Purchased these nectarines at Trader Joe's today.
I must share that nectarines are very dear fruit to me. My mother had told me that while she was pregnant with me, her consistent pregnancy craving was nectarines. She said that eating them brings her back to those times. I'd like to imagine that women's pregnancy cravings are also shared with the child in the womb. Maybe I could've been the one to tug at the umbilical cord for more of these suckers. Growing up I always found this fruit exceptionally delicious so when my mom had told me the lore we have with them, I never looked at them the same. Now instead of it being a cool fruit, I now share an emotional attachment to them. I wasn't intentionally seeking them today but Trader Joe's produce section is great because they only cycle some items in the store if they're in season (when they taste best). When I see nectarines in the store I know they're guaranteed to be perfect, and it's typically an immediate purchase for me. But I was charmed to find that the bag they were packaged in said "Coachella Valley". Quick flashbacks to Coachella last month tickled me for just a moment, and I laughed at the amount of satisfaction this funny little bag of nectarines have brought me. Oh I also wanted to post my breakfast because why not. It was chorizo egg burritos and kiwis.
Go buy a bag of nectarines.

the REAL difference between peaches and nectarines is:
peaches taste like heaven
nectarines taste like wannabe apples

I’m also already envisioning alternative versions of this with chocolate wafer cookie crusts and strawberries or even graham crackers and mixed berries, or whatever you have on hand. I don’t think you could make this taste anything less than abundantly delicious.
You’ll want to make this a few hours before you want to serve it, or the night before.
Crust 37 gingersnap cookies, coarsely broken (about 9 ounces; about 3 1/4 cups plus 2 tablespoons of pieces) 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Filling 1 8-ounce container mascarpone cheese 6 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 1/4 cup sour cream 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon finely chopped crystallized ginger (optional)
Topping 4 to 5 small nectarines, halved, pitted, cut into thin slices 1/4 cup peach jam, warmed 2 tablespoons finely chopped crystallized ginger (optional)
For crust: Preheat oven to 350°F. Finely grind gingersnaps in processor. Add butter and blend until crumbs are evenly moistened. Press mixture over bottom and up sides of 9-inch-diameter tart pan with removable bottom. (I like to use a cold metal measuring cup to get a nice, clear demarcation between the base and sides.) Bake crust until color darkens, pressing sides with back of spoon if beginning to slide, about 8 minutes. Cool completely.
For filling: Beat first 6 ingredients in medium bowl until smooth. Beat in crystallized ginger if you’re using it. Spread filling in prepared crust. Cover loosely and refrigerate at least 2 hours and up to 1 day.
For topping: Overlap nectarine slices atop filling in concentric circles. Brush with jam. Sprinkle with chopped crystallized ginger if you’re using it. (Mint makes an excellent garnish, if you’re skipping the ginger.) Serve, or refrigerate up to 6 hours.

Spring has sprung! I’m not the tidiest gardener, in fact I thoroughly enjoy watching nature just do her thing. I’m just kinda there to say “oh you’re so pretty!”
My nectarine tree has had her first big prune this year after like 6-7 years of just chilling there. Excited to see how she progresses.
And the grape vine tunnel I’ve been working with for 2 years now. There is 2 root systems there but there is 1 that quite overshadows the other. There’s so many wittle gwapes sprouting. They make me so happy.
Oh! and featured by the satellite dish is a blackberry bush that is rather resilient. I have uprooted all of her (so I thought) to transfer, the transfer died but her original root system lives on.
And my tiny little banana tree behind that, that completely died in the winter freeze and somehow has risen these past few days. So, we’ll see.
