Strange. I could have sworn that Mermail plays back in Zexal era were actually pretty tame compared to stuff like salads, only using various cards to trigger Atlanteans and summon powerful beatsticks or dip into the Xyz toolbox. At least, that’s what I got when I tried an era-accurate Mermail deck on LotD.

It was the Salads of its day, or one of them. It ended up being pretty damn powerful and meta defining during the ZEXAL era's tournaments.

But compare what it does versus most of the Decks in ZEXAL do. They have Simple Effects for the most part.

I wanted to sketch something for each of my ocs with their aces but unfortunately i passed out last night so i'm just going to chuck the actual card beside a picture of them, lol

Starting off with the Synchro Dimension, Hamelin uses a Yang Zing deck, and has two "secret roommates" (read: pet rats) that she named after Ba Xia and Jiaotu, her two main Extra Deck Aces.

She switches gears to Magikeys when in her Phantom Thief persona, who has a deep grudge against...

Jackie, who uses Swordsouls, an archetype that carries much meaning to her. Her belt is based on QXYL's sword(?)tail(?) and her unwavering devotion to an estranged childhood friend makes her a worthy wielder of the sword the card is based on, which represents integrity.

Jackie works for Fleur, who uses Aromages. As someone who is very at home behind a chessboard, she doesn't like dueling that much as it has too many uncontrollable factors, such as luck.

Moving to the Standard Dimension, first up is Cider and her Myutants! What? Her duel disk? Oh, that's because she's originally from [REDACTED]

Weird, how did we end up in the Xyz Dimension? Anyway, Alcidis uses Witchcrafters, and before you ask me how he Xyz summons with this deck, my answer is that he splashes in Dogmatika cards from his bestie:

Arte, who uses Dogmatika! When she duels, it's like a switch flips, and she looks a lot like her brother... It scares her teacher, because it reminds him of a very unpleasant memory...

Viol used Mermails during the war, but after the events of the show he upgrades his ace from Abyss Dweller to a... custom monster... that I haven't designed yet lmao sigh one day i will

Back in Academia, Faye and Fence shared a Dream Mirror deck, each memorising one side of the deck as they struggled too much to memorise and use a single deck by themselves. After they moved to Standard, Fence picked up Normal Pendulums and Faye uses a custom Xyz archetype that lets her transform like her favourite masked riders!

Last but not least, Fuschia with his Despians! He picked it because he loves red and purple, but more importantly, he found the love of his life... Aluber the Dogmatic. Yeah, he's one of those weirdos with a duel monster crush (same tbh)

He'd never admit he had a crush on Aluber during the events of ARC-V, but post-canon he unabashedly has a giant poster of him (pictured above) in his room.

(And then he cards them all together after helping them reunite)

Themed-Day: A Decade of FYYCA

Today marks the 10-year anniversary of FYYCA (Again, for a perspective on how long ago in this card game that was ago...Mermails were released one month later). As with prior years, here’s an overview of the past year’s posts, with the top three posts (in descending order) of each respective month:

Speedroid Ultra Hound took the top spot for the preceding year. However, the top three spots all-time (in terms of note count) remain the same: Change of Heart, Toon World, and Dark Magician Girl (this art), respectively (and Change of Heart just passed 40K yesterday).

I wavered quite a bit on what cards to post for this, but Past, Present, and Future seemed like a good theme for the decade of doing this. With that in mind, the three cards posted will feature one card from the distant past (with a new art), a card from the most recent TCG main set release, and a card that fits with the Future idea.

I say it each year and I’ll say it once again: Thanks to all whom have been here and enjoyed this blog for these ten years so far. Keep an eye out, as hopefully sometime in November/early December (once re-licensing is complete), we will finally have a give-away after a long while since the last one. And there may be a few other surprises around the corner into the new year...

Frog: they are frogs.

Graydle: Strange alien creatures made of a metallic, slightly liquid slime. Appear to have the ability to possess other creatures.

Gunkan: Battleships made of sushi. To be completely honest with you, I don't know how I would make this playable.

Icejade: Beings made of a crystalline, waterlike substance that slowly hardens and darkens as they age, until they eventually become solid crystals from which magical weapons can be made.

It’s Format Friday!

Good Morning, Duelists! It’s me, Luna, the Duel Reporter and it’s Friday, March 31, 2023! Today, I’d like to bring attention a way to play Yu-Gi-Oh that you might not have tried. As I’ve stated more than a few times in this blog, I think Yu-Gi-Oh is a fantastic game, and there’s a near infinite amount of ways to play it.

Well, today, I’d like to start with one of my favorites, it’s a Time Wizard format that is a bit under the radar. Allow me to introduce you to HAT Format.

What is HAT Format?

HAT Format is a Yu-Gi-Oh format based on the cards legal in early July, 2014, also meaning it’s Master Rule 2, meaning there are no Extra Monster Zones, the player going first gets to draw a card, their can only be one Field Spell at a time, and the latest product releases were Primal Origin and the Lightsworn Structure Deck.

The name HAT comes from one of the best decks in the format, Hand Artifact Traptrix, a powerful control deck that revolved around a completely reactionary control base, using Traptrix monsters to Xyz Summon and set Trap Holes, Fire Hand and Ice Hand to pop monsters and spell/traps respectively, and Artifacts, which can react on being destroyed to do a myriad of things, but, primarily stun a turn to summon monsters and destroy cards without targeting, which was a huge deal back in 2014.

That being said, HAT wasn’t the only good deck in HAT Format, as the format has a myriad of powerful decks in it! Infernity returns to the format as a strong DARK Xyz deck, Madolche and Evilswarm are powerful Rank 4 decks, Hieratic, Sylvan, and Mermail provide an easy way to climb into high level and high rank plays!

Hieratic Rulers

Here’s Hieratic Rulers, it’s a powerful combo deck that has a strong going first or second game that can build huge boards and occasionally OTK, depending on your build. I personally play mine as a toolbox of Dragon Ranks, but, I’ve played against a few people who play more into the Synchros, the Rank 6’s and the Rank 7’s.

Hieratic Dragons tribute each other to swarm and activate effects, and when they do get tributed, they summon a Normal Dragon from hand/deck/GY, making Synchro, Xyz and Dragon Ruler set ups easy!

Evilswarm

Evilswarm is a really fun, really strong control deck that revolves around using the Rank 4 toolbox as a control tool to limit and restrict your opponent’s resources as much as possible before swinging for the kill.

I haven't actually played against anyone with it though... Do not have irl friends that like Yugioh. Well. Technically I have one but he is far away at college.

I was just laying here like "wtf is a dinks... Are they talking about like shrinkey dinks? What?" I was so confused lol

Anyways I haven't played in years but I've not given up on recovering my account one day... One of these days. Have not played Master Duel but some of my favorite decks were Aromages, Fortune Ladies, and E-heroes. Ooh, and Vampires, I had a lot of fun with those too. I think most decks are fun but half the fun is mixing and matching spells/traps to put your own spin on things. Duel Monsters is great Oh How could I forget all the water themed decks? Mermails are so fun, so are the like. Atlantean themed ones. I remember putting together a deck for Shark that was just water monsters and I loved it. Oh and Wind-Ups!!! Wind-Ups are genuinely really fun to play and all the monsters are so cute. God I miss Duel Links I wanna play the card game video game so bad.
