ranks at his company hurt everyone Jin Guangyao Yao was close to. His brother, father, mentor, and friends all cut ties with him. The only one who didn’t was Lan Xichen.
Xichen wanted to give his A-Yao a chance, really he really did. However, the trust that was the glue between the two was weakening to the point where it might as well have fully dissolved into nothing. Was there really nothing between the two left? Xichen didn’t want to believe that. Surely the blossoms of his love for A-Yao were still in full bloom and hadn't withered and expired yet.
He invited A-Yao out to their favourite cafe. It was where they had their first date and where A-Yao asked him out before that. It was a high tea place with exquisite china cups and teapots. On the platter placed in the middle of the table, there was an assortment of different cakes, macaroons, and other small baked goods.
Xichen was surprised that this date could even happen. A-Yao was so concerned with his job that they had to reschedule multiple times because he worked too late or took on another project, pushing their date further and further back. Sometimes he even forgot to show up, leaving Xichen at the place alone. They were only able to go out today because Xichen quite literally chased after him to remind him. Xichen had this thought that occasionally popped into his mind. What if A-Yao didn’t give a fuck about their relationship anymore. Xichen knew this was an intrusive thought and tried to push it away.
“What’s been keeping you busy?” Xichen asked him.
“I’ve received an anonymous letter detailing Qin Su.” A-Yao replied, cutting a piece of cake on his plate.
“A letter? About your assistant?”
“Former assistant, and no, not completely ” A-Yao corrected. Former? He fired her? A-Yao loved his assistant and would always sing praise about her over text, phone, and in person to Xichen. Why would he fire her?
“Not completely?” Xichen asks, confused.
Complete and utter silence from A-Yao.
“Please answer me.”
“They threatened me. They told me that all my secrets would be released unless I fired A-su.” He muttered, avoiding eye contact with Xichen. “They wanted her fired because they felt I only hired her because of nepotism.”
Xichen let out a sigh of disappointment. “A-Yao, what if they didn’t even have your secrets? Then, you just hurt your sister for nothing.”
“Babe, I had no choice! What if they did know? Then what would I have done if they were released?”
“Did you want to fire her?”
“No! Like I said, I didn't really have a choice. Maybe they were right, maybe it was nepotism.”
“How could you not have a choice. She was your assistant, a part of your branch at work. Besides, if you felt it was nepotism, why would you hire her in the first place?” Xichen scolded
“I-I was pressured into it by my father a few years ago.”
Xichen settled down. “I see.”
“I was just scared this person would just reveal the fact that I got my father and brother fired just last year..”
“You what?”
A-Yao looks him dead in the eye, pleadingly his voice shaking. “I-I felt I had to. But, babe, you don’t have to worry. You know I’d never hurt you, right?”
Xichen snaps at him, standing up and putting his hands down on the table, gaining attention from everyone else around. “You said you loved her. You say you love me, but how do I know that? How do I know you’re not just using me?! I just wish you’d thought things through before I you know, fell in love with you?” Fuck. Xichen can’t take that back. He does admit that he wanted to confront him about that. Not like that, though. He wanted to ask him about his worries, have A-Yao comfort him, and then tell him it’s okay and he won’t have to worry. Xichen fucked that up. That won’t ever happen. Especially considering Meng Yao’s reaction. His eyes widen, he mumbles something that looks somewhat like an apology, rummages through his wallet, leaves money to pay, and then he runs. Xichen felt he should chase after him and say he’s sorry, so he’s not the one who got away. But he can’t. He feels glued to his seat.
After a while and a very concerned waiter who went by the name Wen Ning from his name tag asking if he’s okay, Xichen decides he’ll go home, apologize to Meng Yao, and maybe they can move past this like nothing happened? He leaves money to pay for his portion of the bill and spends what feels like forever on public transit.
Once he unlocks the door, His apartment looks more desolate, as if something were missing. The grey colour palette looks more hostile. It reminded him of when he and A-Yao discussed painting the walls and agreed their landlord would have their heads. He walks into their bedroom when he finally notices it:All of A-Yao’s stuff is just gone, as if it were reduced to nothing by ashes. He found a note tied to a bouquet of hyacinths and rue...hyacinths and rue? Xichen wasn’t very well versed in flower language; that’s something he’d have to ask his brother-in-law about. He decided to read the note.
To my dearest Xichen,
I really cherished every moment we spent together. However, I realized I really treated you like shit. As if I didn’t give a fuck about you and as if I was only using you for protection against my father and for your status as a Lan. Towards the end of our relationship, I couldn’t give you what you deserved, and I didn’t communicate well enough with you. I want you to know I really give a fuck about you. I love you, and for that reason, I’m killing our relationship. Despite you telling me you’d die for me at one point, I feel you’re better off without me. I bid you well, my love.
With regret,
Jin Guangyao
