All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), directed by Edward Berger, follows Paul Bäumer, an 18 year-old German boy who volunteers to fight in WW1, fueled by discourses of patriotism and promises of a heroic status. Only when he's pushed to the front lines of the battlefield and faces the real horrors of war, he realizes there's nothing honorable about dying for his country.
It's very easy for war films to take sides or fall into a romanticization of the subject. All Quiet on the Western Front manages to avoid those clichès and brings together what is probably the best anti-war film ever made. Beautifully shot, with a haunting soundtrack and superb performances that glue together a message so powerful and more relevant than ever.
"Honor? My son was killed in the war. He doesn't feel any honor."

Review: Heartbreak High
★★★★☆ - 4 stars
"Just remember, high school, it mostly sucks. But it's one time in your life. You're gonna be okay."
Tumblr media
If the SOUR album by Olivia Rodrigo was a TV Show it would be Heartbreak High. A modern version of the original 90s show, Heartbreak High tells the tale of the students of Hartley High after the so-called 'Incest Map' gets revealed, and the drama that entails as a result of their newly formed sexual health class ('SLTs' - subsequently named 'Sluts' by the students). The cast is extremely diverse, with representation of different racial groups, genders, sexualities, and disabilities. The most wonderful form of representation is undoubtedly the authentic autistic representation through the outstanding Chloe Hayden as Quinni Gallagher-Jones. Autistic representation is extremely rare in the media and Heartbreak High manages it perfectly, with one of the most accurate depictions of overstimulation ever seen on screen. This is a TV show made for Gen-Z that actually portrays the generation extremely well, in all its wacky wonder. A tale of love, sex, and drama, Heartbreak High perfectly encapsulates teenage rage in a montage of hysterically funny and thrilling moments.

I saw “Glass Onion” a few days ago with one of my cousins. Just some miscellaneous thoughts:
1) I hope Jeremy Renner has seen the movie. If he hasn’t, he definitely should once he gets out of the hospital.
2) Some of the cameos were…random. Like, yes, the role of “vaccination checker” definitely needed the talent of Ethan Hawke to bring out the complex layers of the role. But seriously, it feels like some of the actors were just bored and had a free day to help Rian Johnson out.
3) I did like how the movie was structured. It was sort of a pseudo-Rashomon where instead of conflicting accounts, we were just not seeing the full picture because we were not aware of a different character’s POV. It’s actually clever.
4) If I had to nitpick, I was a little annoyed that Benoit Blanc was written in a way that he just happens to know the answer to everything. Yeah, I know, he’s the detective, but the way he’s written in the movie makes him feel omnipotent. It’s fun to figure the mystery out along with the character, so it’s a little disappointing when the mystery is just solved for the audience, if that makes sense. It’s like they’re telling us what was happening instead of showing, which isn’t necessarily a deal breaker, but can still be annoying.
5) My cousin: “Jessica Henwick was just vibing in the movie lol. Everyone else had these big dramatic roles, and then there’s Jessica just showing up every now and then.”
6) Rian Johnson claims this movie isn’t about Elon Musk…but I feel Musk had to have inspired this movie a teensy bit. Maybe that’s just Rian covering his ass so he doesn’t get sued for defamation.
7) Amogus
8) If I had to pick a cast member who stood out, I’d obviously pick Janelle Monae. But Batista definitely gets second place, he really killed it as Filipino/Greek Andrew Tate.
9) Okay, another nitpick. I liked the overall movie, but I did not like the “look how quirky I am!” tone that Johnson was going for. It’s fine for the first third of the movie, but just becomes obnoxious as the movie goes on. I would’ve preferred a more mature, grounded mystery, but hey, that’s just me.
Overall review: As someone who didn’t care for “Knives Out” (I think I gave that movie a letter grade of C or C-), I thought “Glass Onion” was a massive improvement. The mystery was better thought out, the characters were more engaging, and, aside from Jessica Henwick, the cast was better utilized. I just would’ve preferred less quirkiness and a climax that wasn’t just Daniel Craig explaining the mystery. So, for a letter grade, I give it an A-.

Scrooge: Old Vs New
Tumblr media
There’s a few posts I wanted to make. The new Guardians Of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Disenchanted. Slumberland. Wednesday. That one Moon Knight fan fic sitting in my drafts. But I’ve got to talk about this.
Scrooge: A Christmas Carol on Netflix came out this year in 2022. While Critics haven’t been too kind to it (I’ll get to my theory why in a second) y’all on Tik Tok and Tumblr have been losing your minds. You’re falling in love with the music (particularly Later Never Comes). But mostly…many of you have this reaction.
Tumblr media
The surprising hottie in question being this rendition of Ebenezer Scrooge.
Tumblr media
And I get it. As is tradition in animated takes of Dickens immortal classic, the animators clearly took inspiration from their voice actor Mr. Luke Evans. And Mr. Evans is a very handsome man. So I’m right there with you guys simping over an old man with a sexy voice.
But! I would be remiss if I failed to educate my fellow fangirls, fanboys and all between that this movie…is technically a remake.
youtube
Directed in 1970 by Ronald Neame, Scrooge was nominated for Four Academy Awards and won a Golden Globe. Quite an achievement in a time when movie musicals were fading in popularity. And it’s composer Leslie Bricusse (who also helped bring Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to life) was an executive producer and helped write the screenplay for this new version. And since he passed away last year, the animated film is dedicated to him.
Of the original eleven songs, five were carried over to the new movie. Happiness. I Like Life (with updated lyrics). Beautiful Day, Thank you Very Much and I Will Begin Again. Yet while the original movie received generally positive reviews from critics, the new movie only holds a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. What’s the difference? I mean the animation is very nice. Sometimes downright gorgeous. Obviously the music works. I’ve heard people praising both the new songs as well as the older ones. And they actually add depth to the original story.
Well if I had to guess, the new version is very much catering to kids versus families. The Ghost of Christmas Present has cute little Minion like critters. They cut the line of Scrooge saying, “If They (the poor) would rather die then they better do it. And decrease the surplus population!” I guess because it’s too mean? Speaking of, they give Scrooge a dog named Prudence. I guess to show the kids that he’s not all bad. He has a cute doggy! He’s kinda indifferent to the dog but hey! Don’t look at the scary imagery of Scrooge watching his own ghost rise from his grave! Look at the puppy! Look at the puppy! I mean Mr. Magoo kept the mean lines in as did the Muppet’s. Plus they trusted kids with the scary stuff.
Yeah as cute as those reindeer antlers on her looked at the end, Prudence was definitely a studio note and serves no purpose. She could be cut and you wouldn’t miss anything. Plus I’m not a fan of the opening number. Too peppy and modern. I wished they had done an update of the song that opens the 1970 movie, “A Christmas Carol “
youtube
Plus I love this song from Cratchit. It’s so Christmas… I wish this one made the cut.
youtube
But I do like the new version. Later Never Comes goes way harder than “You” and Luke Evans really balances out Scrooge being an old curmudgeon and a man who knows and regrets his choices. Plus the whole thing is animated like a dream. I love Luke Evans singing “I will Begin Again.” It’s a song of hope, passion and joy. And when Albert Finney’s Scrooge sings it …well… he tried…I can’t post it here but trust me. Luke Evans is a major upgrade. They make up for it with the finale in the 1970’s version where they almost reprise every song in the movie. Plus my parents always like how they made Albert Finney up to really look like a miser than doesn’t cut his hair or even clean his nails or his house. And technically Albert Finney was a sex symbol back in the day. Where he played both the old and young versions of Scrooge. So having a sexy Scrooge is technically precedent…
So give the original movie a watch if you like this one. It can be it’s own kind of goofy at times, but it’s definitely worth a yearly viewing. As is the new version on Netflix.

I’m not sure how many people would qualify The Wonder as a horror movie, it sits itself quite prettily in the ‘period drama’ section of Netflix, but I’ll be damned if I don’t give it a fair shake as what I felt the movie truly was, and that’s a horror film. Normally I’d put an enticing gif here of something, but either the title is too vague or the movie hasn’t hit its stride yet, so unfortunately my words will have to suffice.
Right off the bat: the framing device is weird and I didn’t like it, so let’s choose to ignore it here because it proved itself entirely pointless and useless. It’s barely a couple of minutes at the beginning and end anyway. As if the movie wasn’t artsy enough with its popular gray washes and dirt and a sense of ‘naturalism.’ Head’s up: If you are looking for a colorful piece of cinema, look elsewhere.
The Wonder is an inverse exorcism movie. Not quite on the same level as the Shudder original Anything For Jackson, the term inverse is most applicable here, while Jackson is more reverse. The question of what that means is easily answered: Wonder isn’t about a demon, it’s about applying divinity to someone and wanting it to be there beyond reason. It’s characters wish to put Holiness into someone rather than remove, or in Jackon’s case insert, the unholy from within.
It is an intelligently made twist of the religious horror genre, and garners emotions of a different stroke. If we consider exorcism movies to be horror, then so too should The Wonder be considered horror. It plays on the same tropes, the same pace, the same escalation, yet does not view the phenomenon as of the devil, but rather of Christ.
This movie is horrifying. Perhaps it’s the fact that genre star Florence Pugh is in it, or that the whole cast is made up of experienced actors of genre across the board, but it’s unfathomable how anyone could see it as anything else. Set in the late 1800s just after The Great Hunger in Ireland, something generally accepted as the fault of the British, the plot follows Pugh as English nurse Elizabeth, or Lib, sent to watch and investigate whether or not Anna, a fasting girl who apparently hasn’t eaten for several months, is legitimate and ‘a wonder.’ To quote: “[They are] eager to see the wonder in every ordinary child.”
Her investigation is thorough, and without spoiling anything there were definitely one or two details that took me by surprise. Wonder places itself in the new age of horror, this age of what I prefer to call “emotional horror,” where fear is derived from character reaction, intense feelings exchanged, and the revelation of secrets. It is belief in this movie, faith, that are the chains that bind. To be frightened of someone’s faith, and of what that faith may mean, is certainly not a new idea, but one not usually applied to Catholicism or any derivatives of Christianity.
To the modern film, Christianity is the true ‘holy’ faith system. How often have we seen Louisiana Voodoo, or Judaism, or Islam put on the brutal chopping block of horror’s worser, racist tendencies towards faiths? Or villains? Black people, practitioners, Muslims, Jewish characature, Romani peoples, indigenous populations, all victims of the horror genre. But here we have an unspoken fear, universal all in its own right, but decidedly white and European. Unlike other pieces of Catholic horror, however, we don’t deal with devilish nuns or lesbian affairs or dancing in the wood at the witching hour. This movie is about belief, holy faith, and nothing devilish ever graces the text. It deals with the female self image through the illness of anorexia miribalis, which is exactly what it sounds like. While men are allowed to pay penance through self flagellation or other pains of the flesh, it was this way in which women were found to seek holy suffering.
It deals with literacy and understanding through Kitty’s plot, played by Niamh Algar from Censor, which I loved, and the abuse of youth and women. A nun is present to watch young Anna as well, but who is she to speak out against the parish priest? The question the movie begs is simple, yet answered easily enough. There’s a question of complicity. After all, “All over the empire, are not children left to die in ditches and gutters every night of the year?”
Fire is used as a purging thing, a holy flame, and the setting allows for us to naturally draw parallels to the burning of witches, and constantly makes reference to the eternal burning of Hellfire. You can hardly go a minute without the reminder that the ‘miracle’ girl Sarah is sure her brother is burning forever, and the mystery to why is definitely a hardy gut punch. Even if you read the film right, it’s still rough as Hell, pun intended.
The Wonder is smart that way, clever, slow. Very slow, at times. It builds, of that there is no doubt, but it wouldn’t have suffered 15-20 minutes shaved off. Much like we stare at Pugh’s ever-dirtying dress, the sound of Pugh’s feet plodding along through the mud can be rather indicative of the pacing. As mentioned, it’s a gray, almost bland looking film, alternating from overcast outdoor settings to dimly lit candlelight vigils. The use of lighting is, thank god, meticulously designed, which feels like a dying art in this day and age. You can see, but you can also not see. And such is the dichotomy not only of the visuals, but of the concept of the holy spirit. It makes the viewer question who is right, and who is wrong. Darkness so often represents wickedness, or even two facedness. But does it here? Or is it those who are seen in all their glory who are the evildoers? Those who hide in the shadow versus those who are bathed in light.
If you like religious horror, this is a movie for you. If you’re new to religious horror, this might be a really great starting point. There are no jump scares, no gore, no demonic possession. Just plain old human dread. I’ve always liked the feeling of dread in my horror.
Completely pointless framing device aside, The Wonder was a good, if jammed movie that was just a little bit too long. There are a lot of things to think about here; probably being worth a second, or maybe even a third viewing, depending on your taste. The acting was sublime and did in fact live up to the promise of the opening monologue that every character on screen truly believes what they are experiencing is real, an astoundingly bold claim for a horror movie, a genre not exactly known for its groundbreaking performances. Still, there is not one performance, not one moment that fell flat, or felt unbelievable.
Shortcomings aside, it is still worthy of a definite 4/5*

Ok I'm giving a show review for "The Imperfects" 2022
Don't forget there will be spoilers as I go on further
Let's start off with the fact that you can watch this in less then a day. I'm slightly upset there isn't going to be more because I genuinely enjoyed the plot and the characters as I found them interesting.
I've seen some people say the plot is fast but I personally prefer a faster plot otherwise shows loose my interest. I'm also aware that the faster plot was probably needed for a first season.
I liked the main cast. So I'm going to rate them aswell
Abbi as an Ace succubus is fun and she did seem not ditzy but definitely seemed to forget she could be helpful in some parts but she was continually show reluctance to use her own powers so I rate her a 7.5/10
Tilda annoyed me a bit in her personality but it's also because I've met people like her other the banshee powers were cool, I did enjoy her being on screen however. 6/10
Jaun, I was calling him baby boy by episode 3. I put him in the "looks like a cinnamon roll but can kill you" category. His chupacubra form being called chupi gives me life. 10/10
Alex Sarkov... I hate him :D. But in the sort of way one hates umbridge because he has the perfect puchible personality whilst also subverting several tropes 9.5/10
Sydney was probably the most boring of the main cast but she did have some moments. 5/10
The things that I'd say put the show down is the fact that it was probably going to be cancelled from the start meaning everything was rushed and a cliffhanger finally hoping to grab more viewers.
Some lines and scenes also didn't quite work.
Scenes and other things I enjoyed (heavy spoilers that weren't in the trailer)
The amount of bodies buried by the main trio
"Chupi"
Sarkov having an Australian actor
The whole discussion over dogs over people
The whole Sydney escape scene I enjoyed
The fact that the Aussies actors best friends name is Sydney
Jaun being introduced by lying in a field covered in blood and being confused.
My Nose
Also add in Jauns niece not being a snitch and Abbi's brothers.
Overall I put the show at a 8.5/10 because I feel like it could have been better if it had the budget. I do love the actors chosen for it however.
Currently the show is cancelled so I'm doing this to hopefully get people to watch it so I can either watch more of a show or have more fanfiction to read

You know what I love about the andor show? What is so insanely refreshing?? I’ve been finding with phase 4 marvel and even some non-disney stuff that either 1 of 2 things happens
1. We get walked through all the emotional pacing of the show. The characters over explain, completely on the nose, how they feel to each other constantly. Going on about breakups like yeah it does suck but the attempt at making it relatable comedy just reminds me of watching zoey 101 back in the day like you’re full grown adults that have ruled kingdoms, run businesses, performed life saving surgeries and now you have the emotional coping skills of someone who’s only just discovered hot topic?? Like, zero nuance, subtlety, room for subtext. I’m sorry conversations don’t sound like that. How often do you hear people over explain their exact emotions??
2. Fourth wall breaks where all of the above more or less happens, but character speaks directly to audience to walk us through, rather than other characters. (2022 persuasion a great example of this done poorly).
Do you assume your audience has ZERO emotional intelligence? Why is stuff being written like an episode of blues clues like “can you spot what hurt them? There it is! Good job!”
Like BRO. Stop assuming I don’t freaking understand what you’re feeling. Stop assuming we are too lazy or dense to parse conversations (that are visual and so we have body language to work with too!) for subtext. For hidden meaning. For nuance.
And Andor did not fall into that trap. There is so much behaviour to analyze. He’s a fast learner, he pays attention to his surroundings and adapts to his circumstances. Someone made a comment on here that said “and it isn’t with a quip or a wink that we’re told he’s a fast learner” we just get to watch. Someone else pointed out how when he’s young we don’t get translated/subtitles we just watch the body language and know what’s up on his home planet bc we don’t need someone to hold our collective hand in order to understand a scene or it’s gravity.
And and and that’s not to say they decide not to deal with heavy things, whether personal or social etc. We have the rant from the techy dude can’t think of his name just now about how the empire distracts you with 40 incidents instead of one atrocity. But it’s written into the characters and scenes so well it doesn’t feel like we are in a classroom. It’s a group of radicals and rebels of course they have strong beliefs and it’s being explained to the new guy. It works.
Freaking. Thank. You.
Andor is probably the best Star Wars thing I’ve seen in years. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk lol

2022 E-YIR
At the end of the year, I tend to draw a summary of my year, important news events, and things that made me happy. Last year, because we had a wealth of entertainment, I decided to dedicate some pages to those things that kept us entertained when we still couldn’t get out and socialize much. This year in keeping with tradition, I’m highlighting some of the things I watched. I’ll do another page of the games I’ve played this year. Finally, I think I’ll touch on some manga/comics I’ve read to round it all out.
It has been an interesting year in a new house. Also, it feels good to get back to doing conventions and seeing friends new and old. May you all have and be able to take advantage of fortuitous opportunities in the new year.

Qala and consent!
When I listened to the song everyone on Instagram is obsessed with, and have used to create over a million reels, I had a moment of clarity about its lyrics! I heard Ghodey Pe Sawaar, from Qala on a loop, and I realized its brilliance.
“Dheere dheere
Jatan karne se, dulhaniya ke khulte
Hriday ke dvar hai
Jaane balma ghode pe kyu sawaar hain?”
[Slowly slowly
Express our affection, Bride’s heart would
Open its doors
Wonder why dearest is mounted on the saddle of urgency?]
