Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Pumpkin, come to bed.” Johnnie whispered as I shook my head, “I can’t,I have to finish these lyrics.” I whispered as I barely looked away from my computer screen.
“When will you come to bed? It’s already midnight.” He told me and I nodded my head, “I know,I’ll be in bed by one,I promise, but I really have to finish this.” I told him with a sigh.
“If you’re not in bed by one,I’m turning off your pc.” He told me jokingly and I giggled, “Sure.” I said lightheartedly with a smile.
I continued to write as Johnnie walked off to bed,I had to finish these lyrics because the deadline was in three days,I was already behind and if I didn’t get this posted to them I would be worse off.
The amount of emails I was getting about the deadline was finally getting to me,the pressure put on me was keeping me up at night.
Ironically enough it was a song about the love between two people.I’ve always loved Johnnie, since the moment I saw him,so the second I got the chance at a love song I took it.
I hummed a tune to myself, listening to the beat of a song and editing the lyrics to fit the best I could. I knew I would end up scrapping and editing a few lines but I didn’t mind,as long as I got a base for my writing.
“You’re my my my lover~” I sung softly to myself as I checked if the lyrics matched the beat.
It was the most ironic situation I’ve been placed in,Johnnie was always looking out for me,taking mental health days off with me and always making sure I got enough sleep,he was the perfect example for a boyfriend.
I hummed softly to myself as I mind mapped some feelings for the song, the best I got up to was :
•love
•kindness
•looking out for people
•Caring
This was before I realised I was writing a song about Johnnie essentially. I was listing everything Johnnie had done for me,past and present. Johnnie was the perfect model for any love song.
I sit there tapping my pen against my paper, slowly running out of ideas before I edit a few more words.
“This is our place.” I hum to myself and quickly edit the line before I forget to,I smile as I realise i have my own house with the person I love. The realisation pulling a smile into my face.
“Have I known you 20 seconds or 20 years?” I whisper as I read out the lyrics, humming the tune to myself. This had become a love song about Johnnie and no one would know,I laugh to myself at the actualisation.
And before I knew it the click of the clock on my laptop changed the time to 1am, “Hey sweetheart,I need you to come to bed please, this isn’t good for you.” Johnnie whispered standing in the doorframe.
“Five more minutes,” I say as I look up at him, “Please!” I whisper to him as I see the disapproval sat on his face. “Okay, but after that im gonna have to drag you to bed.” He laughs but I know he would probably do that.
I mean ; not literally but Johnnie would drag me kicking and screaming if that’s what he had to do to get me to snuggle up to him in bed and sleep.
I edit a few lyrics and words before resting my head on the desk for a brief moment. A brief moment then turns into Johnnie tapping my arm, “Love wake up,you can’t sleep here, come to bed.” He whispers lovingly.
“No I have to finish this.” I say quietly looking up at him, “No,you’re coming to bed come on.” He says as he picks me up by the waist, holding me up to his waist without a reaction.
“Okay.” I whisper quietly.Tiredly I rest my head on his shoulder as we walk into our shared room,i strip myself of my clothes and put on my Pyjamas before huddling up in bed next to Johnnie.
“I love you.” I whispered as I kiss his cheek, “I love you too, princess.” He whispers before I drift of back into sleep.

on the radio . . . dominic fike's whole discography tbh but i made a small playlist
an listened to dominic fike and made this as a result… lmk if u want more of them 😊
You never thought you’d actually get into your dream university. Well, to be more specific, you never thought you’d get off the waitlist
When you first discovered you got waitlisted, you’d accepted your fate. Sure, you already had tons of merch and had been dreaming of your life in California for years, but not all dreams come true. You chose another school to commit to and began preparing for freshman year of university. Who gets off of waitlists anyway?
Apparently, you. As soon as you got the email confirming your spot, you thanked the heavens and immediately changed your plans, giddily packing all your merchandise and adding to your California themed Pinterest boards
Until you realised you had nowhere to live. None of your friends and family lived in California, and you really didn’t want to live in a dorm after all of the stories you’d heard about communal bathrooms (they’re my biggest fear actually). Unfortunately, it was either that or go apartment hunting and pray you could find a decent apartment that didn’t cost a fortune
Whatever, at least you got into your dream university in the end. Sharing a bathroom with a bunch of other young adults was worth it. After a few days of letting the news properly sink in, you called your childhood best friend Piper to tell her the good news
“Pipes, you won’t believe what happened!” You nearly yelled into your phone, excitedly pacing back and forth in your room. Putting her on speaker, you put your phone down and continued packing your bags
Piper hummed, pretending to think before replying with, “you finally got with a hot rockstar like you insist you will?” You huffed, rolling your eyes - she’d never stop teasing you
“No, even better!” You said, “I got into Jupiter University!”
Cue the squealing. Piper congratulated you a million times over, now pacing in her own room somewhere in Europe or Australia or wherever she was, you could never keep up with that girl’s travels
Your conversation went quiet for a second before Piper connected two very important dots, “wait… that means you’ll be moving to Cali, right?”
“Well, duh, how else am I supposed to get to class on time?” At your confirmation, Piper’s face lit up (not like you’d be able to see it)
“Oh my God, Y/N, this is perfect! I just moved back to California and my dad gave me this giant apartment all to myself, you can live with me!”
Okay, now, you were convinced some God was smiling down on you. You and Piper had toyed with the idea of living together ever since you were pre-teens, but you never thought that fantasy would ever actually come true
You moved in the following week
Living with Piper was a dream. The two of you were the same person in different fonts, so discussing boundaries and house rules was a breeze
As soon as you’d arrived, she took you to all her favourite places in California. Did this result in the two of you spending a disgustingly large amount of money? Maybe! But it was fun, so it didn’t really matter
She also promised to introduce you to all her friends, since she knew a couple people who were also starting at Jupiter University that fall. After much negotiation, you all had settled on meeting at a restaurant nearby in two weeks time, since you still needed to settle
Little did you know, you’d be meeting one of Piper’s friends earlier than the rest
Singer/songwriter Leo Valdez quickly rose in the charts after people fell in love with his unique music and his charming personality. All the hype had fueled his creativity and resulted in him releasing many albums in a very short amount of time
However, after every high comes a writer’s block, which is where Leo was at now. He wanted nothing more than to write and produce new music, but nothing seemed to inspire him - no matter how many walks he took or people he talked to, nothing good seemed to come out of him
His favourite person to mope to about his predicament was none other than Piper Mclean. He and Piper had met at some event his publicist forced him to go to a couple years ago and hit it off immediately, bonding over their dislike for how the industry worked and love of authenticity
So, after nearly breaking his guitar in frustration, Leo decided to pay Piper a surprise visit - 56th time’s the charm!
Meanwhile, you were making yourself a quick breakfast and typing up a quick grocery list. Turns out Piper had only moved back to California a couple days before you called her, so she didn’t have much to eat in her kitchen. You planned to surprise her with a variety of groceries as a little gift for her hospitality
Finishing off your list, you chose something random to watch and began eating your breakfast - well, almost
Before you could get a single bite in, someone loudly knocked on the door, disturbing your peace and causing you to nearly drop your bowl of cereal. You took a deep breath, deciding not to let this stranger ruin your day, and went to see who decided to visit Piper so early in the morning
Leo was expecting an aggravated, half-asleep Piper to open the front door, glaring at him whilst mumbling about him ruining her beauty sleep. Instead, he was met with the girl of his dreams, who looked him up and down before giving him a tentative smile
“Hello,” you said. The guy in front of you was kind of cute - brown curly hair, big brown eyes and a warm aura that radiated off of him. Something about him charmed you instantly
Fidgeting with the rings on his fingers, he said, “Uh, hi… Is Piper home?” Leo wasn’t usually shy, but you were too pretty and it was really early in the morning, he couldn’t help but lose eye contact with you
Moving to the side, you said, “yeah, she’s just asleep, but you can wait if you want.” How could he possibly turn around now?
Leo didn’t have to wait for very long, as Piper’s a very light sleeper. Hearing the conversation happening outside, she rolled out of bed, already knowing who her mystery guest is
“Leo, I see you’ve met my new roommate, Y/N,” she said, stifling a yawn as she made her way to where the two of you were sitting, “Y/N, this is my friend Leo Valdez - before you ask, yes, he’s that Leo. Please don’t feed into his massive ego.”
Your brows furrowed in confusion, you didn’t know of any Leo Valdez. Biting your lip, you began recalling all your past conversations with Piper. Various names and stories came up, but no Leo
“Am I supposed to know who he is? Sorry, I can’t remember…” you said hesitantly, hoping he wasn’t that important
For a second, everyone was quiet, then Leo said, “you seriously don’t know? I’m America’s favourite singer! Have you never heard ‘Hey Blondie’ by me? Or ‘Açaí Bowl’?” At your silence and Leo’s exasperation, Piper laughed, which earned her a very nasty glare from America’s favourite singer himself
You shook your head, now feeling bad. You really didn’t want to offend this cute guy on your first meeting, “I’m sorry, but I’ve never listened to any of your music before… I’ll definitely check you out though!”
Leo was just joking with you, but even if he were upset, he couldn’t stay mad at your kind smile and determination to make it up to him. At the same time, he felt a wave of self consciousness wash over him - what if you didn’t like his music? Leo was usually pretty confident in his abilities, but he found himself needing to impress you
Luckily, you were the inspiration he needed to start writing a new album. When Leo got home, the words seemed to flow out of him in just the right way
After that day, Leo started showing up at your’s and Piper’s apartment much more often, except now it was to see you, not Piper. When she asked Leo about the increase in frequency of his visits, Leo made up some excuse about needing you to judge his songs since you were new to his music so your opinions would be less biased
However, Piper knew the truth. Leo was in love. Was that a bit of a bold statement considering he only knew you for a week? Maybe, but anyone who knew Leo knew that when he fell, he fell hard
You were charmed by Leo too. As the days progressed and summer leaves turned brown, you and Leo got closer and closer. You began going over to his apartment every once in a while, or hanging out at parks and cafes, all under the excuse of needing to help with his songs
Just like the leaves, Leo’s songs began to shift. No matter how much he tried, he couldn’t help but write songs about you - you were on the forefront of his mind. Leo was enamoured by your bright eyes and kindhearted nature, it was only natural for him to begin writing songs about you
So, he embraced it. It was now nearing the one year anniversary of when the two of you met, so why not confess? If there was one thing Leo learnt from all the mistakes he made during his teen years, it was that there wasn’t much point in hiding things
However, he was Leo Valdez, the bad boy supreme himself, which meant he couldn’t just tell you outright. No, this had to be a special confession for a very special girl
Luckily, Leo was a pro at special confessions!
“Promise me you won’t listen to the album until the show, Y/N. I need you to get the authentic Valdez experience!” Leo told you over the phone. It was the night before the release of his new album and, to celebrate, Leo decided to host a quick and small show only a few minutes from where you lived - one you had front row tickets to
You thought this was a bit of a strange request but obliged, knowing how much this meant to Leo. At some point during his album-making journey, he started consulting you less. When you’d asked why, he said he wanted some of the songs on the album to be a surprise, which was fair enough, so you didn’t pry
Leo wasn’t lying: he did want some of the songs to be a surprise. Why? Well, because they were about you. Never in his life did Leo Valdez think he’d be writing love songs like the ones he wrote about you, especially after the horrible experience he had with his ex, Callie (wink wink)
When the night of the show came along, you and Piper got dressed and headed to the venue, matching VIP lanyards around your necks. You were really hoping to see Leo before the show and wish him luck, but Piper explained that Leo had his own special rituals to do before the show started so you weren’t going to see him. Oh well, you’d texted him a good luck message beforehand anyway
Leo rarely ever got nervous whenever he’d perform - he was used to it, after all. However, as he made his way onto the stage, his heart was beating the quickest and loudest it ever had. He scanned the crowds for your familiar head of hair, but unfortunately couldn’t spot you. However, he knew you were definitely out there
There’s no time better than the present. The crowd went silent as the first song started. The strumming of a guitar filled the venue, followed by a voice that wasn’t Leo’s
The song begun with a snippet of a voice message he’d received from you: “Fine, Leo, you’re so lucky I love you,” followed by a few giggles
Your eyes widened and at that moment, Leo finally saw you. As he looked into your eyes, everyone else disappeared. It was almost as if a show full of his biggest fans had turned into another afternoon spent in your room - you doing assignments while he played his guitar
“This is for you, I love you too,” he said, giving you a wink before beginning to sing
The rest of the concert was a blur. Was the album fantastic? Absolutely, it was one of the best you’d ever listened to. Unfortunately, you were too busy replaying that moment from the beginning of the show to be fully listening
You couldn’t believe Leo actually liked you back. You also couldn’t believe he liked you so much he was willing to announce it to the world - even though there were only a few people at his impromptu concert, the news would spread like wildfire
Somehow, you made it through the entire show without passing out. While everyone else proceeded to file out of the venue, you (and Piper) stayed behind. This conversation couldn’t wait a second longer than it already had
The security didn’t fight you as you made your way backstage, where Leo was busy tinkering with his instruments. Seeing him there as he hummed the tune of one of the songs he wrote just for you, you were filled to the brim with nothing but pure love
Piper stayed behind and watched as you ran to Leo, pulling him out of the trance his guitar pick had on him
“Hey,” he said, a goofy smile which matched yours making its way onto his face as you gave him what might’ve been the tightest hug he ever received. Leo breathed in the familiar scent of your shampoo and waited for you to pull away before saying, “I’m assuming you liked the show?”
Excitedly, you exclaimed, “liked it? Leo, I loved it! I’ve never seen anything like it!” While Leo was happy you enjoyed his concert, he still wasn’t satisfied. He needed you to acknowledge the opening song
The two of you stared at each other silently, waiting for the other to bring that up, both of you too nervous to say anything. Luckily, Piper wasn’t nervous
“Oh my God, guys, just say you’re in love with each other already!” She said, her voice cutting through the tension and allowing you to let go of a breath you didn’t know you were holding. You smiled at her then turned to Leo, your smile growing at the mere sight of him
Cupping his face, you said, “I love you more, Valdez.”

━。゜✿ jily fic recommendations ✿ ゜。━
You know when you read a fic and love it so much that you want to find one exactly like it but different. Anyways, more Alternate Universe fics.
For reference, anything in italics is taken from the summaries on ao3.
Tumblr media
These first few fics are all by elanev91 on ao3 (ao3 account required).
Force of Habit
Lily's been riding the same train back and forth to work for the last two and a half years and lowkey fancies the guy who sits one row up from her usual seat.
TW: parent death discussed
The fic that inspired the intro (I love it so much you don't understand)
Waffle Wars
There's only one waffle maker in the dining hall and it literally always breaks. So, naturally, the only reasonable course of action is to meticulously map out when it's working and, ultimately, do a heist.
every day I like you a little mower
Lily was JUST trying to be a good daughter and help her father with his yard work. Too bad the bloke next door is always outside and also the most annoyingly talkative person on the planet.
we could be gigantic series
Lily and James have been best friends since they were kids. Uni, a band, a trip abroad, a few tours and a couple of albums later, things start to change. Half an email fic, half a regular ol' narrative.
it wasn't a pity invite
Prompt: my family invites you to join our holiday meal as an obvious setup and omg i’m so sorry
The one where they’re both doctors - also Northern Irish Lily.
One Direction on the A4
James and Lily are having quite the morning. James thinks a little nonsense might fix it. Or James is a dork and Lily loves it.
Ye Olde Smut Fic
Student recruitment fairs suck, but never fear -- Professor Evans and Professor Potter have figured out how to make it a little less annoying.
Professor AU, Modern AU, Muggle AU. Smutty ridiculousness. Plot questionable.
The tragedy is that they live in America
The Yeast I Can Do
Dr Lily Evans had an absolute shit day at work. Luckily, there's a bakery nearby that offers a course that she hopes will take her mind off of things.
For my fellow jily & wolfstar enjoyers, go do yourself a favour and check out their other works on ao3.
Teenage Kicks by @arianatwycross
It all starts with Lily being hired to be the bands tour photographer, then she actually meets the band and she quickly becomes absorbed by their fast lifestyle, their pranks and the hot lead singer. But its not exactly simple to be crushing on a famous Rockstar, is it?
Foam Hearts by Sleepinghookah (on ao3)
Coffee shop AU. A story in which James and Lily are blind - both in entirely different ways.
I promise he's not a bad person. You've got to read till the end and it'll make sense
When The Skies Are Gray by @athenasparrow
“Carry me?” Lily scoffed, biting her lip so she wouldn’t laugh in his face. Because he was about to do something nice for her. “I’m not some damsel in distress who can’t walk! I just need a bit of cover to make it to the tube.”
OR: two strangers, one umbrella, and a little bit of fate.
Tranquil Solitude (Until You Came Along) by @thelighthousestale
Prompt: I thought I went skinny dipping alone but oh my god this beautiful human is also here naked and I am a fool
All Lily wanted to do was take a nice, quiet swim on a hot day. And then James Potter showed up. And Lily had already removed her clothes for the private swim.
it would have been sweet by @firefeufuego
‘Lily,’ he says in her ear, voice slurred and barely audible above the pulsing bass of the music, ‘is there a reason I shouldn’t marry her?’
She can taste the truth bittersweet on her tongue: Yes of course there is, you colossal, darling idiot, you’re meant to be mine. But there’s the ring on Charlotte’s finger and there’s the one Lily found in Eddie’s sock drawer, and how can she be this person? The one who steals someone’s fiancé on his stag night? That’s not who she is, that won’t be who she is. ‘Of course not, James. You’ll make each other so happy.’ She nearly chokes on the lie as it leaves her mouth, all the more so because most of it isn’t even a lie at all.
For my second chance romance girls
This Hope is Treacherous by @tinyluminaryzombie
Lily Evans and James Potter: Aquentiences, Academic rivals, and now, Friends.
Except "friends" doesn't exactly feel right but Lily's too scared to do anything about it. But as James and her keep acting like more-than-friends she's unraveling with the uncertainty of it all.
OR: Choosing to fall in love can be just as thrilling and terrifying as love at first sight.
The Viscount's Daughter by @ghostofbambifanfiction
The beautiful, vivacious, and decidedly redheaded daughter of the 16th Viscount of Rowena has stolen the heart of young Prince James. Trouble is, she couldn't be less interested in him.
Thought it was abandoned but the author posted a snippet recently so maybe not?
The Queen of the Quills - Jily Edition by @elliemarchetti
Lily and Petunia read the Queen of the Quills' latest column on James Potter, while the bachelor announces to his friends that he intends to get married.
Quest for Camelot by the incredible @petalsthefish
After the legendary Excalibur sword is stolen, Lily and James embark on a quest to retrieve the lost weapon. Lily searches for the sword to prove she is capable of being a knight despite being a girl. James searches because his falcon, Marlene, is desperate to find it for her master, Merlin. Along the way, they attempt to outwit the sinister Ruber, navigate through magical obstacles, decode puzzling prophecies, and uncover surprising similarities between themselves.
As their journey progresses, they both cannot deny the feelings growing between them with each passing day. Will they make it out of the quest alive, or will one of them perish in the ever-growing darkness that threatens to swallow the entire realm if Ruber gets his hands on the sword?
Based on the 1998 movie Quest for Camelot, but with more plot and less singing
Fearlessly Red also by @ /petalsthefish
Red. It was such an interesting color to correlate with emotion because it was on both ends of the spectrum. On one end there was happiness, falling in love, passion, all that. On the other end was jealousy, fear and frustration. Maybe that's why James thought the nickname fit Lily so well.
or Bodyguard!James/Celebrity!Lily
Get A Room bt @chierafied
The long-awaited trip to London goes awry when Marlene chooses to spend time with her boyfriend - forcing Lily to share their room with none other than James Potter.
you don't know me (but I know you) by @emeralddoeadeer
Lily has a crush, she knows his face well but can only imagine his name; until they meet that is.
About Time by heartablaze (on ao3)
Before his final year started, James Potter offered to be a resident advisor for a first-year dorm. What he didn’t count on was dealing with a confusing redhead across the hall, hospital visits, hallway parties and writing his thesis the night before it was due. Blimey. (Muggle Uni AU)
Unexpectedly in Love by jamespotters_exgirlfriend (on ao3)
When Lily Evans entered her final year of uni, she certainly didn’t expect to fall in love with James Potter. And well, let’s just say love isn’t the only unexpected thing to come out of their relationship.
Far Post by @eastwindmlk
James Potter and his friends are very serious about their pub football league. So, when the new roster comes out and there is a new team on there, an all women's team, he and Sirius set out to investigate.
You Know How To Ball, I Know Aristotle by @wearingaberetinparis
Now that the global superstar, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Lily Evans and professional football player James Potter are together, they have to juggle the difficulties of a relationship in the public eye. Fresh off her World Tour, Lily Evans arrives at Wembley Stadium one year after James Potter first attended her show, to perform there for one final weekend before heading to the studio to record her next album. Her boyfriend, in the meantime, is off to Germany to play at the Euros for England. How will they ever make their relationship work when Lily is - so the press loves to imply - the least supportive WAG of the tournament?
sequal to And You Heard About Me (Ooh, We’ve Got Some Big Enemies!)
It's been a long time coming and it did not disappoint
I've recommended Three Swipes, You're Out by @naireides before, but I recently came across it's sequel making spirits bright
Sports star James Potter tries to pick Lily up on tinder. Lily Evans, a dedicated not sports fan is offended by the idea that someone thinks she wouldn't recognize James Potter's face. She laughs about it with her friends at a bar, until James Potter, who also frequents that bar, comes over to clarify that nope, he's on tinder, and he's definitely hitting on her.
...
She should have expected it to be hard, dating a celebrity, but somehow she and James make it work.

Chapter XVI
You Are the One
One time, Elain Marie Paige Archeron had everything she ever wanted. She had love. A love that was pure and clean and genuine. A love that did not ask for anything in return. The kind of love that was true, and kind, and forgiving, and protective. She couldn’t remember a time when she laughed as much as she did in the last three months. She recalled waking up every morning for the past three months and feeling lighter, like there was joy and a promise of good things. Now, in hindsight, she realised that it was because she was in love. But also because she was loved. No one’s ever loved her like that before. No one looked at her in the same way, like she was precious. Like she mattered. Like she was someone’s favourite thing in the world.
Only Elain Archeron did not hold on to that love.
She took it for granted.
She took the man who offered her his devotion and his loyalty and his unconditional, undeniable and passionate love for granted, never thinking that she’d ever lose him.
But she did.
She lost Azriel.
“Remember, darling, that’s nature…simple biology,”
“Daddy, you aren’t going to be talking about how babies are made?” Elain sniffled, half amused, half horrified.
Her father smiled a sad smile and shook his head no.
“You have to remember that it’s the sperm that chases the egg. It’s the man who pursues the woman. Not the other way around. A man will chase and will not give up until he gets that sperm into the egg.”
“Ew, dad!”
“You are a big girl, my pretty rose. You know what I mean.”
Elain considered his words, and as graphic as they were, they also made sense. He was correct.
“Love was invented to make nature more palatable,” he continued, “but biology never changed. It’s still about the sperm and the egg. Therefore, let him chase you. And if he doesn’t, then you’ll know the answer. But never chase a man, sweetheart. It’s his nature, his responsibility and his destiny to chase after a woman.”
She sighed and looked out the window.
It's been almost two weeks and Azriel hasn’t sought her out. The sperm hasn’t chased the egg. Azriel hasn’t chased her at all.
At first, it was just…silence.
For four days, it was silent.
Her texts went unanswered. There were no call backs. She even went old school and sent Azriel an email! And that didn’t get a response either.
She was ready to go all the way to Canary Wharf and be the weird girlfriend who busts into her boyfriend’s home and starts to demand answers.
But he finally messaged her with a one word text: ‘training’. That’s all it said. No apology and no explanation. Not an ‘I am sorry for ignoring you’ or ‘I’ve been swamped with the team stuff’. No, she didn’t get anything other than ‘training’.
And so, Elain had changed her mind about trekking to Canary Wharf and waited. Training would eventually be over and he would be back. He'd return to her. Elain wanted to be an understanding girlfriend, who was going to support her man. She realised that he needed to get back into the groove of the game after his injury and get his body back in playing shape. Therefore, when Saturday came about and Arsenal was playing Luton Town, she dutifully turned on the telly and listened to the pre-game broadcast while Piglet raced upstairs and then came back with his red jersey, tossing it to her and urging her to dress him in it. He already knew what he needed to wear when Azriel was playing, and even though he made a mess in his cubby, turning it out and tossing all the other things on the floor, Elain thought that it was too cute how he got so excited and was behaving like a proper little fan.
They watched the game, with Piglet sitting there, enraptured, and howling happily every time Azriel appeared on the screen. How Piglet recognised him, Elain didn’t know–she once hid under a blanket for 10 minutes, and her pug was wandering around in confusion, looking for her, never thinking to pull the blanket off. But here, he somehow was eagle-eyed and was spotting Azriel among the tiny players on the screen.
While Piglet was innocently happy to watch the game, hopping and rolling around, Elain’s mood was more subdued. She did take a photo of the pug and sent it to Azriel. When the game concluded, and Arsenal had won, she messaged him and said ‘Congratulations! Brilliant game’.
Thanks.
That’s what Eain got in response to her message from Azriel.
Thanks.
Angrily, she waited for more, but nothing else came.
Because if he’d responded, she’d confront him and give him a piece of her mind. What did she do to him?? She was a somewhat reluctant girlfriend, but she had the right to be reluctant. He moved like a freight train, but she was more cautious. Besides, she’s lived through many heartbreaks before and every single man that she’s been with has broken up with her. She never broke up with anyone–all the breakups were initiated by the men. And it looked like the pattern was continuing, unbroken. Azriel was also fed up with her and was breaking up.
That night, after the terse ‘thanks’ Elain closed her bedroom door, so Piglet wouldn’t hear her, and wept.
She wept for herself, for her lost love, for her stupidity.
She cried tears of anger, feeling rage sweep over her, cursing Azriel under her breath, calling him names. She was so angry. Angry at him for making her fall in love with him. Angry at him for making her feel. For having hope. Feelings and hope were things that she long ago placed in a place that she did not access and longed to forget. She hated Azriel Night for making her think that she could be loved, with a passion and devotion that Rhys offered her sister Feyre. She hated him for being even worse than Eris. At least Eris never offered her false hopes–he was what he was and she knew that going in. There would be no sweeping her off her feet by Eris. But Azriel…No, Azriel was gallant and strange. He courted her with ferocious intent and was not shy about showing her, and everyone around them, how much he wanted her. He loved her dog. He cooked for her. He cared for her. He cherished her. He joked, but he never pushed her into an uncomfortable place. She didn’t expect to find him and somehow, he landed on her doorstep. Literally. The old saying ‘it will happen when you least expect it’--well, it happened to her. She didn't expect him to sweep into her life and just overtake her whole existence. Because he did. And she hated him and herself, for allowing him so much power over her. She’d given him everything–her heart, first and foremost, but also access to her home, to her sanctuary and to her family. Even her father had accepted Azriel as an appropriate match for his beloved Elain. Elain was her father’s princess. She was the one he loved the most, and the one who gave him the most worry. He’d been lukewarm on Eris, despite Eris’s title and background. But Azriel–Azriel’d wormed his way into Sir Charles’s heart and Elain’s father came to like Azriel quite a bit.
But he never called.
At some point, while operating like a zombie day in and day out, Elain couldn’t stand it anymore and swallowed her pride and messaged Gwyn Berdara.
She was mentally exhausted, thinking nonstop about Azriel and why he was acting the way he was acting. Unable to bring herself to reach out to him yet again, and receive yet another awful, one word answer, she opted for contacting Gwyn. She had no feelings about Gwyn either way–she’d only met her twice in person, and Gwyn wasn’t memorable enough for Elain to develop a strong opinion about her. But Gwyn didn’t respond to her either. Elain had sent a nonchalant sort of message of: Good morning! How are you? Just checking in to see how things are going with Azriel Night? I didn’t want to bother him as he is training and playing right now, but I am curious about your progress with him?
The message remained unread.

However, Elain Archeron did not need to wait for long to get answers to her questions. They came a day later, courtesy of the Daily Mail.
Another Mystery Woman for the Rackish Lothario?
Azriel Night,  Captain of Arsenal, never one wanting for female company, has been spotted at The Devonshire with a new companion.
It seems that only a few months had passed since he was photographed on the streets of London carrying another woman in his arms following an attempted robbery. He’d been previously seen with the beautiful partner, now identified as Lady Elain Archeron, on more than one occasion. Hello Magazine even published a holiday spread of the lovely Archeron sisters and their partners in their Christmas edition. London society is still buzzing over the surprise marriage of Lady Feyre Archeron and Lord Rhysand Darling back in December, and over the budding romance between Lady Nesta Archeron, the Duchess of Velaris and Mr. Cassian Night (Azriel Night’s brother).
By all accounts, the romance between the gorgeous aristocrat and Mr. Azriel Night was going splendidly and he’d been seen leaving her luxurious Russell Square townhouse, and even walking her pug, all through the month of December. However, it seems that their relationship is now on pause.
Mr. Night had been spotted dining at the upstairs restaurant at The Devonshire in the company of another woman. The yet to be named companion and Mr. Night enjoyed Sunday lunch at the Soho hotspot, dining on Roast Rib of Beef, all the trimmings and sticky toffee pudding.
After so many trials and errors, will this one be the one to capture Azriel Night’s heart forever?
He was at The Devonshire on Sunday–the Sunday when it was Elain’s turn to cook Sunday roast. When everyone had come to her house for lunch. And by everyone, she meant–everyone. Rhys. Feyre. Her father. Nesta. CASSIAN. Cassian Night, who introduced her and Azriel, was at her dinner table, eating roast chicken and buttery peas. But his brother, Elain’s boyfriend, was on a date with someone else.
A more awkward lunch couldn’t be imagined into existence, even by a talented writer.
Nesta was seething, smoke coming out of her ears. Cassian looked pained and uncomfortable. Rhys didn’t fare much better.
But it was Piglet who broke everyone’s hearts. He sat by the front door for three hours–waiting for Azriel to arrive. He didn’t move. He didn’t eat. He waited.
And waited.
And waited.
The whole family was here, and surely his dad would come as well. So he waited. He paced and then he lay on the floor, and he looked at the door, blinking his big brown buggy eyes.
Only Azriel never came.
-
It was a few days later, when Elain on on break between meetings and arranging dates that her phone lit up with a message. She looked at it and her face dropped.
Gwyneth Berdara
Hi Elain! Things are going well, thank you for asking. How are you?
Elain Archeron
I am well, thanks! Forgive me for bothering you,
Gwyneth Berdara
It’s no bother! I apologise for not responding sooner. I had a presentation to create and it took all my energy and time! 😀
Elain Archeron
I can only imagine. I was just wondering how things are with Mr. Night?
Gwyneth Berdara
We made the Daily Mail. Can you imagine? The one time we had lunch together. I can’t imagine spending all my life being hounded by journos
Elain Archeron
Oh, have you? I wasn’t aware that you were in the paper!
Gwyneth Berdara
😂 😂 I am suddenly a mini celebrity. Haha. I am only joking. But honestly? Don’t laugh, but we are mostly talking about football and working out. And hand to hand combat.
Elain Archeron
You are interested in hand to hand combat??
Gwyneth Berdara
I’ve been studying. Self-defence first, and then I got interested in other things. He is showing me some sicke moves!
Elain Archeron
? Okay. I guess thank you for getting back to me. Let me know how it progresses.
Gwyneth Berdara
Will do. Also I didn’t realise the two of you were so close. He talks about you a lot. I know you were his matchmaker too but it’s like you are his GF or something.
Elain Archeron
Well, no worries. I am not. Thanks. Bye.
Elain was even more confused and upset about things after that bizarre exchange. Also, who used the expression ‘sicke moves’?
Professor Gwyn was into hand-to-hand combat? And Azriel was teaching her ‘sicke’ moves? Elain knew that Azriel was a fighter and grew up rough, but…what?
There was no clarity around what was actually happening between Azriel and Gwyn after all that, and Elain only grew more and more anxious.
-
Another Sunday.
It was Nesta’s turn to cook and host, however, Sir Charles insisted that his daughters come to his house instead. And for that, Elain was grateful.
She was even more grateful to her sisters, who’d arrived without their men. She knew that they were lying when they said that both Rhys and Cassian were ‘busy’ on Sunday, but nevertheless, she was grateful to them. She didn’t think that she could handle another painfully awkward lunch with the handsome brothers who looked entirely too much like Azriel, and with her grieving pug.
She was seated on the sofa, her legs tucked beneath her, her chin resting on her folded hands, as she looked out the window. It was raining. Rain. Rain. Rain. Endless fucking rain.
She barely bothered today–her appearance was sallow and unkempt. She tied her hair in a messy bun, wore a beige jumper and a pair of yoga trousers–attire which was entirely inappropriate for Sunday lunch and not something she’d ever dare leave the house in. But she just couldn't bring herself to care. When the butler opened the door, he stepped back, lack of recognition evident on his face, before he quickly gathered himself and said, “Lady Elain, good afternoon. Please come in.”
Her father, and neither of her sisters comment on her appearance and the maudlin way that she moved around the house, with Piglet trailing behind her, his nose to the ground. No one was surprised when she went to her father’s study and curled up on the sofa, like she did when she was little.
“He’s lost weight,” Sir Charles noted, as he stroked Piglet’s back, while the pug lay unmoving in his lap.
“Two kilos,” Elain said, looking out the window. Expensive cars rolled down the street, taxis and stray pedestrians huddled under their umbrellas. Late January was miserable. Even the warmth of the fire in the marble fireplace didn’t make a difference.
“That’s a lot for a pug,” her father commended. “Is he not eating?”
“He eats, but he doesn’t ask for snacks and mostly he just sits by the door,” Elain answered and wiped the tears that rolled down her cheeks.
“Elain,” he began saying, but she rose up swiftly and rubbed her eyes vigorously.
“I am okay, daddy,”
“No you aren’t,” he said sadly. “No you aren’t”.
She shrugged, like it didn’t matter. And maybe it didn’t. Nothing much mattered.
“Let’s go eat.”
Just then, a knock on the door informed them that lunch was indeed served.
At least life was predictable. Pleasantly predictable here, with her family. There were no treacherous men and no disloyalty.
Feyre and Nesta were already at the table, their expressions worried, even though they tried really hard to act normal.
“Hi Piggy, come here little boy,” Feyre tried to summon the pug, but Piglet didn’t even look at her and just went to his bowl, sniffing disinterestedly at the chicken and rice offering.
Once the wine was poured and the soup was served and the butler left the dining room, Nesta, who’s been clutching at her spoon like she was going to lunge at someone with it, snarled,
“I have to say something,”
“Don’t say anything,” Feyre warned. “Nesta. Don’t.”
“That utter arsehole,” Nesta ignored her youngest sister and clutched at her napkin until her knuckles were white.
Sir Charles winced, knowing that the lunch was about to descend into chaos.
“Girls,” he began with a sigh, but suddenly was interrupted by Elain.
Her voice was monotone and she spoke without inflection, staring straight ahead.
“If I die before Piglet,” she said calmly, while the rest of her family tensed and stared at her with apprehension, “show him my body.”
“Elain,” Feyre gasped. But Elain ignored her and continued,
“Bring him over to my deathbed. Allow him to smell me. He will understand death. He will understand that I was gone and that I would not be coming back. Allow him to mourn me. But do not attempt to spare him the sight of me and my death. He should know that he was not abandoned. He must know that I died, but that I did not leave him. He must understand that unlike others, I did not abandon him. Not like his first family and not like Azriel. He should not be waiting by the door for me to come back. Take him to the funeral and allow him to watch me be lowered into the ground so he understands the finality of it all. He must know that Elain loved him and did not leave him on his own. She was not like Azriel. She never lied to him.”
-
What Elain had missed the most was the casual intimacy.
As another week passed and January was coming to a close, Elain’s life returned to its natural, if boring routine.
She worked, taking on more clients–thank god for January and ‘resolutions’ and people wanting to couple up–and that took a lot of her time. She was grateful for the distraction, but the nights and the weekends were tough.
Most evenings, she cried herself to sleep, while remembering all the good things that she’d lived through with Azriel. He wasn’t dead, yet the fissure of emptiness inside her chest that was created by his absence really felt like he had died. There was something unsaid and unfinished about them, which bothered her like a toothache. It was a wound which she kept irritating every time she remembered something about him.
How he was so effortlessly sexual with her, and how his relaxed sensuality allowed her to feel free with her own sexuality for the first time in her life. To Azriel, she was beautiful. Always beautiful. Never awkward or chubby or clumsy or strange.
The way he would habitually slap her bum, every time he passed by her. Or pinch it. Or caress it. Or cup it in his large hand. At first it scandalised her. And then, she grew to love it. She grew to expect it.
The way he strutted around after a shower in only a towel wrapped around his hips, showing off his incredible body…goodness gracious! That was something to behold! The way she learned all the details of his form, no matter how insignificant–his tattoos, the shape of his shoulders, the thickness of his biceps, how his neck was a touch too long for his body, but how that made him appear more graceful. She knew exactly how many abdominal muscles he packed–more than six, and definitely eight, and she knew the shape of his long strong fingers. His hair curled slightly in the back of her neck. His hazel eyes had more green in them than brown, and were peppered with black specks. He had perfect toes. The V of his hips could only be called vicious, because it was so sharp and pointed right at his…The one thing Elain never got to see. She never saw his member. Felt it, knew that it was worryingly large and thick, but she never saw it.
She supposed that she always thought that they’d have more time.
She recalled how one time, they were in a restaurant. It was moderately busy and they were seated by the window. It so happened that there was no one at the table in front of them, or by their side. So what did he do? He parted her shirt on her chest, and when she thought that he’d just cop a feel–something he did often and without hesitation–he bared her breast completely and tugged on her nipple, while kissing her lips. She sat there, completely delirious with love and arousal, while he pinched and rolled her nipple in his fingers, while squeezing her bare tit in his palm. Just as the waiter approached, he tucked her back in and acted like nothing happened.
She missed him.
Sometimes, she screamed into her pillow, a long, tortured scream because she…well, she missed him. There was nothing that could replace him in her life.
She loved him. Loved him when they were together, and loved him now–perhaps even more than before.
-
He rang her.
Once.
It was a day like any other. A blustery wintry afternoon, only 5 pm and already pitch black outside. Though slowly, but surely the days were getting a bit longer. Just a little. It was early February and Elain just changed into her comfy joggers and a sweatshirt having just come back from walking Piglet. He hated being outside, especially when it was cold and drizzling, and thankfully, it was a quick walk and he did his business in record time.
For some reason, it didn’t register with Elain that it was Azriel’s name on the Caller ID.
She’d become so used to his calls and messages that it seemed normal that he’d be ringing her.
“Hello,” she said.
He seemed surprised when he said, “Hi Elain”.
Everything stopped.
The moment she heard that voice, that achingly familiar, smooth, deep voice she felt her hands shake, and her heart beat wildly in her chest.
She threw her phone on the counter as if it burned her and then, with her finger trembling, pressed the ‘speaker’ button.
“Why are you calling me?” she demanded, her voice barely a whisper.
He didn’t answer right away.
“Why?” she asked again, and to her horror her voice was already hoarse and weak, and she sounded strangled. Because there were tears in her eyes and she was hyperventilating.
“How are you?” he asked softly instead.
How was she?
How dare he?
How was she?
She howled like an animal in her sorrow over losing him.
She cried.
She screamed.
She wondered what she'd done and why he just left her without an explanation?
She didn’t eat.
She didn’t sleep or she slept too much.
“Fine. Brilliant. All good,” she laughed a dry, angry laugh. “I am sure you are doing well too, right? How’s Gwyn?”
He sighed, like the sound of her voice pained him.
“I didn’t like the way things ended between us,” he told her somberly, ignoring her question.
“Well, it was your choice, wasn’t it?” she reminded him.
“I suppose?”
It sounded like he wasn't sure.
“What do you want, Azriel?” she demanded.
“How’s Pink?” he asked instead.
“What do you want to hear exactly?”
Did he want to hear about Piglet crying by the door?
Did he want to hear about Piglet avoiding any football on TV and barking violently for her to change the channel if he saw anyone running on a green field?
Did he want to hear about Piglet sitting and waiting for him for hours, day after day, hoping that his dad would show up?
“You abandoned him,” she accused him savagely. “I told you not to make him fall in love with you. I told you not to allow him to get attached to you. I explicitly told you that this would happen if he thought of you as his own.”
“I am sorry,” he whispered brokenly.
“You did it all. You hurt us, Azriel. What do you expect to happen now?” she questioned him, feeling her voice becoming hysterical. “Two brothers and two sisters together at Christmas. A third sister alone. A third brother who used to date the third sister is now with some random woman. Is this your vision? For all of us to play happy families? Like nothing’s happened. Like we didn’t exist. Like what we had didn’t matter??”
“He did matter,” he argued. “It does.”
She ignored him.
“Cassian and Nesta are dating now. Feyre and Rhys are married. Instead of leaving me alone–like I requested, over and over again–you made me fall for you. Fall in love with you. And then you tossed me aside.”
“You love me?” he breathed a shocked gasp.
“What?”
“You said you fell in love with me,”
“You are unbelievable,” she cried out. He was always deranged, but now he was even more incomprehensible. What was wrong with him?
“My dog is screaming any time he sees Arsenal signage. My heart is shuttered. Is that what you wanted?” Elain broke down in tears. “Is that what you wanted?
“I never wanted that,” he argued quietly. “I never,”
“What did you think would happen?” she insisted, sobbing. “That I can just walk away?”
“I don’t know,” he admitted, his voice devastated. “It all spiralled out of control…I didn’t want any of this.”
She wasn’t listening to him.
She cried.
Cried for her lost love. Cried for the children she’d never have with him. Cried for the future they’d never have. Cried for not knowing what his perfect day consisted of. Cried for the Christmases they’d never celebrate together again. Cried for his touch and for his kisses and for him next to her in bed. Cried for the games she’d never cheer at. Cried for knowing that she’d never see him snuggling together with Piglet.
She cried and Azriel listened.
She didn’t know how long it lasted–felt like an hour–and he didn’t say anything. He didn’t comfort her, but he didn’t ask her to stop either.
At some point, Piglet came over. He looked up at her, watching her weep, and whimpered sadly, before curling himself at her feet.
“I am sorry, Elain,” Azriel whispered at last.
She quieted down, before telling him,
“I wanted to be your wife, you know. I wanted to build a family with you. I wanted to have your children.”
“I understand. And I am sorry.”
“I wish you happiness, Azriel. Even if you robbed me of mine.”

masterlist: part 1 part 2 part 3 part 4 part 5 part 6
pairing: joel miller x f!reader
tropes: fluff, slow-burn
warnings: 11 year age-gap (reader is 23, joel is 34)
word count: ~6000
author’s note: so this chapter as well as the next one basically serve as one long exposition before the main story (aka the prequel). i realise this is lengthy as hell but i needed to flesh out the relationship between joel and the reader for the upcoming chapters to hurt, you know?
(p.s. there's mention of joel carrying the reader. i know some people might be put off by this, but joel is quite buff. i mean the man works in construction, i promise he can handle carrying an adult for less than a minute)

The air was getting chillier, the change of seasons not going unnoticed. (Y/N)'s focus was razor-sharp as she drove through the streets of Austin, making sure to take in the ever-changing leaves on the trees she passed by. As an exchange student, it wasn't cheap to be renting a car, and the money her parents were generously providing her could only last for so long. She desperately needed another source of income. Her prayers were answered the week prior when she stumbled upon an advertisement near the exit to her university. It was for a babysitting job with a decent pay and convenient working hours. She wrote an email to the address written on the poster:
Dear Mr. Miller, Is the babysitting job still available? I'm a student currently on an exchange program at the University of Texas. And while I haven't had prior experience in babysitting, I used to be an assistant teacher in a kindergarten. I'm very good with children and at keeping them alive (this is a joke, but I am pretty responsible, my mother can attest to this). If there is any need for it, I can also cook and clean up after each visit. Thank you for your consideration and I hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely, (Y/N) (L/N)
To which, much to her surprise, she received an answer shortly after:
Dear Ms. (L/N), Yes, the babysitting job is still available. It's for my 12-year-old daughter Sarah. And while I appreciate all that you have to offer, there's nothing much to do but keep her alive, so your skill would be useful here. You can come by our house on 1411 Sullivan DR any day of the week after 5pm, we'll go over the details then. If you're still interested, you'll be able to start right away. See you soon!
Best regards, Joel Miller
After half-an-hour of driving, the house finally came into view. Just as she parked the car in the vacant driveway, and before she went to meet some stranger she hoped wouldn't turn out to be a creep, the girl gathered her wits and courage with a clasp of her hands, a deep breath, and a firm nod as if to say 'There's no going back now, and if I die, it is what it is'.
Her three knocks on the door were followed by a long pause which made her believe she had arrived either at the wrong time or the wrong house. But as she was about to turn around and flee in embarrassment, out came a middle-aged man with disheveled hair.
"Hello. Is this the Miller's house?"
"Yes, hi! I am so sorry I kept you waiting. (Y/N), right?" he said, wiping his hands on a rag.
"That's me."
"Great. I'd shake your hand, but mine are a bit dirty. Please, come in." he stepped out of the way to let her walk further into his home.
It was decently spacious and cozy, which temporarily put her at ease. They walked through the living room into the dimly lit kitchen. It smelled of spices and garlic.
He gestured around, "Welcome to our humble abode. Pardon the mess, I didn't exactly have time to tidy up," While it wasn't exactly messy, they could benefit from an extra set of hands. "You said you weren't from around here?"
"No, I'm quite a long way from home," (Y/N) said, taking a seat at the dining table. "I wanted to see other places, gain a bit of independence. Austin was one of the first to accept me, and since it seemed like a fine city to live in, I packed up my things and arrived at the beginning of summer."
"I'm Texas born and raised myself. Wouldn't dream of living anywhere else. How old are you exactly?"
"Twenty-three, sir."
He proceeded to rummage through the fridge that was almost full. "Alright. Would you like a beer, then? And please, call me Joel. You're making me feel old."
"Right, Joel. And sure, I'll have one if you do."
Joel handed her a cold bottle as he sat down across from her. She was familiar with the brand, they served it at the bar she worked at part-time on weekends. For the next hour-and-a-half, the two discussed (Y/N)'s life, her studies, Joel's job as a contractor, and Sarah. At some point, the attacks on 9/11 came up, unpacking the nation-wide terror they had brought. She recalled the panicked calls she received from her parents, begging her to come home. She had to explain that she was alright, that there was nothing to do about it now, and that she couldn't leave the city when she had already formed ties and taken on responsibilities.
Just as Joel was getting into another anecdote from Sarah's childhood, they heard keys jangling in the front door as it opened and shut.
"Speak of the devil. Done playing already?"
A soft voice rang through the house, "Yeah, I'm really tired." Then a pigtailed girl stopped abruptly at the entrance to the kitchen. She was wearing a soccer kit, carrying both a purple backpack as well as a blue duffel bag.
"Sarah, this is (Y/N). She's gonna be your nanny from now on."
The little girl hesitated at first, then gently approached the table and extended her small hand for her to shake. "Nice to meet you." she said with as much courage as she could muster, earning a smile in return.
Getting up from his seat, Joel kissed his daughter's head and told her food was ready, which prompted the child to run upstairs to her room. Feeling like it was her cue to leave, (Y/N) followed suit and slung her bag on her shoulder.
"Would you like to stay for dinner? I'm not much of a chef, but I have to admit I make a mean chili." said the man, pointing at the steaming pot on the stovetop.
The smell of a homemade meal was making her mouth water, but she hadn't known them for long enough to get comfortable. "Thank you for your hospitality, but I should really get going. I have some reading to finish before morning."
The two made their way back to the front door. "Alright, then. I'll see you tomorrow afternoon, yeah?"
"See you tomorrow, Mr. Miller- Joel, sorry." she corrected herself, waving him goodbye as she swiftly got into her car and began the drive back to her apartment. She hadn't even begun the job, yet (Y/N) couldn't help but feel giddy about her small success.
————- ❈ ————-
A couple of months had passed and (Y/N) was really enjoying her new gig. Sarah turned out to be the sweetest girl the young woman had ever had the pleasure of knowing. She wasn't fussy or troublesome, was very well-mannered, oh-so-friendly and kind, and a fan of using sarcasm here and there, which seemed to be something she picked up from her father. Joel, too, was accommodating to the new addition of their little family. (Y/N) could sense, however, that he was somewhat more reserved - closed, even. It was harder to get to know her employer, but she didn't mind, these things took time.
Leaning against her car, the young woman read her copy of 'Pride and Prejudice' for the 4th or 5th time. Something about it brought her great comfort, especially during the colder months. The festive season was quickly approaching and she wasn't sure if gifts would be appropriate so early-on in her employment. She had zoned out for so long, she didn't have time to register her name being called nor a pair of arms swiftly wrapping around her waist.
"Hey, kiddo." she laughed, hugging the curly-haired girl back.
She let go and stared up at her babysitter with her big round eyes. "Did daddy send you to pick me up?"
"No, I just finished classes and thought I'd swing by."
"What are you reading?"
(Y/N) turned the book to show the cover, "Pride and Prejudice. It's an old book."
"What's it about?"
"Uh- well, it's about a lot of things, but mainly it's the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy who have to overcome their differences to end up together. Hence the title."
"That sounds kind of interesting."
"Yeah, but it takes a lot of hatred and pettiness to get there."
The little girl shook her head in disapproval, "Adults. Why do they have to complicate things?"
"Alright, wise one. Get in before you get cold."
The car ride gave them more time to bond. They sang to Sarah's favourite songs and talked about whatever was on the little genius's mind. It was a unique experience for both of them, two feminine energies collided, something each of them longed for dearly.
At home, (Y/N) spent a significant amount of time helping Sarah with her homework: a bunch of English grammar exercises, essay writing, as well as some algebra. Following their arduous work, the girls decided they deserved some fun and made creamy pasta (one of Sarah's favourites) for dinner. Whilst waiting for the patriarch to come home, they got comfortable on the couch to watch 'Mrs. Doubtfire'.
Unsure if she should speak during the movie, Sarah poked her babysitter's arm. "Do you have siblings?"
"I don't, no. Why do you ask?"
"I don't have any either. Do you ever get lonely?"
(Y/N) wasn't sure where these questions were coming from, but she decided to entertain them anyway. "I used to, growing up. Though my parents did a very good job at making sure I felt loved at home. I miss them a lot, but I'm happy here too."
There was a long pause as Sarah was visibly deep in her thoughts. "I never knew my mom," It shouldn't have shocked the young woman, she assumed Joel and his wife had separated after noting the absence of a maternal presence in their home, but it still came as a surprise. "Daddy said she had her own reasons and that they both agreed for me to live with him."
"Adults always have their own reasons for things, even if it may seem dumb. I'm sure it was a very difficult decision to make for her and that she loves you very much."
"I don't think about her often anymore. My dad can be busy, but he does a good job. He comes to every game, takes me to fairs and carnivals, helps me with school projects. He's also extra cool on vacation."
Something about her remark pulled at (Y/N)'s heart. "I see. He seems like a really great dad." The girls went right back to watching Robin Williams dance around while doing chores, as if they hadn't just touched on a thought-provoking subject.
It was almost 11pm and Joel was nowhere to be seen. Instead of letting the girl pass out on the couch, (Y/N) let her hold onto her back as she carried the sleepy child all the way to her room. Making sure all was right, she put her to bed, closed the window, turned on the night-light, then made her way towards the door.
"You're really cool," Sarah said sleepily with her eyes closed. "I hope you stay for a long time."
No compliment in the world could compare to a kid's heartfelt approval. "I hope so too, sweetie. Good night and good dreams."
Walking back downstairs, the young woman took one look around the house and decided she could pass the time cleaning up here and there. She started by tidying up the living room: folding the throws, fluffing up the pillows, putting the board games back on the bookshelf. Then she moved onto the kitchen where she took the trash out, scrubbed the surfaces clean as silently as she could, put the leftover pasta away, and washed the dishes. Satisfied with her work, she went back up to Sarah's room to leave a glass of water by her bed in case she got thirsty in the middle of the night.
In a house that was dead silent, she heard heavy footsteps. In a short panic, she grabbed a pair of scissors that were lying on the desk and crept up closer to the door. The steps were agonisingly slow and calculated. The woman felt like she was in a slasher movie. Babysitters always die first. The only indication she had of the intruder's whereabouts was from the shadow that was created by the light from the kitchen. This is what you get for not turning on every single light in a house where you're all by yourself. One of the most important rules in horror movies, she thought. The shadow approached closer and closer to the door, and just when she hoped the distance was close enough, she leapt out of the room and went straight for the stranger. Unfortunately, her blow was blocked and her body pushed up against the wall. In a blink, she realised what had happened.
"What the hell, Joel?" she whisper-shouted.
"(Y/N)? What are you still doing here?"
"Doing my job. Couldn't let Sarah stay all by herself with no indication of when you'd be back. That would be irresponsible of me."
He let go of her arms, lazily rubbing his face. "You're right, I'm sorry. I got held up and my cellphone died. I'm so exhausted, I completely forgot you were here."
"It's all good, I didn't hear you arrive either," she paused, noticing the blood running down his left hand. "Oh my God, Joel, you're bleeding!"
He looked at the wound like he hadn't even felt it until then, "Oh, this is nothin'. I had worse accidents at work."
"Still, it could get infected. Please, take a seat in the kitchen, I'll be right back."
She went straight to the bathroom to fetch the first-aid kit. It was essential to know where it was, what it had and how to use everything as someone who had to watch a small human being. She went back downstairs to start working on Joel's injury.
"I'm so sorry. I was so caught up in my own mind, I thought you were an intruder, and it was the only weapon at hand-"
"Please don't apologise. It was my bad, really. I should have announced myself," he spoke as he watched her gently clean the cut with a saline cleansing wipe. "Can't blame you for doing your best to defend yourself. Takes courage."
(Y/N) realised that upon closer inspection, her employer was quite handsome. Dark messy hair, a somewhat upkept beard, broad build, crow's feet that indicated how often he smiled, as well as nose wrinkles that indicated how often he frowned. She carefully applied medical tape to close-off the wound and went to put the kit back where it belonged. On her way down, she noticed him looking around in slight confusion.
"Did you…clean the house?"
"Oh, you know, just lightly tidied up. I'm not a fan of leaving the places I stay at messy. Kind of a habit," she noted the silence and her hands instantly became cold. "God, I'm sorry. Again. I- I didn't even ask if you were okay with me touching your belongings, I got-"
"No, you're good. You're good. Don't sweat it. It's just that," Joel chuckled at her need to be so polite after months of working together. "You didn't have to do this. I can't ask you do to things that aren't part of your job description."
"I know. And I don't mind. Really. It's not like I'm playing Cinderella day and night," she said as they shared a laugh. "My job is to take care of a kid and the environment plays a big role."
(Y/N) picked up her bag, ready to leave for the night, "See you on Monday, Joel."
He reached out to touch her shoulder, then just as quickly removed his hand as if she had burned him. "Uh- do you- are you- um," She looked at him with furrowed brows, it's almost as if he was…flustered? "What are your plans for Christmas? Or, you know, holiday season? If you celebrate anything at all-"
"I won't be able to fly out to see my family this year, so I haven't made any other plans yet. Why do you ask?"
The man scratched his neck sheepishly, only then realising how long he had kept her standing on his porch when it wasn't exactly warm outside. "Would you like to celebrate with us? Sarah would be ecstatic to have you."
Warmth blossomed in her chest at the sudden invitation. So gifts are appropriate. Noted.
"I would love to celebrate the holidays with you guys. But only if you don't mind."
"I don't mind."
"Excellent, then I'll be here."
"Great."
"Good."
They stared at each other for way too long, the nanny realised, bearing the slightest of smiles. "Well, then. Good night, Mr. Miller."
He shook his head at her teasing tactic, "Drive safe, Ms. (L/N)."
There she was again, driving back to her apartment, giggling to herself like a maniac and for what? They invited her to celebrate a holiday. People did that all the time. Office workers, family members, casual friends, new and old lovers, it was truly nothing exceptional. But to her it felt different and she couldn't tell if it was because Sarah liked her enough to want her there or if it was because it came from him. Christmas was three weeks away. Three. Weeks. Away. Gifts. She needed gifts. What would she give them? What did they like? It came to her that she didn't know them that well, which meant she had some investigating to do in the little time she had left for shopping.
————- ❈ ————-
When Christmas finally came, (Y/N) simply could not contain her excitement. She thought long and hard about the presents she would give the Millers, and while they may have appeared simple, she hoped that they would be appreciated. She personally wrapped them up in brown paper and decorated them with stamps, ribbons, and tags, firmly believing in the art of gift-wrapping. Austin had yet to see snow, she didn't think it would ever happen, yet the city was nevertheless bursting with festive spirit. Various lights decorated the trees and bushes in public parks. People hosted diverse markets in the streets where they sold artisanal goods and delicious foods. (Y/N) had gone ice-skating with the Millers a couple of weeks prior. Joel was as bad as she thought he would be; Sarah, however, was a natural. They enjoyed a lively Christmas parade that same day.
After parking in front of the house that was very tastefully decorated with her help, the young woman made her way towards the door, her homemade chocolate tarte in hand, and knocked, taking a second to register a male voice she did not recognise. The door swung open to reveal a man not much older than her, wearing a plaid shirt and dark blue jeans.
Looking her up and down, the stranger gave her a smirk, "And who might you be?"
"Hands off the babysitter, Tommy!" she heard Joel yell from deep inside the house.
"Ah, the famous babysitter!" he exclaimed, opening the door further. "Please, make yourself comfortable."
It smelled of oven-roasted turkey, of cigarette smoke, and of pine from the christmas tree. She found all of them moving about the kitchen: cutting vegetables, setting the table, washing the dishes. She felt like she'd arrived a tad too late.
"Can I help with anything?" she said, awkwardly standing in the middle of the room.
"Nah, everything's good to go," Joel replied as he scrubbed the remaining pots, "(Y/N), this is Tommy, my brother."
Said brother took her hand and placed a tender kiss on the back of it, "Very nice to meet you." Sarah couldn't hide her look of disgust if she tried.
"I didn't know Joel had a brother."
"You didn't tell her about me?" Tommy asked in exaggerated disbelief.
"Was I supposed to? Didn't know I was running a datin' agency."
"Thought that was part of the deal when we agreed to be each other's wingmen."
"Mm, don't recall us ever doing that."
"Well, we did. Spiritually. When we went to Buddy's Place? It was just around the time when Cat-" Tommy's monologue cut short with one sharp glare from Joel. (Y/N) could practically taste the tension emanating from him. Not a big fan of reminiscing the past, she noted.
"You know what, it's no problem. It's the perfect occasion to get to know each other, eh?" the younger brother flashed her a smile. They sure had impressive genes in this family.
Once the eldest Miller was done cleaning, all three adults cracked open a few cold ones to start off the evening. Tommy had the brilliant idea to teach Sarah a few card tricks, peaking their guest's interest.
"What are you teaching a 12-year-old cards for?" (Y/N) amusedly asked. Sarah seemed excited, she was one of those kids who loved to learn, it didn't matter what it was.
"First of all, every member of the Miller family knows how to play cards, we start young. And second, if not me, then who?" He made a good point. Tommy was, after all, the fun brother. "Wanna join in? I'm told I'm a great teacher."
She caught onto the subtle flirt and found herself wanting to return the energy. He was tall, he was dark, he was handsome. He smelled of cigarettes and beer with a hint of citrus notes. Not bad with kids but he wouldn't want any of his own anytime soon; very friendly, which for him also meant outgoing, ballsy, and prone to getting into trouble; charming to the point that he might seduce a few dozen women in one night; funny enough to make people like and maybe even trust him. She didn't mind flirting, but that was the extent of her intentions, and something told her Tommy Miller felt the same way.
They spent some time watching as Tommy performed the most outrageous tricks seen to man, to which his sole excuse was "I'm a bit rusty". He also tried to teach Sarah the art of cheating which, much to his disappointment and sorrow, his niece refused to take part in for moral reasons. (Y/N) noted the elder Miller's absence and excused herself from the oh-so-riveting demonstration of a disappearing card to go look for him. After searching the kitchen, his bedroom, as well as the garage, she stepped outside with a throw blanket and found him sitting on one of the patio chairs.
"What are you doing here? You'll get cold." he said, glancing at her from the side.
"I'm tougher than I look," she answered, nevermind the blanket tightly wrapped around her frame. "Came to keep you company."
"Who said I need any?" She sensed a hint of a playful tone.
"I don't know, you look awfully lonely sitting next to that empty chair." This earned her a light chuckle as she sat down. He didn't look very warm with one hand in his jacket pocket and his collar lifted up to his chin. She proceeded to awkwardly move her chair closer to his and slowly, as if dealing with a wild animal, reached out to wrap the throw around both of them, thankful that it was big enough for the job.
Sensing how still and tense he was, (Y/N) felt the need to talk to lighten the mood, "So, do you always sit outside all by yourself? In the dark? And in complete silence? Brooding-"
"I get the picture, and no," he took a sip from his bottle. "Sometimes I like to sit in my car."
He was capable of humour, which was a refreshing discovery after countless weeks of being formal. She understood wanting to define clear boundaries between employer and employee, but when she was essentially tasked to bond with his child and regularly invited to family activities, the lines naturally blurred, and her curiosity intensified.
"Who's Cat?"
Joel was silent for a second, then let out a reluctant sigh, "Cat was…a girl I knew way back when I was young."
"You're talking like you're in your 50s."
"I'm 34 to be precise, but fine, back when I was younger," he said grumpily. "We dated for a bit, then we didn't. That's how it went with most women I met."
"Oh, is this a Casanova situation?"
"No, more of a 'not ready to commit to a kid' situation," The silence that followed was loud, (Y/N) didn't want to make a sound, afraid he'd realise what he was doing and shut himself off. "I was 21 when Sarah was born. She's the joy of my life, I don't know what I'd do or where I'd be without her, truly. But...it was hard back then for a single dad with a newborn. Never went to college, had to take on side jobs to sustain both of us. My love life wasn't exactly a priority, and when the opportunity presented itself, they fled as soon as they heard the mention of a child."
The next question was risky, but she couldn't think of anything else, "So you haven't dated since your younger days? Not even the hot single moms in your area?"
This made Joel laugh heartily, a sound she loved to listen to, something she wanted to hear more often. "Not really. I mean I've flirted here and there, but Sarah and I are good the way we are now. She's my priority, and I want to make sure my partner's good to my kid too, you know?"
"If you don't mind my asking, what happened to Sarah's mom?" (Y/N) probed further, "Sarah told me-"
"Nothing happened. She left and that was that." The wall was back up. You pushed your luck.
Luckily for them, Sarah called for everyone to play cards. Which was then followed by board games. What they discovered that evening is that (Y/N) was either incredibly skilled at them or simply unbelievably lucky. She and Tommy got on well, making innocent physical contact here and there, high-fiving each other, sharing a lot of laughter, too much laughter for the man that sat across from them. Joel wasn't jealous, he was never jealous, but the sight didn't make him feel happy either.
After a while, the oven beeped, indicating that the turkey was ready. The four of them prepared the table with bowls of salads, bread slices, side-dishes, making space in the centre for the bird accompanied by roasted vegetables. (Y/N) joined in their prayer before they dug into their food. They shared all sorts of life stories: Tommy's time in the army, the most frustrating clients Joel had ever had, more embarrassing anecdotes from Sarah's childhood, funny and dramatic events that occurred while (Y/N) was on vacation. The young woman then brought out the tarte she'd made for the occasion, much to everyone's delight. It was as silky as she hoped it would be, tasting notes of coffee in her chocolate dessert covered in walnut crumbs. The ambience was relaxing, they sat under the dim light of the scented candles dispersed throughout the kitchen, bathing in the sounds of laughter and utensils scraping against the food on their plates.
When all was devoured, they moved the party back to the living room and Tommy decided it was time for presents. Sarah received hers first, which turned out to be a collection of CDs of her favourite musicians from Tommy and a skateboard she'd wanted for a long time from her dad. She hugged each of them very tightly, already excited to put both of her new belongings to use. Then it was Joel's turn to unwrap a brand new wallet gifted by his brother (apparently, he had complained about his old one he owned for more than a decade) and a second-hand guitar from Sarah that she acquired from a friend's cousin then paid for a cleaning by a professional with her own pocket-money (with a little help from uncle Tommy). Tommy received a steel lighter from Joel, who claimed the custom engraving – a hand-drawn cowboy hat on the front and T. Miller on the bottom – was Sarah’s touch. Just when everyone thought they were done, (Y/N) cleared her throat, calling for their attention, whilst dragging her bag closer to where she sat on the floor.
“I brought gifts of my own.” She declared and pulled out a box and gave it to Tommy, whom she'd met only hours ago. “I’m sorry, I took this just in case someone else would be here, but I wish I had gotten to know you sooner to customise the present to your taste- “
“Oh my sweet God,” he muttered, staring at the large crystal bottle of whiskey. “This is one of the fanciest kind around, it ain’t fuckin’ cheap either!”
“You’re lucky Tommy here is a whiskey connoisseur.” Joel said from his laid-back position on the couch.
The younger brother engulfed her in a warm hug soon after, “You got my taste just right, sweetheart, thank you.”
The room was silent as she extended a purple envelope to Sarah, who sat across from her. It didn’t seem all too exciting. The kid in question opened the envelope, eyeing her babysitter, who herself seemed a bit nervous. The silence in the room was suddenly broken as the 12-year-old squealed her hardest squeal, forcing both Millers to cover their ears.
“It’s two VIP tickets to the Halican Drops concert in Houston next year!” she exclaimed, launching herself at the now grinning woman. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
“How’d you get those? I thought they were sold out.” her father asked, clearly having gone through the struggle of standing in long queues to make his daughter happy.
It was difficult to breathe with a prepubescent child sitting in your lap as she held you in a death-grip. “I have an old friend who happens to work at the venue.” she replied, accepting the kiss on the cheek from Sarah who sat back on the ground, practically buzzing as she stared at the pieces of paper in her hands.
Lastly, (Y/N) got up to stand in front of Joel as he looked up at the object she extended in complete surprise.
“You really didn’t have to- “
“Just open it.”
So he did. What he found inside was a Prussian blue knit scarf.
“I noticed you never wear one, and it’s pretty chilly out, so I figured I’d knit you one myself. Finished it just in time a couple of days ago. The color looks flattering on you.” she explained, blushing deeper and deeper with every word. She failed to notice that he, too, was heating up.
“Well, I’ll be damned. This woman can bake, she can knit, she’s smart, and she plays cards like a pro. I mean what can’t you do?” And while she knew Tommy was teasing, she couldn’t help but redden even more.
“I’m pretty proud of my mixing skills,” she added, making him pause with a face that read ‘no way’. “I’m a bartender on the weekends.”
She had barely finished her sentence when she yelped as Tommy scooped her up and over his shoulder. “That’s it! I’m taking this one with me. It was nice to see ya, big brother!”
(Y/N) squealed and wiggled around as much as she could to try to get him to let her down whilst Sarah did her best to save her friend by clinging to one of her uncle’s legs in protest. It was one chaotic scene unfolding in front of Joel, who had not moved from his seat, still staring at the scarf in his hands as he ran his thumb over the soft wool.
After all that excitement, the household members spent a few more hours watching ‘Home Alone 2’ and ‘Jingle All the Way’, DVDs Joel had bought earlier that week. During the viewing, he caught himself glancing at the woman curled up against the arm rest less than a few feet away from him. She remained completely oblivious, amused by the tomfoolery happening on-screen. He left the room for a moment to dispose of his empty bottle in the kitchen. On the short way there, he realised he was slightly tipsy. While he was rummaging through the drawers, he heard someone come up behind him.
“Looking for this?” he turned around to see (Y/N) holding up the bottle-opener. She walked up to the counter and opened the bottle in his hand, brushing her cold fingers against his warm ones in the process.
“You’re cold.” he commented bluntly.
“Yeah, my extremities get cold easily. That’s why I walk around in gloves and thick socks as soon as the temperature starts dropping.”
She threw away her own empty bottle and swiftly turned around to walk back into the living room, when she felt his hand wrap around her wrist ever so gently.
“I didn’t get to thank you back there. You know, for the present?” he spoke softly, giving her a rare smile. “It was real nice of you.”
She noticed the way his pupils were slightly wider than usual and his stance that seemed to swing back-and-forth ever so subtly. “Joel, are you…are you drunk?”
“It takes a lot more than a few bottles of IPA to get me there. I’m just fine.” he whispered, for what reason she wasn’t sure, then unexpectedly walked up the stairs to his bedroom. He didn’t leave her to contemplate her next actions for too long because he emerged not even a minute later, holding his right hand behind his back.
They found themselves standing closer than they should have, but neither of them seemed to care as Joel revealed the mystery object.
“Merry Christmas, (Y/N).”
It was the most beautiful edition of ‘Jane Eyre’ she had ever laid her eyes on. Red leather hardback with golden accents all over it, including the fore-edges, it looked like something out of a royal library.
“How did you know?” her question was vague, but she knew he knew what she meant.
“Sarah told me about the books that you like, said you haven’t read this one in a long time.”
Her warm embrace came to him as a surprise, but in the state of mind he was in, not only did he accept it, but it felt good, it felt right to hug her back.
“It happens to be one of my favourites, so thank you. Really. For all of the things you’ve done for me so far.”
The two held onto each other for longer than needed until Tommy’s call brought them back to reality. The other Miller eyed the returning pair suspiciously as they took their respective places on the couch and went back to watching the movie in comfortable silence. Only he noticed the red book in her possession and fought hard to stop himself from smiling.
Later that night, after all the dishes had been washed, the leftovers put away, and the only child put to bed, Tommy reluctantly sat in the back of the cab Joel had called for him. I am not fetching my brother from a jail cell on Christmas Day, he'd told him. When he walked back into his home, he saw a sleeping figure on the couch, covered by one of the throws.
He went into his bedroom and took no more than 10 minutes to replace all of his linen with fresh ones from the closet in the hallway. He wasn’t going to let his guest sleep on a couch, especially not under a row of windows or next to the entrance door. Carefully picking her up, and she was one deep sleeper, he made his way back to his bed to lay her down on the new sheets.
My extremities get cold easily.
He changed his usual blanket for a thicker one then grabbed a pillow and went to make his bed downstairs. He picked up the scarf lying on the coffee table once more and unfolded it entirely, only then noticing the tiny initials embroidered in grey into one of the ends – J.M. Upon an even closer inspection, he realised it smelled of vanilla and flowers.

Monday
It was the mother of Mondays as you hurried out of your apartment, your pot of coffee left forgotten on the kitchen counter simply because you were running super late. You were heading to a coffee shop for your meeting with the publisher anyway.
Your last meeting had been promising, so you had your hopes up about this one. The problem was, you were late. And your publisher, Sarah, was particular about time. Praying and hoping she would forgive you just this once, you dodged foot traffic that was perpetual on the streets of New York and stumbled into the equally busy cafe.
No sign of her.
Damn it.
Did she leave?
A part of you was hopeful that she was late too. That thought was shut up rather quickly when your phone buzzed with an email from Sarah.
Hi Y/N,
I hope you’re well. I’m sorry we couldn’t meet today, you know how I am with time.
I should have done this face to face but, unfortunately the team has decided against continuing the contract. I really did try my best but you know the decision isn’t all up to me. You can call me if you want to discuss anything.
I’m really very sorry. Stay in touch and keep writing.
Regards,
Sarah Waddington
A bunch of emotions went through you as you read and re-read the email. There had been rejections in your life in the past, but none of them stung or made you mad as this.
Who does this over an email?
You shoved your phone inside your purse angrily and looked around. You were in severe need of coffee, the only pick-me-up that could work.
Making a beeline for the counter, you pushed past people and stood behind a man wearing a black suit who was furiously whispering over his comms to someone.
Your phone buzzed again. This time it was your best friend calling you, the line was moving rather slow and you needed to vent.
The man in front must have changed his order at least three times adding to your frustration which you didn’t hide. You wondered who the person on the other line was who was unable to decide on a simple coffee order.
As your friend went on about her weekend, you moved ahead to order yourself a large Americano, this day called for nothing else but a strong cup of joe; the man in the suit grabbed his coffees and a bag of muffin and turned the opposite way, straight into you.
Iced coffee spilled down your blouse and some of it on his crisp white shirt, the paper bag turning soggy wet as both of you cursed out loud. Some of your piping hot americano managed to spill down your hand in the process too.
“Are you fucking kidding me??” You yelled, part in fury, part in pain as your hand stung.
Happy Hogan profusely apologized as he tried to grab as many tissues he could to help you. The commotion had gathered enough attention in the cafe already to add to your embarrassment.
“I am really sorry, I have a spare shirt in my car if you’d like. Please ma’am.”
He kept insisting, both of you staring at your blouse that was stained beyond saving point. Uttering a small ‘fine’ you followed him out to a rather sleek Tesla Roadster.
A man sitting at the back rolled the windows down as you two approached, a pair of brown eyes peeking through expensive looking sunglasses taking in your appearance with an amused smirk.
“Boss, would you mind passing me that shirt at the back please?”
The man continued to gaze at you for a few more seconds before paying heed to his, you assumed drivers’ request. You stared back, taking in the man’s sharp suit, a rather well maintained anchor beard and eyes that checked you out shamelessly.
“Tony?”
The other guy said more forcefully this time, breaking up your little staring match. ‘Tony’ fumbled around a bit before throwing a large white t-shirt that said ‘I survived my trip to NYC’ towards the guy you found who was named Happy Hogan as they exchanged a conversation.
“Honestly Happy, I don’t feel so secure around you and by the looks of it, neither does this lady or coffee for that matter. Why did I promote you to head of security again?”
“Because I’m the only one you trust and the only one who unfortunately can put up with your tantrums.”
“What tantrums? And will I get my coffee today?”
Tony huffed, making you hide your grin behind your hand as you accepted the t-shirt from Happy.
“Here. I’ve got all the caffeine I need for the day. Stains and burns included.” You held out your cup for him, frowning when he looked at Happy instead.
“Yeah, I’ll take that. Boss doesn’t like being handed things.” Happy gratefully took the coffee you offered and gave it to Tony.
What an entitled prick! You thought.
“What address should I send this back to?” You held the t-shirt up, Tony waving his hand in dismissal.
“Oh keep it. Mr. Hogan has a closet full of cheesy, oversized graphic tees. You can send the dry cleaning bill over to Stark Industries.”
He added with a small smirk, giving your blouse one more thorough glance.
“Oh no. I have plenty of pristine white blouses that haven’t had coffee spilled over. But thank you for your generosity, Mr. Stark I presume?” You crossed your arms over your chest.
“The one and only.”
Happy watched the two of you interact like a tennis match, clearing his throat audibly to break off your staring contest yet again.
“See you around, Miss..?”
“Y/N.” I really hope not, you thought to yourself, giving them a polite smile.
Taking your leave, the two men sped off, leaving you with an amused grin and Tony Stark’s unforgettable gaze that seemed to still linger.
That evening the doorbell rang, it was nobody but a large package with a little note.
Another pristine white blouse to add to your collection. Though this is more dinner worthy, I feel. What do you say, Ms. Wordsmith?
Tony Stark
Inside the box sat a satin white top, your size, surprisingly, and a lovely bouquet of beautiful white hydrangeas.
It was an awfully bold yet sweet gesture from someone you encountered for less than ten minutes. By the handwritten note, Tony had researched you in advance, now, it was your turn.
Tony’s POV
“I’ll be honest with you Ms. Wordsmith, the thing is, ever since I saw you at the coffee shop, drenched in coffee, I couldn’t get you out of my head.”
Okay, what? Did those words actually leave my mouth? That wasn’t supposed to be uttered in front of her. Sure, the statements were true, but, whatever happened to the smooth-talker, unapologetic womanizer Tony! He was back at the lab probably judging the shit outta this guy.
The air conditioning was faulty in this place, I think, feeling sweat beads trickle down my back. The fanciest restaurants in New York with the most beguiling lady sitting across and all my mind focuses on is the goddamn AC?
“Well, I’d be lying if I said I haven’t been thinking about you too, Mr. Stark. I think you’re possibly the most spoiled bratty billionaire I’ve met.”
Her words stirred something in me, my cock twitched curiously at them as I smirked, cleverly hiding my shock at the honesty. No woman was ever this frank before, this was new, intriguing.
I could tell she was interested, just by the way all of her focus was on me, her body angled towards mine, her gorgeous eyes taking in every movement, as if memorizing it.
I hadn’t been subtle either, her personality, her curves, her aura were all too inviting for me to back down. Ever since I laid eyes on her, I knew I had to meet her again, keep meeting her for reasons unknown.
Other girls I’d met were pretty much cut from the same cloth, pretty things wearing tight dresses that accentuated their boobs enough to skip dessert and take them home. That usually ended in Pepper kicking them out in the morning before any of them had a chance to say ‘we should do this again sometime’.
Not Y/N though.
I wanted to listen to her, speak to about absolutely nothing, bring her home, explore every bit of that smart mouth, run my hands all over her soft skin, and claim her as mine…
Whoa there! Some boundaries, Stark. It’s only the first date.
“Earth to Tony?”
I snapped back to reality with her hand waving in front of my face, dear God, I wasn’t on my best game tonight.
“Did you say something I missed?”
Damn it. Obviously she had. What a question even?!
“I just wanted to know if you’d like to split a chocolate cake with me?” Her eyebrows raised in wonder as the waitress patiently stood next to the table, waiting for me to give some sort of reply.
Geez. Was this woman for real? I could’ve kissed her senseless right there. I don’t think any of my previous dates had even uttered the word cake before, let alone chocolate.
“Right uh, sure. Yes.” I cleared my throat and croaked, downing the rest of my drink, giving myself a mental shake.
“Are you alright?” She asked, leaning forward, concern filled in her eyes.
“Perfect. I was just preoccupied with something, I’m sorry. Tell me about where you grew up.”
The whiskey provided some liquid courage for me to get up from my seat and join her on her side of the booth. There was plenty of space but I had to make sure our knees touched, I couldn’t sit too far away, not now.
Angling my body toward her, I laid my arm against the backrest as she spoke, willing my eyes not to slip down to her tempting lips or the way her gesturing moved her blouse slightly to reveal her cleavage.
As her lips moved, a part of my brain registered the words while the other hornier part focused on the way her lips formed the perfect O, the way her tongue danced along making me wonder how it would feel wrapped around my length. The sounds that would leave her as I fucked that pretty little mouth, then her, and make her mine.
“Honestly, the whole thing was such a shitshow, I would not mind a sugar daddy at this point!” She laughed, making something flutter inside my chest cavity.
“A sugar daddy huh? How about an eccentric, genius billionaire?”
I smirked, letting my fingers skim the soft skin of her shoulders, pleased at the effect I had on her as she blushed.
Something changed in her eyes as she shifted closer to me, curiosity replaced by something darker, more carnal.
“Don’t look at me like that.” I murmured, looking down at her lips that screamed to be kissed.
“Like what?”
“Like you’re begging me to devour you until you scream my name.”
That very moment, both of us shifted closer until our lips finally met. That very moment, I knew I was in trouble.
The kiss was everything I had imagined and everything I hadn’t. She tasted like a dream, a mix of chocolate and berries mixed with a bit of wine she’d been drinking. I couldn’t get enough.
My lips glided over hers smoothly, tongue peeking out testing the waters at first but as her hands found their way up my chest, I knew she wanted more.
I could’ve been more drunk on her than the whiskey as we kissed, the restaurant had faded away into oblivion long ago.
Her tongue skimmed along my lower lip shyly, making me smirk against her mouth and card my fingers through her hair, pulling her closer.
“Mind if we get out of here?” I breathed, momentarily halting the kissing to look into her eyes.
She nodded, unable to form words as she bit her bottom lip to stifle a grin, her eyes swimming with the same want and desire that was probably reflecting in mine.
“Do your worst, Stark.”

Kitty (part 3)
Part 1. Part 2.
Pairings: Rei Suwa x reader Mainly fluff and, hey, let's introduce some sexual tension... Warnings: Past descriptions of non-consensual touching , gun violence, descriptions of blood -----
You swallow down the yawn that threatens to escape your mouth. Your abductor’s voice circles round your head. “Oh, am I boring you?” That had always got you a smack pretty quick but, really, what didn’t?
Kazuki is engrossed on something on his phone and Rei is gaming as usual. It’s been a long weekend. You’re definitely Miri’s favourite new plaything and her energy is unrelenting. The weather had been pretty miserable so the three of you had tried to keep her occupied with endless games of hide and seek, crafts, video games, books, playing hairdressers – she was fascinated with how quick you could braid your hair – and endless questions.
Your second attempt at biting down the yawn goes a little awry and Rei gives you a look. “Sorry, I-I feel p-pretty ex-exhaus-ex…”
“Exhausted?” Kazuki cuts in, eyes still focused on the phone screen. You nod and get to your feet.
“I t-think I’ll go to b-bed if…” You stop, reminding yourself before they can that no, there’s no need for ‘if that’s okay’. “Erm, goodnight.”
“Sleep well.”
“Night, Kitty.”
Once you’ve made it up the stairs and closed the bedroom door, Kazuki puts his phone down on the coffee table, readjusts in his seat and sighs, waiting for his roommate to respond. He’d timed it with a particularly loud burst of gunfire from the game, so he sighs again but it becomes clear that Rei had, in fact, heard him the first time but is not reacting deliberately.
“She never says my name.” The blonde grumbles.
Rei replies after a beat. “Who?”
“Who?!” He scoffs. “Kitty!”
“Oh. I thought you meant Miri.”
“Miri says my name all day long, why would I be talking about her?” He crosses his arms. “Kitty hardly says that much to me, come to think of it. But she’s always talking to you and Miri. Is she scared of me?”
“No.”
“Does she not like me?” He pouted.
Rei thinks for a moment. You’ve never said anything to suggest so. “She likes you. She said you’re nice.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
“You don’t listen.” Rei mashes the buttons frantically.
“Wha…? I don’t listen? I listen all the time!”
“No, you don’t.”
“Says you. Give me an example.”
“You don’t let her finish.”
“Huh?”
“If she stutters over a word, you interrupt and say it for her. You think it’s helping her, but she thinks she’s annoying you when she struggles. You just need to listen.”
Kazuki blinks slowly, “And how did you come to this conclusion?”
“I did research.” He shuts down the game. “And I listen.” Rei gets up and grunts, “Tired too. I’m going to bed.”
Kazuki is left on the couch, stunned, before Rei pauses.
“Your name has another syllable too.”
And then he’s gone.
--
The next morning, Kazuki returned from dropping Miri off at daycare. You were putting away the rest of the breakfast dishes and from the sounds from the bathroom, Rei was in the tub and not sleeping in it.
“Thanks, Kitty.”
“It’s o-okay.” You smile, before continuing on with your task. “I put on the w-w-w-washer too…” – Kazuki mouths along with ‘washer’ – is that why he’s staring at your mouth so intensely? – “..before Rei st-started his bath.”
“Aw, you didn’t have to do that!”
“I l-like keeping my hands oc-oc-occupied.” He mouths along again and you frown. “A-are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m great, thanks! How are you?”
“I’m all r-right.” A pause. “Is there some-t-thing on my face?”
“Oh, no, no! I, er… Never mind.” He scratches the back of his head and smiles, creasing up his eyes. “Hey, I was gonna go shopping for groceries later, if you wanted to come. I’m sure we can drag Rei along too, if we promise he get some snacks.”
You nod at that. “Y-yeah, sounds n-nice.”
“Er, great. Okay. I’m gonna go check my emails. Bye!” He darts up the stairs, cursing himself internally for being so weird. You still hadn’t said his name and surely he’d crept you out with his intense stare session. Ugh.
Later, you’re watching Rei game again, performing a particularly brutal combo on an opponent. Kazuki is still upstairs but you can hear typing from his room.
“I-isn’t that c-cheating?”
“No.”
“It d-doesn’t seem l-like good et-eti-et-etiquette.” You cursed inwardly for going for that word, but Rei never seems to grow impatient with you.
“Everyone does it, it’s a good trick.”
“Oh.”
A pause for a few moments.
“When does Kazuki want to go the grocery store?”
“I’m n-not sure. Later, h-he said.” You dug your nails into your palm – a habit you were trying to shake. “He was being a lit-little w-weird, though.”
“How?”
“He was s-st-staring at my mouth when I w-was talking.”
“Hm.” Rei mashes a lot of buttons in a combo. “Upset you never say his name - apparently.”
“Oh.”
“Cos it’s long?” He questions.
You nodded, though he’s staring at the screen. “I get stuck o-on it some-t-times and it’s fru-frus-frustrating.”
“You could use a nickname.” He pauses. “I’ve heard people call him Zuki.”
“Zuki?” You repeated, wanting to make sure you got it right.
“Yeah. He’ll like it.”
You’ve been to the grocery store before with Kazuki – he’d suggested you start to reacquaint yourself with the outside world and you’d jumped at the chance. The trip to the 398 yen store had been a lot of sensory overload, but you’d enjoyed it in reflection. It was nice not to be trapped in the same four walls every day.
“What was that other thing we needed?” Kakashi mused, staring down at the cart. Rei had dumped cookies and instant noodles on top and his meal plan has gone awry.
“C-cu-cuc-cucumber, I…“
“Jeez, just spit out already, lady!” A large man to your left spits out as he stomps by with his own cart. “No pretty face is worth listening to that.”
Your heart stops, your insecurities resurfacing instantly as you shut your mouth and look down at your shoes. Idiot, idiot, idiot. Kazuki and Rei must be absolutely sick of you butchering words.
“What the hell, man? Apologise.” Kazuki demands, but the large man is now halfway down the aisle, heading to the check-out.
Rei recognizes him from a few aisles – you’ve crossed paths a few times today. Truthfully, he wants to pull out his gun and shoot the man right between the eyes, but he knows he won’t get away with that in the store. So, he’ll follow him home, tail him for a day or so and then find his moment to strike, take him to one of those warehouses by the docks and put his extensive CV of torture techniques to use… An arm yanks at his and he’s pulled out of his train of thought of how many ways he could make the man plead for his life by Kazuki. The blonde knows exactly what he’s been thinking – you can’t work for that long together without recognizing each other’s tells. You’re now staring sullenly into the cart, annoyed at yourself. You’d never had a stutter before all this, why couldn’t you just shift it? It was an effort to get every single word out – your brain screaming at you that it was a mistake, that you’ll muck up and be punished, and now the man mocking you further down the aisle just seemed to prove it right. It was better to be quiet.
Rei squeezes your arm just below the elbow, offering a small smile before he wanders off down the aisle in pursuit of his target.
“Hey, don’t listen to him, okay? You’re fine.” Kazuki murmurs, putting a hand on the small of your back and pushing the cart in the opposite direction. “Let’s go look at ice cream, huh?” You want to go back to the apartment, go to the bedroom and hide under the covers. Kazuki tries to keep the conversation up through the freezer aisle, asking you questions or pointing out something interesting, but it’s very one-sided. You haven’t said another word since, resorting back to nods and shakes and staring at your shoes.  He doesn’t want to push you in such a public environment either so you soon settle into companionable silence before he calls it a day and heads towards the counters to check-out, making sure the jerk is not in sight.
You leave the store, carrying a bag whilst Kazuki takes two. He doesn’t seem overly concerned by Rei’s absence, but you come across the assassin leaning up against their car, apparently waiting for you both.
“What did you get up to?” Kazuki raises an eyebrow.
Rei shrugs and takes the bag of groceries from you, waiting for Kazuki to unlock the car so they can deposit them in the trunk. You nod a thanks and as you slide into the backseat, you hear a man cry out that someone has slashed all four of his tyres. Kazuki can’t help but grin.
The car ride is silent, you preoccupy your mind by staring out the window. It’s only when you’re back in the safety of the apartment that Kazuki broaches the subject again.
“Hey, don’t take anything that shit said to heart, okay? He was a jerk.” The blonde reassures as you place the bags on the counter. Rei is heading towards the treadmill, throwing his shirt off onto the back of the sofa. He needs to run off his anger. Slashing the asshole’s tyres could only appease him so much.
“T-thanks, Zuki.” You whisper, and his face lights up.
“Zuki?” He repeats in disbelief, a little too loud. Rei’s feet begin to pound against the treadmill.
Your stomach twists. “Is that o-okay? Rei said it w-would be. I’ll keep trying, obvi-ob-obviously. I just get s-so stuck.”
“Of course! Anything you say is fine and in any way. You’re doing really well with it all – I can’t imagine how hard it’s been for you. Don’t let some random asshole take away what you’ve achieved, okay?” He gives you a bright smile and starts emptying one of the grocery bags.
You follow suit before you catch sight of Rei, building up his pace. Your eyes are drawn to his toned abs, the scars that decorate his chest, the way his jeans hug around his hips…
It wasn’t like you hadn’t seen a man shirtless before but something about Rei just caught your attention more – perhaps the fact that he was kind to you? Your abductor’s security team had been in decent shape, but they had been more than a little handsy when they had a drink in them and they were hardly going to whisk you away from their boss in an act of love. A hand a little too high for comfort on your thigh, a smack, a grope – that was as far as it ever went since Kenzo. Kenzo was your captor’s right-hand man and he’d perhaps become a little too comfortable in the position, confident that the close relationship he and your captor held put him above such orders. He grabbed hold of you one night after they’d got through more sake bottles than you could count, crushed you against the wall, pinning your arms down by your side and forced his tongue inside your mouth as you’d gasped for breath. He’d tasted disgusting – stale cigarettes and booze and a lack of dental hygiene. A loud bang pierced your eardrum a moment or so later, Kenzo releasing his grip and falling to the floor, wailing. Blood pumped out of his knee cap, your abductor standing in the doorway, gun in hand. “I told you, she’s off limits.” You’d been punished too, naturally – scrubbed the blood off the floorboards before you were locked in the broom cupboard for two days. When you were finally permitted to leave, you’d had to crawl on your hands and knees, dehydrated and starving…
Kenzo walked with a limp till his dying day and no-one tried to kiss you again – a small mercy – not least your captor. Sometimes he made you stay in his room all night, on the floor at the bottom of his bed like a dog. He’d haul you up in the early hours of the morning, throwing you out into the corridor, stiff and disheveled and always when a contingent had arrived back after some sort of assignment. You’d suspected that your captor was not interested in you or any woman in that way, much more preferring the company of certain gentlemen and just using you, very much as he did until the end of his life, as a shield.
You wonder if Rei would taste of Kazuki’s cooking and soda.
“…don’t you think, Kitty?” Kazuki’s voice cuts through your thoughts.
“H-huh?” You tear your gaze away from Rei but you’re sure he’s smirking.
“I said, we should probably get this stuff put away.” You grab a bag and head to the fridge, with the hope that the cool air might hide the heat that’s risen in your cheeks.
--
Kazuki returns from visiting Kyu – no further information about you but a new assignment in hand. They’ve been meticulously planning it now for a few days, thinking about different tactics but all suggest that it’s going to take the best part of a day in which to complete. Part of it involved Kazuki broaching the subject of you picking up Miri from daycare for them. He reiterated it was not an order, or an obligation, or a command, just a favour and only if you felt comfortable enough to do it. You’d accepted eagerly, you were looking forward to getting out of the apartment a bit more, despite the grocery store incident. It had knocked your conversational confidence, but Miri has kept asking you to read her stories so much you can’t refuse – you suspect Kazuki’s bribed her with pudding cups as she usually favours Rei. For the past two days whilst Rei has been out sourcing equipment from Kazuki’s list of essentials, the blonde has walked with you back and forth from daycare, drilling the route into your mind. He’s terrified you’ll get lost, or Miri will pull you off course if she sees a dog or a sweet potato truck. He’s printed out a map and even bought you your own phone, put in his and Rei’s numbers – who else were you going to add, really? – and showed you the maps app that flashes a blue little dot where you are. You swear your dream last night was just you walking there and back.
Miri’s tucked up in bed and Kazuki has been on his laptop most of the evening, typing away. You thought initially he was working on some final mission prep but it couldn’t be, since Rei wasn’t involved and he’d been swigging from a can of beer, periodically chuckling. You’re sat on the sofa next to Rei as usual, watching him work his way through a game called Hitman. Kazuki bought it for him in the hopes it would make Rei’s work ‘less flashy’, but a lot of it so far has just been Rei shooting everyone and anyone. You’re sat cross legged as Kazuki comes over and sits down on the armchair, leaning forward with his chin in his hands.
“Kitty, I’ve been thinking,” you turn to him. “You need to learn how to say no.”
“I do?” You frown. You say no to things, it feels like you say no all the time these days.
“I mean, if someone tells you to do something you don’t want to do, I worry you’ll agree. It’s a big, scary world out there and there are nefarious people waiting to take advantage of your sweet nature. We want your independence and confidence to grow, but we want you to be safe.”
“Someone’s been on their parenting messaging board again,” Rei quips.
“It’s a useful resource! Let’s practice.” He stands up, pulling you with him and putting his hands on your shoulders. “Okay, say you’re out on the street and someone asks if you’d like to see the puppies in their van.”
You frown. “Does t-that really h-happen?”
“Well, it might.” He releases you before he deepens his voice. “Well, little lady, don’t you want to see the cute dogs? You just need to hop in my van here.”
“No, t-thank you.”
“Good!”
“Did you get Kitty and Miri confused, Kazuki?” Rei stares at his roommate as he gets up, heading to the fridge. He can tell Kazuki is now catastrophizing. His plans had been going a little south since Miri rocked on the scene but the route to the daycare is nearly a straight line and if he trusts Rei to do it on the regular, you’ll be fine.
“Well, okay. Er… Cults! There’s so many cults around here. They’ll try and offer you leaflets but you shouldn’t interact, okay?”
“N-no to cults and l-leaflets, g-got it.”
“Can I try one?” Rei returns from the kitchen with a can of beer in hand.
“Sure.”
“On your knees.” You’re going to have friction burn from the rug at the speed of which you obey.
“Rei!” Kazuki berates, smacking the assassin on the back of the head. “What the hell, man?!”
“I thought she’d say no.” If you were looking up, you’d have caught the flustered look on Rei’s face.
Kazuki rubs the bridge of his nose. He can feel a headache coming on already. “Get up, Kitty.”
“No…?”
“Good job.” Rei gives you a thumbs up and Kazuki curses.
“I’m sorry.” You get to your feet. “I-I think I understand, I do. I just… I don’t k-know what I want to do m-most of the time. But I w-won’t join any c-cults. Promise.” You hesitate. “Unless I really w-want to.”
Kazuki squeezes your shoulder. “It’s okay, Kitty. I probably went a bit too hard. I want you to be safe out there, get out of the apartment on your own, you know?”
You nod – you want that too, but there’s a sinking feeling in your stomach that he’s trying to set you up to leave.
--
The next morning Miri’s holding your hand and giggling at Kazuki, who has insisted on walking 30 metres behind you on the way to daycare as the final test before they head off for their mission. As you approach the gates, he jogs to catch you both up and gives you a beaming smile.
“L-look, M-Miri, Papa Zuki was behind us t-the whole t-time!” You tease and Miri winks back at you, pressing a finger up to her lips.
“Ms Anna!” Kazuki waves at the woman you presume is Miri’s daycare teacher. She smiles and waves back before approaching. Miri is still holding your hand but is bouncing on the balls of her feet, clearly excited.
“Hi, Kazuki! Hi, Miri,” she crouches down to Miri’s level. “And who’s this you’ve brought along?”
“This is Kitty!” Miri squeals. “She lives with us, in Papa Rei’s bedroom.”
“Miri!” Kazuki baulks as Anna laughs politely and you can feel your face flush red. The mothers surrounding you seem to now be all engrossed in their phones, typing furiously.
“The oil baron has a mistress?!” Someone exclaims from the other side of the playground, before slamming their hand over their mouth.
“It’s true!”
“No, no, not like that.” Kazuki waves his hands. “Papa Rei doesn’t really use his bedroom so he kindly offered it out to Kitty.” The mothers are still typing furiously around you.
“Papa Rei sleeps in the tub.” Miri nods, solemnly.
“Oh, children and their imaginations!” Kazuki rubs Miri’s head with a bit more force than is really necessary.
“Hi, Ms Anna,” you managed to get out without a stutter – thankfully - hoping to move the conversation on from sleeping arrangements.
“Nice to meet you, Kitty.” She bows her head politely. “I think I’ve heard Miri mention you before now.”
“Yep! We thought it would be good for you two to meet. Kitty is going to being dropping Miri off and picking her up some days when Rei and I out of town on work. It’ll be Kitty this afternoon, if that’s okay.”
“Oh, wonderful!” Ms Anna smiles. “Where are you off to?”
“They’re going to the Comedy In Oil Convention!” Miri exclaims and you bite your lip to hold in a laugh. Miri has often told you tales of her comedian and oil baron papas.
“How… niche.”
--
“How’d it go?” Rei is putting the last of the bags by the door when you get home. He’s dressed in another well-tailored suit, his hair tied-up and gloves on, similar to how he was when you first met. He looks good and you’re suddenly extremely conscious of the outfit you put together this morning in comparison.
“Miri told Ms Anna that Kitty sleeps in your bedroom.” Kazuki sighed.
“She does.” Rei doesn’t see his point.
“Well, yeah, but it made it sound… You know what? Never mind. We should get going. Are you going to be okay, Kitty? There’s lunch and dinner and breakfast in the fridge…” Kazuki starts listing off things and then pulling open random drawers to point out where things are kept – things you have seen or used a fair few times before by now.
“Dude, she lives here.” Rei sighs.
“I know, but this is the first time we’re leaving them both for so long!” Kazuki pulls you into his chest and hugs you tightly. The man is a hugger and a crier all right. “And you can call us at any time, okay?” You won’t – you know what their job entails and the last thing you’d want to do is interrupt.
“Kazuki, we need to go.”
“Okay, okay. I’m good. See you!” Kazuki sniffs loudly and rubs his eyes on his sleeve, before he picks up a load of the bags and heads out the door. Rei remains in position.
“Take care, Rei.” You smile shyly, not quite sure why hasn’t followed his tearful roommate.
“Yeah.” He stands awkwardly for a second before he pulls you forward and very lightly wraps his arms around you and squeezes, in what you assume is a copy of Kazuki’s embrace, your arms pinned down by your side. He smells nice and he’s warm, but it ends all too soon as he releases you, picks up the remaining bags and dives out the door.
Oh.

Hey can write a fic where r is tony kid (dont care for the gender) tony was called to pick up r thinking they did something bad but instead its this
Tumblr media
Like r used bear glue and got multiple of them stuck all of the school years later r is part of the avengers and they find out about this little prank
the school incident // tony stark x daughter!reader
summary: you've always been the type to enjoy pulling a good prank. unfortunately, your newest idea gets you caught and in major trouble. what happens when your dad (and the avengers) find out?
wc: 1k~
warnings: a giant penis (NOT nsfw i promise)
a/n: this was so much fun and i am SO sorry it's so late <3
Tumblr media
When Tony got the text message that you needed to be picked up from school, he freaked out. His brain ran through so many scenarios so fast it made him dizzy; what if you’d gotten in a fight? What if you started a fight? What if you and Peter messed up big time?
He shook his head to clear his mind, and ran down to the garage.
“Everything alright, Boss?” Happy asked, eyebrows knitted together. Tony just nodded, and slipped into his car. The fifteen minute ride to your school was filled with worry from him, the foot that wasn’t pressing on the gas pedal bouncing up and down repeatedly. He told himself to breathe; you didn’t need your dad to walk into the office panicking like a mad man.
He pulled into the parking space as quickly as possible, rushing to the all too familiar Principal’s office. “Hi, I’m here for Y/N Stark?,” he told the receptionist. She seemed to forget how to use words when she motioned him to the back. A blush rose on her face as he left, and if it were any other time Tony would have flirted with her just to embarrass you.
The air in the office was tense, and you sat in one of the seats with a blush on your face. You looked up to see your dad’s relieved expression that quickly turned into one of frustration when he realized you weren't hurt.
“Good afternoon, Mr.Stark. I’m sorry to pull you out of whatever..business you were dealing with, but Y/N pulled something we just can’t ignore.”
“It’s perfectly fine, sir. What did she do?” he asked him, his eyes narrowing at you across the table.
“I don’t think there is a delicate way to put this, Mr.Stark, so I’m just going to lay it all out for you. Miss Stark was caught on video supergluing what seems to be a massive..sex toy,” she muttered under her breath,”with one Peter Parker. His guardian has already been made aware of this and appropriate action has been taken. ”
Tony was, for once, speechless. He looked at you, the Principal, and back at you a few times. You could feel your ears begin to turn red as the silence got longer and longer, doing your best not to burst out laughing as it would only make the situation worse. His jaw was wide open, and he finally snapped back to reality when you reached across the table to shut it for him.
“What the absolute hell?” He yelled, forgetting where you both were for a second. You blushed even harder, hiding a snicker behind your sleeve despite your dad’s very obvious anger.
“I have somewhere to be, but I hope you have a good day. Please send me an email with the information about what you’re going to do with her. I assure you this will be taken care of,” he rambled gruffly, grabbing your arm and dragging you out of the office quickly.
On your way out, you passed the foyer. Despite your best efforts, Tony peered through the blinds to get a look at the “issue.” It was big enough to be seen from the office, and this just seemed to piss your dad off more. He averted his eyes quickly. His jaw was clenched so hard, you contemplated sticking your ring between his teeth as a joke, but decided against it knowing it would only make the situation worse.
The drive home was tense. His fist was tightly wrapped around the gearshift, only taking his eyes off the road to throw a glare or two at you. The minute you arrived at the tower, he grabbed your arm once again and took you to the personal floor.
“What were you thinking?! You could have jeopardized your education! Do you realize what this will look like to colleges?!”
For some reason, you giggled a little bit, and the giggle turned into a laughing fit. Tony quickly joined you, laughing so hard tears were coming out of both of your eyes.
“I can’t even pretend it’s not funny anymore,” he wheezed, bending over and dramatically falling to the floor.
“You know what makes it even funnier?” you giggled, looking your dad in the eyes. “That wasn’t even the only one!” you shrieked, putting your head between your knees as you cackled.
This only caused you both to laugh harder, clutching your stomachs like your lives depended on it. It took about five minutes for you both to sober up from the laughing ordeal, and an extra 5 for Tony to put his serious dad face back on.
“I have to admit it was a really good prank,” he smiled at you. “Even though it was fuckin’ hilarious, you’re still in hot water. I’m going to let you go without punishment this time, little miss, but if it happens again there will be actual consequences. Okay, sweetheart?”
You nodded your head in agreement, already bounding up the stairs to tell Pepper what happened.
“TONY!” She yelled downstairs, and he braced himself for the unavoidable lecture. In his opinion, though, it was worth it.
Tumblr media
The team was in the main living room, gathered around a few files dealing with some “official business.” Amidst the normal files, there was one that stood out. It was titled “The School Incident.”
Even though they knew they shouldn’t be snooping, their curiosity outweighed their morals, and they clicked on the file.
In it was security footage from your school, detailing the exact moment the prank was pulled. Everyone sat around the table in shock, silence filling the room as they processed what they’d just seen. Apparently, you’d decided that this was the exact moment to walk in, and the Avengers all stared at you when you made your entrance. Dropping your backpack at the door heavily, you flopped down on the couch exasperatedly.
“Y’all. I had such a weird day, this guy named- Why is everyone looking like they just saw a ghost?” you asked, confusion spelled out on your face. Your eyes focused next on what the team had pulled up on the screen, and realization flashed in your eyes as you jumped up and ran out of the room. You didn’t even bother trying to explain. The Avengers burst out into laughter as they followed you out of the room, the ruckus so loud it Peter could probably hear it in Queens. You had no choice but to run, and run you did.

33... and you... and me
It's day 2 of @taznovembercelebration and today's prompt was "promise". I drew a second card and got "celebrity AU" so here's a mix of those. It's extra silly because what is taznc for if not to roll around in the ridiculousness?
You can find yesterday's here, and read this one below or on Ao3.
--
"I can't just slide into his dms and propose, you're being ridiculous." Kravitz flops back on the sofa, head in Sloane's lap. "Why'd he have to go and get famous and unobtainable?"
"Ah yes, it would be ridiculous, wouldn't it, for someone to get all famous without warning. Perhaps be some big shot that everyone wants as musical director."
Kravitz harrumphs. "I'm a big name to a very small group of people. It's not the same and you know it. Taako's on TV! Television!! He has live events! He signs things!! He has calendars, every year!!"
"You could have calendars every year if you just listened to my suggestio..."
"Sloane! I am not doing suggestive poses in my pants holding a baton. We've had this conversation an upsetting amount of times."
"Look Krav, I'm gay as hell, but I know excellent marketing when I think of it."
"Uh huh."
"But mostly, I know an excellent distraction when I think of one."
Kravitz is tumbling to the ground before he can do anything to counteract Sloane's shove. She's into the bathroom and has the door locked before he's back on his feet. Maybe he does need to take up yoga or something to help him fall and un-fall more gracefully.
"What’s going on?" Kravitz shouts through the door.
"I'm going through a tunnel, I can't hear you!" Sloane yells back.
"If you're ill you could have just said, do you need me to get you anything?"
"You can't be nice to me right now." Sloane has just enough guilt in her tone to indicate that this was, in fact, not a medical emergency.
"Sloane? What did you do?"
"What am I doING?" Sloane corrects.
"Sloane?" Kravitz tries not to let worry creep into his voice, he fails. Wait... No. No no no! Kravitz pats at his right pocket desperately, then the left just in case he stashed his phone there instead. Nothing. "Tell me you didn't?"
"What's that? Bad line, I can't hear you."
"Sloane!" The panic is there now, evident, front and centre, 100% justified.
There's no reply. Shit. Kravitz runs for his laptop, maybe if he just changes his password...
"I already changed it." Sloane hollers from the bedroom.
Kravitz changes tactic, tries for his emails.
"Sorry Krav, I changed that too."
"You don't even know what I'm doing."
"You're on your emails, you're predicable."
"Actually, I'm calling the police." Kravitz yells, petulant and stupid.
He can hear Sloane snorting with laughter from down the hall. She's never going to let him forget that one. Shit.
--
"How bad was the message you sent?"
“The message I sent? Oh, we’re not going to be talking about any messages from me today.”
“What do you mean?”
"Well, while rhapsodising about how much you want to marry Taako, how wonderful you think Taako is, how unobtainable and perfect and wonderful, you forgot to mention that you've stayed in touch. You also forgot to mention that he follows you. You forgot to mention, Kravitz, that you and Taako have been chatting."
"It's not chatting, it's just talking sometimes."
"Uh huh." Sloane narrows her eyes.
"He doesn't know who I am or anything. He probably doesn't even remember me."
Sloane clears her throat and reads off her screen. ""Nice to see that Taako's future husband is keeping it tight." Reply to a photo you sent him in which you're conducting. He does seem to have circled your arse in the screen shot he sent back."
"That's not serious. He's joking."
"And the countdown?"
"What?" Surely she didn't go through the whole conversation? There’s loads of it. So what if Taako messages him sometimes, so they video called semi-occasionally? It didn't mean anything, he'd never specifically said it meant anything.
"And I quote." Kravitz didn't like the sound of that. "Happy birthday, wandsome, 4 years 'til you're mine."
"That's... It… It doesn’t…"
"3 years 'til we can buy the cottage and run away together, handsome. Temporarily, obvi, Taako needs to stay current."
"How many screenshots do you have?" Kravitz might be able to anticipate exactly how bad this is if he knows. Maybe she searched for keywords and didn’t scroll.
"Your birthday last year: "1 year, we're nearly there, don't go falling in love with anyone else.""
"Okay, I get it. He talks to me and he remembers my birthday."
"Kravitz, you are, as ever, focusing on the wrong headline here. He remembers the promise, you know, the one you've been agonising over? Positively fretting about, in fact. "Should I remind him? Should I see if he's interested?" The answer's yes, Krav, you should see if the man who has reminded you about the ridiculous fucking promise for the last 3 years is interested in following through."
"But his boyfriend?"
"Hold on, wait, what boyfriend? Have you been messaging him even though he's with someone else?? Kravitz!"
"He's never mentioned him to me. Just, there's been a few interviews..." He tails off.
Sloane taps at her phone.
"Are you googling Taako?"
"No, I'm googling "boyfriend "Taako Tacco"" because I actually want relevant results."
Kravitz sighs and takes his place at Sloane's shoulder. Their height difference was nothing if not perfect for group research.
"My boyfriend doesn't like to be in the spotlight, we'll, apart from when he's doing it for work, he's a baller music guy, only the best for Taako, natch."
Sloane turned slowly to glance at Kravitz.
"I don't know who it is." He shrugs. "Taako didn't mention him to me, so I thought maybe it was to keep them off his back, or, you know, some kind of stunt."
"Mmm hmm. Well here's one from earlier this year, see if you can think of anyone it might be. Taako says: "I think it's pretty serious. We talked about marriage a long time ago and we check in every year. Mind you, who wouldn't want to be married to America's favourite kitchen wizard?""
"He's not wrong. Anyone would jump at the chance." Maybe his voice isn't meant to sound so dreamy, but it's Taako. He's everything Kravitz wants from a partner, funny, attentive, generous, smart, gorgeous.
Sloane all but groans. "Gross." She grimaces up at Kravitz. "Being disgusting isn't getting you out of this though, next one: "yeah, I'm sure he's the one. I've known him forever and haven't been interested in anyone else." Oh, and here’s some more, interesting: "he comes to my shows occasionally, I love it when he's in the audience, always inspires a bit of extra magic, gotta make sure he remembers how great Taako is." Haven't you been to a few of his shows, Kravitz?"
"Well obviously, I go whenever I can." He does, it's important to support your friend who you may also be in love with. It’s also really nice when Taako comps his ticket, although they agreed to do one on one off so Kravitz can support the show too.
"And you let him know you're going?"
"Well it usually comes up when we're chatting, or, you know, planning when to meet up?"
"Oh, so you've been meeting up?"
"Yeah, of course.” Kravitz hesitates. “...Only when he's in town and, you know, the times I flew out to meet him."
"Uh huh." Sloane's doing the voice she usually adopts when Kravitz is being particularly dim about something.
"It's nice, you know, to keep in touch."
"Would you say you keep in touch a normal amount, based on your other acquaintances?" There's a trap here, Kravitz can tell, but he doesn't know what it is.
"Well I talk to him less than you, and you're basically my only other friend."
"Oh don't make it sad when I'm trying to bully you."
"Sorry." Kravitz says, resting his chin on her shoulder, that might garner enough sympathy to get him out of this.
"So how often would you say you kiss, you know, when you're seeing each other a normal amount?"
Or maybe it wouldn’t get him of out this. Kravitz tries hard not to freeze up and demonstrate the level of panic flowing through him. "Ah… well, you know... The, er, the usual amount." He says, casually. Definitely casually. She won't suspect anything.
"Which issssss?"
Shit. Well, honest is the best policy. “Every time. Obviously. Kiss your homies."
"We're homies, we don't kiss."
"Would you, er... Like to?" Kravitz's throat is dry, clicking as he tries to get the words out. He really doesn’t want to have to kiss Sloane.
Sloane lurches away from him. “No! Gross. God.”
“Alright, there’s no need to be so totally disgusted about it.” He doesn’t need to be defensive about this, he doesn’t want to be defensive about this! He had one misguided attempt at kissing girls and realised very quickly that he had no interest in it, but, pride is a fickle thing, and Kravitz clearly needs to work on his.
“Are you actually upset that I, a gay woman, don’t want to kiss you, a gay man, who has absolutely no interest in me and knows that I don’t want any kind of romantic relationship with him? Also, what exactly do you think Hurley’s going to say when I tell her about this?”
“No! But…”
“Kravitz, you are very handsome, I will not stroke your ego any more than that. Back on track - you’ve been kissing Taako on the reg for at least 3 years now?”
Kravitz cringes.
“Kravitz!”
If he doesn’t reply he can’t be in trouble. That’s science.
“Kravitz AdventureZone! How long?”
“Six years.” He mumbles as quietly as he dares.
“One more time there, friend?”
“Six years.” He says more clearly, he’s not going to repeat it again.
“Six fucking years? I thought you were going out of town for work stuff!”
“I was sometimes! You didn’t ask every time.”
“I…” Sloane gives an exasperated sigh.
“Please tell me you know who his boyfriend is.”
“I just told you, Taako’s never mentioned him, I don’t know if he exists.”
“Kravitz. Engage your brain. Think about this. You have been seeing this man regularly kissing and I assume more…”
“I read about brojobs one time and just kind of assumed it was an extension of tha…”
“No, stop talking right now immediately. I refuse to hear you say anything else about boning down. You have never seen a penis before, even your own.” Sloane clamps a hand across his mouth. “Now, you’ve been seeing him regularly, kissing, more.” Sloane presses her hand down more firmly, just in case he tries to add anything else. “... and you work in music.” She removes her hand.
“I work in music.” Kravitz says quietly.
“You sure do.”
“And we message nearly every day, and video call a few times a week.”
“Uh huh.”
“And he sends me nice things and I send him nice things.”
“Yep.”
“And we joke about the promise every year.”
“Do you think maybe it’s not a joke?”
“He could have anyone!”
“I’m not convinced he wants anyone else, Krav.”
“I… I’m dating Taako?”
“Sure are, bud.”
“I. Fuck.” Kravitz sits down on the floor. “He never said.” He says, more to his feet than to Sloane. His Mums always taught him to put his head between his bent knees when he felt floaty so he could be small and heavy instead.
“Apart from all the times you talked about getting married?”
“He didn’t specify he wasn’t joking.”
“Did he specify that he was?”
“No.” Kravitz says, sulkily.
“And how about all the times you talked about moving in together?”
“We moved in together!” There, he’s being reasonable! Flawless logic.
“Yeah, but you’re not in love with me are you?”
“No.” Says Kravitz reluctant to admit defeat... Although, actually, wait. “But he doesn’t know that!”
“That you’re not in love with me?”
“No! That I’m in love with him.”
“So you haven’t told him you love him?”
“Well, I mean, I obviously tell him I love him.”
“Uh huh.” Sloane sounds like she’s about to implode.
“But like, in the normal way.”
“Uh huh.” He’s not sure he’s ever heard her voice pitched so high. “When you say normal?”
“Just like, the usual amount, that I would tell a friend who I’m in love with and also sleeping with and seeing regularly and… fuck.”
“Yes, you already established the fucking, there’s no need to boast.”
Kravitz should laugh, it’s funny, is the thing, it really is, but right now he’s rehashing 6 years worth of memories. It seems obvious, now that Sloane has laid it out for him, but how was he supposed to know? If no one clarifies then why’s he suddenly supposed to assume they’re dating and not just friends? At what point does that even happen? It’s been wonderful, is the thing, he loves that man, deeply, truly, passionately. That was the reason he’d brought up the promise in the first place. When they both hit 33, if there was no one else they wanted to marry, they’d marry each other. It had been the perfect plan when they were 10, and 15, and 20. But Taako had gone off and been famous and they saw each other less and Kravitz had just assumed that now that the world loved Taako too Taako would love someone else.
But he didn’t.
He hadn’t for the past who knows how many years, he definitely hadn’t for the last 6, because he’d picked Kravitz, chosen him to pour his time and his love into and Kravitz hadn’t even noticed properly. Or, of course he’d noticed that it was an important relationship. He’d celebrated Taako’s achievements, birthdays, candlenights; he’d bought every single one of his calendars and made him autograph them; he even made the world’s first and only copy of ‘“Got Wood?” a conductor pin up calendar’ for Taako. But no one had explicitly said they were dating. Taako hadn’t acknowledged it, well, except in the interviews… shit.
Kravitz stood up too fast, grabbed the table to steady himself. “I need to buy a ring.”
“Right now?”
“Right now! It’s nearly my birthday.”
“The promise?”
“Yes. I intend to keep it.”

SHE STILL FINISHED grading the first round of essays for Thomas, but she dropped them off at the faculty mailboxes that Sunday afternoon — she couldn't face him at that point. On Monday, she gravitated back to her seat at the rear of his lecture hall. She did the same on Wednesday.
Her responses to his emails and his texts were short and to-the-point. He needed her to grade the recent papers from his International Security class? Sure, but she was busy during his office hours; any chance he could leave them in his mailbox so she could pick them up the next morning? Thanks, that'd be great. He wanted her to work with him on laying out the rubric for an essay? No problem. She'd set up a shared Google Doc right away.
It was a week after Y/N had last spoken to Thomas that Dolley was over his apartment that weekend with James. She was smug when she came home to Y/N.
"Thomas is looking for you," she said mildly, and Y/N glanced up from her laptop on the couch with a skeptical gaze.
"And what, exactly, makes you say that?"
"He asked me to tell you."
Y/N's eyebrows shot up. "Wait, seriously?"
"Mhm." Dolley's smile was self-pleased. "He was home when I was over, and he said he needed to talk to you."
"Thanks for letting me know." Y/N's voice was tense as she looked back to the paper she was writing, and Dolley took a seat beside her with a glass of water.
"Can I ask why that might be?"
"No clue."
"So are you going to talk to him?"
"I have class with him Monday. I'll see him then."
"Y/N." She gave her a deadpanned look, and Y/N looked tired when she met her eyes. "Did something happen? You haven't mentioned his name even once all this week."
"No, everything's fine," Y/N assured her, but Dolley looked less than convinced.
"Then why do you look so unhappy right now, dear?"
"What? I don't," she replied defensively, and Dolley raised a skeptical eyebrow.
"How daft do you think I am?" she asked, folding her arms after she put her glass on their coffee table. "You can deny wanting to sleep with him all you'd like, but I know how much you like Thomas. It isn't exactly subtle. So what happened with you two?"
Y/N sighed, rubbing the side of her nose. "It's not really that big of a deal. I'm probably blowing it out of proportion, but he drove me home from the party at their apartment last weekend, and..."
"And?"
"And I came onto him." She was wincing at even the memory. "I was drunk, though, and he knew that, but it was so stupid. I'm still kind of mortified, so I've been dodging his attempts to talk to me. I don't know how I'm supposed to face him."
Dolley took a deep breath, eyeing Y/N where she sat with her head in her hands, her laptop closed on her lap. "Well, he clearly wants you to talk to him, so I'm sure he didn't think it was quite so bad."
"But I'm gonna be an anxious wreck the next time I have to talk to him," she groaned.
"You're his TA and his student," Dolley pointed out. "You can't avoid him forever."
"I'm not trying to," Y/N said. "But… y'know. I can still put it off for a little while. Midterms are only a week away, and then it's spring break. If I can make it that far, I don't have to talk to him until fourth quarter."
"You're being ridiculous."
“I’m being practical,” she replied, “besides, it’s only two weeks till break. The only time I’m gonna need to talk to him is when I turn in my midterm.”
Dolley snorted. “I’d wish you luck, but this one’s a lost cause, dear.”
————————————
IN THE END, Dolley was right. He hardly let her get away with it for more than a week.
"Y/N, can I have a word?"
She cringed.
It was 6 PM on Wednesday; the rest of her class was filing out of the lecture hall, but she paused where she stood in the row second to last. She'd already turned to leave. She shifted on her feet as she turned to Thomas, pulled her bag further up her shoulder, but when she saw him standing at the front of the room, arms folded and brow creased as he watched her, she couldn't meet his eyes.
Her classmates shot her curious looks as they left — Thomas never asked students to stay after class. If something was wrong, he sent them emails, he asked them to come to his office hours, he’d even used Twitter messages to reach people before, but he never publicly asked someone to hang back. She’d learned that it was against his ethos as a professor; he’d told her a story or two of his college days that made her understand why.
However, as much attention as this anomaly in his behavior drew, she had a feeling she knew why he wanted a word with her. She slumped back into her chair beside the aisle until everyone else was gone, and finally, the door fell shut, echoed through the hall, and she approached Thomas's desk with a looming sense of dread. He glanced up from packing his bag.
"Hey."
"Hey." Her voice was hesitant. "You couldn't have just approached me after the class got out?"
"In my defense," he started, "you haven't been makin' yourself all that easy to find. Everything okay lately?"
He was watching her expectantly, an eyebrow raised, and she folded her arms. "Yeah. Just fine."
"Then lemme rephrase that." Then, he turned fully toward her, his bag pulled shut and pushed aside. He frowned. "Why've you been avoiding me?"
Her eyebrows shot up. "What? I'm not."
"Yes, you are." The words left no room for negotiation, and she sighed. "And I mean, 's your prerogative. You've still been comin' through as a TA, so I'm not about to try and criticize you, but can I at least get an explanation?"
He looked pretty frustrated for someone who wasn't about to try and criticize her.
"You're not that oblivious," she said. "I have a feeling you know why."
Several moments passed in a tense silence. He was eyeing her tentatively, unmoving, and she couldn't meet his scrutinizing gaze, shifting on her feet. Finally, he sighed.
"The party?"
"Got it in one."
To her surprise, he let out a dry huff of laughter. "To be honest, I'm surprised you even remember that."
"I kinda wish I didn't."
Thomas offered her a reluctant smile. "I hear that. But..." He hesitated. "Which part of that night’s still bothering you?”
Y/N furrowed her brow, looking back up toward him. "Seriously?”
She figured it was obvious. Trying to seduce your professor while well-past drunk seemed like a clear, egregious issue, and she wasn’t quite sure why he was playing dumb.
"After all that time you spent avoidin’ me, you've gotta know what I'm talkin' about. C'mon." She stared at him blankly for another moment, and finally, he sighed. "Nevermind. I'm sorry about what happened then. We don't have to keep discussin' it if you don't wanna."
"No, hang on, what are you sorry for?" she asked, disbelief clear in her voice, and he raised an eyebrow. She hesitated before she went on, "I... I'm sorry for coming onto you like that. It was really stupid, and I know I crossed a line, but that's all my own fault; I don't—"
"You were drunk. Don't feel bad about it," he said reasonably. She was searching his apologetic expression as he spoke; she couldn't fathom why he looked guilty. Had something happened that she didn't remember?
"But why are you apologizing?" she asked softly, creasing her forehead. "You didn't do anything wrong."
"I got real close to doin' something I shouldn't, though," he said, carding a hand through his curls. "I shouldn't have let it get that far. 'Specially not when you were drunk. I got too close to crossing that line."
"Too close to..." Y/N repeated, trailing off with her brow furrowed, but that was when it hit her. Had she not been so mortified by her own actions, she realized, she'd have been dwelling instead on the way his hands had tightened around her waist, how he'd pulled her into himself with a bruising grip when she tugged at his hair. That evening, she'd convinced herself he was going to spend the night. "Oh."
"Yeah." He swallowed hard, hands tucked into his pockets. "So, 'm sorry. I should've shut that down, and I get why you've been keepin' your distance."
"No, no, relax." She dismissed his apology with a flippant wave of her hand. "I was in the wrong. You were trying to be considerate."
"You're givin' me too much credit," he sighed, and a flicker of a smile graced her lips.
"I wouldn't say that," she argued, and she hesitated, cocked a brow before adding, "Unless, of course, you had an ulterior motive for insisting on taking me home in the middle of the night?"
His eyes widened. "Oh! Jesus, no, I swear, I didn't— I wouldn't..." As an amused grin split Y/N's controlled expression, though, he trailed off, squinting at her. "You're just messin' with me, aren't you?"
“Maybe,” she answered mildly, giving an innocent shrug. He scowled. “But, really, Thomas, it’s fine. We can forget it ever happened, okay?”
He watched her warily as she offered him a tense smile. He wasn't sure it was fine, and quite frankly, he knew he'd have a hard time forgetting it ever happened — he felt like there was more left to say.
But as his pause stretched on, as she raised her eyebrows at his uncharacteristic silence, he didn't have the words.
"You sure?" was all he finally said.
"Yeah."
“Alright. He eyed her for another moment, wary, before he pulled his bag up onto his shoulder. "That’s good. I… guess I'll see you around. Good luck with midterms, Y/N."
She didn't miss the final, unreadable once-over he gave her before starting up the stairs out of the lecture hall. She didn't go after him.
————————————————
WHAT FOLLOWED WAS midterms week, which came and went without much pomp or circumstance. She didn't see much of Thomas that week after finishing with his test, which was more intentional than she’d like to have admitted. On Friday night, she finished grading the papers he'd delegated to her, but she just left them in his mailbox.
When Saturday afternoon rolled around, she was perched on the couch in her apartment flipping through the same Netflix suggestions she'd been seeing for the past hour. She'd had an incredibly relaxed day, and she assumed it would stay as such until Dolley came bursting in with a wide grin.
Y/N raised an eyebrow. "Where are you coming from looking so excited?"
"James's."
"Ah." No further questions were necessary, but when Dolley circled around to stand right between Y/N and the television, it was clear something more was up — something Y/N had no interest in finding out about. "Do you mind? I was watching that."
"Oh, please. No, you weren't," Dolley scoffed, but her eyes were alight despite her contrived annoyance.
"Well, I was going to," Y/N grumbled, and Dolley could only smile.
"You're going to want to hear what I have to say."
"Am I?"
"Certainly." Y/N raised an expectant brow when Dolley took a step closer to her. "Spring break just started."
"What else is new?"
"James's family has a home in the Outer Banks."
"Good for him." Y/N's responses were short as she tried to lean around Dolley, scrolling through the 'New to Netflix' category. Dolley groaned, rolled her eyes. Y/N's noises of protest went entirely ignored as Dolley pulled her remote from her hand, and she deadpanned as Dolley rested her hands on her shoulders, sitting down to straddle her lap on the couch. "Seriously?" Y/N whined.
"And we are going to the Outer Banks for spring break."
"I'm sorry, what?" She let out a dry laugh at the conviction in Dolley's voice. "Alright, maybe you're going to the Outer Banks over break, but last I checked, James and I aren't exactly on the level of road trip buddies."
"Please consider it. He told me I could invite you."
Y/N rolled her eyes. "Yeah, because he likes you. Not because he wants me there."
"Oh, what does it matter?" she whined. "An invitation is an invitation. James just doesn't know you yet. I'm sure he'll come to love you."
"I don't care," Y/N groaned, shoving her off, and Dolley rolled off to sit beside her on the couch with a huff. "As much as I love you, I refuse to let your infatuation with James take over my social life."
"What social life?" Dolley scoffed. "I've already taken it over. Now I'm just adding James."
"Hey, I have other friends," Y/N said, but Dolley gave her a disbelieving look.
"Your professors and your study groups don't count."
"There's also the kid I see every day in the library," Y/N defended. "He's the only other one on the sixth floor."
"Do you even know his name?"
She hesitated. "That's not relevant."
"Darling," Dolley groaned, shifting onto her side to face Y/N. "Just come with me. It'll be fun. And I'm sure James is bringing Thomas; after all, they're roommates."
"That doesn't add to the appeal, Doll." Y/N wasn’t sure she trusted herself on a vacation spent with him in the Outer Banks, sleeping in the same house as him, trying not to stare at him shirtless on the beach. "I let you drag me to their apartment for a night, and it ended up sucking. I'm not gonna subject myself to that for a whole week."
"Ten days," Dolley corrected her.
"That's worse." Y/N’s huff was heavy, and as she raked a hand through her hair, Dolley wore a pout. “Besides, I can’t. I have that scholarship dinner thing, remember? I have to wine and dine all the donors.”
Dolley wrinkled her nose. “I forgot about those. I’ve always thought they were exploitative.”
“Oh, they are,” Y/N agreed, “but they’re giving me too much money for me to be able to complain. I can be their little academic Miss America for a night as long as they keep paying my tuition.”
Dolley hummed in acquiescence as Y/N returned to scrolling through her suggested shows on Netflix. “So it’s like a beauty pageant, but instead of hair extensions, you bring your resume.”
“Feels more like a strip club. I had to go to two at my old school, and it’s just putting on a show to get rich, wrinkled old men to throw us a few bucks. May as well wear a g-string and try to find myself a sugar daddy.”
“Mmh, let me know if any of your DILFs have pretty sons, alright?”
Y/N gave Dolley a skeptical look. “You’ve already got James; leave the rich legacy boys for me.”
“Sharing is caring.”
———————————————
ULTIMATELY, DOLLEY WENT to the Outer Banks without her. She left the next morning (but apparently couldn't leave without giving Y/N a serious tongue-lashing). And from there, Y/N was left to fend for herself.
The first couple days were fine. She ate the remainder of the groceries in the apartment. She watched seven seasons of Grey's Anatomy before deciding she hated all the characters. She cleaned out the fridge. She drank Dolley's nice red wine (with no plans to replace it). She organized her sock drawer.
Alright, so maybe she was going a little stir-crazy in Dolley's absence. So much for her having a social life outside of that apartment.
However, she didn't leave until she was clean out of food, bourbon, and episodes of SVU.
She was just around the corner from the nice CVS, though, so when she left, she didn't particularly expect to have any reason to look her best — if any of her classmates saw her in her pajama pants, it was far from her greatest concern.
She emerged with two white plastic bags, both stretching around the edges of the fruits of her pseudo-grocery run; the fact that she hadn't bought anything with nearly the nutritional value of actual fruit was beside the point. Regardless, she was feeling rather self-satisfied as she turned onto the sidewalk headed back to her apartment, arms weighed down with junk food, holding her CVS rewards card in the corner of her mouth, lips pressed into a thin line as she tried to re-organize her wallet — but apparently, she was too preoccupied to realize what was immediately in front of her as she took the next left.
"Woah, there."
She screeched as she ran directly into the man on the other side of the corner. As she stumbled backward, not managing to spare herself from falling on her ass, two of her grocery bags went tumbling to the ground; three split right through the bottom of the plastic, and as her pint of mint chocolate chip ice cream rolled to the feet of her accidental assailant, she let out a defeated groan.
She dropped her shoulders with an angry huff, and when the man before her leaned down to pick up the ice cream she'd spent the past week working up the energy to leave the house for, her gaze followed it up as he rose.
"Mint chip? Really?" When she caught sight of Thomas's amused expression, the exhaustion on her shoulders only compounded. He'd clearly been out running; he ran a hand through his curls, wiped the sweat from his brow as he popped out one of his earbuds. "You've got some awful taste, there."
"Of course, it's you," she grumbled. "Because I couldn't have been bulldozed by some stranger to, at least, spare myself the humiliation."
His smile was entertained as she dusted herself off, sparing what she could of her CVS haul, tucking her rewards card into her wallet and her pack of razor heads into her purse before she stood. "I think this belongs to you?"
"Yeah, yeah." The annoyance was clear in her voice when she looked up to see his outstretched hand, offering her back the ice cream, but (although she took the pint back immediately, as her priorities were still in order) that wasn't where her gaze stopped, instead trailing up his arm to his heaving (bare) chest and the earbuds hanging loosely from one of his ears. Her breath caught in her throat.
Sweat trailed down his torso to his abs, glistening in the mid-morning sunlight and drawing her eyes down to the waist of his sweatpants where they hung low on his hips. Her stare was only broken when he pulled his headphones out, wrapping them around his hand and yanking her gaze back up to his arms. The shift didn't help; instead, she couldn't break her wide-eyed, gawking stare from his biceps.
"Y/N?"
She was jolted back to earth with a start at the sound of his voice as he stuffed his earbuds into his pocket. His grin was broad, and her cheeks were on fire. "Shit, sorry, I, um—"
"Relax, it's fine," he said, tucking his phone in his pocket. "Need a hand with your, uh..." He picked up her extra-large jar of Nutella, "groceries?"
As he watched her expectantly, she swallowed hard, shaking her head with a tense smile. "No, no, that's fine," she assured him. "I wouldn't want to interrupt your run. I can manage."
He quirked a brow. "You sure? You're gonna have a hell of a time carryin' all of these on your own."
"I don't live far."
"I know," he said, and as she did her best to collect all her goods from the pavement around them, he did the same, "but there's no way you can get these all back by hand."
"I'll be alright," she said, her words taking on an undertone of annoyance (although it was ultimately born of her unease). Thomas didn't look so convinced.
"C'mon, just lemme help you out?" he reasoned with her, and as she tried to pull her purse shut around her two bags of mini tacos, balancing a package of laundry detergent pods on her lifted knee, she couldn't put up too much resistance. "You 'n I both know you need it."
Y/N pursed her lips. "Fine. Thank you."
Thomas raised an eyebrow. "Call me crazy, but you don't sound too grateful, now."
"Let's just go."
Though it took them a moment longer, between them, they did manage to balance all of her quasi-groceries in their arms, and Y/N nodded in the direction Thomas had been coming from. "My apartment is back this way."
"Yeah, I remember."
"Still?"
He shrugged. "I'm good with directions. And I've taken you back there twice, now."
"Right.” Against her will, the memories from those two separate nights began to surface in her mind, and she could feel her cheeks heating up. “How could I forget?”
Her tone was dry, uncomfortable, but to her relief, Thomas laughed it off.
"Someone's feelin' hostile today, huh?" he commented. Although she rolled her eyes, her face was burning; his presence had her on edge, reacting to even the smallest of his movements, and she was still trying to shake off how mortified she was from having run into him in the first place.
"Sorry. I'm just tired." He raised an eyebrow. "My sleep schedule's been all over the place without Dolley around to nag me about it."
"Oh, yeah, she's outta town with James, huh?" She hummed in confirmation. “Why didn’t you end up goin’ with ‘em? James told me he invited you.”
She huffed out a dry laugh. “Yeah, he invited me as an extension of Dolley because he wanted her there. I’m much happier alone in my apartment than stuck in the Outer Banks with people I hardly know.”
“Yeah, you ‘n me both.”
Y/N furrowed her brow. “I thought these were your friends that were going.”
He shrugged. “James ended up bringin’ a lotta grad students I’ve never met. Some undergrads in there, too. Would’ve been a shitty ten days, ‘specially once he let me know you weren’t comin’.”
“‘Especially once you knew I wasn’t coming’?” she echoed, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah, don’t get ahead of yourself,” he replied. “I stayed behind ‘cause I knew I could pawn more papers off on you to grade.”
“Well, that is part of my charm,” she said frankly, and he couldn’t help but laugh.
“That and the pajamas you’re always wearin’ around campus?”
“Oh, come on, I’ve seen you when I was wearing pajamas once. That’s it.”
He hummed skeptically, and she glanced up at him as they walked. “I know you’re no math major, but addin’ today to the day you stormed into my office makes two days, not one.”
“Today doesn’t count,” she argued. “The plan was to go to CVS, go back home, and interact with nobody. Besides, you’re not even wearing a shirt, so it’s not like you have any room to judge.”
“At least you know that I own shirts, though.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“That you only own pajamas, sweetheart. Didn’t think I had to spell it out for you,” he said matter-of-factly, casting her a sidelong glance, and while his expression was playful, she could feel her cheeks flush.
“Oh, shut up; you know that isn’t true,” she defended. “Just because I’m partial to my sweatpants doesn’t mean I can’t dress up when need be. I have nice clothes.”
He eyed her skeptically. “I’ll believe it when I see it.”
————————————
IT TOOK THE pair of them just a few minutes to reach Y/N’s apartment building, but it took several more for them to actually make it up to her apartment. Trying to get the door unlocked without dropping anything was a fiasco — it ended in one of her mini Coke cans rolling down the hall, no doubt fated to explode the minute she opened it, and a bag of pizza rolls splitting open at the corner when she dropped it. Thomas had little sympathy for her complaints about them being exposed to carpet germs.
"Thank you for all the help." Y/N turned to Thomas with a sheepish smile when she finally put her groceries down. "Sorry for ruining your workout."
"Don't mention it." He dismissed her apology with a wave of his hand after he put the rest of her things down into the pile she'd started. "After all, you're tiring enough that it doesn't make a difference."
"Shut up." Despite her scowl, he snickered, and she rolled her eyes as she went to open her fridge. "I should put everything away so it doesn't go bad, but is there anything I can get you as a 'thank you'? A drink? Something to eat?"
"This just your way of askin' me to stay longer?" He raised a teasing eyebrow, but when she turned to him, her eyes were wide.
“Oh! No, no, I didn’t mean… I mean, you don’t have to, I just—”
“Woah, relax.” His voice held a trace of a laugh at the panic that was slowly dissipating from her gaze. “I was kiddin’, alright? Didn’t mean to rattle you like that.”
“I’m not rattled,” she defended, closing her fridge, and she could feel her cheeks heating up as he eyed her with disbelief. “I just felt like I owed you something for all the help. I know I kinda derailed your day."
"I told you, it wasn't a problem," he said mildly. “But, y’know, if you wanna pay me back, I’ve got a whole lot more papers that need gradin’.”
Her groan made him laugh. “God, please don’t make me regret becoming your TA. I have better things to do with my spring break.”
“Like what?”
“Like eating all the ice cream I just bought?” she said, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world, and he rolled his eyes.
“C’mon, if I give you the rubric, you really can’t multitask?”
She sighed. “Yeah, alright, if you really need the help. I’ll come to pick them up sometime this week if that works for you?”
“That’s just fine. I wasn’t plannin’ on going into my office, though, so you’ll have to swing by my apartment.” Her most vivid memories of the last time she’d been at his place flashed in her mind’s eye. “That okay?”
“Yeah. Yeah, of course.” She cleared her throat when she realized how long her moment of hesitation had been. He creased his brow. “Just tell me what time you’ll be home. I won’t have any scheduling conflicts.”
“What, you don’t have any big parties on the calendar?” he asked, cracking a lopsided grin, and she let out the lightest of laughs, the sound quiet and forced. “You aren’t gonna find yourself gettin’ arrested when a professor calls the cops on your rager?”
“Nah, not this time,” she said. Her smile was stiff, and he pursed his lips as he watched her continue unpacking her groceries, bending down to tuck various packages into different cupboards.
“Good to know,” he replied. In the pause that followed, Y/N was aware of every twitch of every muscle in her body; she could feel his eyes on her as she moved through her space. “I’ll text you when I sort ‘em out, then.”
“Cool.” Her mouth was dry. She didn’t look his way.
“Alright.” The hum of the fridge had never sounded louder. They could hear footsteps on an adjacent floor of the building and the soft buzz of their AC unit. Y/N swallowed. His next words were cautious. “So, should I, uh, head on out, then?”
Her eyebrows jumped. When she turned her head to look at him, she realized he hadn’t moved from his spot. She shrugged hesitantly.
“I mean, it’s your call.” His gaze flitted away from her when she met his eyes. “If you have somewhere to be, I don’t wanna keep you. I can finish putting my food away.”
“Wouldn't wanna overstay my welcome is all. I dunno if I should be spendin’ any more time in your apartment than I need to.” His expression was nonchalant, uncaring, but his shoulders were tense. She could see the tendons in his upper arms twitching, and it was only then that she was reminded that he was, in fact, very shirtless in her kitchen.
He glanced back at her with tentative eyes.
“That might be smart.” She stood up to her full height, looking down at the counter before her. “It’s getting kinda late anyway. You should probably head back before it gets dark.”
It was nowhere near sundown, but the message was certainly received, and Thomas nodded. “‘Course. I’ll see myself out.”
“Thanks for the help with the groceries,” Y/N said softly, and he smiled.
“Anytime,” he said. “I’ll see you soon.”
———————————————
“WHAT CLASS GOT a multiple choice midterm?” The indignance in Y/N’s voice made Thomas laugh.
“The freshmen.”
They were at Thomas’s apartment. Dolley and James would still be gone on their road trip for five more days, though, and that left them living alone about a block away from each other. Y/N wasn’t sure she knew where they stood, but when she went to pick up the midterms Thomas needed her to grade, he first had to walk her through the rubric. Then she started asking questions, and they both ended up sitting; then Thomas returned to sipping his coffee, and Y/N started leafing through one of the papers with a pen, and it only made sense for her to stay.
At least, that was how she justified it to herself as she reached the end of her second hour parked on his couch.
“I swear to god, you coddle those freshmen,” she said, twirling her pen absentmindedly as she went through the answer key. She scowled. “And they’re still getting, like, 25% off.”
“See? I’ve gotta coddle ‘em,” he defended. “If I make that class any harder, I’m gonna have a full class of Fs on my record. Won’t be gettin’ tenure, that’s for sure.”
“If you treated them like they were competent, maybe they’d be forced to learn,” she suggested, and he rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever. When you finish grading ‘em, d’you mind calculating the curve for me?”
“This is curved?” Her tone bordered on genuine annoyance, but her dramatic reaction was only entertaining Thomas. “I’m gonna need another cup of coffee to get through this.”
“Now, this feels exploitive.”
“You don’t even pay me to TA,” she pointed out. “With the bullshit I put up with, you owe me a drink from that fancy espresso machine you have tucked away.”
“Aw, c’mon, is workin’ with me really so bad, sweetheart?” He plastered on a pout, but the casual term of endearment made her pulse jump. It didn’t feel so natural to hear him call her that anymore.
"Don't get me started," she said, but she knew how shaky she sounded. Thankfully, he didn't seem to notice (and if he did, he didn't mention it).
“Alright, alright. I was just headed to get myself another, anyway.” He acquiesced easily, and she was all but relieved when he left the room, taking both their mugs with him.
She wanted there to be a way for her to shake off any of the nerves he always seemed to leave her with. It wasn’t right; it wasn’t fair — he was her professor. He used terms of endearment without a second thought. She needed to stop overthinking it, especially given that she’d heard him call both Maria and Angelica “darling” and “honey” on more than one occasion. “Sweetheart” seemed to be reserved for her, though.
Stop thinking like that.
She cringed as the observation surfaced. She knew she was reading into it, and her mind was running a mile a minute to try and replace the idea with something else, any kind of distraction. She decided to chalk it all up to the caffeine she’d been consuming en masse.
So maybe another latte wasn’t the greatest idea. She pushed herself off of his couch with a grunt.
All she wanted was a glass of water, so she didn't expect that there'd be any problem with her just barging into his kitchen since she was already at his place.
But she'd just turned into the kitchen's doorway, and Thomas wouldn't have minded it if she hadn't turned with the worst timing imaginable.
"Oh, fuck." She felt the coffee scalding her skin before she processed what'd happened. Her grimace was involuntary and pronounced as she stumbled away from him, pulling the back of her shirt as far away from her body as she could. "Shit, shit, shit, that's hot."
"Jesus, are you alright?" It wasn't until a split second later that she turned to see Thomas standing behind her, mortified and frantically going to set down his mugs so he could go to check on her.
But she only shook her head, doing her best to regulate her breathing, control her expression despite the searing pain across her upper back. “Shit, I—” Her voice broke off as she swallowed hard, far from concerned with being a considerate guest when she pushed past him into his kitchen. Thomas was frozen to the spot, watching her rush to the sink and frantically yanking off the nozzle of his sink to run cold water over her shoulder blade (she’d never been more grateful for his bougie interior design). Her focus was nowhere near him.
She had no clue how to treat a burn. However, she didn’t think twice before tearing her shirt off — it was searing her skin.
Her tunnel vision may have blinded her to the larger context of her panic (and for good reason, all things considered), but Thomas was stunned as he watched her strip off her button-down in the middle of his kitchen, run it under water to use it as a rag. She tucked it under her left bra strap so that she could press the cold cloth directly against the burn.
Thomas was gawking. When Y/N caught her breath, turning to him, she met his eyes, and— well, actually, she didn’t meet his eyes. His gaze was focused a good ten inches below her eyes, and she chose to conclude that he was staring at her chest because he was concerned about having burnt her with coffee. The fact that not even a drop of the scalding coffee had touched her chest was a nonissue.
“Do you know anything about treating burns?”
“Not…” He cleared his throat, redirecting his stare up to where her eyes actually were. “Not much. I— Holy shit, are you alright? God… lemme Google it. Hang on.” She tried to catch her breath as Thomas pulled out his phone, and the first thing he said was, “Alright, says you’ve gotta get rid of any clothes over the burn.” He glanced back up at her. “Looks like you’ve got that covered, though.”
“Yeah, I figured that one out for myself. Thanks.” Her tone was dry.
“Right.” Thomas cleared his throat. “You wanna use my shower to run it under cold water, then?”
She nodded frantically, grimacing as she pulled her damp shirt out from under her bra strap, holding that as far from her skin as she could without her bra coming off. “Please.”
It took just about all of Thomas’s willpower to keep his gaze north of her collarbones as he showed her where the bathroom was and told her how to work the shower. If any god happened to be real, he was fairly sure he was being tested that afternoon — and all because he didn’t feel like calculating the curve on his midterms. He could safely say that this was far more difficult.
He gave her a towel and some of his spare clothes to change into, but when she dug the Neosporin out of his medicine cabinet, he heard her call his name.
He knocked on the bathroom door. “Everything alright in there?”
“Yeah, I just…” Her voice was muffled as she trailed off. “I can’t reach the burn.”
“Oh.” He swallowed audibly, although Y/N was far enough that she couldn’t hear it. “D’you… need help?”
“Please.” Her voice was hesitant and nervous.
“Can… can I come in?”
“Yeah, just hang on a second.” There was a pause. Y/N didn't meet his eyes when she came to open the door; she held a towel over her bra-clad chest, one of the straps having slipped off the side of her left shoulder. "I, er… can't reach my back to bandage it. Can you… ?"
Thomas's eyes widened. "Oh, um, yeah. Yeah, I've got it."
"Thanks," she said quietly, and when she turned to the sink, passing him the ointment and gauze as she faced the mirror, she kept her hand towel held over her front. "Sorry about… all this."
"Why're you sorry?" The amusement in his voice eased the tension in her shoulders. "Sorry for gettin' coffee spilled on you? Sorry for havin' skin on your back?"
"Sorry for having burnable skin on my back," she corrected him, and he laughed.
"Yeah, alright, good point. If you weren't so damn flammable we wouldn't have this issue," he teased, but he pursed his lips. "In all seriousness, this one's on me. Wasn't watching where I was goin'; I was the one that ran right into you, not the other way around."
"Yeah, but I was in the way," Y/N pushed back, and Thomas raised a skeptical eyebrow, meeting her eyes in the mirror.
"You've gotta stop apologizing for things, sweetheart. Especially things that I think we both know weren't your fault." How frankly he spoke made her sigh, and in that moment, it felt as if she was back in the entrance of her apartment, clinging to him as he tried to keep himself from pulling her closer. She swallowed her pang of guilt. “Lemme know if this hurts, yeah?”
“Okay.” Her voice was small.
Neither of them spoke as he dabbed ointment onto her wound, and his gentle touch had a warmth filling her skin that had nothing to do with the burn. He stood within inches behind her. The air in his bathroom was tense; both of them were aware of every movement the other made, every brush of their skin against one another, and it took every ounce of her willpower to keep her eyes down, to keep from staring at him in the mirror. She glanced up to see him knitting his brow, concern in his gaze.
He placed the ointment back onto his sink, instead unraveling the gauze he held in his other hand.
"Pass me the medical tape?" The sound of his voice made her look up, meeting his eyes in the mirror. It took her a moment to process his words, but when she did, she broke his gaze immediately, clearing her throat and nodding as she reached for it and handed it back to him.
Her skin tingled as he laid the gauze softly over her wound, doing his best to give her skin room to breathe. She shivered as he taped it down by the sides. "Alright."
"You're done?"
He nodded and although his touch was tentative as he pressed the tape down to her back, it was firm. "Yeah, that should hold. Looks good."
"Okay," she said quietly, giving him a small smile. "Thank you."
When he finished, she expected him to take a step back, to let himself out of the bathroom so she could get dressed, and so she turned to him, anticipating that he'd move out of the way and she could retrieve her clothes from the bathroom floor. However, it was at the same time that she turned that he leaned forward to put the gauze back on the edge of the sink behind the ointment. They moved in synchrony, but it wasn't the synchrony either expected.
They were both far, far too afraid to move, then.
Thomas's hand was on the side of the sink, now to her right as she faced him, and with him leaning into her, between his arm beside her and the rest of his body in front of her, Y/N didn't have much of anywhere to go. Thomas, however, could've moved. He should've moved, too, and he knew that well. But when she turned to him, he found his face mere inches from hers. His nose brushed against her cheek, and with her having used his shower, with her wearing his spare clothes, he could smell the traces of his woody cologne mixing with a sugared scent he couldn't describe as anything other than her. She swallowed hard.
This felt familiar to both of them, by then. The proximity between them was all but second nature with how much time they spent together, with all the late hours in his office or her apartment. But this atmosphere was charged.
Every interaction between them had been measured and meticulous for months — while they had both been pushing boundaries, neither dared to cross them. But this? Neither of them had meant for this to happen. Neither had meant to make it so easy for them to simply fall into each other, but something about it seemed so natural, almost fateful.
Thomas was exercising every last drop of his willpower as he looked down at Y/N's wide eyes, her wet hair, her (his) pajama pants that were far too long for her. He tucked one of her damp locks behind her ear.
"We can't do this." Y/N's words were cautionary as Thomas's eyes wandered to her lips, but there was no feeling behind them. She didn't want him to stop.
"I know." His thumb traced her jaw, and he made no move to step away. He did know that what he was doing was wrong, but with how caught up he was in everything that was her, he was having trouble remembering why. "So stop me before I do something stupid."
She couldn't take a breath. Her voice was trembling.
"I don't think I want to."
He was hesitant to lean in toward her, but when he shifted forward, she met him halfway with every bit as much trepidation, and this kiss was nothing like the night they met. His touch was careful. His lips were slow, savoring the taste of her on his tongue. He held her as if his gentle touch would negate all the implications of their actions, all the damage this might cause.
Because this didn't feel like the illicit affair that Y/N knew it to be. This was Thomas, her friend, her coworker, her fleeting one-night stand, and she held him against her in an embrace like that of a lover, her arms looped around his neck as the side of her nose brushed against his. This was easy. This was natural.
But this was her professor.
"Stop." She pulled away from him, a hand on his chest as she struggled to catch her breath, and Thomas's gaze didn't read as dejection or hurt, but instead it came with an air of concern. The silence that followed her single word was excruciating.
"Y/N?" His voice was hoarse, but it was heavy with guilt. She didn't meet his eyes.
"I… I'm sorry, Thomas. I really…" She trailed off as he took a wary step back; she let out a breath of relief when he was no longer boxing her in against the counter, his hips no longer pinning hers back. "I need to go. I'm sorry."
She left the bathroom in a rush, grabbing her shirt from the floor and pulling it back over her head without a second thought. When she took off, he didn’t try to stop her.

My Captains Sister-Adam Fantilli
Chapter Five
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: Nolan finally realizes what he’s be doing and is ready to fix it.
“This is all your fault. You’re a shit brother and shit captain, it’s no wonder Lucy wanted to study abroad so much to get away from you! You’re so fucking controlling! You treat her like a child! And I’m sorry. I’m so fucking sorry I wish none of this shit fucking happened but it did and now I fucking love your sister and it’s the worst thing in the entire fucking world! God you’re an asshole” Adam rants
Nolan sighs before looking up at Adam “I know”
Adam looks at Nolan confused. He had spent the past three months making his life and his sister’s life a literal hell and all he has to say is ‘I know’
“What?” Adam mutters the first words he can think of
Nolan takes a deep breath before launching into a long apology about his behavior this semester.
Adam accepts Nolan’s apology and Nolan promises to try and stay out of Adam’s relationship with Lucy.
Soon enough the game ends and their coach dismisses the two. Nolan offers Adam a ride home and invites him to come over and talk to Lucy. Adam happily accepts.
———————————————————————
Meanwhile Lucy was watching TV on the couch but her mind was somewhere else. During the game Lucy had received an email with some news. She’s trying to come up with a way to tell Nolan but her thoughts are interrupted when he walks through the door with Adam.
Lucy’s eyes widen when she sees Adam. Adam lets out a little laugh at her reaction.
“I think it’s time we talked, all of us.” Nolan says before taking a seat across from Lucy.
“I have something to tell you guys too.” Lucy says nervous
“Let me go first, Lucy, I want to say I am so sorry for how I treated you. I wasn’t acting like a brother, I was acting more like a dictator and that was so wrong. I know you are not a little girl anymore and you’re right I need to stop treating you like that. You are old enough to make your own decisions and I can see that you have your own life now. I just want you to know that I am really really sorry and I hope you can forgive me. And I know it’s going to take time. And not that you need my permission, but if you and Adam want to be together I won't try to stop you or interfere I promise.” Nolan says very apologetic
A smile breaks across Lucy`s face and she stands up and hugs Nolan. “I forgive you Nol, and I’m sorry too. I know you just want what’s best for me but I do need to learn to make my own decisions.”
Nolan nods and then turns to Adam. “I know I already apologized to you but I want to say it again. Adam, I'm really sorry.”
“It’s alright Cap” Adam says, patting Nolan on the back.
Smiles fill the room as Nolan and Adam hug and Lucy smiles at them.
“Lucy, what did you have to tell us?” Nolan asks.
A wave of worry washes over Lucy as she thinks of how to tell them.
“I applied to study abroad again and I was accepted. I leave after finals” Lucy says worry in her voice
She watches as both Adam and Nolan’s face drop.
“I’m sorry I applied a few weeks ago and I didn`t tell you because we were fighting and Adam I didn’t wanna tell you because I knew you would be upset and ask me to stay.” Lucy says, trying to explain herself.
Adam just looks at her, before shaking his head and walking towards the door.
———————————————————————
Adam trudges through the door of his and Luca’s dorm room, shoulders slumped and eyes red. Luca looks up from his laptop and asks him what’s wrong, but Adam just collapses onto his bed and starts banging his fists on the mattress.
Luca worried, closes his laptop and walks over to Adam. He sits down on the bed next to Adam and starts rubbing his back comfortingly. “Hey, it’s ok, what’s going on?”
Adam lets out a sniffle “Lucy” he manages to say. “She’s going to study abroad again. She’s leaving.”
Luca’s heart sank. Despite him not being a fan of the issues that came with Adam being with Lucy, he knew how much Adam loved her. He knew how much he cared about her and how hard it must be for him to think of her leaving. “I’m sorry man,” he says, squeezing Adam’s shoulder. “That really sucks.”
Adam sits up and wipes his eyes with his sleeve. “It’s not just that,” he says, his voice thick with emotion. “Nolan just apologized to us and everything’s good now-but now this. It’s like, just when things were getting better, she’s leaving.”
Luca nods, understanding. He’s seen first hand how hard it’s been for Adam to navigate his feelings for Lucy. “It’s not fair,” he says softly. “But you know what? You still have time with her before she leaves. And who knows, maybe this will be good for both of you. You’ll have a chance to miss each other, to really think about how you feel about each other and what you want.”
Adam looks at his older brother, despite Adam looking older Luca has always been the older one when it comes to wisdom. Adam thanks him for the advice. Luca smiles and says, “Anytime, little brother”
———————————————————————
The next few weeks went by fast and Lucy and Adam spent as much time together as they could. Lucy even got a chance to meet Adam’s family when they came to visit. Things between her and Nolan were getting much better, and when the time came for Lucy to leave, she knew it would be hard to say goodbye to Adam and Nolan.
Adam and Lucy decided not to do the long distance thing, and instead remain friends and see what happens, when she gets back.

I chose violence here I’m so sorry (IT WILL ALL BE OKAY I PROMISE)
….
“Don't overwhelm me all at once with enthusiasm,” Steve says. Tries to cushion it with a laugh to make it sound like a joke, but it rings loud and fake across the line, even to his own ears. Ha. ha ha.
“Well I only learned of the existence of this great love of yours five minutes ago, so give me a minute to catch up,” Robin says tartly.
“It’s not–”
“Steve,” Robin sighs. “This is a lot, all at once. I’m trying super hard here, and I am also really hungry and all out of Supportive Lesbian Friend energy. So, before I decide it’s for the best that we both hang up and I get a chicken sandwich in my face as soon as possible, I just gotta ask– why are you telling me all this?”
He takes a deep breath. He doesn’t want to fight either, he reminds himself. That’s not why he picked up the phone in the first place. But then, he’s never wanted to fight. “About email guy, or about Eddie? Because I just–”
“Either,” she interrupts. “Both. Why not just put it in an email?”
Because I miss you, Steve wants to say, wants to howl down the line to her in her Alexandria apartment, a place he can’t even picture because he’s never been there. Because I miss you and there’s no one else to tell. Because I wanted to hear your voice.
“Because I don’t know what to do,” he says, finally. Aware that the silence has gone on maybe a little long.
Robin works through a silence of her own.
“I can’t–I won’t– tell you that, Steve,” she says finally. “Because we both know you’ll just do what you want, anyway.”
“That’s not fair, I–”
“Fine, maybe not what you want, but whatever you think someone else needs you to do. Which might seem less selfish, but also might actually be worse. I actually would love for you to do what you want, for once. What you want. Not Dustin, not Suzie, not whatever some stranger needs from you in the moment.”
“So that’s my advice,” she says after a second, maybe realizing Steve can’t or won’t respond to that. “Do whatever you want, Steve. I hope you actually do.”

"Sir, as per your protocol, I am to inform you that Peter is in great emotional distress. He is not in physical distress, I will keep a watch on his vitals"
Tony set his coffee cup down from where he stood in the kitchen with Steve, Bucky and Rhodey. He clears his throat " Thanks Friday, do you know what cause it with out invading his privacy"
" He recieved a phone call and an email from Mr. Osborn's solicitor and lawyers."
He made a face, raising his hand up wipe down his face. Its been a few months since the late Harry Osborn had passed away. He had finally succumb to his mysterious genetic illness. Tony didn't know all of the details but he knows that Harry and Peter were close. The final weeks before Harry passed Peter was at his bedside. The death of his friend devastated the young man. He looked over at Rhodey and then back at Steve and Bucky who both had a solemn look on their faces.
" Let the kid know if he needs anything to let me know. "
" Of course. Peter has informed me he will be in need of Ms. Potts and her publicity skills and possibly the team of lawyers you have on hand. "
" What.... Friday. Once Peter is well enough tell him to come talk. Whatever he needs he can have. But i will need to know whats going on"
" Peter has permissioned the access to his email for your review. A copy has already been sent to Ms. Potts"
Tony turns around and projected the email up in the air in a hologram. Everyone gathered close as they read the email. The shocked look on all there faces, Steve reaching out to hold Bucky's hand as his eyes filled with tears.
" Hey Pete,
If your reading this it means I finally kicked the bucket and the vultures at the company can't legally get away with what they want. And I'm sorry Peter. I wish we had more time and I could prepare you for this, it feels like only a few weeks ago instead of the last couple of years to when we reconnect. I was an ass. And your a mess Peter Parker, but you are my best friend. We have known each other for so long and no matter what we have gone through you stayed my friend even when I didn't deserve it. Your a good person, no fashion sense and those jokes? Horrible. But that makes you, you.
And before you say you dont deserve anything and this was never what you had in mind. Just listen to me for once. You deserve to live the life you deserve. I know I pissed off a lot of people with my will. But Peter if anyone deserves to run Oscorp, its you. Father always liked you, even after everything, he always wanted you helping the company. Even if you decide to sale it, I trust you will do good things, life changing things. I know money doesn't mean anything to you but you will finally be able to get new clothes that are NOT from a thrift shop cause thats just gross Pete.
And yes, you are entitled to this. When the accords happened, I told you I didn't trust Stark as far as I could throw him. He has done good by you now but in the beginning I was the one making sure you were safe. I promised you on your 18th birthday that I would always take care of you. And even though I'm not there. This is me fulfilling that promise.
And I'm sorry you are finding out this way. And I promise I would have fixed it if the time came but until then. Maybe it was me being selfish.
I never signed the papers of the annulment. I paid the judge off. We are still legally married.
Peter Benjamin Parker. I've been in love with you since we were 11. Took me a while to realize that I was jealous of your loving family, your smarts, how you didn't care about my money. I know I was being selfish when you turned 18 and would of needed to sign the accords. Nothing Stark could of done could of protected you. And when I realized this is when I could marry you? I jumped at the chance. My family had the money to protect you in a way Stark couldn't since he had no claims on you legally.
You made me the happiest I have every been when you agreed. We had a great few months together before Father found out and I pulled off the greatest fuck you ever to the family legacy. I know I had to tell you we had to separate. And I knew that it broke your heart but you were so worried about how the public would view me, the company that you signed and told me we could go back to being friends.
I'm glad for the time we had together. Even after we reconnect later, I had no hope of rekindling what we had before. My clock was ticking and I didn't want to hurt you even further. But I guess you were going to be hurt no matter what.
Peter Benjamin Parker you deserve all the love and happiness in the world. I'm glad I got to experience what it means to be loved by you "

Jake had finished reading all of her chats. It seemed that during those two months she had good company with the group, played games with them on her phone, talked about movies and series, all conversations that a group could have. A little nostalgia came over him when he read it all.
He shook his head. It didn't matter, it would be difficult for him to recover that part of that life.
He let out a sigh and decided to take a look at the email. He remembered that she sent him the message to get the video key, but her email came with the subject “We need to talk.” They didn't even have a relationship that already gave him real terror.
He accessed the email, and clicked on the message.
It wasn’t exactly what he expected.
-------------------------------------------------
Subject: We need to talk.
Jake? Is this email secure? Because there are many things I took out, I want to be able to tell you.
The truth is that it was terrible to guess your puzzles with Lilly, but it was worth it because she apologized! No little girl is going to send me away after messing up. What did she think? You could have already sent me a message first, right? Oh God... What am I going to do with you...?
--------------------------------------------------
"I would rather not say it out loud..." Jake whispered, blushing after reading that question in the email.
It was enough that they had been apart for those two months, that his thoughts towards her had increased. His desire to have been by her side had grown stronger.
He preferred to continue reading to calm down. Or so he hoped to do.
--------------------------------------------------
The worst thing is not that, but that I can't stop thinking about the relationship between you and Hannah. Do you know what that is? I don't want to sound jealous
--------------------------------------------------
"You seem like it," he smiled maliciously.
--------------------------------------------------
But to think that maybe all this time you've been lying and that you're really Hannah's lover despite telling me you're not? How do you think I would feel about all our conversations? I would tell you to go to hell! Well, no, I do it in advance because all this mystery that you bring with you is driving me crazy. Why so much obsession with her?
If it turns out that you really are her lover and you have used me all this time, you better prepare yourself because I plan to castrate you for being an idiot.
--------------------------------------------------
Maybe it's because he had never seen that side of her, but he couldn't help but laugh. I had actually imagined her furiously writing the email while frowning. He had seen her make that expression before and thought it was adorable coming from her.
He calmed down a little, seeing a second email from she. In the title was “I'm sorry”. When he started reading it, he laughed again even though he shouldn't have because of how nervous she seemed to be. Maybe because he wasn't expecting a second email?
--------------------------------------------------
Subject: I'm sorry.
I'M SORRY! I'M SORRY! I'M SORRY! I NEVER REALLY MEANT TO INSUE THAT YOUR SISTER WAS YOUR LOVER!
God, now I feel worse for having told you all that. Will you forgive me? I promise I won't castrate you! I won't even be mad at you two! I have been a fool!
I'll prepare whatever food you want when you get back! I'll clean your clothes if you want! But I'm sorry! I didn't know she was your sister! If I had known maybe I wouldn't have sent you the other message in the first place, Sorry!
--------------------------------------------------
Again, he laughed. Although the topic was serious, she made him laugh. It was always like that with her, he had already noticed it. It always made him laugh. Although this time her confusion was more than understandable, but he didn't expect it to be that way. Macie jealous? He must have taken advantage of that, because of how she implied he was jealous with her conversations with Jessy or Aiden.
“I really missed being in touch with you again,” he sighed, closing the email window. “You are the best thing that has ever come into my life, Macie…”

Inspired by a conversation with someone on Twitter and what happened with my sister when she wrote the email to Jake, I hope you liked it 💖

Pull the trigger (Modern!Ivar/Reader)
A/N: Hello! As I said, here's the first chapter of my new fic♥️ I've been working on it for a while and it's halfway done but I wanted to start posting it now. It will have 20 chapters, or at least that's what I'm planning, because I'm still writing chapter 11! Some chapters are a bit longer than others (and others are way longer💀 sorry). It's a bit of a slowburn so maybe the first chapters could feel boring, I hope it's worth it 👀. In the future it will also contain things that can be triggering and that aren't very nice to read, I will write a disclaimer whenever it's necessary (and I always put warnings before the chapters) but this fic is dark, just so you know!
but this chapter is all good I think! so enjoy please❤️ and thank you so so much for reading!
btw it will also be available in AO3, in case you prefer reading it there🫶🏼
Warnings: vague mentions of sex, alcohol... not much, this one is okay👀

Thora hadn't stopped gasping and widening her eyes since she entered the Lothbrok house. Hvitserk had left her in the kitchen, promising he'd be back very soon with some cash and then he'd take her out to dinner. Of course she knew about the Lothbroks' reputation, what they did and their wealth. But she never imagined she'd experience it so closely. Of course her friends had advised her not to go out with Hvitserk Lothbrok, whom, they said, was the most accessible but one of the worst ones in that family. But he had been nothing but sweet and charming to her. It probably wouldn't last, but his green eyes had captivated her enough to make her say yes to a few dates with him. She just didn't expect to visit his family house so soon.
Fortunately, no one seemed to be around. She had already met Ubbe, Hvitserk's older brother, and on their second date they had gone to a concert in which Sigurd, his younger brother, had played with his band. She had seen his mother, Aslaug, in some of the charity events she had organised, and his older half-brother, Björn, had been the visible face of his father's business for years, so she could recognize him anywhere. But they still intimidated her.
The worst part would be encountering Ivar. Hvitserk's little brother alone was more intimidating to her than all of his older brothers together. She hadn't met him yet, she had only seen him from afar. Especially while partying or during university events. It seemed almost impossible that Ivar and Hvitserk were so close, while Hvitserk was playful, teasing and charming, Ivar was dark, intimidating and rude. Hvitserk insisted that his little brother wasn't that bad, that it was just that the world and people hadn't been especially kind to him, so it was just his way of protecting himself.
But, in Thora's opinion, his legs and crutches weren't an excuse to be a dick to everyone.
“Here I am, beautiful" Hvitserk smiled widely at her as he entered, a laptop under his arm and winking before hopping on one of the stools next to the kitchen island "Would you mind if I send a couple of emails before we leave? Ubbe hasn't stopped annoying me with it for the entire day and I would rather not have any interruptions during our date" he smiled apologetically at her, and Thora couldn't help but smile back, nodding.
“Of course, take your time" she smiled “It's still early, we have time"
That wasn't exactly true. In fact, it was a blatant lie. She had promised her group of friends she'd be back in their apartment for their weekly night of pizza and movies, but... They'd understand, right?
“Good" Hvitserk smiled “I'll drive you back home, so you don't need to worry about taxis or anything like that"
Thora bit her lip to hold back a smile, and looked away so she could hide her excited expression.
Just when she was opening her mouth to reply, she heard it.
The crutches.
Hvitserk raised his head to look at his brother. Neither of them had heard the front door opening and closing, but Ivar had just arrived home... Two hours earlier than he was supposed to.
“Hello, Ivar" Hvitserk smirked at him, feeling Thora tensing up and moving close to him “You're early"
“Didn't think you'd be home" Ivar muttered as his iced eyes roamed around Thora's figure “And that you'd have company"
“Be nice, Ivar" Hvitserk sighed.
“I don't think my brother has introduced us" he moved like a serpent, and while his movements were slow, Thora feared he'd jump over her at any moment.
“I'm Thora" she cleared her throat. Never mind how anxious she felt in his presence, she refused to let him know that.
“Nice name" Ivar nodded slowly, a smirk on his lips “I look forward to seeing you around here, Thora" and his eyes went back to his brother “I hope she doesn't end up like Margrethe"
Thora frowned. She had heard about Margrethe. She was once the most popular girl in town, fooling around with all of the Lothbroks for a while, and then was Ubbe's girlfriend before he broke up with her.
“Ivar" Hvitserk sighed.
His brother pouted with an innocent expression and looked back to Thora one last time before he turned around, leaving.
“Ignore him" Hvitserk shot her a charming smile “He enjoys getting on my nerves, he won't bother us again"
Thora nodded, biting her lip as Hvitserk pressed send on the second email and closed the laptop, turning to kiss her softly.
“Let's go, then"
_______________________________________
“I can't believe she stood us up" you scoffed, shaking your head and staring at your phone “For a guy"
“Thora hasn't dated in like forever" Ingrid shrugged, laying back on the couch with her eyes fixed on the TV “It's normal that she wants to spend time with him"
“But it's Hvitserk" you raised an eyebrow “Like... It's the last guy she should be dating"
“She's a grown up, she can take care of herself, Y/N" Astrid chuckled.
“I don't like his family" you pressed your lips together “They act like they own Kattegat, they walk around barking orders to everyone else and expect them to comply, the police know they're not clean and they won't do anything! It's just unfair"
“They're almost royalty" Ingrid sat to grab the gin bottle you had left on the table “No one is brave enough to stand up to them and no one wants to, they practically built this city"
“But how?" you narrowed your eyes.
“Does it really matter when it has benefited most of the population?" she shrugged “My father told me that before Ragnar came here Kattegat was much smaller, it barely had any trading and all the money went to Haraldsson Industries, Ragnar built this city"
You rolled your eyes. You honestly couldn't understand the devotion most of the people would show that family, just because they had money! You remembered all those articles you had read about them, that went as far as to call them "the king and princes of Kattegat", even though Ragnar Lothbrok hadn't stepped foot on Kattegat in years. In university, only two of the brothers continued their studies, and you had some classes in common with one of them.
When you had arrived in Kattegat to start university you already knew about them. Björn and Ubbe Lothbrok were famous in all of Europe, and their younger brother Hvitserk -now Thora's... Friend- had been the protagonist of some of the biggest scandals you had ever read about. Parties in Saint Tropez, Sicily, Ibiza, Mykonos, Dubrovnik...  Hvitserk always was in the middle of the scandals, which his brothers tried to clean as quickly as possible so no one would learn the name of the lady that surrendered to their brother's charms. Ubbe was the only one you held some sympathy for, he looked nice and sweet. You hadn't had that much contact with his older half-brother and had avoided Hvitserk as much as you could.
Sigurd wasn't that close to his brothers, he spent his days at university, where he studied music and composition. Instead of a yacht in the Mediterranean, Sigurd could be found in the auditorium, rehearsing with his band or practising his next recital. You had never talked to him, and had no intention of doing so.
Ivar was the worst, with a difference.
Being a student interested in politics, history and geopolitical issues, you had some classes with him, who studied a mix of politics, history and Scandinavian studies. He didn't even need those studies, he already had a secured position in his father's business, being the brightest of them. And you didn't ever know why he bothered to attend the classes, as he always looked bored and had gone as far as to correct the professors and roll his eyes at their explanations. It was like he believed himself to be better than everyone, and even if he didn't pay attention in class, he had the highest grades, which also annoyed you to no end.
Some people said Ragnar also had a daughter, Björn's sister, that lived in Hedeby, a town not that far from Kattegat, with her mother. As you didn't know her, you couldn't have an opinion but if she was half as... Irritating as her brothers, you were fine with not knowing her.
But what bothered you the most about that family was their money. It was impossible to gain that much money with a normal business like the one they ran, and everyone knew they also had business with drugs, ams trafficking, blackmailing... But no one did anything. They had played dirty for a ridiculous amount of money and you had to keep searching for jobs to help pay rent and groceries and were always running low at the end of the month.
“Y/N, you can stop stabbing the ice cream now" Astrid sounded amused, and her voice startled you. Looking down, you saw the bowl and the spoon buried in it so deep that you almost folded it when you took it out.
“Look, if you're eventually right and Hvitserk does break Thora's heart..."
“When he breaks Thora's heart" you corrected, narrowing your eyes.
“Whatever" Ingrid rolled her eyes “If he does, you will have our blessing and our help kicking his ass"
You didn't reply, your eyes going back to the forgotten tv, a bit annoyed because they didn't seem to care about the fact that Thora was out there with a criminal.
When the movie ended, the three of you went to bed. You had sent a couple of messages to Thora but she didn't reply, and as neither Astrid nor Ingrid seemed too interested in your anti-Lothbrok ranting, you made a late FaceTime call to your best friend as soon as you laid down in bed.
Even if it was past midnight, you knew Alfred would be awake. He accepted your call and looked a bit tired as he greeted you with a smile. You could see he was still in his office. He worked for Ubbe Lothbrok, which was one of the reasons why he was the only one you held some sympathy for. Ubbe seemed to adore Alfred, and he was quite happy with his job, which allowed him to continue his studies.
“Isn't it a bit late for you to be working?" you frowned.
“I prefer to work at night, Y/N" he sighed. It was true. When you lived with him he always studied at night, he always said he preferred the silence and the quietness of the night, helped him to focus. You kind of understood him.
“Yes but..."
“No, Y/N, I'm not being exploited at work" he chuckled “Elsewith is visiting her parents, so between staying here and being productive or being alone at home..."
“You could come here" you pouted. Since he moved in with his girlfriend and you moved in with the girls, you didn't see him as much as you'd like to. It was really strange to go from seeing him every day to seeing him a couple of times a week in class.
“I wouldn't dream of ruining one of your girls' nights, Y/N" he smiled fondly at you.
“Well it was already ruined" you scoffed, looking away “Thora left us to go fool around with Hvitserk"
Alfred's eyebrows raised with interest.
“They're together?"
“No, they're just... Fucking around, and no one will listen to me when I say this is going to end badly"
“I think your prejudice is talking for you here, Y/N" he chuckled “Look, I know these people more than you, they're not that bad. I don't have that much contact with Hvitserk, but I'm sure he's not that bad"
“I don't trust him, he's got a reputation..."
“But Thora is a big girl, Y/N, just like you, and she can take care of herself, don't sabotage your friend's relationship just because you think you know better than her"
You pressed your lips together, finally realising no one would support you against them. Only time would prove you right.
“I'm hungry" you frowned, looking at the clock. Would it be too late to go to the kitchen and eat a sandwich? You had barely eaten that night, too distracted hating on your friend's boyfriend “I'll run to the kitchen, wait" you left your phone leant on your bed as Alfred nodded and focused on his laptop again.
But as soon as you stepped out of your room, crossing the hallway to reach the kitchen and already thinking about the sandwich, you heard giggles and low voices.
Thora sat on the counter, a blonde guy with long hair stood between her legs, but fortunately they both were still dressed. They kissed and touched each other in a way that almost made you gag. Until Thora saw you, stopping immediately as a soft blush covered her cheeks.
“Y/N, hi" she smiled, widening her eyes. The guy turned around and you were face to face with Hvitserk Lothbrok. His green eyes fixed on you and scanned your face and body with a smirk. You had to admit he was handsome, and that he had a different vibe than his brothers.
“Y/N" he bit his lip, visibly amused “I've heard a lot about you, it's nice to meet you"
“Hi" you raised an eyebrow, looking at Thora “I wish I could say the same"
Hvitserk chuckled as Thora sighed, shaking her head with a small smile on her face.
“I just wanted something to eat and I'll leave you alone" you shrugged, opening the fridge and trying to ignore Hvitserk's smirk.
“I know you have harsh opinions about my family" he shook his head “But I hope you don't mind if I spend the night"
“I was going to ask you, but I thought you were already asleep" Thora smiled apologetically.
“I was talking to Alfred" you shrugged, opening and closing the fridge a bit more forcefully than you intended.
“Oh little Alfred" Hvitserk looked very amused at your annoyance “Yes, Thora mentioned more than once that the two of you are close"
You ignored him, taking a plate to start making your sandwich in silence.
Thora looked at Hvitserk and pointed at the living room with a small smile, knowing you'd be much open when he left.
“Are you mad at me?" she bit her lip and tilted her head at you. You narrowed your eyes at her “I'm sorry I didn't come to our weekly girls' night, I'll make it up to you" she smiled apologetically, and you tried to avoid her gaze.
“You know what I think about the Lothbroks, Thora" you muttered, not really wanting Hvitserk to hear you. It was one thing to be distant and another one to be blatantly rude.
“Yes, but Hvitserk is really nice" she pouted "I swear, Y/N, he's nice, sweet, charming, funny..."
You widened your eyes and raised an eyebrow, finally turning your head to look at her.
“Don't you dare fall in love with him" you pointed your finger at her. She giggled and shook her head, putting your hand away.
“I'm serious, Y/N, if you gave him a chance and got to know him a bit more, you'll be surprised, I think the two of you could get along very well if you tried"
“Look, if you want to date him, it's fine by me, I don't care if you bring him home as long as you don't have sex on the couch, the couch is sacred, but don't force me to spend time with him and most importantly, when he breaks your heart don't come crying at me because I will only say 'I told you'"
Thora smiled widely, giggling as she leant in to hug you.
“I love you, you're the best friend ever, your couch is safe" she kissed your cheek “I know you will be there whenever I need you, you can't fool me"
You rolled your eyes when she finally stepped back, with a small smile on your lips. You quickly finished the sandwich, turning to the fridge again to put the food back and giving her a last look before kissing her cheek and leaving the kitchen.
“Good night, Y/N" Hvitserk, sitting on your beloved couch, smirked at you “It was a pleasure meeting you"
You sighed, but shot him a forced smile before going back to your room.
“I like her" Hvitserk chuckled when Thora joined him on the couch “Ivar would love her"
Back in your bedroom, you listened to Alfred ranting about the latest essay he had to hand in and how hard it was for him to find new sources as you ate the sandwich, but you had only one thing in your mind.
The Lothbrok's were shady, and as you seemed to be the only one that saw it, you had to be the one opening everyone's eyes.
