Personally, I fondly recall the latter half of the 90s as the golden era for racing games, both in the arcade and on home consoles. When it comes to the arcade scene, iconic titles such as Daytona USA, Cruis'n World, Sega Rally Championship, and San Francisco Rush have rightfully earned their status as legendary games over the years.

However, what's truly remarkable is not only the abundance of these classics but also the surprising enjoyment found in lesser-known releases like Road Burners. Despite being less popular, games like the Atari/Midway release proved to be incredibly fun and addictive.

Realism and logic take a backseat in these games, as the primary goal is quick entertainment rather than simulating reality. No significant collisions with other racers or most objects, no gears – all vehicles boast a direct drive and the same maximum speed, and there's minimal damage except for an improbable explosion if you crash into a building. Just hop on your moto and race like crazy to secure that first-place finish.

Yet, high speed alone won't cut it. Here's the cool twist: scattered throughout each track are hidden shortcuts. Discovering and taking advantage of these shortcuts becomes crucial if you want to outpace your opponents.

Road Burners is fast, hectic, straightforward, and incredibly playable. While not in the same league as the above mentioned arcade racers in terms of popularity and gameplay, it stands out as a super engaging release that can easily keep you glued to the screen until you conquer every difficulty level. Again, this not only speaks volumes about the profusion of racing games from that period but also attests to their consistently high quality.
