hi besties!
today I have a journaling tutorial to share with you
it’s called mind mapping!
practicing mindfulness is a good way to start regulating your emotions
all you need is a sheet of paper and a pen
if ur extra like me you can use magic markers 😂
step 1: take a moment to meditate
close your eyes and breathe deeply
allow yourself to feel everything that ur feeling, welcome every thought and every emotion
do that for about 3 minutes, then open your eyes
even if you experienced different emotions, choose the one feeling that stands out to you
write that emotion down in the middle of the paper and draw a circle around it
it can be a word or phrase, whatever ur feeling
step 2: thought branches
draw at least 5 lines outward from your main emotion, like you’re drawing a stick octopus
take a moment to think about how that emotion is making you feel, if it bothers you, makes you frustrated, sad, overwhelmed, anything
write it down at the other end of each line
you can draw more lines if you’d like. these are gonna be your thought branches
just make as many thought branches as you can
don’t be picky about what you write down
this is the time to allow yourself to feel everything
step 3: highlight key feelings
once you have a good amount of branches, take a highlighter and highlight the branches that stand out to you the most, or the ones that you feel most accurately describe how you’re feeling
turn the paper over and at the top of the page, write down your main emotion
below it, list everything that you highlighted
now you have a list of words or phrases that accurately describe your emotions
this is the time to question whether what you’re feeling has any truth to your life, or if it’s just a result of overthinking. write that down too
step 4: healthily express yourself
from here, you can use your list as a prompt to make a journal entry or you can make a drawing that symbolizes what you wrote down
anything at all. unleash your creativity.
this exercise is my favorite for releasing any overwhelming feelings that bother you
I have a motto:
“write it down, get it out, do it often.”
it inspires me to actively articulate my emotions and be more in tune with them.
