Marcelo R. Batista: United Forces: An Archive of Brazil's Raw Metal Attack, 1986-1991 (2023)

After seven years living abroad (including the U.S. and Europe), I moved back to São Paulo, Brazil in the summer of 1986, so Bazillion Points' United Forces fanzine omnibus documents much of my 3rd World metal-head experience ... in ways I didn’t even remember it.

Mostly because I put it out of my mind, I think!

Not being old enough to drive or otherwise traverse a crime-stricken megalopolis of 25 million people -- let alone risk life and limb at a time when many shows ended in fatalities, and almost all of them massive fights with skin heads -- I often missed what few extreme metal concerts even came to our country.

Don’t even get me started on the challenges of obtaining metal albums, magazines, access to music videos, and just plain music news in the pre-internet era — things people take for granted in developed countries, and certainly in this day and age.

(And you thought YOU suffered for your right to rock!)

But in spite of all these challenges, I still partook of some unforgettable metallic experiences in that tight-knit heavy metal scene (e.g. Sepultura at Dama Xoc club in '89 springs -- only 2 people were killed!), as exciting as it was humbling.

That's why United Forces: An Archive of Brazil's Raw Metal Attack, 1986-1991 was such a wonderful trip down memory lane for this Brazilian "exile," who eventually grew all the more determined to move North and break into the music industry, a few years later.

Oh yeah, and "Morte aos posers!"
