I've been playing through Earthbound for the first time recently I'm having a lot of fun with it. The skyrunner sequences are a standout bit in my brain for some reason, so I decided to try drawing one of them.
In general I really like Dusty Dunes desert also, the music is great and the monkey dungeon is 'memorable', to sat the least lmao. I might draw more Earthbound stuff, we'll see.
#monkey dungeon is a work of art#and it also pisses me off immensely#i fuckin love the skyrunner music#it's like my top 3 tracks in the game#earthbound#mother 2#jeff#jeff andonuts#dusty dune#desert#sketch#doodle#bakesart

Kim Dokja with a Sung Jinwoo!Reader and their supporting constellation is Six-Eared Macaque

BAKHT ⁺ ✦ KIM DOKJA
"An existence as lonely as yours... chance has not been kind to you, it seems." It was neither choice nor good fortune that flung you into the rift that divided worlds: suspended in a limbo not of your own making, in a world with no dungeons like yours but 'scenarios' instead. Only the Story reaching its [◼◼◼] and you protecting the protagonist would guarantee your return, but how were you supposed to do that when the 'protagonist' you were meant to protect kept dying? honestly it's been a while since I read both solo levelling and orv so the plot is a bit hazy. I told myself to focus more on the actual interaction so it wouldn't snowball into storybuilding like the rest of my works... but alas... honestly this ask was extremely interesting like I've never read journey to the west but a sung jinwoo/six eared macaque collab??? damn me when I focus on tense first encounters rather than the lovey dovey aspect of relationships.. jokes aside it does get somewhat soft at the very end fun fact bakht refers to fortune in arabic, or rather finding luck in 'chance'; which unfortunately our reader doesn't seem to have a lot of... art by @ 1L9l2Aa8UCL0IGJ (blackbox) on x! pairing: kim dokja + sung jinwoo gn reader warnings: canon typical danger, mentions of death, also they're not really on the best of terms initially?? quite graphic depictions of blood wc: 2.7k
ORV MASTERLIST
MASTERLIST ・゜・NAVIGATION
Tonight, the wind carried only premonition in its whispers. It started like all the stories did—the ones that reached your ears, at least. Beginning as a gentle breeze, the songs twining past and future turned coarse as a gale once they encountered the pixelated appendages that seemed to have a life of their own: six downy auricles that were unable to decide whether to stay in the virtual realm or materialise themselves.
Most of the time, they hid in the umbrous kingdom—much like the rest of your shadows. When you donned the façade of the humans from Planetary System 8612, the tales you could eavesdrop on were mere gossip slinking in from the future and the bygone past—tidbits of paltry information that were perhaps divine retribution for not proudly donning the Six-Eared Macaque’s ‘crown’, as he seemed to put it.
But tonight was different. Tonight, the mellifluous litany of your flute was sharper than usual as you idled the time away. Tonight, with only the vast night shielding you and the countless shadows skulking on the rooftop, their dance appeared wilder. There was frenzy in the air, and prophecy tainting the cold, canorous wind.
It tasted acerbic.
‘Danger… horizon…. Dokja….’
The frequency soured the melody that brushed past the fur of your six-ears, and they flicked, irritably.
[The Fake Monkey King warns of something afoot.]
“I know,” you bitterly commented. Something was always afoot when it came to this world in which you did not belong. Falling past the veil separating a dungeon from nothingness wasn’t meant to happen. Your system subsequently trapping you in this limbo until you reached [◼◼◼◼◼], too, wasn’t meant to happen either. Let the Story run its course and protect its ‘protagonist’, and this dimension will naturally collapse just enough that you’ll fall through back into yours.
Kim Dokja, you’d repeated like a mantra while you lost your mind—over and over while your system glitched and protested in this limbo. Over and over, while he died and died and died some more. You’d bought and earned and fought for various potions, weapons and clothes to help him with his scenarios—leaving them in his vicinity where you knew he’d stumble across them—but it was all so fucking futile.
Each time, he returned past the veil; each time, you sank into a deeper mire of restriction. You hadn’t spoken to another soul in months: imprisoned in the very shadows you controlled. It wasn’t as bad, initially: you could still talk to people uninvolved in the ‘Story’, the poor souls dubbed as extras—so long as you didn’t cause any ripples with your actions. If Dokja was accounted for through both the soldiers in his shadow, and the whispers that reached the six ears that fanned out behind your head, it would be fine.
‘Hazard… kilometre north of Dokja’s camp….’
A kilometre. You’d be quiet. You always were.
Dokja. Dokja. Dokja. Your face soured as you exchanged places with Beru: ready to silently act as his guardian shadow, though if he was determined to sacrifice himself… Both of you would pay a price.
The silence in the city was razor-sharp and just as deadly, to the point you could hear the ionic buzz of your summoned demonic knives. Their ozonic scent bitterly filled your mouth, which only amplified the acerbic profanities mingling on your tongue as you glanced around for the danger. What danger? You’d be damned before you were sent back to that empty desert to reflect your wrongdoings. There was no chance to gain anything there—just endless time, chipping your sanity away and stirring up derision for the one who couldn’t solve anything without dying.
Because in the end, both of you would pay the price, and he didn’t even know it. He became a constellation, while you were shackled to a prison that was never of your own making.
Examining the wreck of this urban landscape that felt too much like the Seoul you knew, you came to the abrupt conclusion that there was nothing. Even when your six-ears flicked this way and that, it was too silent. Not a whisper, nor any trace of danger lingered in this space; such an occurrence was nigh-impossible in the scenario-laden dome of this city.
[The Prisoner of the G◼◼◼en Headband expres◼◼◼◼ his mistrust.]
Sun Wukong. A flash of hatred that was not your own wracked your body, complete with a burning envy and something far more insidious than anything you’d ever experienced,
Crackling messages began interfering with your system screen. You’d only seen this once—when you accidentally intruded on the fringes of the ‘Star Stream’ as an ‘unauthorised one’. An anomaly if you ever saw one.
“There’s nothing,” you muttered callously, scraping the tip of your blade against concrete ruins. If it had been a false alarm, then it was time to leave before you risked paying the penalty. Your job was simple—keep watch of the ‘protagonist’ from the shadows, and make his life somewhat easier.
[A nameless constellation argues that advertisements are simply a part of life, and that it’s not a big deal to build suspense.]
That’s weird. The messages were getting clearer, but the warning signs that typically appeared in the system windows weren’t there.
Your own supporting constellation was far too quiet as you sheathed your knife in the shadow dimension—the darkness cradled the weapon softly before it vanished, though the familiar whish could not soothe the unease that distorted your mind. Never had the six-ears failed to pinpoint hazards, as close to omniscient that they were.
“Got you,” something—someone—whispered from afar, the moment you stepped on the next broken slab of pavement and triggered a tripwire. A paltry toy, golden string that was incandescent in this darkened city, wrapped tightly around your body; right before you were shoved against a concrete wall. “You’re not the only one to see the ‘outcome’.”
Stand down, Igris, you commanded as the stranger continued to press into you; you could sense the turbulent shadows growing even more agitated at your position, though all of them could feel the ease with which you could’ve snapped out of the rope that was no more than a thread. The stream was eerily silent, while the glassy window only you could see kept its cold azure colour—nothing like the glaring scarlet that informed you of your penalty.
Who is this?
In the darkness, you made out the shape of a mouth pressed into a thin line. Dark hair partially swept over the stranger’s eyes, while a long white coat draped itself over his shoulders. But it wasn’t the garb, nor was it the features that alerted you of just who this was.
It was the umbrous cloud of his soul, the very one you’d been tracking all these weeks.
“Kim Dokja,” you greeted, half-placidly, half in intrigue. If he could bend the rules of life and death to suit him, you supposed that bending some more rules wouldn’t hurt. The interest was quickly replaced by irritation—for this was the very charge that had continuously shackled you to the in-betweens of the Seoul dome. Not quite a human from this planet, nor a monster—just an abominable anomaly that didn’t belong in this Story’ at all. “I wasn’t expecting this.”
There was a polite smile on your face, but he only scoffed in disbelief. “What the hell are you playing at? Who are you? You think leaving all those materials for me to find will somehow increase your chances to survive? Why are you doing this?”
Incredulity laced each syllable. The Ugliest King stared hard at the face of the Shadow Monarch, though he didn’t know it.
You sympathised, you really did. Having someone trail after you (though he hadn’t mentioned your shadows—did he even notice them?) and leave you useful items might have been convenient to some, but chronic overthinkers (as Beru had reported to you from his shade) wouldn’t see it as such.
But it wasn’t like you had a choice not to, either.
“I just want to get back home.” For the first time, there was a hint of the welling annoyance that seeped through the cracks in your courteous expression: in your grinding molars, in the slight squint of your eyes. Babysitting this guy should have never been part of your job.
Don’t affect the story.
You pressed your lips together to avoid the tide of complaints that swept in. Why do you keep dying? Do you know how much it sucks whenever you do? Why the fuck was I put on babysitting duty?
“Just take the things,” you gritted out instead; to which a sharp blade stung the side of your neck. Quick, but not quick enough to pose a true threat to you. “They were annoying to farm, you know that?”
“I never asked for them, nor do I need them to reach where I want to be. You were never in the original— I can’t exactly trust you now, can I?” he scowled—more ill-tempered than Beru had included in his periodic reports. In a mere second, you surged: as fluid and fast as quicksilver, slamming the guy you’d grown to abhor into the cold, harsh asphalt. There was no apology dripping from your lips this time, only a snarling, bloodied grit of teeth when the penalty began etching into your skin as a direct consequence of laying hands on the ‘untouchable’ protagonist.
Sensing your distress, the six-ears materialised around your face—like they were countering the drip-drip of sanguine that slinked from your nose and onto the shirt of the man beneath you. You watched as you sullied the protagonist you were forced to stay away from—tainted in a way that was sure to finally end you. His dark eyes, too, traced the motion of each crimson rivulet: chest rising and falling desperately as he felt the very real, razor-sharp edge of his own knife lightly against his jugular.
“Listen, I never asked for this either,” you hissed. “Believe it or not, I too want you to reach the conclusion of this shitshow so I can get back home. You need to stay alive for that. I’ll wait.”
The pressure in your head intensified.
“I don’t know how you got past the restrictions on me—” Your grip on his shirt loosened as carmine began seeping into the system window. “—but I can’t stay here any longer without repercussions. Neither can I interfere with the story nor escape this hell—” Dark spots began floating in your vision, and the blade sliced into the concrete a hair's breadth away from his neck with a low-resonating chime. Maybe this was your only chance to make your job easier, without the loss of sanity that came with rule-breaking. “—but if you can’t trust me, trust that your accomplishment of your goal will allow me to get back to my own world as a result.”
“Wait–” Your body swayed as you stood, feeling the familiar frequency of the Stream boot up against the fine down of the six-ears. I don’t have time, you wanted to say, but iron was beginning to leave your lips too.
[The Prisoner of the Golden Headband complains loudly that fraternising with the enemy is a horribly stupid move, pulling out his hair.]
[The Demon-like Judge of Fire is unsure of this development, and would like to be filled in on this stranger’s connection with the Prisoner of the Golden Headband..]
The Star Stream was… clear. Not filled with static like it had been before, but cogent enough that you could observe each message coherently.
[The Star Stream has its eyes on you.]
A terrible foreboding surfaced, while your chest constricted with the sudden onslaught of red that assaulted your eyes—a cacophony of warning signs, all targeted at you.
“What is that?” A hand that wasn’t yours reached for the crimson glow, and you jolted as the cerise shattered: reverting back to the familiar blue interface. The ache in your head, too, vanished—yet the buildup of fatigue was still present in your hazy mind. Though, the only thing you could register was the change in his voice as he observed the screen, an inkling of understanding as he watched the characters fade from existence:
Protect the ‘protagonist’ Kim Dokja. Let the Story run its course, and you will be able to return to your home world.
{The Fourth Wall quietly observes the remnants of its meal.}
Gone, in a wave of his hand. That same hand, now held out to you as if it hadn’t just erased weeks’ worth of strain from your body: long, deft fingers reaching out to you. You could only stare as the world grew dim around you, as a faint voice brushed past the soft fur of your six-ears.
‘Error… error… due to unprecedented actions ◼◼◼◼ taken by the protagonist, the system has now… updated to provide for a deuteragonist model… consi◼◼der standby… updating… updating… ◼◼◼◼◼◼ ◼◼◼◼ objective updated… reach the [◼◼◼◼] alongside deuteragonist Kim Dokja to catalyse homecoming.’
“What the hell… did you do?” you slurred. The misguided loathing towards him had dissipated into a tumultuous state of frenzy; you could feel the shadows within stir with the agitation of your mind, though you fought to keep your cards at bay. Rather than the hilt of your familiar sword, you thumbed the worn edge of your flute in a last bid to stay calm.
“‘Reach the [◼◼◼◼] alongside deuteragonist Kim Dokja to catalyse homecoming’, huh?” The incredulity you felt at him repeating the words that only you ever heard was overshadowed by the bone-deep exhaustion you felt.
“Was… being honest,” you mumbled for the last time, fully expecting to feel the frigid asphalt as you collapsed and your eyes came to a close. The lingering penalties had finally taken effect, yet you didn’t quite hit the hard concrete like you anticipated. Rather, you collided against a wiry frame that, despite its initial gauntness, was far warmer than anything you’d felt in these apocalyptic weeks. “I might’ve died if I continued interfering.”
“You won’t die.” The words ghosted over your ear as he stared down at the person in his arms who’d been tracking him for weeks. They’d been a constant pain and irritated him to no end, especially with all the gifts he received that he’d never read about in TWSA; and there was nothing he hadn’t read about in TWSA save for the epilogue. “I won’t let you.”
His very headache was now slumbering in his arms, with only the ambition of going home on their mind.
What a lonely existence.
Maybe you heard him. Maybe you didn’t. All he knew was that he was crafting an epilogue that would shake this very world to its roots, and perhaps there was a small, you-sized shape cut out just for the person snoozing their little heart out. He had a feeling he had only breached the outermost layer of you; peeling back only the very dermis to reveal someone far too overpowered to compete with most of the dome.
Dokja’s thumb traced the bloody lines staining your face. You could faintly feel them; then, abruptly, the citrus smell that lingered on him grew sharper. Closer. A soft pressure applied itself to the crown of your head: fleeting, silvery. What was that?
It was everything that had been forcibly taken from you after you were brought past the void.
With something that was suspiciously close to a smile, your mind drifted away in the arms of someone who both damned you and saved you.
⁺ ✦
“If Igris and Yoo Joonghyuk fought, who would win?”
“Igris,” you answered without missing a beat. There wasn’t a hint of hesitation in your face as you opened your mouth, and it was so strong that he almost believed that your Commander could beat the true ‘protagonist’ of this world. “And if he lost, I’d win for him.”
This! This was his chance to get back at that squid bastard!

Hello Senja! I’ve been following you for a while, and I absolutely love your art style. I also do some TTTE fanart myself and have a few questions I’d love to ask you.👉🏻👈🏻It seems like you’ve been drawing TTTE for quite some time, so I’m curious—when and why did you start creating TTTE fanart? Also, I feel like TTTE fanart isn’t that popular, so how have you managed to keep going with it? I often feel discouraged because of the lack of attention,/supports,and sometimes I think about quitting fanart altogether, but I really want to keep my love for it and keep creating. (Also, I’m not very familiar with the aesthetic standards in the Western fanart community, and it’s been a bit of a barrier for me.) Do you have any advice? Thanks so much for your help!🥺
hello, anon! first of all, thank you for sticking around. looking at the archives, I’d say I started posting around may 2022! I launched this blog with my now-dusty pokemon mystery dungeon AU… I started bruhstation because I’ve been watching ttte clips to cope with the harsh high school dormitory life of 2022-2023. “wouldn’t it be silly if I made thomas gijinkas for fun lmfao” fast forward 3 years later. it doesn’t matter that ttte fanart doesn’t always make it big — I’m enjoying myself here and I’m sure the same goes for nostalgic folks coming to take a peek
as for followers… I never really chased after that high ever since I started high school? I prioritize my education first. also because I have a pretty sizeable following so worrying about followers is one of the last things I have in mind. from my observations, my blog exploded when I actively posted about casa tidmouth’s story… so that’s that. I kept wracking my brain coming up with their backstories and characterization and engaging with my inbox.
getting into your questions; what kind of arts are you making? fanarts in general? or are you making AUs? find a good balance between comedy and insightful characterization. too much comedy will make your story incoherent like “lol random humor XD”. too much tragedy will lessen the impact of serious moments in the story. yes, you are free to make whatever art you like, but once you start wanting an audience, you might have to treat your stuff with a little bit more dignity. also if you really watched tommy and the pals show you know how stupid some of these engines can be
people would often say “make art for yourself! who cares what others think?” but it’d be nice to be noticed once in a while, no? it’s very human to desire inputs and attention from others. everyone wants their work to be appreciated. I don’t know you nor the content you make, but keep improving bit by bit every day. watch lots of speedpaints. study coloring values and canvas composition. use references and try techniques you never tried before. don’t just draw characters smiling in a white void in the same 3/4th facing angle. make them interact. have beef. your circus your monkeys

Hello hello!! I love finding all of these new ttrpgs through your blog -- keep up the good work! ^^ Do you have any suggestions for ttrpgs (solo or otherwise) that are focused on selling food? Like through food trucks, taverns, stands and the like, a bit more casual?
Theme: Diners, Drive-Thrus and Dives.
Hello! I’ve managed to talk a lot about games that focus on selling things in the past, so I don’t have much that is new for you. Here’s one about Running A Store, here’s a list of Diner Games, and here’s one about Running a Tavern.
The Haunted Cafe Chronicles, by Merrigol Apothecary.
Serve customers and battle spirits in a cozy cafe. Can be played solo or with a GM, perfect for a cozy Halloween night. This is a recent game that just came out. It includes a small map with some basic locations, as well as a few cute pieces of concept art! Great for a small game with a haunted twist.
Le Systeme D, by Monkey’s Paw Games.
One of the runners just fell down the stairs and broke their ankle, and they need forks on table number seven, and the twelve-top arrived late and is eating up half the dining room while they linger over cognacs, and the customers waiting by the bar and shivering in the street are getting hungry, haunted looks in their eyes…
Le Systeme D is a Belonging Outside Belonging game about restaurant workers pulling together to debrouiller or demerder - work their way out of tough situations, relying on adaptability, inventiveness, and teamwork. I love the collaborative nature of building the restaurant, as well as communal responsibility for minor characters who show up in the scene. The atmosphere for this game is truly impeccable and I'm definitely intrigued.
The Laughing Kobold, by therabidbanana.
The Laughing Kobold is a GM-less role-playing game for one or more players where you play the owners of a struggling restaurant just trying to get by in a realm of magic and monsters. While others may live a life of adventure diving into unexplored dungeons and slaying evil dragons you would be happy just to make rent this month on your small diner.
The Laughing Kobold is based on Charge rules and the GM-less episodes are driven by the Threads of Lachesis system.
The Charge ruleset is very reminiscent of Forged in the Dark, so if you’re familiar with any FitD games, you might find some common elements here. I’m very interested in the Fate Die mechanic, which gives you a number of d6 to roll at the beginning of the session, which help you determine the story prompts of each episode arc. There’s a lot of fun tools to play around with here, so if game design is your cup of tea, I think it’s work checking out!
Also...
There is an old game jam on Itch.io called Our Little Food Jam that was run back in 2019. There might be something there that tickles your fancy!

Exactly one week ago…

…I started the Elden Ring DLC. Shadow of the Erdtree. Today I’ve finished the last major boss and completed it. All that’s left is to find any loot or face off against any other bosses or dungeons.
I have thoughts but its important to know I have platinum’d Bloodborne. I have a layer of patience with these kind of games you may not. Take my thoughts with a grain of salt, I enjoy speed and difficulty in Fromsoft games and I’m willing to put up with a lot of nonsense you may not tolerate.
I had an incredibly good time with SotE. Its bosses were showstoppers and its new weapons were genuinely unique and creative. I found some new mainstays and found some new spells to try out with other builds. I feel the Scadutree (shadow-tree) fragment system works, these fragments aren’t hidden if you’re exploring new areas they will pop up frequently. It makes it so level is irrelevant, its all about your build and the scadutree blessings.
I have more thoughts and spoilers below the cut. But this game has become a hot button in reference to its difficulty. As someone who ate up the old hunters dlc and ds3 fire fades edition I did not feel the difficulty was off kilter. Get some fragments by continuing into new areas.
What I will say is there’s a few bosses who have hitboxes that are not as tuned as we normally get from fromsoft designs. They’re the flagship of incredibly well made hitboxes and some enemies don’t have well tuned hitboxes. I will also say they repeat a gimmick too often of “you thought the boss’s attack combo was done? Wrong 4 more attacks”. The windows for punishing are pushed too small and the bosses get away with too many hits compared to your one attack you get in between. I think those are both valid criticisms.
Holy shit. I love so much of what they did in this dlc. From Midra to Messmer to Miquella every remembrance boss is a banger. This dlc has formed so many new core memories from turning the frenzied flame ending into a boss to stunningly beautiful rot saints and finger mothers.
Not to mention the level design. The specimen gallery is one of my favorite fromsoft levels of all time. Like an advanced research lab from bloodborne its a vertical tower. There are hanging statues and the hand of one seemed to be beckoning me so I took a leap, and I was correct. That was what they wanted me to think.
My build was Str Fai and I found a number of insanely fun weapons to use on ng+. The Light Greatswords are super fun to use especially with Wing Stance. The Blacksteel Hammer is crazy good at guard counters. The Greatsword of Damnation makes pvp so much fun and has the craziest tracking I’ve ever seen on a weapon art. There were also so many weapons outside my build that look crazy fun to use, from new rot incantations to intelligence twin light greatswords to a wide array of arcane based weapons.
When I discovered who the final boss was there were howler monkey sounds. Radahn was the only demigod we did not fight at full power and now we get to, just as I the player am at full power and that fight did not disappoint.
Theres so much richness to indulge in with the DLC and it absolutely rewards a curious mind. Its one of my favorite things fromsoft has released and after it marinates and I get time with it I’ll absolutely do it again.

So this might be a super weird and bizarre question, but do you have any clear references/designs for Henry’s hooded poncho in Monkey’s Paw, even just a rough sketch? I’m a big fan of all the character designs in Monkey’s Paw, but that hooded poncho really caught my eye for some reason. I’m a bored knitter and it looks super cozy (I know it’s a drawing but still lol) and once I started thinking about how to make one I couldn’t get it out of my head. Since your art was the inspiration I thought I’d ask :-) No worries if not!
thank you so much for reading/enjoying!! im so proud of all that work
I am not a knitter, so I must admit I haven't thought much about what it would actually take to make this thing. but I am such a sucker for a good poncho so I just had to throw one on the first fantasy man I saw. and I didn't have these references before today but I'm glad to have them now, so if I hecking change the length again because I'm too lazy to look at older pages when I'm sketching I can hold myself by the face and point at this lol. Here's how I've been drawing in in the dream:
BUT the dream is also my contextual excuse to draw simpler than things in their world actually are. (to spend more time Making Comic and less time falling prey to my own perfectionism) One day maybe I'll get to drawing the epilogue for this thing and I'll be drawing the fully tricked-out version for every panel Henry's on. ...buuuuuut in case that's a million years from now here's a reference set with more details! again, not a knitter, so idk how difficult it would actually be to make this thing, but the main differences are just a wider collar pinched together by two bead-loop-things and some braid and oak leaf patterns down the shoulders and arms
(headcanon lore: his momma made it for him while wondering if he'd ever make it back from where the portal took him. when she tried to throw it away an Oakvalian found it and kept it safe until he really did come home and they put in on his body while he was in the homunculus in the dungeon. so he woke up wearing it and recognized the knitting immediately)
#thank you for getting me to dig this back towards the forefront of my brain#i have some sketch pages that deserve to be finished#monkeys paw#dndads#henry oak#ask ka#me talking#kineticallyart

welcome to writing with style
This course is about style, how we analyze it, how we cultivate it. Our goal in this course is to expand our stylistic repertoires. We will do this by digging into sentences—clauses, phrases, words, and punctuation—to see how even the smallest units of writing can persuade. We’ll begin with some grammar review, not to ensure “correctness” (a word whose meaning and effects we will closely examine), but rather to understand the way sentences work rhetorically. Far from being the stuffy domain of reactionary pedants, grammar is historically related to practices of magic (hence the etymological relation between “grammar” and “glamor”). As is appropriate for magicians, we will learn an esoteric language—figures and tropes such as parataxis, hypotaxis, syntaxis, diacope, epistrophe, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, and many more. And like magicians, we’ll spend much of our time practicing, experimenting—looking at your writing, trying on different styles through repetition and imitation. Here is what I hope for you by the end of this course:
That you appreciate the difference between prescriptive and descriptive accounts of language.
That you discern how different situations call for different styles.
That you deploy grammatical and stylistic vocabulary with confidence and accuracy.
That you cultivate a rhetorically sophisticated repertoire of styles.
That you enjoy written style: that working with words gives you pleasure and delight.
course elements
The course consists of a commonplace book, several short exercises, three major assignments, and a portfolio that will include revisions and an explanatory letter. I will ask you to keep copies of all these assignments in Google Drive folders so that you can access them all at the end of the course. There is also a brief final exam on the terminology that we’ll be learning throughout the course. As we approach the major assignments, we will read examples of the genres, describe them, and apply those descriptions to your own writing. Fuller project descriptions can be found in the syllabus.

Emerging in Early Modern Europe, commonplace books were privately made and held collections of information, which would include snippets of text, phrases or words to remember, and even bits of verse. I’d like you each to keep a commonplace book. With this commonplace book, you will compile things that might become elements of your own styles. You’ll need a keen eye and an attuned ear along with scissors and glue. What turns of phrase, words, sentence, images and photographs inspire you? A notebook will be provided to this end. All that the commonplace book requires of you is the selection and collection of such stylistics elements. Additionally, you will need to develop an index system to organize and categorize entries.

Shadow And The Sunbeast
Shadowpeach Beauty And The Beast AU!
I tried giving Wukong horns and extra arms, but I didn't like how they were turning out, so I did tusks and big pointy ears. If anyone has ideas on how to make him more beasty (that are relatively easy to do) I'll redesign him.
Macaque isn't holding The Rose™, it's just a rose. It's the same color as Mac's face mask tho ;)
(The purple background has no meaning, I'm just a purple lover)
So Wukong is the beast, Macaque is Belle, the stalwart generals and other monkeys are the enchanted servants, the enchantress is Guanyin, Azure Lion is Gaston, Peng is LeFou, and Maurice's roll is take by Macaque's mom and Erlang, they co-parent and Erlang is just a hunter now.
I'm taking creative liberties and playing around with the story. And I wanted to have Xiàotiān Quǎn in this.
Here's the fic!

Video Games I Played in September 2024

I had been doing these monthly writeups on Cohost but that website is dying at the end of the month and so despite being someone who never used tumblr ardently I stumble back here blind and bedraggled. Mostly these are a way for me to tell all my discord friends what games I've been playing so for that reason I'll likely keep doing them, but who knows.
Dungeons of Sundaria – For years I said that all I wanted out of a video game was Oblivion dungeons with a loot system and enough shit to do that I could play it for 100 hours. The finger on the monkey’s paw curled and spat this game out, which is “functional” but constantly trying to shit itself. Whether it’s the wonky collision, the incredibly low difficulty punctuated by severe difficulty spikes when bosses suddenly are able to one-shot you, the poor differentiation between abilities when all of them do damage, or the fact my lizardman takes up a solid third of my screen when all my attacks require accurately tracking my reticule on an enemy; the fun never stops.
Astro Bot – The PS5 finally has one game, and it’s the $60 sequel to a free tech demo that at best is a pretty okay version of Kirby and the Forgotten Land. It lacks the serendipity of the first game and is instead satisfied with merely being incredibly polished, but the endless references to the endless teams and series killed by Sony’s greed gives it the bittersweet tenor of a high school reunion held in a graveyard. There’s a real love for Sony’s past here, but nostalgia isn’t a future.
Megaloot – What a weird little dungeon crawler. I was sad when Backpack Hero failed to congeal after early access so I’ve been jonesing since then for an inventory management game that had enough mechanics to reward actual builds but enough flexibility to not just make raw burst damage the only strategy that matters. This very much isn’t that game, as raw burst damage is very much all that matters until floor 60 where after 700+ battles there’s an enemy immune for the first three turns who does a truckload of damage. It’s a pretty transparent sledgehammer to prevent endgame viability of a strategy that works 99% of the time on every other enemy, and while roguelikes are always filled with knowledge traps that constrain builds it’s always shitty when the early game doesn’t matter and the late game only allows for certain builds.
Akimbot – Ratchet and Jank is “from the Creator of Pumpkin Jack”, which was one of the video games of all time and which I mostly played because of a friend of a friend seemed to have fun with the speedrun, and I trust his word as gospel because he and I are two of the last supplicants in the church of Vexx. Akimbot is mostly noteworthy for having four unique, powerful, and interesting guns and then only letting you carry one at a time on top of locking it behind an energy bar that slowly fills from killing enemies, forcing you to do 90% of the combat with the shitty basic weapons. It’s a baffling decision but this game is almost on the level of amateur art given how most of those involved are new to making games and there are certainly rookie errors on display.
The Plucky Squire – I really thought Gestalt: Steam and Cinder was going to take the cake this year in terms of video games that had a full suite of functional components but were strikingly less than the sum of their parts, but The Plucky Squire absolutely blew it out of the water. The aesthetic is superb, with bright 2D art and incredibly realistic 3D sections. The conceit of a storybook character hopping between environs and genres is a slam dunk for trying out different artstyles, gameplay genres, and minigames. Being able to use the very words of the storybook as objects you can manipulate is a powerful and endlessly interesting conceit. It should be as simple as just doing the things competently and the game would be solid. And yet. AND YET. You’re unable to go a single screen without an overwrought cutscene that tutorializes the next section. Mechanics come and go at random, making the game feel disconnected and shallow rather than intricate or expansive. All money is good for is combat upgrades, but combat is brainless even by 2D Zelda standards and basic enemies died just as quickly with no upgrades as with all of them (and every boss is a puzzle boss where your damage doesn’t matter). I’ve played some absolute garbage to completion but I dropped this 2/3rds of the way through after seeing the game run out of steam almost immediately.
Crypt Custodian – Speaking of taking some cliché parts but executing well, Crypt Custodian is a perfectly reasonable game that I enjoyed a reasonable amount. As far as isometric metroidvanias go it’s worse than Death’s Door and as far as its artstyle it’s not as charming as Islets or 8Doors, but the game’s fine. If you’re the sort of person who spends $20 and 10 hours to pass the time in a pleasant fashion you could do far worse.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom – What an absolute breath of fresh air. After the Link’s Awakening remake was fairly rote (and reinforced why I never liked the game much as it’s overall a regression from A Link to the Past), I was worried all they’d do with the engine was remake the Oracle games and move on. I still abhor the tilt shifting with its blurry edges and poor visual clarity, but the amount of chicanery this game lets you get up to makes me forgive it. Stack a bunch of trampolines on each other and bounce around. Throw a spider at a wall then attach to it to be lifted up like a conveyor belt as it climbs. Summon a darknut then possess an enemy so they stand gormlessly still while being hacked to death. One of the best parts of Spirit Tracks was Zelda being a spunky troublemaker who was down to cause problems, and if that’s a personality trait that she continues to retain when she’s allowed to have one then I’m wholly on board. Bring back Midna.

Perhaps someone would like to write a fic like this for Beauty and the Beast Week! Here are some ideas that are free for anyone to use:
Day 1, Wolf - blood: there's some sort of accident and Beast gets hurt even worse than from the wolves; Belle again nurses him back to health (and maybe realizes how much she cares for him as a result?)
Day 2, Bird - nest: Belle discovers how Beast makes a giant messy nest of blankets for himself when he's sick; perhaps she even gets in the nest with him for a snuggle?
Day 3, Octopus - water: I know OP asked for Belle taking care of Beast, but what about Beast taking care of Belle after she falls in the freezing water in Enchanted Christmas (instead of throwing her in the dungeon wtf)
Day 4, Monkey - tricks: Beast hates medicine, so Belle has to trick him into taking some (now I'm picturing her hiding a pill in a piece of cheese like he's a giant dog haha!)
Day 5, Snake - poison: Beast gets food poisoning 😬
Day 6, Horse - endurance: Beast tries to be strong and endure his sickness, until Belle finally forces him to rest
Most of these would work great as art prompts too!
Find more ideas for how to use the daily prompts at #inspiration.
I yearn for a sickfic during curse of belle taking care of beast Im latched onto the batb hyperfixation again XD
Welcome back to the BatB brainrot! I've been here nonstop since 1991, so I think it's safe to assume I'm never leaving.
That does sound like a nice idea for a fic! She would make a very good nurse. I headcanon that he's a big baby when he's sick, so that would be pretty funny too. Unfortunately I can't think of any fics that fit this, but maybe someone else will have some recommendations?

I PLAYED SOME MORE GAMES TODAY

Im beginning to rouse from my month of COVID fatigue and got 4 new games in today! 3/4 are from Pandasaurus games, which I’ll have some thoughts on later. They’re varying degrees of good!

One trend I’ve noticed is modern games like to saw two proven games in half and glue them together. Clank! is a dungeon crawler/deck builder. Arnak is a worker placement/deckbuilder. Eschaton is a deckbuilder/risklike. Emerge is if you played Yahtzee to play Carcassone.

In Emerge we are scientists exploring islands for wildlife for points. The goal is to make multi-tiered islands with lots of wildlife meeples on them. You do so by rolling dice and assigning them to actions on your player mat. There are also 4 goals to keep up with and research tokens you can find by making islands or spending unused dice. After 8 rounds the game is scored and the most VP’s wins. One aspect I enjoyed was the modifier tiles. Once per round you can remove/add/swap tiles around your board, this causes numbers to collect for different resources. Numbers are placed on your mat and can be spent together for different meeples or island tiles. So I could put a crab tile on 4 (as pictured) and spend dice from 2 and 4 to place crab meeples on my island. Islands score for the number of tiers times number of meeples.
Emerge is a bit tougher to recommend than most of my games here. I like it, it has some things I like, but it has some I don’t. I don’t think the tile abilities do enough to negate the variation and luck in rolls. You only get one roll, and granted I probably should have taken on at least one or two more tiles, but I didn’t feel they did enough compared to something like One Deck Dungeon. I feel for an optimization game, optimization enjoyers might get annoyed with bad rolls they get stuck with. There’s also a lack of meaningful player to player interaction. There’s racing for objectives first, obtaining research tokens first, and the four bird tokens that can be moved and stolen. I liked the idea of it, but I wanted more. I also felt the objectives asked a lot of you without offering enough reward for chasing them, I focused objectives while my bud islands, and while I scored all four objectives he still won by some 10+ points.
If you want a laid back dice game and you enjoy the presentation of Emerge I would say pick it up. It looks great and at times feels great to make decisions on your player mat for what goes where. If there’s an invite to a game its worth a play. Im not sure if I’d recommend picking it up unless its something you click with.

Apes together strong. After Us takes place in the post apocalypse where Apes rule the world and are racing to reach evolved intelligence. After Us is a puzzle-y deck builder. Players drsw four cards from their deck and organize them in any way they wish. You must combine costs with benefits, collects with collects, and solve the “puzzle” of what works best with what to gather resources and score victory points. The game ends when a player reaches 80 points.
Similar to Emerge theres a lot of bits I like and a few I don’t. There is a lot of simultaneous play that keeps turns from being bogged down and I appreciate that. We all assemble our monkeys together and resolve them at once. Its a brisk game that doesn’t overstay its welcome and the presentation/art is fabulous.
Where I have a bone to pick with After Us is in its RNG and player interaction. When you recruit new apes you draw from a facedown deck. You know vaguely what that ape is good at. The four types focus victory points, batteries, exile/trash, and repeat actions. You’re blind drawing from cards that don’t have specific abilities, just costs and benefits that are slightly randomized across the deck. But I ended up drawing lots of battery costs while my opponent did not, the apes I drew had a harder time with resources than my opponent’s draws, who provided and consumed similar resources. And there wasn’t an easy way out since all cards were blind draws.
The game also lacks any meaningful player interaction, its just a race. Theres a mechanic where when buying an ape you get a benefit of that clan and can pay 2 to copy a neighbor’s benefit, but it feels very stapled on last minute. Because its the only non simultaneous moment the only player interaction slows the game down.
After Us is another harder recommend. If you enjoyed Earth you will enjoy After Us. Earth similarly had low player interaction, youre all tuning engines till one pops. If you’re comfortable with that more solitaire play the puzzle of four apes in a line is enjoyable.

In Aurum players take the role of alchemists making formulas for gold. Aurum is a trick taking game with some higher level mechanics to it that will be hit or miss. There’s 5 “base metal” suits and a gold “trump” suit. Players start with a hand of base metals and one 0 gold. The leading player plays a card. The other players must follow, playing DIFFERENT suits than each other. The highest card wins the trick BUT the lowest card gains a gold card in their “collection” worth victory points. This card may also be used in tricks. At the beginning of the game players choose a number and put down a card from their hand of that number. That is their bid, they want to win exactly that many tricks. Go under and you get nothing. Go over and you score the bid in points. Match the bid and gain double the number in points.
So sometimes you wanna win the trick. Sometimes you want to force someone else to win. Sometimes you want to spend a 6-7 to lose the trick but gain a gold card of that value for points.
For a trick taking game there’s a number of things to consider. Do you want to waste a card that could take a trick on getting gold? Do you want to spend that 1-2 VP gold to ensure you reach your bid?
We played the 3 player variant and I found it to be this interesting standoff. Otherwise it plays 1v1 and 2v2.
If you’re into trick taking games and want something new. In the world of $30 medium pizzas and $10 1lb ground beef Aurum is $15. I recommend picking it up and giving it a try. It won’t work for everyone, but having a 3 player variant was fascinating. Like the other two games fantastic art direction and great quality, great presentation.

Four Humours is a prisoner’s dilemma game. Players place potions in scenes and once two scenes are full all are resolved in this order of operations how the four humors can “win” in priority order. Winning potions are placed on the board to satisfy objective cards. Whoever satisfies the most wins.
To explain the prisoner’s dilemma if you’re unfamiliar, there’s one scene in Four Humours with only two potion slots. Each can hold Choleric or Sanguine. Choleric wins if there is only one in the scene. 2+ choleric means nobody wins. Sanguine is next in priority. If Choleric doesn’t win, Sanguines all win if there are 2+ in a scene, regardless if they are owned by different players. Your opponent claims they played a Sanguine. Do you trust them? If you play your Sanguine and they played Choleric you lose. If you both played Choleric you both lose. If you both played Sanguine you both win. If you decide to screw your friend over and play Choleric to their Sanguine only you win.
And decisions like that are the core of the game. The 4-5 scene cards and 6 party tiles are all logic puzzles and bluffing/diplomacy minigames. With the mechanics behind the four humours you can goad people into making bad moves or win without actually winning the scene. You can be sneaky and crafty, treacherous or trustworthy.
Truly its mechanics are light, the game is placed between you and your buds rather than on your own playmats. With the nature of this game I wouldn’t recommend playing with less than four people, and it can hold up to six at a time. Its a great game that works off a great dilemma, trying to work around possibilities and promises of different players claiming to place different humours where feels great. Great replay value too, our game went thru about 1/2 the scenes and theres an alt game mode to explore.
I heartily recommend this one, easy pick.

One last bit before I snooze. Pandasaurus is a game company I own many games for: Brew, Dinosaur World, Wild Space, now Emerge and Aurum. Every game I’ve played from them is 80% of a really fantastic game. Its just missing a little something. The presentation is stellar, the effort is there, the creativity is apparent. I’m not trying to slam their games by any means.
Most end up relying on their theme harder than their mechanics. Games are carried at the thought of what you’re doing than the nuts and bolts behind it. Emerge, without set dressing, is a game of assembling tokens on tiles and adding base tiles to their tiles, rolling dice to do so. Wild Space is a game of playing cards to play more cards. What makes them tick is their stellar theming and A+ presentation with materials and art.
If you see this logo understand this might not be the most mechanically sound game. It also might not have the most player interaction, if any. But its going to look great at the table and each game has something that will make your brain go brrrr like the board game equivalent of a fidget spinner.
