A Content Farm Animal Is Born: My New 13th Book In 2024 依依得捨 (Departure Time)
The joy of writing is the opportunity of sharing what I believe. The pain of writing is me seeing deadlines looming larger and larger.
A writer does not simply write. He has to sell books so that the publisher’s fingers will not get burned. Ultimately, he has one moral duty: to write well to attract readers. He can be deprived of time but he cannot lose his quality and style.
Online media platform is often called a “content farm” these days. Writers are the various kinds of “animals”. They write on different specific topics attracting the target group of readers. They collectively generate a large amount of textual web contents which result in massive reader page views. At the end of the day, the goal is to generate huge advertising revenue through “micro targeting” in the media world.
I wrote in the 1980s, but took many years’ break in the 1990s. I started to write again about 10 years ago but no longer for newspapers and magazines. My new bosses are online media which, during the current trend, put focus on news and gossips rather than serious contributions from freelance contributors.
I used to freely write essays and proses. Whatever my mind can conceive and believe, it can be the topic of my writing. Freedom is never won; it is given. Now, the online media editors ably plan and arrange writers one after another in a particular order. There is a splendid array of contents on the table and each writer is responsible for a dish which can attract a reader to try so that he will become a sticky fan. My job is to write on arts and culture; and occasionally on law as I am a lawyer. I am hopefully a good animal nowadays.
When we think about change, we know life was one thing and now it becomes another. A veteran writer in Hong Kong went through taking a bus to deliver articles to a newspaper headquarter, later simply faxing it to the editor, and presently just transmitting an essay through a computer or mobile phone! Well, as a writer for 40 years, I think the secret of change is, as Socrates said, “To focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”
My new book依依得捨 (Departure Time) has just been released by Cosmos Books (天地圖書).I am grateful to it. It is my new book in 2024! This is my 13th publication, a collection of my art and cultural essays. I also thank Hong Kong Trade Development Council for allowing me a talk in the Book Fair in 2024 to promote my book. Enjoy it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffM3f1NCk6o
You can support and buy from any bookstore including Cosmos Books (天地圖書), Joint Publishing (三聯書店), The Commercial Press (商務印書館).  Alternatively, you can click on the links below or any online book shops:

A kind gesture can reach my heart that your generosity will make it beat. I work hard in silence and let my result be the noise.

In The Time It Takes To Rise
Tumblr media
People say I'm too soft sometimes, that I let things slide, wait too long, or give too many second chances. But I don't see it that way.
I think my patience is one of the few things that's kept me steady in a world that's anything but. When the cafe gets busy and the orders stack up and tempers flare, I take a breath. I smile. I keep moving. There's a rhythm to waiting, like the way bread rises, or tea steeps just right. You can’t rush good things. People need time too, as well as space. And someone who won’t give up on them the moment they mess up.
I guess that’s where the kindness comes in.
I don’t really go around calling myself kind, but I notice things. I notice when someone in sad or happy. When they stir there coffee for too long, lost in thought. When they say “I’m fine” but won’t meet your eyes. I’m not great with big, loud gestures- but I’ll remember your order even if you haven’t been in for a few days. I’ll slip an extra cookie into your bag if it looks like you had a rough day.
that’s what I like about myself. That I try to make room for people, even when they’re hard to understand. That I wait. That I care, quietly.

i feel insane bc i have a lot of fun with taking things and making them darker and edgier but like there are rules to it. there are specific things i like and don’t like. it’s compelling when you take parts of the original that are only implied or lightly touched upon, yet are very much present and important, and expand on those. that’s transformative and delicious and very much called for. it’s boring and tacky when you dump a bunch of blood and death and evil onto something that was perfectly innocent and straightforward and didn’t need to be anything else especially if the original thing didn’t even have much of a narrative so to speak

Finished 176, and once again I’m in love with the writing on this show.
I love how Martin knows Jon is keeping something from him, and can tell he is feeling apprehensive about whatever he has to do to catch Basira, and when he pushes Jon to open up about it, Jon is actually honest! Sort of…
Tumblr media
Because Jon is nervous about betraying someone’s trust, it’s just not Basira.
I love how Martin is just like “If it were me I’d forgive you ☺️”
And Jon’s “Mm” in response like “I suppose we’re about to find out…”

Hey. Idk if this is me growing up or just being disillusioned with inter celebs etc. Im a 23 yr old trans man so I grew up and was inspired by chella on the YouTube community. But now I just…don’t like chella man anymore. I feel like…he became an industry plant? Over the pandemic asking fans for money to send to him directly to help others and not showing where the money was going exactly incident as well as just becoming older I noticed he seemed to almost want to become the next Keith haring or basquiat? He almost…now seems very fake? He takes deals with brands to be representation but doesn’t do much to call out certain brands for their faults etc.
Idk anymore
I give Chella credit in that he was one of the few transmen that I looked up while I was young, especially with him being BIPOC. Showing him to my family helped them understand me. But that's where the inspiration kinda stops, because it was painful to be surrounded by years-in-transition trans men online when I was absolutely nowhere I wanted to be. That was a me problem tho. But I also didn't know much about his whole donation incident.
Ig heres what I have to say. It's not great to view other people as your justification of your morals. We don't know how people have had to live or how they live now, we don't know what decisions they have to make, and we dont know what kind of fears or goals they have. Chella is allowed to do whatever he wants with his art or his modelling career, just like how I genuinely believe anyone else in the world is capable of making the right decisions for themselves (even if we dont like those decisions!). Im not really concerned with figuring out if hes an industry plant or a "class traitor" (lol) or even if he's "fake". To be honest, I'm all for BIPOC folks getting their $. Does that mean I enjoy seeing wealthy BIPOC folk perpetuate classism and racism? No. Just cuz someone is succeeding for themselves doesn't mean people cant critique them. I guess what Im saying is I see waaay too many people online take the things they enjoy and the people they follow as projections of their morals: "no! stop [Insert celebrity name] you're being problematic and its makes us fans look bad!" Like....Okay lmfao. People are grown adults and are going to make decisions for themselves. Just because you might enjoy a celebrity does not mean your morals are based on how good of a person they are.
and youre allowed to not like the same things anymore just like how people are allowed to change, for better or for worse. I think within online communities there is way too much pressure on "looking" like a good person versus actually being one...because sometimes BEING a good person makes you look absolutely vile in terms of online spaces/communities love of isolating, removing, and deleting "problematic" (and vulnerable) people from their spaces with no trial, discussion, or attempt at conflict mediation. Yea yea I do think people have every right to be criticized just as they have every right to make whatever decision they want, but what Im trying to get at is to really stop viewing anyone with a platform as someone you can other once they dont meet your standards. This is not the same as denouncing or critiquing someone for really egregious behavior (white supremacy, harrassment, bullying, interpersonal violence). Once you kinda start living by your own morals without needing other people's actions/behaviors to justify/define them, you learn to focus on building connections rather than destroying them.
again, this is a much nuanced topic and you prolly werent expecting me to go into this. but ive grown over the years and have engaged in some nasty and vile mob mentality behavior that i just dont vibe with anymore. im not really the kind of person now to speculate online or publicly what other people are doing or should be doing or whether theyre problematic or not. I don't really care about Chella man or most celebrities rn. People r just gonna be people, and I will always have empathy for those of marginalized identities. Free will, autonomy, and self determination goes both ways, but so does accountability, transformative justice, and reconciliation.
but also like kill ur idols lol

Trying to build muscle is so frustrating bc it's hard enough to motivate myself to eat as it is but now I have to eat more protein and my stomach is too liddol for the amount of food I need in a day
Can I get an f in the chat?
#tw food#tw eating#i like. forget to eat#and it's low priority for me bc i dont like cooking#bc it can make me start to think abt calories and micro/macro nutrients and i used to have disordered eating#so thinking abt that stuff is triggering to me#but now that im trying to build muscle i have to super pay attention to protein and shit and it's HARD#im trying to like HOPEFULLY convert 3-4 lbs of fat to muscle#just feel dysphoric abt my hips and since you cant target fat deposits ill probably have to lose like 3 lbs of fat instead#of the 1 that i think will help with that a bit#ive been working out a lot and have definitely seen results but i do not eat enough as it is to see the muscle growth in my back shoulders#and arms that i want to see. so now i have to eat more and it's hard bc i get so tireddddddddd and boreddddd and also the cooking thing#and PLEASE no dms worrying abt my eating habits ive improved so much and I'm doing well!!! I'm eating MORE even!!#it's just hard bc it feels like a chore to me#which is part of why i had disordered eating in the first place. well that and dysphoria#I'm legitimately healthy and eat well for the most part. it's just such a hassle to consciously try to build muscle yk? im eating i swear#i love food ask anyone#actually dont bc for whatever reason everyone around me thinks i dont eat bc they never /see/ me snack#i just keep my snacks in my room bc that's where my workstation is rather than snacking in the kitchen bc i dont like to waste time#that's my hangup tbh. i always feel like im wasting time even though it's hella important to cook yourself good meals#it's probably bc i go on a lot of walks so that eats into the time that i WOULD spend cooking#but yeah like i pound back food at restaurants so ppl also say it as a joke bc of how quickly i eat when im not distracted#i could eat more veggies though tbh. i just dont like many of them outside of complicated dishes and like i said i dont like to cook#and theyre so low calorie it takes FOREVER to eat enough to be filling#love protein though#it's quick and tasty ;3#also this is coming from someone who eats baby carrots like they're jelly beans lmao#they're a treat to me bc it takes so long to eat a serving of them#and they're sweet#so to be clear i DO like veggies they just take a while to finish

GLOW UP GUIDE FOR 2025⠀
Tumblr media
READ: On average, it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic — 66 days to be exact. And considering that 2025 is precisely these many days away, why not start with our glow up plan already?
Tumblr media
Physical Glow Up-
BODY
— 5-10K steps a day.
— 7-8 hours of sleep.
— workout everyday for 1 hr atleast- yoga/stretching/pilates/cardio/lifting weights. a workout may take one hour, but your mood will be boosted for the next 12 hours.
— posture training.
— sunlight exposure after waking up for at least 10 minutes.
NUTRITION
— 2-3 liters of water every day.
— limit your caffeine intake.
— avoid sugars as much as you can.
— high protein diet, pre and probiotics.
— more fruits and veggies (+ green smoothies if you like).
— no junk/processed food/trans fat.
— no eating after 8 pm.
SKINCARE
— be clear on your skin type (oily, dry, combination, sensitive).
— once you're clear, use these accordingly- cleanser, toner, targeted serum, eye cream, moisturizer, sunscreen (≥50 spf).
— keep your bedding clean as well.
— no picking of skin on your lips, cuticle etc.
— gua sha to help improve blood circulation and lessen toxins.
— cold therapy may take three to five minutes of being uncomfortable, but your energy levels will be boosted for the rest of the day.
— remove makeup before you go to bed.
BODY CARE
— shower every day.
— exfoliate 2x a week.
— use body lotion (shea butter/aloe vera gel/coconut oil).
HAIR CARE
— wash hair 2-3x a week
— oil your scalp 2x a week, at least 3 hours before shampoo.
— hair mask 1x per week.
— never brush wet hair.
— use silk pillow case.
HYGIENE
— brush your teeth 2x a day, clean tongue and the roof of the mouth daily.
— floss daily.
— cut your nails 1x a week, never remove the cuticles.
— glycolic acid under arm for odor and discoloration.
— never use soap on your coochie.
Tumblr media
Mental Glow Up-
MINDSET
— set clear goals- define and breakdown your aspirations.
— start your mornings with positive affirmations.
— surround yourself with uplifting content and people.
— be shamelessly selfish to your career and mental health, remove anyone or anything that doesn't align with your priorities and wellbeing.
— boost your brain health by these 4 neuroscience tools:
difficult first: start your day with the most difficult task (cortisol and dopamine are high in the body meaning that your body/mind is primed to work).
rest your eyes: introduce a micro-pause after learning by resting/closing your eyes - will help retain information better.
tomorrow's worries: write tomorrow's to-do list before bed as it is proven to be effective in helping you fall asleep.
find time to play: engage in low-stake play. can be anything you find fun but where the outcome doesn't matter (induces neuroplasticity + reduces stress).
MIND
— meditation might take as low as ten minutes, but your focus will be improved for the rest of the day.
— no social media after waking up and at least an hour before bed.
— keep aside 1 hr of time to read daily! reading a new book may take five hours, but you will keep the knowledge forever.
— journaling, gratitude.
— digital detox once a week or for 12 hours.
— limit unnecessary screentime, unfollow or cut off people you don't want to see.
JOURNALING
— choose a regular time each day to journal, making it a part of your routine.
— find a quiet, comfortable place free from distractions. light a candle if you want.
— allow your thoughts to flow without censoring or editing.
— write about your feelings and emotions to understand them better. write about things you are thankful for to boost your mood. write about your short-term and long-term goals. identify what triggers certain emotions or reactions
— set a timer for 5-10 minutes and write continuously during that time.
— reflect on both positive experiences and challenges.
— make lists, journal your thoughts on these questions.
— journal at night to clear your mind before bedtime, because emotions and thoughts lose their power once we acknowledge them.
— a gratitude practice may take five minutes, but your mindset will be shifted for the rest of the day.
AFFIRMATIONS
— customise affirmations to your needs.
Tumblr media
Personal Life-
WEEKLY TASKS
— initiate small changes: begin with small, manageable tasks such as making your bed or cleaning your room every sunday.
— celebrate your success: reward yourself when you achieve your goals or have a consistently productive week. consider treats like buying flowers for yourself or watching your favorite show.
DAILY WORK
— set achievable goals: establish realistic goals for the day, week, or month ahead.
— track your progress.
— organise your work space, declutter your shelves etc.
— embrace the power of lists: keep a list of tasks to be done and their deadlines. this way, you start each day with a clear plan. to make it visually appealing and motivating, consider using productivity apps like evernote, habit tracker, or notion.
PRODUCTIVITY TIPS
— wake up early.
— plan ahead everything, do scheduling. you can use:
google calendar / notion / tasks .
— if the task takes less than 2 minutes to finish, do it immediately.
— countdown rule, if you are procrastinating, count 1-2-3-4-5 and jump.
— start slow, don't rush and try to do everything at one time.
— follow a proper routine, use app locks based on screentime.
— pomodoro technique, 25 min work, and 5 min break.
— schedule longer break times as well e.g 30 min nap.

I smile. I guess that’s where the kindness comes in.
I don’t really go around calling myself kind, but I notice things. I notice when someone in sad or happy. When they stir there coffee for too long, lost in thought. Micro-Moments Unfolded: How Brands Ride the Spontaneity Wave - Coho AI
Micro-moments emerge when consumers reflexively turn to a device, predominantly a smartphone, as a response to an instantaneous need or curiosity. They aren’t just confined to purchasing decisions. They encapsulate a spectrum of actions: “I want to know,” where a user might be looking up a fact or information; “I want to buy,” which can lead them down a purchasing rabbit hole; “I want to go,” guiding them to seek out locations or experiences; or even “I want to do,” pushing them to explore a new activity or hobby. These moments are fleeting but potent, representing pivotal junctures in the decision-making process. https://www.coho.ai/blog/micro-moments/

Sir how did you single Handedly discover 95 species of frog. I am still in college for Bio rn, and the academic process seems to take 100 Years to get anything finalized, how were we missing 95 species of frog and how did you discover all of them in a timely manner?
Simple: I didn't. None of my work is done without a large and amazing team, including me and my colleagues, the students we take along, the local guides, the camp cook (the most important member of every field team!), the lab technicians, et cetera. You don't have to do it all by yourself.
Taxonomy is a generation ship; we have to train our own successors in order to see the discipline survive, and hope to achieve the dream of 'completing' the inventory (possible in vertebrates, impossible in most invertebrate groups). If every generation had to start from scratch, or if a lack of collaboration meant all workers would have to work on their own, we would constantly be losing decades of work (and we do in some disciplines, which is a disaster!).
Most of the species I have described (or perhaps 'co-described' would be a better way to say it) were not actually discovered by me, but by my colleagues, including my former PhD supervisors. I myself have actually discovered (i.e. been the first one to collect for science) less than a quarter of the species I've described, I think (but have also discovered many more that have not yet been described).
Also, Madagascar is just special; it has huge levels of endemism, including micro-endemism, and just off-the-charts frog diversity. Consequently, visits to even well-surveyed protected areas frequently result in new species discoveries. But my team and I mostly target previously unvisited or poorly known forests, and consequently we stack the deck in favour of discovering new species.
(by the way, it's actually 103 now, but that is not the point)

You have to make a fucking commitment that extends beyond your narrow, myopic definition of "normal" or you're going to continue to fail the fascism pop quiz, every fucking time.
You need to be willing to defend shit you find personally unsavory/unappealing/unintelligible. You need to be able to defend the weird porn. You need to defend the incomprehensible art. You need to defend the micro-identities that you think sound made up.
What matters is harm. Actual, tangible, documented harm. Not hypothetical. Not theoretical. Actual harm. If it's not harmful, it should be allowed to exist and anyone who tells you it shouldn't, it's trying to radicalize you. Don't fucking let them.
And if it causes actual harm, commit to actual harm reduction. Specific, tangible actions to minimize the specific, tangible harm. Anything else is propaganda.
I'm begging you to rub two brain cells together and stop platforming fascist talking points under the thinnest veneer of respectability. Your definition of normal doesn't apply to anyone else but yourself. If you're queer, if you're disabled, if you're a minority in any axis, stop fucking licking the boot that wants to crush your throat.
They mean you. When they call for the death of freaks and undesirables. When they want to criminalize anything that threatens children's safety. When they insist they only want to target dangerous perverts and malicious criminals.
They mean you.
Stop fucking helping them!

You went to a tailor!!! How was it 🙌 what were the considerations?
Hiiiiii!! so I just turned 30, and in preparation for this milestone I have been reflecting on my priorities and going, "dude, you LIVE like this??? you're ALLOWED TO NOT. please. you know you want better."
I currently enjoy a moderate amount of disposable income and no dependents, so 2025 is officially the Year Of Spending Money On Myself.
Being (1) trans (2) in possession of a dumptruck ass, approximately zero of the men's shirts and jackets available in stores fit me. Every single one, from the cheapest to the fanciest, is either too wide in the shoulders or too narrow in the hips. Usually both. The brands targeting butch lesbians are lovely and I am endlessly grateful they exist, but they .... aren't the level of high-quality craft that I yearn for and are often lacking the fine details of high-end menswear.
So.
I booked a consult with a bespoke tailor! I live in a major city, so there are several options downtown, and I picked the one whose vibe I liked best.
Last weekend I rode the train down to the shop, scrutinized many fabric swatches, got measured in great detail, and picked out what features I want for this first order of 3 shirts (button-down collar, how many buttons on the cuffs, pocket or no, etc).
Then the salesgirl emailed me that one of the 3 fabrics I selected is out of stock, so I went back this weekend to scrutinize all the fabric swatches again and decide on a substitute.
In about six weeks I'll go back for a fitting. They'll adjust the pattern based on that and then about two weeks later my 3 shirts will be ready!
For the last few years I have been existing in the tiniest possible sub-micro-capsule wardrobe with zero gradations of formality or comfort or anything. I'm really excited to build up a curated collection of well-made, well-fitting garments that I love and can wear for a long time.
