For this edition, I wanted to recommend a lovely fic by the incredibly talented @thefairylights aka Pocketsun. It was written for the Bloody Valentine event and it's such a sweet and creative take on the prompt “first kiss”

Why I love this fic: It has Mojo, need I say more? Alright fine, I'll say more; it's beautifully written of course, as I've come to expect from this author. The simple and elegant prose had me gripped from the first paragraph, and all the characterizations were spot on.

It offers an interesting look into Louis's POV of the post-Memnoch era. We get to see his grief and loneliness, and just how much both he and Mojo are affected by Lestat's absence. I loved the relationship between Louis and Mojo, as we get to watch them slowly grow to trust and love each other. And as the number one Loumand girlie, I also loved the little snippet we get of them in this fic.♥︎

The author masterfully blends both book and show canon, and it feels like a natural and direct continuation of the story, even with little to no knowledge of the books (I've only ever skimmed MtD so that was perfect for me 😂)

Overall, the world felt tangible and truly immersive. It was such a fun read and I highly recommend it!

Quick content warning for the Matrix chapter - there’s some Rogneto and cheating. The OTP is definitely Romy, but Rogue is ‘technically’ in a relationship with Magneto, so your mileage may vary.

Or: The only people with worse luck than the Skywalker lineage are X-Men. Rogue planned on spending her week freeing prisoners, test subjects, and slaves from a bunch of lame space pirates. The plan did not work.

Notes: Romy is a secondary couple in this fic, but I do enjoy and highly recommend it. I read this early on in my Romy journey and this fic has always stuck with me.

Well, I'm pretty much closing up shop, I'm afraid. I just queued up a week's worth of Proud Authors and a few Follower Recs, and for now I will leave the Inbox open. I still have nearly 100 fic recs that I haven't made posts for... although they are all bookmarked in my AO3 Wangxianficrecs' Collection so be sure to go cruise through that... sorting/filtering is much easier through AO3! I feel terrible that I haven't made posts, yet, and they may yet trickle out from time to time as I manage to make them.

BUT. Mostly I've gotta go deal with my Real Life (and eventually pursue new fandoms!), so y'all will be abandoned.  I'm so sorry the new mods thing didn't work out, but I'll leave this blog up forever as an online catalog for y'all to browse. And like I said, some posts may trickle through from time to time.

Involuntary Invisibility

I’ve read a few fics with this rare trope, and this is what I found when I searched my bookmarks.  Anyone know of any others?

In a word where neither the One Ring nor the Arkenstone exists and all survive the battle, Bilbo encounters a strange, magical creature while helping to evacuate Dale for the coming winter. He thinks nothing of it initially – but then he watches his own arm pass through solid wood and sees Thorin’s eyes widen in fear and call for him.

“I’m right here.” Bilbo wants to say, but cannot make a sound.

Not when he has been cursed to disappear.

"You are capable of more?" "More? Your majesty?" "More types of spells. More brain cells as well?" "Yes," he hissed. "Protect yourself." "What?" "Carl, shoot him."

Getting captured by Uther doesn't quite have the results Merlin expect.

My bookmark:  Lovely story. Modern royalty au, if you will, where, instead of executing Merlin, Uther makes him play invisible bodyguard, with a lot of emphasis on "You no longer exist." Merlin is terribly amiable, which is funny, and doesn't actually manage to keep his mouth shut when he bodyguards. Arthur creatively names him Voice.

He was used to slinking in shadows, hidden from sight. This was just ridiculous, really.

My bookmark:  "Hey, I figured out several important pieces of data with this little adventure," he protested.

"Such as?" Bruce prompted. Clint knew he was in trouble when Mr. Mellow looked pissed.

"Sitwell is an excellent liar, Fury still has the Gameboy I gave him for Christmas like six years ago, and the World Security Council wants to carve me up like a lab rat," he recited. He considered it an accomplishment that he was able to get any words out at all the way Nat still held him in place, fingertips carving into his skin.

Tony leaned back against the nearby counter and mused, "We figured out some stuff while you were out too, wanna know what?" He didn't wait for a response before he ticked off on his fingers, "One, you're an asshole. Two, the field around you is shrinking. Three, the World Security Council wants to carve you up like a lab rat, or possibly a frog because I doubt they've made it past sixth grade Biology, let's be honest here."

Draco Malfoy had stopped believing his wishes would be granted long ago. He could perhaps be forgiven for being startled, then, when one of them came true.

My bookmark:  Lovely: the Board decides to do away with the Slytherin House and Hogwarts fights back. Meanwhile, Pansy is terribly injured by a curse and that makes Draco the last Slytherin standing. "He's the last," the voice tells Harry. "There isn't much time." Draco starts by using a disillusionment Charm, but it quickly becomes involuntary invisibility. But Harry's watching, and doesn't want him to disappear entirely. UST, although it isn't sex-heavy at all. There are some shining bits, however, like this bit, after Draco's injured and somewhat stoned: ******** “And that mouth…” he exhaled slowly. “Such a pretty mouth, Potter. Such a pretty, pretty mouth. Makes a man want to grab handfuls of your horrible hair and kiss that pretty, pretty mouth until it’s all soft and puffy and swollen.” Malfoy abruptly released the hold on Harry’s jumper and smoothed the bunched fabric with his hand. “I mussed you,” he noted, his eyes drifting closed and the smile returning to pull at his lips. “I mussed Potter. Although, Potter is usually mussed.”Harry was frozen in place, staring at Malfoy’s face, his heart racing. /What the hell had that been?/ he thought, finally pulling back. Malfoy must be heavily drugged. It was the only explanation for what had just happened.

Stiles has a very unique superpower, in that he doesn't exist. He's invisible, untouchable, unhearable-is that a word?-and just not there. He feels like a ghost most of the time, although he can't walk through walls (he tried, the wall took offense and his nose paid the price) and he can still trip over his own feet. He blends perfectly into the background and no matter how hard he tries, nobody knows he's there.

It's a lonely life, he's not gonna lie.

But suddenly something changes. Stiles is part of a group project which includes probably the most explosive combination of people in his class. These people don't notice when he waves a hand right in front of their face-how could they when he doesn't exist? The possibilities are endless.

Oh, this is going to be so much fun.

My bookmark:  Such an interesting idea: Stiles' power is to make himself not exist... AT ALL. So from the time he's 8, he's vanished from everyone's awareness, all records deleted, everything. Only his dad can see him (and even that is periodically unreliable). But then suddenly, Derek sees him one day, which starts a chain of events that leads to him feeling hopeful once again about being able to interact with the world. It's kind of tragic, I mean, think of the loneliness, the skin hunger, the sense of abandonment involved in being non-existent for 8 years. But it eventually works out.

In Time of Trial by Shine  M.  38k.  Merlin.  Merthur.

Uther fears his son's power, and Merlin has helped Arthur flee to escape imprisonment. Now the two of them must fight to regain Arthur's rightful place in Camelot.

My bookmark:  Wow, what a fantastic story. 36k words never went so fast. This is the one where Uther's old friend Aelfric comes to visit and slowly drips poison into his ear until he's convinced that Arthur is going to try to depose him and take the crown. When he orders Arthur to be taken to the dungeons as a traitor (and killed on the spot if he struggles), Merlin races ahead of the guards to rescue Arthur. (Luckily, he's been practicing a spell that makes things invisible. Unluckily, he has to spring it on Arthur with no warning at all and convince him to be silent and still while the guards search his room around them.) And thus is magic revealed.The pair go on the run, and eventually settle near Tintagel, where all the Druids live, and begin preparations to fight back. Arthur allows himself to act on his attraction to Merlin (I'd rate this an M), perhaps because now that he sees that Merlin is a powerful warlock, he sees them as being equals. Also, there's no doubt of Merlin's loyalty, considering how they got out of Camelot.

Merlin's Moving Castle by KrisEleven  G.  49k.  Merlin.  Merthur.

As a result of some very unfortunate decisions, Arthur Pendragon, king of Camelot, is cursed by Morgana (also known as the Witch of the Wastes) and becomes fully invisible to anyone who doesn’t possess magic. Forced to abandon his kingdom, he begins his quest for a remedy to his unfortunate condition and comes across the quite charming - and even more annoying - Merlin who may be the only one able to save Albion, if only Arthur can convince him to try.

My bookmark:  What an amazing story. I kind of expected a rehash of the Howl's Moving Castle plot (which would have been fine, as I adore the story), but instead the author used only pieces of it and built something entirely new and totally belonging to Merlin and Arthur and their world from the show. There was a surprising amount of action (Merlin first meets Arthur during a fight and flight) and it culminates in an enormous battle. But in between, it's Arthur, learning to be patient and getting to know some new people... learning about the world through their eyes. It's just beautiful.

Beyond the Mirror's Edge by VivacissimoVoce  M.  49k.  Harry Potter.  Drarry.

Harry Potter is dead! A spell goes wrong in Advanced Charms class, leaving nothing but a charred ring and a pair of empty shoes. Draco Malfoy must figure out what happened and try to bring Harry back.

My bookmark:  interesting premise!The one where Harry is hit by a protection charm gone wrong and only his shoes are left. Dumbledore's Dead/Alive device only wavers with the needle halfway between the two when it's questioned, and no one knows where Harry is or how he's half alive. "The small wooden box with the life-death dial was mounted on the wall outside of the Charms classroom, with Potter’s shoes encased in a glass box beneath. The needle stayed resolutely fixed between the two indicators, but no one was sure what it meant."And then Draco hears, "Can anybody hear me?"Draco looked up and checked down the table. "Beg pardon?" he asked Pansy."I didn't say anything," she looked up in surprise."Anybody, please, if anybody can hear me please say something!"

When he wasn’t wearing it, he got jumpy, always waiting for someone to come at him wanting something—and now they did it even more urgently, if they ever saw him, because most of the time, nobody did.

What it says on the tin, really. Draco is the only one who notices that Harry has turned himself into a ghost and is "haunting them all before his death". He carefully takes the Cloak, just for 24 hours, challenging Harry to see if he can do without it. Of course, Harry's never heard a challenge from Draco that he hasn't immediately and fiercely accepted. But it's HARD. As Draco, in a weird combination of rude and kind, coaxes him through the week, Harry learns to be seen again, is shown how to protect himself, and finds himself falling for Draco.

This story is wonderful. It weaves Mulder and Scully's handling of their established (but not very new) relationship with some New Orleans history as the two learn about it while on a case and then while enjoying some R&R. It is so thoughtful, emotional, and satisfying. Title: Partial Abandon Author: MoJo Summary: Scully takes a twelve hour break in the Big Easy with Mulder for some pure MSR. Length: 41k (~7,300 words) Classification: MSR Rating: NC-17 Spoilers: None Favorite line: I closed my eyes, imagining a future that had yet to be written. Read the story! I do *think* I remember them being at Cloud Recesses when it happens? And Wei Ying is definitely aware of who he is.

Okay, having looked through Silver & Gold, that's definitely not it (though thanks for the rec, this is going on the TOP of my To Read list). A few more thoughts. I think they were in Lan Zhan's bed in the Jingshi and Wei Ying just kind of...pulls them off his skin or something? And it doesn't hurt Lan Zhan or disturb him.

For fic finder I’ve been going a little crazy looking for this one, -Wei Ying is married into Gusu lan (or engaged into it) and he is given a hairpiece to wear with black jewels, he goes back to lotus pier with lan qiren (and I believe lan Zhan and lan xichen) and is bullied into not wearing it by yu ziyuan etc. The Lans are not happy to see how he is treated by the Jiangs. 7. hello hello! I read this fic so long ago and I really can't remember it. I didn't even have an ao3 account to look through my history, so any help would be appreciated. I don't remember much, but it was a fic where wwx survived the siege. The most glaring memory I have is that when wwx was trying to destroy the seal it broke and pieces embedded itself in his hand. And I think it refused to heal over and he had to do an array to keep it in check.

8. Hello, everyone! I'm looking for a fic where the setting is the Cloud Recesses study arc and it was A/B/O dynamics. In this fic, LWJ had already presented as an alpha; however, WWX hadn't presented yet, but everyone (including him) thought he was going to present as an alpha. Then, LWJ looks for a way to change WWX's “path”. He starts to scent WWX a lot (for months I think), and WWX ends up presenting as an omega. When WWX realizes why this happened, he doesn't get mad. Rec Notes: This one is between BluBallz and Our Mojo and does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s 3000 words of playful smut but there is some emotion in there too, with even a twinge of angst at the end.

Rating: Explicit Status: Complete Word Count: 22,921 (1 chapter) Author’s Summary: Having a sex life with Lucifer is... complicated. (Basically, Chloe and Lucifer figuring out their sexual dynamic in a post-S4, established relationship sort of situation.)

Rec Notes: This may be a long one to get through (nearly 23,000 words is a lot for a single chapter) but it’s definitely worth it. It’s a very realistic look on how someone would find it intimidating to be with someone as experienced as Lucifer, and captures Chloe’s insecurities well. It also depicts a very healthy relationship between Chloe and Lucifer, shown by things such as Chloe’s willingness to try new things and Lucifer’s acceptance of Chloe’s limits.

Rating: Explicit Status: Complete Word Count: 5,843 (1 chapter) Author’s Summary: Chloe didn't intend to take up Lucifer's invitation to Lux's annual masquerade party, but with Trixie at Dan's and the house a little bit too quiet, she changes her mind at the last minute.

Rec Notes: This is set in early Season 3 and is a good fic for those who like it when Chloe lets her hair down and joins Lucifer at Lux. But what makes this fic special is the ending; after the playfulness of the majority of the fic, the sudden bit of angst really hit hard.

Now, back home after her disastrous bachelorette party, Chloe considers the answer if she'd been asked to write down 100 things she loved about Lucifer instead.

Rec Notes: This is a great fic in which drunk!Chloe tries to convince herself that she is in love with Pierce, and instead proves that she is in love with Lucifer. And don't forget to check out the sequel where Lucifer gets to read the list.

Rec Notes: This fun little drabble is a great way to celebrate 10,000 Ao3 fics for the Lucifer fandom. And I can absolutely see Lucifer having this reaction to fanfic. (Don't worry, it’s all in-universe and doesn’t lean too hard into the meta-ness of it all.)

Love Across The Multiverse! It's always fascinated me because it's this cracktastic premise with emotional seriousness layered throughout it: how did this story come about (and what else would you like to say about it? :D)

That one was fun! It was for Cap-IM Bingo. I had the square "aliens made them do it," and it was really stumping me, because when I thought about Marvel Comics, I couldn't really think of any aliens who would want to make anyone have sex. Sure, there are Skrull invasion plotlines every few years, but mostly the aliens just want to... kill them and take over the Earth. And I would have felt a little guilty making up aliens in this situation because for me one of the fun things about writing in a canon with so much canon is being able to find the perfect detail and the person who has also read That One Comic is going to be so excited because they know what's coming before anyone else does.

Anyway, then the Cap-IM IRC channel (this was back when they, uh, existed) pointed out that Mojoworld would totally make people have sex if they could make a reality TV show out of it, which is not exactly canon (mostly they're into making people fight each other), but it seemed plausible to me. So, yeah. Mojo makes them do it!

This then gave rise to a separate plotting problem, which was the "making them do it" part. The dub-con element, as it were. And I couldn't really get this to work for 616 Steve/Tony because they didn't seem like characters who would dubcon each other, by which I mean that if aliens made them have sex they would be All Over That. Gosh, Cap! The aliens want us to fuck? That's won-- terrible. How dare they. But I guess, you know. If we have to. For the mission. It wouldn't really be... a hardship, actually. You will note the epilogue where I brought 616 Steve/Tony in and they are totally in favor of that.

So obviously if they're completely into it from the get-go, the narrative wouldn't really have the same kind of charge. So I thought about it and decided that the version of canon where they might just need... a little push... would be Ults. (Probably it would work with MCU but I don't really write MCU; I'm sad that Alestar never finished the MCU remix of this because it was so great.) Apparently Mojo also exists in Ults but I think as a human; this is why I made Tony say he knows a guy with that name.

So to kind of lampshade everything I made it a plot where Mojoworld fucked up the universe numbers and wanted 616 but got 1610. Easy mistake, really. (The reason they couldn't have had 616 anyway is that at that point in 616, Steve was dead, post-Civil War. So, y'know, any Captain America will do.)

Anyway, yeah, so this is a story where Ults Steve figures out he's queer when aliens make him have sex with Tony. Definitely a thing that really happens to real people. We can all relate to this. I basically wanted to space it out and ramp up the UST and take him on a journey from "I am not going to do this" to "actually this is amazing."

I just really like to take wacky premises and play them completely seriously. It's probably one of my favorite things about fanfic. They may be starring in alien porn but all the feelings are real because there's no reason the feelings shouldn't be real. It's very Comics. Sometimes you are reccing people comics and you realize you're saying things like "this is a great comic where Tony finally deals with his feelings about his father because he's in hell and his father is a demon and he's fighting him while the devil sits there watching and eating popcorn." So why not just take the feelings seriously? Make Steve feel vulnerable!

As a writing tip, I would definitely not recommend writing a sex scene where one character is in another room listening to the other character jerk off for the camera because I was like "oh my God, I only get one sense to work with for this entire sex scene, and it's not even, like, a phone sex scene so they're not interacting in any way, this is a terrible challenge" and I did not actually realize what I was letting myself in for. It's difficult.

2) What fandoms do you write for and do you have a particular favourite if you write for more than one?

So, I’ve written for The X-Files, Supernatural, and Harry Potter. I currently only write for Harry Potter. I would say Harry Potter has always been the most fun.

8) Where do you take your inspiration from?

Random shit. Brontide came to me because I was browsing the HPFanfiction subreddit looking for a story suggestion and someone asked for a story where Harry was addicted to Felix. Only one unfinished dimensional time travel story was listed. It idea sparked me to write my own version. Entombed came to me because I was rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer where Buffy was buried alive. I knew I wanted to bury Ginny alive. As I stated in the author’s notes of last Kalopsia chapter, I drew inspiration from the Djinn storyline in Supernatural. I write about things I know, too. I have young kids at home so I like writing the Potter children as young because I can mimic their mannerisms in my writing. I’ve even asked my kids to say certain words to emulate their speech pattern in my writing if I’m writing that age group.

14) How did you come up with the title for the XXX? You can ask about multiple stories.

I HATE coming up with titles. My newest trend has been to literally Google “unique words”. There are a ton of Pinterest accounts who make fancy word and definition pictures. I scroll through all these little unique words and pick out ones I think fit a story. Sometimes I Google a unique word for BLANK and see if I can get a cool version of that name. @breaniebree actually helped me with Entombed.

18) Do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?

Sadly, I would put Abditory in this category. Never say never though. I think about it from time to time. Honestly, I abandoned it due to such a negative response I was receiving and the lack of positive response. I became discouraged. It wasn’t even negative response due to my writing, it was literally a bunch of “why would you waste your time writing a story about the biggest plot hole in the books? JKR butchered the whole SK storyline and it’s unbearable to read.” So, basically, my reviews and PMs were filled with JKR hate over that plot point in the books. They heavily outweighed the positive reviews I received. Honestly, I think that’s why a bulk of stories get abandoned - lack of positive reviews or enthusiasm for a story. If I didn’t get so many great reviews for my stories, I don’t know if I’d be able to finish them or continuing writing new ones. Fanfiction is free, (as it should be) but it’s a lot of time and hard work. A little appreciation goes a LONG way. So, my advice, review everything you love reading and encourage writers to keep writing. I always say in my authors notes that reviews make me want to write and inspire me. That’s the truth. The moment I stop getting reviews will probably be the time I take a writing break again.

21) Tell me about another writer(s) who you admire? What is it about them that you admire?

@breaniebree. I mean she’s dedicated years to a single story with so many plot lines and characters that I’m amazed she did it. She’s a fantastic writer, and I definitely consider her my writing BFF. I feel like I’ve learned a lot from her and enjoy talking about writing with her so much. I’m so glad we’ve become friends.

24) How do you feel about writing smutty scenes?

Horrified. Anytime I get a little steamy in my stories, it goes immediately to @breaniebree who usually adds way too much smut and then I cut it down to still be somewhat PG-13 in order to appeal to a wider audience.

29) Do you have a story that you feel doesn’t get as much love as you’d like?

I feel like Kalopsia isn’t getting as much love as my other stories. I’m way behind in my normal review count per chapter. I wonder if it’s just the confusing storyline or if it’s just not as fun to read? But I was definitely worried it wouldn’t get the love I thought it deserved when I started writing it and it’s lived up to that expectation.

30) In contrast to 29, is there a story which gets lots of love which you kinda eye roll at?

Cronus Rising. People still recommend it occasionally and I still get random reviews. I’m like, “why????” Its horribly written and a stupid plot line. I literally was getting back into writing after not writing for a good five years, so it’s abysmal. I’ve often wanted to rage delete it.

33) What’s the biggest compliment you’ve gotten?

When someone tells me I should write an original novel and they’d buy the hell out of it. I do have some original novel ideas floating around (one I’ve been writing since I was like 15), but crippling fear of rejection from publishers have stopped me from ever actually finish an original novel.

34) What’s the harshest criticism you’ve gotten?

I got some criticism in Brontide for having drama for drama’s sake with no real purpose or goal for said drama. I felt my drama served a purpose, drove the story along, and I add a lot of fluffy and cute family moments. I feel like in real life, when you to your loved one is going through sometime, it feels like nonstop drama and bad news and like a dark cloud just follows you. I wanted to emulate that in real life. So Harry’s POV was often drab because HE was the one going through something horrific and it was all doom and gloom for him.

44) What is the last line you wrote?

“You never think I listen to your ramblings, but it’s kind of hard to block out, mate.”

51) From one to five stars, how would you rate your writing? (No downplaying yourself!)

Um... I’d say a 3. I think I have some good and unique plots for stories but sometimes I struggle on how to execute those on paper effectively. I struggle with descriptions, action, and showing rather than telling. But I do think I’m good at dialogue and capturing a character’s personality. So, 3.

62) Tell us about a WIP you’re excited about.

A lot! I have a Teddy/Victoire stalker story in the works that I’m excited about. I have (this is going to sound weird) but an outsider rom-com planned where Ron/Hermione breakup right before Hinny’s wedding and Hinny struggles to get them back together before the big day. I have a Potter family vacation fluff/comedy story planned. I have a game night one-shot planned. I have a short story about Luna’s wedding. So many that I want to write and don’t know which one to write first!!

76) Is there anything you’ve wanted to write, but you’ve been too scared to try?

I’d say no. I’ve always tried to write my ideas down. Some I’ve never finished because inspiration peters off and some I plan on finishing once my newest big project is done.

I don’t understand why people don’t ship Harry/Ginny more. I don’t understand the Harry/Daphne obsessions (like just why???) or the Harry/Hermione ship at all. I always see people asking for story recommendation and they specific say “no Harry/Ginny”. They are literally perfect for one another and they are soulmates.

I obsess over them. I analyze them. I may get bummed out and not write for a few days. If you don’t like what I write, then don’t read or review. It’s a hobby. I do this for free. I’m not asking you to critique me. Give me a nice review or ask me a question, but don’t be cruel or mean because you can hide behind a keyboard and be a bully to make yourself feel superior.

98) If you had to give up either snacks and drinks during writing sessions, or music, which would you find more difficult to say goodbye to and why?

Music. I grew up with three older brothers. My house was always rowdy and loud and obnoxious. I need it to be loud. I can’t stand the silence or focus when it’s silent. I need music to help me think and write. When I’m home alone, I always turn on the TV or music, because I can’t stand when it’s silent. I think I’d go insane.

3. Have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?

lmao yeah. It’s petty, but honestly, people’s personal morals really bleed through into their fandom opinions, and I’m not willing to put up with any unnecessary hate, especially in environments that are supposed to be fun. I’ve even blocked a few people. In the ppg fandom specifically, I’ve blocked a person who, I guess, thought it was necessary to try to gate-keep with racist/sexist/etc. terminology and ideologies, and I truly don’t have time for that 🤷‍♀️ (a lot of people probs know who I’m vaguing, but if you don’t, you’re lucky)

I can’t say I’ve ever unfollowed anyone for any innocent/not-in-conflict-with-my-morals fandom opinions. Usually, if I don’t agree with something, I just keep scrolling because lol whatever. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion.

6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?*

I went into this fandom without having too many preferences, so I didn’t have a pairing that I’ve previously hated!

I guess I could say that while I never really hated them, the color-mixing and color-clashing ships weren’t ever on my radar until I came across the fandom content. Now, I really like them! Particularly, Brick and Bubbles!

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?*

Before anyone gets pissed off at me, before you get into my answer for this question, I’d like to really stress that you’ve got to go into it with absolutely zero fanon context. Like, erase all your headcanons from your mind. I’m dead serious. Because I literally DO NOT get why ANY rrbxppg ship would realistically work ever.

Okay, canonically, these six little funky science experiments were dead set on ending each other. The boys were absolutely horrible to the girls. And the girls literally KILL the boys. I know in fairytale romances, nothing stops love, but bruh, it’s hard to come back from murder 😂 And yeah, I know Clipsville showed the girls and the boys together as older teenagers, and they weren’t trying to kill each other, but that was an obvious gag. In the documentary, it was revealed that that particular “clip” was made because a bunch of people wanted the boys and girls to interact again, and CN gave into the demand. (also, lol I know it super embarrassing, but I did watch the documentary. I just really like Craig McCracken) I just don’t think that realistically a canon pairing between the two sets of triplets would ever be considered a healthy relationship. 

Also, ethically, I just—okay listen, I go back and forth with this allllll the time, but the ppgxrrb ships make me confront the “Would I sleep with my clone?” question way too often. Depending on my self-esteem, the answer changes each time. Like sometimes I’m like fuck yeah I would! Other times I’m like, ew, no, I’d have to consider my clone as a twin! I know counterparts aren’t technically clones, BUT the boys really do come across as identical to the girls in the show. The only difference really is their moral alignment (I’m nixing any gender argument). So, I’m like, omg, can I honestly pair these six together in any way??? Are they too close to each other genetically in some sense for this to be morally right??? Like if you ship Brick and Buttercup together, would that just essentially be shipping Brick and Butch/Blossom and Buttercup together in some messed up way??? Is Brick just Blossom, and Blossom just Brick?? Is it better just to ship color-matching instead of mixing???  

On top of all of that, wouldn’t the boys and girls be pseudo cousins since Mojo was the Professor’s lab monkey? Technically, in canon, Mojo ends up being both sets of triplets “creator,” so could the rrb and the ppg be considered siblings of some sort? Some of you are probably like, wow, calm down. Stop thinking about it. They’re science experiments. It’s not so deep. Which I get, but I can’t stop, so let me hit you with something ten times worse: should the girls (or the boys) actually be considered biological siblings? Does sugar, spice, and everything nice make you genetically related? Nothing put in the stirring pot was organic—just a bunch of chemicals. If you ship the boys and girls together this could be a good thing! BUT, but, could some sick fuck use this information to somehow justify shipping siblings (ppgxppg or rrbxrrb) together??? This is a literal nightmare to think about!!

All in all, I can’t think about these pairings too much without getting caught up in the logistics of their existence even if they’re fictional lmaoooo! If it wasn’t for the fandom, I wouldn’t ship them together at all. I just think it’s amazing that the ships took off like they did lol, because their literal (fictional) existence is just one giant mind fuck for me. Anyway, I ship them at the end of the day, but tbh I do it with a bit of a guilty conscience. Is it morally correct to ship clone-like counterparts? Or should counterparts be treated like twins? Does it even fucking matter at the end of the day, it’s just fiction? I don’t know the right answer. But I do know the pairings don’t make sense. 

Aside from the ppgxrrb, I don’t think there are many other BIG fandom wide pairings. Still, I just want to say that I don’t get why people ship Ace and Buttercup together. The pairing sounds off a few major alarms in my head for obvious reasons. There’s also a bunch of crack ships that involve crossovers with other cartoons. Generally, I don’t mind them, but it seems popular to ship Aku (from Samurai Jack) and Blossom together. And I’m real sorry to those devoted shippers, but again I do NOT get it. I see a lot of romantic fan art depicting romantic situations with Blossom still drawn as a child, and like I get Aku is an immortal demon, so “age is just a number,” but again, BIG ALARMS go off in my head.

5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?*

🙃 🙃 Kind of don’t want to answer this, but I will anyway because only a few people actually read my blog lolol, so lol, yep! And it’s the reds. Don’t shoot me lol. When I was in middle school, I got into this fandom, forgot about it, and then came back when I was hit by a round of nostalgia. I’m finishing up college now, and I can confidentially say that the fanon content for the reds hasn’t changed one bit. Or the demand for it.

I tended to find that a lot of red content follows many archetypes that I’m just not into. Their stories can get a real cringey, real fast. Blossom is always written like this “perfect, except she’s not (but she really is)” character. Like she’s the girl you WISH you could be, but she’s also going through a shit ton of stuff that no person IRL would be able to handle without having a mental breakdown. And sometimes, in some stories, Blossom does have a mental breakdown, but in a sexy way, so she’s still perfect. Generally, there’s still something problematic about Blossom that makes it easy for a reader to relate to her on some level, unlike the way people write Bubbles. And then there’s Brick, who’s broody, hyper-possessive or jealous, and hot figuratively and literally (gotta love the fire/ice trope). He’s the only boy—no! Wait!—the only person who could ever possibly outwit Blossom, and he is just so undeniably attracted to Blossom. They’re the smart power couple that should honestly just hook-up in Chapter One to save everybody time, but they don’t. Nah, they’ve got to survive at least two love triangles before they even consider admitting they’re attracted to each other.  

And don’t get me wrong, none of that’s bad, but there are a million fanfics that go through the same song and dance with these two. And it’s kind of easy to tell when someone’s hardcore projecting onto Blossom because the type of person they’re personally attracted to is the way they write Brick. And I’m not knocking anyone self-projecting onto characters, sometimes people got to do that to give themselves a fun mental break, but bro, I don’t want to read about it. For one, smart broody assholes aren’t my type. Maybe when I was in middle school, but not anymore. And two, it’s just not interesting to me, which is a real shame since the reds are a majority of the fanon content.

Maybe if I found more red stories where the plot isn’t character-driven but plot-driven, so I see the romance between these two characters in a context where it’s not the main focus of the story, it would solve my issue with the pairing. I haven’t found many fics like that, though.

I can’t really think of any reds fic where I’m like ey, this aint bad unless it has a “major character death” tag attached to it lmao (which are always plot driven stories). However, in all honesty, since I’ve stayed away from red content for a while now, I don’t know the current state of things. Maybe there’s been a load more development for these two, or people have broken away from the same plotlines, but I’m too busy to check. I do browse people’s fic rec lists from time to time, but it sort of feels like everyone just puts the same fics on their lists and moves on.

And before someone’s like, “well, you can say all this about the greens or the blues,” just know I’m fully aware. The greens make me cringe too because there’s a shit ton of possessive and abusive storylines filling their story tags. And what makes me super uncomfortable is how people make Buttercup hit Butch or call him derogatory names, oftentimes unprompted. I don’t know why people make Buttercup such an unlikeable and overly aggressive person. I also don’t get why they make Butch some perverted idiot, but to each their own, I guess? Still, I see these green-character patterns most often in red-focused stories, which is another reason why I avoid them. I’ve found a lot of green-focused content that strays from the abusive tropes I try to avoid. Considerably less than I’d like, but the greens are typically the b-plot pairing, so that’s to be expected. Personally, I’d really like to see more content with the greens finding some kind of inner peace, and recently, I’ve seen a few fics that have tried to tackle this concept.

And lol, if you’ve read some of my posts before, you already know that I think the blues are an underdeveloped fanon pairing. The fandom can’t ruin that pairing for me because it never does anything substantial with it.  

Anyway, at the end of the day, I’m just personally not into the way the reds are popularly written, but I get why people are and that’s good with me.

You say that Jenroses fic is palatable to Wangxian shippers but this is a heads up to Wangxian only shippers-it’s Really NOT. No way would LWJ ever agree to an arrangement like THAT. Read only if you like reading Wangxian far from canonical characterization.

Ah, sweetie. I know this feeling well, to get invested in a story and then feel betrayed by the author (or, in this case, the rec). I know that can be a gut-punch, especially if you're unprepared, and I'm sorry you are upset and felt that your trust was abused. I will add a 'ymmv' note to the rec, but it is probably worth noting to yourself that my boundaries don't match yours in this arena, and be cautious approaching future recs where I say something similar.

I only rec my own opinion -- which, in this case, was, 'As a hardcore wangixan shipper, I found this [relationship] to be very organic and palatable'. Of course other people will feel differently, on a huge spectrum, which is the glory and risk of any creative work. You can only hope to find someone whose opinion seems to flow with your own when looking for guidance or recommendations, and there are bound to be a few false steps.

I was actually thinking about this last night, with respect to works I favorite. It's incredibly random. When I was first starting this blog, I considered never noting a work as #favorite because the judgement on that is so personal, and depends on what's happening in my life at that time, whether or not I get interrupted, whether it's early or late in the day, whether or not my meds are working. Just. I try to never overthink it, or I'd be paralyzed, especially over making authors feel bad that one work was ❤️'d and another was not, and wondering why. It's so esoteric. It depends on whether or not it's the trope I'm craving at the moment, or whether I'm in the mood for humor vs. angst, and which way the stars are aligned, ya know?

I read one work at the time the Capitol was stormed this January, and it was excellent, I know, but I was too distraught to even consider writing a rec, and now it's languishing in a private bookmark with a 'please read again when you're in a good mood'. These things happen often!

So this is the burden of running a rec blog. Sometimes your opinion is going to be different from other people's, and that can be hard on the reccer, the reader AND the author. And someone's feelings might get dragged through the mud (in this case, yours).

I will add the note, and hope to make it clear for future readers that they should check their own boundaries before diving in. And meanwhile, take care of yourself, and here is a hug.

first creation and most recent creation of 2020: okay so listen... I mainly got into BTS just for the sake of writing fics like my old 13 year old did with 1D, it was around this time of the year when I was still a baby ARMY so pls don’t come for me, it’s Absolutely Smitten a fic that was requested and back when i (foolishly) thought I would never write other than fluff. The most recent is Teen Idle, part of my ongoing Electra Heart series (yes, from Marina the singer bc its funny shes Marina, I’m Marina I’ll shut up now) it somehow got lost in the tags due to the algorithm but hey, it’s there.

one of your favorite creations from 2020: If you are familiar with my writing I think you can guess this one, it’s actually a series, 대취타 (DAECHWITA) (which yeah I may or may not continue with drabbles and ask my characters you just wait till I get my writer mojo back), but it just means so much for me, I actually loved it, had fun with it, writing it was therapeutic and I also adored the response to it.

a creation you’re really proud of:  Imma keep bringing it up. 대취타 (DAECHWITA) but also Kids in the Dark, idk how that came to be bc I was crying the whole time writing it, I just let all of my feelings out on that one.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Mr. Mojo and I watched The Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie last week (it’s only $4 on VUDU), mostly because I’d seen smatterings of fanfic for it over on AO3 and wanted to check it out and DAMN was it a surprise!

It’s got a pretty terrible rating (67% on Rotten Tomatoes), but we loved every minute of it!  It’s directed by Guy Ritchie (who did the RDJ Sherlock Holmes) and stars Henry Cavill (from Superman) so there was plenty of eye candy (the Illya actor is very pretty, too, and also 6′5″ to feed my height kink).  The gorgeous and confident ladies in it kicked ass on many levels, the men were great (and also pretty) it had one of the most unique car chase sequences I’ve ever seen, the whole film was a visual feast (have you seen Delicatessen?  It reminded me of that in that every scene was just a stunning and artful composition, I mean, the International jet-set 1960′s scene was pretty colorful.)  The plot was roundly satisfying.

Yeah.  I loved it.  And now I get to read some fics!  (Here are some of my recs from my AO3 bookmarks.)  Does anyone have more recs for me?  Put it in the comments....
