— Sort've a mix between Sarah Jane, Rose, and Donna — but she gets Donna's ending.

— Adopting Bobbie's idea that Hannah is Katherine's mother, Mrs. Pulitzer is her step-mother! There is a Father's Day esque episode where the Doctor takes Katherine back to meet her mother before she was born.

— From Massachusetts.

— Her family is the Plumbers in this !! However they are related to the Pulitzer's still, they're just a bit further down the bloodline.

— Is brought back in time to the newsboys strike and accidentally causes it.

— Journalist! She writes articles while on the TARDIS, she likes it because she feels like she has all the time in the world to finish her writing.

— The Doctor calls her Kate, Jack calls her Kitty (oh how i love different nicknames 4 the name Katherine)

— She was planning on staying with The Doctor forever. just so you know. just like Donna. obviously that doesn't go very well.

— She, however, DOESN'T simply just miss every weird alien event that happens, she just prefers not to think about them because they 1. hurt her head & 2. make no sense. obviously.

— She meets Race (who is River in this au) once !!! He has heard so much about her (particularly how lovely she was) but it's so odd for him to meet her (from his perspective, at least)

— i am definitely forgetting some details that i'll regret not adding to this post later but it's okay.

You've read a million newsies high school AUs, so here's the newsies high school ten-year-reunion AU.

Jack was senior class president, but he's MIA, so Katherine and Specs planned the whole thing. Katherine chose the theme, Kings and Queens of New York, even though Specs told her it was kind of cheesy.

Buttons has a PhD in medieval history; he arrives at the hotel function room in a replica of a 14th century robe that is extremely period-accurate. Crutchie and his wife interpreted the theme in a more whimsical way; Crutchie is wearing what looks like a vintage 1920s mink stole with the head and paws attached, plus a pair of gold glitter cat ears. Everyone else just wore nice clubbing outfits with maybe a tiara or something.

Romeo is single right now, but seems to be feeling the need to come out to all of his old friends, one by one, even though they have all seen his tik toks by now.

Spot and Mush both ran out to the dancefloor from opposite sides of the room when they heard the DJ play the first notes of Beyonce's "Countdown" at the beginning of the night. They never hung out in high school, but they have been dancing together for hours. Spot has lost her spike heels. Every time Mush tries to leave to get food or a drink, she pulls him back.

Oscar and his boyfriend are making out by the bar. They don't talk to anyone else.

Yesterday, David found a box of stuff from high school in the basement storage room at his mom's apartment -- programs from graduation, a random copy of the school newspaper -- and he arrived early to scatter this memorobilia on the tables to surprise everyone. He keeps overhearing Elmer proudly telling different people that Buttons is a doctor now, without context, and it is kind of driving him bananas. He's also annoyed that Jack didn't show up, though he realizes he should have known better than to get his hopes up.

Meanwhile, Racetrack is already drunk and is going around the room spreading the word that everyone is going to meet up at Jacobi's on West 6th after the reunion to shoot pool.

Finch and his girlfriend are into CrossFit and are both super buff. It makes Finch's head look weirdly small. JoJo now owns his own business and drops this fact into every conversation. Albert is still trying to make it as a stand-up comic.

The food at the buffet is actually pretty good, but the open bar ends at 8. Luckily, Morris brought a bottle of Espolòn Blanco tequila to share. Even Katherine has some. Morris and Tommy Boy show each other too many pictures of their kids.

The hotel kicks them all out at 10 pm sharp.

David knows he has to get up early the next morning to drive back home to Pennsylvania, but he decides to go to Jacobi's anyway. When he gets there, he sees Racetrack and Crutchie playing eight-ball in the back. Crutchie is still wearing his tattered mink stole and is losing badly, though to be fair, he has to lean against the table edge for balance every time he takes a shot. Crutchie's wife, who is very pretty, is at the bar drinking whiskey with Spot, who has on the cat ears now. No one else from their high school seems to be there.

David texts Katherine and learns that most people went to a trendy new dance club uptown instead. They even paid a cover.

Tough shit, he texts her. Get over here. For old times sake. And he orders a Miller and tells Racetrack and Crutchie he's got the winner.

ok sooooo @roideny wanted to know who lives/dies, and i have basically nothing to do at work today so i’m here to deliver!! this is so fucking sad y’all

jack: as we know from the first fic, he unfortunately dies of septic shock due to an infected wound </3 he was a captain in the army and bravely led his company til the bitter end

davey: survives! but with all the trauma that an army doctor could possibly endure. poor thing saw jack for the first time in a decade while operating on him, and then had to watch him die. im sorry about it but im also not.

kath: sincerely tries to go overseas as a war correspondent but unfortunately being a woman in wwi didn’t allow that. she’s married to davey in this au, so she ends up using his letters home as a firsthand source for articles about the horrors he sees in the field hospital

race: survives, honorably discharged with severe burns and a case of shellshock (which is actually a traumatic brain injury in his case) after being caught in an explosion. he makes it home, but he’s never quite the same

crutchie: survives, safely at home in nyc! i think he’s married and settled down, and he works a nice little desk job at a newspaper or a library or something. he wishes he could do more for the war effort, but he’s secretly grateful that his disability came in clutch and meant he didn’t have to go overseas

spot: also safe at home! he works in the navy yard pier, building ships - he wanted to enlist with race, but he’s got a bad back and was ineligible to serve. he takes very good care of race for the rest of their lives <3

albert: loses an arm, but survives. he’s a very good sport about it, especially when he runs into both davey and race in the hospital! he considers himself very lucky, bc he’s got a wife and kids to get home too - the man can balance a baby and a bottle in one hand like nobody’s business

finch: survives a major gas attack in the war, but ultimately dies of influenza later on - the mustard gas totally fucked his lungs, so when the 1918 pandemic comes along, he’s just too vulnerable to the respiratory symptoms

elmer: my poor baby…. he’s the first familiar face davey sees in the hospital, and he dies on the operating table. he got shot in the trenches and was lucky enough to make it to the hospital, but he’d already lost too much blood.

Jack Kelly, The Lone Wolf

Jack had never been one for friends. Growing up he was moved from place to place, foster homes and running away, trying to make a way for himself. When he’s seventeen, he manages to run away, taking shelter in the woods in Central Park. He encounters a wolf as he’s trying to sleep. The thing bites him and runs off before he can react and pain rushes through him as he slowly transforms into the monster he will forever be.

It takes Jack many years alone to get used to his transformations, eventually able to do it at Will unless under the control of a full moon. He hunts in the woods at night and has a relatively normal life during the day, though he ages much slower than normal humans. Jack goes to college and has a job at a local coffee shop for a few years, but one night when he’s hunting in the woods, he’s lured into a trap by a very dangerous monster hunter and scientist, William Snyder. Snyder keeps him in a cage and manages to find a drug that keeps Jack in his wolf form for long periods of time. Snyder uses him as a pet, a guard dog to hunt other monsters. Jack has no choice but to do it, a shock collar around his neck and no way to get out.

Eventually, Jack does escape, running as fast as he can so he can stop the hunter from hurting anyone else.

Katherine Plumber, the Ghost in 1313 Pulitzer Lane

Katherine grew up in a wealthy home in 1899, with a rich father who never wanted her to go out and explore the world on her own or focus on her own career. She still, however, always wanted to be a reporter, she always wanted to help people, so in her teens and early twenties, she began going to rally’s and writing stories on the underdogs and fighting for equality. One night, however, after a riveting article published against a politician who is also an alleged crime boss. After Katherine exposes him, a man breaks into her house at night, assaulting and murdering her in front of her parents who never manage to recover.

Katherine haunts her parents house for the rest of time. When Jack is still in captivity with Snyder, Snyder takes him to try and catch Katherine. Jack manages to warn her and Katherine is able to free herself from the house, promising Jack she would set him free one day too.

Crutchie Morris, the High Witch of Manhattan

Song: Control by Halsey

Charlie comes from a broken home, his dad always in and out and his mother an addict who his father enabled constantly. When Charlie is ten years old, he gets in a very bad car accident and his mother is trapped under a car. It’s the first time he uses his powers in his panic, unaware of what was truly happening. He saves his mother’s life but is unable to save his own leg. Kids at school start calling him Crutchie and Charlie takes on the nickname to try to gain confidence, even though he eventually manages to use a cane rather than a crutch. He practices magic in the woods as he grows up, eventually finding other witches in New York and teaching all of them how to use their magic with ancient spell books and wands that he managed to find while doing his research about old witches who lived in Manhattan before him.

When a fallen Angel gets trapped on earth and is being hunted by the feared monster hunter of New York, he manages to save him before escaping himself and allowing the demon to live with his black wings another day.

David Jacobs, the Mad Doctor

Song: Monster Mash by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and Tye Crypt-Kickers

David is a scholar. He grows up in a very normal family, middle class in the suburbs with two loving parents and a twin sister and a little brother who he loves more than life. One day, his little brother dies. He got sick and his little body couldn’t quite make it. So David takes up his life in science and dedicates his life to bringing his little brother back to him, doing horrible things like stealing the organs of recently deceased to try and reanimate his brother, eventually stealing a dying man’s beating heart to bring little Les back to life.

The two are joined at the hip. David’s twin sister cuts ties with him after all he’s done, but once David has his brother back, he doesn’t care.

Les Jacobs, the Mad Doctor’s Monster

Song: Cold Cold Cold by Cage the Elephant

Les is David’s little monster— brother. He is very young when he dies, only ten and he is taken by a sickness no one could quite treat fast enough. Eventually, he is brought back to life by his big brother, but he’s never quite the same, unable to speak as he used to or use decision making or common sense. All he knows is that he has his brother and he wants to keep them both safe.

He runs into a monster hunter one day, meeting a tamed wolf who looks sad and defeated. He feeds him before the wolf is taken away after biting its master. Les can’t comprehend that the wolf saved him from a second death.

Racetrack Higgins, the Fallen Angel

Song: Bad Guy by Billie Eilish

Race is an all holy angel before he begins to question the ways of his kind. He falls fast and unexpectedly, turning his wings black and his heart a bit bitter, but the boy ultimately loves creating chaos. He thrives in hell, however he does make a few enemies who trick him into making a trip to earth with no way back. Race gets trapped in a realm with humans who are frightened of him and Race becomes a target for those who see him as he is; unholy.

A monster hunter becomes particularly interested in him and his dark wings, managing to trap him for a short time, taking a chip off of his wings. But he is saved by a lone wolf who gets Race on his back and rushes him to safety, helping mend his wounds.

Spot Conlon, the Rebellious Vampire

Song: Raise Hell by Dorothy

Spot is a normal boy growing up in the Victorian era. He has sisters and a mother whom he takes care of and lives beyond belief, but he still manages to be a bad boy outside of his home life. He likes to sneak out at night and meet strangers in the woods for a good time. He gets bit when he’s nineteen.

He adapts to the times, moving around the world so he won’t ever be recognized. He never makes friends, not wanting to lose anyone else like he lost his sisters, but when he meets a fall angel with fangs just like his, he can’t help but stick around a bit, even if that fallen angel’s best friend, a wolf with an attitude, drives him absolutely crazy.

Albert DaSilva, the First Risen Zombie

Song: Spooky, Scary Skeletons by Andrew Gold

Albert grows up in a very dull neighborhood, where nothing exciting ever happens, however he does think back and curse himself for wishing something exciting would happen. You see, Albert’s town was the test sight for a new energy drink, chemicals unknown to the public, and Albert never could resist a beverage that would keep him awake for days on end. He soon regretted that decision when he was pronounced dead three days later. He woke up in the morgue with a strange craving that he could never fulfill and his brain didn’t quite work right. The chemicals led to a strange reaction, people dying and waking up, biting others who had similar but faster spreading reactions.

The entire city is quarantined and treated for their zombie-like symptoms, eventually waking up and believing everything to be normal. But there’s still that craving for human flesh that Albert can’t quite shake.

Medda Larkin, the Boogey(wo)man

Medda is a legend, a nightmare, who has been around for centuries. She protects the monsters that make her nightmares real, taking a liking to a group of misfits who are the target of one monster hunter that is a little too persistent for his own good.

William Snyder, the Monster Hunter

Song: Weight of the World by Shayfer James

Will is six years old when he witnesses his mother get murdered by a monster out of control. He dedicates his life to hunting down those responsible, trying to protect the public from these creatures, these demons that threaten their human way of life. He’ll make sure they suffer for things they may or may not have done if it’s the last thing he does.

Newsies has once again invaded my brain, so lo and behold I'm plotting out an AU... the gist so far is that Adric and Nyssa are siblings, in like the sense that her father took Adric in after his brother died (gonna go ahead and say their parents sent them out of country at a young age because I recently came across someone telling the story of their family history and their great grandfather was sent to the United States at 12 years old to avoid being conscripted by first the Ottoman Empire and then the British because of WWI. So in that vein, Adric and his brother were sent to NYC, with no other relatives with them or even living there.). Nyssa's dad does reasonably well, like not you know super wealthy, but they're definitely comfortable. I have to play around with why she and Adric wind up getting into selling newspapers, but since I can use Newsies as a general idea it'll probably be similar to Davey and Les.

Tegan actually gets similar as well, except it's just her and her aunt, and selling newspapers is a way for her to not only help with the house, but also have a measure of independence. Her aunt's death is gonna be a whole Thing, given that I'm giving her the leadership position of the Brooklyn Newsies (I say its Brooklyn because the whole damn Burrough is pretty no-nonsense and also I think it would be fun to have them be immigrants living there) and Turlogh will accidentally set her off because yeah, he's gonna be there too. He'll be a pain in the ass, but since he and Tegan are basically siblings in canon, it'll work out very well for my plans.

Five I haven't decided on yet, but I think he'll be from a family that's really well off, but he's just like mutually ignoring them (I can't remember what TV show this is from, but one character has a parent who puts money into their bank account and they both pretend they don't know where it's from. It'll be kinda like that.) and he sort of winds up adopting these morons like he does in canon and of course nonsense happens.

To continue the theme, and because I want to do some world building, Sarah Jane will be there as well. She'll be a reporter, but have been a newsie some years before the start of the story and thus have the respect of most of the cities newsies, not only for the reporting, but also because she was the leader of a different burrough's newsies. I don't have a timeline yet, but loose idea is that the 1899 strike depicted in Newsies is something she was involved in.

Nine will also be there, he'll have been a newsie but is working at the docks by the time the story rolls around. Will also have pull with newsies as well because of this, plus he's the most working class of the Doctor's. This man would look right at home at a dock or a ship yard. Anyways, he'll be hanging around Sarah a bit and basically be everyone's older brother, yes that includes Five.

I have no plans for Harry, Four, Rose, Mickey, or Jack as of yet, but I'm sure they'll wind up in there. For the most part the focus is gonna be Team Five, but that doesn't preclude other Doctors or companions showing up, depending on how this all develops. I only have a couple of scenes and some broad ideas.

If you’ve seen my last post you know that I’m riding home with an old middle school friend who I’m definitely not still close with and definitely doesn’t know about my gender for a 1.5-2.5 hour drive (dependent on traffic)

Also I’m going to put a quick synopsis of an idea thats 6 years in the making below the cut

It’s a Doctor Who AU that was literally some of the first world building my girlfriend (@somekindaspacecadet) and I ever did so I’ll explain some of the main characters below and don’t worry if you’re interested in learning about it and you haven’t watched the show a lot of it’s pretty different and I’m willing to explain (ie infodump) to anyone who has questions either about the AU itself or the characters specifically (please talk to me about these nerds i would die for every single one of them)

(side note) these are just some of the big players within the universe we’ve “taken” plenty of characters from the show and changed some aspects or just left them the way they were, and we have created dozens of characters that just don’t play as big of a role as these guys do

Theta: this is the main character of the show during his schooling years from about 8-100 (he’s an alien they don’t age the same as us!) he’s kinda goofy and not very academically driven, despite being in his school’s top 10 program, but he’s fiercely loyal to his friends and he’s moralistically driven. He’s also down for a good party with plenty of illegal substances

Kos: Theta’s best friend (also one of the shows reoccurring antagonists, but we dont have to talk about that now) more academically driven than Theta, also in the top 10 club (referred to as “the Deca”) , a little more on the anxious and depressed side (which is a big gen z/millennial mood) he has had 2 pet cats (the former named Carrot and the latter named Vincent), he tries to be an emo boy but he’s really just a big softy and he loves his friends and girlfriend so much its wild. He likes sweaters and can only cook hot coco

side note: Theta and Kos are sometimes romantically involved and they and their SO’s are a-OK with this situation and other than the 2 siblings of the group they work more as a polyamourous relationship than as individual ships!

Ali: Kos’s younger sister and Theta’s girlfriend. Pretty sassy and overall a good time, she’s a musician (yeah she was a self insert when i was 13 sue me) and she doesn’t take anyones crap 10/10 willing to fight at any given moment. Best friends with Katie (see below)

Katie: Kos’s girlfriend (or fiancee depending on the point in the timeline) and Ali’s best friend. She is one of the first people to basically change her status within schools to try and fulfill her dream of one day becoming the president of her people. She’s super ambitious but literally a perfect cinnamon roll too good too pure we love her so much we are all Katie stans here in this house

Note these characters are all 100% precanon the next set all more or less exist during the “canon timeline” and will be listed by relevance rather than appearance chronologically within the timeline

Ali: (So initially this Ali and the other Ali did not coexist in the same universe but things happened and all our headcanons merged so now they do and this Ali is named after the first Ali.) Ali is, more or less, the main character of the universe she is the child of the main character and another powerful character who depending on the timeline, is either a quiet, anxious child that has a lot of crap thrown at her when she’s little (none of it is like familial abuse she is very loved its all unfortuate situations given that the show is a sci-fi drama) or a wonderful teacher and mother as an adult

Lizzie: Ali’s younger sister (thought chronologically would appear first in some instances but time travel man) she has a different second parent than Ali but basically everyone gets along just fine because the main character is just Like That TM. Also there’s like long time gaps in between these relationships because of the long life span and time travel. Lizzie is our aroace queen and we are also all Lizzie stans. She’s very Scottish and takes no one’s shit. She is known for standing up for the kids at her school and beating up bullies, which gets her in some trouble but she keeps doing it anyway. She also plays soccer (football in canon as its based in the UK) her papa is more traditional (not in a bigoted way just likes some gender rolls, he’s trying his best hes from the past) and really isnt sure what to make of his very androgynous daughter but he loves her like so much you guys 

Alex: Ali’s husband also Kos’s son but like far into the future. So, with the whole you cant link posts thing right now I’ll just tell you guys when i was 13 I read this fic part of the series “Not the Last” by elisi on AO3 and we like, low key started incorporating this character into our stories so like oops. All thats basically the same are bits of his backstory and his name but I 100% recommend reading the fic because it’s really good! We just altered him to fit into our story so now hes drastically different from the original which is good. Alex is the world’s biggest nerd he loves all things comics and sci-fi, he has his action figures organized by order of appearance in the movies, and he works for space organizations despite being a literal alien (or is that because hes a literal alien who knows) he’s a big dork but we love him anyway

Leo: Ali and Alex’s son. He’s super smart and wants to be a doctor when he grows up. He’s also completely non-verbal and communicates either telepathically (alien tech) or with sign language. Despite the things that happen to make Kos a major antagonist, hes doing his best to reform and Leo is part of that process, he loves this kid (so do we), the two are very close and spend a lot of time together despite Alex’s initial protests

I lied, I'm still awake

there must be something in the water 'cause every day it's getting colder, one of my favorite pieces I've ever written for any fandom — 759 words of relationship and character study through the lens of an ice/ocean metaphor. I'm exceedingly proud of the style I managed to use for it, which is probably the most poetic and melodramatic I've ever been lol. (for some fun added context if you don't go to the AO3 page, the title is from Bruises by Lewis Capaldi, I wrote it while listening to We Fall Apart by We As Human on loop for about three hours, and I took major inspiration for some lines from Gravity by Sara Bareilles.)

Though The Truth May Vary, the introduction and opening piece of an ongoing, WIP AU that @fortes-fortuna-iogurtum and I are writing. it's our baby, our brainchild, my beloved.

MSR cancer arc ANGST, it's an AU of this one episode where Scully spends the entire time trying to pretend like she's fine when she's Not, just bc she struggles with being vulnerable, so I added some extra whump to it based on a gifset that got me thinking, and it turned into... honestly one of my longer oneshots, bc I don't usually pass 2k lol.

still know your heart and still know both your eyes, my first X-Files fanfic!! I'm proud of it both bc I think I did well with characterizations and relationship stuff, but also bc it's a little bit of a peek into my own world; it's set entirely in the Anchorage Alaska airport, which I've spent a good amount of time in lol and in VERY fond of it there. it's a very liminal fic.

The Kids Aren't Alright, which was... I believe the last Newsies fic I wrote before I ended up with some major writer's block for quite a while. it makes more sense if you've read at least the first fic in the series tbh, but the story is basically just the canon events of the stage musical (the filmed Broadway one with Jeremy Jordan, not the movie with Christian Bale) but like, through the POV of Race, and if the background character of Smalls was more fleshed out. still think about that dynamic i came up with all the time hdjssnsnsk

In Books Written By Rabbits, my second fic exploring an extremely underrated platonic relationship in one of the Doctor Who spinoff audio series. Who are the characters on this blog? I'm new but they seem really interesting! :0

Hi welcome! Hope you’re enjoying the blog so far and aren’t too overwhelmed by my nonsense heh :) For the most part, 90% of the characters here are from the 1992 Disney musical movie Newsies! Its a really cool and super underrated live action musical based on the historical newsboy strike of 1899, and the soundtrack absolutely SLAPS. They also made a broadway adaptation in 2017. For whatever reason brain decided to hyperfixate back in 2020 so now I have a huge pile of way too fleshed out AUs that I draw for all the time. Sometimes I’ll even write too when the mood strikes me.

Aside from Newsies I draw some art for quite a few of my own original characters, and anything else that catches my fancy. We got a bit of Lotr and Doctor Who among other things, and I’m about to spam Little Shop of Horrors art here in a bit hah. But majority content is and will continue to be Newsies :)

A Newsies boarding school AU I came up with

- The school is called The World Boarding School of Upstate New York and the headteacher is Pulitzer

- The Newsies (that will be listed) as well as Sarah and Katherine are all in the New York dorms

- All the dorms are named after US cities and the New York dorm was the original dorm

- Each dorm has 10 rooms that fits 4 but barely ever all rooms are filled

- Each dorm has a big common room

- Now for the stuff about the newsies my beloved

- ROOMS!!!!

Room 1 - Jack, Crutchie, Davey and Boots

Room 2 - Race, Albert, Jojo and Tommy Boy

Room 3 - Romeo, Elmer, Ike and Finch

Room 4 - Kid Blink, Mush, and Specs

Room 5 - Henry, Mike and Buttons

Room 6 - Spot, York and Myron

Room 7 - Katherine, Sarah, Hotshot and Graves

- There used to be a lot of fights over what was put on the tv so they had to create a roster with a different person having the remote each day

- But whenever that person isn't in the common room Doctor Who is on

- It's the only show that the whole dorm agreed was good

- They have a water fountain in the corner that is only ever filled with pepsi

- the fountain is labled bepis because of that one a good chunk of them got drunk after Katherine snook in beer

- Davey labled the fountain

- None of the newsies have a sleep schedule

- There is always someone in the common room no matter the time

- They have weekly mariokart tournaments

- The current champion is Crutchie

- As well as the bepis fountain™️ they have a the depresso fixer

- Its and old expresso machine that barely works but it everyones really attached to it and refuse to let it be frown away

- In the showers theres a poster hung of the old lady with asthma stock photo

- Each year they have a residential trip and the latest one was to an outdoor activty centre (Think like Conway centre or a summer camp) where they stayed for a week

- That will prolly be another post

- The entire dorm once died their hair and they all got isolation until it washed out

- There was one time in Race's RE where homophobia got discussed

- He got a week in isolation for decking a homophobe

- The equivalent of the strike in this au was this time they all went mental over the schools meal deal price being raised

- It was $3 but Pulitzer raised it to $5

- No one did any work for like a week until it was lowered

- It got lowered back down

- This is like some of the bullet points I have more but i dont know when i will get the energy to post them

Here’s a concept:

Javid office/co-workers au. Davey is a Very Tired HR associate and Jack is the artist in the Graphic Design and Marketing department that keeps calling him through the inter-office phone line because he’s bored.

Jack gets in trouble for being on his personal cellphone during office hours—after so many of the same infraction, he gets a call from HR to emphasize the importance of following company policy. The HR person that makes the call is Davey.

Somehow, in this short conversation, Jack becomes a little obsessed with the guy from HR who’s voice makes Jack’s brain feel like it’s actually tuned in to the right frequency. So he calls Davey again, and they somehow end up chatting for, like, an hour right in the middle of the work day.

And then this happens several days in a row. Davey isn’t sure what to make of Mr. Kelly, who apparently is not at all upset about the verbal warning Davey had to give him and likes to just???? Call??? And talk??? And he’s so funny and charming and a little stupid in such an earnest and endearing way that talking to him quickly becomes one of the best parts of Davey’s day, but Davey just can’t figure out why Jack keeps wanting to him, of all people

It eventually comes out that the reason Jack keeps making personal calls on the clock is because he does his best artwork when he’s talking to someone while working. (Not sure how much this will be made explicit in-fic, but Jack’s got ADHD and he needs just enough of the right kind of background stimulus to focus on other tasks.) Unfortunately, the other artists in his department are the listen to music/podcasts/audiobooks or the ‘total silence to Focus’ types and don’t like to be bothered when they’re in The Zone, so whenever Jack gets frustrated and hits a block—which has been more and more often lately—he’s been calling up his friends/brother for as much conversation/distraction as they can stand.

“Kloppman wouldn’t have even filed the complaint if Weasel hadn’t’a insisted on it,” Jack says. “The fucking brown noser.”

“Well, have you considered informing Kloppman about your reasons?” Davey asks. “I mean, explicitly phrasing it as a accommodation that you need in order to do your best work? There’s a form you can fill out and file with us that would keep you from getting any more citations, no matter how often you’re on the phone. Well, as long as you can get a work request from your doctor.”

“Can I really do that?” Jack asks.

“Sure you can,” Davey says. “Here, I’m sending you a copy of the relevant section of the employee handbook and the paperwork you need. Just drop it off at HR whenever.”

“You’re an absolute godsend, aren’t you Jacobs?” Jack says. “Fuck, that would make things so much easier.”

“Just hand in those forms and you’ll have the company’s full permission to call your brother as much as you want,” Davey assures him.

“Spot’s gonna fucking hate me,” Jack says with what sounds like a delighted laugh. The sound of it sends a shiver down Davey’s spine, even as his heart pangs at the thought of not getting to hear it anymore.

“Happy to help,” Davey says. He takes a breath, then forces his usual levity into his voice. “Will that be all, Mr. Kelly?”

“That’ll be all, Mr. Jacobs,” Jack says. “And hey, David? Thanks.”

And Davey thinks that’ll be that. He regrets that he won’t get to spend an hour talking with Jack every day, then feels stupid for getting so hung up on someone he’s never even met—all he knows of Jack is his voice and that they work for the same company. But the next Monday, Jack calls right when he usually does.

“Spot told me he’d murder me dead if I called for anything less than a fully-fledged emergency,” Jack says cheerfully. “So it looks like you’re stuck with me.”

“You could call one of those friends I’ve heard so much about,” Davey volleys back, feeling lighter than he has all morning. “Unless this is your way of trying to tell me that you don’t have any friends.”

It’s nothing different than their usual banter, but when Jack speaks again, his voice sounds a little weird.

“If you don’t want me callin’ so much, I can dial it back,” Jack says. “I mean, even my own brother gets tired of the sound of my voice sometimes, so I can’t imagine how you feel after spending so much time humorin’ me these last few weeks—“

“No!” Davey blurts out. “No, that’s not what I— I don’t mind talking with you. I like talking to you,” he corrects.

“Yeah?” Jack asks, strangely hopeful.

“Yeah,” Davey answers with a smile Jack can’t see. “And besides, I wouldn’t want to be the reason your brother ‘murders you dead’,” he jokes.

A bark of laughter. “Yeah, how would you live with yourself,” Jack teases.

Lots of office shenanigans. I love the idea of Katherine being one of the workers in Davey’s office and just constantly teasing him about the mysterious artist upstairs that’s always calling him. Similarly, I’d have Charlie as one of the workers in Jack’s office, and every now and then Davey can hear his voice in the background of Jack’s side of the line—he can’t always make out the words, but it always makes Jack sputter and yell at him to go away.

And maybe cameos from the other newsies if I can think of places to sneak them in? Not sure yet, I’ll have to think about it some more.

I’d love for them to not actually meet until the absolute end of the fic, and by complete accident. Like, maybe there’s like an internet safety/email and interpersonal etiquette seminar that the HR department requires everyone to attend, and when Davey goes up to the podium and introduces himself as Mr. Jacobs from HR, he happens to notice a very handsome man sitting in the back straighten up in his seat, suddenly avidly attentive.

But most importantly, a Javid office romance/mutual pining/strangers to lovers where the whole fic takes place almost entirely over the phone. And also they call each other Mr. Kelly/Mr. Jacobs bc ever since I saw that text post I can’t stop thinking about it.
